Introduction

Editor’s note

W

ow, doesn’t time fly? The Gordano Living team and I hope you have all had a great summer. September means it’s back to school for the youngsters and on to college or uni for older students, so in time honoured fashion we have a packed education feature to mark the beginning of the new academic year. We extend our congratulations to the Portishead Gym Academy in Harbour Road. For those of you who don’t know, owner Liz Kincaid was chosen as a coach for team England at the Commonwealth Games and the Academy’s Ruby Harrold made the team competing in Glasgow and returning home

with a full set of medals. You can read more about Liz and Ruby on page 7. Thanks once again for all your feedback and contributions for all of our magazines: Gordano Living, Clevedon Living and Nailsea Living. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lori Rowsell for her regular Allotment Virgins feature, to Holly Gaunt for her contributions and to all the local community groups that keep our readers up to date with all their latest news. Don’t forget to look for the £10 note hidden on one of our adverts. Write and tell us where it is and you could be in with a chance of winning the cash. The correct answers will be entered in to a draw on September 12. Have a great September! Best wishes Mathew Rowbotham, Editor

FULL BRAKE FLUID CHANGE Brake fluid is hygroscopic. This means that it will readily absorb moisture. Moisture in your brake fluid does two things. When the brake fluid becomes hot under hard braking, the water in the brake fluid boils. This causes steam voids in the brake system which causes a dramatic reduction in braking capability. In severe cases it can cause braking capability to be lost completely. Moisture in the brake system also causes internal corrosion of brake system components resulting in loss of braking capability. Therefore, it is extremely important to change your brake fluid at the specified intervals

he quick thinking reaction of lifeguards at the open air pool averted tragedy this summer when a two-year-old boy fell into deep water. The pool was at capacity on July 24, as it has been every day since the school holidays started, with temperatures soaring to the high twenties most days. The staff were operating their busy day policy of 20 minute changeovers in the water to make sure everyone had a chance to splash about and cool off, when the

toddler slipped away from his family and toppled in to the main pool before anyone was able to stop him. Staff were supervising a changeover of swimmers when lifeguard Ben Waygood spotted the incident from the other side of the pool and blew the whistle. Fellow lifeguard Dylan MannersLolley, who was nearest, immediately dived in and rescued the child to the cheers of the watching crowd. The boy was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure but pool trustees were assured he was now fine and the parents asked the pool to pass their grateful thanks to the lifeguards. The pool received emails from visitors on the day congratulating the staff for their prompt action and they were also praised on Facebook and Twitter. Bumper season for Portishead Open Air Pool

P

ortishead Open Air Pool is experiencing another bumper year. Soaring temperatures through much of the summer saw visitor numbers rise and trustees are keeping their fingers crossed to achieve or exceed last year’s figures of 44,000 visitors. Throughout the school holidays the seafront pool has been open all day every day, but now, with the children returning to school, the pool hours will reduce slightly, The close of the season is set for September 21 but there will be a special opening on September 26 when volunteers will host a MacMillan Coffee Morning. There will be an opportunity to have a swim, coffee and cake for £5 to support this invaluable cancer charity. ortishead Jubilee Day Care is still going strong after 35 years. Every Wednesday a group of dedicated

helpers and numerous senior citizens meet in the Jubilee Hall in Slade Road, for a day of fun together. Members are collected by volunteer drivers at around 9.15am. Following a cup of coffee, various activities take place in the form of quizzes, slide shows, sing-a-longs and visiting entertainers. Fun, stimulation, and fellowship are the key aims. A hot lunch is enjoyed and the day is usually rounded off with a game of bingo before everyone is taken home at 2pm. Portishead in Bloom

ver the summer Portishead welcomed the judges for both the South West in Bloom competition and the nationals, Britain in Bloom. On two separate days in July the judges swept in to town, which was looking its best after teams of volunteers had worked tirelessly, pulling out all the stops to ensure Portishead was all spick and span. Members of Portishead in Bloom will travel to Trowbridge on September 18 for a ceremony during which the results of the regional competition will be announced. The results of the national contest will be revealed on October 16. Portishead in Bloom chairman Sandy Tebbutt said: “The judges seemed to be impressed with everything they saw. A huge thank you goes to all the volunteers; it was a great team effort across the town. We are keeping our fingers crossed for a good result.” Portishead in Bloom is a voluntary group that keeps Portishead looking good florally throughout the year, as well as weeding, cutting back overgrowth and generally tending public gardens, meadows, flower beds and open spaces. They are always looking for new volunteers to join them and welcome any help from driving and admin to weeding and planting. For more information visit www.portisheadinbloom.org.uk or call Sandy on 01275 843566.

News from the Gordano Society T

he latest edition of Posset Pieces, a twice yearly book on local history, is now available. Posset Pieces No.15 includes articles on Walton-in-Gordano, the Virgo family who grew Clevedon Violets in their nursery, an account of Victor Halliwell, the local man who was killed in the attempt to break the world speed record over water on Lake Windermere in 1930: the sad case of Hannah Wiltshire who died in the workhouse and a map showing the former power station site superimposed with a modern road layout. This edition is available from Morgan Westley in Portishead High Street and from Summit Outdoor Leisure, behind the High Street in Co-op car park or for more details visit www.gordanosociety.org.uk. The next edition of Posset Pieces will concentrate on Portishead and the Gordano Valley in World War One which will hopefully be in print at the end of the year. On another note…… The old power station gates that now stand at the entrance to Gateway Terrace, Port Marine are looking the worse for wear. Does anyone know who designed them and when they were erected please? It would be wonderful to get the gates restored before they deteriorate any further. If you can help call Sandy on 01275 843566.

For 18 years the Rotary Club of Portishead has been organising and running the highly successful annual Swimathon at the Parish Wharf Leisure Centre in Portishead. All teams who entered raised funds through sponsorship for the Great Western Air Ambulance and Children’s Hospice South West. Some teams also had 50% of the money they raised back for their own charity. The event also supports local schools and youth groups. The Rotary Club is very grateful for the

Community News

Supporting Za

Z

a Foundation, with its head office in Portishead High Street, is hoping local people and companies will continue to support the charity which supports a community in the Nkomazi region of South Africa. The organisation helps sustain a generation of vulnerable and orphaned young people and has established educational links between schools in North Somerset and schools in Nkomazi. In September, directors, Jayne MorrisThurgood and Kate Birnie will be returning to the Nkomazi along with new volunteer, Gill Baldwin from Backwell.

Visits to South Africa are always totally self-funded and are an important means of reviewing the projects the charity finances including the Zakhele music and drama group which works in schools, clinics and after school clubs delivering important messages about HIV medication, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, as well as addressing issues such as bullying and rape. In after school clubs, they also work with orphans and vulnerable children who learn essential life skills through play. Jayne, Kate and Gill will also be visiting the Thembalethu Community Library which the charity built and which opened in November 2013. Since then, the number of users has increased week on week, surpassing all expectations. In the last three months alone, 5,300 people have visited the library including on average 400 children a week. This will not only have been their first experience of accessing reading books but also of the expertise of a librarian who is available to help with their homework after school. The charity’s fundraising project for 2014 is to buy a new minibus to enable the Zakhele group to extend their outreach work in the region and to develop a mobile library provision, allowing many more school, orphans and vulnerable children in

the area to benefit from the thousands of books which local people in North Somerset donated last year. They are hoping to take delivery of the minibus during their visit. Finally, another important aspect of the visit is to take clothing (including dresses made by “Dress a girl around the world’ charity whose hub is in Nailsea), toys, and medicine which is difficult to secure in South Africa. So how can local people and companies continue to help? Drama students bring the house down

upils of the Cheryl Rowlands School of Drama brought the house down with their summer show ‘Wonderland’. Families, friends and members of the public made up an appreciative audience as the children, aged three to 12-year-old staged their summer show. With brightly-painted scenery and wonderful costumes and face paint, the youngest overall cast in the Drama School’s sixteen-year history joined the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and marched around the Red Queen’s Garden to a soundtrack put together by principal’s daughter, Melissa 16, along with an original bespoke song she wrote for the show entitled Welcome to Wonderland. The show was the result of months of hard work by the pupils, led by principal Cheryl, drama associate, Alex Corrigan and techie, Melissa. The drama school runs its classes from a studio at Portishead Youth Centre in Harbour Road. Anyone interested in sending their children along for a free trial class when the school re-opens on Saturday September 6 can call 07905 166 782 for an information pack. Moorhouse Farm Solar Array £200,000 needed to start building!

n June, Low Carbon Gordano (LCG), a community enterprise, invited members of the community to invest in the building of a 1.8 Megawatt solar array. In order to help pay for the 8,000 panels LCG launched a share issue with the aim of raising over £2million. It has so far raised £800,000 from not only ethical investors who want their money spent on local, low carbon projects but people who want a reasonable rate of return on their investment in a difficult economic climate. A £1million loan has been lined up so only £200,000 is now required to get the project underway. The share offer deadline has been extended to September 5. LCG is projected to provide investors with returns of around 7%. Further details and an application form can be found by visiting www.lcgshareoffer.org

n previous issues of Gordano Living, Portishead mum of two Holly Gaunt introduced readers to her blog entitled Do You Speak Autism? Holly and her husband Matt have two lovely children James and Sam. James is four and is on the autism spectrum, Sam is two, he is not. Holly decided to document the day to day life of an autism parent, in hope that it would give people more understanding, she has also discovered it has helped many parents in similar situations feel they are not alone. This month, as James moves forward and starts school, Holly highlights an organisation that provided her with a lifeline when she needed it most.

Future Bathrooms of Portishead 01275 844487

S

pringboard Opportunity Group has become such a central part of my life that I sometimes forget that most people don’t even realise it exists. And yet, for a small number of parents in North Somerset who have children with additional needs, it is a lifeline. From age three James started attending Springboard’s pre-school sessions. With usually no more than six children in a session, and three to four highly trained staff and volunteers, the level of support he receives there is second to none and the difference they have made to him is plain to see. It’s not just James that benefits, however; Springboard understand that having a child with additional needs has a profound effect on the whole family and are always there to listen and offer both practical and emotional support. Before arriving at Springboard, I had not appreciated the range of needs of the children attending. Some have more minor speech and communication delays, or behavioural issues, and just need that extra bit of support in the pre-school years; some, like James, have longer term difficulties like autism, for which early intervention will make a huge difference. Some of the children have more severe needs. Some children have a diagnosed condition, others don’t. Springboard caters for them all. Having depended on Springboard when other settings simply couldn’t offer James the level of support he needed, I often wonder at the fact that it is a charitable organisation. Springboard was set up in 1986 by a group of parents who felt there was no adequate provision locally for their children with additional needs. Although they are now subsidised by the local authority, ultimately Springboard could not exist without massive fundraising efforts and volunteers giving up their time. As such, I have tried to do my bit in various ways, most recently running the Bristol 10k with some of the Springboard staff and parents. As a small organisation making a real difference to the lives of local children, I can think of few worthier causes. We are now leaving Springboard as James is about to embark on his next adventure - school! Chances are, he may not remember much about his time at Springboard, but I will always owe them a debt of gratitude both personally and on James’ behalf. They have made such an incredible difference to James’ early years and I thank them from the bottom of my heart. Jemma Cooper, a BBC radio and TV personality who lives in Portishead, has been a patron of Springboard Opportunity Group since 2011. Jemma says: “Springboard is a wonderful organisation. Having visited both their Clevedon and Weston super Mare centres I have seen first-hand the support and care they provide and how it’s tailored to each individual child. Lifeboat

Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat rescue T

he Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat is manned by local volunteers and this will still be the case when the lifeboat is adopted by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). At the end of July the volunteer lifeboat crew were called to assist a yacht which had run aground off Clevedon beach in strong

winds and rough conditions. As the wind was blowing directly on to the shore with a rising tide, it soon became clear the yacht was in serious danger of being turned on to its side. Once the lifeboat was on scene it had less than one metre of water below the boat to work with. The yacht was now crashing down directly on to the sea bed. The volunteer crew had to work quickly and professionally to decide the best way to assist the person on the yacht. This was a tricky manoeuvre for the volunteers, but they decided the best option was for crewman Andrew Weston to swim to the casualty to get a line aboard. Volunteer crewman Andrew said: “When we arrived on scene it became immediately apparent this was going to be challenging, the yacht was aground and at times healing over as surf continued to pound the

vessel. As I approached I was acutely aware of the potential dangers with the yacht thrashing around in front of me. From a safe distance, I threw the line to the casualty.” The skipper on the casualty vessel said: “The lifeboat crew were absolutely brilliant; in particular the crewman who came to my boat. I was worried the boat was going to turn over with me underneath it. I am very grateful.” Once the lines were attached to the casualty, lifeboat helm, Ian Lazenby and crew member Dave Hurst, managed to pull the yacht from the beach. Andrew was then able to board the yacht and make his way to the bow of the yacht to secure a ripped head. The casualty was towed to Portishead marina where the yacht was handed UpandOver_134x97_UpandOver_134x97 04/03/2014 13:09 Page 1over to the Portishead Coastguards.

Lifeboat RNLI and Portishead and Bristol Lifeboat Trust thank local support for their fundraising appeal

J

ust 12 months after launching an appeal to raise £180,000 towards the cost of a new lifeboat station at Portishead, the RNLI is celebrating reaching its original target. However, the hard work does not stop there, buoyed by the support and generosity of time and money from local supporters, they are now looking to raise a further £52,000 which will pay for the volunteer lifeboat crew’s changing facilities. Building work started in March to build a new lifeboat station at the site of the former Masonic Lodge in Portishead after the RNLI’s trustees agreed to eventually adopt the independent Portishead Lifeboat Trust. In making the decision, the trustees said the formal adoption couldn’t go ahead until the lifesaving team had a home that was fit for purpose. At present they operate out of a garage at the local sailing club. With the remainder of the £1.9 million needed to fund the project being raised through other sources such as gifts in wills, major donors and trusts, the RNLI originally set the local fundraisers with a target of £180,000 to raise though the community. Exactly one year later, the fundraisers have smashed that target, along with support from many local RNLI fundraising branches in Gloucester, Bristol and Somerset.

Jon Yabsley, chairman of the Portishead RNLI Boathouse Appeal, said: ‘This is a fantastic achievement by the Portishead Lifeboat Trust fundraisers who put an enormous amount of effort into the annual events such as the Portishead Carnival, golf day, raft race and Festival on the Quay, and the many local RNLI fundraising branches who have already embraced the new lifeboat station and the volunteer lifeboat crew as their own. ‘It is down to the tireless efforts of these fundraisers and the incredible support from their local communities, schools and groups such as the Brownies, Guides and Cubs, who have held coffee mornings, raffles, fun days, sponsored walks and more to help raise the funds needed. This is a perfect opportunity to be able to say thank you to them all for their generosity, both in regards to the time given to organise these events and to those to have given money so kindly.” To donate £5 towards the appeal, text RNLI PORTISHEAD to 70300. Portishead - 50 years without a railway By Colin Howells – Vice chairman of Portishead Railway Group

T

his year will mark the 50th anniversary of Portishead being without a passenger rail service. On September 7 1964 the last regular passenger train left Portishead for Bristol. After nearly one hundred years of passenger service, the line was axed as

part of the Rail Rationalisation Programme recommended by Doctor Richard Beeching in the mid 1960’s. Dr. Beeching was asked by Prime Minister Harold MacMillan to carry out a cost saving exercise on the railway. He recommended more than 100 branch lines should be axed throughout the country. Subsequent governments implemented his recommendations and consequently more than 100 branch lines were lost including the Portishead branch line. However many of these lines have now been restored, either as heritage railways or as part of the national rail network. Campaign groups similar to Portishead Railway Group continue to campaign for the re-opening of their local line or railway station. It seems ironic now that just at the time Portishead began to grow from a village to a town, such a vital transport link was lost. For residents who may be new to Portishead, the original station opened on April 18 1867 on the site now occupied by Portishead Primary School. This station served the residents of Portishead well. The rail network, at that time, had several lines serving Portishead, carrying both passengers in and out of the town, and freight for local industry and the docks.

The original station was eventually closed and demolished in 1954 to make way for the Portishead B power station. A modern replacement for the demolished railway station was opened on January 4 1954, at the Cabstand, on the site now occupied by the petrol station. This station eventually closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching recommendations. Were you on the last train leaving Portishead in 1964? It really has been 50 years since the last passenger train left our town. The picture right taken by local resident Tony Everett shows the station shortly before it was demolished in 1965. Tony’s second picture above shows the view from a passenger train as it arrived in Portishead for probably the last time, although freight trains continued to use the line until 1981. Portishead Railway Group has produced

Railway

an artist’s impression (top right) of what a new Portishead railway station could look like. The artist’s impression, we believe, is in keeping with a statement made in the North Somerset Local Plan, which states: “The importance of the station as a principal gateway to the town forming first impressions - should not be underestimated. The character, quality and local distinctiveness of the town needs to be reflected in the design of the station

and its approaches.” Portishead Railway Group hopes the artist’s impression fulfils the criteria. The picture left shows the type of train that could be providing passengers with a service into Bristol in the near future. The campaign to bring back the rail service is progressing well. In 2008 North Somerset Council purchased the land the current track bed is on, funding for the project has been sought, the re-opening of the Portishead line has been incorporated into phase one of the MetroWest project, a project manager has been appointed, studies and surveys have been completed and station location consultations have taken place. The exact future location of the station has not yet been decided but the important thing is that the project is continuing to move forward. There is much that still needs to be done. Paths for “our” train need to be secured on the main line, Portishead routes need to be incorporated into the national time-table and the trains to run on the line need to be acquired. If the project continues to make progress, trains should be running on the line in 2019. The music and arts festival, which takes place on the weekend of Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21, will incorporate the Marlens 10th annual event, a community festival that aims to celebrate 85 years of Marine Lake and its proposed refurbishment in 2015. This year there will be even more live music, dance displays, community stalls, lake and field activities, as well as art and literary walks and talks, a lantern procession and fireworks. There are lots of spectacles and best of all, entry is free. Alternatively, if you’d like to get stuck in - run a stall, enter a team in the raft race or the festival’s inaugural pushball competition, email team@clevedontides. co.uk or get in touch via Clevedon Tides Facebook page.

Clevedon Community Hospital offers a range of NHS services to local residents, but many people across North Somerset are unaware of the facilities available. The hospital, formerly known as The Cottage Hospital, is in Old Street; it serves the whole of the North Somerset community and parking is free! The facility houses inpatients, which consists of a 17 bed unit over two floors with 15 beds for intensive rehabilitation following discharge from acute hospitals. Outpatient clinics are for both NSCP (North Somerset Community Partnership) Services and Acute Trust Services. Current clinics consist of Podiatry; Audiology; Cochlear Implants Service; Musculoskeletal Unit; Physiotherapy; Community and Sexual Health; Urology; Orthopaedics; Heart Failure; Cardiology and Gynaecology. An ultrasound service operates five days a week, there is an X-ray service, while the Clevedon Treatment Centre offers an Intravenous Drug Therapy service and Blood

Transfusions. The Minor Injury Unit (MIU) is a valuable facility. MIU operates on a drop in service with waiting times usually of less than one hour. At the MIU you can be treated for wounds and grazes; cuts needing stitches; trips and falls; broken bones, minor burns, minor ear and eye injuries; bites; minor injuries in children over three years of age and much more. M

embers of Portishead Town Twinning Association have recently returned from a visit to our twin town of Schweich in Germany. Members stayed with host families and visits included a day in Trier, which is a city founded by Imperial Rome, lunch at the Riesling Festival in Detzem , a trip to the Fissler Visitor Centre and a short journey to Herrstein, a town with a medieval centre. A farewell social evening was organised before the group’s return.

Den Dungen

D

uring the summer a silver lime tree planted at the Lake Grounds to mark the 25th anniversary of Portishead’s link with Den Dungen in The Netherlands was vandalised. The loss of a tree however soon appeared trivial in the face of the loss of life on the Malaysian plane which came down over Ukraine. Almost half of those on the plane were Dutch. Condolences were sent from Portishead to Den Dungen. In their response, they revealed that two of the families were neighbours of Jos Korsten, the chairman of Den Dungen . Portishead twinning chairman Pat Jouxson said: “We were unaware that the losses would be so personal to our friends in Den Dungen.”

The Rock Project Are you aged 7-11 or 12-18 and want to play in a band? Do you already play or want to play guitar, bass guitar, drums or have singing lessons? The Rock Project runs in Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea and Ashton and could provide just the opportunity you are looking for. This summer saw The Rock Project undertake its biggest gig to date in North Somerset. Over 100 members performed an array of songs to a crowd of over 300 people at Princes Hall in Clevedon. The first half saw the youngest members aged 7-11 perform tracks they had been working on over the past year. The concert opened with the Portishead students playing It’s My Life by Bon Jovi with Sam and Angus rocking the guitar solo! Every student from the Portishead, Clevedon and Nailsea groups then took turns to perform in their bands and belted out songs by The Beatles, AC/DC, One Republic, Pharrell Williams, The Monkees, Olly Murs, Passenger, The White Stripes and Imagine Dragons. The youngsters then finished off their half by closing with one of Elvis Presley’s classics - Hound Dog, with “Student of the Year” Lily singing solo and complete with guitar solos by Jonny and Sam. The second half then gave The Rock Project’s senior group aged 12-18 the chance to wow the crowd, members from Clevedon opened with Mr Brightside by the Killers with Tom tackling the very tricky opening riff. The whole senior set saw some great rock tunes blasted out like Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand and songs by Arctic Monkeys, Green Day and Kaiser Chiefs. Some old favourites were played such as Ever Fallen in Love by the Buzzcocks and School’s Out by Alice Cooper, as well as the tempo being brought down with an acoustic version of Crazy by Gnarls Barkley and a lovely duet by two of the Nailsea vocalists, Amber and Alice, singing Lily Allen’s rendition of Somewhere Only We Know. The show was rounded off by some of the Nailsea members playing The Pretender by the Foo Fighters.

What's it all about? The Rock Project is an after school group that runs for two hours every week during term time and mentors young people on guitar, bass guitar, drums or with singing lessons. All abilities are catered for so whether you have been playing for a long time and wish to join a band, or have always wanted to learn a rock instrument or sing in a band, why not join today? You could be on stage next year! If you do not have your own instrument, The Rock Project can provide one at no extra cost. Every week you will receive tuition in groups of up to five members per tutor, learning songs you have chosen. Then you will join everyone else in the main room for another hour of practicing in bands the songs you have learned in your lesson.

The Tutors The Rock Project tutors are a team of highly experienced and professional active musicians who between them have a vast array of impressive careers, working with artists such as Mark Ronson, Guy Chambers and Massive Attack, whilst gigging at venues and festivals such as Glastonbury, Sonisphere and London’s O2 Arena. Education Bristol Steiner School – Where education is a journey, not a race

F

or Bristol Steiner School, the focus is upon individuality, and on allowing a child to develop their own personal qualities and potential, as opposed to making them ‘fit’ into existing social constraints. Steiner schools form the largest group of independent, non-denominational and coeducational private schools in the world and the Steiner method has been widely praised. Yet despite this, and the fact that it is favoured by the UK’s leading universities, the effectiveness of Steiner education is still poorly understood by the general public. Bristol Steiner School, founded in 1973, was the first inner-city Steiner school in England and has been at the forefront of Bristol’s education system for more than 40 years. Bristol Steiner School has a rolling admission policy and takes children aged from six-16. Different ages mix and play together with a peer support

system in place. It uses a distinct curriculum which is structured to respond to the developmental needs of children, promote creativity and free-thinking, and to provide them with the skills they need to become balanced, wellrounded individuals. Its ethos is concerned with providing an unhurried and creative learning environment where pupils can experience the joy in learning and the richness of childhood, rather than the pressure of exam orientated or hot-housing education. Education 100% pass rate for nearly a decade at QEH

Q

ueen Elizabeth’s Hospital (QEH) boys have achieved 100 per cent pass rate at A’ level for nine years running, with 94 per cent of grades at A* to C and 80 per cent at A* to B in this year. One-third of individuals taking the examinations at the school achieved straight A* or A grades in their three or four A’ level subjects and 22 per cent were awarded at A*. QEH Headmaster, Stephen Holliday, said: “Again our exceptional A’ level and AS level results mean that about 10 per cent of boys from the year group have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge, in addition to a raft of others who will be off to medical, veterinary and dentistry schools and other top universities. “Our consistently strong record for top results is part of the much greater package that we offer to boys in preparing them for higher education and successful future careers. Boys leave QEH with not only the qualifications but the confidence to meet the challenges of world ahead.”

Success For Red Maids’ IB Diploma Students

Mrs Tobias added: “A key feature of the Diploma is that it demands a significant degree of independent study which universities actively seek in their undergraduates and of course is highly valued by employers. “The provision of the IB Diploma at Red Maids’ reflects our strong international focus which is supported by global links and fosters our very distinctive outward looking culture.” At the time of printing, Red Mails’ pupils, like students across England, were anxiously awaiting their A’level and GCSE results. Isabel Tobias, Headmistress at Red Maids’, said: “The IB Diploma programme aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people and these students have totally encapsulated the spirit. “We are thrilled for the students, their parents and their teachers at the outcomes.” In addition to studying six subjects the IB Diploma involves writing a 4,000-word extended essay and studying a Theory of Knowledge course focusing on critical thinking skills. The final compulsory element is Creativity, Action and Service – encouraging engagement in the arts and creative thinking, a focus on developing healthy lifestyles and conducting service within the community as a means to gaining fresh learning.

nternational Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students at the Red Maids’ School were amongst thousands in the UK to receive their results on July 5 with the release co-ordinated by the IB Organisation simultaneously to 140 countries around the world. Red Maids’ students secured another clean sweep, gaining 100% pass rate for the fourth year in a row, and an average Diploma score of 37.2 between the 15 students. Five candidates earned a score of 41 points out of a possible 45. Among them was 18-year-old Boglarka Nagy from Horfield who will now be starting a five-year chemistry degree at Imperial College in London, with a prestigious Thermo Fisher scholarship which is awarded to those who show exceptional talent in their chosen subject. Milly Loveday, also 18, and achieving 41 points, was in the heart of the Cambodian jungle when she received the news from school. Gordano School Exam Results

S

tudents at Gordano Sixth Form in Portishead have been celebrating yet another outstanding set of A’ level results. Head boy and girl have gained places at Oxford University – Suzie King to study English Literature and Adam Stevens to study Chemistry. They are joined by students Miles Chandler and Olivia Withers, who will both study English Literature. Rachel Kemp and Ben Hunter-Craig will be studying Veterinary Science and Engineering at Cambridge, respectively. Carys Gilbert and Rosie Treble have won places to study medicine. Just under three quarters of the grades achieved were A*-C and the proportion of grades at A*/A was just above 20%. One Gordano student will have understandably been distracted from worrying about A’ level results over the past weeks, but Ruby Harrold can now add her A level in PE to the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals she has just brought back from the Commonwealth Games.

High Street with a colleague for an evening meal. We received a very warm welcome from Abdul and his colleagues. The Ghandi offers an elegant dining experience in friendly relaxing surroundings. I chose onion Bhaji to start with, which is a favourite of mine, followed by house speciality ‘Ghandi Boostami’ for my main course (recommended by Abdul),served with pilau rice and chana masala. This definitely didn’t disappoint. Marinated chicken breast with an authentic spice and a touch of tarmarind. It was beautiful and full of flavour. I would highly recommend this dish. We finished our evening with a pistachio kulfi, which is an Indian style ice cream and absolutely delicious! We also were lucky enough to try the famous Ghandi ‘B52’ shooters, cocktail laced coffees which were excellently made and well worth a try. I would highly recommend a visit to The Ghandi for a highly enjoyable and mouthwatering lunch or dinner. I certainly look

forward to visiting again soon with my family and friends.

Health and Beauty Tom helps fight heart disease BHF Stores

C

oronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer and the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the country’s number one heart charity, is leading the fight against it. Former Gordano School student Tom Ford, who lives in Portishead, has always liked to keep fit, so he decided to put his fitness regime to good use by taking part in sponsored events to raise money for the BHF. He chose this charity because both his grandfathers have benefitted from major heart surgery which was partly funded by the BHF. Earlier in the year 25-yearold Tom, who is a project manager for Portishead based company Aspire, took part in the Bristol 10k run, competed in the Portishead Triathlon and raised funds in a spin-a-thon at Parish Wharf. Then last month he cycled 100 miles around London in less than seven hours, taking in parts of the 2012 Olympic route. Tom has already smashed his £1,000 fundraising target but it’s not too

L

ast month TV presenter and homes expert for BHF Furniture and Electrical stores Carol Smillie reminded Gordano Living readers that BHF Furniture and Electrical stores in the South West can make good use of any unwanted household items, they are also great places to find a bargain for your home. She said: “It’s great to think that by donating unwanted things from your home, you are helping to fight coronary heart disease. When you consider that selling two sofas could fund a young BHF scientist for a day, it really puts it into perspective how much these stores can help.” Join the fight for every heartbeat by donating to your local store today. premature ageing. Stress affects the way you think, feel and behave, impacting every area of your life at any age. Stress brings about imbalances in the body, such as high cortisol, glucose and insulin, and low growth hormones, and these may lead to unwanted responses in our bodies, potentially impairing the normal cell ageing processes. The good news is that these ageing mechanisms can be reversed. Hypnotherapy can help people manage their stress levels, using powerful techniques and strategies to enable you to deal with stress. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy utilises a modern research based combination of hypnosis and psychotherapy, promoting relaxation thus helping clients to make beneficial lifestyle changes. or advanced hair removal this is the new generation in long lasting hair removal. Energist VPL systems use short, safe, controlled pulses of light to remove unwanted hair quickly and effectively. Skin is exposed to a series of light pulses, flashing in rapid succession. The treatment is fast and can take as little as five minutes. Hairs treated will fall out naturally over a period of one to three weeks leaving your skin feeling smooth and looking silky. It is gentle enough to use on facial hair and can achieve amazing results all over the body. Due to the growth stages that all hair goes through, several treatments may be required to help prevent hair growth in the treatment area. Exercise of the Month A balancing act: avoiding lower back pain By Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out.

Y

our muscles are in a constant tug-of-war, with one set used to extend a bone or limb and another used to flex it. Doing many activities repetitively – whether playing a certain sport, training a certain way, or even slouching on a chair – can cause an imbalance. A common area of imbalance is around the hips and bum (glutes), with often the hip flexors being too tight and the hip extensors, glutes and hamstrings, being too weak, which has a negative effect on your posture by forcing your pelvis out of a neutral position and thereby causing lower back pain through stress on the muscles, ligaments and tendons. Stretching out tight muscles and strengthening weak muscles is a sensible prehabilitative and rehabilitative measure

to avoid issues. Gym equipment and machine placards can rather limit your view on what they can be used for, particularly in a small gym environment of less kit. Being a big advocate of variety in training, I’ll show you how a common item of gym equipment – a 45 Degree Hyper Extension, made for the purpose of Hyper-Extensions - can be repurposed for further exercises to help you strengthen your lower back, glutes and hamstrings, whilst stretching the opposing muscle groups. Reverse Hyper-Extension:

ets Corner

Ask the Vet Vet Shaun Taylor, from Vale Vets answers your questions

I H

’ve heard about animals suffering from heat stroke and am concerned about my cat in the warm weather. What signs should I be looking out for, and what can I do to help prevent it?

eat stroke can be a problem for pets like cats, dogs and even rabbits and is caused by their core body temperature becoming too high. Moulting helps keep them cooler in warm weather but it does not give the same level of control as removing clothing, as we do. Most animals will shelter from the sun if they get too hot but some will lie out in the sun for long periods. Make sure they have access to water, encourage them to drink and move into the shade. Animals can’t sweat, they regulate their body temperature by panting but in hot and humid weather it is ineffective and they are unable to cool down. Once an animal’s core temperature starts rising it will become dehydrated and their heart and other organs have to work harder to keep them functioning which can be fatal if not treated quickly. If your pet shows signs of heatstroke which can include: panting excessively, anxious behavior, salivating, rapid heart rate, collapse or convulsions, phone your vet immediately. Move the animal to a cooler area. Put them in a tepid bath or shower or use towels soaked in tepid water to cool them down. Use a fan and then once cooled slightly you can use cold water baths/towels. Animals lose heat through their ears so include these in the bath. Offer water little and often and continue cooling until their breathing starts to settle, even on the way to the vets. If you have a question you can submit it at our website www.valevets.co.uk Just click on the Ask the Vet icon on our front page.

Allotment Virgins Stroke survivor Lori Rowsell and her family have been sharing their experiences with Gordano Living readers since they were allocated an allotment at the Gertie Gale allotments in North Weston more than three years ago. Gordano Living makes a small donation to the Portishead stroke drop in centre each month in return for Lori’s contribution.

Month 40 How different this year is to 2013! This year, seeds were planted at the right time, had the benefit of my beautiful greenhouse (or ‘The Shed’ as Andy kindly calls it), plus some fabulous torrential downpours and lots of gloriously hot sunny days. Perfect conditions and the rewards have been plentiful. Hundreds of runner beans have already been picked along with French beans, onions, beetroot, carrots and a beautiful cabbage. A recent Sunday dinner included six of our veggies – although we were only allowed one pea each because they have not been so bountiful! As always there comes the question of how best to keep all this produce. The hot weather means it’s actually hard to find a cool, dark spot but putting it in the fridge often ends up with floppy beans and squidgy courgettes. Mother-in-law to the rescue! Lakeland does Stayfresh Longer bags which are “coated with a unique Japanese stone power formula” and …. amazingly they work! My only complaint is she’s been using them for years and didn’t tell me. So we’ve not been short of veg in the Rowsell household, nor have friends in Portishead, Clevedon, Nailsea, Poole and Solihull. Our veg is well travelled. And there are still loads more to come. Often the only thing lacking is inspiration as to what to do

with it all and for recipes to share with you. This month the inspiration came from my mate Laine – homemade coleslaw. The first one I’ve ever done and it was yummy. Definitely better than shop bought although it won’t keep for too long – which wasn’t really a problem, it disappeared very quickly. Enjoy!

hat a wonderful summer we have had! Nice warm weather and spells of uninterrupted sunshine! What else could we have wished for, perhaps the odd shower to help with the watering? It has enabled us to really enjoy our gardens this summer; as well as doing lots of work to get it looking great we have even been able to sit out well in to the warm evening reaping the benefits of hard work and lovely summer sun. September is generally a cooler, gustier month than August and the days are noticeably shorter. While there’s not as much to do in the ornamental garden at this time of the year, if you have a fruit or vegetable patch, you’ll be busy reaping the rewards of harvest. It’s also time to get out and start planting spring-flowering bulbs for next year. Make the most of the remaining warmth while you can!

Come to Brackenwood for inspirational ideas for the garden

Top jobs this month Divide herbaceous perennials Pick autumn raspberries Give evergreen hedges a final trim to make sure they are in shape for winter. Dig up remaining potatoes before slug damage spoils them Net ponds before leaf fall gets underway Keep up with watering of new plants, using rain or grey water if

possible Climbing roses can be pruned once they have finished flowering; side shoots from the main branches can be cut back to a couple of buds. Clean out cold frames and greenhouses so that they are ready for use in the autumn Plant spring flowering bulbs Collect seeds & beans for sowing next year Dig up strawberry runners and pot them up Protect autumn raspberries and blackberries with netting to protect them from birds Clear crops once they’ve finished and fork over If the weather becomes more autumnal you can now plant and move shrubs and trees without having to worry excessively about their survival and establishment. Shrubs planted now will get off to a flying start next spring, as they will have had all winter to settle in. Thoroughly soak any droughtstressed plants and shrubs, especially newly planted ones. As the weather becomes cooler and damper, the soil will better absorb and hold any extra water you give it. Powdery mildew can still be troublesome in warm, dry, Indian summer weather. Unless it is severe, it will probably clear up once the rains arrive

Is The Bubble About to Burst? By Paul Kingston of Clifton’s Estate Agents

Hand made at an affordable price. A complete service with that personal touch.

ROMAN BLINDS VENETIAN BLINDS VERTICAL BLINDS

T

he property market has been exploding since the beginning of the year with values in towns like Portishead increasing up to 30% above the prices achieved at the height of the last peek in August 2007. Those figures became unsustainable at that time as banks and building society’s realised the size of their negative equity and the whole thing collapsed virtually overnight. Now unlike in the early 2000s when the property market had steadily increased over a period of years, we find ourselves in the situation where figures rocketed to incredible figures within six months. While this has brought some real prosperity and a huge feel good factor to many, it has forced a lot of people out of the market as they can no longer afford to buy at the prices being achieved. This has caused a wave of increases in the rental market. So where will this all end? The rise in prices and recent changes to lending criteria which have increased the time it takes to complete a purchase have contributed to a slow in the market. We are seeing fewer properties come to market and for the first time in many months we are starting to see price reductions. I don’t see that the bubble is about to burst by any means, but what we do see is a bit of a plateau.

Some agents are still pushing the boundaries on prices in order to secure an instruction as their stock decreases, with few new properties coming to the market. My advice to sellers is it is still a good time to Local and National Removals sell, but be realistic with your price. It takes Portishead (01275) 848181 a nano second for us to believe our property has increased in value but we can be much Email: chris@redclifferemovals.co.uk more reluctant to accept a decreased. Avoid www.redclifferemovals.co.uk being greedy and you should still achieve a smooth sale.

Climashield Solutions Do you have a problem with water getting in through the walls of your property? Then help is at hand! Exciting and innovative products from Climashield have arrived in North Somerset and could save you money, protect your property and solve your damp problems. Clean’n’Seal, an independently owned Portishead business, is now able to offer property owners a range of Climashield Energy Efficient products to help conserve energy, save you money and stop water ingress, thus protecting your property from the elements. The coating will not change the property appearance and will protect the property from damp and structural damage caused by water ingress. Climashield coatings are water vapour permeable, allowing complete breathability of the property. The product performance has a lifespan of 15 years or more. Business

Tax Matters

Each month Ali Redwood of Tax Assist Accountants in Portishead answers some of your business and accountancy related questions.

Renting to family Q:

I’m renting one of my flats to my son for half the normal rent to allow him to save up for a deposit. Is there anything I should be aware of?

A:

If you let a property below the market rate, as opposed to providing it rent-free, you may deduct the expenses of that property up to the amount of rent received. If you’re claiming the 10 per cent

Wear and Tear Allowance, the relief is added to the other expenditure on the property and again it can therefore only be deducted up to the amount of the rents received. As a result, in either situation non-commercial lettings should not produce a loss for tax purposes. Any excess expenses cannot be set against profits from another rental property or carried forward to be used in a later year. If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact us at your local TaxAssist Accountants office on 01275 390596.
