Greetings once again!!!.....It is a fact, and we have experienced that fact, that what we have just come through was a rather peculiar winter session. So I decided to check with those that record those facts to see what kind of records were broken.

The answers I got were rather surprising. It went this way....snow, more snow and even more snow but no record.....cold, even colder and even colder yet, but no record. So there you have it.....all those prolonged periods of too much snow and too much cold weather and nothing to show for it. I'm just glad it's hopefully all over and we can get back to the lifestyle we expect and prefer in this wonderland of ours. I know one thing for sure....I didn't really enjoy the experience and I don't imagine you did either.

It has been rumored that Evergreen Second Stage Players recent production of "Oh Nurse" was "Oh So Good'. Our very own playwright Betty Annand and our own director Val Parmley put together a great comedy for your enjoyment and are to be congratulated on it's success. And kudos to all of those fine actors from within our membership that played their parts so well. Also on the menu in March was "A Wee Taste Of Ireland" afternoon. Along with an Irish Stew luncheon those that attended experienced some superb Irish tunes by Mary Murphy.....all in all a great afternoon. And to top that off we had a great St Patrick's Friday Night Dance with over 70 people out to dance to the music of The Amigos.

Next up is our Evergreen Pancake Breakfast on Saturday April 1st. It's in the Conference Hall between 7:30am and 11am and at five bucks a person it is the best deal in town. Pack up the grandkids and bring them all down for breakfast.

Also want to let you know that the Evergreen Tax Volunteers will be on duty through to May 2nd on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1 pm to 4 pm. Location is the Computer Room. We want to thank our Tax Volunteers Bill, Diane, Guy and Mike for their volunteer time and also the greeters who are giving their time.

You also might notice that a number of new lunch specials are being offered from our kitchen. We have a great crew manning the kitchen these days and we want to thank the many new volunteers that have come forward for kitchen duty. And as always, our Volunteer Coordinator Deanne is always looking for new volunteers.

If you have an interest or just want to find a new one, please talk to Deanne.

Still no word on the AGM and the governance news. We await further updates.

Cover Photos The Camera Club encourages members to expand their horizons as well as show off their work by holding an internal competition every two months. We have a set subject, albeit usually one with many interpre tations. We each select five images from those submitted and the nine with the most votes are then displayed in the cafeteria for a month. All those visiting the centre are able to vote for their favourite.

The theme showcasesd in this newsletter is Feathers. The 1st place and 2nd place winners are used for The Evergreen Club’s newsletter front page.

EVERGREEN CLUB NEWS A NOTE FROM JANET As I thought about what to write this month I found myself thinking about National Volunteer Appreciation Week in April. Many organizations plan their volunteer thank you events for April which has also been the tradition here at the Evergreen Club. When I started here last August I learned from Deanne that the 2016 volunteer luncheon had not been held. Deanne and I were determined to host a thank you for volunteers in 2016 and the result was the tea held in December. We are now tossing around ideas to show volunteer appreciation in 2017 and have a few ideas up our sleeve! It won’t be this month but we are looking forward to hosting an Evergreen Club volunteer event later this year.

However, I cannot let April come and go without saying thank you to our Evergreen Club volunteers. In composing this article I looked up quotes about volunteerism, but found them too cliché. I looked for a volunteer cartoon to add a bit of humour, but that was not quite right either.

I decided what I really needed to do was to just say what is in my heart. My days are full of interactions with the many people who contribute to the success of the Evergreen Club. People who volunteer their time, skills, ideas, and passion to support the operations, special events, clubs and food services for the Evergreen Club. Their contributions, leadership, collaborative attitudes and patience ensure the club continues to be a great success and an important place for people to gather. Thank you volunteers for being a part of the Evergreen community. Thank you for being involved. An organization like this is strong because of the people who give their time.

I am honoured to be part of your team and to work with you all.

Favorite Annual Events Return in April and May Bring your friends and family on Saturday April 1st for the Evergreen Club’s popular Pancake Breakfast.

A volunteer team will be cooking up pancakes with your choice of sausage or bacon served with juice, coffee and tea. Over the years many Evergreen volunteers have taken a turn to run this successful event. A big thank you goes out to the volunteers, past and present, who have contributed to the success of this this fundariser. Tickets are $5 at the door.

The Comox Valley Concert Band will be holding their annual Mother’s Day Concert on May 14th. This year the theme is Let Me Entertain You! You will be treated to music from one hundred years of hits from stage, screen, TV & radio. Tea, coffee and cookies will be served. Tickets are $5 And not to be missed is Jukebox Saturday Night on a Sunday Afternoon the Best Musical Extravaganza Ever with hits from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. This Sonshine Lunch Program Fundraiser is Sunday May 28th. Put on by Ken McLeod and the Evergreen Club, this is a popular and entertaining event. This annual musical variety show takes place at 2 pm and is always a crowd pleaser.

Tickets $10

Income Tax Time Evergreen Tax Volunteers will be on duty Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays & Fridays (not on Wednesdays) 1 pm to 4 pm in the Computer Room. An information sheet with the eligibility criteria and more details is available in the lobby. After May 2nd the program will run one day a week.

The Android Club meets on the third Monday of each month from 1:00 to 2:30 in the Soroptimist Lounge, except during summer and holidays.

We meet every Thursday morning from 9 - 12, but you can drop in any time between those hours, as some of us do. Make sure you have a project with you, and if you are new, there are beginners – easy ones in the cupboard.

Wherever you find yourselves, embroidering (especially threedimensional) is a pleasant thing to do.

Some of us have been a members for years and years. We bring our finished projects along at times, for everybody to admire. If you are not a member – and read this – drop in one morning and look around. You’ll be impressed with the enterprise.

Here are the latest results of our league as of Mar 7th. In second place are the Gophers with 24 points – skip Barry Graham – third Sheila Mulion – and lead Terry Rant. In first place with 25 points are the All Stars – skip Rob Scharf – third Jen Grieve and lead Gene Butland. Great bowling to everyone.

The Art Group Thursday afternoons in the Craft Room you will find a group of dedicated artists happily splashing beautiful colors onto canvas or art paper. Most any paintings that are hung in the Lunch Room during the year, are for sale. Check with the artist as their name should be on their painting. We meet from 12:30 to 3:30 and you are welcome to walk through to check us out.

Bible Study We meet Tuesdays 9:30 - 11:00 am. in the Soroptomist Lounge for nondenominational study of the Bible.

Printed material is presented for review and discussion. Please contact me if you plan to attend so that a copy of the material can be available for you. Please bring your own Bible as we like to compare. Present study: Faith Steps: How to get your prayers answered. Fee: 25 cents per week.

Book Club

We have completed our Ladies pairs and Men’s pairs. First the Ladies – in second place was the team of Cath Wiseman & Bev Hambly. The winners were Bertina Lefebure & Tammy Butland. Great Bowling to all four women. Now for the Men – in second place was the team of Brian Scarlet and Paul Paul LeBlanc. The winners were the team of Don Wiseman & Ron Webber. Again great bowling to all four men.

The book club meets monthly upstairs in the Soroptimist Room at 1 pm. You do not have to read a certain book but come join us and share whatever book you have read. We met on Monday March 6th with 6 members attending.

Some are still enjoying the Warmer Climate down South.

We then held our Club Champion Pairs competition. We had the Ladies winners bowl against the Men’s winners. Guess what, the ladies beat the socks off the men! Way to go Ladies – ladies rule. We have four more weeks of bowling left.

One of our members just returned from Burma and shared some of the books she had read on the area and the History of same. Most interesting and enjoyed by all.

Our last league day will April 11th. Our Year end Banquet will be on Apr 25th.

We are also in the middle of our Ladies & Men’s singles tournament – so I will have the results of that contest in the next issue.

The Wonder by Emma Donahue was discussed as was Ann Pahett’s The Commonwealth. All interesting reads and read by many of the members present.

We are always looking for new players.

This is a fun group of people – very nice to be around and to play with and against.

CLUB NEWS Camera Club

Cue Sports

The cameral club meets on the first and third Thursday of the month in Rotary Hall. The Lightroom subgroup meets at 12.00 followed by the regular meeting which is 1.00 to 2.30 pm.

Pool (8-Ball / 9-Ball) It is wonderful to see so many 8-Ball players in our Billiards Room each morning.

Our sign-up system is working smoothly but, with so many players, we may even have to start playing some form of 'doubles' on the busier mornings.

We normally have ‘open’ play in the mornings and try to schedule ‘organized’ events for the quieter afternoon times. Our spring 8-Ball Tournament is now underway. Like our other events, there is no entry fee, and all Evergreen Club members are eligible to enter. Greg Brown is coordinating all our 8-Ball / 9-Ball events. Meetings include education sessions, sharing information and the viewing of members’ pictures. We follow the meeting with a social time in the cafeteria. Our field trip crew are always setting up interesting trips.

Snooker The end of March sees the wrap-up of our 6-team Winter Snooker League. Don McCall's team (Don, Wendy Bessey, Mar Kempkens, Andre Schink) have locked up first place for the regular season. We now play-off for both the Championship and Consolation awards. Those winning teams will be recognized next month.

Choristers Here’s hoping we’ll soon be singing “April Showers” and can stop “Make it Snow, Make it Snow, Make it Snow”.

Hahaha. Sure has been a long winter.

Thank heavens we could still get together and sing out at all our rest homes. Not a great turnout but still the residents enjoyed. March was lovely singing songs of the Commonwealth.

Yours truly did tribute the Irish by the “Wearin’ O’ the Green”. St. Paddy’s Day was great with a wonderful lunch and entertainment show after.

We sure are all lucky being members of Evergreen Club. We have a great membership but always love more.

You don’t have to sing like a pro, just come and enjoy! We meet Friday mornings 10-11:30 in the Rotary Hall and as always, everyone is welcome!

Gospel Sing-a-Long

Well, March is over, and so is our spring play "Oh Nurse". The cast and crew worked hard and had a great time doing it. The audience was so receptive, and from the feedback we got, they had a good time and lots of laughs too. We are all winding down now, but we will still get together and decide what we are going to doing next. A big THANK YOU to all who came out to support the Drama Club and the Evergreen Centre!

We usually sing in the Conference Hall from 10:30 – to 11:30 every Thursday morning. Come on out and join us.

We have a good time. By reading the Newsletter you can keep up with all the events at the Evergreen Club.

Come enjoy singing from Ken’s selection of old songs. Karaoke usually meets on the 1st Monday (except holidays) of the month in the Lower Native Sons Hall from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Fabric Painters We are still painting on Tuesday mornings in the Craft Room. We have items for sale in the lounge showcase.

Floor Curling Our teams have been competing in island bonspiels, but play still goes on at the Native Sons Hall on Wednesday afternoons. Anyone interested in learning the game is welcome to show up at 12:45 pm.

Genealogy Club Are you looking for roots?? Of the family kind? Well come and join us on the 3rd Thursday of the month, 1 p.m. in the Soroptimist Room. Here you will find a friendly easy going group that are happy to share addresses of online sites, seminar information, and possible solutions to any hitches in your research. We cater to the beginners, and to the advanced.

Knit & Crochet Group

Mah-Jongg

The Knit and Crochet Club was pleased to receive a visit from the Comox Valley Child Development Association. They gave us a short talk on who they are and how they use our donations. They left with several bags of our handcrafted treats, including afghans, sweaters, hats and much more. In return they left a yarn donation as well as cookies and cupcakes. Both were appreciated.

Tuesday at 12:30 in the Craft Room we have a fun afternoon. It is Mah-Jongg day; we set up at 12:15 & pick the places where we will sit. Some of us come for lunch & have a social time.

We are continuing to craft our yarn delights. There is much conversation and camaraderie as well. The time flies by.

If you would like to join us, we meet Tuesday from 1:30 to 3. Lots of our members come for lunch so feel free to join us. Sitting fee is only a quarter and it’s the best deal in town.

Our last meeting had 29 members in attendance. We enjoyed a visit from Howie Siemens, the Comox Valley emergency coordinator. Did you know B.C has 57 different hazards to be aware of? He stressed the importance of having a preparedness kit ready for any emergency. Thanks Barb for getting us great speakers. On March 15, we went bowling. The March 21st lunch was at Yiamas.

Don’t forget the delicious pancake breakfast on Saturday the first of April. Tax time is here. If you want to volunteer as a greeter for the free tax program, please see Deanne. Our next meeting is on April 5th. If you need a ride call 871-2904 or 334-0887.

Ukulele Club

The Evergreen Recorder Players meet each Friday from 10:00 to 11:30 in the Craft Room. We play music mostly from the Renaissance and Baroque eras in 3, 4, and 5 parts as well as folk and country dance tunes. New players are welcome.

Tuesday April 11th & 25th 4:30-6:15 pm ROTARY HALL Well, just when I thought winter had left, she decided to show me who was boss, and returned with more snow to shovel. You know my thoughts about the white stuff, so I will not go there! Just heard the other day that we have another 30 days or so to put up with “winter.” Can't wait for SPRING.

Texas Hold’em Daylight savings time is sure nice, hopefully sunny days are coming soon. Join us each Wednesday at 12:15pm for setting up of tables, with playing commencing at 12:30 until 3:30pm. Cost is $3.00. New players will be assisted in learning how this game is played.

Ladies Texas Hold ‘em Day A Ladies Texas Hold ‘em Event will take place on Friday May 19th in the Rotary Hall 1 pm - 3 pm. Sign up by emailing Janet jhutchinson@courtenay.ca or talking to Debbie.

Our Club is growing by leaps and bounds, as more and more people are finding out how easy the ukulele is to play, plus have the pleasure of singing so many familiar songs. A number of our members had the opportunity to play at a recent gig, which introduced them to entertaining others. Always seems scary at first, but once tried, realize it is so much fun.

We are an easy group to play with. We do not give lessons, but our facilitator has given us information about various websites that give great instructional lessons in learning how to play the uke. Our music is sent to us via computer, so we have every chance to practice the songs before we come for each session. Remember Mom's old adage, “practice makes perfect.” It might not make you perfect, but it will all become much easier each time you pick up the uke.

We start our sessions with easy chords, and move on in the latter half of our sessions to music that is just a bit more difficult. For those who have not made a commitment as yet, but are thinking about playing the uke, we do have “loaner ukes” that you can sign out and take home for practice. By doing this, you get a chance to try it out before you make the financial commitment. Our only requirement is a current Evergreen Club membership, and a $2.00 drop in fee.

EVERGREEN CLUB NEWS “I have been a house sitter on Vancouver Island for the last three winters. The Evergreen Club in Courtenay is a really great centre for seniors and would be my biggest reason for relocating here from Nova Scotia. I have enjoyed volunteering at the center and hope to come back in soon.”

These two lovely ladies shared special Birthdays this last St. Patricks Day. Exactly 60 years apart, Kristine celebrated her 30th birthday, while Pauline celebrated her 90th birthday.

While updating her membership several months back, Pauline and Kristine discovered they were both St. Patricks Day babies. Pauline then returned March 17th to pass on her green St. Patrick's day hat to Kristine, along with a birthday card and some other goodies.

Kristine was touched by this lovely gesture.

CUE SPORTS

The Billiards Room is now available for members almost every day of the week including some evenings. The hours of availability are confirmed on a weekly basis and posted in the Billiard Room. We play for the pleasure of friendship and we would like you to join us. If you used to play and don’t anymore we hope you will reconsider and come back and join us.

Our Committee is starting to organize and prepare for the 2017/2018 season. This year’s Snooker League play will start in September and end in March 2018. Many more detail will be posted over the next months. The 8 ball/9Ball play information will also be posted in the coming months.

As the new Chairman of Cue Sports (Billiard), I am totally pleased with the response and support that the members are giving me. My concentration for the 2017/2018 season is to: promote Cue Sports, increase membership, maintain a friendly environment, competition and skill improvements.

It takes many people lending their time and efforts to put on two shows of “Oh Nurse.” From the front of house volunteers to the behind the scenes helpers and everyone in between - Great job everyone! What a funny comedy!

All the busy prepping, decorating, cleaning, serving, mixing and flipping hands behind the April 1st pancake breakfast gets a sticky syrupy high five. A $5 full pancake breakfast served to your table is always a real treat that our hungry guests enjoy.

Volunteer Greeters We are up and running with the volunteer tax program and still need a couple more greeters to sit at a table to greet users of this service. You will handout information sheets, numbered waiting cards, completed returns and direct people to volunteer tax preparers. Greeter shifts are available for Thursday and Friday afternoons from 12:30 to about 3:30 until the end of April.

Evergreen Club Decorating Committee Would you like to help decorate the Evergreen Club Lounge?

We have cupboards full of decorating goodies to work from and we are open to new ideas too! The changes would include centrepieces, placemats, and wall decorations.

Flexibility for your availability is guaranteed! Many hands make for light work. A decorated space perks us all up!

Evergreen Club Kitchen Shifts We are always looking to add more kitchen volunteers to have on either our spare board or with scheduled shifts. We appreciate any time and flexibility you can offer. Various times include : Opening 8 am-10 am, AM Host 10 am -1 pm, Dishwasher 11:30 am-1:30 pm, and the Closing PM shift 1 pm -3 pm when the kitchen will close and then the shutdown process begins (typically shift will end around 3:30 pm). We like to match the shift to your needs and preferences.

The Volunteer Income Tax Program is open not only to members of the Evergreen Club but to adults from all over the Comox Valley. The Evergreen Club is proud to provide this service to the community.

Any person participating in a day or overnight trip with the Evergreen Club must have a current membership. A nonmember may attend a trip as a member’s guest. The dates for booking appear in your newsletter. Add your name to the wait list if a trip is sold out. Please indicate your traveling companion’s name when registering.

Day Trips Fees are to be paid in full at time of registration by cash, cheque, debit card, VISA or MasterCard. Please make cheques payable to the “City of Courtenay”.
