• The right HVAC system size is key to efficiency. A too-small system won’t do a good job controlling

The ideal temperature is between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. For safety reasons, don’t set the temperature to below 120 or above 140. When you load the dishwasher, make sure nothing blocks the spray arm.
• If you use your garbage disposal, turn on cold water before putting food into it. Food should be completely ground up and flushed out before the disposal is turned off. Feeding the disposal a large amount of waste too fast can clog pipes, so feed large amounts slowly or, better yet, throw it in the trash or compost.
• The high heat from an oven’s self-cleaning cycle is dangerous and can cause important oven parts to burn out, so try to avoid using that feature. Though it is a far more manual process, cleaning your oven by hand is much safer.
• Rubber-backed mats can cause unbalanced washing machine loads. The rubber backing can also break down and separate, clogging hoses, pumps, filters, and valves. If possible, wash these types of items by hand in a tub or laundry sink.
• Avoid running loose change, pocket knives, and other metal items through the wash. They can damage the washing machine’s internal components and pump system. Washing machine hoses can deteriorate over time. Avoid a surprise leak by replacing your washer hose approximately every five years. If you leave town for an extended period of time, shut off the water to your washing machine so you don’t have to worry about leaks.

• The basement must be dry before remodeling begins. Even small amounts of water can damage carpets and furniture or cause mold or mildew growth. Have any past basement moisture issues addressed before the remodeling work starts.
• Remodeling work can last from several days to several months. Your contractor may move some larger items for you. • Tub-to-shower conversion projects take about a day to complete. A bathtub that is already surrounded by walls can be replaced with a shower relatively easily since the drains and water lines are already in place.
• The shower-to-tub conversion process is similar to that of converting a bathtub to a shower. Your contractor will remove the shower stall and install a bathtub in its place. These projects normally take one or two days.
• Tub and shower conversion contractors often offer one-day bathroom “facelifts,” or cosmetic remodels. If your bathroom doesn’t have functional issues, a bathroom facelift might be the perfect solution.

• Pavers are not mortared in place. Instead, a layer of polymeric or regular sand is swept into the cracks between the pavers. Polymeric sand binds together when sprayed with water, which makes the sand permanent.
• A penetrating sealer protects the pavers from stains from motor oil, tire marks, or grease and makes them look deeper and richer in color. Penetrating sealer prevents water from entering the pavers and weakening them over time.
• Permeable pavers have joints filled with small stones. This feature lets water flow into the ground underneath, which reduces runoff and puddling on walkways, patios, and driveways.

Prices that seem too good to be true usually are. Some companies that offer “great deals” provide low-quality work or use substandard materials, while others engage in questionable business practices like tax dodging or working without insurance. Some companies will raise the price or add items after the homeowner commits to the project.
Be wary of a company selling door to door. Some contractors have well-rehearsed, door-to-door scams designed to quickly separate you from your money. They travel from city to city preying on unsuspecting homeowners; unfortunately, many of these scam artists target elderly residents. Reputable contractors rely more on referrals than door-to-door sales.
Resist high-pressure sales. Some companies offer “today only” incentives to encourage you to make a quick decision. Avoid companies practicing this high-pressure sales technique. Only compare apples to apples. Educate yourself about the quality of what you are buying, or taking the lowest price may cost you more in the end. Some companies knowingly deliver low quality at a low price. In sales calls, these companies do not stress the low quality as much as a low price. Avoid business on a handshake. If a company representative or contractor claims his or her handshake is as good as a contract, keep looking. Reputable companies that sell large-ticket items and services insist on contracts.
Avoid paying for everything up front. If you make a large, up-front cash payment to a company that promptly goes out of business or skips town, you will lose that money. If an up-front payment is unavoidable, consider charging the payment to a credit card. Your credit card company may allow you to dispute the charge if services are not rendered.
Be wary of the vocal minority. The small percentage of customers who submit online reviews tends to skew to extremes. You will typically find reviews that provide overwhelming praise for the company or a harsh recounting of the homeowner’s experience. The validity of these reviews is not in question, but the two extremes are not truly representative of a company’s overall performance.
Never open an account in your name for a contractor. Some individuals or contractors request an account at a local store in the homeowner’s name to allow the contractor to charge the homeowner’s materials directly to this account. If a contractor’s credit is not good enough to open an account, you should probably stay away.
Never make the final payment until you are completely happy. Contractors could be much less interested in making you happy after they have been paid in full. Some less-reputable individuals will present many seemingly plausible reasons why you should pay them now instead of waiting until the end of the project. Do not be pressured into paying early.
Thoroughly check references. Before hiring a contractor for a major project such as remodeling, interview a few of the company’s references. When talking with references, ask questions about quality, schedule adherence, cleanup, communication, and disagreement resolution. Request lien releases. A lien is a claim made against a homeowner’s property by an individual or company that has supplied labor or materials and has not been paid.
