EDITORS NOTE The World's Best Sprinter And His Potential Everest Contenders

Nature Strip is currently the highest rated sprinter in the most recent Worlds Best Racehorse rankings. He is also ranked cothird rated best horse in the world with Almond Eye and the first into the field for the A$15 million The Everest Cup. Can things get any better for the amazing 5YO?

Co-owner Rod Lyons couldn’t be prouder of his explosive front-runner.

His trainer now has the unenviable job of finding another horse capable of beating the best sprinter in the world for his own slot in the The Everest.

This first issue we feature both the Tabcorp’s Adam Rytenskild and co-owner Rod Lyons to hear both sides of the story.

Nature Strip, the favourite to win Horse of the Year this season after three Group One wins including his runaway TJ Smith Stakes success, ran fourth in last year’s The Everest behind stablemate Yes Yes Yes but is arguably a better sprinter now.

“I’m confident the learnings from Nature Strip competing in The Everest last year will go a long way in 2020,” said trainer Chris Waller in any interview with The ATC.

We also speak to the connections of three Everest prospects – Allen Endrez, Aligator Blood’s co-owner, Snitz’s trainer Matt Dunn and Gytrash’s trainer Gordon Richard about their journeys to the Everest.

TAB: CREATING MEMORIES WITH THE EVEREST

Once again Everest Diaries speaks to the Adam Rytenskild, the Managing Director - Wagering and Media at Tabcorp about their Everest slot. TAB is the first slot-holder that has confirmed their runner, to create engagement opportunities between their customers and their runner – Nature Strip, one of Australia’s top sprinters. Adam has been with Tabcorp for exactly two decades and has been involved with the Everest from the early days. Q: What would you say has been your favourite The Everest race and why? And similarly, who has been your favourite Everest contender and why? A: How can I go past last year when our TAB runner, Santa Ana Lane, stormed home for a second? He didn’t have the best of luck and ran a mighty race to beat all except the winner, Yes Yes Yes. I’ve enjoyed all three Everest’s so far, including those back-toback wins of Redzel in the first two runnings. Q: How did this year’s partnership with Nature Strip come about?A: Having identified Nature Strip as an ideal fit, we approached the horse’s managing owner, Rod Lyons, informally back in early March and talks grew from there. We agreed to terms and announced the partnership on April 29.

O6 | EVEREST DIARIES

Q: Based on Tabcorp’s past experience with The Everest, what criteria did set for your 2020 Everest Contender that Nature Strip satisfied? A: We like to secure a horse for our slot early so we can create opportunities for our customers to be engaged in the journey and be part of the whole race-day experience. Our team views Nature Strip as arguably the best sprinter in the world. He brilliantly won the big TJ Smith during The Championships at Randwick in April and we feel he is still on the way up. Having champion trainer Chris Waller, who guided Winx through her phenomenal career, is another big plus. Our team thinks James McDonald has developed a real affiliation with the horse, and that now shows in how the horse is settling in his races. Q: This year COVID created some unusual circumstances which may have paved the way for a bigger digital future for the racing industry. Firstly, what from your perspectives do you see changing over the next ten years and secondly, how will the TAB is planning to embrace this digital revolution?

O7 | EVEREST DIARIES

A: In racing, and in wagering and media, we are used to change. From a TAB and Sky perspective, we are successfully using digital to engage our customers and that will continue. Some examples of this are our popular Sky Racing Active app, which is bringing bespoke racing coverage to audiences when and how they want it; TAB Venue Mode, which is about bringing exclusive offers and experiences to digital punters in TABs, pub TABs and racecourses; and the experience improvements and innovations that we are consistently adding to the TAB app and website and in the retail betting environment. Q: When you first heard of The Everest, did you feel that it would become so beloved? A: It’s a race that oozes excitement, not just on the day itself but with all the build-up around which horses will get a slot. People talk about the TAB Everest throughout the year, speculating on which horses will be snapped-up by slot holders. The race is cleverly marketed to a new generation of racing fans, the younger audience, which speaks a lot to the race’s success to date.

Q: What is your favourite racing memory? A: Watching Winx finish her amazing racing career with a win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick would be difficult to top.

Our team views Nature Strip as arguably the best sprinter in the world. He brilliantly won the big TJ Smith during The Championships at Randwick in April and we feel he is still on the way up. ADAM RYTENSKILD/ TABCORP

ROD LYONS: DON’T MESS WITH A FORCE OF NATURE

O9 | EVEREST DIARIES

With owners like the All Blacks coach Steve Hansen, New Zealand businessman Patrick Harrison, Peter Kean, Greg Smith, Jack Van Durren and Rod Lyons, Nature Strip was used to being in celebrity circles even before he ran his first race. Australia's top sprinter was also the first out of the stable when he was the first to be confirmed as the Everest Sprint contender for TAB Corp. The Everest Diaries speaks to co-owner Rod Lyons about Nature Strip's second punt at The Everest Cup, the story of their syndicate and much more: Q: Please tell us a bit more about his campaign towards The Everest? A: After a couple of trials and a track gallop, he will race in the Concorde Stakes followed by another 1200m race in two weeks (The Premier stakes) and then finally The Everest. Q: After The Everest, do you have any international races planned? A: Depending on how Nature Strip performs, we are all pretty keen to travel. We had invitations to Dubai and the Royal Ascot this year but things didn't work out. We love having a good time. As long as Waller agrees, anything is possible!

He looks terrific, and he’s ready to race against the world's best sprinters in The Everest. He was always a big horse, and he has taken his own time to mature. But he’s had just 20odd starts. We believe the best is ahead of him yet. / ROD LYONS/

Q: How is he doing these days? A: He looks terrific, and he’s ready to race against the world's best sprinters in The Everest. He was always a big horse, and he has taken his own time to mature. But he’s had just 20-odd starts. We believe the best is ahead of him yet. Q: Please tell us about your other stable stars? A: We have an unraced but rising 2YO by Under The Lourve who won the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap in 2016. He is related to past Everest contender In Her Time. He is very forward, intelligent and physically very good. Q: What do you think of this year’s Everest offering? A: We believe this year will be even more exciting than last year. Already A$15m has been confirmed as prize money. Only about 5000 spectators are likely to be allowed on the racecourse, but we love the fact that this year racing is the biggest sporting event on TV. Q: Have you considered a punt at The Melbourne Cup with a stayer? A: We enjoy owning horses and winning races. You have to be very lucky to get an Australian-bred horse that can compete. We have a rising 3YO that's a possibility (Tavistock colt out of a Zabeel mare) called Through Irish Eyes. But the English, French, Japanese and Irish have an incredible advantage with hundreds of years of the stayer bloodlines. Q: How did Nature Strip come to be bought by you? A: A friend of a friend bought Nature Strip as a yearling. But they ran into financial troubles and couldn’t pay. So my friend rang and asked if I would like to buy him instead. At that point, he had already been broken in. We liked him from the start and decided to buy him when our friend called to tell us about this situation. Q: Please tell us a bit about yourself? A) I used to be a General Manager of a very large manufacturing company. We moved from Melbourne to a small farm in the Mornington peninsula. We have a few sheep and a few vines growing. It’s a stunning part of the world, with beaches on both sides of the peninsula. We couldn’t be happier!

ALLAN ENDRESZ: FLY LIKE A BUTTERFLY STING LIKE AN ALLIGATOR’ 13 | EVEREST DIARIES

The gregarious man on the phone did not sound like he had been battling the government for over two decades or someone whose wife was battling terminal cancer. He was joyous about having his Sinatra-loving 'Al' in The Everest and the jubilatory spirit was catchy. Alligator Blood’s co-owner Allan Endresz talks with Everest Diaries about his horse and his view of the racing world: Q: What races will you be targeting Alligator Blood leading upto the Everest? A: Alligator Blood (Al) will have a couple of trials at Sunshine Coast QLD in late August followed by his first race on 12 September 2020 at Sunshine Coast in 1,100m open class. If the weights are too great at Sunshine Coast, Al will be sent straight to Sydney for a 1,100m open class race. Al is then set for the Everest on 17 October 2020 (1,200m) & Golden Eagle on 31 October 2020 (1,500m) in Sydney. This is a specifically targeted spring campaign with training based on Al simply enjoying his racing without any undue pressures. Unlike his previous campaigns, Al will be far more mature & stronger with fewer races scheduled and good breaks in between to ensure he remains fresh. Lot’s of water walker/treadmill programs and off-track low-level general riding. Al loves stable life and being around his stable buddies like Wolf Moon (Wandji) & Crypto Tycoon (Simmo).

Q: And what are your plans for the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021? Are any international races on the cards? A: After the Golden Eagle on 31 October 2020, Al will be sent back out to spell for a couple of months. He will then be targeted for an Autumn campaign. Subject to COVID restrictions, racing in Melbourne is an option with the All-Star Mile or a campaign in Sydney with the Group 1 races over 16002000m. International races are an option, and we are certainly open for discussions. Q: What’s on your bucket list of races for Alligator Blood to win over the next few years? A: Group 1 races including CF Orr Stakes, Futurity Stakes, Australian Cup, Memsie Stakes, Makybe Diva Stakes, Turnball Stakes, WS Cox Plate, Emirates Stakes, George Ryder Stakes, Doncaster Handicap, Chipping Norton Stakes, ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes, All Aged Stakes, Winx Stakes, Epsom Handicap, Stradbroke Handicap. Q: As we’ve discussed it could you please tell us more about his virtual profile and his social media success. A: Al is Australia's most popular horse. This was proven with the record-breaking votes he received in the All-Star Mile. 18,501 people voted for Al. He has a social media supporter base of over 144,000 fans. Due to the global economic, social and COVID 19 meltdown, Al the horse (and in name) is resonating as a beacon of hope in these current times of despair and isolation. His name, “Alligator Blood” is a term used in poker which means someone who is tenacious, resilient and never ever gives up. People suffering from financial hardship, mental despair and terminal illnesses are now looking to Al as a reason to keep fighting. Throughout history, horses have appeared out of nowhere to lift the human spirit above and beyond the negative forces of the day. In 1877 there was the great Kincsem. In the late 1920’s and early 1930’s there was Man O’War, Sir Barton, Seabiscuit and Phar Lap. In later years, there were inspirational horses like Secretariat, Citation, Seattle Slew, Frankel, Black Caviar, Tulloch, Winx, Kingston Town, the list

Al loves the Frank Sinatra song, “Fly me to the moon” / ALLAN ENDRESZ / goes on. Al delivers a very subtle message to his followers. It is not whether you win or lose, it’s whether you can keep fighting. Al loves the Frank Sinatra song, “Fly me to the moon”, and has the personality and quirky character to inspire all those around him with his “die once but live every second” attitude. Q: What kind of horse is he? And how would you describe him at the track?A: He is a big kid with ADT. He thinks training is a total waste of his time. He believes he is the king of the castle around other horses and that they should bow down to him. He is a true professional on race day and eager to get the job down. He thinks he is the boss on race day and a born leader of the herd. No one in the herd should be better than him. Al loves the adulation and applause from the crowd, and in particular, follows every camera to give his best pose with head held high. After his Australian Guineas Group 1 victory, the Flemington race track played his favourite song, “Fly me to the moon” over the PA system. Al glided back to the winners' enclosure as if he was doing a victory dance to his favourite song. It was an incredibly emotional victory to hear his fans singing his song while he moved in sync to the music. Q: What according to you, was his best performance thus far and why?A: In terms of Group races, there is no doubt that Al’s victories in the CS Hayes Stakes (G3) 15.03.2020 and Australian Guineas (G1) 29.02.2020 are at the top. The CS Hayes Stakes will be forever immortalized as one of the great twohorse races where Al (QLD) and Catalyst (NZ) fought it out to the very end.

15 | EVEREST DIARIES

The race is very reminiscent of the great battles between Bonecrusher vs Our Waverly Star or Redoute’s Choice vs Testa Rossa. In terms of Al showing his true Alligator Blood spirit and powerful determination to win, my personal favourites are his maiden race at the Sunshine Coast on 30.12. 2018 and Magic Millions $2m 3Yr old 11.01.2020. In the maiden, Al came from 8-10 lengths last to burst home and win on the line. He looked gone for all money but never gave up. On Magic Millions day, he overcame a delay caused by a crash on the highway, endured over 3 hours of heat exhaustion, unable to drink on arrival at the track and refocused even after other horses caused further delays when breaking the barriers early and losing a shoe. Q: Which sales do you frequent when you are buying a horse at the sales? Do you have a bloodstock agent/ mentor helping you through your choices?A: The Ezybonds No 1 Syndicate comprises me, my Uncle Jeff Simpson and Aunty Robyn Simpson. I am the senior managing partner with a 60% interest. We enjoy going to Inglis and Magic Millions' sales. We have no blookstock agents and prefer to select our yearlings ourselves. Our criteria for selection are:Pedigree going back over 5-8 generations. Particularly on the dam side.ConfirmationVet checks, x-rays, scopes, blood tests, flexion, and movement.Temperament with an emphasis on reaction to my singing. Their nature should be similar to that of a pet dog. Q: Which is your favourite horse of all time? And why? A: I have a couple. In the USA it is either Man O’War or Secretariat. Just sensational animals with incredible wills to win. In Australia, it is Better Loosen Up. A local horse owned by locals in my home town of Albury. He achieved the highest accolades against superstars of his generation and remains the only Australian horse to this day to win the Japan Cup. In Hungary (my fathers place of birth), there is Kincsem. The greatest horse in history with the most successive unbeaten runs of 54 in a row.

Q: Why the name Alligator Blood? A: As described above, Al's name means someone who is tenacious, resilient and never gives. His name resonates in my business life after fighting the Australian government for over 21 years (See: http://davissamuel.blogspot.com/2014/10/al lan-endresz-v-commonwealthlitigation.html), rebuilding our businesses, strengthening family and close friends relationships during hard times and, even more importantly, supporting my wife, Joy. She has terminal cancer with not many months to live. Al has become a tower of strength to keep going and enjoy every moment of his racing. It's never been about the money (we declined an offer of $3.2 million). Al is about the love and joy we (and his fans) get from our song loving big pet. Q: How long have you been involved in horses? A: I was first introduced to horse racing in 1983 when I had a small interest in a racehorse called “Canada Kid”. He was a lovely horse but he decided that he only liked to be an eventer. Over the years I have dabbled in syndicates (with some successes) before my Uncle, Aunty and I decided to form the Ezybonds No 1 Syndicate on the 3 January 2007. We have had many winners over that time and now have a portfolio of 22 racehorses. We have high expectations that Al will be joined at Group One-winning level with his stable buddies, Wandji and Simmo. This time next year we may also be talking about our latest crop of yearlings sired from Shalaa, Capitalist, All Too Hard and American Pharoah. They are given plenty of time to mature with x-rays regularly taken every two months to provide them with the best opportunity. They all love music and seem to listen to Al about how to train hard and behave on the track. To be professional while enjoying what a horse does best…..to run.

LEGENDARY OR REAL GYTRASH IS HERE TO STAY THE COURSE

Gytrash is a mythical black dog known in Northern England, was said to haunt lonely roads awaiting travellers. It can also appear in the shape of a horse, mule or crane and can also be benevolent, guiding lost travellers to the right road. They are usually feared. The word describes "any strange looking individual." Potential Everest contender Gytrash, is none of the above. A powerful horse won his 68-year old South Australian trainer Gordon Richards his first Group One success after destroying the reputations & the hope of most punters with a stunning Gr.1 Lightning Stakes victory Gytrash is already on his way to The Everest, having returned to work a few weeks ago. Richards is already being courted by one slot holder. After a long night of celebration, Gordon and Jacqui Richards decided to kill some time before their flight home, by visiting the Inglis Premier Sale. They had no intention of buying when they happened to see a chestnut Lope De Vega colt being paraded for inspection. He took their breath away. "He had this unusual blaze beginning at the forehead and finishing halfway down his face," recalled Gordon. "His confirmation was impossible to fault, and he was a lovely walker."

19 | EVEREST DIARIES

Gordon was pleased as punch when colt's official X/Rays cleared. The trainer made hurried arrangements for a friend to represent him, with strict instructions not to exceed A$40,000 in a few days, when the yearling was due in the ring. Eventually, Gordon's friend secured the chestnut for A$41,000. “I liked his sire and his broodmare sire – Fastnet Rock. And he was good value for money.” Conceived during Lope De Vega’s fourth and final shuttle season in Australia, Gytrash (Correctly pronounced ‘Gee Trah’) and famed sprinter Santa Ana Lane share Fastnet Rock as a broodmare sire as well as a sire. It took Richards some time to convince clients old and new, and Gytrash ended up being syndicated to 40 owners. Gelded as an early 2YO, Gytrash returned after a minor injury to the star-studded Group One Lightning Stakes under Mark Zahra. With the majority of watchers focused Nature Strip and the dual Everest winner Redzel, few were only aware of the Chestnut horse when Gytrash suddenly loomed up to Redzel at the 200m with Nature Strip struggling and Loving Gaby starting to hit top gear. “It was a monstrous thrill when he beat those horses so decisively to give the stable our first ever Group 1”, said Gordon. Thoroughbreds have been in Gordon's life since childhood days in Port Lincoln. "My father Henry was a plumber but hobby trained for years, and there was always a horse or two at our place," he said. "I rode regular trackwork for several years and enjoyed the experience of getting them ready for races.” Gordon’s stables are just across the road from Morphettville racecourse. He’s never been a big team trainer, preferring to keep the numbers around the 20 mark. “It just doesn’t make sense to lose touch with each individual horse for the sake of having large numbers,” said the trainer. “In fact right at the moment, I’ve got two spare boxes”.

“Next year the owners want to head to Dubai for The Dubai World Cup day" /GORDON RICHARDS/ Gordon is already planning his champion's world tour, "This year we had an invite to Royal Ascot. But things didn't work out, and we turned them down. And with the COVID19 situation, eventually, it turned out we couldn't have gone anyways." “Next year the owners want to head to Dubai for the Dubai World Cup Carnival and The Dubai World Cup race day instead of going up to England.” If Gytrash were to head to Dubai, he would be part of Dubai's Silver Jubilee celebrations for the Dubai World Cup.According to Gordon, the son of Lope De Vega is easy to train, “He gets a good dizzy on race days and is very switched on. He knows when it’s time to ‘go’ and is very versatile.” Gordon’s self-professed stable stars include Garner, Bold Star and rising 2YO Crown Mint who is expected back for the Spring Carnival. He’s unconvinced about training a Melbourne Cup winner as one of his ambitions, “Racing is a funny game. It’s very hard to get top-quality Australian bred stayers. Most of them are brought down from Europe for the Melbourne Cup. But then you never know, if you are lucky….” Finally, when asked what would happen if Gytrash won The Everest, he conceded, "quite a few parties would be in order, I suspect. We are all from Adelaide, and most of us would be in Sydney for The Everest, if Gytrash wins, we would have A$15 million reasons for a good party.”

MATTHEW DUNN: WHEN LIFE GIVES YOULEMONS, YOU MAKE LEMONADE

Leading Northern Rivers trainer Matthew Dunn never expected to see the words ‘Snitz’ and ‘The Everest’ in the same sentence. Now it is being whispered in the hallowed racing halls around Australasia. So there we go! After the COVID19 restrictions came into play, Dunn didn’t have a WFH option, “We are in the far North in Murwillumbah. We would typically take our horses into Queensland for the races. When COVID19 restrictions came into force, the borders closed and we couldn’t go into Queensland. So we had to think out-of-the-box. We decided to take our best horses into Sydney and target the top races there instead,” said Dunn. And one of his top horses Snitz has been a revelation since the move. The 5YO gelding was purchased at a Ready To Race sale on the Gold Coast. He has already scored two wins, since his move to Sydney, the latest in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes. “The level he’s racing at now, I didn’t ever envisage him getting too, to be honest,” Dunn said in an interview with Racenet..

23 | EVEREST DIARIES

“The timing of the transition to the Sydney stable and track was a good one. He’s reached full maturity.”

"We sent our best horses to Sydney. They were in peak condition, which helped expedite the journey and helped them remain very competitive." “Snitz is currently on a break, but he is pointed at The Kosciusko, and The Everest” Dunn said. Matthew Dunn started as a jockey and later transitioned to training when he got too heavy, “I rode for about six years before I started training. Rising weight made opportunities less and less frequent as time went on. At that time, I had no real intention to train ever.” After training at Port Macquarie for five years, Gerald Ryan asked him to run his Sydney stable which helped Dunn get broad work experience with a range of horses. The transition hasn’t been easy says Dunn, “I’ve never worked so hard in my life. My partner and I are working separately for the past few months as well. But in the end, it is about getting the job done." His other stable star – Lady Banff has added another string to her bow, coming from off the pace on a heavy track to make a winning return and provide the Matthew Dunn stable with the first leg of a winning double at Rosehill. She is pointed at the Melbourne Filly Series. There doesn’t seem to be a downside so far to the creative solutions Dunn found for his situation during this challenging COVID19 situation.
