The easiest way to start is to ask neighbors, family members, and friends for their recommendations. Word-of-mouth recommendations speak volumes about a company’s work and reputation. After all, you’re hearing from people with first-hand experience!
Search social media.
Social media sites shouldn’t be your only source of information when it comes to finding a good contractor, but they can be a valuable resource.
Search for the companies on your list and check their social media feeds for customer testimonials. You might also find photographs of the company’s workmanship.
Research your choices.
Look online for the following about each contractor on your list:

• Licenses and bonding

Spring
Turn your outside spigots back on and remove their insulating covers. Check each spigot to make sure it’s secure and doesn’t leak, and give your garden hose a once-over to check for cracks.
Have your gutters cleaned. Make sure downspouts are still attached and directed away from your house and foundation.
Schedule a routine HVAC maintenance appointment. Clear away any debris from around the outside condenser unit.
Have your lawn service aerate your yard and spread pre-emergent for weed control. Now is the time to prune trees, shrubs, and bushes.
Inspect the outside of your house for siding cracks or holes, peeling paint, and failing sealant or caulk. Repair and replace as needed.
If you have a pool or lawn irrigation system, start up those systems now, before the temperatures reach summer highs.
With a regular garden hose and mild soap or detergent, wash away the dirt and grime from the outside of your house. Remove and wash window screens.
Clean or replace your furnace filters. Now is also a good time to test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change their batteries.
Schedule an air duct cleaning service appointment. The air duct cleaning crew can also check that your air ducts are sealed and working efficiently, which helps keep your cooling and heating costs down.
Have your carpets, cloth window treatments, and upholstered furniture professionally cleaned.
Switch your ceiling fans to run counterclockwise. This creates a breezy downdraft to reduce your air conditioning use as temperatures rise.
Summer
Water your lawn and landscaping regularly. Aim for early-morning hours (between 4 and 10 a.m.) to minimize water evaporation in the heat. In most areas, grass needs about one inch of water per week to stay green and healthy.
Fertilize warm-season grasses, such as bermuda, zoysia, and centipede grass.
Mow the lawn every seven to ten days. Be careful not to cut too much each time. Cutting the grass too short can leave it susceptible to diseases and insect infestations.
Check any trees in the yard for dead branches and signs of pest or disease. An arborist can inspect trees you’re concerned about and let you know whether they need to be removed.
Stain and seal your wood fence and deck. Be sure to pressure wash them first so the stain will last longer and look nicer over time.
Change out (or clean) your HVAC system filters. Springtime brings a lot of pollen, so a mid-summer filter change is a good idea to keep allergies and dust at bay.
If it’s been a while since you had your tile grout sealed (or if it’s never been done), summer is a good time to tackle this project.
If you have humidity issues in your basement or crawl space, they’re likely to worsen in warm, humid weather. Check those areas for musty odors, mold, and moisture issues such as leaks or standing water. A dehumidifier can help draw moisture out of the air. For major leaks and water seepage, contact a waterproofing company.
If you’ve been needing to have your house painted, summer is a good time for that. Plan ahead as much as possible, since professional painters are busy during this time of year.
Winter
Drain your outdoor water spigots, and then shut off the water to them. Cover the faucets with insulating covers. Drain your garden hose and store it indoors.
Make sure you’re ready for snow and cold temperatures. Test your snow blower and dig out the snow shovel. If your area gets a lot of snow, make sure you have a roof rake, too.
Replace (or clean) your furnace filter. A clean filter helps your HVAC system run efficiently and can reduce dust accumulation around the house.
Check windows and exterior doors for drafts and gaps. Fill spaces (even small ones) with caulk or weather stripping to help cut down on heat loss.
Pull your refrigerator out from the wall and clean the coils on the back or underside of the appliance.
Have an electrician inspect your home’s main electrical panel for safety and to avoid any issues with overloaded circuits, especially with holiday light displays.
Insulate any pipes that run along exterior walls or unheated spaces. This is especially important if you live in a part of the country with harsh winters.
Check the concrete structures around your house, such as the foundation, driveway, patio, and walkway, for cracks or soil erosion. If you notice foundation cracks, reach out to a foundation repair specialist for advice.
Inspect your fence and gate for loose or deteriorating boards and worn or rusty hardware. Make repairs as needed.
Once the trees are bare, take a close look for leaning trees or branches that could break during winter weather. Contact a tree service for any pruning or removal needs.
