McCarthy Cup, Arch Pottery, Friends of St Lukes and a New Theatre

This photo of the ever enthusiastic DJ Carey was taken in 1993 when The AllIreland Senior hurling final was won by Kilkenny, beating Galway 2-17 to 1-15 in the final at Croke Park, Dublin. It was the year that Olliie Walsh, as manager, brought Kilkenny to their 25th AllIreland title and saw DJ Carey crowned player of the year.

There were many interesting happenings in the county that year including the opening by Ray Power of Castle Arch Pottery in the autumn of 1993 in Kilkenny’s famous Castle Yard and the setting up of The Friends of St. Luke’s General Hospital which has gone from strength to strength. Of course the opening on April 4th 1993 of the Watergate Theatre in Parliament St. Kilkenny was a massive step forward for those involved with, and a love of, the arts. Twenty one years later, the Theatre has seen some fantastic productions staged here and itcontinues to operate to an excellent standard.

LET THE CELEBRATIONS BEGIN To kick off our celebrations, we will hold three events on our Birthday which is April 4th:

* A broadcast of the Sue Nunn show (K.C.L.R) 10am to 12 noon, Live from the Watergate * A free concert by St Patrick’s Brass and Reed Band 1p.m to 2p.m * The launch of 21 artists-21 years 6.00pm (Upstairs Gallery) Although admission to the lunchtime concert is free, booking is advisable.

Further events to celebrate our 21st will include A Photographic competition in conjunction with Kilkenny Photographic Society and fuji film A Three day Festival of Theatre (July) A production of Da by Hugh Leonard (July) Watergate Miscellany (August) A youth musical production of Miss Saigon (November)

WONDERFUL SUPPORT It is important that as we mark this occasion we say a word of thanks to all who have supported us over the years. In a year when we say farewell to the Borough Council, we especially acknowledge the incredible support given to the theatre by the executive and elected members. It was the vision by the then County manager Mr. Paddy Donnelly and the Town Clerk Mr. Donal O’Brien that saw the dream of a theatre in Kilkenny become a reality. This dream became possible thanks to the joint working relationship between the aforementioned Officers of the local council and The Arts Council of Ireland. Year after year, the campaign to open a new theatre in Kilkenny was actively pursued by Mr O Brien and supported by the elected members of Kilkenny Corporation. There are those councillors who supported this project

but who are no longer with us .Those who replaced them on the council have been equally supportive. When the Council disbands in May, the city will have lost an integral part of the community. The Watergate acknowledges and wishes to thank past and present members of the local authority for their support.

GRANT ALLOCATION The Watergate was disappointed to receive a 7% cut in it’s Arts Council programming funding this year. The average cut to venues was 9%. This is the fourth year that the theatre has suffered a substantial cut and I suppose the anticipation would have been to see certain areas suffer. We have already seen the loss of two of our staff due to cuts and like a lot of venues,

a cut in wages to remaining staff has been implemented. We have however, continued to produce a wide and varied programme , that includes theatre, music, comedy and dance. Two things which continue to strengthen our cause is the support of the Borough and County Council and the support we receive from the public at the box office. The major effect the cut imposes is that it reduces our bargaining power with visiting companies, and restricts us from chasing certain shows. Like all those involved in the Arts, the expectation is that you can still turn out the same quantity and quality of work with less money. Which, by the way, we will endeavour to do.

What A Wonderful World

Photographic Competition What a Wonderful World” is a song written by Bob Thiele (as “George Douglas”) and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released as a single in 1967. To celebrate their 21st Birthday, The Watergate is running a photographic competition with the theme “what a wonderful world” So, whether it is the sun rising, your baby smiling, a moment from sport be creative and try to approach the subject with your individual interpretation not the stereotype of the suject. Think what is unique about your subject, perhaps a close up of the pattern of hair on a baby’s head, the setting sun on the inside wall of your house, or the muddied hands of the football player. Whatever you think deserves the caption of “What a Wonderful World” we would love to receive your entry. First prize

BRIDGDE CAMERA FINE PIX S4800 second prize

Watergate gift voucher to the value of €150 third prize

Watergate gift voucher to the value of €100 The judges are as follows Niamh Moroney (Watergate ) Gypsy Ray (Visual Artist/Photographer) Richard Dwyer ( Kilkenny Photographic Society)
