Preferred contractor announced for skatepark at public meeting

T

here were two significant events in the history of the Nailsea Skatepark project last month. A public meeting was held, at which the preferred Skatepark contractor was announced and initial plans were shared. And the grand raffle draw was made for the project, with initial calculations from the organisers confirming that this raised around £1000. With more than £100,000 raised towards the project there were some very strong contenders for the Skatepark design, and after much deliberation and discussion with members of the team, Nailsea Town Council and North Somerset Council, the very experienced Wheelscape Skatepark builders were chosen, and they were tasked with confirming their initial plan designs. The brief was to ensure that there was a concrete park built with opportunities for beginners as well as those improving and space for the top riders to fully utilise the space. The brief also included disabled access to the park and this will be confirmed in phase two of the designs. At the open meeting, which was standing room only, at one of the rooms at Scotch Horn Centre, Wheelscape explained on the big screen their plans, the logic, and the final proposals. The room was full of Skatepark users and other key members of the town including Nailsea Town Council, North Somerset Council, teachers, members of the press, Nailsea Community Trust representatives as well as the NSP team and other interested parties. The feedback was very positive from all involved in the process, so now a small group will liaise directly with Wheelscape to tweak the plans following feedback, before the final park designs will be announced and the contract awarded by North Somerset Council. After 18 months of hard work this is a milestone for the project. One of the fundraisers that was launched in early December was the grand raffle and the draw was made at the Ring of Bells, Nailsea, with live

music provided by Lewis Clark and the Essentials. After a final flurry of tickets sold on the night organisers believe a significant amount of around £1000 was reached. Phil Williams, one of the core group members and organiser of the Nailsea community Skatepark festival, said: “These past two events make it all worthwhile. “We still have quite a bit of work to do to finalise plans to make sure the Park will be of a top class design that we can be proud of, for not just the town but the surrounding area, with the aim of ensuring the Park is completed in time for the Nailsea Community Skatepark festival and showcase on July 9, 2016. “Once the tender has been signed off with the revised plans we will be in a position to confirm the timescales. On behalf of the whole team I want to thank our community, individuals and grant funders and all those that have showed amazing faith in the team and have donated in so many ways.” As the team continue to try to maximise the amount raised. donations can still be added via Nailsea Town Council as well as online via www.goldengiving.com/wall/ nailsea-skatepark-project

New chairman elected for Nailsea Chamber of Trade

N

ailsea Chamber of Trade has a new chairman after solicitor Janet Hendey stepped down at the annual meeting of Nailsea Chamber of Trade and Commerce after four years at the helm. The position has been filled by Sharon Brown, owner of The Blue Room in The Sion,.... who was elected unopposed. Sharon said: “One of our goals for 2016 is promoting Nailsea as not only a good place to do business but also a good place to work and visit.” Accountant Neil Houghton agreed to continue as treasurer and for the meantime the position of secretary remains vacant. One of the first decisions for the New Year will be re-branding, from what was originally a group representing High Street traders to a name which would encompass all commercial people in the town. Nailsea Business was the favourite. The North Somerset Vets trusted by over 5,500 owners to look after their pets! Updating its social media site including an online directory of all retail, office and industrial businesses was also seen as a priority, while business lunches and monthly Wednesday early evening meetings would continue with the date of the next meeting to be decided. For Janet, her time as Chairman has come to an end and she will be retiring to Monmouth. The Ward & Co partner was presented with a bouquet and three framed postcards of abstract North Somerset views painted by Nailsea artist Pauline Bevan. Janet said the most dominant issue during her time in office was proposed ‘parking charges’ by the district council. She said: “Members joined together to provide a cohesive force to challenge North Somerset Council.” It involved writing protest letters, attending meetings and collecting names for a petition against any move to introduce parking fees in the town centre. This led to an informal group of traders, town councillors and town centre management working more closely together as Team Nailsea. Janet added: “The chamber needs change and a new direction and so it is timely that I resign now as I am moving away; I wish the new chair and all members every success and best wishes for the future.” For more information, contact Sharon by email at nailseachamber@gmail.com.

Community News Junior school reopens library

B

ackwell Junior School had a grand opening of its library – and were joined by author Christian Darkin. The library had not been used properly as a library for the last few years. It was originally placed in one of the other classrooms, then moved into the ICT room and has now found the correct space in the old building of the school. The improvements include up to date books in good condition, furniture replaced, larger bookshelves, books reorganised into accessible categories, and a brighter space with posters, children’s work and inspirational art work from Year 4 teacher Ellie Jenkins on the walls. Staff and children in the school have worked hard to create an effective reading space. LSA’s have spent time sorting and organising books and furniture to create a peaceful and modern library. Pupils will be able to have a designated time in the library each week where they can change class books, select books for home reading and enjoy reading in the cosy corner or even taking part in the activities set up in the library. Activities include: the ‘Have your say wall’ where children can write recommendations about a book they have read or add their artwork to the ‘Illustrators wall of fame’. The space has been designed to engage children in the library and allow children to ‘Read for Pleasure’. There will be weekly library clubs where children can use the library to relax and read as part of their playtime. New Literacy co-ordinator Rebecca Yardley

said: ““I’m pleased with the Library space we have created so far. We are hoping to improve it further over the next year by introducing an electronic system to register books, but for now it’s lovely to have the school library up and running for the children to enjoy again. “Our main focus for the opening of the library is creating a space for children to be inspired to read and for children to feel welcomed into a happy, bright and colourful environment where they can relax and enjoy reading and learning. “The activities and the excitement of having an author in to ‘officially open’ the Library created quite a buzz around school.” Mr Darkin gave a short talk in assembly and then carried out workshops in each class throughout the day, promoting the importance of reading and highlighting the excitement of writing and publishing your own books. Throughout the day children took part in reading activities which included finding out about an author, learning the skills of an illustrator and spending time in their new library. As part of the day the school also announced the winners of its ‘Reading for Pleasure’ competition. Children were asked ‘Why is reading so important?’ and could design a poster; write a song; poem; story or be as creative as they possibly could to show why reading is so important. The winners were awarded book vouchers to spend on their favourite books.

Christmas Street Fair to return in Nailsea

A

fter a break of five years, Nailsea is planning to bring back its street fair for 2016 bigger and better than ever before. At a meeting at Tesco Nailsea, the idea was kicked into play by an enthusiastic group of local people. The emphasis was on involving everyone from schools, youth groups including Scouts and Guides, businesses, churches and charities, so the name Nailsea Community Christmas Fair was borne. The chosen date and time is Friday, December 2, from 5-8.30pm. It is hoped that stalls and entertainment will run from The Glassmaker at Crown Glass shopping centre up Colliers Walk, through Somerset Square and all along the High Street ending at Tesco supermarket, which is planning to host its own three day craft fair to coincide with the festive Friday evening event. And suggestions from a town centre ice-skating rink to a parade of lanterns were discussed with people tasked with putting on their thinking caps and going away to investigate all of the possibilities. From arts & crafts to fairground stalls, it was muted the charge would be £10 for a community space and £20 for a commercial stand – with booking forms available soon. The last street fair in Nailsea was in 2011 but folded after fewer and fewer people got involved. But with Clevedon successfully resurrecting its annual St Nicholas Fair on Hill Road last December, Nailsea is following suit with its own seasonal street celebration. Tesco Nailsea community champion Debs Bear was chosen as chairman, Golden Valley Primary School deputy head teacher Jo Hopkinson as secretary and Aegon UK manager Clare Elswood as treasurer. Debs said: “We want to re-launch the Christmas street fair

with an even bigger emphasis on OUR community. Bigger and better than ever - we want everyone to join in and play a part.” For more information, email nailseacommunitychristmasfair@gmail.com.

Nailsea Air Cadets aiming to be the best

C

adets from 2467 (Nailsea) Squadron recently participated in a regional competition to find out who the best target shooting unit was in the area. The cadets, who undergo a significant amount of training just to take part, completed safety skills tests before the competition took place over the course of a day. Nailsea were close to winning the overall trophy, but late in the day saw a surge from a unit based in Westbury on Trym which denied Nailsea the overall win. However, Nailsea had two individual winners in Flight Sergeant Jake Parsons and Corporal Jonathan White, whilst Cadets Thomas Henderson and Catherine Wesbroom-Warr were runners up in their categories. Target shooting is just one of the

activities offered to young people in Nailsea alongside flying, gliding and adventure training to name just a few. The unit meets twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7-9.30pm.

If you are interested in joining, email 2467@aircadets.org for more information or pop into the unit on the playing fields off Greenfield Crescent, Nailsea, on one of the evenings above.

MADDIE HAS VISION FOR WRITING An optical advisor by day is set to unleash her other talent on the public – by releasing her first self-published debut novel. Madeleine Cook, 23, works at Lynne Fernandes Optometrists on Nailsea High Street and the local author has finally published Away with the Faeries – an idea that she came up with seven years ago. The fantasy adventure for teenagers and young adults tells the story of 16-year-old Sky Francis who ends up the owner of a mystical emerald necklace which draws her into a different world, of faeries, and is bound to its fate. Alongside Prince Christian Meldin, she sets off through unknown lands in hope of stopping a ruthless and embittered queen from taking over the Faerie Kingdom. It is good versus evil. Relationships are tested, disturbing truths revealed. Sky must find within her the strength to succeed, and Christian the strength to forgive. Maddie said: “Writing stories is something I’ve done since I was able to hold a pencil, but it wasn’t until I was fourteen or fifteen when I started reading properly and came to realise I shared the same passion as these writers, that I took it more seriously. “I came up with the initial idea for Away with the Faeries during my GCSEs, which feels a long time ago now. “Over the last few years I’ve worked on other projects, but it never went away. It was always niggling at the back of my mind, and so last year I decided to rewrite it, and self publish. I wanted to share this world I’d created over the past seven years.” Away with the Faeries is available through Amazon.co.uk, just search for the title or Madeleine Cook.

Their visit included a tour of the Palace of Westminster and they also sat in the public gallery of the House of Commons to see the Chancellor of the Exchequer speak at the Dispatch box. The pupils also took part in a workshop on how we vote in a general election, and North Somerset MP Liam Fox also spoke to the children about his job as an MP. He even posted a photograph of the visit on his Twitter account.

‘Tough as Nails’ to continue this year

F

ollowing last year’s success and requests to do it again, another ‘Tough as Nails’ event will take place on Saturday, July 23, at Nailsea and Backwell Rugby Club. Organised by Nailsea’s neighbourhood officers, outdoor fitness company Carpe Diem Boot Camp and Donna Jordon, the event is a charity assault course, supported by local businesses, with the aim of raising money for a good cause. Last year’s event attracted around 300 people, with 150 taking on challenges including a slippery slide, crawl pipes

and muddy water. Children were able to test themselves on a shorter course. This year there will be three groups 5-10, 11-15 and adults. Participants will receive a competitor T-shirt and medal for taking part, and there will also be some new obstacles, and prizes for the best fancy dress. Neighbourhood Sergeant Mark Raby said: “This year’s event is to help raise money for a youth shelter at Millennium Park. We are conscious that the youth of Nailsea need somewhere to sit and hangout in the park which is under cover.

“We want this to be another great community event like 2015. There will be a bouncy castle and food on sale and it will be followed by an after party at the Rugby Club.” If any local company would like to help sponsor some of the obstacles at the event, please contact PS Raby at Nailsea Police Station. All of the profit will go into helping raise money for a shelter. Entry is £10 for the children’s course and £17.50 for the adult’s course. For an entry form, email toughasnailsnailsea@gmail.com.

Backwell charity seeks cyclists for moonlit cycling challenge

L

ocal disability charity, Motivation, is looking for fundraisers to help support their projects for disabled people in Africa and Asia. The charity’s activities reached more than 20,000 people last year and they want to do even more in 2016. Motivation will turn 25 years old next month and has been operating out of Backwell since 1996. The charity’s Founder, David Constantine, had a message for their supporters in North Somerset: “We would like to thank our supporters in the local area for every penny donated, every cake sold, and every mile run or cycled over the last 25 years – Motivation would not be where we are today without your commitment and encouragement.” In their anniversary year, Motivation is asking local supporters to help raise money for their life-saving projects by joining their Bristol Nightrider cycling team. Bristol Nightrider is a 100km moonlit cycle ride, taking in some of the city’s most iconic sights. The event takes place on the night of the 25th June 2016 and over 300 cyclists are expected to take part. After several successful years in London, this unique cycling challenge is coming to Bristol for the first time and Motivation has places available for those who want to get involved and raise money for the charity’s work. If you would like to join Motivation’s team and support their 25th anniversary fundraising efforts, contact them at fundraising@motivation.org.uk or telephone Gemma on 01275 464012.

Lions help Macular Support Group

N

ailsea Lions have generously presented a cheque for £300 to the Backwell and Nailsea Macular Support Group. The donation was made possible by a highly successful barn dance organised by the Lions, where the music was provided by the local band Dave Francis and Fougere Fouge. In making the presentation, President of the Lions, Wendy Hasler, thanked Dave and the band for their generosity in helping make the event so successful. In thanking the Lions for their donation, the leader of the Group, Sheila Round, explained that the group offers counselling and help in understanding macular disease, and coming to terms with sight loss. It also provides information about obtaining treatment and other services, and advice on staying independent. In addition, the Group arranges numerous social events suitable for

people with deteriorating eyesight. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the biggest cause of sight loss in the UK, with over 600,000 people living with late stage AMD. The condition is most common in people over the age of 50, and it is estimated 1 in every 10 people over 65

he Rainbow Pre-School in Backwell, North Somerset, where young children learn through play and activities during term time, has extended its hours to 3pm every day at the request of parents. Children, aged from two years and six months up to four years old, take part in activities and learning at the pre-school, based in Backwell Youth Club building, Rodney Road, which is run by local women Elizabeth Braywood and Sandie Simms. Sandie Simms said: “We have opened from 9am to 3pm on Fridays for a long time and it has always been our most popular day. “Parents have been asking us to open until 3pm on other days and we are now pleased to be able to accommodate children for that extra time, which will give many parents more flexibility in when they are able to give their children the experience of pre-school. “It works particularly well for those with older children as they can now collect from us and then go straight to local schools to collect an older child. We are always listening to parents and trying to introduce a pre-school that helps them and their children. “We have a few spaces left from Mondays to Thursdays for new children, but Fridays are currently full.” Parents of pre-school age children are welcome to visit Rainbows and should call 07960 415222 or email rainbowpreschoolbackwell@gmail.com to make arrangements or discuss their children’s needs.

or many, a trip to The Curzon in Clevedon is the ultimate cinema experience. It is an experience that would not be possible, though, without the cinema’s band of volunteers. Numbering around 80 in total, with most doing front of house duties, the majority come from Clevedon but some travel from Nailsea, Portishead, and further afield to help out. And as life at the cinema becomes increasingly busy, with the variety of films shown increasing all the time, so has the workload and The Curzon is on the lookout for more people to join the team. John Bradbrook, 54, an engineer by day, has been volunteering for nine years. John said: “I love films and moved to Clevedon from Bristol and immediately fell in love with the place. It’s such an unusual building and you can almost feel the history of place when you are in it. I volunteered as I really wanted to help keep the Curzon going for the town.

Alice said: “I was looking at doing a voluntary role close to home and the Curzon is the place my friends and I would come. It looked like it could be really interesting and enjoyable. “For younger people it’s a great opportunity to have volunteering on your CV, it helps you to develop your skills and realise the person you want to be.” “Everyone you work with is great and

everyone works well together. Without the volunteers it wouldn’t be the same, and I think people do appreciate that kind of service. “It’s a very community based cinema and it’s great that people give up their time for it.” So, if you want to join this thriving community, contact info@curzon.org. uk for an application form.

“When I started I was just tearing tickets and saying hello to people as they came in but now I can run the bar too. “You can work to a level you’re comfortable with and do as little or as much volunteering as you want. “For me I think I’m giving comething back to Clevedon and it’s very enjoyable to meet so many people. It is a very rewarding job.” The main volunteering jobs on the night a film is being screened are ushering, front of house helpers, helping at the kiosk and running the bar. But there are lots of other exciting opportunities for volunteers behind the scenes that people don’t see. There is a maintenance/DIY team, archivists, marketing, photography and design and office help too. There are even a group of volunteers who play the historic Christie Organ a couple of times a week. The cinema would also like to get more young volunteers on board too. Twentyyear-old Alice Wheeler-Shaw, has been volunteering for a year and works behind the bar and also runs the social media side.

LIONS INSTALL SECOND PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR IN TOWN

C

levedon Lions Club has installed their second defibrillator in Clevedon – at Six Ways Post Office, 7 Bellevue Road, Clevedon. The fund raising campaign for the defibrillator was started by Sue and Bob Piggott, whose son Aaron died from heart problems last year. Money collected at his funeral was topped up by the Lions, so this machine is now available to the public and accessed when an

emergency 999 call is made to the Ambulance service. Wording on the defibrillator cabinet recognises that it has been donated in Aaron’s memory to try and save the lives of other local Clevedon people. The Lions have already installed a machine in Queens Square in the town and Clevedon now has five machines’ available 24/7 plus others that can be accessed when business premises are open.

BUDDING READERS RECEIVE FREE BOOKS

T

he Sainsbury’s store at Portishead has donated 150 books to children at local Primary Schools. The books, which are part of the classic Mog series by Judith Kerr, follow lovable but clumsy cat Mog on her adventures and are perfectly suited to capture the imagination and foster an early interest in reading. Paul Morrison, Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Portishead, said: “We are delighted to be giving these books to local Primary Schools. All profits from the sale of these books has gone to the charity Save the Children to improve child literacy and we hope that the children will enjoy Mog’s story.” The supermarket chain has also donated 100 books to the Play Department at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

ordano School pupil Inga Szmigiel has amazed judges with her performance skills on the violin at the latest North Somerset Concerto competition. The first round of the competition took place in November and saw entrants performing one movement of their chosen work unaccompanied. The most promising performers were then asked to return for the second round of the competition which took place just before Christmas. In the second round participants were asked to play two movements of their chosen work accompanied by the piano. Each performance was then judged by a panel, including one external judge. Inga who is currently in Year 10 is now preparing for the next stage of the competition, where she will perform Bruch’s second violin concerto (Violin Concerto Op.26) alongside a full orchestra. Jenny Heathcote, Inga’s violin teacher at Gordano School, said: “Inga has shown determination and tremendous discipline to master this challenging concerto, and I am absolutely delighted with her success to date.” When asked about her achievement, Inga said: “Allison Blundell was a huge support and amazing accompanist during the second round. I would like to thank my fantastic and dedicated violin teacher Mrs Heathcote for her unending patience and advice.” The final two winning performances will take place on Saturday, March 19 at All Saints Church,

It’s fair to say that Stagecoach provides more than a love of performing. Youngsters are given the freedom to embrace their creativity and express themselves as they learn new skills. Classes boost selfconfidence, creativity and curiosity and help youngsters build skills that last a lifetime. Emma Jones, 12, and her brother George, 10, are now Stagecoach regulars after initially attending a two week trial a couple of years ago. Their mum, Sarah Jones, said: “My children absolutely loved it. They came home after the first day and were full of chatter about the friends they’d made and the fun they’d had.” She added: “They learn so much more

than singing, dancing and drama. My son is naturally quite shy and I’ve seen his confidence levels soar, whereas my daughter is outgoing and has been able to channel her energy into performing.” Classes are small which means every child is given attention and allowed to realise their potential at their own pace. The teachers are trained performers with professional performing experience and are there to lead and support youngsters as they conquer fears and rise to new

challenges. North Somerset’s local Stagecoach schools are based at Birdwell Academy in Long Ashton and at Gordano School in Portishead. To find out more about the two week summer trial, call Heidi on 0117 953 2500 or visit http://www.stagecoach. co.uk/2-week-trial-offer. The classes run during school term time from April 22 to July 9. Find out more about Stagecoach at www.stagecoach.co.uk.

Jump into spring with classic Ray-Bans By Gerard Fernandes

A

s we head towards spring with lighter and hopefully brighter days, we’re turning our attention to sunglasses. At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists we’re lucky enough to be able to select our favourite pieces and react quickly to the latest trends to ensure we have something for everyone. And, our latest collection of Ray-Bans certainly hits the mark. Ray-Ban is one of the most recognisable and popular brands on the market. From its original Aviator and Wayfarer frame, to the latest Havana range with its modern twist, Ray-Ban really is a timeless classic. And, throughout March we’re running a special customer offer. Read on to find out more!

What makes Ray-Ban so good? Ray-Bans have been around for a long time. They were originally designed for the United States military fighter pilots in the 1930’s who reported that glare from the sun was giving them headaches and altitude sickness. Green lenses were introduced to cut out the glare without obscuring vision and Ray-Bans were born. Ray-Bans popularity is still huge - a testament to its quality, durability and product development – putting science and beauty at the forefront of its vision. Today, Ray-Ban Light Ray sunglass and prescription eyewear collection is made with a hypoallergenic, durable, flexible and incredibly lightweight titanium alloy, so they’re extremely comfortable. And, they come with three interchangeable lenses so you can personalise your look. There are even smaller Ray-Bans for kids and we’ve reduced the price, but don’t tell them!

March madness Buy any Ray-Bans with Crizal anti-reflection lenses or in fact any frames fitted with Crizal lenses and you’ll get 25% off a second pair.* Don’t miss this great offer. Pop into see us this month and we’ll help you find the perfect glasses to fit your style and vision. Or call us and book an appointment– 01275 854946.

Open day success Thank you to everyone who came to our first Tom Davies Bespoke eyewear open days in Nailsea recently. They were such a success we’ll be running more – so watch this space! *Terms & conditions apply. Ask in-store for details.

charity that has singing for older people at its heart is looking to reach out to hundreds of lonely isolated folk across England this year. The registered charity GoldenOldies was started in Bath eight years ago by Bath’s music man Grenville Jones to give older people a reason to get out, to be with other and, most importantly, to sing and to smile to the popular memory evoking tunes of the 50s onwards. There are now over 140 sessions across the West of England and South Wales and a team of 35 dedicated session leaders for the ‘Goldies’ session, as the charity has become fondly known. In North Somerset the leaders are Adele Hooper, Abby Rakes, Rachel Mason, Rachel Parry and Julie Lucas. Older people from across North Somerset who attend the Goldies Charity Sing and Smile daytime singing and activity sessions celebrated their Christmas with a party at Nailsea Methodist Church which also welcomed folk from Portishead, Nailsea, Weston, Clevedon and Pill. Grenville said: “Everyone had a fantastic time at the Christmas party as can be seen from our festive photographs. Goldies sessions have started back again across North Somerset for the New Year. The concert at Genting was made up of more than 6000 pupils and the one at the O2 saw around 8000 students take part. The girls had been rehearsing since September and performances included a variety of current pop songs, ‘World in Union’, a Madness medley and some traditional Gospel songs. They were spectacular events featuring performances from Urban Strides, Beatbox, Tom Billington and Laura Wright, who was the mezzo - soprano who sang at the rugby world cup. atering students from Weston College were invited to Bristol to assist Harvey Nichols’ head chef at an elegant evening of cocktails and canapés. First and second year BTEC Events & Hospitality students from the College helped Harvey Nichols’ head chef Louise McCrimmon to prepare food for guests to enjoy at the event – which was organised by the Chefs’ Forum. The Chefs’ Forum is a group of catering professionals that brings chefs together to network, enabling them to connect with training facilities and colleges. The students then went head-to-head against City of Bristol College catering students in a competition to prepare a chicken for sautéing. Weston College’s Ashley Pincombe and Jack Griffiths, both 19, won the competition and were rewarded with an invitation to spend a day in Harvey Nichols’ kitchen with Louise and a trip to the award-winning Walter Rose Butchers in Devizes. “It was a real pleasure to have these young people in the kitchen,” Louise said. “The team and I loved working with them. “They did a fantastic job and I am excited to see what they go on to do in the future!” Ashley thanked The Chefs’ Forum and the College for the opportunity, saying: “I had a wonderful time, it was a great experience.” Rebecca Lopez, Hospitality & Events Lecturer at the College, said: “Our students showcased their fantastic skills and professionalism in both front and back of house duties throughout the whole event. “They were a real credit to the College.”

Celebrate a new you this year by helping Jessie May

A

local charity is urging supporters to get 2016 off to a healthy start by signing up to charity challenges for the New Year. Jessie May, which cares for children with terminal illnesses in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, South Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, is asking people to join in with the ‘New Year, New You’ attitude and pledge support for its 2016 fundraising events. Charity challenges are a great way to get fit, stay motivated and help a worthwhile cause and fundraisers at the Kingswood-based charity have plenty in store for those who want to get involved. Fundraiser Helen Mackie said: “Training for charity events provides the perfect motivation for those who want to lose a few festive pounds and while losing pounds you might as well raise a few pounds for Jessie May along the way. “We are really encouraging our supporters and anyone new to us to sign up for one of our events this year as a way to tick off those resolutions but also make a difference to our

families. “Our event calendar kicks off with the Bath Half Marathon which is taking place on Sunday, March 13 and is a really popular and fun event. “Other events throughout the year include the Bristol 10k on Sunday, May 15, the annual Dragon Boat Race on Sunday, June 12, and the Bristol Half Marathon on Sunday, September 25. There’s also the possibility of a repeat of this year’s inaugural Bristol+Bath Marathon.” For more information on fundraising for Jessie May visit www.jessiemay. org.uk or contact Helen Mackie at helen.mackie@jessiemay.org.uk or 0117 9582174.

Postnatal Exercise By Matt Bembridge Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out. This month he offers advice on postnatal exercise.

F

ollowing childbirth, the general thinking is to wait 6+ weeks before starting up any form of exercise. Most Mum’s wait for their final postnatal check with their GP to have the official “nod” to start back. Many will wait even longer.

Come along and join our Friendly & Welcoming group Scotch Horn Leisure Centre MONDAY At 9.30am & 7.30pm Please call Nicola Tel: 07787 110244 WEDNESDAY At 5.30pm & 7.30pm THU THURSDAY At 5.30pm & 7.30pm Please call Chrissne Tel: 07917 190796

While there are a great many physical factors to consider...type of birth, tearing, infections, physical problems, general recovery...I’d suggest, it’s right for you to restart exercise when you are ready to do so... this may be within a couple of weeks, it may be in a few months. By starting exercise, I do not mean signing up for a High Intensity Interval Class or lifting heavy weights, not yet anyway. I simply mean easing into light mobility exercises to help hasten recovery, help toward rebalancing the body, and better able to deal with general baby duties, like getting off the sofa with baby in your arms, moving a car seat, lifting a pram, etc. Even within the first few days, the gentle contraction of pelvic floor

40

muscles and controlled movements around the hip joint should help strengthen up muscles stressed and strained in that area during pregnancy and labour. Always erring on the side-of-caution, performing light and controlled mobility patterns early on, such as an assisted squat (holding on to something) will help to engage the dominant thigh muscles as well as engaging deep stomach muscles and those of the pelvic floor. This movement should help to retrain your brain to lift low placed objects (baby or baby-related items) with good form and take some of the stress off your now dominant lower back, which has endured an awful lot. In the weeks following childbirth, Mum’s should also find early support in the form of Mum’s walking groups and/ or postnatal classes. These are as much about getting out and socialising with other Mum’s as they are about exercise. To read this article in full and a guest article from a Mum following her fitness journey after childbirth, please visit Matt’s free-onlineresource www.GymProfessor.com.

Hypnotherapy helps with the symptoms of Fibromyalgia

M

any of us won’t even be aware of the debilitating condition Fibromyalgia, let alone know how to effectively manage the symptoms. As part her own awareness raising campaign, local Hypnotherapist Rae Arundel is focusing on helping people understand more about how hypnotherapy can help individuals suffering from Fibromyalgia, which causes misery for those who suffer with it. So what is Fibromyalgia? The word itself is derived from pain (algia) coming from the muscles (my) and fibrous tissues (fibro) such as tendons and ligaments, but most people with Fibromyalgia also have other symptoms in addition to the pain, therefore, it is sometimes called Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS). It is a chronic (persistent) condition. Rae said: “Fibromyalgia affects a surprisingly high number of people - about one in 50 people develop Fibromyalgia at some stage. It is seven times more common in women than in men. “In most cases, it first develops between the ages of 25-55.There are many symptoms, but the main ones are pain felt in many areas of the body, and tiredness, but some people also develop other symptoms too. The severity of symptoms varies from person to person and pain can occur in any area of the body.” Many areas of the body are typically affected, with some people feeling the pain all over. The most painful areas are usually the neck and back, and the severity of the pain can vary from day to day. Things like stress, cold or activity can make the pain worse. After a night’s sleep, people may also feel quite stiff for a few hours and some areas of the body may also be quite tender. Tiredness (fatigue) is common, and is sometimes severe; for some people it is more distressing than the pain itself. It is also common to have a poor sleep pattern, with some people waking up feeling exhausted. Many people feel worse first thing

in the morning, but improve by the afternoon. Even a small amount of activity may cause the sufferer to feel very tired which may lead to poor concentration. Rae explained: “When we consider the kinds of symptoms associated with Fibromyalgia, Hypnotherapy can be really very helpful in dealing 䔀猀琀⸀ 猀椀渀挀攀 ㈀ ㄀㄀ with the effects of it - but many people aren’t aware of this. “Many sufferers attribute reduction in symptoms to Hypnotherapy, which helps alleviate or limit their pain symptoms and increase their energy and comfort level. “A study conducted by the National Institutes of Health in the USA showed that Fibromyalgia sufferers undergoing hypnotherapy reported 80% fewer pain symptoms than those who received no 㜀㔀㠀㐀  ㌀㔀㠀㜀㌀ hypnotherapy treatment, and also 眀眀眀⸀栀愀爀戀漀甀爀猀椀搀攀ⴀ栀礀瀀渀漀琀栀攀爀愀瀀礀⸀挀漀⸀甀欀 reported decreased muscle pain and 倀漀爀琀椀猀栀攀愀搀 愀渀搀 圀攀猀琀漀渀 猀甀瀀攀爀 䴀愀爀攀 morning fatigue and fewer sleep difficulties, which really helps them on a day to day basis. “This means less reliance on painkillers or just ‘putting for all the family up with it’. Dementia friendly libraries

P

eople living with dementia are being encouraged to share their memories in a new initiative launched by North Somerset Council’s Library Service. The ‘Memories Shared’ digital reminiscence project adds to the support that libraries in North Somerset offer to people living with dementia and their carers. This support includes all library staff now trained as Dementia Friends and Reading Well Books on Prescription collections in all libraries providing quality assured information about dementia. ‘Memories Shared’ is a reminiscence project where historic images of North Somerset from library collections have been digitised and stored on tablets. The photographs used are of towns and villages across the district taken between the 1930s and 1980s. The tablets are used with groups of

older people and those living with dementia to encourage discussions about memories and events from the past. The sessions also help older people to gain more confidence in using technology. So far library staff and volunteers have delivered more than 20 reminiscence sessions to groups in the community

and in libraries, including Age UK, the Stroke Association, care homes, memory cafes, lunch clubs and retirement groups. To find out more about arranging a ‘Memories Shared’ reminiscence session for your group, contact your local library or email libraries@nsomerset.gov.uk.

MONTH Continue to feed the birds TIP OF THE MONT Attract birds all year round with feeders and you’ll be rewarded with constant interest that children will enjoy too. Fat balls give birds energy at this time of year, and gets them in shape for the forthcoming breeding season. The best plants for attracting birds to your garden are those with berries, or seeds rich in oils or fats. Try teasels, sunflowers, echinacea and Viburnum opulus. And don’t forget to keep bird baths topped up with clean water. For more gardening advice, visit www.ellyswellies.co.uk.

himney sweeping is an old profession still using traditional rods and brushes but now with added technology for a clean and safe job. Squire Sweep ensures your property is cared for during the clean and a certificate is given at the end of sweeping. Burning fuels creates waste in the form of soot and gases so it is essential to have a clean, unblocked route for these waste products. Blocked flues create the potential for chimney fires and carbon monoxide to build up. Regularly swept chimneys, proper burning of fuels, ventilation and maintenance are essential for efficiency and safety. Woodburner stoves are very popular nowadays but many people burn unsuitable fuels such as unseasoned logs, damp wood and pine wood. This creates heavy deposits of soot and creosote and can block flues.

he 1935 Ford BB van, which features in the original legendary sitcom “Dad’s Army” as Corporal Jones’s van, has been given a new lease of life as the new Dad’s Army film is launched. A platoon of Dagenham-based Ford apprentices, under the command of Ford’s heritage vehicle technicians, have helped repair the running gear of Jack Jones’s famous van - in the same building at Dagenham that it would have left the plant, more than 80 years ago. The original Dad’s Army television series ran from 1968 to 1977, and “BUC 852”, the van’s registration, made its screen debut on 11th September 1969 in the first colour episode. In February it appeared in the big-screen version of Dad’s Army. The van, belonging to local butcher and home guardsman, Jack Jones, is known for its role as a support vehicle for the Walmington-on-Sea branch of the Home Guard. It is now owned by the Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk. Stuart Wright, from the Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford, said: “This vehicle has a special place in British entertainment history, and is enjoyed by the many visitors to the Dad’s Army museum. It’s fantastic to see the van operational again and we hope it will capture the imagination of the younger visitors less familiar with Dad’s Army, as well as triggering happy memories for the older generations.”

O

NEPOST, the UK’s leading provider of independent postal advice and management, has used Mini First Aid to run a two hour first aid course focussing on the health of children. A spokesperson for ONEPOST said: “As an employer with a workforce who have children and grandchildren, gifting your staff the opportunity to learn life saving baby and child first aid in their lunch break demonstrates your commitment to empowering workers with children. Mini First Aid was established in 2014 to offer two hour baby and child first aid classes to parents and carers. Living in the moment Each month Della Hudson of Hudson Accountants provides advice on helping you to get more out of your business.

L

iving in the moment is often used to encourage people to appreciate the good things in life by focussing on one thing at a time but it can also be a good way of working more efficiently. How often do you allow your work to be interrupted by ‘phone calls, emails or questions from colleagues? Your job may be one where a lot of what you do is helping people (clients, staff, boss) when they need it but it is more likely to be a mixture of this and solo tasks. So how can you manage those interruptions?

Appointments • Book an appointment in your diary to focus on a solid block of work. • Arrange for somebody else to take telephone messages and switch off your email notifications (use your out of office if you will be occupied for any length of time). • Go to another room if necessary so that you don’t get interruptions at your desk. If you can’t get away from your desk then a polite “do not disturb until x o’clock” sign might help. • Get your head down and do the work without further procrastination

I find this one very useful with tasks that I have been putting off for a while. I set my timer for

25 minutes during which time I work intensively. The next 5 minutes is “rest” or at least a break from the task. Then back to it for another 25 minutes. I can manage about 3 of these cycles before I need a longer break but it is a great way to make inroads into a single large task or a block of smaller ones.

Working from home If you, like many small business owners, work from home it can be tempting to work in your pyjamas. If this works for you then carry on but, for some, it is easier to concentrate if they’re dressed in work clothes. If you’re still struggling then there are some great serviced offices around which will help you to eliminate home distractions. I found that going for a run replaced the mental changeover time of a commute so that I could move from home/mummy mode into my professional persona without domestic distractions. Experiment with work clothes, rituals and location to find what helps you to concentrate most easily. I’d love to hear your tips for concentrating as everybody is different.

Other advice and networking You are welcome to come along and join with us and other local business owners at our Nailsea Money Matters event in our new offices on 11 May, http://mmnailsea3.eventbrite.co.uk. Details of other free events and webinars are available from www. hudsonaccountants.com.
