Introduction

Editor’s note

W

Welcome to the May issue of Gordano Living. This month we have two Bank Holidays to look forward to and there’s lots going on in the local area to keep you occupied whatever your interests. May Day Bank Holiday sees the return of local favourite the North Somerset Show and a new event for this year, The White Hart in Weston-inGordano’s food, wine and music festival. If fitness is your thing why not have a go at a triathlon at Portishead’s annual Tri-a-tri event or enter the Great Bristol 10K, the area’s latest competitive run? Read on for information on some of the exciting community activities coming up this month, including a new event for this year, Portishead Sing for Water. We hope that lots of you are able to join in with this uplifting musical fundraiser and raise some serious money for an amazing cause. The month of May also sees Dementia Awareness Week. To honour this we are looking at some of the groups and activities available in our community which offer much-needed support and advice to those dealing with this widespread condition. There are also some changes here at Gordano Living magazine as we wave goodbye to our regular columnist Lori Rowsell after five years of Allotment Virgins. We would like to thank Lori for all of her hard work and for entertaining our readers with her allotment tales over the years - we are sure that she will be sadly missed and wish her all the very best. I hope that you enjoy this issue. Gordano Living is your magazine so please get in touch with your news or stories.

Swimathon makes a splash T

his year’s Rotary Swimathon was held on March 19 at the Parish Wharf Pool in Portishead. Now in its 20th year, the Swimathon is a wellestablished occasion in the local calendar. It is always well attended and raises a great deal for local charities. This year’s event was a great success with record numbers of teams taking part and was thoroughly enjoyed by swimmers and spectators alike. All participants received a certificate recording their own personal time and a goodie bag, which Sainsbury’s kindly donated towards. Around 600 swimmers took part in a marathon run of races which continued throughout the day, with each Rotarian Miles Williams team of six

completing a 35 minute timed relay. Teams were made up of a wide range of age groups representing organisations from across Portishead and beyond, including local pre-schools and youth groups. Swimmers each sought sponsorship in advance and a percentage of the money raised will go straight back to their organisation. The great majority of the money raised this year will go to Children’s Hospice South West, which is Portishead Rotary Group’s chosen charity for 2016. The remainder will be split between other local Rotary supported charities. It is a fantastic fundraiser – last year £13,200 was raised. Regular Swimathon supporter and TV Presenter Jemma Cooper stepped up to start a race, with Claire Ewing from Children’s Hospice South West and a few of our very own Gordano Living peeps taking the baton later in the afternoon. The Rotary Club is very grateful for the fantastic support received each year and would like to thank everyone who took part and helped out. Rotarian Mollie Young has been tirelessly organising this year’s event since before Christmas, so congratulations go to her and the rest of the Rotary team for another great Swimathon!

Portishead Kitchens sponsor sizzling floral display

P

ortishead in Bloom is delighted that Portishead Kitchens has generously offered to sponsor a new flower bed on Wyndham Way. Occupying a prime position in the town, the plot will be planted with a range of perennials and shrubs with a palette of ‘hot’ colours; red, orange and yellow. It will provide a bright splash of colour throughout the summer and well into autumn. Later in the year, red and orange tulips will be added to bring a much needed flash of colour come the springtime. Portishead in Bloom would like to thank Portishead Kitchens for their support and North Somerset Council and contractors Glendale for digging the bed.

Community News Newfound Friends rescue dog receives animal OBE

A

Newfoundland with a water rescue career spanning 10-years has been awarded the PDSA Order of Merit for outstanding devotion to duty – also known as the animals’ OBE. Whizz, who sadly passed away in March aged 12, spent most of his life dedicated to patrolling the Bristol Channel and the River Severn with the Royal Navy Rescue, the Severn Area Rescue Association and the Marine Volunteer Service. He was the first to be posthumously presented with the award. Owner David Pugh of Clapton-in-Gordano trained Whizz as a rescuer when he was just one year old and he went on to rescue nine people and a dog. David picked up the accolade on behalf of his beloved pet at a ceremony on the Isle of Dogs in London, accompanied by Whizz’s cousin Tizz. David said: “I am bursting with pride for Whizz. He was a dog in a million and I am truly heartbroken that he isn’t here to receive his medal. “Whizz loved working and had an extraordinary talent. Not only was he strong and gentle - he was also so emotionally intuitive. This made him the perfect rescue and therapy dog and a beloved companion to the hundreds of

s part of an ongoing campaign, Portishead Lions have commissioned their latest defibrillator on the fence of Portishead Primary School on Gateway Terrace. Project leader Andrew Hill expressed his thanks to Woodson Electrical who carried out the installation and Greendoor Electrical Limited who recently installed a machine at Crockerne School in Pill. There are also Lions-commissioned defibrillators outside Boots on the High Street and in the old telephone box at Weston-in-Gordano. Two more life-saving units have been purchased by the club and work is ongoing to prepare sites at Highdown and St. Joseph’s Schools. sick children and adults he met along the way.” As well as his water rescues, Whizz raised thousands of pounds by taking part in the Newfoundland Water Rescue Days run by the charity Newfound Friends, which David set up in 1989 to raise the profile of the breed and use their skills to raise money for a number of human and animal charities. Whizz also transformed the lives of sick children and adults through his visits to hospitals, nursing homes and hospices, as well as visiting servicemen injured in the line of duty. The PDSA Order of Merit recognises animals that display outstanding devotion to their owner or wider society, above and beyond normal companionship. It represents an exceptional example of the special relationship between animals and humans.

Community News Portishead vet appears on Crufts to raise awareness of canine cancer

A

Portishead vet appeared on Crufts with a dog and its owner to raise awareness of canine cancer and a fundraising group that has raised more than £50,000 for research into the disease. Steve Tasker from Watkins and Tasker was interviewed alongside fundraiser Jayne May and Jayne’s dog Zoe as part of Channel 4’s coverage of the event. Jayne May set up Zoe’s Journey UK (funding research into canine cancer) to raise money for the Animal Health Trust (AHT), one of a handful of organisations in the world with a dedicated canine cancer research programme, Steve diagnosed Zoe’s cancer and all three were invited to attend the event at the Birmingham NEC after Crufts heard from the AHT about the campaign and how much has been raised. Following the visit and screening by Channel 4, the Zoe’s Journey UK Facebook pages lit up

and more than £50,000 has been raised to date, and they hope to reach £75,000 Steve Tasker, vet and local business owner, said: “It was a great opportunity to be interviewed to reach a national audience about both Jayne’s achievements with her fundraising group, Zoe’s Journey UK, and canine cancer. “My aim was to reinforce the message about how the speed of diagnosis can increase survival rates, bust the myths surrounding chemotherapy treatment for dogs and generally raise awareness of canine cancer research.” AHT has recognised Zoe’s Journey UK as being one of their largest independent fundraisers and, estimating that one in four dogs will get cancer in their lifetime, AHT’s research is crucial. Praise for cross-channel cooperation from RNLI crews

ifeboats from either side of the Bristol Channel were involved in the rescue of a yacht which ran aground at the end of March. Penarth RNLI’s two lifeboats were launched on March 13 following reports of the vessel which was reportedly taking on water. The lifeboats quickly located the 32ft vessel two miles east of Cardiff, and after checking the crew were well and the yacht was undamaged, helped it refloat. Penarth RNLI’s D-Class lifeboat then returned to station, whilst the refloated vessel was escorted across the Bristol Channel by the station’s Atlantic class lifeboat towards its original destination of Portishead in Somerset. It was subsequently placed under the care of Portishead RNLI lifeboat approximately a mile west of Clevedon. Penarth’s lifeboat then returned to station. Jason Dunlop, Lifeboat Operations Manager at Penarth RNLI, said: “This was a great example of our lifeboats working together efficiently and effectively across both sides of the Bristol Channel.” Crews returned after three hours on service to prepare the lifeboats and equipment for the next emergency call. A spokesperson from Portishead RNLI said: “We were happy to

take over the escort and it was brilliant to work with our neighbouring RNLI station. ‘While we were escorting the vessel, another shout came in to another yacht which was losing power in the dark and had no navigational lights. “As they were sailing to the marina, the volunteers left a crew member with the vessel under escort from Penarth and then went to assist the second vessel. Both arrived at Portishead Marina at the same time. We assisted a total of eight people in one evening.”

on the Mortgage Lender’s panel and are able to act on the Lender’s behalf, otherwise this can cause delays.

Be proactive

If a family member is helping you out with a deposit you need to notify your Mortgage Lender and Solicitor of whether it is a gift or a loan. If a loan, your Lawyer should draw up a formal agreement between you and the donor to save any confusion in the future.

Make an appointment with your Mortgage Lender and appoint a Property Lawyer before you start looking for a property. It is important to make an educated decision when appointing a Lawyer and not to be influenced by third parties such as agents or simply to look for the cheapest option. You should enquire as to whether any potential lawyer acts for both the property’s seller and buyer - if they do, a conflict could arise when attempting to agree a completion date or when confidential financial information is being disclosed. Funding Get your Mortgage Lender to confirm how much they are willing to loan to you as this will prove you can afford the property and assist when you make an offer on a property. Always check with your Lawyer that they are

Budget accordingly Don’t forget when budgeting for your new home that there will be additional costs on top of your deposit that you will need to consider. For example, stamp duty, surveying, legal, mortgage, and moving costs. At QualitySolicitors Burroughs Day we give a fixed fee for legal work so that you know the legal costs involved to help you stay within budget right from the outset. Source a Lawyer Get moving as quickly as you can by appointing the right lawyer. A proactive lawyer will carry out all preparatory work and

background checks so once you have found your dream home you are good to go! This can save up to a week or two out of the whole process. Protect your assets If you are purchasing your property with a friend, family member or a partner you may be putting in an unequal amount of deposit funds. We can help you to put a Trust Deed in place to protect your funds in the event that you sell the property in the future or break up with your partner or fall out with your family member. Communicate Always let your Lawyer know the best means of contacting you as well as any holidays or dates you are not available. We regularly contact clients by phone, text and email as well as by post to speed up the process. If you are planning a move, contact one of our fully qualified and experienced property lawyers right away for a quote. We’ll be pleased to discuss any questions you may have about buying or selling your property.

Community News e Gordano School pupils becom journalists for the day

A

group of Year 7 students from Gordano School recently took part in BBC News School Report, 2016 - a countrywide initiative which gives 11-16 year-olds the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience. The small team of roving reporters had the opportunity to interview representatives of Bristol-based firm Hargreaves Lansdown. The firm, who signed up as Gordano Partners in January, kindly agreed to speak with students about their business in order to provide a little more insight into the world of financial services. A sub-team worked under pressure to capture some shots of the company’s stunning Bristol office in Anchor Road, and also to investigate why Hargreaves Lansdown have signed up to Gordano School’s new Gordano Partners programme. The Year 7 pupils have been working hard since September to learn about reporting, video editing and filming ahead of the School Report News Day which was held on March 10. English teacher Chris Turner managed this year’s team of 30 pupils. He comments: “We’ve enjoyed taking part in the BBC School Report

for the last few years and it certainly provides a challenge for our pupils. The report is filmed, edited and submitted to the BBC over one day, and so the team were forced to learn how to work to tight deadlines, to make quick decisions and develop new skills in media.” As part of the project, the budding Year 7 reporters also produced some fantastic features from Gordano School, including a piece on the recent production of Romeo and Juliet and a story on Electric Cars.

If you would like to view the final BBC School Report, it can be found on the Gordano School website: www.gordanoschool.org.uk/bbc-schoolreport-2016.

Lions plan ahead for bulb planting

M

embers of Portishead Lions have been out and about recently viewing the daffodils on Wyndham

Way. The club members were involved in the original planting along the roadside and thought it was time for a check-up on how they were looking. As one of the main entry roads into the town, Wyndham Way provides visitors to Portishead with that all important first impression and during the springtime the daffodils make a magnificent display. The recent inspection did reveal a few gaps in the display and Lions members are already planning their planting later in the year to fill in the holes. So, if you keep an eye out in September you may see Lions prowling the grass verges on Wyndham Way. There’s nothing to fear though - they will simply be doing their bit to help make Portishead a nice place to live. Anyone interested in joining Portishead Lions in their efforts to support the local community can find out more by calling 01275 281415 or visiting the club’s website: www.portisheadlionsclub.org.uk.

Outdoor gym equipment

P

ortishead Town Council has recently given the go ahead to a company called Vita Play who have been tasked with providing outdoor gym equipment on the pavement along Esplanade Road. The project to provide the equipment is the culmination of lots of research carried out over the last 12 months. The Council has chosen Vita Play to supply the equipment based on the company’s long guarantees, the fact that it is made in Great Britain, and its marine grade materials. As we go to press the equipment is being manufactured and will be installed shortly. We hope people will have a go with the kit and get fit for free. If the equipment is a success we will look at installing more.

ortishead Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) owns and maintains nine noticeboards around the town for community use. The number of volunteers who maintain the boards has dwindled over time. Key considerations before investing by

Nathan Stacey from

I

t’s tempting to have savings in cash. It is easy to arrange, it’s easy to get our money out, and thanks to the government’s Financial Services Compensation Scheme our money (up to £75,000) is safe, even if the company we are saving with isn’t. The problem is that it is probably earning very little interest - while inflation means its actual value (or spending power) is constantly whittled away. If you want to grow your money, savings are not really enough. You may find its time to start thinking about investment. What exactly is an investment? With savings, your money remains just money. With investments you buy something - or a share in something - with the intention of getting a profitable return. Depending on where you put your money, those returns could be paid in a number of different ways: • Interest (from fixed interest securities) • Dividends (from shares) • Rent (from properties) • The difference between the price you pay and the price you sell for of any asset you invest in. Investing could help you reach your long term financial goals. But it’s important to understand that when you invest, you are putting your money at risk. The greater the potential for growth, the greater that risk is. If you are prepared to accept the risk, you could be ready to become an investor. But its important to consider our seven key steps first

1. Set your financial goals You may not have a particular reason for investing, but you should decide what you want your money to do. Are you just looking to grow your money, or you want a regular income? Is there a set amount that you want your money to grow by or a minimum income that you need?

2. Set your time frame Once you know what your goals are, work out how long you have to achieve them. Want to retire at 55? Want to buy a second home in the next five years? This will give you an idea of the kind of rates of return that you’ll need from your investments and whether your goals are realistic. If you have short-term goals (less than five years) you should stick to cash savings because, if your investments fall in value, you might not have time to recover your losses before you need the money. Medium (five to 10 years) and long-term goals (10 years or more) are appropriate for investment, but some investments become less appropriate the older you get. You have less time for your money to recover if it falls in value.

3. Understand your attitude to risk Understanding the risks of investing is fundamental. You might have plenty of time, and plenty of cash to fall back on, but if you can’t sleep at night when the markets became volatile, high risk investment probably isn’t for you.

4. How much can you invest? Be realistic about how much you can afford to invest. Assess all of your liabilities, like debts, insurance premiums, pension contributions, savings and living costs, to see how much spare cash you have to invest. Focus on reducing debt to levels that are easy to manage or, ideally, pay off all debt before investing. Some money should be kept in cash as ‘rainy day’ money for emergencies. It could be a good idea

16

to have enough cash for six months, if your income was to suddenly cease. Investing works best when you can take a long term view, so it might be best to stay in cash if you think you might need the money in the next five years.

5. How should you invest? The various assets owned by an investor are called a portfolio. When you start investing, it’s usually a good idea to spread your risk by spreading your portfolio across a number of different products and asset classes. That way, if one investment doesn’t work out as you hope, you’ve still got your others to fall back on. This is called ‘diversifying’. Some investment funds provide diversification for you by spreading investments across a range of assets, and letting you buy what is in effect a share of them all. You can buy many types of investment directly. But for some investments, like shares, it may be easier to use a broker to buy them for you. Remember, funds and brokers will make charges which will eat into the returns your investments earn for you

6.Think about tax Investments can attract tax, which reduce your effective returns - so it’s important to make full use of your various 2016/17 tax allowances. • Your personal capital gains allowance £11,100 • Your ISA allowance - You can invest up to £15,240 in an ISA each year • Your dividend allowance - you can now earn up to £5,000 in dividends each year • Your personal savings allowance – you can earn up to £1,000 each in savings interest • Your annual pension contribution allowance is currently £40,000 a year, up to the lifetime allowance of £1 million.

7. Get financial advice Many investors make their own decisions, without advice. But DIY requires time, knowledge and confidence. You’ll probably want a portfolio that is a mixture of bonds, equities and cash tailored to your investment needs, and which maximises tax efficiency, all of which demands expertise. If you get professional financial advice, you’ll be able to talk through all the points raised above and ensure that your investments are tailored exactly to your needs. T

he Memory Café is a service provided by the Portishead Rotary Club. The idea is to offer a setting where sufferers of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and their carers can enjoy the company of others for a couple of hours. Dementia can be an isolating experience for the sufferer and the carer. An opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, take part in quizzes, play games, listen to visiting speakers and have a singalong with others can make all the difference. Being able to meet in an unhurried, non-threatening environment is vital and can bring a sense of wellbeing to the dementia sufferer long after the session has passed. There are people within the group at various stages of dementia; indeed one of the hallmarks of the disease is how it affects people in such completely different ways; but everyone seems to get something from the sessions. Rotarian Brian Knox-Little, who helps to run the group, says: “For some, they don’t remember coming from one session to the next, but they know that there is something that they do on a Tuesday and that it makes them feel better afterwards - and they

ask their carer when they can come again.” The quizzes and games enable the group to interact and can be a good opportunity for some to focus and remember. For others who may be unable to fully participate in the games, the music and sing-along section can be enjoyed. Activities are designed to avoid putting the participants under stress and each session follows the same pattern; so to those that come regularly it has a feeling of familiarity which can be so important. The Memory Café is a lifeline for sufferers and carers alike. It is such a positive place to be and there is laughter and banter among the group. For someone caring for a person on a one-to-one basis it is a much needed break and a pleasure to see their loved one interacting with others and enjoying themselves. From time to time activities are also provided by outside organisations. A Bristol company called Alive! have been along on several occasions to run workshops with the group. They specialise in activities which are designed to spark the imagination and promote discussion and memory among dementia sufferers. The Memory Café is held on the first and third Tuesday of every month at Jubilee Hall, Slade Road, Portishead from 2.15 – 3.45pm. New members are always welcome and will be made to feel at home as soon as they enter. There is no charge and refreshments are free. All costs are covered by the Portishead Rotary Club.

Viper Subsea technology being lowered into Portishead Quays marina

A

shallow water trial of a new technology system designed to address a recurring problem in the subsea oil and gas industry has started at Portishead Quays marina. The system, known as V-IR, has been developed by local subsea technology specialists Viper Subsea with the support of Total, BP, Shell, and Chevron, and will help to identify the location of electrical faults on subsea oil and gas installations. This will enable field operators to better plan for repair or replacement of failed components, and will save the industry many millions in halted production.

t e f i f g stor o ts s in o L ea id

The shallow water trial in Portishead Quays marina will run in phases and last up to 12 months. The initial trial will last three months, during which time the V-IR technology suite will undergo communications and performance testing in a sea water environment that includes the use of 2km of subsea cable which has been deployed onto the bed of the marina. Although a shallow water trial, the main components are already designed for 3000m water depth. Following the shallow water trial there will be a period of further equipment qualification before the system is fully commercialised later in 2016. Explaining the system, Neil Douglas, Managing Director of Viper Subsea said: “Offshore oil and gas platforms are connected to underwater oil and gas production equipment with electrical cables. Failure of these connections occur when seawater penetrates and contacts the electrical conductors. This can happen at any point on the cable length or in the plugs and sockets at either end. Seabed located equipment needs to operate for the lifetime of the oilfield - typically 20 years or more - but when failures occur they can halt production. Identifying the exact location and nature of the failure is time-consuming and difficult with existing technology. Recovery and repair of cables is fraught with risk and is very

Viper Subsea team with the technology prior to its deployment expensive. “V-IR brings together products and services developed by Viper Subsea, and when integrated, these innovative technologies create a system that provides a complete subsea system electrical integrity map. The value of the system to the offshore oil and gas industry is illustrated by the backing and support we receive from major operators.” Employing 46 staff, Portishead based Viper Subsea has emerged as one of the world’s most exciting and innovative suppliers of products and services for the international offshore oil and gas industry. The business has enjoyed year-on-year growth since foundation, and the company exports its products around the globe.

Community News in New plans for crabbing pontoon Portishead Quays Marina

A

proposal has been approved to build a new community facility in the heart of Portishead Quays marina. The planning application outlined the provision of a children’s crabbing pontoon along with a new boat sales office which will be situated on an adjacent pontoon. The facility will be located at the North Eastern end of the marina adjacent to the public promenade; an area which already attracts a lot of visitors. People currently partake in crabbing off the granite steps and it is hoped that the purpose-built pontoon will provide a safer alternative for ‘messing about by the water’ on a

summer’s day. In addition, the new boat sales office will support the current operation, with the unique advantage of enabling boats for sale to be berthed adjacent to the facility. Both elements will bring activity, amenity and interest to the marina and to the local community. Marina Manager, Keith Berry says: “Portishead Quays marina is a real attraction and we want to make sure that it is an amenity for the whole community. It is a bustling and vibrant place to be and with the addition of the new pontoons, we aim to provide an attractive community facility as well as enhancing the offering for our boating users.” Over recent months the marina has played host to a range of vessels old and new, including narrow boats, lifeboats and survey boats. The facility is also seeing a very healthy contract renewal and with a record number of boats ashore and a waiting list in place, the area is full of life and bustling with activity.

Race Night hailed a success

T

he Gordano Breakfast Rotary Club held a Horse Race Night on March 18, raising almost £1,000 for the Nicola Corry Support Foundation; one of the group’s principle charities. President Elect Bernd Langheim reported: “The money will help the Nicola Corry Support Foundation in its work providing financial support, transport assistance and holiday breaks for families with small children, where one of the parents has cancer. The charity was originally founded to help Nicola and her family, from Bristol, in her fight against a very rare cancer.” The Gordano Breakfast Rotary Club supports many local and international charities, holding fundraising events throughout the year and backing projects which will benefit local Gordano Valley communities. The group meets every second and fourth Thursday morning for breakfast and every fourth Thursday holds speaker meetings which cover a range of interesting topics. Anyone interested in learning more is welcome to go along to a meeting. The club is also looking for more active members to join - there is no requirement for full membership. Community News imalayan Portishead man takes on H challenge for Unicef

L

ocal resident Darren Toner has completed an eight-day trek in the Himalayas to raise money for Unicef, the world’s leading children’s

charitable organisation. This was a completely self-funded trip and all the money raised will support Unicef’s work to protect children in danger, transform their lives and build a safer world for tomorrow. Unicef works in 190 countries and ensures more of the world’s children are fed, vaccinated, educated and protected than any other organisation. Darren joined friend Matthew Gower and four others last month to undertake the challenge,

Matt Gower and Darren Toner

which saw them scale up to 5,000m on the route from Yuksom to Goecha La pass in India. The group chose to support Unicef largely as a response to the current conflicts in Syria, Yemen and South Sudan and the dangers children are currently facing in these countries as many families are forced to flee their homes. Darren adds: “I also wanted to support the work Unicef does over here in the UK in helping to prevent abuse and child trafficking – issues which do not appear to be in decline.” On returning to lower altitude Darren was able to get in touch with friends and family and was completely overwhelmed by the support that people back home had shown. He said: “We did it!! We all reached our destination and made it as close as possible to Mt Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest mountain - and we all made it back, safe and sound! “This has been the biggest physical and mental challenge of my life. Fresh challenges arose every day but we

worked as an incredible team and pulled each other through.” If you would like to make a donation to Darren’s fundraising venture and support Unicef’s vital work, please text HIMA80 & £amount to 70070 or visit www.justgiving. com/Darren-Toner1 For further information on the challenge please contact Victoria Whitehead on 07840 439714 or email Victoriaj9@hotmail.co.uk

Marriage and signing on the pre-nuptial dotted line… Pre-nuptial agreements are on the rise. Marjha Golding-Evans, Head of Family Law at QualitySolicitors Burroughs Day, talks about their role and how they might apply to you. Prenuptial agreements are not just for the super-rich or the thrice married who have had their fingers burned. ‘I don’t need a prenup!’ Many people have heard of a pre-nuptial agreement (sometimes known as pre-nups) but very few people think they need to consider getting one. They might believe they’ve got nothing to protect or they will always agree with their current partner if they did happen to separate in the future. Many also think pre-nuptials are unromantic and only for the wealthy. It is clear that whilst pre-nups make even more sense when significant assets are at stake, for many they can be a worthwhile and legally savvy step for any marrying couple to take. To understand why, you may need to know what one can achieve. Unravelling the legal jargon A pre-nuptial agreement is a legal document signed by both parties before they enter into a marriage or civil partnership. Post-nuptial agreements are very similar although as the name suggests, a post-nuptial is signed after the marriage or civil partnership has taken place. The purpose of such an agreement is to set out in writing exactly what will happen if your marriage or civil partnership comes to an end, and is focused on your finances. This can include how you will deal with your money, savings, property, pensions and possessions;

the agreement can also set out when one party would pay maintenance to the other. It may be that you want to ‘ring-fence’ an asset from any future financial settlement or agree how it might be split. When might I want to talk to my partner about a pre-nup? • When one or both of you has a property or substantial savings, such as a house you owned or inheritance you received before you met. • When one or both of you has a large pension. • When one or both of you has children from a previous relationship who you want to ensure you provide for. • When one or both of you has a business or shares of your own. • When your income is currently, or expected to be, much higher or much lower than your partner’s. • When you simply want to agree what will happen about your future matrimonial assets now. The legal enforceability of these agreements was confirmed in the English courts in 2010 - it was decided that these agreements can be given “decisive weight” in a financial settlement. This means that whilst these agreements are not automatically binding, they are given very strong weight by a judge when putting a financial settlement in place. If you both agree, there is no need for a court hearing, the agreement is simply followed.

‘So if I did want a pre-nup….’ In order to be valid, the agreement must meet certain conditions: • Both parties must fully disclose all of their current financial assets. • The agreement must be signed voluntarily and without coercion or force. • It is signed a reasonable time before the wedding. Judges have suggested around 3-6 months in advance, but it must be finalised and signed no less than one month before the ceremony or it will not be valid. • Both parties must have received separate legal advice. • The agreement must provide for each party’s needs and any children’s needs. Other cases have suggested that ‘needs’ means ‘reasonable’, without necessarily being generous or excessive. These conditions undoubtedly leave an issue of interpretation but the current law gives considerable weight to well drafted agreements. In turn this gives you peace of mind that you have already agreed what will happen in the future, without the added difficulty of reaching a settlement when emotions are running high. Many people think of a pre-nup like an insurance policy; it does not mean you wish for the worst to happen, but you are pragmatic about protecting each other if it does. Want to know more?

he White Hart in Westonin-Gordano re-opened in November 2015 after an extensive renovation and refurbishment. It had been closed for over two years, during which time the village fought hard to save the historic pub and hub of the village from developers. Eventually Mike and Chris Yeatman, the owners of popular restaurant Venga in Portishead, decided to take on the pub and perform a mammoth makeover. With a huge amount of time and investment they have done an amazing job, transforming what was a run-down site into a welcoming and stylish restaurant and pub with a unique garden. Anticipation is building for the summer months already as early visitors to the pub have seen the potential of its beautiful outside space and stunning views. The White Hart now offers a seasonal menu of local, freshly prepared produce which changes every few weeks. Alongside this there is a traditional pizzeria menu; hand crafted by resident pizza chef David. Celebrate the May Day Bank Holiday in style

Helicopter Museum hosts WWII Hangar Dance

A

s part of ‘Museums at Night’, a national cultural initiative, Weston’s Helicopter Museum is throwing open its doors for a very special evening of jive dancing and swing music. Tickets are now on sale for the popular annual charity event, which features a live performance by swinging sensations ‘The Hot Tin Roofs’. Museum Manager Lee Mills said: “During the evening our aircraft hangars will rock to the sounds of WWII era music and American swing, while our guests dance the night away in an authentic aviation hangar setting with real historic aircraft and wartime weaponry and decoration. “All our volunteers will be dressed up in period costumes ranging from Spitfire Pilots and Land Girls to American G. I’s. There will also be a licensed wine bar serving drinks and refreshments throughout the evening and a complimentary buffet - with no fear of wartime rationing!” Smart dress is requested with period attire optional, so if anybody is looking for the opportunity to dress up in 1940s style or dust off the old flight jacket or poodle skirt, this is the ideal opportunity. The event will take place on Saturday May 14 from 7:30pm to midnight. Tickets are £14,

which includes the evening buffet, and can be purchased from The Helicopter Museum on 01934 635227. The Helicopter Museum is a Registered Charity and houses the World’s largest collection of rotor craft.

2

016 marks 50 years since Portishead Youth Centre first opened its doors. To celebrate, a Family Fun day will be held on Saturday May 21. A host of activities will be on offer throughout the day, including games, stalls, face painting and a raffle and cake sale. The centre’s outdoor area will provide space for inflatables and a climbing wall. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. Kim Dodd, Assistant Centre Manager, says: “This community fair promises to be a really fun day and it’s a great opportunity for us to mark the achievement of 50 years working with young people in Portishead.” The ongoing celebrations will also feature a public exhibition which will be held throughout May, recounting the work of the centre over the last 50 years. In the coming months Radio Dynamic, the centre’s very own radio station, is also planning to broadcast a series of shows with music and news from each of the last five decades. For more information on the forthcoming festivities, please visit www.portisheadyouthcentre.co.uk or go to the Portishead Youth Centre Facebook page.

The Great Run comes to Bristol

T

he new Great Bristol 10k, will take place on May 15. Previously known as the runbristol 10k, the event follows a largely flat route and will share much of its course with the well-established half marathon, starting and finishing in Bristol’s historic harbourside. The course will also take in the stunning Avon Gorge and twice pass under Brunel’s famous Clifton suspension bridge, finishing off on Anchor Road. Also new for 2016 is the Great Bristol Family Mile. Children aged

three and over can take part in the mile distance with their friends, family and siblings. It’s a great way to get youngsters involved and all children who cross the finish line will be rewarded with their very own medal. Bristol Children’s Hospital charity, The Grand Appeal has been nominated as the official local charity of the event and participants will be encouraged to fundraise for this cause. Q A

: How can my pet become a life saver?

: Fresh blood from donor cats and dogs is hard to come by. Vale Vets have created a blood donor register for cats and dogs, to promote awareness and recruit prospective new blood donors. Blood transfusions are used in the treatment of conditions such as anaemia and bone marrow diseases. Transfusions are also vital for replacing blood loss from severe injury, such as road traffic accidents. For your pet to become a blood donor it needs to be: • Aged between 1 and 8 years of age • A cat weighing over 4kg, or a dog weighing over 25kg • Healthy and fully vaccinated and never travelled abroad

In our Blood Donor Clinic, we will collect a tiny sample of blood to determine the blood-type, record it, and talk to you about the process of donating. If a patient matching your pet’s blood type is in need of a transfusion, you may be contacted to attend the hospital with your pet for donation. We are in desperate need of new donors. If you think your pet could be a potential life saver please telephone Vale Vets on 01275 847 400.

he Portishead Try-a-Tri is a yearly event and it is tailor-made for beginners, especially firsttimers, at the sport of triathlon. With manageable distances and the combination of a pool swim and a flat run course, it is a great way to get a taste of the UK’s fastest growing endurance sport. The event is organised by the UK Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, who have been promoting sporting events in the UK since the late 1970s. The event includes a swim of 264m in Portishead Open Air Pool, a 17k bike course between Portishead Esplanade and Clevedon and a 4k run, which follows a flat three-lap circuit of the Lake Grounds. Try-a-Tri takes place on Sunday May 29 at 8am. The entry fee is £34.50 but there are a limited number of free entries available to those who can bring helpers to the race to act as marshals at the swimming pool and finish line. For more information visit: uk.srichinmoyraces.org/triathlon or contact Garga Chamberlain on 0770 2410797

leven-year-old Amy Owen has won the accolade of the best climber in her age group in the whole of the South West region. Amy, who goes to St Peter’s School, has competed in the national finals of the BMC Youth Climbing Series for several years running, coming 19th in the country at her first national final and 25th last year when she was the youngest competitor in her age bracket. She trains at Undercover Rock in St Werburghs, Bristol; a great facility where the coaches are really bringing out Amy’s natural ability. Dad Jamie says: “Amy was always a climber. She was climbing out of her cot at 10-months and at three years she was climbing everything! When she was six, my wife Kirsty took her to a climbing taster session and she was hooked.” Amy has always excelled at sport when playing football for Portishead Girls she scored a whopping 57 goals in her first season. Football is taking a back seat for now though as Amy focuses on her climbing, training three times a week and loving every minute. This year Amy is planning to try outdoor climbing for the first time and at such a young age, her future looks bright. Once again she is set to compete in the grand final of the BMC Youth Climbing Series in Edinburgh and we wish her all the best.

T

T

he Queen’s Bentley Mulsanne limousine has gone on sale for just under £200,000 on Auto Trader recently. This rolling piece of history was reserved for exclusive use by the Monarch during a two-year period from 2012 to 2014 when the Bentley was retired from Royal duties. The Mulsanne was used by the Queen during her Diamond Jubilee celebrations and for a unique visit to 10 Downing Street where she attended her firstever cabinet meeting with Prime Minister, David Cameron, who greeted her on her arrival. The limousine was first prepared and registered by Bentley in Crewe at its headquarters for exclusive use by the Queen. The Royal wheels features several upgrades including walnut burr veneered picnic tables, door panels and rear quarter vanity mirrors. There are embroidered Bentley emblems to all seats and the car runs on optional 21-inch classic alloy wheels. The interior boasts a full leather interior, air conditioning, driver information system and

satellite navigation system, which still has Windsor set as the home address. The Mulsanne is powered by a massive 6.75-litre engine with over 500bhp and is capable of dashing to 60mph in just over five seconds. The Bentley is capable of hitting a top speed of 184mph, which would ensure her Majesty would never be late to any of her many pressing engagements. This Ex-Royal Household Bentley Mulsanne covered less than 5,000 miles during its two-year service with the Queen and is now offered in immaculate condition having covered a total of 5,826 miles.

he South West Coast Run, now in its 53rd year, will return to North Somerset on Sunday, May 8. The event, which is organised by the Vintage Motor Cycle Club’s (VMCC) Bristol Section, welcomes motorcycles and cars of any age and type and follows a route with no adverse gradients. Participants meet at 10am for an 11am start at Failand Village Hall and can follow one of two routes; a 47 mile short route or a 60 mile long route. The short route will broadly follow the original route with a coffee stop at Portishead and lunch at the Salthouse Fields in Clevedon. In the afternoon everyone meets back at the hall for signing-off with the presentation of class awards at 3.30pm. All finishers will receive a commemorative award.

Bereavement

Julie McCarthy (front) with Jane Yates (left) and Lin Hignell (right)

New Funeral Director for Portishead firm

L

ocal Funeral Director Julie McCarthy has stepped into the shoes of well-known and respected Funeral Director Peter Connell, who recently retired. Julie, a fully qualified Principal Funeral Director has worked within Co-operative Funeralcare for the last seven years in Weston-super-Mare. When Peter, having sold the business to the Co-operative a number of years ago, decided to retire, Julie was the obvious choice to become the designated Funeral Director for Portishead. For Portishead-based Julie it is something of a homecoming. She says: “I am pleased to be working within the community in Portishead. I hope that as people get to know the new team here they will find us to be approachable, friendly and supportive.” Julie will be joined by qualified Funeral Arrangers Linda Hignell and Jane Yates, who are both from Portishead and have worked for the company for a number of years. The new team will continue to offer the exemplary service for which the company is known and do everything necessary to provide sensitive and professional support when it is most needed. Julie says: “The business will continue to operate as it always has and having local people at the helm, we will always put the community of Portishead at the forefront of what we do.” The company will continue to hold a Bereavement Support Group every Tuesday, which will be supported by existing colleague Patsy Roach, who has many years of experience. To find out more about the Bereavement Group, Funeral Services provided or request a brochure please call 01275 849239.

information and support. The Dementia Alliance is an organisation which falls under the umbrella of the Alzheimer’s Society and provides support on a local level; in North Somerset there are branches in Weston, Clevedon and Portishead. The goal of the Portishead Dementia Alliance is primarily to raise dementia awareness within the local population. Sometimes that can mean greeting people on the high street and handing out leaflets, sometimes it is providing activities and services for people living with dementia. There are also a team of Dementia Champions who can offer free short dementia awareness sessions to members of the public. A recent initiative has seen the alliance working with local businesses. Brenda Birkinshaw of the group explains: “We have been targeting the Portishead shops and encouraging them to sign their staff up to be Dementia Friends. They can do it online or come along to a session and once all the staff have participated, the company is able to display a sticker in their window to show that

their establishment is a dementia-friendly area. So far Solelution, Specsavers, Morgan Westley, Alliance Homes, Home Instead and Impero Lounge have participated and it is hoped that more will come on board. “After taking the course, staff should find it easier to pick up on the signs of dementia, be calm and patient and offer help in any way they can. It offers peace of mind to dementia sufferers and carers.” The Portishead Dementia Alliance runs a carers’ group at the Lighthouse Café at St Nicholas Church, Nore Road on the fourth Tuesday of the month from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The group provides supervised games, crafts and activities for people with dementia whilst their carers meet for coffee in an informal support group. The next dates are May 24 and June 28. For more information contact Cathy Gale on 07580 716510 or 01275 848683. On Friday May 20 The Portishead Dementia Alliance will be at the Impero Lounge on Portishead High Street from 9am to 12pm for people to talk to about accessing support or becoming a Dementia Friend. The group is always on the lookout for new volunteers to join or to help out. If you are able to help, even for one day a month, please contact Brenda Birkinshaw on 07896 633900.

FOR THE SHAKE UP SHAKE UP SUMMER

O

n Saturday April 9 Slimming World consultant Ali Johnson was able to proudly announce to members of her group that they had won the “Warm and Friendly Award” for the whole of the North Somerset West district for March 2016. The accolade is given to the group with the highest combined total of average weight loss for new members, average weight loss for existing members, the highest number of new members joining in a month and the highest retention of members in the same period. Winning this award is a particularly big achievement given that the group is the newest in the whole district. After losing two and a half stones with Slimming World, Ali was so inspired. She says: “I want to help others who feel like I felt this time last year. I feel like a totally different person. If I can do this, anyone can!” It was this belief that led Ali to become a Slimming World consultant and open a new group in Portishead back in January. The group meets every Saturday at 9.30am in PWMC - The BS20 Sports Bar & Venue, Slade Road, Portishead and has grown week on week. On day one there were 27 new members and now there are 50 regulars and Ali will be looking into opening a double session within the next few months. For more information regarding becoming a member of Ali’s Saturday morning group, please call 07714 420476 or email alijohnsonsw@gmail.com. Further group information is also available on her Facebook page “Slimming World Portishead Saturday Page” or online at www.slimmingworld.com/ slimwithalijohnson

Exercise of the Month: Alternating Barbell Shoulder Press with Press Behind the Neck by Matt Bembridge Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out. This month he offers advice on hip thrusts. his has long been one of my favourite exercises for shoulders: Alternating Barbell Shoulder Press with Press Behind the Neck. Many perform one exercise or the other, but I’ve seldom seen it performed alternating between the two exercises, which is great for improving strength and control of the whole shoulder complex, deltoids and rotator cuff muscles, provided there’s no contraindications. The premise is simple, starting in an orthodox position for Barbell Shoulder Press (preferably standing, rather than seated), with the barbell at shoulder height, press the bar overhead, as usual, moving your head/ torso backward slightly, out of the bar’s path. Then, lower the bar behind your head, slightly moving your head/

T

torso forward, out of the bar’s path. Press the bar overhead. Bring it back down in front to assume the start-position. Repeat. The extra requirement of the shoulders rotator cuff muscles to control the stability of the joint through the transition of the lift is fairly substantial, compared to an orthodox shoulder press. For this reason, I recommend lifting only half to 2/3 of a usual shoulder pressing weight and performing a minimum of 8-10 FULL-repetitions, which, from experience, you may find easier counting to 16-20...counting each overhead press as 1-repetition. I like to perform this exercise with a barbell or using a Smith Machine, both variations are worth trying. The Alternating Barbell Shoulder Press with Press Behind the Neck has many merits and should be considered above many ego lifts and fashionable lifts. For a video demonstration, please visit Matt’s free resource www.GymProfessor.com.

T

his year’s annual Midnight Walk in aid of St Peter’s Hospice is set to be more fun and colourful than ever before with a brand new carnival theme for 2016. Bristol’s most popular fundraising event will return to the city on Saturday, July 9, when hundreds of women from across Bristol and the South West will take to the streets for a five mile or 10 mile night time walk around the city. This year, in a nod to the Rio Olympics, organisers have planned a carnival themed event, which will feature local Samba and Afro-Brazilian dancers and participants will be encouraged to dress in carnival attire with feathers and bright colours. Taking in all the sights of Bristol including the ss Great Britain, the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the Harbourside, the seventh annual Midnight Walk event aims to raise in excess of £100,000 for terminal patient care in Bristol and will kick off at 10.30pm from Ashton Gate Stadium. St Peter’s Hospice events fundraiser Maria del Carmen Moon Park said: “The Midnight Walk is our most well-attended fundraiser and has become one of the most popular events in the Bristol calendar over the past few years because of its fun atmosphere. “It’s great to see groups of friends and family come together, dress up and sing and dance their way around the route. With two distances to choose from, this is an event that anyone can take part in. It’s not competitive at all, but it’s a great achievement to complete. “With the added element of the Carnival theme this year, we’re expecting a huge turnout! The ladies always put great effort into wearing pink so I can’t wait to see the

crowds of people dressed for carnival walking through the streets of Bristol. There will be amazing dancers getting everyone going and there will be a Samba warm up. “As ever we are looking for as many people as possible to take part and we need volunteer marshals to help on the night too.” Earlybird registration for the Midnight Walk is available now and those who register will receive an events pack, including a t-shirt. For more information or to sign up, visit http:// midnightwalk. stpetershospice. org.uk.

Hypnotherapy to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

S

ome of you may know that April was IBS Awareness Month, but how many of you know that hypnotherapy can help? Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common, functional disorder of the digestive system and gut. It’s a long-term condition and affects approximately one in five people during their lifetime. IBS causes the bowel to be very sensitive causing recurring pain or discomfort in the abdomen. Many people find their symptoms to be an occasional nuisance, other people find the condition seriously affects their quality of life. IBS can develop at any time. Hypnotherapy is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as an effective method of treating IBS Symptoms can vary but common ones include constipation, diarrhoea, pain (ranging from mild to severe), discomfort in the abdomen, bloating, gas, indigestion, feeling full, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, cramping, heartburn, muscle pains. Some evidence suggests that a person’s emotional state, especially intense feelings of anxiety and stress, can cause symptoms to worsen. Hypnotherapy to manage stress can change our state of mind and have an impact on our physical well-being. To find out more about how Hypnotherapy can help you, call Rae at Harbourside Hypnotherapy on 01275 750175/07584 035873 or see www.harbourside-hypnotherapy.co.uk.

Sarah and Chris attended Robert John’s fantastic fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West last September and it was a chance remark at that event which has led to them taking on the Salon. “I made a joke about taking over the salon, if ever Bob and Jenny decided to sell Clevedon and it all started from there.” Sarah explained. “I have always retained my passion for hairdressing and I felt the time was right – I have always wanted my own salon and we are both looking forward to this new venture.” Sarah will be working with the existing team in Clevedon, the only initial change being that the salon will be renamed Clevedon Hair Company. Jenny added: “It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have worked with the team of talented stylists in Clevedon and to have been part of the business community in the Triangle area of the town for almost 30 years. “In addition to thanking the girls for their loyalty and friendship Bob and I would like to thank the Clevedon clients for their support, loyalty and best wishes and wish Sarah, Chris and the Clevedon Hair Company team every success for the future.”

Allotment Virgins - May 2016 by Lori Rowsell

Lori Rowsell and her family have been sharing their allotment experiences with Gordano Living readers ever since they were first allocated a plot at Gertie Gales allotments in North Weston back in 2011. In return for her regular blog, Gordano Living has made a monthly donation to the Portishead Stroke Group. Lori experienced a stroke when she was in her forties and was instrumental in setting up the group, which offers practical advice and support for stroke survivors and carers. The group runs a dropin café at Clarence House in Portishead from 10:30am on the first Friday of each month.

T

he fifth anniversary of Allotment Virgins! Who would have believed that we could witter on about allotments for five years? (don’t answer that). It’s been amazing and a great thing to do. More and more people comment on recent pieces or recipes and we’ve had loads of laughs and not too many tears. But all good things come to an end and a fifth anniversary is a good point to say goodbye from the Allotment Virgins. It’s hard to know what to write in the final instalment but in the hope we can help future allotmenteers (still loving that

word) here’s our top ten tips: Read several books/articles, get the basics under your belt then try to stick to one trusted one like our ‘mate’ Alan. Remember what you actually like to eat! We’ve grown many things simply because we panicked at the garden centre or we’ve received veg kits for Christmas pressies.

1. 2.

3. 4. 5.

Draw out a plan of your plot/patch so you know where everything’s going to go. Grow your veggies in groups (Alliums, Roots, Brassicas, Legumes).

Have a four year rotation plan which helps with soil fertility and weed control (yeah right!).

6.

Don’t panic when the plan goes out the window and you end up growing anything, anywhere.

7.

Don’t panic if it doesn’t grow. Pop to the supermarket, buy cheap veg, sprinkle with soil and go home via the allotment.

8.

Try and get to your plot regularly. It’s amazing how quickly it can all get out of control.

Leek & potato soup

Serves 4 • 700g potatoes, peeled and diced • 1 large leek, sliced (last year’s crop hiding in the freezer) • 1 large onion, peeled and chopped • 1.2 litre vegetable stock • 2 bay leaves • Salt & black pepper • 100g fat free natural fromage frais Take 150ml of stock, add onions and bay leaves. Bring to boil and simmer for 5 mins. Add potatoes, leeks & remaining stock. Season well. Boil, then simmer for 25 mins until tender. Discard bay leaves, blend until smooth. Stir in fromage frais and reheat gently. Season to taste. Serve with a nice crusty loaf with lashings of butter. For those celebrating anniversaries add a bottle of prosecco!

pring is here and with it the promise of warmer days and lighter nights. At this time of year we tend to look to the garden and start to anticipate more time spent outdoors. But maybe you have had some damage in the recent storms. Even if you’ve been lucky enough to avoid that, it is likely that your outdoor space is still in need of a bit of TLC after the winter months. These jobs can seem daunting to the best of us, but whether you are in need of a new fence or repairs to an old one, or you want a new patio area so you can soak up the sun this summer, Advanced Fencing and Landscaping can help.

Owner Toby Naish has been in the business for six years and set up on his own in 2015. He says: “I can help with all your gardening needs. I lay patios and hard landscaping from scratch, put in new fences and repair damaged ones, and lay artificial grass. I can also offer garden clearances and hedge trimming.” Advanced Fencing and Landscaping will handle every part of the job, from supplying materials, to taking away old items for free. The company covers the North Somerset area, including Nailsea, Clevedon, Portishead and Yatton. So just give Toby a call on 07519 354287 and look forward to enjoying your garden this springtime.

T

he recent changes in the stamp duty for rental property has produced a sudden surge of available new rental properties to the market and giving tenants a choice of homes to live in. This however doesn’t seem to have had any adverse effect on the monthly rental in the North Somerset area and so agents continue to search for more new landlords to feed many tenants knocking on their doors. The housing market has also held on through a slow start to the year and is bouncing into Spring with great gusto. The levels of new instructions is starting to rise after a sleepy winter and it seems that the BS20 location is the place to be with house prices looking to continue upwards. Mike Taylor Machinery “springs” into action By Mike Taylor

S

pring has been really busy at Mike Taylor’s and we have been absolutely rushed off our feet. That said, our new IT system has really helped us cope with the extra workload. We have enjoyed seeing all the old customers and have welcomed many new ones. We are tucked away in the back streets of Nailsea at Unit 6, Southfield Road Trading Estate, so no one sees us in passing, but the word is spreading and our customer base is growing. For everyone the first cut was a bit of a struggle as the grass was very long after the mild wet winter. However thereafter the night-time temperature

has remained cold and the grass has not really started growing. Don’t worry it will and that’s when our” breakdown” season starts. If you have any problems with your garden machinery we are here to help. Our experienced mechanics can get you back up and running in a jiffy. However if your machines have “had it” or are beyond economic repair (BER) then we can supply any machinery that you might need. Just remember Mike Taylor Machinery is your local “One Stop Shop” for all you need for your garden maintenance.

Cyber criminals are getting smarter! by

Roger Whitfield of Nortech Computers

A

few months ago I warned you that there was a cyber-crime wave coming, and sure enough it arrived with many people being scammed for small to medium amounts of money. The ones that really hit the news however were the big companies that lost data such as TalkTalk and Sony. You may be thinking that you are quite safe as maybe you are not a customer of these big organisations, but this could not be further from the truth. You see they may not have stolen your details, but what they did get was millions and millions of passwords. Now maybe by themselves these passwords are useless, and on the surface of it this may seem to be true, but what this does is it enables the criminals to discover what the most popular passwords are. It seems that humans are creatures of habit, and although we think we are being original in fact many of us use exactly the same passwords. The top 10 passwords in use are 123456, pa#sword, 12345678, 1234, p#ssy, 12345, dragon, qwerty, 696969, and mustang. This is just the tip of the iceberg with a little searching online you can easily find the top 10,000 passwords, and I would hazard a guess that you will probably find at least one of your passwords in this list.

Did you know that the average computer can test over one hundred million passwords per second, so don’t think that just because your password is near the end of the top 10,000 that it won’t be easy to find. So how do you select a secure password? Looking at the top 10 we can see that just numbers or dictionary words are useless, in fact words with numbers or other characters such as pa#sword are also useless. The only way to be in with a chance is to create a complex password. If you go to www.strongpasswordgenerator. com you can generate a great password, the only problem is that you probably will need to write it down somewhere because strong passwords are difficult to remember. Remember to be safe online and start changing your key passwords today, especially your email and social media passwords as these are the easiest to access. In the last few weeks we have seen many people receiving calls from what appear to be TalkTalk representatives, if you are a TalkTalk customer you may be easily fooled by these con artists. They already know your name, your address and your TalkTalk account number, because they stole this information from TalkTalk.

If you receive one of these calls it will sound plausible and there will even be background noise making it sound like a legitimate call centre. When you receive a call from someone claiming to be from any company alarm bells should start ringing, no matter how plausible they sound. First remember never to divulge any personal information or password; second if you are not 100% convinced then hang up; third if you must talk to them make them identify themselves. I find asking a simple question like “can you tell me how I pay my bill and give me the last 4 digits of the account/card number” will normally bring forward an excuse as to why they cannot do this, then you will know they are not who they are claiming to be, so just hang up. If you are unlucky enough to be caught out, and it really can happen to anyone, then first contact your bank and tell them you have been scammed; second stop using your computer as they will have compromised it with a program that reports to them everything you use it for, as well as any passwords you type in; and third back your computer up and re-install Windows and a good anti-virus, or bring it down to Nortech Computers and we will do it for you.

Business s

ver need Underwater Basket Wea a website… as if By Kate Tierney

T

here’s no doubt it’s a virtual minefield out there. Plenty of companies will promise you a ‘fully responsive’ website (that’s one that beautifully re-jigs itself for massive screens, mobiles and tablets), but they will need to utilise both the skills of a designer and developer to deliver the goods; cue that expensive bill. Some web design companies also make big promises that they can’t keep - like your website’s on-page Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) will get you page one on Google, but if there are 500,000 ‘Underwater Basket Weavers’ with a website in Portishead I don’t suggest you hold your breath (unless you’re already under the water and weaving away furiously). If you had your website done a few years’ ago, I hate to tell you this but it’s probably already out-of-date and lacking the functionality and content that Google requires to get you seen. I’m Kate - an Art Director and Copywriter, with over fifteen years’ experience in the ad and design industry. I’m also a bit of a coding geek and social media ninja, with a love of the Wordpress content management system and its capabilities. I particularly love helping small business start-ups with the whole package (including branding) and once everything is done, I’m here to give you tutorials on how to do your website updates yourself, help you build your list, send out automated newsletters, tweet to your heart’s content and share the love on Instagram (if that’s your thing). I can design a fully responsive website for you from as little as £400, depending on the navigation and functionality required. As a trained advertising ‘creative’ I’m also full of quirky marketing ideas that could give your business the edge over the competition. If you love penguins and don’t mind Liverpool supporters (!), visit my website at http://www.katetierney.net to find out more. My latest project and happy client is http://www.portisheadparent.co.uk.

Tax Matters Dividend planning Article by

Ali Redwood

Each month Ali Redwood of Tax Assist Accountants in Portishead answers some of your business and accountancy related questions.

Q:

I’ve heard about these dividend tax changes coming in. I run my own limited company, should I be doing anything about it?

A:

Under the present rules, dividends have been the preferred way for business owners to pay themselves because they are paid net of a notional 10 per cent tax credit. This tax credit effectively meant basic rate taxpayers could enjoy their dividends tax-free. But in the Summer Budget, it was announced that from April 2016 the tax credit would be replaced by a Dividend Tax Allowance of £5,000. Dividend income over the Allowance will be liable for tax at the basic rate of 7.5 per cent, 32.5 per cent for the higher rate and 38.1 per cent for the additional rate. Even under the new regime, dividends are still taxed at lower rates than other income and will continue not to attract National Insurance. But many people will see a rise in their tax bill. The effects of the dividend allowance are far reaching and planning what your company will pay you from April 2016 requires much more care and planning. I would therefore strongly encourage you to seek the advice of a professional. We would be happy to help
