Prestigious award for local volunteer

P

upils at Golden Valley Primary School in Nailsea had a special visitor to the school recently. RNLI Education Volunteer Jon Yabsley was selected to receive a special award in recognition of his dedication and outstanding support to the charity. Instead of receiving the award along with other winners at a big ceremony, Jon chose to receive it at Golden Valley Primary School in Nailsea with some of the very children that he helps to keep safe on our coastline. Jon started volunteering in 2007 helping children learn to spot dangers and teach them to know what to do in an emergency situation. When asked about what he is most proud of, John he said: “I think it has to be when I started gathering other volunteers to help educate children in the wider area. ‘The local lifeboat station that was the Portishead & Bristol Lifeboat (now RNLI Portishead) started to get involved in the early years as well. We now have four teams who cover Bath, Somerset, Bristol and Gloucester. “It is so important to keep our community informed of the dangers that could arise whilst in the water, whether it is the sea, reservoirs and streams. You can have a lot of fun in the water, but to do it safely is important.” Jon received a huge round of applause from all the children and staff members in their morning assembly. After the children received their own certificates for their

hard work in the previous week, Head Teacher Mr Lynch, kindly handed over to RNLI Youth Education Manager Anthony Jones to present the award. Mr Lynch said: ‘It is a great privilege to have Jon receive his special award in our school. He is a regular visitor and his own children attended our school years ago so I understand this will mean a lot to him personally.” Anthony added: “Jon is held in extremely high esteem by the team he co-ordinates as well as the wider RNLI family. “His reputation and passion for educating the community precedes him and without question the work he carries out has kept thousands of young people safe in and around water over many years.” If you would like Jon or one of his team to come along and speak to your school or club, contact him on yabbo@btinternet.com.

Nailsea Schools Orchestral Extravaganza

T

alented instrumentalists from a number of local primary schools spent a day enhancing their musical skills in an orchestra workshop joined by Nailsea Schools able and talented musicians from Year 7 through to Year 13. The students were grouped in musical sections, including woodwind, strings, brass, keyboard and percussion, and they took over the music suite at Nailsea School to master three brand new pieces of music. During lunch time the older students treated the primaries to a selection of performances from their popular `Live Friday’ sessions. Led by teachers from Nailsea School and the North Somerset Music Service, all of the students finally joined for a full orchestra rehearsal before performing to an audience of parents and grandparents at the end of the day. A spokesperson for Nailsea School said: “The audience that came in to see the performance were very complimentary. “I think it was evident how much had been achieved with students learning three completely new pieces - the Wallace and Gromit theme, Pachelbel’s Cannon in D and Sleigh Ride - and being able to bring it all together at the end of the day to perform. “Year eights said at the beginning of the day they couldn’t believe they would be able to do it but they were really proud of their end performance.”

Salvation Army Carol Concert raises £636.

T

he annual Salvation Army Carol Concert, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Nailsea and Backwell, took place at the Nailsea Methodist Church in December. The concert has now been a feature of Nailsea Christmases for some 20 years and remains extremely popular with residents. Tickets were free but a free-will offering raised £636.84 for ‘Child Assist’, an initiative created by the local Rotarians. ‘Child Assist’ was set up to help and support disadvantaged youngsters in our local area. The Salvation Army gave their usual rousing performance and the congregation was blessed with a visit from Father Christmas who dispensed bonhomie and sweets throughout the hall. Huge thanks are due, once again, to the

School looking for two new Governors

A

Nailsea junior school is on the lookout for two people who are interested • in a rewarding locally based volunteering role. The Federation of Hannah More Infant and Grove Junior Schools is looking for two new Governors. The Governing Body helps to maintain and improve standards of education within the schools, sets their vision and strategic aims, agrees plans and policies, and makes creative use of resources. Whilst this could sound daunting, plenty of support and training is given and you won’t be thrown in at the deep end. The role would involve attending meetings, of which there will be around 10 a year. If you are interested in finding out more, visit www.hannahmoreandgrove. co.uk and contact the Chair of Governors, Ann Tonkin, via grove.jun@n-somerset.gov.uk.

Salvation Army Band, Choristers and Timbrells for their entertaining and indeed uplifting performance and the Rotary Club is looking forward to next year’s event.

Community News Children’s Hospice South West celebrates 25 years

I

n 2016 Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) will be celebrating 25 years since it was founded by Eddie Farwell and his late wife, Jill. CHSW helps and supports children and their families who are living with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions which mean that sadly they will not reach adulthood. It is the only provider in the South West of respite, end of life and bereavement care for these families in a hospice environment. CHSW has three children’s hospices covering the West Country; Little Bridge House in North Devon, Charlton Farm in North Somerset and Little Harbour in Cornwall. To commemorate its 25th Anniversary, CHSW is selling colourful limited edition, handcrafted steel butterflies. An installation of these beautiful butterflies will be displayed in the gardens of each of the hospices from April to September and then be packed up and posted out to purchasers in a special, commemorative box during October. To buy one, visit www.chsw.org.uk/25.

Eddie’s story ‘Since 1983, my late wife Jill and I had been the carers for our two life-limited children, Katie and Tom, who were diagnosed as suffering with a rare degenerative disorder, Mucopolysaccharide Disease Sanfillipo Type A, which meant they would die somewhere between the ages of 10-20. Whilst we did our best to maximise Kate and Tom’s short lives and their enjoyment of places and situations, it was a very isolating experience and indeed took a significant toll on us both physically and mentally. At that time we were made aware of the only Children’s Hospice in the world, Helen House, some five hours away in Oxford. Jill and I had finally found a place which, for three to four weeks a year, allowed us the only proper time off from our daily caring and domestic duties. These respite stays gave us precious opportunities to recharge our batteries as a couple, and to spend some quality time with our children without being burdened by tiredness. At the beginning of the decade, my late wife Jill and I were beginning to have a ‘crazy’ idea that we could play some part in establishing a children’s hospice which would cover the South West region, stretching from Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly up to South Gloucestershire. By the end of 1990 we had gathered a small band of friends in North Devon to form a committee and ultimately, we

applied for charitable status. Planning the building of Little Bridge House and meeting so many people who wanted to be part of the success of it was an incredibly exciting time and a most positive experience to be having, during what was essentially a period of very raw bereavement following Katie’s death. We were heading towards opening Little Bridge House in September 1995, but then came another bombshell; my wife Jill was diagnosed with breast cancer. Happily, Little Bridge House did open in September 1995 and Jill, restored to reasonable health, was able to resume her post of administrator. Little Bridge House very quickly became oversubscribed, which led to the demand of opening the charity’s second hospice Charlton Farm located just outside Bristol. Jill’s cancer returned in 2001. Gratefully, she was able to lead the Turf Cutting Ceremony at Charlton Farm in Spring 2004. Tragically, she died later that year. I gave up my work in order to fully commit to Children’s Hospice South West and I took over as CEO. We opened Charlton Farm in April 2007.

I, together with a few close friends, knew that a third hospice would be needed to ensure our ultimate goal-that no family in the South West should have to travel for more than an hour and a half to reach their nearest children’s hospice. With the incredible generosity and dedication of our supporters, Little Harbour opened in Cornwall December 2011. As I sit and reflect on the past, I am aware that Katie and Tom who had so little that this world values, not only inspired their parents, but also many thousands of people to create Children’s Hospice South West, which has helped and will continue to help, many hundreds of families across the South West. To this day, they are helping us all ‘to make the most of short and precious lives’. (Eddie Farwell)

Award for Nailsea blood donor

A

Nailsea blood donor has been presented with an award for making 100 donations, along with 33 other donors from the region. Gordon Bennett first gave blood in 1963 and has been a regular donor since. He was presented with his award by Tanya Saker, one the many grateful people whose life has been saved as a result of the generosity of donors like Gordon. Following complications after the birth of her baby son, Tanya spent six weeks in hospital and needed 23 units of blood products. In presenting the awards, Tanya gave a very personal, heartfelt thank you to the many blood donors who had help save her life. Gordon said that although donors never get to know where their blood goes and how it is used, it was nice to hear directly from someone whose life had been saved, as this made the donations all the more worthwhile and gave the award a special meaning. He added that giving blood is quick, easy and painless, and urged others to consider volunteering as new donors are always needed. Appointments to give blood can now be booked online and donors can get up and

go immediately their donation is finished, making the whole process quick and easy. To find out more about how to give blood in your area, visit www.blood.co.uk

Successful bag-packing event at Cadbury Garden Centre

T

he Rotary Club of Nailsea and Backwell, in association with the Inner Wheel Club of Nailsea and aided and abetted by the Nailsea Corps of Air Cadets, carried out a successful bag-pack and bucket collection at Cadbury Wyevale Garden Centre. The event was a fundraiser in favour of the Great Western Air Ambulance charity. In view of recent initiatives to charge for carrier bags, the packing part of the exercise turned out to be minimal but, as usual, local people came up trumps by donating in excess of ÂŁ1,000, an incredible result once more demonstrating the commitment and generosity of local people towards worthy local causes. Penny Smith, representing the Air Ambulance charity, was there throughout the day accompanied by the Air Ambulance mascot, Critical Care Bear. The Air Ambulance team fly seven days a week, 365 days a year and attend more than 100 incidents per month, making them one of the busiest air ambulances in the UK. The charity receive no funding from the Government or the National Lottery, which means they rely entirely on the generosity of the people they serve to continue operating. Redland High’s Christmas QEH Ambitions are out of this world performances shine

R

edland High School’s annual School Christmas Performance was this year, a double bill, starting with an adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women from the Year 6 and 7 students. Co-directed by Drama Teacher Mrs Armsby and Year 13 Drama Captain Molly Cheesley, the cast did a fantastic job of sharing this story about young girls on their journey into womanhood. The second performance was of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol with Emily Pearson shining as Dickens and Raisa Daya playing a convincingly miserly Scrooge. Year 12 pupil Maya Coleborn choreographed the piece and Music Captain Francesca Millar wrote original music. Redland girls - lead by Head of Drama Miss McCormack have an outstanding reputation when it comes to drama with the Senior School regularly taking shows to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Junior School taking part in the annual Shakespeare Schools Festival.

P

upils from QEH have won first place in the regional heat of the UK Space Design Competition, and will now compete in the national final for the chance to represent the UK at NASA. Held in Cardiff, the UK Space Design Competition is a science and engineering challenge designed as a simulation of life in industry. Teams are given a list of requirements for a space settlement, and have a day to come up with a detailed design which they present to a panel of judges who include experts in the field and representatives of the UK Space Agency. QEH was represented by Andreas Richardson, Chris Hyland, Toby Speirs, George Cherry, Rory Neville, Caleb Smith, Alex James, Philip Wakely-Skinnarland, Hamzah Ahmed, Dominic Drake and James Palmer. They worked solidly from 8am to 10pm to design all aspects of a space port. Their design was described as “intricate and technically brilliant”. Mr Stephen Holliday, Headmaster of the school, congratulated the students involved. “This competition requires complex, challenging and imaginative thinking, something which is very strong at QEH. We encourage our students to think outside the box, developing new ideas with exciting innovations and our students of today may well be the space researchers of tomorrow.” The national finals will be held in March 2016 at Imperial College London, with members of the winning team invited to the NASA Johnson Space Center for the international final.

In with the new A New Year means a new start and a clean slate. It’s a time of change, a time when we step back and assess things. After the excess of the festive period it is a time when many of us look to improve and rejuvenate ourselves for the year ahead. As always, a whole host of New Year’s resolutions will be made, the most common of which will be losing weight

and staying fit and healthy. With that in mind, we have put together a comprehensive New Year, New You guide to help you on your way, with features on everything from where and how to keep fit and exercise to where to go to help you start 2016 in a positive frame of mind and get rid of the winter blues.

Exercise of the Month: Stiff-Leg Deadlifts Every month top personal trainer Matt Bembridge, AKA Gym Professor, provides advice for those who work out. This month he talks you through stiff-leg deadlifts.

I

’ve long been an advocate of hip extension exercises, and them of being a proficient way of training the entire hamstrings cluster, as well as the lower back and glutes. An exercise called the Romanian Deadlift (RDL) is fashionable in gyms at the moment, but, being an old-school bodybuilder, I prefer to concentrate on a similar exercise called the Stiff-Leg Deadlift (SLDL). First, I must emphasise the word STIFF; your knees should have an ever-soslight kink and remain stiff in this position (locked-in), not straight. I feel that the stiff position is kinder on the knees and allows for better engagement of the hamstrings. Weight-wise, there’s confusion over variations of high-hips deadlifts (RDL, ADL, SLDL), with many working up to and around 75% of conventional deadlift load. This load is excessive for the SLDL and will often lead to individuals kicking their bum out (to offset the load), straighten their knees, and plantar flex their toes in to the ground (in an attempt to balance). Often, they’ll then feel this more in the calves and lower back. Maintaining a straight back and pulled back shoulders with a heavy weight is also taxing on the mid-traps. Personally, I like to drop the load significantly, say 20-30% compared to the conventional deadlift, and concentrate on engagement of the hamstrings throughout the exercise... pausing briefly at the mid-position, similar to correctly performing a hamstrings stretch (NB: do not bounce!). As an alternative to using a barbell, I sometimes perform StiffLeg Deadlifts with a kettlebell or dumbbell out in front of me, which means dropping your shoulders out slightly, but, before the form police comment, my shoulders are still locked-in and my back braced; at this lighter weight, my primary taxation is with my hamstrings throughout the exercise...this is where I want to feel it, and, my form is good for my aim of this lift and in relation to the weight being lifted. Feature

January at Lynne Fernandes By Gerard Fernandes Unlike many people, I enjoy January. I like the freshness that the New Year forces upon our plans for business, for family, for life.

third were daft: I’ve come to realise now that perhaps the directors were too daft to understand the daft ideas were some of the best!

Investing in the future

When is a Sale a Sale?

At Lynne Fernandes Optometrists, our team will be joining us for our 6 monthly away day on January 13th. We close all 3 practices for the day and decamp to a local restaurant. It’s a perfect size for our team of 20 and we’re looked after wonderfully with breakfast, lunch and a supply of coffee and cakes. We invest in this opportunity out of practice, to reinvigorate our teams. Everyone is encouraged to participate, to present to the group on an area of our business: from paperwork required for our Myopia Control clinic, through to the administration of our sight test contract with the NHS (unsurprisingly bureaucratic), to the protocols we expect our optometrists to follow for an emergency appointment. I have the pleasure of talking about our numbers, how the business is growing. Also, where we want to be, not just in sales, but in leading the way in clinical eye care. One of the most useful sessions is one titled “…If I was the boss I would/ wouldn’t…” Here our teams get to post their ideas anonymously: they all get discussed, and we show what we’ve done. I used to think that a third of the ideas were good, a third were possible, a

Everyone has a January Sale. We use ours to move stock that we’ve held too long, to clear brands we no longer wish to display, but we throw in some specials deals on products just to stimulate interest. We have to be brutal, so sometimes brands that I’ve chosen and love, but just don’t work in Nailsea are cleared. This year there will be one range of designer frames: hugely popular in London and Manchester that were my decision, but just haven’t worked. We need the space, so they have to go.

The Advanced Eye Exam After a “soft” launch, our Advanced Eye Exam is proving a very popular upgrade for those who want the very best in eye care. For the first time in Nailsea we are able to offer an examination with a new technique to look underneath the retina for the very first signs of eye disease.

What’s On January market

Curry night’s a winner at the Ring O’ Bells

T

here’s nothing like a good curry in my book. In fact a trip to the local Indian restaurant has become a recurring feature for me and my friends, and it is a common theme for most of us. So when I heard there was a curry night at the Ring O’ Bells pub, St Mary’s Grove, Nailsea, I was licking my lips. The curry night was hosted by Curry guru and author Dave Loyden and Ring O Bells landlord Dave Green and they both cooked up a treat. It was the second Undercover Curry Night at the pub and good news travelled fast as there were plenty of people there. For £9.95 you could have a number of helpings from delicious starters to freshly made curries, which included lamb dhansak, chicken madras, vegetable curry, and rice dishes. Dave Loydens learned his trade while working in an Aberdeen Indian kitchen and went undercover in the best Indian/Bangladeshi restaurants, posing as a delivery driver to try to learn those closely guarded secrets of the chefs. He now lives in North Somerset and has published a book entitled Undercover Curry which is available from Amazon. Having tasted his cooking his fame when it comes to authentic Indian cuisine is well deserved. But the best endorsement comes from my girlfriend Jo, who isn’t in to her curries but who thoroughly enjoyed the food and she has officially been converted.

Is your tree looking unwell or a bit off colour? By Bartlett Tree Experts

A

phids are one of the commonest and most troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and recently have been causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly referred to as greenfly or blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and spreading several varieties of virus, causing severe die back. The current troublesome aphid is the cypress aphid, which predominantly affects conifer hedging. The damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara Cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge, which leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. The cypress aphid causes damage to western red cedar, lawsons cypress, leylandii and monterey cypress. Control of aphids on woody and non-woody plants is easy, additionally good cultural techniques help to reduce exploding populations. Techniques that can be employed are ensuring that overwintering aphids do not survive during the winter, cleaning dead plant material and encouraging natural predators will also help. In terms of treatments the old horticultural practice of applying a winter oil wash to kill overwintering eggs and young insects is still a very sound practice. At the first sign of brown patches telephone Bartlett Tree Experts for a free consultation and professional advice on 01275 371000 or email bristol@ bartlettuk.com. Business

Growing your business through acquisition Each month Della Hudson of Hudson Accountants provides advice on helping you to get more out of your business.

W

ell, we’ve done it. After years of helping clients to buy businesses we’ve actually gone and bought one ourselves. On 30 November Hudson Accountants acquired Sarah Leighton Accountancy Services which now adds a bookkeeping arm to our existing accountancy and business advice services. Whether for us or our clients the process is, essentially, the same:

Why? Does this business enhance our existing offering with additional services, employees or geography? Are there synergies to be had by combining the two businesses into one? Can we save on administration, premises, IT systems etc? Are there opportunities to be had by combining both businesses? Can we cross sell existing products or services to give a better overall package? Do I/we have the capacity to absorb this new business without any negative impact on our existing business?

What is it worth to you? If you are purchasing assets and stock it is reasonably easy to put a price on these but is there also value in the goodwill, key staff, location etc which might be worth paying for? How much will the combined business be worth after you have taken advantage of synergies and growth opportunities? Once you know what the business is worth to you, you also know the maximum price that you are willing to pay for the new business.

Raising finance? This is a whole article in itself but, however you finance the deal, you will need to see when you will be repaying any loans and covering any interest charges. Don’t forget to include payment terms in your negotiation.

How systemised is the business? A highly systemised business (which, fortunately for us, bookkeeping services are) means that there is less knowledge locked in the head of the business owner so it is quicker and easier to arrange a handover. For us this was still an intensive and exhausting 6 week process of introductions and knowledge transfer.

Do you need to change your existing business? In our case we have reallocated work internally and are recruiting an additional member of staff as well as seeking larger premises in Nailsea (watch this space). This is a major upheaval which has affected our existing work and is only possible with the fantastic team that we have. You might want to change your way of working, incorporating the best of both businesses

You are welcome to come along and join with us and other local business owners at our Nailsea Money Matters event on 3 February. http://mmnailsea2.eventbrite.co.uk. Details of other free events and webinars are on our website at www.hudsonaccountants.com.
