• Rubber-backed mats can cause unbalanced washing machine loads. The rubber backing can also break down and separate, clogging hoses, pumps, filters, and valves. If possible, wash these types of items by hand in a tub or laundry sink.
• Avoid running loose change, pocket knives, and other metal items through the wash. They can damage the washing machine’s internal components and pump system. Washing machine hoses can deteriorate over time. Avoid a surprise leak by replacing your washer hose approximately every five years.

Before a concrete slab is poured, the supporting soil must be compacted to prevent washout and erosion. This should be done with a mechanical tamping machine for best results.

If the floor joists are no longer structurally sound, they might need to be strengthened by adding a beam to an existing joist in a process called “sistering.” Removing a compromised joist altogether can create other structural problems. Sistering in another beam instead creates the structural support the compromised joist needs without putting the entire structure at risk.

• Traditional or portland cement stucco is usually applied in three layers: a scratch coat, a base coat, and a colored or finish coat. The first layer can go directly on a concrete or masonry wall. • Exterior Insulation and Finish System (EIFS) is another form of stucco and has been in use since the 1960s. It’s sometimes referred to as synthetic stucco. EIFS is made of a layer of polystyrene insulation board covered with one finish layer of stucco. The first layer of EIFS is glued and/or mechanically fastened to the exterior wall. Because it’s so lightweight, EIFS is the more popular choice for homes with wood framing.
• EIFS is easier and less time consuming to install than traditional stucco, and it is less susceptible to fading and cracking. EIFS also provides significantly better insulation than traditional stucco. Early versions of EIFS didn’t do a great job of protecting homes from moisture damage, but the products were updated and installation methods and standards changed so that homeowners could expect a better result. Fortunately, today’s EIFS repels moisture just as efficiently as traditional stucco.
• A house clad with EIFS should have both a vapor barrier and a drainage system between the exterior wall and the first layer of the EIFS system. These elements help keep the EIFS in good shape and prevent moisture and drainage problems.
