To establish the recommendations in each Best Pick Reports® publication, we calculate a star rating based on the past three years of a company’s customer reviews. • Regular preventive maintenance is key to ensuring that your system doesn’t fail when you need it most. Ask if the company offers maintenance plans or membership programs. Maintenance plans typically include two maintenance visits per year in addition to discounts and perks.
• The right HVAC system size is key to efficiently cooling and heating your home. If the system is too small, it won’t do a good job controlling the temperature of the house on really hot or cold
days. If the system is too large, it will cycle on and off frequently, which reduces its efficiency. The Manual J formula helps contractors size HVAC systems.
• Your service provider may offer labor warranties on the services they perform. Your equipment will most likely carry a manufacturers’ warranty, too. Ask your HVAC service company whether they honor manufacturer warranties or whether you will need to contact the manufacturer directly in the event of a problem. Get all warranty information in writing.
• To take the next step in lowering your utility bills and increasing your home’s efficiency, look into duct sealing. HVAC ductwork can leak 30 to 35 percent of the system capacity into attics and crawl spaces. That’s cooled or heated air you’re paying for but not using. Sealing the ducts can lower energy costs and boost air circulation.

TOP CONSUMER TIPS
• Concrete is made up of three basic components: portland cement, aggregate (rock, sand, or gravel), and water. Cement acts as a binding agent when mixed with aggregate and water. The mixture is then poured and allowed to harden.
• Concrete grade is a measure of the strength of the concrete. It’s measured in pounds per square inch (psi). Residential driveway concrete is usually 3,000 or 4,000 psi and at least four inches thick. Greater thickness does equal extra strength. If you have a heavy truck or more than a couple of cars, ask your contractor about going up to five or six inches of concrete at certain points on the driveway.
• The first step in replacing a concrete slab is to break up and remove the old slab. Then, the contractor may put down extra gravel or fill dirt to create a stronger base. This reinforced base
layer should be firmly compacted to prevent soil erosion over time. The contractor may add a steel reinforcement grid for strength, particularly if the project is a driveway. With temporary forms in place, the concrete is poured and smoothed. The curing process starts as soon as the concrete is poured and smoothed.
• Control joints are shallow grooves cut into a concrete slab just after it’s poured. If the concrete is going to crack as it hardens and shrinks, it will usually happen at the control joints. Isolation joints, also called expansion joints, separate a concrete slab from a wall or other structure. These joints are filled with a synthetic material and then sealed. Isolation joints also help prevent cracking by making space for the concrete to expand during hot weather.
• Concrete that isn’t cured correctly can be as much as 50 percent weaker than properly cured concrete. The curing process may seem time-consuming, but the results are well worth it. Concrete can be cured several different ways, but the goal is always to prevent water from evaporating from the concrete as it cures.
• Concrete can be artistically stamped or tinted. These applications can make plain concrete mimic almost any surface, from stone to wood grain.

• Once the repair work is done, stay on top of maintenance so the problem doesn’t happen again. Have your gutters cleaned at least twice per year. Make sure that your home has an adequate number of downspouts. The downspouts also need to be long enough to carry water away from your house, patio, or walkway. If you have recurring erosion issues around concrete slabs, your yard might need to be regraded. Having a drainage system installed can also help. Contact a drainage specialist for advice.
• If you have more concrete work done in the future, ask the contractor how they’ll prep the ground. The ground beneath concrete is made up of layers of soil. Each of these layers has its own properties, like density and moisture content. When the layers settle over the years, the concrete slabs above them can settle and crack. Before a concrete slab is poured, the supporting soil must be compacted. This step prevents washout and erosion and should be done with a mechanical tamping machine for best results.

The majority of our Best Pick companies are identified through our due diligence research. We also accept nominations from homeowners and companies. We develop a company’s rating based on review and survey data; the company’s financial standing; and proper licenses and insurance. Every Best Pick company must maintain extremely high satisfaction rates. At least 80 percent of a company’s customer responses through in-house surveying must be positive (on a scale of 1-5, a positive experience is a rating of 4 or 5). If Google reviews are referenced, the company must have an overall 4.0 or greater rating over the past three years. Only qualified companies are invited into the Best Pick program.
To send Best Pick Reports to the areas that our companies service, we obtain basic homeowner information like name and address from publicly available sources such as county records and property data providers, similar to how sites like whitepages. com or zillow.com obtain data. We
take your privacy very seriously and will never share or sell this data.
The rigorous nature of our qualification process means that many companies do not qualify. Since all Best Pick companies must requalify each year, it is also possible for a company to lose its Best Pick status if it fails to meet our standards during our annual qualification cycle.
A particular company may not be listed in Best Pick Reports for a variety of reasons. It is possible the company did not receive a good rating, does not conduct a considerable amount of business in the geographic area, does not have the required insurance and licenses, or chose not to participate in the Best Pick program. Additionally, we may not be familiar with every company in a market, in which case we’d be happy to consider a nomination.
Companies that meet our requirements have the option of participating in the Best Pick program. Those that choose to participate receive the designation and authorize us to include their name in our semiannual publication and on our website. These companies pay a fee that covers the cost of our qualification research and allows us to distribute our publication at no cost to homeowners. Companies cannot buy their way in. Participation in the Best Pick program is by invitation only and is completely voluntary.
