LowCountry Women’s Specialists

Swimmer’s Teeth Due to the chemicals in pools, frequent swimmers may be at risk of forming yellowish-brown or dark brown stains on their teeth. These chemicals increase the pH of a person’s saliva, resulting in a breakdown of salivary proteins and forming deposits on teeth, called “swimmers’ calculus,” and most often form on the front teeth. These stains can often be removed by a professional dental cleaning and specialized fluoride treatments.

Scuba Teeth Scuba diving, on the other hand, can lead to jaw joint pain, gum tissue problems or “tooth squeeze” pain in the center of the tooth. These symptoms together can result in “diver’s mouth syndrome” (or barodontalgia). This condition is caused by the air pressure changing and divers biting too hard on their scuba air regulators. The best way to avoid these problems is to visit a dentist before scuba diving and make sure your dental health is tip-top. Ask your dentist about fitting the mouthpiece of an air regulator. Sometimes, dentures can be accidently swallowed during a dive, so denture wearers should also consult a dentist before diving to discuss and potential problems.

A HEALTH INSURANCE GUIDE FOR DUMMIES Types of Health Care: ❑ Health Maintenance Organization (HMO): an organization that provides or arranges managed care for health insurance, self-funded health care benefit plans, individuals, and other entities in the United States and acts as a liaison with health care providers (hospitals, doctors, etc.) on a prepaid basis ❑ Participating Provider Organization (PPO): a managed care organization of medical doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers who have agreed with an insurer or a third-party administrator to provide health care at reduced rates to the insurer's or administrator's clients ❑ Fee-for-service (FFS): a payment model where services are paid for as itemized in the hospitals invoice ❑ Catastrophic Insurance: provide an emergency safety net to protect you against unexpected medical costs

How much will you pay out of pocket, you ask? Your premium + Your deductible + Any coinsurance you must pay (up to your out-of-pocket maximum) + Any copayments = The most you will pay for healthcare per year (for covered services)

So what the heck does that mean? ❑ Deductible: amount you're responsible for paying for covered medical expenses before your health insurance plan begins to pay for covered medical expenses each year. ❑ Coinsurance: the shared costs between you and the health insurance plan. So you could pay 30% of costs and your plan pays 70%. These percentages differ from plan to plan; and some plans don’t include coinsurance. ❑ Out-of-pocket maximum: the most you will have to pay for covered medical expenses in a plan a year through deductible and coinsurance before your insurance plan begins to pay 100% of covered medical expenses. ❑ Copayment: payment you make every time you visit the doctor. These rates are usually fixed and don’t usually accumulate toward the deductible.

Picking the Right Plan for You Individual Insurance: Insurance plans purchased off the exchange (directly from provider) or through the Health Care Exchange or Health Insurance Marketplace (www.healthcare.gov) Group Insurance: Insurance provider through an employers. Employers may get better rates because they have a large number of people to cover. Short Term Coverage: Plans that are designed to provide specialized short-term coverage to fill in the gap of time between employers.

❑ Basic or comprehensive coverage

❑ Is your doctor and hospital covered by the plan

❑ No-cost nurse advice lines

❑ Urgent care center

❑ Emergency room visits

❑ Doctor’s office checkups

❑ Travel coverage

❑ Family coverage

❑ Works with a Health Savings Account

❑ Covers prescription drugs

Do you qualify for Medicaid? Medicaid provides health coverage to millions of Americans, including eligible low-income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and people with disabilities. Medicaid is administered by states, according to federal requirements.

YOU GO GRILL!

The classics - hamburgers, hot dogs, shish kebabs - are always a hit, so give them a personal flavor. Hamburgers Add almost anything to your burger mixture and leave it in the refrigerator for several hours to allow the flavors to mingle. Try adding:

❑ Fresh or dried herbs and spices

❑ Minced onion and garlic

❑ Blue cheese, goat cheese, gorgonzola, feta, cheddar or pepperjack

❑ Barbeque sauce, buffalor sauce, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, Hoisin sauce, plum sauce, oyster sauce, salsa or salad dressing

❑ Olives, diced chiles, crumbled bacon or minced ham

Hot Dogs It’s all about the toppings: ❑ French Onion Dog: Caramelized Onions and Gruyère Cheese ❑ BLAT: Wrapped in Bacon Topped with Chopped Lettuce and Diced Avocado and Tomato ❑ Banh Mi: Pickled Carrots, Cucumber, Jalapeño, Cilantro and Sriracha

Shish Kebabs Instead of bamboo or metal skewers, try one of these alternatives:

❑ Sugar Cane Swizzle Sticks w/ salmon or fruit

❑ Lemon Grass Stalks w/ shrimp or pork

❑ Rosemary Sprigs w/ chicken or beef

❑ Fennel Branches w/ sausage and peppers

❑ Vanilla Beans w/ grilled peaches or bananas

Beat the Heat Business Attire ❑ Wear light-colors to reflect heat. ❑ Stick to natural fibers like linen and cotton. ❑ Check out cropped-pant suits. ❑ Keep a jacket or cardigan handy for air conditioned offices. ❑ Wear a tunic and dress it up or down. ❑ Opt for skirts instead of slacks to allow air to circulate. ❑ Try out simple yet stylish up-dos: a chignon, French twist, French braid, bun, etc. ❑ Carry blotting papers and powder face frequently. ❑ Wear light makeup to prevent the runny, blotchy look that heat can cause. ❑ Try a lighter fragrance; heavy perfumes tend to cloy in the heat.

Mosquito Free Naturally • According to the CDC, oil of lemon eucalyptus is as effective as DEET for up to 6 hours after application. Look for a storebought option or make your own by diluting 10 – 20 drops of pure oil of lemon eucalyptus by mixing it into your favorite moisturizing lotion or sunscreen or filling a small spritz bottle with 10 – 20 drops of the oil and witch hazel. Be sure to test on a small area of your skin to make sure it is compatible with your chemistry and to wash off skin when you come indoors. • Incorporate mosquito repelling plants – Citronella, Lemon Eucalyptus, Cinnamon, Castor and Rosemary – into your landscape. • Get rid of stagnant water near your home and make sure your grass and shrubbery stay trimmed.

Wedding Cake Traditions • Wedding guests in the Middle Ages brought cakes and stacked them on top of each other. If the stack stayed upright when the bride and groom kissed over the stack, it was considered an extra good luck omen. This is most likely where the bride-and-groom-topped wedding cake originated. • In the 19th century, the wedding cake was multi-purposed – the bottom tier was for the wedding reception, the middle tier was given away, and the top was saved for the christening of the couple’s first child, which was expected soon to follow the wedding day. That tradition continues today when newlyweds save the top tier of their cake to enjoy on their first anniversary.

Sweet 185

The veil was originally worn by Roman brides. It was thought that it would disguise the bride and therefore outwit malevolent spirits. Ancient Roman brides wore bunches of herbs under their veils as symbols of fidelity. Types of Veils ❑ Mantilla: Tulle with lace at its hem; draped over the entire head ❑ Blusher: A short veil that covers the bride’s face; usually does not extend past a bride’s chin ❑ Flyaway: Stiff, short veil ❑ Ballerina: Straight, tulle veil that does not extend past the ankle ❑ Cathedral: Very full veil; its length can be measured in feet ❑ Elbow: Full, tulle veil that extends to the elbows The Right Fit ❑ When selecting a wedding veil, consider your height, and the details and length of your dress. ❑ If under 5’4”, an elbow-length veil is ideal. ❑ Those over 5’7” should consider a veil that reaches to the fingertips. ❑ And for those brides who fall in between, either style will work. Veil Alternatives ❑ Flowers ❑ Feathers ❑ Antique clip or brooch ❑ Hat or Fascinator
