DESIGN NEWS & INSIGHT ON COLOUR, MATERIAL, PATTERN, FINISHES, INCL. A TREND COLOUR PALETTE AND DEFINITION OF STYLE CATEGORIES

MAISON & OBJET is a bi-annual fair for home accessories and furniture. Target markets are France, Benelux and Europe in general. In terms of exhibitors there is strong presence of Italian, Danish, Swedish, Spanish and Portuguese companies.

This year’s January event was moved to 24.-28.03.2022 due to the pandemic.

With 50.000 attending and 1.800 exhibiting the first MAISON & OBJET after a long pause was definitely worth a visit. The atmosphere at the event was driven by a spirit of post-pandemic relief, the joy of re-engaging with the industry and cautious optimism about the future (of design).

The trade show takes place at the Parc d’expositions in Paris Nord, near CDG airport.

7 halls normally hold approx. 3000 exhibitors.

Space is allocated to contemporary and classic furniture, textiles, table ware, lighting, home accessories, craft objects and gifts.

A few examples from Maison & Objet - ecobirdy’s plates look like marble but are made from repurposed plastic kitchen waste, NOMA Edition’s Sen Chair is made of plastic waste, their candle holders from left over pieces of marble, the blankets from originalhome of recycled, dyed by hand cotton yarn. They are not only an example for responsible use of material but also for ethical production as the women who make them earn fair wages. Young designers are no longer interested in simply designing a product, but develop projects that are much more societal

Respectful use of limited and eco-friendly resource is becoming the norm. Circularity is the master class = that is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable products.

THE ROLE OF WOOD

While it’s hip to work with wood, designers try to save material, use veneer instead of massive planks and apply wood in more decorative ways to demonstrate how precious it is. This results in more book matched layouts and marquetry-type patterns.

WEWOOD

When coming from responsibly managed forests, wood is one of the few sustainable natural materials. Because of that the global demand for natural wood is higher than ever. It is increasingly difficult to fulfil it, prices rise.

Harto Design from Lyon for example only use local species like French walnut or oak. La Chaise Française is committed to a long-term sponsorship with "Plantons pour l'Avenir" who support reforestation and research projects. For each purchase a tree is planted in a sustainably managed French forest.

HARTO

#myfurnitureisfrench is an initiative by the National Union of French Furniture to support French manufacturers. Like in other parts of the world, companies put new focus on local production, using local materials and designers are developing stronger links with local craftsmanship. The result is a language of form that is unique and typically French.

The quest for less plastic, more responsible and sustainable materials also revives old age materials that have been forgotten. Bamboo, and other cellulose fibres, hemp and rattan are examples.

One of the most effective ways out of the ecological crisis is simple: LESS - less production, less consumption means less usage of materials, less waste, less spent etc

Not only generation Z has discovered buying ‚second hand‘ as a viable option to help save the planet. Fashion brands today sell their vintage pieces in the regular stores for prices as high as new produce.

This now reaches the furniture and accessories market with companies like the Italian All’origine, who have collected common mid-century household items in vast numbers.

QUIRKY SHAPES RETRO-FUTURISTIC From these societal and ecology-driven aspects we now move on to style trends, starting with what possibly can be called a retro-futuristic approach.

The objects in this category look familiar on one hand, as they cite traditional style, on the other they come in quirky shapes or use unusual materials for a common feature.

GOLDEN TWENTIES ART DECO

Art Deco, the 100 years old style of the Golden Twenties - a mix of constructivist shapes inspired and influenced by the Bauhaus, Mondrian and DeStijl movements, paired with much glamour, velvet, gold, shiny surfaces and decorative patterns - is one of the long lasting trends.

It started 3-4 years ago, pre the pandemic.

If it is the nostalgia of what today seems like a euphoric time between two wars, where people believed in progress and a good future. Or simply the delight of luxurious interiors - what’s for sure is that there are countless objects in arch shape!

ZEN STYLE JAPANDI Japandi was a key style term in recent years, as both Scandinavia and Japan stand for a similar design style: minimalistic interiors founded in a desire for less, for reduction and simplicity. The calm and soothing atmosphere is supported by a palette of neutrals mainly, sometimes with a touch of Asian indigo blue or Scandi subtle pastels.

Materials are chosen carefully and objects crafted based on age-old knowledge. At Maison & Objet pure Zen style was more prevalent than a blend of East and West.

The signature restaurant La Cuillére (The Spoon) by Paola Navone & Daniel Rozensztroch is nostalgic with a contemporary feel. The use of red and white gingham fabric and the lace curtains complement the vintage vibe of the spoon museum-like restaurant.

MAXIMALISM

Maximalism is an explosion of pattern and colour, a ride through various decades. It is full of joy and happiness and optimism. A not so serious approach to interiors and an escape from the turbulent outside world.

SOFT NATURE

The soft palette inspired by natural materials remains to be key. Reddish wood tones, cork browns, burnt orange, mushroom beiges, moss and marble greens, combined with some fresh, slightly acidic yellow - all these soft colours make a harmonious base for fabrics, walls and accessories.

Not only in fashion, also in interiors, beige has had a huge comeback - easy to combine, and bringing warmth and harmony into living spaces. The trend for colours from the beige and brown spectrum follows a long period of bright white and a large range of warm and cool greys, which has been the dominant base colour family for a decade.

The trend for de-coloured surfaces and materials circles around the quest for less and peace of mind in a constantly demanding outside world. This pale, desaturated palette is easy, clean and straight-forward, calming and relaxing.

In the state of crisis the world is in, optimistic summer colour palettes feel like from a different planet - these uplifting, mood-boosting brights are just what we need. They help us embrace joy and be happier.

Light pink and rosé have become an integral part for interior design schemes. Until now they came in pale and barely-there versions. Now we see bolder colours from this family: from pink to purple they are cheerful additions to the palette.

REMEMBER

Chosen at what we believed is the end of the pandemic and the start of better times, Very Peri was meant to „display a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives.“ It’s an optimistic colour that fits better with fashion and cosmetics, only a few interior brands picked up on it. Especially Broste Copenhagen did a good job in integrating it with natural beige, ochre and brown.

In other segments this bold blue is a symbol for technology- and performance-driven products. In interiors though the strong presence of cobalt blue, which we have been watching since pre-pandemic times until now, might have rather been caused by the anniversary of Bauhaus, the love for Mondrian - it is the retro aspect driving the use of it. It is an elegant colour in combination with beige and the new browns, and striking when paired with bold yellow - another very popular colour in current interiors.

COLOUR PALETTE

The following slides summarise what was shown at the event in terms of colour.

It’s the ‚palette of today‘ for France and the European marketplace.

The green colour family is a staple, at the moment especially sage and greyed mints (yes, still….), dark forest and sea green. There are less of warmer moss-type greens and graphic bright green.

Yellow is huge, and comes in slightly acidic versions or warm and sunny yellow. Honey tones are rather new and blend perfectly with all the beige and sand tones in the interiors palette.

Very important and the basis for everything else: natural warm neutrals from gypsum off-white to pumice to wood tones of oak and walnut, an and muddy browns.

GREYED GREEN

The orange to brown family is further growing its relevance. They are seasonless, harmonious and bring a sense of peace, comfort and well-being in every living space.

The move from the many greys in the second decade to a much warmer neutral palette also results in a nice range of faded browns, especially looking great in matt finishes.

Orange tones are key to this and range from paler skin-type tones to deep rich burnt oranges. The lighter ones can swing between orange and red.

ORANGE IS KEY

Blues are not the most important colours in interiors at the moment, but we can find it in certain context like the Japandi style or related to Art Deco references. Like for other colour families, the majority is greyed off, except the very popular cobalt blue.

Purples are on their way up the trend ladder. For some years we have only seen cosmetic pinks and greyed lilacs, now there is ‚digital lavender’ and even bright purple entering the world of interiors. The call out of Very Peri by Pantone is leaving a mark, too. Reds are either leaning to orange or purple or are very dark, near black.

Each edition of Maison & Objet offers 3 or 4 trend spaces in which international trend agencies and trend forecasters curate their view of what is coming our way in regard to style, colour and material trends.

These spaces provide a good overview of what’s to see at the fair because they consist of products from the exhibitions.

A dreamlike and sensory journey into different forms nature can take: contemplative, spectacular, unique, sensorial, sculptural….

The colour palette ranges between sunlit light and pleasant mineral or wooden tones, translucent ocean colours, to deeply earthen and fiery red, brown and blackened shades.

Nature is the source for the new neutral range - the colours of water, natural fibre, gypsum, sand or shell.

The sensorial aspect of the materials is key. The wide variety of textures offers surprises and the comfort of the well-known.

Nature is the escape room from a turbulent and sometimes frightening world. We look to that for peace of mind and rejuvenation of body and soul. Together with the urgent need for more sustainable materials, wood, bamboo, rattan and hemp climb to new popularity.

The new brown comes through the back door together with the nature-inspired range of neutrals, and is a perfect partner for many earthy oranges and elegant beiges. The brown tones range from copper to dark and deep wood tones.

A gentle pause within the Maison & Objet Paris fair, this space revisits the five sensorial sensations - scenting, tasting, wrapping in soft fabrics, blossoming, illuminating - all this while listening to soothing music. It’s all about the home being a refuges in which we seek protection form the turbulent world.

Illuminating….

The video is reminiscent of Gerhard Richter’s famous candle painting. Ultimate simplicity, loaded with meaning and emotions. Like no other household item, the candle stands for warmth, peace of mind, solemnity and spirituality.They turn turn the home into a sacred space.

The variety is large, from baroque kitsch to Bauhaus-inspired blocks, from the traditional wax to LED-lit candles.

The pandemic made us think about our values, about what we really need. There is that love for the simple things, that bring us joy. We value the precious moments of intimate rituals.

The cup of tea in the morning, wrapping in warm blankets, lighting candles….

Objects with raw, rough edges, imperfect and sometimes with a sense of humour, bring an interior to life.

Home fragrances have become a market on its own, with a hall dedicated to it at the fair.

”How can you make your offer stand out within an ultra-competitive landscape? François Bernard provides a rich, nuanced answer to this question and spotlights various exhibitors at Maison&Objet. And what do they have in common? Meeting an ever-growing demand for personalisation and customisation from concept stores, creator boutiques, pop-up shops and museum shops, to stand out from the rest.

CLOSING THOUGHTS Hope you enjoyed this virtual walk through the fair!

This first MAISON & OBJET after a two year break was a good snapshot of what’s trending now, not yet a window into tomorrow. It was one of the first big shows after Covid, and it felt good to dive back into the design world ‚without masks and restrictions‘. But it became obvious that due to the pandemic there has been less new development in general. Like with other industries, processes were slower, workforce not onsite, material not as available etc. It was and still is difficult to plan and produce. We can feel it will take some time to get back to normal. Or maybe this new slowness stays, and might not be so bad, and better for the earth.

Good news for the interior decoration industry: people do spend more money for decorating and adapting their homes to fulfil new purposes. There is plenty of potential for design and technology to make the home better and future-proof.

Coming out of the pandemic, - or at least what feels like it - we face new dramatic developments which will cause even more profound re-evaluation and substantial , even radical change. Frightening, but also interesting times for developers and designers as the ‚architects‘ of a new world.
