Rogers presents lectures on sex and culture BY CHRISTINE TEMPLE Editor in Chief
Sy Rogers will speak today during chapel and at 9 a.m. in Psychology of Personality, a behavioral sciences class held in Trask 305. Rogers is a renowned speaker who focuses on God, culture and sexuality, according to John Plake, campus pastor and director of spiritual life. Rogers spoke Thursday during Helping Skills, a behav-
ioral sciences class, and during an evening monologue titled “Sense and Sensuality.” Rogers also spoke during Thursday’s chapel. His message was centered on redemption. “God is forgiving; consequences aren’t.” He cited Samson, David and Rahab as biblical examples of people who overcame sexual sin through God’s redemption. Rogers also shared his own journey of sexuality and how the events in his life directly influenced his behavior.
Plake said that sexuality and relationships are a topic of discussion in chapel every few years at Evangel. Rogers was a guest speaker three years ago and according to Plake, students requested that he come back again. “A guy like Sy has a story to tell. Some of our students may struggle with the same kind of things that he has struggled with and it helps to know that you are not the only human being who has ever faced these issues.”
Sexuality is something everyone must deal with; therefore it must be an ongoing discussion on campus, according to Plake. “This is something we would be dumb to ignore.” Plake said that the spiritual life department is actively discussing ways to create informal spaces where students can feel free to ask questions on the issue without the fear of feeling foolish. “I would give us a C minus in that area. We’re hoping to do better.”

Evangel awards faculty and staff for service AB kicks
Ayres and the Huechtemans honored during Homecoming banquet off fall by getting their ‘Game On’ BY CAITLIN GEORGE Staff Writer
Three faculty members were presented with the Distinguished Service Award during the Homecoming Banquet Saturday. The three recipients of the award were Duane Huechteman, Rebecca Huechteman and Bill Ayres. The Alumni Board of Directors chose the recipients of the award. Duane Huechteman has been a professor of mathematics for 35 years and has spent those years at Evangel. He graduated in 1968 and has since been the interim director of graduate studies, faculty representative on the Board of Administration, men’s tennis coach and women’s golf coach. Rebecca Huechteman has been a professor of education for 30 years and was on the formative committee that helped start the
education graduate program. She was the chair of the Education Department and is the faculty sponsor for Student Missouri State Teacher’s Association. Bill Ayers has worked full-time at Evangel since his graduation in 1981. He graduated with a degree in music education. He began working in the physical plant and transferred to the IT department in 2000. He manages and serves as a specialist for CAMS. “When we were initially told the news, it reminded us that we’re old. No faculty member gets the award unless they have taught at Evangel for a really long time,” Rebecca Huechteman said. “We were honored because we believe in the mission of
Evangel. It’s a special type of college.” Duane Huechteman said, “What was special about receiving the award is that we both got it at the same time and as a couple.” Bill Ayres said he was surprised but honored to receive the award. “I don’t know that I’ve done any-
thing that is particularly exemplary. I’ve just always felt this is where God wanted me to be. I could go home satisfied at the end of the day because I agree with Evangel’s goals,” Ayres said. “The job is worth it because it helps the kingdom of God in some small way.”
