Woodinville resident Judy West is talking about Dr. Glen Stuhring of the EvergreenHealth Primary Care Center in Woodinville, who’s been her family’s doctor for four generations.

Dr. Stuhring’s care began with Judy’s mother back in 1985. “Mom was 83 years old and living in Woodinville.

Dr. Stuhring was seeing patients in a little modular building—like a trailer—just a few blocks from the location of his current clinic,” she recalls. “Mom had cancer, and she trusted her care completely to Dr. Stuhring.”

He also treated Judy for a health issue while she was visiting her mother. When she and her husband, Paul, later moved to Woodinville, there was no question who would be their family doctor. Since then, Dr. Stuhring has cared for the Wests’ three daughters and their husbands, and the couple’s six grandchildren.

What’s the secret of Dr. Stuhring’s relationship with his patients?

“I try to imagine it’s my brother walking in, or my mother or grandmother,” Dr. Stuhring explains.

“I would want the doctor to give them the best of his time and quality of care, so that’s what I try to do.”

throats,” Dr. Esser notes, “you don’t have someone reviewing the chart and noticing that it’s time for a mammogram or a vaccination, or that your blood pressure has been up the last four visits.”

Another good reason to have a PCP is continuity of care. “A PCP can handle many health problems at once,” explains Dr. James Bhaskar of Totem Lake Family Medicine in Kirkland, who daily sees a wide range of medical issues, from the very simple to the complex. “We’re able to facilitate the next level of care when it’s needed.”

COORDINATION AND COLLABORATION As a primary care provider, or PCP, Dr. Stuhring focuses on treating the whole patient, and is a constant in the care that his patients receive.

Like other PCPs in the community, he plays a vital role both in their wellness and in their well-being.

“It’s an incredibly important piece of healthcare,” says primary care physician Dr. Sally Esser of the Lakeshore Clinic in Bothell. “Knowing my patients over time allows me to personalize their care, allows them to realize I know their background and family, and ultimately makes being well easier.”

That “being well” goes beyond simply identifying and treating common medical conditions. Because you are seeing one primary care physician on a regular basis, that PCP plays a critical role in the preventive care that can help you avoid problems down the road. “If you are only going to urgent care or random providers for ankle sprains or sore

But Dr. Bhaskar and other PCPs do more than just make referrals; they coordinate the care when a patient sees several different specialists, and keep track of what is going on. That’s when having a PCP can really be invaluable, says Shao-Ti Meredith, an ARNP (advanced registered nurse practitioner) at the EvergreenHealth Primary Care Center in Redmond. “Because we know their background, their personalities and their medical conditions, we can refer people to the right specialists—for them.”

As an ARNP, Meredith is yet another option for primary care. “The level of care is the same,” she stresses. The biggest difference is that ARNPs aren’t able to admit patients to hospitals. But if a hospital admission is needed, the MDs with whom Meredith works closely at the Redmond clinic are just a few steps away from being able to help.

That kind of collaboration is vital to providing all patients with the best possible care across the board.

Dr. Barbara Schach is a specialist in internal medicine at Eastside Internal Medicine in Kirkland, where she is a primary care provider to 1,500 people, including multigenerational families spanning teens to grandparents. “When faced with a particularly challenging case,” she acknowledges, “I really appreciate that I can consult with any of our practice’s four other board-certified physicians.”

Dr. Schach says being affiliated with EvergreenHealth is a huge plus, too. “My family and I have used its preventive services, emergency department and end-of-life hospice care,” she shares. “Its exceptional care is why I continue to send my patients there, too, when necessary.”

And “trust” is why Dr. Sally Esser has one patient who comes from Montana four times a year to see her. It’s proof, she says, that the bond with a primary care provider goes deep.

Exceptional care, of course, is the bottom line.

But a good primary care provider is often more than just someone who diagnoses and treats medical issues. There’s also an irreplaceable level of trust that’s built up over time.

ARNP Shao-Ti Meredith says that trust allows her patients to discuss their most private concerns with her and to have input into treatment plans and options. “It’s not just a one-way discussion,” she says,

It took my breath away.”

Carol Tranfaglia was a big believer in preventive care—even before it saved her life.

Every year since turning 40, Carol would get her annual screening mammogram at the EvergreenHealth Breast Health Center. Last year, her exam was done on the center’s brand-new 3-D mammography unit—which detected a very aggressive form of breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stage.

“I work at a biotech company involved in cancer research,” Carol says, “but the word ‘cancer’ had never been applied to me. It took my breath away.”

Suddenly, Carol had another job—fighting for her life. “The funny thing is, I never really thought my life was threatened,” she recalls. “Once I got all of the information, I really understood the value of 3-D mammography—it caught my cancer early.”

EARLY DETECTION = BETTER CHANCE FOR SURVIVAL “We can’t prevent cancer, but if we can find it early, there’s a better chance for survival,” explains Dr. Kara Carlson, radiologist and medical director of the EvergreenHealth Breast Health Center.

“That’s why we felt it was important to add the new 3-D mammography to our diagnostic technology.”

The scan is no different for the patient from the usual 2-D mammogram, but it results in an image that’s more like a CT scan and that allows radiologists to view the breast in 1-millimeter “slices.” It’s this detail that can reveal cancers that may not be seen on 2-D mammograms.

The technology is already paying big dividends for EvergreenHealth patients. “Since we started using our 3-D mammography units, we have found 44 cancers that would only have been found using the 3-D,” Dr. Carlson reports. The center also saw a 31 percent drop in recall rates because the 3-D images are so precise.

BRINGING 3-D MAMMOGRAPHY TO YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD “We always strive to do what’s best for the patient,” she adds. “That’s why we’ve always been a leader in adopting new diagnostic technology.” In fact, because of EvergreenHealth’s advanced methods and technology, 70 percent of cancer patients are diagnosed in the early stages, compared to just over half nationally.

With the success of its first 3-D mammography unit, the Breast Health Center has added two more 3-D units, including one in the mobile mammography coach.

From the moment of her diagnosis, Carol Tranfaglia had dozens of questions about what would happen next—and the staff at EvergreenHealth was there to help her.

It really helped the healing process and made me feel like I was going to be whole again.”

Because the 3-D mammography caught her cancer early, before it spread to her lymph nodes, Carol did not need chemotherapy. “I had a lumpectomy and seven weeks of radiation therapy, which is not insignificant, of course,” she says, “but not having to go through chemotherapy, for me, made a big difference.”

For that, Carol is grateful to EvergreenHealth’s ever-advancing technology and hopes others who read her story will take advantage of it.

“We’re so fortunate that EvergreenHealth has this lifesaving technology available,” she stresses.

Image-Guided Injections for Pain Relief Two years ago, Jen Larsen was at a crossroads. The pain in her hips made it difficult to keep up with her three active teenagers. She was gaining weight because she wasn’t physically able to do anything.

Jen had tried over-the-counter medications, physical therapy and even acupuncture, but neither the pain nor her mobility improved.

Her primary care physician, Dr. Deborah Nalty with the Providence Medical Group Monroe Clinic, referred Jen to Dr. Yung Lee at EvergreenHealth Sport & Spine Care. Dr. Lee is a physical medicine rehabilitation specialist who uses nonsurgical treatments to keep people with a variety of musculoskeletal and neurological illnesses active and functional.

A GREATER CHANCE OF SUCCESS “We tailor treatment based on each individual’s goals,” Dr. Lee explains. “That might be physical therapy, use of braces or even injection treatments when needed. If that doesn’t bring relief, we can refer patients for surgical remedies.”

Dr. Lee performed a series of tests and imaging studies on Jen Larsen that showed hip arthritis in both of her hips. That would make her a candidate for hip replacement surgery, but since Jen was only 42 years old, having the surgery now meant she’d possibly need to go through the process again in another 15 to 20 years.

“Since Jen’s a relatively young person,” Dr. Lee says, “our goal was to relieve her pain so she can delay the hip replacement surgery until later in life.”

BREAKTHROUGH TREATMENT FOR PAIN

Together, they settled on a series of cortisone injections using a new procedure that allows Dr. Lee to accurately deliver the medication to the exact spot where it will do the most good.

Dr. Lee uses ultrasound to guide the needle—and he is one of the few physicians in the nation to offer this innovative approach. “Ultrasound-guided injections are relatively new in the United States,” he explains, “and there aren’t that many physicians who are trained to do them.”

The advantage is as clear as the picture on the ultrasound. “If you don’t use image guidance,” Dr. Lee continues, “your miss rate is very high— as high as 50 to 60 percent. We have a much greater chance of success when we can actually see where we’re going. Even a few millimeters one way or the other can make a huge difference in how effective the treatment is.”

KEEPING HER ACTIVE AND FUNCTIONAL Getting the medication into the precise location has made all the difference for Jen Larsen. Now 44 years old, Jen has been receiving the ultrasound-guided injections twice a year. “The injections are managing my pain and letting me go about living my life,” she says enthusiastically. “I’ve even joined the YMCA because I’m getting married in December and I want to look good!”

And, perhaps most importantly, the ultrasoundguided injections are buying her time. “They aren’t a cure,” Dr. Lee admits, “but they keep her active and functional. And they’re allowing us to hold off hip replacement surgery until later, when there may be advancements in hip treatments that could be very helpful to her.”

Ask 10 different women to describe the ideal way to deliver a baby, and you’re likely to hear 10 different scenarios. But no matter the path taken during labor and delivery, the desired outcome remains the same: a healthy birth. Every day, the obstetricians and midwives in EvergreenHealth’s Family Maternity Center help women deliver on this outcome and, along the way, write their own stories of choice and success.

Childbirth with Choices

For Bellevue resident Kristin Olson, 30, delivering her first baby at EvergreenHealth seemed natural.

“My OB, Dr. Dawn Russell, had come very highly recommended by several girlfriends,” Kristin recalls.

“I’d also heard good things about EvergreenHealth and their advocacy for natural birth and breastfeeding, which was important to my husband and me.”

Kristin had come to a place where mothers, babies and choices are celebrated. For nine years running, EvergreenHealth has been awarded a 5-Star rating for maternity care from industry expert HealthGrades. Additionally, EvergreenHealth’s recently launched hospital-based midwifery service offers patients another option for a low-intervention experience in a safe and welcoming environment.

Having a birth with an OB doesn’t mean patients are without choices, however. “I think most EvergreenHealth OBs adhere to the thought that birth is a natural phenomenon, not a medical intervention, and are very supportive of birth choices,” Dr. Russell explains. “I really feel it’s

YOUR CHILDBIRTH—YOUR CHOICES a patient’s choice, and we’re there not to intervene unless there’s an issue of keeping mom or baby safe.”

Initially, Kristin had desired a completely drug-free birth, in adherence to the Bradley Method of natural childbirth that she and her husband had studied in the weeks leading up to her due date. But at two weeks overdue, Kristin was induced, using the drug Pitocin. “After that, my goal for natural childbirth shifted to laboring without pain meds,” she says.

Dr. Russell believes a key to Kristin’s success was her flexibility. “I ask patients to have birth preferences— things they would like to have happen,” she says.

“Our primary goal is a healthy outcome, and it helps to be flexible. In Kristin’s case, her plan changed when we had to induce her. But the outcome—a healthy birth—remained the same.”

Kristin also remembers the flexibility and support of the Family Maternity Center staff. “I give the nurses a great deal of credit for reading my birth plan and adhering to it,” she shares. “I put in a request for nurses who were familiar and comfortable with the Bradley Method, and both our day- and night-shift nurses were great.”

“It’s pretty awesome.”

Through it all, Kristin Olson and her husband appreciated EvergreenHealth’s collaborative spirit.

“After baby Davis was born, my natural inclination was to hold him right away to my chest to see that he tried to nurse,” Kristin says. “It was great to be in a place that allowed that immediate contact.

It made the 15 hours of labor totally worth it.”

“Everyone was really, really a team,” Kristin says.

“Dr. Russell, our doula, the nurses. It’s amazing, what kind of bonding happens when a baby is born.

It’s pretty awesome.”

Fashion for a Cause Supports Breast Health The inaugural Fashion for a Cause fashion show took place September 5, at Neiman Marcus at The Shops at The Bravern.

All proceeds will support EvergreenHealth’s Breast Health Care.

More than 100 guests attended the event, which featured an exclusive Fashion’s Night Out preview runway show highlighting some of the fall’s hottest trends. Guests also enjoyed a special VIP cocktail event in Neiman Marcus’ Mariposa restaurant, along with fashion experts, trunk shows and live music.

Hors d’oeuvres and desserts were provided by Lisa Dupar Catering, and wines were provided by Baer Winery, Guardian Cellars and Matthews Estate.

Get Your Rear in Gear EvergreenHealth Foundation is a proud sponsor of the second annual Get Your Rear in Gear Seattle Area 5K Run/ Walk to raise money and awareness for colon cancer.

The event takes place on Sunday, November 4, at King County’s Marymoor Park in Redmond. The race begins at 8:30 a.m., followed by family activities, and food and beverage sampling.

Proceeds will benefit EvergreenHealth’s Cancer Services and the Colon Cancer Coalition. Last year, more than $17,000 was raised to promote awareness of colon cancer in our community.

the Campaign for EvergreenHealth The 2012 Campaign for EvergreenHealth takes place October 15-26. This annual staff, physician and volunteer giving campaign is an opportunity for all members of the EvergreenHealth family to support the mission of EvergreenHealth with their own philanthropic contributions.

The Michael and Mary Kay Hallman Education and Resource Center Michael and Mary Kay Hallman have added the Halvorson Cancer Center at EvergreenHealth to their long list of significant donations. “Some gifts in a campaign become transformational,” states Robert Malte, CEO of EvergreenHealth.

“The Hallman donation is one of those gifts.”

When the Hallmans moved to Redmond with their daughters in 1987, they felt as though they had finally come home. They had previously moved often, and both looked forward to serving their new community in meaningful ways.

They are surely meeting their goal to serve, from funding local community programs to serving on boards at schools and universities, Hopelink and the Museum of Flight, among others. Now they add a naming gift at EvergreenHealth. The Michael and Mary Kay Hallman Education and Resource Center, situated at the heart of the Halvorson Cancer Center, will provide space for patient and family support groups, general classroom space with remote videoconferencing capabilities, and the Boeing Community Fund demonstration kitchen for patients and their families.

“Michael and Mary Kay’s generosity will be appreciated by hundreds of present and future cancer patients,” Malte continues. “Together with their fellow donors, the Hallmans are creating exceptional physical space to complement a cancer program with exceptional outcomes.”

Michael and Mary Kay Hallman have made service to others a “habit of the heart,” and have done so with passion, enthusiasm and humility.
