Scan the code for your own copy of Everything Quadra
We l c o m e t o E v e r y t h i n g Q u a d r a ! And welcome to the Discovery Islands, our little piece of paradise where residents and visitors alike appreciate a quiet lifestyle and the natural beauty of this special place.
Why get involved? The DICC is a great way to contribute to our community. Meetings are held every month, giving members / business owners a chance to network over lunch and talk about ways to make the Island’s business environment more vibrant. Ultimately, it comes down to people: DICC members care deeply about the well-being of our community – and yes, it’s true: we actually have a lot of fun at our meetings!
Everything Quadra, the Visitors’ Guide is brought to you by the Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber is an integral part of our island, with a longstanding involvement in local events and festivals. Since 1998 the DICC has encouraged and sponsored broadbased community activities, enhancing our social fabric and bringing economic benefit to island businesses. The Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce always welcomes new community members. To apply for membership to the DICC please download, complete and submit an application form from the website: www.discoveryislands.ca/chamber/join.html
Need one more good reason? We have about one hundred... we call them members! People like you who care about our community, and want to make a positive difference... people working together to establish a stronger, more vital social and business landscape. The Discovery Islands Chamber of Commerce meets monthly (except for July and August). All members are welcome and are encouraged to attend. For more detailed information about the Chamber, please feel free to visit our website and get in touch.
Annual Dues Individuals: $30 • Societies: $30 Small Businesses with less than 5 employees: $50 Businesses with 5 or more employees: $100 What does the DICC offer? A forum to discuss issues of common concern to business owners on the islands. A place to share ideas with others. An opportunity to guide and create island policies that benefit all of Quadra.
E
And finally, our thanks to the following islanders for their contribution to Everything Quadra: Editors... Sarah Bradshaw, Robyn Budd Designer... Robyn Budd Printer... Lara Fraser, Inspirations on Quadra Island Special thanks to all of our advertisers, because without all of you we wouldn’t be... Everything Quadra!

Island Ethics
Island Ethics: Our Quadra Island Code
T
ourism is the largest industry in the world, and it comes with a built-in capacity to impact people and nature in significant ways. Here on Quadra Island we promote responsible tourism – tourism that benefits both visitors and the local community, and fully respects the natural environment of our beautiful and precious island. Everything Quadra presents our Island Ethics to our visitors, so you can join us in caring for the land and forests, streams and lakes, marine parks and ocean waters at the heart of our community – and which provide the outdoor recreation that brings you to our doorstep. Simply put, this Island is our home, and during your visit we invite you to help us keep it beautiful, natural, and safe for all.
Here’s how you can help us care for our island environment Fire Safety The past few summers have been hotter and drier as a result of a changing climate, with an increasingly high fire hazard to our forests and homes. Fire bans are now typical on Quadra for most of the summer and early fall. Even campfires in fire pits have been banned during extreme dry weather. It’s essential that all residents and visitors are aware of the level of fire hazard at all times, and act with care and responsibility. Smokers – be vigilant if you smoke outdoors. Dispose of your cigarette butts in a safe manner, preferably in receptacles provided in public venues. If you smoke on our trails or in our parks, use a small tin or glass jar with a secure lid for your butts. NEVER leave cigarette butts on the ground, especially in our forests and parks.
Water Conservation In hot, dry summers the amount of water available may be compromised at some venues. It’s vital to avoid excess usage. As most properties have septic systems, used facial tissues and sanitary products go in the garbage, not in toilets. Responsible Resource Use It’s the small things that matter. At your chosen Island accommodation, please turn off lights and taps and turn down thermostats when you leave for the day. In parking lots, ferry line ups and all public places on Quadra Island, turn off your vehicle when you’re not driving. Quadra is part of the Idle Free initiative to protect air quality by reducing unnecessary vehicle engine idling. So don’t be surprised if a resident asks you to turn off your engine if your car is standing still – we care about the air we breathe! Recycling All garbage on our island is trucked to an off-island landfill, so we strive to minimize the amount of waste we produce. We’re fortunate to have single stream recycling in Quathiaski Cove. Your accommodation will likely have its own recycling program, and many offer food waste composting as well.
Wildfire Danger Ratings Check at your accommodation to see if summer campfires are permitted. Wildfire Danger Ratings for Quadra Island are posted online at www.quadrafire.org and at www.thegumboot.ca If you see signs of a fire call 1.800.663.5555 or 911 or *5555 on your cell phone.

Island Ethics Plastic Grocery Bags There are no plastic bags available at Quadra Island grocery stores and at many other merchant venues. As part of an island-wide commitment to reduce waste and use of plastic, we’ve replaced plastic bags with paper and reusable carrier bags. At many of our stores you can purchase reusable bags, and of course we encourage you to bring your own. Litter: Just Don’t! Do your part to keep our roads, parks, trails and oceans clean! Dispose of litter in appropriate garbage cans. Remember that all garbage, and most notably plastics, pose a deadly threat to wildlife. Dispose of your trash responsibly. Outdoor Etiquette Enjoying nature is one of the joys of being on Quadra. Here are a few things to remember: • On the water, keep a distance of at least 100 metres from seals, dolphins, birds and other mammals in order to avoid disturbing them. Don’t be tempted to touch wildlife or disturb their habitats, whether on water or on land. • Boaters and jet-skiers: Use our waters with care – you share them with kayakers and paddle boarders. A 10hp limit applies to boats in the Main Lakes Chain Provincial Park. • On our trails and in our parks, the simple rule of pack it in, pack it out applies. Unless trails are in a park like Rebecca Spit, you won’t find garbage cans or washrooms. So come prepared to pack out all your lunch leftovers, garbage, and any personal waste you generate. Off Season Visits You may want to consider visiting Quadra during our shoulder seasons. Not only will you avoid the crowds, but the so-called quiet seasons have a different beauty with much to offer – including winter storm watching!
When you visit Quadra, you’re part of an amazing community So… Remember the Neighbours! One of the draws to Quadra Island is our peaceful lifestyle. We want to keep it that way for residents and visitors alike, so do your part! Remember that sound travels clearly over water and disturbs people and wildlife far and wide. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping the volume down! Road Safety Respect our speed limit (60 kmh / 40 mph) and watch for the many children, cyclists, pets and wildlife that share our roads. Dusk is often the time that deer move from place to place as they forage, but expect them on our roadways at any time. If you need to drive slowly in search of that elusive island address, kindly pull over so that others behind you can maintain a safe and comfortable driving speed. Ferry Travel To minimize traffic congestion and your wait time, consider leaving your vehicle on Quadra and walking on and off the ferry when you visit Campbell River. If it’s necessary to take your vehicle off Quadra during your stay, aim for off-peak departure times before 9am or after 4pm. Support Local Businesses Whenever possible, we hope that you’ll use the services, facilities and tours developed and operated by Island residents. This provides financial benefits to local families and contributes to the vibrancy and viability of our community.
Thanks for joining us in our efforts to keep Quadra Island a strong, vital community that supports ecological principles!

Proud members to the fabric of Quadra Island and contributers to their community through the work they are passionate about. Quadra Island Woodlots Preserving Our Forests for the Future.... The ďŹ rst woodlot was established on Quadra Island in 1987. Since that time the program has expanded to 11 thriving woodlot licences, including 2 held by the Wei Wai Kai First Nation. Located within or adjacent to urban interface areas with sensitive resource management issues, they are managed sustainably and responsibly by individuals and families with ties to the local community. Our licensees strive to balance sustainable forest management with environmental, social and economic values.
Building Prosperous Communities
Woodlot licences are a form of small business and contribute to the BC economy and rural communities. Approximately 1,000 families rely on them for all or part of their livelihood. Licensees hire locally, acquire goods and services from local suppliers and invest back into the communities in which they live making a contribution of $50M+/year to local economies.
Through local associations and the Federation of BC Woodlot Associations, the woodlot program is also a proud supporter of youth by awarding scholarships each year to two students pursuing a post secondary education, with preference given to a forestry-related program.

A Tradition of Forestry Excellence
Woodlot licensees are governed by, and often exceed, strict guidelines that promote sustainable management of the forests and the ecosystem services they supply - timber, biodiversity, recreation, cultural heritage, visual quality, fish and wildlife, forage, soils and water.
24.3 km of recreation trails on Quadra Woodlot Licences
They are responsible for reforesting all of the areas they harvest, maintaining roads and fire prevention. Products and services are often influenced by local values. Some licensees operate their own small sawmills which provide lumber to value-added producers and local manufacturers. Some manage for non-timber forest products such as maple and birch syrups, mushrooms and specialty plant and wood products as well.
Striving to be BC’s best managed forests A woodlot licence is an agreement between an individual/organization and the BC government to manage a small area-based Crown tenure - granting exclusive rights to harvest and manage timber to the licence holder.
Rantging in size from 400 and 800 ha, BC Woodlots Licences collectively reptresent ~1,408,783 cubic meters (2016) of the province’s Annual Allowable Cut (AAC) and manage over 600,000 hectares (ha) of provixncial forestland adjacent to rural communities. Licensees represent a diverse group and tend towards a personal, small-scale approach to resource management.
