My project explores the way modern women are incited to
romanticise their experiences through the eyes of a consumer. I believe the media we consume aims to determine the type of girl we are. We feel the need to squeeze ourselves into boxes to make ourselves more consumable.
Does the media we consume, consume us?
Through social media, we put manufactured versions of ourselves out there in an attempt to seek validation but are often met with criticism and judgement.
I wanted to scrutinise well-known female stereotypes through a satirical lens; photographing and writing about them with the same cruelty and judgement that they are faced with online since that’s what social media encourages us to do.
People we don’t even know feel free to judge the image we’re selling. They are unsparing, they eviscerate our sense of self – even if that sense of self is formed by the medium that wants to destroy it.
