: “CULTURAL CENTER LIMASSOL, - A LANDSCAPE BUILDING ON LIMASSOL HILLS” - CYPRUS

CASE STUDY - PERSONAL THOUGHS / 2015-2016 This case study is the result of a set of sketches , an attempt to give life to a small part of ideas and inspirations that come and go.

Three levels, three storeys are lightly bended to allow a continuous and smooth access-movement between them. As for the visual perception, it is attempted to enhance the character of a landcape- building which flows between the surroundings and harmoniously blends with the golden-green colours of Cypriot landscape.

ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION / 2015 Design Team : Arsis Architects (Prof. NTUA Moraitis Kostas, Katerina Helidoni, Chrysa Krassa) + Prof. NTUA Konstantinidou Helen + Evangelou Demetris + Theocharis Panagiotis The central idea of the proposal is the promotion of the building’s public character and its integration with the University campus landscape. It’s internal composition and configuration, with the exception of the laboratory fields where the access is limited, attempts to maintain the public character of the institution (educational institute of “open type”).

The central idea comes to life with the design of a roof garden following the line of the adjecent “Belvedere”. This effortlessly results in a continuous line of pedestrian movement connecting with the main pedestrian street on which most University campus facilities are articulated. This roof garden reffered to as the the “Botanical Garden of Hippocrates”, carries an explicit symbolic, as well as a practical, meaning (bioclimatic aspect etc). Τhe central axis aims to connect the outdoor with the indoor foyer, penetrating the built volume, thus enhancing the open-public character of the building. The central axis interconnects the sub-regions of the building, of a degrading level of privicy (from of entry - controlled areas such as laboratories, storerooms for sensitive equipment etc to less controlled ones such as professors offices, secretariat etc.

GREECE Whole title : «Recovery and Requalification of the area between streets D. Solomou - M. Alexandrou and the Municipal Land in OD 210» CONCEPT ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION / 2015 Design Team : Evangelou Demetris, Siarkou Thomais, Assistant: Stamatogianni Maria

The architectural proposal deals with an area where the rapid urban sprawl and the absence of the design is visible. The fact that the area between streets D. Solomou M. Alexandrou, referred to as the Emporiou Square, was never designed as a square is a design challenge.

Aiming to retain the character of the square as this of an area of cross movements and trade, the proposal organizes and streamlines the private car and pedestrian movements improving the position of the pedestrian while, creates the conditions for the space of the new square to act as pole of attraction in the city, linking the scattered pieces of history and urban palimpsest, contributing to the aesthetic unity, and the unity of the urban image.

It inserts the curved shape, in the plan level, as well as a slightly sloping amphitheatric hollow which is a central-focal point of the composition. The element of the curve runs throughout the synthetic approach and applies to most elements of urban equipment in order to ensure a uniform approach.

The proposal introduces the dimension of improving the microclimate and so suggests -beyond traffic consolidation- the conservation and enhancement of existing planting with endemic types of the region, the replacement of the hard floors with other less thermo-reflective ones and the indirect promotion of milder forms of mobility (ex. bike).

: “INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL IN LUSAIL CITY� - DOHA, QATAR

PROPOSAL / 2014 Collaboration : A&S Architects - Studio75 Architects - Evangelou Demetris Lusail City extends across an area of 38 square km and includes four exclusive islands and 19 multi-purpose residential, mixed use entertainment and commercial districts. The total estimated population of Lusail will eventually reach 450 000 people.

The proposed facility consists of 25000 sq. m of closed and semi-open spaces. (school areas = 15.000 sq. m. & Housing areas = 10.000 sq. m.).

The New International School is going to accommodate approximately 900 students and a similar teaching and supporting staff. The three distinct groups of buildings that are created are a) the residences, b) the Elementary School for ages between 6 and 11 years old (Primary Education), and c) the Junior/ Senior High School for the ages between 12-15 and 15-18 years old (Secondary Education).

The residences for the teachers and the administration employees will be located in a separate section. They will have independent access but at the same time will function as an integral part of a comprehensive architectural solution. They will be developed in two different forms: independent houses and apartments.

: “ENHANCING URBAN GREEN SPACE IN THE NATIONAL RESISTANCE ΤRIANGLE AREA IN NEA ERI-

THREA»” - Municipality of Kifissia, Attika, Greece Architecture Office : A&S Architects

The area of intervention is located in the «National Resistance Triangle» area in OT 305 of the Municipal Unity of Nea Erithrea, a suburb of Athens. Area of plot 29 945 sq.m (~3 hectare). It is a blank green space integrating outdoor sports facilities (a basketball court and football 5x5 field) in the western part of the plot. The proposal is designed to integrate the fabric of the city, as a landscaped green space and a recreational haven for sports and other activities.

Τhe attempt for aesthetic enhancement and functional upgrade of the area of intervention parallely aims at the creation of an appropriate microclimate and increase of the existing vegetation in terms of seasonality. The reduced need for maintenance and continuous irrigation of vegetation (shrub and tree) were also aimed at. The element of water is added to produce optical cooling and to be sensed through the microclimate. The existing vegetation, mainly trees, such as pines, olive trees and acacias is entirely safeguarded (all remain in the same place apart from a few that are transplanted)and is enriched with koutsoupies (cercis siliquastrum), mulberry (morus platanoides), sycamore trees (platanus orientalis), Lefkes argyrofylles (populus alba), cypress (Cupressus sempervirens), carob (ceratonia siliqua), pine (pinus halepensis) and others sparcely added to the synthesis . To a smaller part of land a vegetable garden is provised, including aromatic plants and turf. The natural terrain, dominant in the proposed synthesis, only enriched with a small scale of interventions, limiting the earthworks.

The main axes of movement and the square are highlighted with «hard» materials as beton, wooden decks, marble, and pebble plates while secondary movements and playing surfaces are formed with more ‘earthy’ materials: ceramic powder, gravel and soil.

: «LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURES OFF LIMITS» - A JOURNEY THROUGH FREI OTTO’S WORKS

LECTURE PROJECT NTUA Supervisor : Gyftopoulos Stauros Presentation date : 21 March 2014 / Rated 10/10 Although membrane constructions were not recognized as part of the official architecture by the middle of the last century, they have special features which can be the expression of a comprehensive way of conceiving architecture and construction. This essay aims to highlight the special features of these structures namely of tension membrane structures.

The essay is structured on a journey through the first works of Frei Otto, a key personality in the history of textile structures. This journey, which is completed by the presentation form-finding methods and experiments of F. O, shows the gradual development of this type of constructions to the project-benchmark of fabric constructions and light structures - the German Pavilion in Expo67 Montreal. In each of the projects analyzed, identifying the structural peculiarities and limitations of these structures, shows the way in which each individual project contributed to the achievement of the longest cable fabric manufacture in the world.

The study closes with a presentation of two impressive contemporary works, the Millennium Dome and the Japanese pavilion at Hannover (Expo 2000) of Shigeru Ban. Although very different from the works of the first part of the essay, they contribute to the understanding of the exciting world of textile structures through a different perspective.

: «APPARTMENT BLOCK, TOURIST AREA OF YERMASOYIA, LIMASSOL» - CYPRUS

PROPOSAL (CONCEPT DESIGN) / PRIVATE PROJECT / 2011-2012

The 7-storey building features simple and sharp lines. It is organized mainly with the use of flat surfaces (planar surfaces) horizontal and vertical with different materialities. Emphasis is layed on the vertical dimension, in contrast with the other buildings of the area where the horizontal dimension is overemphasized (hotels of the coastal road). Flat surfaces complement large windows that enhance the relationship and visual connection of the interior with the exterior, thus avoiding the impression of a robust and closed built volume. Being mainly orientated towards the south, it overlooks the waterfront and the horizon. The location of the plot and the hypsometric difference between the perimetric roads, gave the opportunity to shape the underground parking and auxillary uses of the building in the most distinctive way.

Many of the appartments are formed in two levels (floors).

: “COMPLEX COMPRISING 3 VACATION HOUSES� - VILLAGE AMARGETI, PAPHOS, CYPRUS

PROPOSAL (CONCEPT DESIGN) / PRIVATE PROJECT / 2012 The complex of three houses located at mountain village Amargeti, in Paphos province, was a big challenge because of the rigid slope of the terrain. The plot is in a 400m distance from the main road axis and about 1,3 km from the central square of the village. Houses were designed for members of the same family, so it was opted to allow them operate as a whole (to some extend), but at the same time to ensure that they remain autonomous. From the beginning of the design the topography of the plot generated a set of interesting ideas concerning the way the structures attach on the ground and the relation between them.

The distances between the houses surpassed the minimum imposed by the building regulations (6m for a development on the same plot) in order to produce green zones (the idea being that the houses look like they rise from them) and maintain the fascinating panoramic view that privileged plot offers. Agriculture is a way of life in those mountain communities (they also called wine-villages) so it was fair enough that a provision was made for an easy access to the underground (from the house level), which is intended to be used for cultivation.

: «DESIGN INTERVENTION ON AN ABANDONED EX-INDUSTRIAL BUILDING IN METAXOURGIO»

ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, STUDIO 6 : «TIME AND TRANSFORMATION OF SPACE. INTEGRATION OF A NEW FUNCTION IN AN EXISTING BUILDING STRUCTURE» / Department III - «Architecture Language, Communication and Design» / NTUA Professors : Solon Ksenopoulos, N.-I. Terzoglou, I. Karidi This studio aims in the design and re-interpretation of an empty industrial shell of reinforced concrete and the re-organization of the outdoor space developing around it. The building and the outdoor area are located on the 64 Agisilaou street , Metaxourgio, within walking distance from Piraeus Street and Koumoundourou Square. The building has been abandoned, wear and damage showing to the structural elements.

The outdoor space acts as an extensive and dilapidated urban void. The shell and the outdoor area were originally used as a silk factory Company «Bombyx» and thereafter as a car park.

The region being clearly degraded in terms of building stock and social fabric, beyond the recent efforts to reform and regenerate it, needing to vitaly integrate green and free spaces(so far acting as urban voids resulting from the demolition of buildings and barracks, or as semi-designed and neglected green spaces) in the urban fabric, It was thus proposed that the new use emphasizes social and cultural activities. In my proposal the building turns into a sports center, for outdoor sports, as well as indoor activities with a small gym and cafeteria. Sport is indeed a non-familiar use in the area, which can, however, bring the different cultural groups living in the region closer to one another. The nature of sport is to stimulate people, both psychologically and spiritually. There is an underlying conceptual relevance of this and the reuse of the old shell: the building should not only be picturesquely re-born, but to include a use that brings back energy and stimulation due to human presence and activity.

: “EXPERIMENTAL BUILDING COMPOSITION OF SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS WHICH IMPOSED TO COVER BIG SPANS”

ARCHITECTURE STUDIO: “SPECIAL TOPICS IN ARCHITECTURAL MORPHOLOGY 6” / Department I - Architectural Design / NTUA Professors : K. Kremezi, St. Giftopoulos This studio requested for a cover in a large area of archaeological ruins of a basilica (Byzantine church), near the National Gardens (Athens).

The proposal was a shelter of 35x80m, a composition of repeated paraboloid forms, specifically “tent of four points”. Each paraboloid lays on a rigid metallic frame. The outer parts , made of membrane (synthetic fabric - possibly PTFE) and the middle region, showed in brown, are wooden flat elements (sheets). These sheets clamped and secured onto a cable net are joined together flexibly to allow the subtle movements of the bearing system.

: «GREEK HIGH-SCHOOL LANITEION»-A NEW OPPORTUNITY FOR LIMASSOL

DIPLOMA PROJECT NTUA Supervisors : Gyftopoulos Stauros, Konstantinidou Helen Presentation date : 07 April 2014 / Βαθμολογήθηκε με 9,6/10 Quick description My diploma project deals with the historic school complex of Laniteion. Through selected interventions, documented demolitions and a comprehensive concept design approach, it is attempted to heal the wounds of the past and the poorly organized extensions or additions. The goal being to create a harmonious link between the past and the future, of a polyvalent educational establishment that preserves the historical memory of the space.

Main text Laniteion is a place which reflects the modern history of the city of Limassol , and a place charged with images, feelings and memories of the past. Historically the secondary education in Limassol dates back to 1819 with the founding of the first one-year “Greek School”. Originally, private homes and facilities of the Metropolis occasionally hosted the school. In the dawn of the 1940’s, shortly before the outbreak of the W.W.2, the small town begins to spread beyond the compact settlement near the port. The rising number of new students, increases for the school building’s requirements. In 1945 a leader of commerce and industry, as well as a great benefactor of the city, Evagoras Lanitis announces a big donation for the construction of modern school building close to the then city’s limits. The first wings delivered in 1951 and a year later, following his death, the “Greek High School of Limassol” was renamed to “Laniteion GREEK SCHOOL” in his honor.

The next few years, the relentless British attitude towards the national question of the Union with Greece, is succeeded by the liberation struggle of EOKA 1955-1959.

The school population being first in the forefront, in December 1955 the famous “Battle of Laniteion” takes place and leads to it being closed for a year. In 1960 the agreements of Zurich and London lead to a treaty regarding the independence of Cyprus, but intra problems undermine peace. In 1974 the Turkish invasion brings in a large wave of refugees settled in Limassol. With the population doubling abruptly the student population follows . Since then, continuous non architect additions and short -visioned alterations are being made to cover requirements, altering its original character and the quality of space, built or open. Currently in the complex 1 (spatially distinct), one Primary, a secondary school and two high schools (Lanition A and B) are operating. Based on future intentions of the Ministry of Education the two high schools will be consolidated and the building and outdoor spaces of the high school will be enriched to follow, an emphasis in the lesson of music and sports. The proclamation of a prior architectural contest (2011) was a vivid base of evidence for buildings needing to be demolished and others where there was still a choice.

The purely personal Scenario for the approach and reconstruction Laniteion, apart from the vital inclusion of the site to the city’s urban tissue, lays particular emphasis on the upgrade of the facilities indoors as well as outdoors.

The approach for the master plan design was a continuous in-situ reading of space, with regard to the visual and kinesthetic perception that one can have as they browse through this area of 120 hectares (including athletics stadium, etc.). The synthetic scenarios for the landscape were also based on sociological and behavioral analysis of the students. Several open spaces, types of patios and large terraces used as more ‘public’ spaces, spaces with crossover movements where one is easily exposed, ultimately served as passages,. On the contrary, the smallest recesses and corners that offer a certain “privacy” worked best as stops. Small groups of students always need their personal space and the satisfaction of their curiosity, ensured by the visual contact with the surrounding area. Beyond all that, the dimension of microclimate was to be significantly important, turning the (back) north courtyard a rich living space, since the existing green spaces enjoy the shading of the elongated building blocks.

Regarding the interventions and new facilities added, there was an attempt not to volumetrically downplay the historical volumes retained, yet to declare a modern architectural proposal.

Final MASTER PLAN

For THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL the building volume remaining, covers a large part of the building program, so there are mostly targeted points of interventions and additions, both in built and open spaces eg New library, unification of the movements on the first floor etc.

For the former Lanition high-School B, which is converted to a new secondary school, the requirements are more. The emphasis is laid on installations required for Music classes (studio design, audio, audiovisual, etc.). Having studied the light tensile structures namely Fabric Membrane structures, one can say that the projects and the lessons of Frei Otto and Shigeru Ban are more than ever relevant and legitimate. The light construction of the amphitheater (160 seats) is studied according to the requirements for good acoustics. The concave of the impregnated membrane, facing inwards, (PTFE or PVC) act as reflectors and rear with shaped holes as absorbent. The permeability of the illumination on the film gives even more advantages.

CASE STUDY - PERSONAL THOUGHS / 2015-2016 A personal work which arise from plenty of papers with raw sketches i had on my desk and on my scrapbook. Is a fantastic coastal place with a building which ignores the gravity law. At the same mood are the vehicles, the spacejets. Yes, i confess the influence from the Star Wars movie, to which my little son is maniac. That case study is imposed to an additive process through the time.
