Dakar, city, capital of Senegal, and one of the chief seaports on the western African coast. It is located midway between the mouths of the Gambia and Sénégal rivers on the southeastern side of the Cape Verde Peninsula, close to Africa’s most westerly point.

Dakar’s harbour is one of the best in western Africa, protected by the limestone cliffs of the cape and by a system of breakwaters.

Dakar was colonized by the French in 1857, creating a vibrant francophone city at one of the most imporant ports in the Atlantic Slave Trade.

The rich history of Dakar and its people can be described as “teranga” which translates into being a hospitable neighbor.

About 30km from Dakar’s city center lies the region of Diamniadio. Diamniado Lake City Project is a 2 billion dollar project to be completed in 2035 as a response to the city’s population and business growth in the last century. With close proximity to the Africa United Nations Headquarters, the Chinese Industrial Park, Dakar’s convention center, and the Leopold Sedar Senghor International Airport, Diamniadio is the up and coming location for a boutique hotel to host the high volume of business in Dakar.

Investor group - Semer Investment Hotel Concentrique will be funded by SEMER Investment Group LLC, an Emirates-Senegal based company with offices in Dubai and Dakar, has launched a new vision for West Africa’s economic powerhouse of Dakar visualising a US$ 2 Billion ‘New Dakar’ city extension project titled, ‘Diamniadio Lake City’.

Design Implications: -Create a space with ease in use for professionals that may not speak French.

-Distinguish the hotel from competition by creating a personalized experience.

-Create spaces that align with the interest of the buisness traveler.

Hotel Guest - Business Traveler The majority of the guests at the hotel will be business travelers from Africa, as well as China, Europe, and South America.

Design Implications: -Create a space where the hotel serves as a sanctuary for the guest.

-Areas that allow for dierent modes of work when at the hotel.

-Fuse the idea of work and play within a space.

Employee - Front and Back of House The design of the hotel uses a digital check in and point of sale system, so the majority of the hotel employees will be back of house aside from the expanded concierge desk, valet, and servers.

Design Implications: -Create a space where the hotel can function seamlessly without employees.

-Give the employees a space seperate from the main lobby to eat and change.

-Minimize travel distance for front of house sta.

GOALS Address the cultural + social identities of Dakar by reflecting the surrounding vernacular through the design’s interior architecture.

Create an interior space plan that is an abstracted version of the rings of the Baobab tree.

Create guest autonomy by providing a hyper-personalized guest experience through individualized spaces and universal design.

Utilize vertical adjacencies to create connectivity between spaces.

Integrate branding and way-finding to create an authentic hotel experience.

Create ease in use for hotel employees by minimizing travel distance to maximize service.

CENTRUM is designed and inspired by Africa’s iconic “tree of life”, the Baobab tree. The Baobab tree has a rich and signicant history in Africa of providing food, shelter, and water for animals and humans for up to 5,000 years. The signicance of the Baobab tree has turned it into the CYNOSURE of Dakar’s culture. Similar to the gravitational energy that the Baobab tree has, the hotel will address the concept of CYNOSURE by employing concentric forms to create movement and harmony on a meta level in order to create a dynamic and interwoven relationship between guest and place.

Level one’s space plan aims to draw the guest around and to the center of the space. As one enters through the port cochere, they are greeted with a virtual receptionist to facilitate the late arrivals from China and the Middle East. The business center with circadian rythem rooms and the cafe - bar allow for guests to utilize the ďŹ rst level at any time of day.

Grand Stair

Level two further emphasizes the concentric movement found in level one by utilizing similar curved forms to delinate spaces. The cynosure this level is the bar, creating a space that the user will graviate to. The echoing spaces include a ďŹ ve star restaurant to nourish the working soul, as well as a lounge and tasting room to grow and ďŹ nd culture as one relaxes.

The guest levels aim to acheive refuge by creating a space with a comfortable amount of square meters. On levels 7 and 8, there are four two-story king suites that are loft style to provide seperation from living and sleeping. All other rooms on levels 7 and 8 are ADA accessable junior suites with roll-in tubs to accomodate all guests and promote universal design.
