Have you wanted to find a space of your own to work, create, meditate and relax? We visited busy woman Deona Smith, founder of Sister Summit, at her “she shed” for inspiration on how to make it happen. Having grown up in Awendaw, Deona moved back to the Lowcountry in 2008 from Washington DC where she had attended college and worked for many years in the corporate world. With a new baby and aging parents, the timing was right to settle back into the area that has been home to her family for generations and she moved into her childhood home. Deona launched her business publishing a magazine and founding Sister Summit, an organization that promotes personal and professional development through a series of events across the country celebrating, empowering and connecting women of color. When the Shem Creek building the business was headquartered in was sold, the seeds of inspiration were planted for creating a space for herself close to home. In the lush garden behind her family home, she had a contractor build out an existing carport to become a work and storage area while she was looking for a new space. Working steps from home proved so beneficial - no commute, no extra expenses and childcare on site - that she built onto her existing space to create Sister Summit headquarters and better still, a space just for Deona. She purchased a pre-built shed that was already wired and moved it on site via a trailer. Her contractor connected the new building to the existing structure, adding flooring and sheetrock and wiring it to the existing breaker box. The She Shed now has an office area with two workstations and storage, and a living room area with a desk, comfortable seating and a television. With Deona’s sophisticated decor sensibility, the space has comfortable, calming energy. What started as an office has now become much more, it’s a space for Deona that is just for her.
