SUMMER 2014

Gentlemen, Welcome to the summer issue of Talk of the Town. The sun is shining, the World Cup is on, and the golf courses are beautifully manicured. It’s a great time of year to be a gentleman! Summer in North Jersey is a relaxing time. Let’s face it: nothing gets done on Fridays. Most of us are already mentally checked out of the week before we head down to the shore for the weekend. We smoke our cigars outside and celebrate America’s birthday while wearing red, white, and blue shorts to honor Her. It’s the only way we know. So what do we have in store for you this summer? Let’s start out by talking food. First, we need it to survive. Second, we love it—kind of like how the Wolf of Wall Street loves quaaludes. In our Gentlemen’s Guide to Eating & Drinking, we document all the best places to enjoy eating this summer on both sides of the Hudson. With the World Cup humming on our televisions (and work computers), we wanted to dive into some Brazilian cuisine to really get into the futbol spirit. Hey, it only happens once every four years. We also want you to look your best when you’re enjoying the countless barbecues this season. My philosophy is always simple: I might not be the best-looking guy in the bunch, but I’ll be one of the best dressed—and that says a lot more about the man beneath the clothing. I also want to turn your attention to a young man named Gerald Javier. This 28-year-old sensation is on the road to becoming a pro Mixed Martial Arts fighter. A local kid with a heart of gold, you’ll definitely be in his corner after reading about him. This year, the Rubik’s Cube celebrates its 40th birthday, and it’s still just as mystifying. We sat down with Paul Hoffman, the CEO of the Liberty Science Center who was an integral player in bringing a $5 million exhibition that celebrates the Rubik’s Cube to Jersey City. We delve into the Cube’s history, and Hoffman’s take on this multicolored 3-D masterpiece. The first issue of Talk of the Town came out in June 2011, and honestly, we weren’t sure how it would go. I like to tell people that I don’t know what tomorrow will bring, so I’m not trying to plan further ahead than that. It has been three amazing years since we began this journey, and now we are truly proud to celebrate our 12th issue with you. In our premiere issue, we remarked about using the term “Gentlemen’s Guide” to describe this magazine. Someone once asked me why we chose that. That person felt it offered up an undesirable meaning, as if this was a pornographic endeavor. This shocked me. Had the true meaning of what it means to be a gentleman become totally lost on today’s culture? The thought that men could no longer truly be gentlemen worried me, and we set out to change that within these pages. We hope that we have done just that. For those of us who work to put this magazine in your hands, we can honestly say that we have poured our hearts into this project, and it has become a part of our lives. Have an amazing summer, Gentlemen. See you in the fall.

Best,

Brandon Goldstein

This is Deron. He was weak. Lightheaded. Short of breath. Anxious. After traditional atrial fibrillation procedures failed, there was little quality of life left – only a paralyzing fear from his AFib. But Deron came to The Valley Hospital for a new hybrid ablation procedure that finally worked for his AFib. Performed by an electrophysiologist and cardiac surgeon working side-by-side, this procedure can restore quality of life. If you or your loved one suffers from AFib, come to the provider with the solution to live

like Deron.

His AFib is finally gone.

Summer Binge-Watching

Hot dogs, beer, and Netflix…What could be more American? WRITTEN BY

ot extra time this summer? Trying to escape that oppressive humidity? Well, fortunately for you, Netflix has your back with many, many hours of quality TV shows, both old and new. Here’s what you need to get caught up on. Note the amount of time needed to complete each show in parentheses.

1. Orange is the New Black (2 seasons – 18 hours)

Some of you have probably already binge-watched the Netflix original’s second season. If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? This commercial and critical darling shows no sign of slowing down with a third season already in production. Don’t be the last one in the office to watch this prison dramedy. Continued on pg. 42

2. Louie

(3 seasons – 19 hours, 52 minutes) Louis C.K.’s somewhat autobiographical FX show always catches you off guard. There’s nothing else like it on TV. Part sadness, part reality, and a whole lot of funny, “Louie” is a breath of fresh air for those sick of prime-time procedurals.

3. Sherlock

4. Top of the Lake

Forget “Elementary,” this is the modern-day Sherlock Holmes you should be watching. Benedict Cumberbatch (“Star Trek Into Darkness”) and Martin Freeman (“The Hobbit”) make an absolutely riveting onscreen duo. Each episode plays out like its own mini-movie, so you can always take breaks.

If you’re a fan of “True Detective,” then you must check out this Sundance Channel miniseries. Yes, miniseries has become a four-letter word, but if you let that stop you, you’ll miss out on one of the grittiest, most brutal investigation cases in years.

5. The Wonder Years

6. Twin Peaks

Whether you’re watching for the first time or revisiting this classic family sitcom, “The Wonder Years” is the perfect summer show. Relive your own personal teenage angst with Kevin Arnold and the gang.

For those of you who haven’t already watched “Twin Peaks,” be prepared to invest too much time into the surreal drama immediately. Few shows like this have ever graced network television. It’s weird. It’s funny. It’s sexy. Unfortunately, the show lasted two seasons because a single murder case only stays fresh for so long.

7. The IT Crowd

8. The Twilight Zone

(3 seasons – 13 hours, 30 minutes)

(6 seasons – 2 days, 9 hours, 30 minutes)

(4 seasons – 12 hours)

“The IT Crowd” wrapped its five-season long run last year with a Christmas special. This British sitcom exposed Chris O’Dowd (“Bridesmaids”) to American audiences. But the real treat here is Richard Ayoade’s Moss whose social awkwardness rivals that of Sheldon Cooper from “The Big Bang Theory.”

(1 season– 7 hours)

(2 seasons – 1 day, 6 hours)

(Seasons 1, 2, 3 and 5 – 2 days, 14 hours, 10 minutes) The sci-fi series was way ahead of its time when it came out in 1959 and it holds up. Forgive some of the cheesy special effects, “The Twilight Zone” tells some incredibly compelling science fiction stories in short 25 minute bursts.

9. The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones (3 seasons – 1 day, 20 hours)

Just kidding. Avoid this one, unless you’re a die-hard. It is on Netflix though.

SUMMER STYLE The season’s hottest accessories A few weeks ago, the Talk of the Town team and stylist Candace Kristin took a trip to Saks Fifth Avenue at The Shops at Riverside to check out which styles were trending for summer 2014. With a little help from these pieces, you’ll be looking dapper all summer long.

Lapel Flowers Many designers have incorporated this chic accessory into their collections. Lapel flowers are a great way to stand out and achieve a look that is personal, fresh and original. Make a fashion statement at your next occasion, and show off your eye for detail.

Lapel flowers by Hook + Albert

Pocket squares by Saks Fifth Avenue

Pocket Squares Floral prints have made their way into menswear this season. If this look is too much for you to wear on a larger scale (like a shirt), try to incorporate this trend in a pocket square. It’s a fantastic way to add a bit of pizzazz to your outfit, and doesn’t need to only be worn during business hours. Try it with denim and a blazer on the weekends.

The Casual Shoe This season, you will see many contemporary takes on traditional designs while browsing the shoe department. Modernize your oxford, and select a pair that comes in a non-traditional color. Heather grey or any bright hue might be the look for you. White, or colored rubber soles are another fresh look. Heading to a body of water? Substitute your flip-flops for chic slip-ons.

The Fedora This hat has made a resurgence thanks to celebrities sporting them everywhere. If you are looking for something to freshen up your wardrobe, the fedora is for you. Placement is key. It should frame your eyes without hiding your face. Black and white fedoras by Block Headwear Navy fedora by Hickey Freeman

Belts

All belts by Saks Fifth Avenue

No outfit, whether it’s for something casual or related to business, is complete without a belt. This season, there is no shortage of color and style options. Think outside the box, and reach for a bright color in leather or woven rope.

Bags by Ben Minkoff

The Man Bag No longer just a feminine accessory, the “man bag” is masculine, handsome and a great addition to a contemporary wardrobe. This season, designers have provided men with great looking briefcases, totes, duffels and folios. Each has its own intricate structure and details, but if you want a bag that’s a bit more current, select one with handles, and ditch the shoulder strap.

Bracelets It appears the tides have turned, and more men are now open to the idea of wearing bracelets. If you want to jump on board this trend, look for bracelets that are metal, nautical-inspired, wrapped, woven leather, or beaded. Want to go for the gusto? Try layering a couple on your wrist next to your timepiece. Anchor and fish hook by Miansai

Candace Kristin began her career in fashion as Fashion Director of Publishing at Child Magazine. She traveled to Europe for trend reporting and learned about the industry from the inside. While at Allure Magazine, she continued her involvement with fashion shows. Keep your wardrobe up-to-date by checking out Candacekristin.com.

Strietman ES3 Espresso Machine If this beauty was hanging on the wall in the kitchen, I’m not sure I’d ever even use it. The idea behind this wall-mount lever espresso machine was first developed in Italy in the 1950s but it is rarely used in today’s machines. With this technique, a column of hot water is manually pressed through the coffee by means of a piston. It is a very clear procedure and it provides you with the perfect espresso. Due to the open boiler design and removable piston, the technique is simple and makes it a low-maintenance machine. It uses electricity to heat the water and has an adjustable thermostat to set the water temperature. Make your kitchen sexier today at strietman.net.

Warstic WhiteHawk Warstic Bat Company will tell you that this baseball bat is for serious game play. As much as we believe them, we also think the WhiteHawk looks better hanging on a wall in a Man Cave instead of tucked away most of the time in a bat bag. Made from white ash, each bat is flame treated and then stained. You can customize the bat’s length, stain color and engraving. Swing for the fences at warstic.com.

Aeroboat One of the fastest and most elegant small yachts ever produced, U.K. design studio Claydon Reeves recently unveiled the Aeroboat, and it’s perfect for anyone who wants to breakfast in St. Tropez, lunch in Antibes, and dine in Monaco at night. The Spitfire, a World War II fighter plane, and one of the world’s most iconic aircraft inspired the Aeroboat’s exterior design. Key to the design is the renowned, original Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that powers the craft. The supercharged Merlin V12 engine, with bespoke gearbox and final drive, can achieve speeds of over 75 knots. The Merlin V12 engine was designed over 80 years ago and has been installed in many iconic aircraft, with its power output varying between 1,500 and 2,500 horsepower depending on the application. The designers are planning to build a limited edition of 14 Aeroboats tailored to the personal requirements of each client, from cockpit layout and interior trim to engine specifications and exterior finishes. Order yours today at claydonreeves.com.

2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat With likely the most horsepower Chrysler has ever put in a V8, the new Challenger SRT Hellcat is one of the most badass cars we’ve seen. While the Mustang comes close to replicating the look of the glorious cars of the past, the Camaro missed the mark. The Challenger hit the nail right on the head. It is a beautifully mean machine. Projected at close to, or above 600 horsepower, the 6.2-liter Hemi engine produces a growl that leaves no mystery as to why this car is called the Hellcat. With details still shaky on the exact specifications, we can only say the Hellcat will be fast. My guess is it should go from 0 to 60 in about three or so seconds. While the exterior looks like a merciless beast, the interior is well appointed and elegantly refined. All in all, it’s a true “Beauty and the Beast” tale.

BKON Craft Brewer I know you’re thinking beer, but think coffee and tea! Utilizing BKON’s innovative Reverse Atmospheric INfusion (RAIN) process, the Craft Brewer extracts the optimal flavor elements of even the most complex teas, coffees, and fruits for a perfect cup of your favorite morning delight. With a sleek look that belongs in kitchens of the future, the Craft Brewer can brew over 60 cups in an hour, and store over 200 recipes. It even self-cleans. For the truest tea enthusiasts out there, there’s nothing better. Brew a cup at bkonbrew.com.

The Marbel Board One of the world’s lightest electric vehicles, this seemingly typical skateboard is anything but. With the ability to travel at up to 20 miles per hour, and a range of 10 miles, the Marbel Board may offer the abilities the Segway always promised but never delivered. Weighing only 9.9 pounds, you can surely expect to see them in urban environments and on college campuses everywhere very soon. You can even control the throttle using your smartphone, leaving the hand controller at home. Clean, efficient, and truly remarkable, the first production line is on its way. Ride off into the sunset at ridemarbel.com.

Below the Boat Charts Ever wonder what it would look like if you could actually see the depths of the Hudson River? Now you can with these beautiful 3-D maps! Starting with a bathymetric chart (the underwater equivalent of a topographic map), the contours are laser-cut into sheets of Baltic birch and glued together to create a powerful visual depth. Select layers are handcolored blue so it’s easy to discern land from water, and major byways are etched into the land. Then the whole thing is placed in a custom, solid-wood frame and protected seamlessly with a sheet of durable, ultratransparent Plexiglas. With pieces based on the scenic Pacific Northwest’s volcanic coastline, the warm sandy shores of the Southwest and Southeast, the history-rich coastline of the Atlantic, and lakes from all around the continent, there’s a map that will hit home for every design enthusiast. Journey underwater at belowtheboat.com.

Dropcam Pro Sometimes we let our pitbull mix roam free in the office, and nobody is sure what we will find when we come back. With the Dropcam Pro, we no longer have to worry (or maybe we still do), but at least we get to watch him tear the office apart. Using Wi-Fi video monitoring, you can access high-quality live or stored video of your home or office from your smartphone, tablet or computer. When you tune in and see that your pet is acting up, you can speak directly to him or her through the two-way talk feature. Darkness isn’t a problem either, as the Dropcam Pro has integrated night vision. For a small fee, you can record straight to the cloud, and access the past week or month of video anytime and anywhere. With the new Dropcam Tabs feature, you can keep tabs on gates, fences, doors, windows and even your valuables, and you will receive an alert if something is open when it’s not supposed to be. Head to dropcam.com, and stop worrying.

The Dangers of

Summer

Time for some fun in the sun, right? Not so fast! WRITTEN BY

NICK POYNER

Here are some things to keep in mind this season. You’re welcome in advance.

2. Use Sunscreen This, my friends, is a two-parter:

1. Wear Boat Shoes Sand is hot. Asphalt is hot. Broken glass is sharp. Boat shoes are flat superheroes protecting your feet from imminent danger.

74

SUMMER 2014

A. Sunburns hurt. My mom tells me this every year and I have yet to learn my lesson. That said, I am bestowing upon you wisdom you’ve heard time and time again: use sunscreen everywhere. Remember to apply it to the back of your knees. If you don’t, you’re going to follow days of pain with… B. Uneven burns. Last year, I got a sunburn shaped like SpongeBob SquarePants. Lies you say? Sure, maybe it didn’t look exactly like the adorable Nickelodeon creature, but the odd square on my left shoulder could have easily been avoided. Instead, I wore a mark of shame the whole season.

3. Avoid Rum Buckets

4. Be Careful in the Ocean

Why is this number three on the list? Because it’s important! Maybe you’ve never experienced the sheer force of a 3 p.m. beachside rum bucket, and maybe you never will, but if someone ever offers you a mid-afternoon monster-sized pail of rum and sugar, politely decline. This vessel of terror will ruin your afternoon. Sure, you’ll get a nice buzz, but the hangover eventually follows with a vengeance. The following day of pain and suffering will remind you of your early college days.

There’s nothing more fun than splashing in the water (or surfing, for those of you so inclined). Please remember that the ocean doesn’t care about you. Sorry to be to blunt, but it’s true. The ocean is a fickle beast filled with other little fickle beasts. Whether it’s riptides, jellyfish, or whatever dwells at the bottom of the sea, be aware. Always remember not to swim after your rum bucket.

6. Get Out Early

5. Hold On to Your Suit

There are few things more painful than beach traffic, especially after a long day in the sun. Get to the beach early to maximize your sun time, but when you see the beach thinning out later in the afternoon, make your move, and get out! Sitting in bumperto-bumper traffic for hours along the coast is no fun. It’s slow torture. Put down the top of your convertible and blast “Rosalita” at full volume. However, this loses its effect when sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic for ten miles.

Someone will enjoy the show, but it won’t be you. Secure all clasps, ties and/or fasteners before exiting the water. Pretty simple stuff here, folks. This summer, get out there and enjoy the beach, but enjoy it responsibly, like a winner. I’ll see you for my next installment: The Dangers of Winter. Perhaps you think I’m just paranoid. Wait, why is that man watching me? He looks suspicious. Oh boy. This could be bad. I hope I make it to writing about winter.

Watch For Parmigiani Brings the Samba Style with Its New World Cup Watches

W

ith Brazil favored to win the 2014 World Cup on its home turf, it’ll be interesting to see what trends spread from Rio to the rest of the world. Just four short years ago, we saw (and certainly heard) the abrupt rise in popularity of the vuvuzela, a word and instrument you probably haven’t seen or heard since the games left South Africa. Regardless of what Brazilian hooligan fads come out of this year’s games, we are certain that one thing will stand the literal test of time: watches. Watch brand Parmigiani, whose commitment to its fans mirrors that of the Brazilian national soccer team, has joined forces with Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF) to continually support and connect with young Brazilian football talents of the future. Although you may not be young, Brazilian, or particularly talented at football, Parmigiani has crafted beautiful watches for us common folks to enjoy. Engraved with the iconic emblem of the CBF on the case back, the Pershing Chronograph model for men is clad in the official colors of the Brazilian Football Confederation: gold, blue and green. The watch, which is 45 millimeters in diameter, is available in either a two-color version with a titanium case and a rose gold bezel, or a titanium version with a white gold bezel. The two models feature the symbolic intense shade of blue on its dial, decorated with a “Côtes de Genève” guilloche pattern. In lieu of seconds indexes, there are green stars representing the five World Cups won by Brazil. Green numerals and yellow gold hands enhance the hour and minute chronograph counters. The tachometer features on the dial surround are a golden yellow, a classic characteristic of the famed Brazilian uniforms. It may not sound like a vuvuzela, but rest assured, these watches will not only give you the time, but also stylishly withstand it.

What’s Your

Favorite Color? How to pick the right Johnnie Walker for your tastes WRITTEN BY

JOSEPH “WHISKY JOE” GRATKOWSKI

W

Black Label One of my all-time favorites, this is my go-to when I am in a place with a limited selection. I know I can always count on it to deliver. It was the original Johnnie Walker blend, and it has stood the test of time. The depth and complexity with Black Label is what keeps bringing me back. It has everything, and it’s completely balanced. Deeply intricate and wickedly smooth, no whisky in this blend is younger than 12 years old. When this color appeals to me: All the time. This is always on my shelf. It pairs well with a wide range of food, and it’s great for poker games. It has so much going on palate-wise that it is a must-try and a great bang for the buck. Black Label is best enjoyed on the rocks or with a splash of water.

Red Label The world’s best-selling Scotch whisky. You’ve seen it everywhere. You can get it on an airplane for crying out loud! Designed to have universal appeal while still maintaining a bold character, it is incredibly versatile. A combination of whiskies from virtually every region, it holds up neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails. The intensity makes it stand out. That spicy kick and smoky finish leaves your tongue tingling. When this color appeals to me: Outdoors and in large groups. I can’t put my finger on it, but I tend to use it as a mixer when I’m on a boat or working the grill. I like it for large groups because this bottle is easy to stretch with its flexibility.

SUMMER 2014 93

Gold Label Reserve This baby is a limited edition, but it’s available as of this writing, so I will give it a little space. It has arguably the coolest bottle design of the bunch. One of the most underrated single malt whiskies in the world is Clynelish, and there is some of that glorious juice in here. There is a fruity and creamy nature to this, so by the time the honey kicks in you are in heaven. When this color appeals to me: Summer parties. Excellent on its own, or with a little water, Gold Label Reserve is a beauty. Here’s the kicker: this one is shockingly good with soda! Blasphemy? Perhaps, but when my buddy from Canada tells me putting Gold Label Reserve in soda is crazy, I tell him that he has never suffered the humidity of New Jersey in July. The syrupy nature of sodas harmonizes with the fruit and oak of the Scotch. Crazy talk? Try it, and tell me.

Double Black Building on the foundation of Black Label, this is one of the newer releases on this list. Double Black has more heavily peated malts mixed in. There is also some aging in deeply charred oak casks. The vanilla tones found in this whisky make it a smoke lover’s dream. Master Blender Jim Beveridge handpicks whiskies that marry together to form Black Label’s impish brother. Where Black is balanced, Double Black is bold. Ever meet two people that share the same DNA but are quite different? That holds true here. Thankfully, Double Black has evolved from a “limited” to a permanent offering, giving us a little more time to do our DNA analysis. When this color appeals to me: When I’m feeling bold and frisky. I love this one when I may be doing something outside my comfort zone. Whether it is simply going to a new bar or restaurant, or anywhere that’s new, this bottle has adventure written all over it.

94

SUMMER 2014

Blue Label Setting the standard for rare blends, Blue Label needs no introduction. Infinite layers of flavor are the result of hand-selecting the rarest casks in the Johnnie Walker collection. Multifaceted, commanding, and insanely smooth, you can revisit this whisky a lifetime over and still never fully figure it out. If a single malt Scotch is an outstanding instrument, and blended Scotch is an orchestra, then Blue Label is a symphony that I could listen to all the time. When this color appeals to me: Key moments in life’s journey. The term “key moment” is an intentionally vague term, as they are different for everyone. For some, they can be as epic as childbirth, or closing a major business deal. For others, they are far more personal. Whatever that rare moment may be, this is the rare Scotch to pair it with.

Platinum Label We’re crossing into new territory here. In order to enter this bottle, whiskies must be at least 18 years old. Do you remember what you were doing that long ago? Well, since then, these whiskies have been aging, and now they are ready to celebrate how far both of you have come. Since the beginning of the Johnnie legacy, there have always been exclusive blends created for favored customers and private gatherings, and that is the inspiration for Platinum Label. This has an air of luxury. Beaming with vanilla pods, nutty creaminess, and dried fruits that burst in the mouth, opulent is an understatement when describing Platinum Label. When this color appeals to me: Special occasions, or when I have my “fancy pants” on. This can range from something as large as a wedding, to something more private and intimate like a wedding anniversary. For some reason, when I drink this one I feel like it would be located in the type of bar that would require a password. Thankfully it’s not!

Regardless of what your favorite color is, please remember to enjoy responsibly. Keep walking. Joe Gratkowski is the New Jersey Whisk(e)y Ambassador for DIAGEO. He has presented and poured Whisky for people ranging from the famous to your neighbor. Check out his writings online at www.whiskyjoe.com, or follow him on twitter @whiskyjourney. WHY WE LOVE IT

Fast Food I

admit it: I love fast food. Of course, it’s more of a love-hate relationship. I love to eat it, but then it hates me the rest of the day as it sits in my stomach. Still, I doubt I’ll ever give it up. They say fast food has addictive ingredients, but does anybody really know what ingredients are in fast food? Haven’t they all made claims of “100% real beef ” like, several times, only to be proven wrong each time? They should be at 140% real beef by now. They say ignorance is bliss, and sometimes there isn’t anything more blissful than a Chalupa from Taco Bell. That’s some authentic Mexican right there! Maybe it’s the convenience factor that so often leads me down the long road of the short drive-thru, but I honestly have to say that fast food tastes really, really good…and I’ve feasted on crawfish scooped out of the Bayou down in

98

SUMMER 2014

New Orleans, and eaten dishes prepared by some of the world’s finest chefs. I doubt that restaurants would create a winning formula if they took items from fast food menus and prepared them with better ingredients and possibly less salt. Why have I not seen the Crunchwrap Supreme on Mexican menus nationwide? Granted, I know it’s not “real” Mexican, but then again, most Mexican places are serving up anglicized Mexican cuisine. What could be more Mexican-American than the Crunchwrap Supreme? Tell me you don’t love chicken nuggets. I’m not sure how much chicken, or inorganic matter goes into them, but at the end of the day, they just taste so good. As an added bonus, they come in a cute little portable box so I can pop them into my mouth while I’m driving. Chalk that up as a win in my book. The health nuts of America have

not only waged war on fast food chains, but their beautiful, mostly svelte mascots as well. The Burger King has been phased out, along with Ronald’s entire posse. Ronald might not be too far behind. I don’t totally understand it. Is the problem that kids see a clown and want a burger? Frankly, I don’t get the association. Kids want everything. When I was young I just pointed to things and mumbled the words “I want.” My parents, perhaps smarter than I’ll ever be, perhaps smarter than parents are now, just said “No.” That was the end of it. Let’s stop blaming the clown and that adorable little Hamburglar, shall we? Gidget, the Taco Bell Chihuahua may have died, but I assure you it wasn’t from her diet. In fact, she lived to be 15. For those of you wondering, that’s 105 in human years. Clearly, I need to eat more Cheesy Gordita Crunches.
