HOMELESSNESS IN AMERICA Historically marginalized groups are more likely to be disadvantaged within housing and homeless spheres

AS OF JAN. 2020 THERE WERE 580,466 PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS Males are more likely to become homeless than women

Unfortunately due to the Covid- 19 Pandemic this number has unfortuntely risen since this 2020 statistic. While there is not an updated number for this yet, there are some important trends to note: Risk of homelessness is significantly tied to gender, race and enthnicity. Historically marginalized groups are at a disadvantge in may ways in the housing and homeless sphere due to higher unemployment rate, lower incomes, and higher incarceration rates leading to higher rates of homelessness.

The majority of unhoused/ unshletered people are individuals. About 70 % of to homless population are individuals while the rest are families. Children are the main priorities, so families are often favored for shelter opportunities. It is also more common for men to be homless than women.

MAIN CAUSES OF HOMELESSNESS There is a large gap currently between the continually rising housing costs and incomes being at a standstill.

INCOME

Many people cannot afford food, clothing and transportation on top of housing. There are also many low income households that are unemployed or underemployed

HEALTH

Health related issues can be a leading cause of homelessness. Once someone with a health related issue is on the street the problem often worsens.

VIOLENCE

Many people that leave some sort of situation where domestic ot interpersonal violence is common often find themselves homeless.

RACIAL DISPARITIES

There are still many lingering effects of racism that are currently negatively impacitng people of color especially in the African American or Black communities.

HOMELESSNESS IN PORTLAND 4015 PEOPLE EXPERIENCE HOMELESSNESS ON ANY GIVEN NIGHT Only 50% were sheltered 44% of that is chronically homeless Homelessness is on the rise +14% people with disabilities +37% chronically homeless +75% people over the age of 70

Portland currently does not have enough resources for all the individuals without a home in the area. The area is also expensive to live in making it much harder for people to keep their residence. Half of the people in Portland spend a thrid of their income on rent, which leaves them at a greater risk of homelessness.

GETTING HELP HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE HOME? Association of a "traditional" home with trauma Surrounded by a new sense of family

There are many people that do not want to get help after living on the streets. This can be for many reasons, but one is because they now have a different definition of home and have found a sense of community in the places they reside. It is important for people to feel like the have a choice in what rehabilitation services they partake in for this reason.

The theoretical framework of Maslow's Heirarchy of needs played a large role in thinking of the services to bring into the project.

This is because many of the people coming to use the facility are not currently able to provide themselves with the basic human needs of food, water, and shelter on a regular basis. It is important to be able to help provide people with these needs as well as give the support and opportunity to provide more so people can further grow and develop.

Allowing for people to attain more than basic needs provides space for the growth and development of the remaining steps in maslows hierarchy such as saftey, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization

TRAUMA INFORMED DESIGN Many people coming have lived through trauma Strategies: Lighting Options Wayfinding Clear uncluttered sightlines Privacy/ personal space Stress management options courtyard

Many people usign this facility will undoubtedly becoming from experiencing some kinf of trauma. That could be trauma that they experienced in what we consider a "traditional" home setting, or something they have experienced living on the street. It is also a truamatic experience to be homeless in and of itself.

Truama informed design helps direct the design of this facility to allow for all users to feel safe and comfortable. There are many different aspects to consider like providing lighting option in spaces to that there is not only harsh overhead lighting. Clear wayfinding is also critical so people feel comfortable nagivating a new space.

PLACE ATTACHMENT People attach feelings to places they spend a lot of time in

Spaces needs to be flexible to allow people to customize

It is common for people to associate feelings with spaces that they spend a lot of time in. It is important to keep this in mind while designing each area to help ensure people feel positive and ocmfortable in each area.

Housing needs to have some furniture in already so its not overwhelming to furnish

it is important to provide flexible seating, as well as calming warm design elements in the rehabilative service side so people can feel comfortable when visiting. This will in turn help make individuals feel like this is a place they want to spend time in.

The retail and service side of things need to feel welcoming so individuals have a sense of belonging

The apartments are also very important when thinking about place attachemnt theory. The spaces need to feel comfortable, so providing basic furniture that is comfortable will help ensure people do not feel overwhelmed when it come to furnishing an empty apartment. The apartments will feel like a blank canvas with furniture, which encourages the tenant to personalize the space.

RETAIL PRECEDENT: WE ARE KNITTERS Pop-up store in Paris France Oriented Strand Board (OSB) which was chosen for its sustainability and organic material Merchandise panels direct trafic and highlight products Displays are easily moved and organized based on the functions Driving goals were to make it functional as well as feel like a traditional haberdashery

The main takeaway from this space is that they use their fixtures to keep their space flexible and the OSB panels on the walls helps create movement through the space

The Portland climate remains fairly moderate throughout the year ranging from 38- 85 degrees all year so it is never too hot or too cold. This makes it much easier for people without a home to live on the streets, so many people will travel to areas with similar climates

Here you can see the exterior rendered view of the building chosen for the project from the developers website. This building is located in the heart of downtown Portland Oregon, which was desirbale because for many homeless indiviudals this is already a familiar area. It is important to note that the side profile highlights that there is one main first floor, but as you progess upwards the floors split into two tower like structures and are staggered.

Strengths: There are two sides of the building which can help keep the services portion separate from the housing provided

Weaknesses: There is not a private outdoor space for the individuals that live there.

Opportunities: Has bike storage on the ground level to encourage biking as the primary mode of transportation

Threats: The building is open to the public and might need a little more security

There are a lot of different resource for trasportation around the building. Portland heavily encourages the use of alternative transportation rather than using a personal vehicle. There are many pedestrian and bike paths all across the city making it easy to get most places. They also have an above ground rail system called the MAXX that will quickly transport people all around the city and to neighboring areas.

VISION STATEMENT UpTurn is a homeless rehabilitation center that strives to help enhance the lives of individuals that face homelessness that want to create a better life for themselves. UpTurn is a place for people to come for work and housing opportunities along with other rehabilitative services.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION This will be a multi-use building that will have a retail store space on the first level for jobs and that is open to the community for interaction. The upper floors of the building will have therapy type spaces that will provide a wide range of services. There will also be personal apartments for individuals experiencing homelessness

The main color pallete can be seen in the center of the material board. They are very vivid colors that in large amounts can be aggrivating for some people. They are ment to be used as accents throughout the building and to highlight elements like way finding. The remaining materials are intended to be much softer and calmer to help keep the sapces feel warm and comfortable.

While solidyfying the program requirements for each space an adjacency matrix was used to help determine what spaces are more or less desireable when being placed next to eachother.

It was discovered that there are not necessarily any spaces that are undesriable to have next to eachother, but there are spaceS that are better suited to be next to eachother than others.

When starting bubble diagrams for the retail space it seemed beneficial to put the transaction counter next to the front door. It was also seemed most productive to have all the staff only spaces nect to eachother.

The rehabilitave service side houses many different resources. It was determined to be most funcational to have the most public spaces on the first floor and then the further up a person goes the more private the spaces get.
