HOLIDAY 2013

Dear Readers, The Christmas tree might not be lit up in Rockefeller Center just yet, but it is certainly the holiday season! Of course, right now is just holiday preseason. It all starts with Thanksgiving, as families come together around that beloved bird, after a day of watching parades and football. It travels straight through to New Year’s Day, where we ambitiously set goals while simultaneously nursing our wounds from the night before. This year, we have a couple of different reasons to celebrate. For starters, spiked eggnog and presents. And the marking of our tenth issue of Talk of the Town! It has been a roller coaster two and a half years, but we are proud that the magazine continues to grow, and that every day more and more people become aware of it. People often come up to me and tell me to keep up the good work, but I must admit, it isn’t all me. First, I’d like to thank Larry Inserra. It is his passion and vision that makes this all possible. Larry is way too humble to seek recognition, but he’s too deserving and incredible of a man for me not to signal him out. Secondly, I’d like to tip my hat to Sergio Rodrigues. Sergio works tirelessly every day to ensure that Talk of the Town is better and better each issue, and I can say with confidence, he has been truly successful. Lastly, the team at BC the Magazine deserves a well-earned shout out for helping to put it all together. Sharon, Steven, Nayda, Brandon and Justin, all of your hard work is so greatly appreciated. We hold Talk of the Town to an incredibly high standard, one which you meet and exceed issue after issue. Enough with the thanks; let’s get to the good stuff: presents. Your wife or girlfriend may complain that it’s hard to buy you things. Luckily, we made it easy with our 2013 gift guide, full of every cool item this holiday season has to offer. Looking to be a bit more adventurous? Check out Man Central for the most unique products money can buy. Then there’s Matt Simms. The youngest son of Bergen County’s Football Family, Matt is now the backup QB to Geno Smith on the New York Jets. Young, talented and unexpectedly down-to-earth, Matt’s story is not what you’d expect. We also sat down with Rocky Patel and got to know what sparked his dream of creating one of the premier cigar brands in the country. If you’re finally at the age where clothes are cool to get as presents, look no further than our style guide. No one will look cooler and feel warmer than you this winter. If clothes are not your thing, though, you can always just check out the new BMW M6 Gran Coupe. While I can’t promise you’ll ever reach its top speed, I can guarantee that when driving it you’ll be in one of the coolest, quickest cars on the road. There’s much more inside, but hey, my eggnog awaits. Wishing you the happiest and healthiest of holidays! Bob Dodge

ocky Patel was living the life of a successful Hollywood attorney until he decided it was time for a big change. Now more than a decade later, he has built Rocky Patel Premium Cigars into a global brand that is enjoyed by thousands. Transitioning from a Hollywood attorney to a cigar manufacturer isn’t something that you hear of every day. Tell us why and how you switched gears. gars when we were at some of the movie sets and then we joined the Grand Havana Room, and this kid, about 22 years old, asked me to invest with him in making cigars out of Honduras. At that time, I just thought it was a fun idea, a cool idea. Pretty soon, after a couple of years of pouring money down this investment, I realized that I really needed to focus on this business or I was going to lose all my money. So I went down to Nicaragua, Honduras and [the Dominican Republic], asked a lot of questions, started learning about the whole cigar making process. I worked in the farms, in the fermentation, in the curing, and made thousands and thousands of lists to educate my palate, and I just fell in love with it. Everyone said, “You’ll never make it. You’re not Cuban. You’re not Latin. This is a business that’s handed down from generations. It’s not something you can just walk into.” And that got my antlers up. I said I’m going to show these guys, and by that time I was burned out with LA, burned out with practicing law and I just went for it. So I moved to Naples, Florida, and started literally out of a garage with two employees and that’s how we started.

they would not ferment the tobacco long enough. They would switch the binder on you. They’d switch the filler on you, so we kept getting inconsistent cigars. That was our biggest problem, until we took control of our own manufacturing in about 2001. That’s when I put my name on the cigar because that’s when I could guarantee the consistency, the quality, the attention to detail that really comes with every Rocky Patel premium cigar. And that’s our key to success. I think we have implemented the strictest quality control standards of any cigar maker in the world. And that’s when I was able to lend my name to my own brand.

Your first cigars rolled out in 1996 under the name “Indian Tabac Company.” It must have been a long process to develop them. How did they turn out? Looking back, in 1996, the cigars were really not that good, but nobody was making good product at that time because the boom was on and there was a big shortage of tobacco. Everybody was rushing to make cigars as fast as they could and they weren’t paying attention to quality and detail, and all that slowly started changing. Our problem back then was we were having other people make cigars for us. I’d come up with a great blend, like the Super Fuerte blend. It was just a fabulous blend. It got high ratings, but then the cigar makers we used would cheat the system and

What do you consider the best cigars you’ve made over the years? Certainly The Vintage line, The Edge line, The Decade, The 15th Anniversary, and now the brand new one called Royale.

Tell us more about the rebranding that took place around 2000 to 2002. When I had complete control over the curing, the fermentation, the construction, the aging—the whole cigar process, the tobacco process, and I knew that the cigars were made the right way, with my strict quality control standards, with my own blend, with all the capabilities to make a perfect, consistent cigar— that’s when I finally put my name on my own cigar. The first one was the 1990 Vintage, followed by the Vintage 1992, and then The Edge.

Tell us how you acquired your handson expertise in the tobacco industry, and what makes for a great cigar. Well certainly it was asking a lot of dumb questions in Honduras and Nicaragua, but it was about getting my hands dirty—literally working in the farms, seeing how the tobacco is picked, farmed, soiled. You know, the fact that soil samples for fertilizer, the nursery, priming, then working in a curing barn, then working in a fermentation room to make sure the tobacco is completely fermented Continued on pg. 12

over three or four years. You have to really touch the tobacco and conquer the tobacco, smoke the tobacco. Then finally blending, making hundreds and hundreds of blends to the point where I can literally smoke a cigar and tell you where the tobaccos are from. Knowing the characteristics of the particular seed from each country of origin and how they’re going to taste depending on where in the plant, what priming you pick the leaves from, knowing what kind of flavorful palate it’s going to give and that just takes a lot of experience and a ton of cigar smoking and really being so passionate that I would actually eat and breathe cigars. From the minute I wake up to the time I put my head on the pillow, I’m always thinking about cigars. I’m thinking about blends. I’m thinking about marketing, creating, advertising. We don’t have an ad agency. I come up with my own marketing schemes,

my own bands, packaging designs, ad campaigns. All of that is kind of swimming in my brain. I think my palate is good with cigars because I have a lot of experience with cooking. Since I was a child, I would learn to cook, and I’m proud of my cooking capabilities in the kitchen, and I think I have the same palate for great wine, so having that palate where your senses can pick up all these different acquired tastes from all over the world, and with wine, I think the same thing lends itself over to cigars. Do you own any of the tobacco factories? We own our factory in Nicaragua. We also have our own tobacco farms there. The factory in Honduras is a joint-venture factory between us and Nestor Plasencia. The brand has grown tremendously over the years. How do you feel about what you’ve accomplished, and where do you see Rocky Patel going in the future? We’re very, very proud of the fact that people enjoy our cigars. We’re proud that people say they’re the most consistent cigars on the marketplace. I love meeting all the consumers on the road during my many trips that I take promoting, and traveling throughout the country and the world. What we want to do is keep making great quality, consistent cigars, and creating new and unique blends that have never been created before. I’m always searching for tobaccos from unique parts of

the world. We used tobaccos from Panama and Costa Rica before anyone ever used them. I’m looking at possibly farming tobacco in India. We’re always looking for unique, different things. We’re always pushing the envelope. The other thing I’m also looking for is building more of the lifestyle company. Next year we’re going to release our first wine, and hopefully our first single malt scotch. We’re working on opening a few more bars. We have one in Naples, Florida, which is one of the coolest cigar lounges in the world. We want to show people that smoking cigars is just not kind of a dark, library-looking lounge with a bunch of old men sitting around sipping scotch. We want to show the younger generation that it’s fun. You can have great music. It can be a hip place, and a very social place, so that’s the message we’ve trying to spread. Though you’re the primary shareholder, this is a family business. What’s it like working with family? Basically I have my brother and my cousin. I started the business, and I slowly brought them into the business. It’s great because they’re very, very passionate about what they do. My brother is very much on the road promoting our brand and now he has his own brand called Bold by Nish Patel. Then my cousin Nimish spends a lot of time at the factory with trips, and quality control and working with the factories. He also has his own brand now called the Nimmy D. We have a lot of fun working together. Most of your tobacco comes from Honduras and Nicaragua. How do they compare to Cuban tobacco? The tobacco from Nicaragua is some of the finest tobacco in the world today. There are always rumors that the Cubans are buying their tobacco from Nicaragua. The Continued on pg. 14

CM10 The flagship floorstanding loudspeaker of the CM range sets a new standard for performance. It combines Bowers & Wilkins technologies from our reference ranges with innovative new construction techniques. The result is simply spectacular. The top-of-the-range CM10 stands out from the crowd with its tweeter-on-top design - a feature shared with our 800 Series Diamond reference speakers. Isolating the tweeter aids imaging and dispersion for a more natural, spacious sound. The tweeter's unique "double dome" construction also prevents the voice coil from distorting at higher frequencies. The result raises the bar for precision and control even at the highest frequencies, but particularly in the audible spectrum. Moving the tweeter out of the cabinet means space inside for a third bass driver. The extra driver in the CM10 delivers a powerful bass punch, but also reduced distortion and extended bass response - no matter how loud or quiet you like it. problem with the Cuban tobacco is that it’s really mostly a myth that Cuban cigars are any good. The quality and construction on a scale of one to ten is a three. Eighty percent of the cigars are plugged. The tobacco is not fermented enough. They don’t spend the time because they like to rush the cigars out because they need money. They make too many cigars too fast. Then as far as the tobacco itself, they don’t have money for fertilizer. They grow on the same soil too often so there’s not enough nutrition in the soil. So I definitely think by far, and I’m not just being subjective about this, I think this is a true feeling with every cigar maker out there that you’ll ask, that Cuban tobacco is not what it used to be 20 years ago, and the Cuban cigars certainly are not what they used to be. It’s like when you couldn’t get Coors

beer east of the Rockies everybody wanted it, and that’s what happened to Cuban cigars. I read you once traveled to 600 cities in 750 days. Do you ever get tired? I think I’ve done that this year. It’s been crazy. I have this relentless energy and this passion, and this drive for this success. Maybe it’s a fear of failure. I don’t know which one it is but that drives me, and I’m very passionate about what I do, and when I decide to do something, I really try to do the best job that I can possibly do. In the last month, what cities have you traveled to? In the last ten days I was in Germany, in Düsseldorf and Dortmund. I was in Dubai. I was in Hong Kong. I was in China. I was in Dallas, New

York and Philadelphia. At Talk of the Town, we love great food. Since you’ve been all over, what’s your favorite spot? I went to a restaurant in Houston, Texas, called Underbelly, which was absolutely phenomenal. Everyone should check this place out. It’s fabulous. Just unbelievable food. I went to a place that was called ABC Kitchen in Manhattan that was just phenomenal and exceptional. I get to eat at so many cool boutique hotel restaurants. I’m a foodie. If you had to pick an all-time favorite cigar, what would it be? It would probably be The Decade Torpedo. That cigar has a lot of nutmeg, caramel, chocolate, coffee, hints of spice, but it’s really creamy and elegant and well balanced.

MUNITIO Acoustic Magic on the Move WRITTEN BY

SERGIO RODRIGUES

This innovative personal-audio company is definitely going places in the industry

T

o call MUNITIO a personal-audio company is accurate, but this story of intense quality and sincere passion runs much deeper than that. MUNITIO represents the culmination of the life and dreams of Daniel Massaro, a drummer, songwriter and producer. Given Daniel’s music industry background, the connections he cultivated growing up around the Southern California music scene, and his own incredibly mo-

bile lifestyle, it’s easy to see how he would be just the individual to develop high-end headphones for constantly on-the-go people who care about exceptional sound quality. In 2007, Massaro found himself experimenting with driver shapes and sizes, material composition, and form factor while maintaining his personal sense of style in a heavily style-divergent industry. The result? A company focused on precise, accurate and enjoyable audio, all bridged

together with mil-spec quality materials, beautiful urban flair and a focus on mobility. MUNITIO gives every detail the premium treatment—Kevlar cables resist tangling; protective titanium driver-enclosure coating looks beautiful without causing magnetic driver interference; protein leather over-ear pads on custom-design-ed gimbals seal to the user’s unique head shape. Massaro quickly discovered that 9.5mm neodymium drivers fit the Continued on pg. 18

exact sound profile he was looking for in earphones: accurate with pounding lows, clear highs and buttery mids. These drivers made sound enjoyable across the entire frequency spectrum. With the realization that his drivers fit perfectly in a 9mm bullet casing, Massaro premiered the limited-to-500 run of Teknines. Since the initial success of the Teknines, MUNITIO has expanded its lineup. The next generation of Teknines, the NINES are great-sounding earphones in a gorgeous case, available in black, gold or silver. As attention grabbing as they are, nothing compares to the accurate-yet-warm tone accomplished by the single-piece copper alloy case with Bass Enhancing Chamber. Users can feel

the hit of the bass drum, the drop of a beat, and the rumbling overtones of a solid bass line. Unlike many low-frequency focused earphones, the NINES—and their cousins the SV and the Billets—still sound great in the midrange and sacrifice absolutely nothing in the pursuit of high-frequency clarity. While MUNITIO remains committed to both its superior-quality products and street-savvy style, the business dwarfs its past self. The first 500 Teknines were Massaro’s chance to reveal his audio vision to the world. MUNITIO now boasts three different models of earbuds and a new company-first, the PRO40 overear headphones. With 40mm drivers and much of the same technology

that made his 9mm earbuds into world beaters, the PRO40s represent the MUNITIO mission: combining the audio-quality needs of studio musicians and industry professionals with a stylish, comfortable fashion statement. It all starts with the 40mm drivers; neodymium, of course, for remarkably accurate sound reproduction. Housed in the proprietary Bass Enhancing Chamber, these drivers deliver remarkably accurate lows. Don’t let that fool you, though. MUNITIO designs focus on accurate response across the curve, meaning crystal-clear highs and mids. Regardless of the audio source, MUNITIO strives to make it sound accurate. Continued on pg. 20

CODA AXIS gimbal technology makes the PRO40 housings flexible enough to form to every user’s unique head shape without contorting the driver housings, which can change the sound and feel of music. The removable, Kevlar-wrapped 1/8 inch-jack cable handles all the transmission duties, driving sound from the audio source to the PRO40s. The Kevlar wrap keeps the cable protected from day-to-day wear and tear, and is seriously less prone to pocket tangles than traditional rubber-coated headphone cables. that they’ll be taken on the road. The PRO40 displays this mentality in its waterproof hard-shell carrying case; it zips shut and features a carabineer, making it easy to take these beautiful over-ear headphones anywhere. Combine the serious audio quality of the PRO40s with their undeniable flash, and you’ve got a likely winner. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to see celebrities like Cristiano Ronaldo embrace their PRO40s. The 28-yearold Ronaldo, arguably the best soccer player in the world, was recently seen with his personal pair of PRO40s while traveling with his team, Real Madrid. On the band’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Public Enemy’s DJ Lord rocked out in a MUNITIO t-shirt,

sporting none other than the PRO40s while spinning vinyl for his fans. Even Kobe Bryant owns MUNITIO; a quick Internet search and you’ll find lots of images of him enjoying his NINES. MUNITIO may be a young company, but with the success of its now iconic NINES and the new PRO40 over-ear headphones, it is an undeniable standout in what’s otherwise a very crowded and homogeneous market segment. Thanks to a singular combination of premium materials, signature urban styling and amazing sound quality, MUNITIO is uniquely positioned to be a player with a promising future. Hear this: once you’ve experienced MUNITIO headphones, you’ll be a fan for life.

CITY LOOKS

Redefining the Barbershop Business WRITTEN BY

BRANDON GOLDSTEIN

Brothers Jeff and Joe Agnello are cutting a path to success with one great-looking head of hair at a time 22

HOLIDAY 2013

M

any (women) will tell you that a good men’s haircut is a dime a dozen. While they often put hundreds of dollars into their flowing locks, they expect you to go to the discount hair place because “your hair is short and easy to do.” Yet while women can often style their hair in different ways—sometimes it seems like a new look every single day of the week—we men typically have the same style every single day. That is why it is so important we receive a high quality cut. Luckily, the barbershops of old, where you got both a quality haircut and a genuinely warm and comfortable experience, are making their big return. The newest to hit Bergen County is City Looks in Oradell, and its owners are making sure their presence is felt… one good-looking head of hair at a time. This is not City Looks’ first location. In November 2009, Jeff Agnello, at the ripe age of 19, opened up his first shop in Little Falls. “I always had a passion for it [cutting hair],” Jeff said. “At first, I didn’t really think it was the right way to go, but I was doing it for

my friends and they were loving it, so it was the perfect combination of passion and skill.” While continuing to “practice” on his friends, Jeff made his way through cosmetology school, passing the licensing exam on his first try. After a brief stint working for a local Passaic County barbershop, Jeff knew it was time to be on his own. “The shops I worked in were all trying to relive the ’70s. The inside was run down and only old men wanted to get their haircuts there,” Jeff explained. “I knew I could start a shop where young guys would want to go. Fathers could bring their sons, and it was a clean, fresh-looking place.” However, Jeff, a novice in the entrepreneurial world, soon realized he would need an assist. He turned to his older brother Joe, manager of a local bank, to help him with the business and marketing side of things. The two formed a formidable force, rooted in family and now extending into successes beyond. Only weeks after Jeff opened the doors to his Little Falls location, the word had spread and people were already coming from surrounding Totowa and Wayne to get a stylish haircut from Jeff or one of his other professionally trained barbers. They knew they had struck gold with the perfect combination of a clean-looking interior, family-friendly pricing, and, finally, a haircut a man could take pride in. By age 20, Jeff found himself with one successful barbershop up and running. He and Joe knew the timing was right to expand City Looks to an additional venue, and their location scouting began. Faster than you can say, “just a trim, please,” the pair had cut a deal on a likely spot on Kinderkamack Road in Oradell. Soon, a beautiful new City Looks banner hung above their small shop window; inside four classic leather barber chairs aimed towards the door warmly invited clients to sit, relax and get ready to enjoy some expert grooming. “Oradell had all the qualities we

were looking for. A nice little town, next to larger towns like Paramus, that don’t really have what we offer,” Joe noted. He’s right. There is currently nothing in Oradell, River Edge, Hackensack, Ridgewood or even Paramus, which offers what City Looks has, on a main and convenient road no less. One of City Looks’ specialties is the Hot Towel Shave. Women have

their spa days; men have their hot towel shaves. This past year I had the opportunity to take my father for what would be my first (It took a few years to grow a beard) hot towel shave, and his first in more than 20 years. After all, it was a dying art until recently. The day ended with us having shared a great bonding experience and sporting faces smoother than a baby’s… you know what. Continued on pg. 24

CITY LOOKS

Redefining the Barbershop Business

Continued from pg.23

Jeff and Joe have gotten the environment just right. They weren’t looking to create another highpriced trendy men’s salon. Instead, they wanted a welcoming feel that still offered all the incredible amenities those salons boast. “We are constantly educating our staff on the newest hair trends,” Jeff emphasized. “We don’t want you to leave our shop feeling like you got the same boring old haircut. We want you to feel like a million bucks, and not like you just spent it.” City Looks wasn’t just a name, but a mindset. Jeff and Joe wanted people to feel they could just casually walk into the shop during a stroll down Oradell’s main street and be greeted with service and a smile. “Come in and see what we can do. Bring your son. You won’t leave disappointed.” The look of the place was no mistake, either. Flat screen TVs entertain patrons with the game or sports high-

lights. On a daily basis, you’ll hear conversations about what the Yankees will do next or whether the Giants will make a run at the playoffs. “We wanted men to feel relaxed and at peace; to kind of have their own sanctuary here,” Jeff said. At the end of the day, their warm regard for everyone who comes through their doors starts with their own family. Jeff looks up to his older brother, and Joe only has the kindest and most sincere things to say about Jeff. “The fact that Jeff has been able to do this at such a young age is not only admirable but gives hope to younger kids. Jeff is like a big brother to a lot of the kids that come through these doors.” Rule 1, business never gets in the way of their relationship. Opening and running your own business

carries with it enormous stress at times, but Jeff and Joe don’t let that affect the strong bond they’ve built throughout their lives. Instead, that brotherhood transforms the feel of their barbershop business, creating a warm and genuine atmosphere. Take a minute to talk with any of the barbers in the shop, and you’ll feel like you’ve known them for years. These two locations are only the beginning for City Looks. With the support of their friends and family, and the happiness of their patrons, they promise to continue to grow and expand to offer their unique services to more and more areas. “I won’t stop until I get to cut Donald Trump’s hair,” Jeff exclaimed. “Nobody’s gotten it right yet, so it’s time to show him what City Looks can do.”

For some real heavyweight drama, check out this excerpt from the new dual biography of boxing brothers Leon and Michael Spinks.

ust about every sports fan over the age of forty remembers boxing champions Leon and Michael Spinks. The brothers were the first to win gold medals in the same Olympic games (1976); they also were the first brothers to both win the heavyweight championship. (Leon beat The Greatest, Muhammad Ali, in 1978; Michael beat the unbeatable Larry Holmes seven years later.) In the new dual biography, ONE PUNCH FROM THE PROMISED LAND: LEON SPINKS, MICHAEL SPINKS, AND THE MYTH OF THE HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE, authors John Florio and Ouisie Shapiro revisit the Spinks brothers and uncover stories never before made public. It’s all here—the big paydays, the high living, the backroom deals. This book is the definitive story of Leon and Michael Spinks, and a cross-examination of heavyweight boxing in 20th-century America.

HOLIDAY 2013

The following excerpt brings the reader behind the scenes in Atlantic City on June 27, 1988, as Michael Spinks prepares to enter the ring for a title match with the young, undefeated, and unmerciful Mike Tyson. By 10:30 p.m., Convention Hall in Atlantic City was buzzing, as reporters, cameramen, and spectators waited for the fighters to make their entrances. But neither Michael nor Tyson had come out of his dressing room. The HBO commentators first attributed the delay to a problem with the wraps on Tyson’s hands, and then to a standoff between Spinks and Tyson (ostensibly caused by Spinks’s insistence that he was the real champion and, as such, should enter the ring last). Had the public been privy to the actual goings-on, the 4-1 odds might have swung even more in Tyson’s favor. Tyson cornerman Steve Lott remembers the scene. “Butch Lewis came running into the locker room saying, ‘No one was here to watch the hands being wrapped. And I demand that the hand wraps be taken off Mike Tyson and put back on.’ At that point the commissioner, Larry Hazzard, was called from ringside. There was a big brouhaha between Butch Lewis and Larry Hazzard.” As New Jersey Boxing Commissioner, Hazzard was responsible for restoring order. “[Tyson] was getting pissed off,” Hazzard recalls. “They were doing some construction in the back of the dressing room and there was a wall that had sheetrock and [Tyson] put his fist right through the fuckin’ sheetrock.” Tyson: “Butch Lewis was trying to antagonize me before the fight and that wasn’t gonna work. He was saying to unwrap the gloves, saying that nobody was here from his side [when my hands were wrapped]. He was trying to get me upset, get me frustrated. I may have said some foul words. He fed my fire. I’m a street guy, he’s a street guy, so we were talking street stuff back and forth. Yes, I did [punch a hole in the wall].” Why did Butch Lewis do it? Why enrage Tyson? The answer wasn’t in Tyson’s dressing room. It was in Michael’s. Emanuel Steward had flown to Atlantic City to see the fight and went to check on Michael. “I went into his dressing room; they couldn’t even get him to come out, he was so scared. He was a nervous wreck, really freaking out. Leon wouldn’t have given a damn. Leon was a free spirit. [Michael] didn’t have the personality to come out.” Not until 11:20 did Michael finally make his way to the ring, snaking through a celebrity-studded audience that included Norman Mailer, Jack Nicholson, Warren Beatty, Sean Penn, Madonna, and, of course, Donald Trump. The fighter gave a hesitant wave to the crowd, acknowledging his family and friends. He entered the ring in a gleaming white robe as Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald sang “This Is It” through the PA speakers. Sweat glistened on his cheeks and forehead. He had the look of a rabbit that had just spotted a hunter’s rifle. Boxing writer Royce Feour: “I never saw a fighter entering the ring, and standing in the ring, that looked as scared as Michael Spinks. Never. And I’ve covered fights

since 1965. Never. [Michael] was petrified.” Three minutes later, Tyson entered, naked except for black trunks, black shoes, and red gloves. He charged through the crowd with all the elegance of a military tank. The overhead speakers blared music that was so dark and industrial, it sounded as though the audio man had opened a microphone in a prison sweatshop. Once both fighters were inside the ropes, ring announcer Michael Buffer introduced Muhammad Ali, dressed impeccably in a dark gray suit, pink tie, and oversized eyeglasses. Ali, presumably, still loved the spotlight, but his face was locked into a frozen stare as he inched his way to the center of the ring. He waved to the crowd with a jerking right hand that seemed to be controlled by an amateur puppeteer. His mouth, which once operated in only one mode, fast-forward, now struggled to get out of pause. He leaned into Michael’s ear with some barely audible last-minute instructions. “Stick and move,” he mumbled. Butch Lewis stood nearby, wearing what was now his trademark “chocolate tuxedo”: white pants, white jacket, white bowtie, no shirt. Next, Buffer introduced the fighters, a ritual that lasted more than two minutes. Eventually, the bell rang.

CHARITY GUIDE

T

he hustle and bustle of daily life can sometimes make us lose sight of what is truly important. It’s the holiday season that provides us with that annual reminder to come back down to Earth. While surrounded by our family and friends, we reflect on the great times we spent together in the past, and revel in the traditions that will keep us close many years into the future. The holiday season has also become synonymous with giving. Each year, millions of people open their hearts, and their wallets, for causes that affect some deeply, and others not at all. Our extraordinary charitable generosity is just another trait that distinguishes Americans from so much of the rest of the world. As we volunteer our time, or donate to those who need it the most, we help shape and change the lives of people we may never even meet. Here, we provide a small, select list of the many charitable foundations working to make each day better for so many people. It is our hope you will be inspired by one or more of them to offer them your support.

American Urology Association (AUA) Foundation Focus: Urologic diseases Website: www.auafoundation.org The AUA is the nation’s leading urologic health charity, promoting research, advocacy and education in an effort to ultimately cure urologic diseases. Now, if you’re a little unclear about exactly what urology is, don’t be ashamed. Urology deals with more than just the diseases of the male and female urinary tract; it also focuses on the male reproductive organs so you can rejoice in the knowledge that someone is looking after you-know-what. The AUA is a premier and mainstream organization involved across the whole spectrum of urology advocacy. One of its key areas of advocacy is expressed in its “Let Your Voice Be Heard” campaign, which urges the public to press Congress to support the Training and Research in Urology (TRU) Act.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Focus: Helping all children achieve success in life Website: www.bbbsnj.org The mission of this organization is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Homes Fit for Heroes Focus: War veterans Website: www.homesfitforheroes.net The group was founded on the following principles: that as Americans we have a duty to support those that fight with honor and make sacrifices to protect the freedoms that we so often take for granted; that there is no greater honor than to extend a hand to a wounded soldier and his family; that if we want the United States of America to be the greatest country in the world we too need to sacrifice and be custodians of freedom. Accordingly, the Homes Fit for Heroes Foundation was established to provide wounded Special Operations warriors with shelter from the storm allowing them to recover from their injuries with the comfort, dignity and respect they deserve.

Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation (SKTCF) Focus: Testicular cancer Website: seankimerling.org Established in memory of Sean Kimerling, an Emmy Award-winning anchor of CW11 sports and pre-game announcer for the New York Mets whose life was cut stark short in his prime, the SKTCF is dedicated to raising awareness of testicular cancer and highlighting the importance of self-examination. The Foundation has received praise for its unique social marketing approaches, including some pretty hilarious viral videos (type “Check your balls” in YouTube for further clarification). The message is clear and simple: No man should die from testicular cancer. Perform self-examinations often and get over the stigma of seeing your doctor. It might just save your life.

Zero Focus: Prostate cancer Website: zerocancer.org ZERO, The Project to End Prostate Cancer, takes a hard stance on prostate cancer; hence the name. The idea: ZERO means zero prostate cancer deaths, zero prostate cancer cases and for those with the disease, a zero PSA. With its hard-line message comes aggressive campaigning, which includes ZERO’s Drive Against Prostate Cancer campaign, the only national mobile screening program for prostate cancer. Be sure to keep your eye out for the ZERO Drive vehicles; they’re sleek 39-foot mobile screening buses offering no-appointment prostate screening exams. Best of all: The Drive buses feature flat-screen TVs with satellite cable for your viewing pleasure while you wait. It’s the only way to go!

MATT SIMMS Another star in Bergen County’s football family WRITTEN BY

BRANDON GOLDSTEIN

I

t was October 29th. Two days earlier, Matt Simms was brought in to lead the New York Jets for the last 13 minutes of a very lopsided game. The team had been pounded mentally and physically. Down 49-9, after Geno Smith had thrown two pick-six, Matt was brought in. After a great preseason that landed him on the 53-man roster, this was his real NFL debut. “I got into that huddle, saw Nick Mangold and Willie Colon, and it was just a proud moment. Here I am with these great football players. I didn’t want to let them down, so I just played as hard as I could.” Raised in a family that had already bred two NFL quarterbacks (his dad, Phil, and brother, Chris), Matt still sat before me as humble as could be. With the QB gene coursing through his veins, Matt is still incredibly grateful for where he is right now. I’ve commented quite frequently

40

HOLIDAY 2013

about the level of pomposity that surrounds many twentysomething men and women living in Bergen County. Their parents gave them a great life, and in doing so, frequently created monsters of classless pretentiousness. Prior to sitting down with Matt Simms, son of football legend Phil Simms, I was worried he would be just another one of these intolerably self-important Bergen County snobs. Yet after walking away from my twohour talk with Matt, who is currently number two QB on the New York Jets’ depth chart behind Geno Smith, I was amazed by how grounded, kind and enthusiastic this young man is. Raised in Franklin Lakes, Matt has fond memories of throwing around a baseball with his father (or “Big Phil” as he endearingly calls his dad) at the field right behind their house. “My father was drafted in the MLB as well,” Matt tells us. “I was 10 years old and he was zipping them past me. I felt like I was throwing my

back out just trying to make contact.” Matt’s earliest football memories? Being waterboy for his brother Chris’s team at Ramapo High School. Phil, who put down his Giants jersey and retired from the NFL when Matt was only four, began coaching a lot of Matt’s rec or traveling sports leagues. “I knew my father more as an announcer than a football player,” Matt admitted. Meanwhile, Matt’s brother, Chris, eight years his senior, was teaching young Matt a little something about toughness. “Pickup games in the backyard weren’t so easy. Chris didn’t take it easy on me.” These games did, however, prepare him for his days at Don Bosco, when Brian Cushing of Bergen Catholic was chasing him around the gridiron. “Don Bosco was great. In my life, there have been a lot of brotherhoods. The NFL is a brotherhood, a

The Simms family

close-knit group of guys all playing at the highest level. Then there are the Jets; they are another brotherhood. You spend all day and all night with these guys, with the common goal of grinding out wins every Sunday. Then, there is my QB brotherhood. I’m sitting watching video with Geno Smith, Mark Sanchez; David Garrard is here now and Brady Quinn just left. And we all bond over our role on the team.” The first real brotherhood of all, started with his football team at Don Bosco. “That’s when I really got serious about football. Coach Toal, he is the best there is. He is a man’s man, and I owe a lot to him. He has definitely been a big part of why I’m here now.” Matt flourished behind the center during his years at Bosco. For three years there, he threw over 6,000 yards and 60 touchdowns as a starter. As a sophomore, he took the team to the national championship but lost to Brian Cushing, Jim Drey (both of whom currently play in the NFL) and the rest of the Bergen Catholic Crusaders. During Matt’s junior year, they traveled to Giant Stadium once again, but weren’t able to come up with the victory. His senior year, however, he helped bring home the coveted NJ State Championship trophy to Don Bosco. Matt has had a lot of mentors. His father and brother obviously played a huge part in developing his skills set and in keeping him grounded. His mother, Diana, was the backbone of the family, always making sure everyone was in the right place at the right time, and his sister, Deidre, well, she was Matt’s biggest critic. “She’d call me up, even after this Sunday’s game, and tell me what I did wrong, what I could’ve done better. She definitely keeps me in check.” Matt also attributes a lot of his high school success to Nunzio Campanile, Bergen Catholic’s head coach. “I love coach Nunzio, but now Coach Toal gets mad if I go down to Bergen Catholic to visit him at a practice, just to say hello,” Matt said a chuckle, explaining what’s become somewhat of a sore subject. “He’s a great man and a fantastic coach, but I’m doing my best to stay away from him for now.” Matt, only 25 years old, has already dealt with the ups and downs of adversity in his young career. After sitting out all of last season with no NFL teams interested in him. After several workouts with the Jets, they invited him to camp for the 2013 season. At the time, he joined four other QBs: Mark Sanchez, the embattled veteran; Geno Smith, the shiny new rookie; Greg McElroy and David Garrard. Matt has the utmost respect for all four. “Geno has been so nice to me, and he really doesn’t have to be. It’s been really great. He’s a great guy.” Given the opportunity, Matt shined in his preseason playing time. One of his favorite moments was when they played against the Giants. Continued on pg. 42

“Obviously because of my father, everyone thinks I’m a Giants fan. Now I’m playing for the Jets, but since it really was more about the ‘hometown kid’ I could tell everyone was cheering for me.” Matt goes on to tell a story: “After we scored the TD I ran to the sideline and was just ecstatic jumping up and down. I look into the stands— and it was a Giants home game— and there was just this one guy looking at me in his Giants jersey giving me the thumbs up. It was just an incredible moment, and it’s so great to be playing in my hometown.” Due to Mark Sanchez’s injury, and his play landing him on the 53man roster over Greg McElroy and David Garrard, Matt had shot to the role of number two on the depth chart, behind rookie Geno Smith.

42

HOLIDAY 2013

“It was just a whirlwind but I don’t have the time to pay attention to it. I just go in every day and prepare for that moment that they might need me to lead the team. It’s all-consuming.” Many may think that NFL players live a glorious life of parties, but Matt is out to prove them wrong. “Right now, my social life is taking a back seat. I wake up every day, head to Florham Park, try do to whatever I can to help my team win and prepare myself, I go home, sleep, and do the same thing the next day.” You won’t find Matt on Facebook or Twitter, or even playing fantasy football or leading the Jets to the Super Bowl as a starting QB of the Jets in Madden 25 on Xbox. He keeps it simple and stays out of the spotlight. That’s how he likes it.

Of course, after a long day of practice and prep, Matt does find some ways to unwind. “I love movies; I love TV,” Matt said. This led to a conversation of the greats: The Godfather, Goodfellas, Hoosiers, Scarface. He did swear, though, that he does not own any Scarface posters. (Thankfully.) Beyond that, Matt watches the trash TV shows we all love. “American Pickers is great. What will they find? Look at that shiny metal gas sign just rusting away. That’s so cool!” It didn’t take long to see how down-to-earth Matt really is. Let’s face it, everyone would expect Matt to be a pretentious little punk (despite being a towering 6’3”), but he is far from it. He is as normal as it gets. When asked where he likes to eat, Matt exclaimed: “Well, of course there’s Kinchley’s Tavern right next to Don Bosco in Ramsey. I love it there. Then there’s Goffle Grill in Hawthorne. You just can’t go wrong. And If I’m looking for something real nice, I’ll check out Houston’s in Hackensack.” Matt is only one twisted ankle from becoming the starting QB of the New York Jets. Yet he never behaves as if he thinks he deserves to be there. Indeed, he seems more surprised and humble than anything else. “I’m sitting next to Geno, and Mark, this group of phenomenal coaches, and just wondering if this is even real. I take it day by day because you never know what will happen, but I’m sure going to give it my all while I’m there.” Whether his personal journey lies with the Jets or elsewhere, Matt has shown the skills and talents to be a starting QB in the NFL, and he already has mastered the diplomatic attitude necessary to deal with the people inside these organizations as well as those outside. Good luck, Matt! Just know that all of Bergen County is rooting for you all the way.

EAT LIKE A MAN 5 Alarm BBQ’s Curtis Barnes dishes out award-winning BBQ up and down the East Coast. Curtis Barnes gives us the inside scoop for his Smoked Barbecue Sticky Wings. Game day will never taste the same!

What you need:

5 lbs. chicken drumettes/wings 2 c. honey 2 c. barbecue sauce (your favorite)

WRITTEN BY

NICK POYNER

M

Prepare a smoker or charcoal grill with charcoal to 250 degrees. Add cherry/apple/pecan (your preference) wood chunks to the hot coals. Place chicken drumettes/wings to grill and let smoke for about 20 minutes. Chicken pieces should have a red color to them from the smoke. Do not allow them to cook fully. Heat peanut oil to 325 degrees in a large saucepan or deep fryer. Place chicken parts in the hot oil until they float. Drain excess oil from chicken. In a large bowl, add the 2 cups of honey to 2 cups of barbecue sauce. Curtis’s preference: Sweet Baby Rays Barbecue Sauce. Toss until evenly covered; serve hot. No need for sour cream or blue cheese dressing; this recipe stands alone.

Step up your game at family barbecues or football parties this season. The perfect wings will serve two purposes: Satisfy your hunger and silence your babbling friend who always has to talk through the whole game. Visit 5alarmbackyardbbq.com to find out more about Curtis and 5 Alarm BBQ, or to have him cater your next Super Bowl party.

TOP 10 SCOTCHES UNDER $60 A small gift of scotch goes a long way WRITTEN BY

JOSEPH “WHISKY JOE” GRATKOWSKI

S

ome people are harder to buy gifts for than others. For instance, we all have one or two ultra-picky relatives who will turn up their noses at any article of clothing that’s even the barest shade off in color, motivating you to be sure to include gift receipts with any and all purchases. Fortunately, whisky lovers are not as difficult to shop for! Generally speaking, scotch, bourbon and world whisky enthusiasts are eager to try a new and unfamiliar bottle, and almost any selection will be well received. Besides, much like a respectful person cleaning his or her plate at an unappealing meal, whisky lovers will gladly take on the task of consuming the bottle, even if it may not be an immediate favorite. I love fielding questions from people about purchase or gift suggestions. Their queries range from the vague “I’d like to get him/her something special for his/her birthday” to the more specific “My spouse/friend likes Jack Daniels. What is something unique that I can give as a gift?” Well, there are many options, and the task of choosing the perfect bottle can seem daunting especially in the face of the constantly expanding market. That expansion has led to a whisky world rid-

dled with trends, like the fact that craft distilleries are popping up everywhere, including New Jersey’s first distillery since Prohibition (Jersey Artisan Distillers). However, I think my favorite trend right now is the tearing down of some old stereotypes. Whisky is no longer just a “man’s” drink, and it is no longer only reserved for rich old men in a stuffy back room somewhere. Women are truly starting to gravitate towards versatile whisky as their drink of choice, either neat or in cocktails, which is wonderful. The more the merrier! Scotch is not just for men, and it is not only for the rich. It is one of the most social beverages imaginable, with over a decade of history in virtually every pour. Times are tough for many of us, but time is also short. There is something to be said for enjoying a few of the finer things in life, and to slowing down a bit in this fast-paced, instant messaging kind of world. With that end in mind, I am going to list my top ten scotches to help you stop and smell the roses. (Or should I say, smell the scotches?) In an effort to be realistic, I will keep my choices to those priced under $60. After all, while there are some fantastic whiskies that cost hundreds of dollars a bottle, not all of us can pull that off. Luckily, even in the $60 and under price range, the options are as vast as the ocean. Here is a select list that should meet the needs of both your discerning scotch connoisseur buddy and fledgling newbie without putting your wallet through the wringer.

oak—married together in an Oregon Pine Solera vat. The idea here is that the vat never gets drained below half way during bottling, so that theoretically there is some very old whisky in here. Long story short: it is a refreshing fruit and cinnamon blast, with a solid oak backbone to earn your respect. This is a bottle to spend some time with in order to nurture the depth of its Continued on pg. 58

BALVENIE 12 DOUBLEWOOD

This is one of the first scotches that I recommend to folks who are either new to scotch or looking to move up the ladder from blends to single malts. The Balvenie expressions are notoriously honeyed in flavor, leading to a smooth and mellow experience. There is a consistency to the Balvenie product line that I love; it has an air of class to it, but is still “working class,” if that is possible for a drink. This is a testament to how truly handcrafted their whiskies are from inception to fruition. This one will treat your palate to a wide range of flavors from the two casks (Sherry & Ex-Bourbon), without any smoky peat to distract you.

GLENFIDDICH 15

This multi-award winning scotch is made unlike any other. Created using the Solera Vat method, this scotch is a combination of three casks—sherry, bourbon, new

essences and delights. An absolute steal!

TALISKER 10

The mighty Talisker is the only scotch from the Isle of Skye, and she is a beauty. This one is for a little bit more of a seasoned veteran of whisky, with a peppery smoky kick. Much like the environment it comes from, this scotch is rugged and bold, with notes of sea air. It is worth noting that James Bond (in Ian Fleming’s books) didn’t drink martinis, shaken or otherwise. He drank Talisker. If the mood grabs you, don’t be shy, tap into your inner 007 and prepare for a wild ride.

LAGAVULIN 16

This flagship scotch for the Lagavulin Distillery is an outstanding dram. Hailing from the salty sea region known as Islay, this is a complex beast, and a true masterpiece. There is the trademark peat smoke here, but the real beauty is in a subtle sweetness…plus the iodine and seaweed that comes through truly shows the exposure to the coastline and the extremely slow process this spirit has gone through. I would imagine this is what Neptune’s smoking jacket smells like!

DALWHINNIE 15

Labeled the “gentle spirit,” it is one of the older whiskies on this list. A great starter whisky, this one is balanced and gentle, a very easy drinker.

There is just enough smoke to keep it interesting. It is very reasonably priced for its age, and I have yet to hear anyone find it offensive. Although it is not overly complex, it is a safe bet if you need to buy a single malt for someone.

LAPHROAIG 10

Another intensely peated scotch, the Laphroaig Distillery has a big cult following, and a solid history. A great deal for the money, this is one of the expressions that many scotch drinkers tend to keep on hands at all times. With a different peat flavor profile than the other Islay-based drams on this list, the salty Laphroaig is one of the best choices for pairing with seafood and a nice fireplace.

BALVENIE 15 SINGLE BARREL

There are not too many single barrel offerings that I can put into this price range, and the idea of one cask yielding 350 unique and unrepeatable bottles is just too good to pass up. One of the higher proofed scotches on this list, this stunner is another outstanding offering from this familyowned and completely handcrafted distillery. Honey and vanilla dominate, along with the omnipresent oak, and it has enough of a backbone to hold up to anything… even, dare I say it, ice. Continued on pg. 60

HIGHLAND PARK 12

In a remote nook off the northern coast of Scotland’s mainland lie the Orkney Islands. Home to Highland Park, a Swiss army knife of a scotch, this one can do it all. Featuring malty sweetness and a floral nose, it is balanced out by a restrained smokiness. This is a great selection for someone who may not have a favorite region yet, and is looking for a bit of everything. Speaking for myself, I am always in the mood for this one.

Whisky Joe, a New Jersey resident with a full-time career in the chemicals industry, is a brand ambassador and whisky enthusiast. He is on twitter @ whiskyjourney, online at www.whiskyjoe.com, and may be reached by e-mail at whiskyjourney@gmail.com.

MACALLAN 12

One of the most well known names in the scotch business is the Macallan. Widely available and well respected, the Macallan 12 is a mainstay of numerous bars and many enthusiasts’ collections. Sherried and rich, this is another solid introductory scotch that may appeal to your sweet tooth. Those who might not be able to swing the hefty price tag of the Macallan 18 and Lindt chocolates will be pleasantly surprised to discover how wonderful it feels to kick back with the Macallan 12 and some Hershey Kisses.

que scotches. Beloved for its notable nose, this distillery is known for its lively aromas and approachable tastes. Very affordable, this 10 is often gift-packaged together with a couple of glasses during the holidays, adding to its allure. Unlike many other spirits, scotch offers such a wide variety of taste spectrums and preferences that you can spend a lifetime trying to narrow down your favorite. Any of the above should really set the groundwork for what could be a magnificent whisky journey of your own. As an added bonus, the shelf life of scotch is measured in years, not months. It’s truly a gift that keeps on giving. Besides, there is never any need for gift receipts.

owadays we are all looking for great indoor entertainment. Most of us are accustomed to watching HDTV, and have become well educated on what’s good and what’s not so good as far as picture quality goes. For many years, 1080p was the standard for a good television set, but those days are over. Sony and many other companies have been investing in 4K technology. 4K technology is here, and here to stay. Many people had concerns about 4K content, and Sony has come up with a great solution. Sony recently launched the Video Unlimited 4K service, the world’s first and only 4K Ultra HD video download service, with access to an expanding library of native 4K Ultra HD feature films and TV shows. Beginning with a selection of more than 70 full length native 4K Ultra HD feature films and TV shows from Sony Pictures Entertainment and other notable production houses, Video Unlimited 4K will offer customers the option to rent and purchase content for download on Sony’s 4K Ultra HD Media Player

The owners, two couples and lifelong friends, Andrew and Nicole Papataros and Paul and Andrea Lauterback, are proud of what they have created and excited about getting their third year of ownership into full swing … FORE! “Virtual golf has expanded golf into a 12-month sport,” said Paul. The Players Club’s high season runs from December to April and there is no question that the golf leagues and

regulars keep coming back for the relaxed atmosphere, friendly owners and BYOB policy. At its peak, a weekend day averages 100 to 120 golfers and a weekday brings in 50 to 70 golfers with reservations made two to three days in advance to secure a simulator. The Players Club’s six PGA simulators by aboutGolf allow golfers to consistently improve their game. Golf enthusiasts know that these are the same simulators featured on The Golf Channel’s The Golf Fix hosted by Michael Breed. The PGA simulator features 3Trak, a 3D machine vision technology that combines both club and ball data to provide plenty of feedback, including the launch an-

gle, the spin and the club head speed. “I’ll never forget the day they put in the first sim,” Andrea recalled. “The gentleman who was installing the simulators let us know that he was finished, and Paul and I were like kids in a candy shop, racing as fast as we could to get here. It was cool from the minute we saw it.” With a touch-screen control panel, golfers can choose to play a ninehole or 18-hole course, hit on the driving range or play one of the newly added mini-golf courses. Golfers can also simulate different weather and wind conditions, making the course as realistic as possible. Both male and female golf

leagues have become regulars at The Players Club, but the owners are always happy to see couples and families playing together and new golfers becoming accustomed to the game. “We have couples that come in with wine and cheese baskets,” Andrew mentioned. “Literally, they come in and grab two tables, they set up and play golf, and drink and eat wine and cheese.” Each simulator has its own cooler; snacks can be purchased and golfers can order food from local restaurants. Golfers can store their clubs within the facility, golf rentals are available upon request and gift certificates can be purchased on the

club’s website (njindoorgolf.com). “We want to be like that Irish pub in Westwood, where everyone knows the food is good, the beer is good and it’s been around for 50 years,” said Paul. “We know our customers’ names when they walk in the door, which is an amazing feeling,” Nicole added. Since its opening in 2011, The Players Club has maintained a close relationship with the Garden State Golf Academy (GSGA) in Paramus. The GSGA’s pros, PGA professionals from the top country clubs in the area, are available for private lessons and run The Players Club summer camp each year. Titleless Performance Institute (TPI) Fitness, golfspecific health fitness and swing advice is also available through the Garden State Golf Academy. “They are great guys,” Andrea said about GSGA’s pros. “I was really impressed by the way they relate to kids and to adults. They have a great diversity.” Andrea, a mother of two and physical education teacher, understands the diverse benefits of golf. “I think about the health benefits of it—getting up, being active and the muscle development,” she explained. “There are so many good qualities that kids get out of it.” “All of our kids have their clubs in the back,” mentioned Andrew, referring to his three children and the two Lauterback children. “So when they are not playing one of their other sports, or have some downtime, they come over.” The Players Club is proud to note that three of the owners are lifelong golf players and their employees are either past or present golfers, some having received top recognition within the state. “The women from the Hackensack Country Club were in here a lot this past winter and the women from Ridgewood Country Club came in with the female pro,” Nicole noted. “They come in and like to play and don’t feel intimidated. They come in and play during the day, go have their lunch and then pick up their kids.” “We both have seen our game Continued on pg. 94

improve by continuing to play during the winter,” said Andrew. The Players Club brings more than 50 courses to New Jersey golfers rain or shine, with seven more on the way. The Bay Harbor Links & Quarry (Michigan) course is the favorite of both Andrew and Paul, though they had to admit that the TPC Sawgrass (Florida) course is the most played. Premier courses such as Pebble Beach Golf Links (California), The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island (South Carolina) and The Old Course at St. Andrews (Scotland) allow golfers to play on legendary courses they may not have access to otherwise. The 8,000-square foot space also has proven to be a great venue for private events and the owners have adopted the “what happens here stays here” attitude, especially when it comes to bachelor parties. The

space is so versatile that it can be easily transformed to meet the needs of Bar Mitzvahs, a 70th birthday party, bachelor parties and fundraisers. When golf is not being played, the simulators can be utilized as a 15-foot wide projection screen and stream anything from the Internet to Pay-Per-View, display PowerPoint presentations or a video montage. Going into its third year, The Players Club is making its mark within the golf community and continues to give back through fundraisers, such as the one they hosted last year to benefit the Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund. Whether you are looking to improve your game, swing a club for the first time or introduce your children to golf, The Players Club in Paramus is the place to get on the green. No matter what the weather!

The Details Pricing: $50 per hour on weekends, $45 per hour for weekdays No limit on how many players can occupy a simulator. Discount cards can be utilized; the “Birdie” is the most popular. $380 Birdie Card (10 hours of simulator time) $715 Eagle Card (20 hours of simulator time) $995 Ace Card (30 hours of simulator time) Club rentals are available upon request and storage is available for golf clubs. Shoe Love

We’re talking some serious sole obsession! WRITTEN BY

TESSA VIOLE

omen are not the only ones who are crazy about shoes. Men can also kick up their heels when it comes to footwear, especially given the larger and more versatile offerings now available to them. Take the chukka boot, for instance. It is an ankle-length, flat-heeled boot (either with or without laces) that can serve as a stylish option for a casual outing during the day, in the workplace or for steppping out for a night on the town. Since the chukka boot is a wardrobe staple for many men, it’s popular with various upscale brands, each of which has put its own distinctive spin on the boot. Here are my top nine choices:

1. UGG Australia UGGs are not just for women, guys! The Westly Nubuck Leather Chukka Boot is a fabulous casual shoe. The neutral color will look great with a pair of denim jeans or nice trousers. Plus, it has leather and shearling lining to keep your feet warm during the winter months. Photo: Saks Fifth Avenue

2. Cole Haan The Air Colton Winterized Chukka Boot by Cole Haan is a dressier alternative, and its color blocking detail (it comes with an option of red or blue) adds an extra fashion-forward element. This shoe also has soles designed for cold weather, so braving the snow and ice will be a cinch. Photo: Nordstrom

3. Kenneth Cole The Aww Chucks Chukka Boot by Kenneth Cole is another extremely fashion-forward choice. As scores of fashion designers and fashionistas have embraced the “ombre” or “dip-dyed” look (most popularly seen for women’s hair color), the trend has started to be seen on the runways of New York City and Paris. So why limit it to only the beauty arena and why not bring it to clothing and accessories? And that’s precisely what Kenneth Cole has done with this boot. An added style bonus: The subtle gradient effect works particularly well for this type of shoe. Photo: Nordstrom

4. Calvin Klein

5. Prada

Similar to the UGG Australia chukka boot previously mentioned, the Firenze Chukka Boot by Calvin Klein is casual chic at its best. Available in a polished grey color, it’s a go-to staple to any wardrobe. Just pair with a black sweater and medium wash jeans, and you’re set to go on your way.

The Suede Chukka Boot by Prada will take you from casual to dressy with a minimum of fashion fuss. An ultra-sophisticated color choice for men, the boot’s brown suede shade offers a softer alternative to basic black. Photo: Nordstrom

Photo: Nordstrom

6. Jimmy Choo

7. Prada

Jimmy Choo is another designer jumping on the color blocking bandwagon. What distinguishes this version from Cole Haan’s chukka is the addition of the color blocking to the shoelaces. This gives it a fun look, which fits equally well for casual social settings or laid-back work environments.

One of the sleekest and dressiest pairs of chukka boots out there is from Prada. While they do not have “chukka” in the product name, they definitely have the look of them. Prada’s interpretations are slip-ons; they’re perfect to step into for work or to make an understated fashion statement for almost any winter social occasion.

Photo: Nordstrom

Photo: Saks Fifth Avenue

8. Salvatore Ferragamo

9. rag & bone

The Studio Suede Chukka Boots by Salvatore Ferragamo are one of the best chukka alternatives for the workplace. They look polished and sophisticated. The contrast of darker to lighter shades of brown in the laces adds a nice touch. Another special feature: The sole is made of rubber, making the bottoms better able to withstand snow or rain damage.

Mirroring the look of sneakers, these chukka boots are wonderfully suited for any casual outing or informal gathering. They come in a pleasing light brown, which makes them a good daytime choice, as well as infusing a vintage feel to your look. Photo: Saks Fifth Avenue

Project

Redefining the West Village one sip and bite at a time WRITTEN BY

JUSTIN DAVIDSON

henever I pass through the Village—East or West—I tend to get a little misty-eyed. Each minute detail evokes one memory or another of my college days. I met up with my fellow diner and classmate around the basketball courts at West Fourth Street. We were headed to a new restaurant on West Eighth Street, and it dawned on us that we had no real memories of this location. We couldn’t remember one single thing that stood out on the stretch between Fifth and Sixth Avenue. Pick a block in the Village, and my diner and I could give you a recommendation of a place to eat— greasy spoon or upscale. Mac and Cheese? Ukrainian? Middle Eastern? Mario Batali? The Village has it all. For a while, however, this stretch had nothing. Now, it does, in a nice, two-story place called The Greenwich Project. The Greenwich Project gives off a trendy but welcoming vibe when you first go in. The first floor feels homey and intimate. It’s a place where patrons can toast to the end (or halfway point) of the work week with an elegantly crafted cocktail like the Brick House, made with clove-infused bourbon and “red hot” syrup. With a small plates menu, the downstairs eating area also makes for a great place to grab a drink with the missus, while not filling up

too much before a night out. Chef Carmine Di Giovanni has created a different menu for upstairs diners. With wooden floors, tin ceilings and pop art hanging on the walls, the upstairs area could easily be mistaken for a SoHo loft, had the lights been on. But the upstairs, too, is cozy, while still feeling chic. Candles help set the mood for a great dining experience. The pear salad was a fantastic way to begin the meal—fresh and fruity, with some pomegranate seeds. Roquefort cheese and some spiced walnuts give the dish a unique flavor. The two pasta dishes on the menu are exceptional. First off, the house-made cavatelli. Corn flavors it with perfect seasonal sweetness, while pecorino and basil chili flakes give this dish a nice kick. I could have eaten it all day. Fideo squid ink. Yes, sounds interesting, doesn’t it? Served with prawns and a pimenton aioli, this is a pasta dish unlike any I’ve ever had. Fideo isn’t something that I see very often, and when coupled with squid ink, well, my interest was piqued, to say the least. It’s a bit on the salty side, but in the best possible way, and with the ink, it’s dark as night when it’s all mixed together. Ten points for presentation. I loved it. For entrees, we split the pork belly and a dish of scallops. The pork belly was decadent. It’s very, very rich. If you’re watching your figure, this is not for you, but if you’re looking to try a different take on Porky Pig, and aren’t into counting calories, then proceed to pass go. I’ve recently grown to love scallops, and this plate was excellent. The scallops are masterfully seared. Pork belly lardons, squash and a red curry complete the plate, making each bite a great combination of land and sea. The red curry was something I especially enjoyed. I love spicy food, but not when it’s overbearing. The curry created the perfect marriage of spice and flavor. You can still appreciate the unique flavor, while maintaining a great bite of seafood. Small doughnuts, with two bowls for dipping, completed the excellent meal. In one, there was salted caramel, while crème anglaise filled the other. Not too greasy, thankfully, as we were sufficiently stuffed. Still, I found myself sopping up the contents of each with these little fried pieces of dough, savoring every last bite. Perhaps I was turning into a pig, having eaten so much of it already. You are what you eat, right? I kid, but damn was that good. After the meal, we headed downstairs to the bar for a nightcap. The place was filled with the later crowd. I had a New York Sour—bourbon, lemon, egg white and red wine. Like many of the drinks, and dishes on the menu, it was something I hadn’t had before, and something I won’t find anywhere else. It’s drinks and dishes like what I had that will make this restaurant a lynchpin on this block and a destination for those searching for the modern New York dining experience.

The Rise of the

Stylish Man

Men’s emerging style, as told by a woman making it happen WRITTEN BY

ove over women! Men are taking over your product lines, beauty stores and your favorite brands, and this time, it’s not just about maintaining their perms. Hoping to expand their customer base and their profits, companies are creating lines that cater not only to women, but also have male-friendly appeal. Men are becoming more conscious of their looks, fashion and hairstyles, as well as their man-smell. Accordingly, they’re taking more notice of grooming products, everything from pomades to shampoos, from face cleansers to conditioners. These days, colognes, shaving creams and deodorant are no longer the only items on their bathroom counters. And women and barbers couldn’t be happier. As a female barber, I can honestly say, it’s about time. In the past it seemed as though guys would heighten their awareness of their image only when applying for jobs or going on dates. Once they landed the job or the love interest, their grooming habits would shift back down to minimal cruise control. I would even see some men switching to brands of lesser quality as time went on. In an effort to woo these recalcitrant males, companies like Redken, L’Oreal, Matrix and TIGI customized lines exclusively for men. Turns out guys aren’t the simple, easygoing, washing-my-hair-with-body-soap creatures we were led to believe they were. Modern males have evolved into a more complex species, one that now sports trendy haircuts like the ones favored by manly style icons such as David Beckham, Macklemore, George Clooney and Johnny Depp. The Clooneys and Depps of our very own everyday life are increasingly having a ripple effect on the majority of previously clueless guys out there, most of whom never gave the vaguest thought to personalizing their own personas by creating a signature look. Luckily for us, many men are embracing the current male fashion style—a classy and clean-cut look with just the right dash of James Dean rebel cool. Styles dating back to the roaring ’20s are making a pleasant comeback, from head to toe, with a little bit of modern taste. Gentlemen, keep it up! Hopefully, in the future we can look past some of the questionable lapses in style judgment, things like Kanye sunglasses and oversized jeans. (Honestly, guys, what were you thinking?) But all will be forgiven—maybe even that whole best-to-be-forgotten ’80s era—if you just keep the fashion faith. Text Message Timestamps

This feature shows you timestamps in your text messages or iMessages. In the past, you would only get a timestamp every once in awhile. Now, however, you get an exact time that every one of your messages was sent. You can find your list of timestamps by simply swiping message bubbles to the left.

Home Screen Organization

In the past, you were limited to the amount of apps you could put into a folder. Currently, you can place an unlimited number of apps into a single folder, thereby eliminating multiple home screens.

Background App Refresh

One of my personal favorite iOS 7 features is that apps now have the ability to refresh in the background. This means that apps are now able to periodically download data, before you even open the app. While this might sound like a data-hog, Apple includes a feature to allow you to turn off background data refresh for any app. In general, this is a big time saver.

Night Mode for Maps

If you’re like me and use your iPhone as your primary navigation while driving (for reasons like updated traffic information and the latest points of interest), you’ll be happy to know that your iPhone’s bright light will no longer be blinding you while you’re driving at night. The Maps app now automatically dims for night driving.

Block Unwanted Calls & Texts

With iOS 7 you can now block calls and text messages from any number. You can manage your Blocked list by adding and removing contacts as you’d like.

Enhanced Siri Search

Siri has some great improvements. You can now search pictures and find out what your friends are saying on Twitter just by asking Siri. If you’re doing an image search, ask Siri “Show me pictures of cats” and Siri will display photos without leaving the screen.

Global Text Sizing

There is now a universal text size feature that lets you dictate your fonts across apps. We all know about the large Android phones out there. This feature helps Apple give you options while utilizing the crisp, beautiful iPhone display.

Camera Burst Mode

Apple made some great improvements to the camera app on the iPhone 5s. One of my favorites is the ability to take up to 10 frames per second in burst mode. You can then go back and pick which frame you like best and save it as a full resolution image. (This feature is only available on iPhone 5s.)

Create Events from Messages

You’ll notice days and dates are now underlined when you receive them in a text message. If you click on it, you’ll be able to create a calendar event right from within the message. This is very convenient when making plans through text.

Make Siri a Dude

For those tired of Siri’s female voice, in iOS 7 you can change Siri’s voice to a male one. Just to switch things up a bit.

CAN THE ALL-NEW

BMW M6 GRAN COUPE

SURPASS THE GREATNESS

OF ITS LEGACIES? WRITTEN BY

RICHARD POSLUSZNY

WRITTEN BY

RICHARD POSLUSZNY

n 2013 I’ve been lucky to enjoy the opportunity to drive several of BMW’s latest and greatest M cars. For those of you not in the loop, BMW’s M division is the arm of the company that produces the automaker’s highperformance automobiles and, arguably, the products most people lust for in its entire lineup. The BMW M5 and M6 are the M division’s flagship models at the moment. Each boasts the most powerful motor ever fitted to an M production vehicle and while they can be performance monsters, they’re also known for their civility and refinement when needed. For example,

130

HOLIDAY 2013

if you’re navigating through New York’s Meatpacking district with its choppy cobblestone roads, you’ll want a much more tame experience than having some fun on Route 9W. But there’s one problem with each of the standard offerings. The M5 sedan looks a bit too pedestrian when lined up against the Audi RS7, Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG and the Porsche Panamera. These other highperformance, luxury vehicles evoke emotion, and while their designs can be polarizing, they make onlookers feel something. The M6 coupe is the more sporting offering, but if you want to travel with more than one friend, you’ll be hard pressed to find

any compadres that will squeeze into the torture chamber known as the M6 coupe’s back seat. So, what’s the best way to bridge this gap? Simple. Build an M6 fourdoor that will provide the practicality of the M5 sedan, yet still reward drivers with the performance of the more sporting M6 coupe. I introduce you to the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe. Though it seems ridiculous to build this model that sits in the middle of the two, it actually makes a tremendous amount of sense when you compare them dimensionally. The Gran Coupe has the same wheelbase as the M5, but is signif-

icantly less tall than the sedan. In addition, the Gran Coupe is the same width as the M6 coupe and features the same measurements for the front/rear track. This translates into a four-door vehicle that has more rear-seat legroom than the M6 coupe—nearly five more inches— and will handle more than adequately with a center of gravity that’s lower than the M5 sedan and boasts the M6 coupe’s wide “footprint.” And my, my. It’s a looker too. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to folks who adored the M6 Coupe. That’s because the front fascia and rear end treatment is identical, at least to my eyes. Of course the side profile has been adjusted to make room for those rear doors, which it does very well. While some auto designs look too stretched or boast some ungainly proportions, everything in the Gran Coupe looks manifique. Although I would have preferred the side profile to be a bit more slinky and coupe-like, the rear seats had to remain functional for two adults. With two six footers occupying the front and back seat at the same time, room is ample in all directions. Considering this is meant to be more practical than the coupe,

this is critical. Speaking of the interior, this is another area where BMW clearly made sure to differentiate the M6 Gran Coupe from the sedan. It feels exactly like the M6 coupe. Looking around the interior, the design is the same but there are little details that remind you this isn’t your run-ofthe-mill sedan. The front seats have integrated seatbelts, meaning the belts aren’t attached to the B-Pillar, and the seats are placed low to the floor so you feel as though the vehicle was built around you. If a vehicle without a sunroof is a deal breaker for you, then you’re out of luck with the M6 Gran Coupe. That’s because its carbon fiber roof panel doesn’t make it possible. Personally, I like it without the sunroof and, contrary to popular belief, you can never have too much carbon fiber. Likely, if you’re shopping for one of these, you’re happy that BMW put an emphasis on a lightweight roof panel instead of let’s say, adding more weight by including a sunroof. That’s because the Gran Coupe already weighs in at nearly 4,400 pounds. When it comes to performance, weight is the enemy. Equipped with the same engine Continued on pg. 132

and transmission found in its more conventional siblings, the M6 Gran Coupe boasts a bi-turbo V8 producing 560 horsepower and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. There are two gearboxes to choose from, either a seven-speed dual-clutch that acts like an automatic, or a traditional six-speed ‘box with a third pedal. Our test car came with the latter. Zero to 60 comes in 4.3 seconds, but if you equip the Gran Coupe with the dual-clutch transmission, you can shave off 0.2 seconds. To put this into perspective, an all-new manual Porsche 911 Carrera S hits 60 mph in 4.3 seconds. This M6 is a player. But how a vehicle performs in a straight line isn’t the end all, be all. It also needs to work in the twisties. Thankfully, this isn’t a problem for the M6 Gran Coupe. What is staggering, however, is how it feels so much like the M6 Coupe. Body roll

132

HOLIDAY 2013

is slight and there’s plenty of traction while working the switchbacks. As you add more throttle, you feel the car hunker down and when you overdo it—and go sideways—it’s easy to get the car straightened out. Your hair won’t go gray, I promise. Though that was a treat, it didn’t compare to the reactions I got at a local “Cars and Coffee” event held at Ridgewood High School. With all of the rare and amazing autos there (e.g., Mercedes-Benz 300SL “Gullwing,” an original Ford GT40) I wasn’t expecting the blue bombshell to get much attention. It did. There were plenty of “oohs,” and “ahhs” over the beautiful blue paint and the overall design of the M6 Gran Coupe. But, there was one thing that shocked and delighted all of the onlookers: it had a proper manual transmission. Once that shift-it-yourself gearbox was spotted,

even the upper echelon of car owners were impressed and salivating on the once freshly washed car. For me, that’s what makes the trio of BMW M flagship cars stand out from its competitors of the German variety. Power is sent to the rear wheels and you can have one with a third pedal. Soon, autos with upwards of 600 horsepower with a real manual and rear-wheel drive will be dinosaurs. Mark my words, these M cars will be highly sought after. If it were up to me, though, I’d opt for the M6 Gran Coupe over the other two top-of-the-range M cars. With a base price of $115,000, it has everything one could want: it looks and performs like the coupe while having plenty of space in the rear seats for two adults. What gets better than that? A six-speed, but it’s already pretty clear there’s no need to worry about that.

Oh, Deli, Where Art Thou?

In search of the perfect bite WRITTEN BY

T

o borrow a phrase from Shakespeare: pastrami or corned beef; that is the question. I kid, but in a recent moment of introspection, I found myself wondering which of the quintessential deli meats I preferred. During the (hot) dog days of summer, these are the thoughts that pop into my mind. Hey, when you’re out on the beach doing your best lobster impression, your mind tends to wander just a bit. Growing up, my parents quickly realized that my two younger brothers and I didn’t have much patience for synagogue. However, they realized that there was one religious-ish institution we could stomach: the kosher, or kosher style deli. What started as an extra crisp Hebrew National soon evolved into chopped liver and matzo ball soup. Of course, pastrami and corned beef sandwiches would become a staple, and always on rye bread. My dad told me that his assistant recently ordered a pastrami on white at a local deli in my hometown. Well, I guess nobody showed her the way. In the spirit of the high holy days, she is forgiven. Enough of this pastrami on white madness. I’ve been to many delis over the years. Every family trip brought with it the local sampling of deli. Trips into New York meant a pilgrimage to Second Avenue Deli, Katz’s, Carnegie, Ben’s or Barney Greengrass. In Montreal, there was Schwartz’s. Down in

134

HOLIDAY 2013

Miami, land of the grandparents, we ate at the sadly now defunct Rascal House. I distinctly recall a group of elders gathering at the table next to us as my brothers, who were not yet 13, and thus men in the Jewish tradition, asked my parents the definition of several Yiddish terms these men used. Though I was an adult, I heard a few new ones. My parents said they would explain in the car. Perhaps it was my love of pastrami and corned beef that played a factor in my college decision. New York is the holiest of lands when it comes to this type of cuisine. The deli would be my sanctuary.

JUSTIN DAVIDSON

I kept the regulars in a steady rotation, if my budget allowed, which was quite rare. Edelman’s, which was way out in Brooklyn, became a favorite of mine, but unfortunately it closed this past year, right after Passover. The pickle bar, the baseball cards and pictures of Dodgers, Giants, Yankees and Mets that covered the walls will live on in memory. The prices, too, were much more reasonable than those at Katz’s. I don’t really give a shtick if that’s where Harry met Sally. It’s too pricey! And crowded! But the food is good. I realized that I still had not gone to all of them. Stage was still on my list. But that too had closed. Oy vey!

Every slice of meat is prepared with a gentle touch at this Brooklyn eatery.

What was I to do? Naturally, I began to worry. What would become of these treasures? I spoke with Michael Brummer, the owner of Hobby’s in Newark. Michael runs the place with his brother Marc. Their father, Sam, took the place over back in 1962, and the boys have been around the business for quite some time. “When I was ten years old, I was coming in here and cutting pickles at Christmas time,” Michael told me. Michael said that you could absolutely call the deli a dying breed. In Newark, there used to be many more places like this. In fact, there was one across the street from Hobby’s. I wondered about the meats. Michael said they still use the same 50-gallon vats to pickle the corned beef that Sam used when he started out. Both pastrami and corned beef are pickled meats. Corned beef comes from the breast, and pastrami can come from different places, but preferably the navel. After the pickling process, pastrami is then smoked, unlike its cousin, corned beef. I wondered if maybe I should get into the business, but Michael assured me that it wasn’t glamorous. The day we spoke, he was very busy and mentioned that he was running late for one of his daughter’s functions. But some things made it all worth it, like when people keep coming back, or when the staff prepares something special for a woman with dietary restrictions. It means a lot to people. After Hurricane Sandy, the deli was closed for three days. When they opened up, they had a large catering order to fill. The staff worked tirelessly to get it together, and they did. “It was like a symphony,” Michael said. Symphony and delicatessen— that’s something you don’t hear often. I was starting to feel better about these JCCs for the less-health conscious. Then my stomach headed South— as in South Brooklyn Sheepshead Bay, to be precise. My father told me that I once had family there, but all the remnants of my tribe had either moved elsewhere or passed on. In the last episode of No ReservaContinued on pg. 136

tions, Anthony Bourdain featured a little place on Avenue U called Jay and Lloyd’s Kosher Deli, which has been around for 20 years now. It had to be good. Lloyd Lederman invited me down to his deli, which was about an hour or so from my apartment. Lloyd represented the third generation of deli owners. His grandfather came from Eastern Europe, and helped bring kosher food to the east coast more than 90 years ago. Jay also comes from a deli family. These guys knew what they were doing. I was excited. I didn’t eat much in the hours leading up to my pilgrimage. Let’s call it Yom Kippur training. After getting off the Q train, I headed for the deli. On my way, I passed delicious-looking pizza joints and other ethnic restaurants clearly only frequented by locals. I was a stranger in this neighborhood, and I wanted to eat everything in sight. Then in the distance, I saw the deli, and I knew that I had reached my destination. Upon entering, the

136

HOLIDAY 2013

smell of corned beef, pastrami, rye, and all things deli tickled my nostrils and taunted my stomach. Lloyd was saying goodbye to some regulars. One man was telling him about his recent vacation. A rabbi made his way out the door. It was a mixed crowd there; not everyone was Jewish. In fact, according to Lloyd, most of his customers aren’t even Jewish. Apparently, The Sopranos’ Tony Sirico comes in every few weeks or so. He loves the place, and has a signed picture on the wall. And I thought Paulie Walnuts only ate rigatoni and gravy! Lloyd showed me all the pictures of his family that lined the walls. There’s a lot of kitsch here, like the matzo ball that hangs from the ceiling like a disco ball, or the hot dog hat that Lloyd likes to wear. There’s a new joke by the cash register every day. The food is fantastic. Lloyd has his process of making everything, but his corned beef is phenomenal. To use his words, he steams the crap out of it, “so it melts like butter and melts in your

mouth.” Of course, if it was butter, the place wouldn’t be kosher. But the beef does melt like it. Lloyd makes his own Russian dressing. The orange-hued dressing isn’t my favorite—in fact it’s one of the few foods I don’t like—but his was perfect on my corned beef. For children, he cuts a pickle in the shape of a heart. For catered birthdays, he fries a potato pancake in the shape of the birthday boy or girl’s age, and places it in a bed of applesauce. The regulars keep coming back, and new people find out about the place and become regulars. It’s a little far from where I live, but maybe I’ll move out to Brooklyn, just for this spot. The delis may be dwindling, but hopefully they’ll be around for more generations. Lloyd knows how to win ’em over. His email and license plate are deli related. “It’s in my blood,” he told me. “I just love it.” And I love it, too. A corned beef sandwich on rye sure beats services.

The Game

The Game is a family tradition and a Christmas nightmare, in all the best ways. WRITTEN BY

I

NICK POYNER

t’s almost Christmas! Which, of course, means it’s time to keep those Christmas lights up a little longer! And also, for my family, The Game! Sometime after all the courtesies of gift giving but right before dinner, we play. On a good year, 15 of us circle a mound of presents. However, it’s not made of Santa’s goodies. These presents are individually wrapped boxes of terror. An indication that the time for pleasantries has ended. Very rarely does anyone in my family go out of his or her way to obtain said presents. My aunt and uncle like to “repurpose” gifts from Christmases past. My cousin uses it as the dumping ground from her yearly basement cleaning. My mother is not as cheap. She goes to the store and finds the cutest toy animals that make the loudest fart noises and puts them in the pile. She’s a classy lady.

Personally, I try to avoid buying anything. Instead, my entries often include dated toys. No teddy bears. No Barbie dolls. No super cool Star Wars action figures that everyone loves and no one is too old to enjoy. Most of the time, one man’s trash is just another man’s unfortunately accumulated trash. Previous entries also include an industrial sized bag of pork rinds, a Xeroxed cursed family portrait and expired canned goods. The rules are simple: if you hit one of the two chosen numbers on the die, take a present. Round one: take from the middle. Round two: take from each other. Round one, get as many of those gifts as you can. Hoard. Bad. Good. Doesn’t matter. It’s quantity over quality. Cover your bases. Because round two gets vicious. In Round 2, you find out which family members you won’t talk to until next Christmas. With the help of the die, round

two allows you to steal from anyone. You’re a lone wolf. You’re playing for you and you alone. At the start, be nice to Grandma and Grandpa. They are your elders. Have some respect. However, if they steal from you, give ’em hell. All those years of nurturing you fall by the wayside. Picking at garbage and fighting with your family may not sound like the most pleasant holiday experience. But at least it’s over presents and not all those other things. Really, by the end, if you don’t end up with an extra five bucks or a worthless toy, you’ve lost. And that’s it.
