Everett Community College 2016 annual report

Dear Friends of EvCC: Everett Community College has been changing lives for 75 years.

The college looks very different now than it did in 1941. What’s stayed the same is the belief that EvCC can help all students succeed.

In 2015-16, EvCC earned national recognition for the college’s efforts to improve student success, raise graduation rates, and help students transfer to four-year colleges and universities.

The college also has worked successfully with students in the area of career and job readiness.

Almost 100 percent of students who successfully complete EvCC's precision machining program at the Advanced Manufacturing and Education Training Center (AMTEC) secure good-paying jobs in the industry. Students who graduate from health sciences programs enter jobs in those careers paying excellent wages.

We could not do this without the support of our board members, donors, supporters, legislators, faculty and staff.

Student Success EvCC Earns National Recognition Nursing graduate David Swale knows that Everett Community College is working harder than ever to help students stay in college and graduate.

• The Aspen Institute College Excellence Program named EvCC one of the nation’s top 150 community colleges.

“I have been able to succeed more due to the community of staff at EvCC,” said Swale, who is working at Providence Regional Medical Center while he earns his bachelor of science in nursing from University of Washington Bothell at EvCC’s campus.

• Achieving the Dream recognized EvCC as a nationwide leader in student success for the college’s commitment to student completion and closing achievement gaps.

He’s not the only one recognizing EvCC’s dedication to student success.

His experience, and the success of thousands of other students like him, is why EvCC is receiving national acknowledgement: • The Community College Research Center and the Aspen Institute recognized EvCC as one of six colleges in the country leading the way in helping students successfully transfer to four-year schools. The report also recognizes the University of Washington and Western Washington University as EvCC partners in transfer success.

“EvCC faculty, staff, and leadership are honored to be recognized for our work to help students stay in school and graduate. The college will build on our success by continuing to improve outcomes and encouraging all students to reach their goals,” said EvCC President David Beyer.

CELEBRATING Retired Art Instructor Russell Day Donates Sculpture A sculpture Russell Day once kept on his back deck now has a place of honor in Everett Community College’s Whitehorse Hall.

Day, a 103-year-old former EvCC art instructor, joined more than 75 people May 27 in Whitehorse Hall to celebrate the installation of his untitled 238-pound Blenko glass and concrete sculpture.

The sculpture was created by Day in 1955 and donated to the college in 2015.

Day founded the arts program at Everett Junior College. He worked at the college from 1947 to 1976, and is best known for his pioneering work with silver and glass.

“When I was a student and I was working with glass, there wasn’t anyone else who knew anything about glass other than Russell,” said internationally known glass artist Dale Chihuly, who attended the dedication.

In 2008, EvCC renamed its art gallery in honor of Day. He and his wife Marjorie, who taught English at EvCC, created an annual scholarship for a student pursuing an associate of fine arts degree.

THE PAST EvCC Hall of Fame

Members of the 1951 Everett Junior College baseball team, Burt Estes, Barry Boyden, Ed Pepple, John Garner, and Jim Williams, gathered 65 years later on June 8 at EvCC. The team was one of five inducted into the EvCC Athletic Hall of Fame.

Other teams include the track teams from 1947, 1948 and 1949 and the golf team from 1963. Players inducted were Aaron Cunningham, Jay Easterwood, Shirley Hauter, Jerry Parrish and Dick Skinner.

Distinguished Alumni

Providence Health & Services chief operating officer Kim Williams and accountant Bill Fulton are the college’s 2016 distinguished alumni. This is the tenth year the Alumni Association has named distinguished alumni. The award is the highest honor given to Everett Community College and Everett Junior College alumni.

BUILDING THE AMTEC Expands The future of manufacturing is robotics. EvCC is getting students ready for that future by offering state-of-the-art training for jobs as electro-mechanical technicians working in robotics operations, testing, and equipment maintenance.

The program, called Mechatronics, is the key reason for a $2.5 million expansion of the college’s Advanced Manufacturing Training & Education Center (AMTEC).

The expansion adds 17,000 square feet to AMTEC. The new space, which opened in late September, includes eight classrooms and a mechatronics lab.

The expansion includes a $217,000 mechatronics simulator. The program prepares students for jobs as electro-mechanical technicians working in robotics operations, testing, and equipment maintenance.

“Last year, Washington state had more than 12,000 job opening requiring mechatronics skills. The AMTEC expansion opens the door to family-wage jobs for our graduates in that field,” said John Bonner, EvCC Vice President of Corporate and Workforce Training.

In June, the Washington state Center of Excellence for Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing, which is located at EvCC, received a $3.9 million grant for EvCC and four other partner community colleges to fund mechatronics equipment, career coaches, curriculum development and faculty training.

FUTURE Student Housing Opens EvCC’s new student housing building, Mountain View, opened to students Sept. 11, and a second residence hall is under construction.

The housing expansion was initially due to demand for housing for international students.

“It’s been a wonderful surprise to see the incredible amount of interest from our domestic students in living on campus. They want a university experience on a two-year campus and we’ll be able to provide that to them,” said EvCC Director of Housing Lea Wasson, noting that some residents come from eastern Washington and out of state.

Mountain View, constructed by Snohomish-based real estate developer Koz Development, Inc., is home to 120 students renting private rooms. Before Mountain View, the college ran the 36-bed Lona Vista apartments, located at 10th and Broadway.

The college demolished those apartments in July to make way for the college’s second student housing building, which will open in September 2017. EvCC also knocked down a building at College Plaza to create additional parking spaces to replace spots that will be used for student housing.

“These buildings are an important part of the effort to redevelop the north Broadway corridor. The local community will feel the economic impact of additional students living and going to school in this area,” said Pat Sisneros, EvCC vice president of College Services.

"WE CHOSE EVCC" Chuck Close Artist As a 16-year old high school student struggling with learning disabilities, Close was advised to pursue automotive repair rather than academics.

But a chance meeting with EvCC instructors Russell and Marjorie Day changed his course. Through their encouragement and advice, Close instead pursued his passion for art.

“They were so supportive and welcoming and encouraged me that I could have a life in art without academic skills,” he said. “They said all that mattered was passion, hard work and a modest amount of talent; I was off and running.”

Chuck's two years at Everett Junior College with art instructors Day, Don Tompkins and Larry Bakke were a life-changing experience.

“I owe everything I have accomplished and who I have become to that encounter with Russ and Marjorie Day,” he said.

Close’s work has been shown in the world’s finest galleries, and he is widely considered one of America’s best contemporary artists.

Spring and Ahmad Bennett Accountant and Veterans Student Success Coordinator Spring and Ahmad Bennett met while serving in the U.S. military onboard a Navy ship. Marriage and the transition to life outside the military followed, with both partners unsure about their career options.

Finding EvCC to be very “veteran friendly,” the two enrolled and began the journey to their current careers.

Spring now works as Senior Accountant at Precept Wine, while Ahmad serves as the Coordinator at the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success at Lake Washington Institute of Technology.

“EvCC was an opportunity for me to reinvent myself,” Ahmad Bennett said. “Navigating the college process teaches communication, critical thinking, and time management-skills I use in every job situation.”

“Within the first 15 minutes of my time at EvCC, I learned all I needed to start a company 20 years later that eventually changed the paradigm of TV main title design and commercial production. That company grew to 150 creative digital filmmakers across three offices in Seattle, Chicago and Los Angeles.

“I walked into the photo department, and there was this traveling fine art photography exhibit that (EvCC photography instructor) Lloyd Weller put together. The photographer was Jerry Uelsmann – an early pioneer in image manipulation. That showed me that photography could be both literal and figurative; real and surreal.

“Then (Weller) stuck his head out of a doorway. Lloyd Weller (is) a very approachable but disciplined thinker, and the guy in charge of the photography program. I enrolled in EvCC’s associate program, and took Lloyd's evening workshop classes, which taught me the power of the ‘collaborative auteur’ (auteur theory is the French film theory that looks for the author in filmmaking).

“Lloyd’s workshop showed me the value of a collaborative studio environment in the pursuit of both personal and collective creative pursuits. Those two ingredients are the basis for Digital Kitchen, period.

“My studies at the University of Washington were valuable, but Lloyd and Jerry are essence of my career."

EVCC FOUNDATION EvCC Honors First Foundation Leader For more than 50 years, Bill Deller was part of Everett Community College campus life.

Now, his name is a permanent part of the college’s future. EvCC’s Board of Trustees named the outdoor plaza between the Parks Student Union, Henry M. Jackson Center and Gray Wolf Hall in honor of Deller.

“This is a place where students gather,” said EvCC President David Beyer. “It’s a perfect location to honor a man who believes as strongly as anyone I’ve met in the mission of EvCC.” Dozens of friends, family and former colleagues packed Bill Deller Plaza May 26 to celebrate with Deller and his family.

Deller career at EvCC started in 1955 as a coach and physical education instructor.

He also taught aviation maintenance, coached swimming, gymnastics and golf. He became the college’s Dean of Students in 1968, then the first executive director of the EvCC Foundation. He also served as the first advisor to the college’s Black Student Union. A World War II Navy veteran, Deller also advised the Veterans Club.

“I was excited about being here during the week. I was excited for Mondays,” Deller recalled at the plaza dedication. “I told my wife ‘I don’t know why they’re paying me.’”

Deller is the parent and grandparent of several EvCC alumni, including his son Mike Deller, a current member of EvCC’s Board of Trustees, his daughter Patty Safley and his grandson Brett Deller.

When Carol Newman turned 16, she went to work. Her dad was losing his eyesight, and her job helped support her family.

She worked steadily until the recession hit.

“I lost my job and found myself unable to obtain employment for the first time in my life,” Newman said.

“Although I had great work experience, I did not have the educational piece, which prevented me from even applying for a similar job.”

With help from Worker Retraining funds, she enrolled at EvCC to study business administration.

“I knew I wanted to continue my education, but being unemployed, I was very concerned about how I was

going to be able to pay my tuition and living expenses,” she said.

An EvCC Foundation scholarship aided paying for her tuition and books. She graduated with a 4.0 GPA and is now employed by the college’s Corporate & Continuing Education Center.

Newman wants EvCC Foundation donors to know that she’s grateful for the investment in her future.

“This was part of my journey to my best experience at EvCC, of being able to walk in the 2016 commencement, with my Mom, husband, and family smiling in the audience,” she said.

Diana Cortes is the first in her family to go to college, but her parents weren’t far behind.

Cortes, 19, of Granite Falls took classes at Everett Community College in the morning. In the afternoon, she’d care for her three younger siblings while her mom, Laura, and dad, Radai, attended GED preparation classes.

While at EvCC she participated in the college’s Undocumented Student Success program, which brings undocumented students together with faculty and staff to offer support.

The program is one of many efforts EvCC is making to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Cortes, who started at EvCC as a Running Start student, graduated June 10 from the college. She was one of only 20 students admitted this year to Eastern Washington University’s dental hygiene program.
