Just like Eros or passion, the color yellow is fleeting – a minimal addition of blue or red and it becomes something else. In her performance Yellow, Tamar Ettun’s “movers” manifest the various states and phases of passion with costumes and props. Vanity, intimacy, chaos, attachment, that floating feeling – the theme encompasses them all.

Färgen gul är liksom Eros eller passionen flyktig, en liten ton av blått eller rött och färgen blir något annat. I sin performance Yellow låter Tamar Ettun sina ”movers” gestalta passionens olika tillstånd och faser med kostym och rekvisita. Fåfänga, intimitet, kaos, bundenhet, en svävande känsla – allt ryms i temat.

The haptic memory, that stores information through the senses, touch and body movements, is established early on. We taste the world, and subsequently amass a bank of experiences to relate to and navigate by. Tamar Ettun’s art appeals to corporeal experiences; textures, scents, colors, weight and lightness are brought together in performance art, video and sculpture. The images are ambiguous. They arouse at once both desire and repulsion. A can of sardines is opened while tightly clenched between teeth. Red tomatoes are mashed against naked and hairy legs. A shoe is laced with long strands of hair. There is a causality to the sequences of events that form these occurrences, where every action gives rise to a new one following a logic of its own.

Vi smakar på världen, och har därefter en bank av erfarenheter att knyta an till och navigera utifrån. Tamar Ettuns konst appellerar till kroppsliga erfarenheter; texturer, dofter, färger, tyngd och lätthet sammanfogas i performancekonst, video och skulptur. Bilderna är mångtydiga. De väcker begär och äckel på samma gång. En sardinburk öppnas inkilad mellan tänderna. Röda tomater mosas mot nakna och håriga ben. En sko snöras med långt hår. I händelserna finns ett förlopp av udda kausaliteter, där varje aktion föder en ny i en egen logik.

Ettun examines the body’s relationship to the phenomena – the world and the objects in our immediate surroundings, in order to create new experiences via our senses and strengthen our emotional compass. For an artist, choosing emotions as a distinct theme is not entirely uncomplicated. The British culture theorist, Sara Ahmed, reflects on how emotions can be a value meter both with regard to where a society stands and where it is heading. She states that emotions, as in “passion”, stemming from the Latin “passio”, are often associated to something feminine representing passivity and attachment, where the fear of passivity is related to the fear of being too emotional.1 Sense and sensibility are often set at odds with one another, along a masculine/feminine axis.

Ettun undersöker kroppens relation till fenomenen – världen och tingen runt omkring oss för att genom våra sinnen skapa nya erfarenheter och förstärka vår emotionella kompass. Att som konstnär välja känslor som ett tydligt tema är inte okomplicerat. Den brittiska kulturteoretikern Sara Ahmed resonerar kring hur känslor både kan bli en värdemätare på var ett samhälle står och vart det är på väg. Hon konstaterar att känslor som i ”passion” härstammar från latinets ”passio” ofta förknippas med något feminint som representerar passivitet och bundenhet, där rädslan för passivitet är knuten till rädslan för att vara för emotionell.1 Inte sällan har förnuft och känsla ställts mot varandra, även detta utifrån en maskulin/feminin axel.

In this context, the artist’s background is of particular significance. Tamar Ettun (born 1982) lives and works in New York, but grew up in a Jewish Orthodox environment in Jerusalem. The region’s tense political climate has long been an crucial subject that Ettun has related to in different ways. She has observed extensively and at close proximity how trauma and post-traumatic stress render people unable to feel empathy, a gnawing anxiety that gives rise to nervousness and aggression, but that is at times set in contrast to instances of reinforced vitality. In her work, Ettun puts an emphasis on the original meaning of the word emotion. It comes from the Latin emovere, meaning “to move, to move out”.2 In the symbolic language of the artist, static form becomes associated with trauma, and movement/action becomes an act of sympathy and empathy. In 2013, Ettun founded the dance group The Moving Company in New York, whose name bears the dual meaning of “movement/move” or of being emotionally “moved”. Since then, the artist has not only created several performance works with her “movers”, but also made use of the their bodies in the form of plaster casts conveying frozen movements that are in turn presented in the exhibition as sculptures.

I sammanhanget har konstnärens bakgrund betydelse. Tamar Ettun (f. 1982) är verksam i New York, men växte upp i judisk-ortodox miljö i Jerusalem. Regionens spända politiska klimat har varit och är ett viktigt ämne som Ettun på olika sätt har relaterat till. Hon har på nära håll och övergripande iakttagit hur trauma och post-traumatisk stress låser människor i en oförmåga att känna empati, en malande oro som skapar nervositet och aggressioner, men ibland kontrasteras av stunder med förstärkt livskänsla. I arbetet har Ettun tagit fasta på en ursprunglig betydelse av ordet känslor. Engelskans ”emotions” kommer från latinets emovere som handlar om att ”röra sig” att ”röra sig ut”.2 I detta symbolspråk blir statisk form knuten till trauma och rörelsen/handlingen blir en akt av medkänsla och empati. 2013 grundade Ettun dansgruppen The Moving Company i New York, vars namn har den dubbla betydelsen av ”rörelse/flytt” eller att bli känslomässigt ”rörd”. Konstnären har sedan dess skapat flera performanceverk med sina ”movers”, men även använt medlemmarnas kroppar i gipsavgjutningar som frusna rörelser, vilka presenteras som skulpturer i utställningen.

In 2015, an extensive project in four parts, a tetralogy, was initiated, A Mauve Bird with Yellow Teeth Red Feathers Green Feet and a Rose Belly, that will continue until 2018. It is based on a collection of short texts describing memory fragments from the artist’s childhood years in Jerusalem, that have been coded with colors and seasons. The first part, Blue, was presented as a performance at Watermill Center, and eventually took on the form of a video that was exhibited at Fridman Gallery in New York. The second part, Yellow, premiered as a performance in Bryant Park in April 2016, will be presented during the Revolve Performance Art Days in Uppsala in connection with the opening on May 12 at Uppsala Art Museum.

År 2015 påbörjades ett omfattande projekt i fyra delar, en tetralogi – A Mauve Bird with Yellow Teeth Red Feathers Green Feet and a Rose Belly som kommer att pågå till 2018. Bakgrunden är en samling korta texter av minnesfragment från uppväxtåren i Jerusalem, som kodats med färger och årstider.

Den första delen – Blå – presenterades som en performance på Watermill Center som så småningom tog formen av en video och visades i en utställning på Fridman Gallery i New York. Den andra delen – Gul – hade premiär som performance i Bryant Park i april 2016 och visas under Revolve Performance Art Days i Uppsala i samband med utställningens öppnande 12:e maj på Uppsala konstmuseum.

Although there’s a familiar and everyday aspect to the parts, a transformation occurs in the interplay between sculpture and performance brought on by the artist’s manner of combining found materials with casts of body parts in the form of assemblages. Sara Ahmed speaks of “wonder”. It’s about seeing the world as if it were for the first time, and in this manner, of being emotionally smitten through inspiration and engagement.3 It is in the combination of high and low, spanning everything from junk to classical sculpture, that this transformational process takes place. A rhythm emerges, where the flow of information and contemporary consumer culture dances by. We can detect human relationships, such as in the small and large violin cases featured in the sculpture Dad & Me, or the need to retreat as in Hiding, where a reticent form is marked with two orange workman’s gloves that recede into their shell.

Trots att delarna är bekanta och vardagliga sker ett förvandlingsmoment i skulptur och performance genom konstnärens sätt att kombinera upphittade material med kroppsliga avgjutningar i assemblage. Sara Ahmed talar om ”wonder” (på svenska ”under”). Det handlar om att se världen som om det vore för första gången och på detta sätt smittas känslomässigt genom inspiration och engagemang.3 I blandningen av högt och lågt, från skräp mot klassisk skulptur, förekommer detta förvandlingsmoment. En rytm framträder där samtidens varukultur och informationsflöde dansar förbi. Vi kan avläsa mänskliga relationer, som i det mindre och större fiolfodralet i skulpturen Dad & Me, eller känslor av att vilja dra sig tillbaka som i Hiding, där en sluten form markerats med två arbetshandskar i orange som drar sig in i sitt skal.

The mannequin is also a prominent theme; a white plaster hand waves a piece of red gossamer, the heel of a foot has been enhanced with an old furniture wheel. From a variety of perspectives, Tamar Ettun takes on the role of a modern-day flaneur, who, similarly to the surrealists in Paris, is drawn to the mystery of the streets and the desire and suggestiveness of the department store.4 André Breton praised the store-window mannequin, calling it le merveilleux (the marvelous), for its capacity to spur the imagination and appeal to our urges. Ettun draws the viewer into a vegetating state, much in the same way the early surrealists did in their time, that balances between dream and reality.

Ur flera perspektiv intar Tamar Ettun rollen som en modern flanör, som liksom surrealisterna i Paris sökte gatans mystik och varuhusets begär och suggestioner.4 André Breton hyllade skyltdockan och kallade den för det fantastiska (franskans le merveilleux) genom sin förmåga att appellera till fantasi och drifter. Ettun drar in betraktaren i ett vegeterande tillstånd likt den tidiga surrealismens konst, som balanserar mellan verklighet och dröm.

There is, however, a decisive difference of approach between the French 1930s and Ettun’s art of the present that has to do with perspective and work method. Representations of fragmented female bodies, such as those of Man Ray and Hans Bellmer, have often been interpreted as an act of castration in a Sigmund Freud sense. Ettun’s point of entry is an entirely different one. Her sculpture, Boob with a Nail implies a bodily experience and pain that has little to do with the voyeur perspective. Here, the plaster, as a fragile material, becomes pertinent and

meaning-bearing. One could say that, as a sculptor and choreographer, Ettun is able to manifest a “female gaze” or corporeal experience. This by no means prevents her, however, from being highly conscious of the “male gaze”, and perhaps even playing upon it. The French feminist psychoanalyst Luce Irigaray describes how the female surrealists subversively made use of a feigned femininity as a masquerade.5

In the blue video, the women’s bodies are both accentuated and rendered invisible, through the use of costumes in vibrant colors. The faces are covered, while a breast or an arm is exposed. By way of these exclamation marks, Ettun accentuates the body’s presence while at the same time allowing it to become pure form, something abstract that can be linked to a variety of things. A pale pink Dalia in the mouth symbolizes romance, but also provides the face with a physical enhancement resembling tentacles. Freud’s term Das Unheimlich or the uncanny aptly describes the phenomenon: something which feels at home, yet not. The familiar has become alien and the face as a distinct index has become amorphous and twisted. It is no coincidence that it is primarily women who execute these performative actions, and Tamar Ettun certainly knows her history of performance by gender conscious artists.6 The collective processes that The Moving Company creates through choreography and concept are based on the dancers’ varying backgrounds and experiences.

Tamar Ettun känner sin performancehistoria av genusmedvetna konstnärer.6 De kollektiva processer som The Moving Company skapar genom koreografi och koncept bygger på medlemmarnas olika bakgrund och kunskaper.

The Yellow Who Wants is about desire, a central theme in psychoanalytic theory. Sara Ahmed, among others, has shown how problematic the binary thinking of psychoanalysis is today, that builds upon the idea that the force of attraction can only be directed towards the other gender, with the male as norm.7

The Yellow Who Wants handlar om begär, ett ämne som är centralt i psykoanalytisk teoribildning.

Sara Ahmed, med flera, har visat hur problematiskt psykoanalysens binära tänkande är idag som bygger på att attraktionskraften enbart kan riktas mot det andra könet med mannen som norm.7

Hence, perhaps Sigmund Freud’s more fundamental notion Eros or the life drive and its opposite, Thanatos, the death drive is more apt here. Tamar Ettun’s yellow love phase is, so far at least, open and ongoing. We can see it as a positive basic principle, and as an ode to Spring and to all that flourishes, but also as a call to reflect on the manner in which a feminist Eros expresses itself. But let us return to the term “wonder” and the color yellow. A slightly unusual association comes to mind: Jag är nyfiken – en film om gult [I am Curious (Yellow)], Vilgot Sjöman’s playful film from 1967. Although it questioned the era’s authoritarian and militaristic society, in retrospect the film is remembered primarily for its experimental approach and liberated sexuality. Perhaps the term “wonder” can also be interpreted as the curiosity expressed by the open experiments of the '60s, of which performance art was a part. Also typical of the era was the hopeful and almost naïve expectation of a new and improved society. Through her abstracted imagery, Tamar Ettun takes a different path.

Vi kan läsa den som en positiv grundprincip som en hyllning till våren och allt som spirar. Men också fundera på hur ett feministiskt Eros tar sitt uttryck. Låt oss återgå till begreppet ”wonder” och färgen gul. En udda association går till Jag är nyfiken – en film om gult. Vilgot Sjömans lekfulla film från 1967 ifrågasatte tidens auktoritära och militaristiska samhälle, men är i efterhand mest känd för sin experimentlust och frigjorda sexualitet. Kanske kan begreppet ”wonder” också översättas till förundran och den nyfikenhet som 60-talets öppna undersökningar, bland annat genom performancekonsten gav uttryck för. Här fanns också en förhoppningsfull och närmast naiv förväntan på ett annat och bättre samhälle. Tamar Ettun prövar en annan väg genom sitt abstraherande formspråk.

Ahmed explains how emotions operate both collectively and on an individual level; that emotions can arise in an individual and influence what the people around them are feeling, just as the emotions of an individual can be initiated by the emotions of the surrounding crowd.8 It is this interaction and exchange of emotions that forms the distinction between the “I” and “we”. Ettun describes her work process as a “handheld” history that, in a manner comparable to that of a handheld camera, presents an excerpt or personal perspective of larger social issues. Through the use of subjective imagery indicating a sensibility for the things around us, Ettun offers an opening to a possible transformation process. Through “wonder” we experience the world with new eyes, but this is not about experiences that are cut off from previous ones. Instead, these new experiences contribute to a radically changed relationship to the past, which is seen in an entirely new light. Ahmed writes: ”…wonder is a passion that motivates the desire to keep looking...”9 .

Ahmed redogör för hur känslor verkar både kollektivt och på en individnivå, där känslor kan uppstå hos en individ och prägla upplevelsen av omgivningen, liksom en individs känslor kan skapas utifrån omgivningens känslor.8 Det är i detta växelspel och utbyte av känslor som distinktionen mellan ett “jag” och “vi” skapas. Ettun beskriver sin arbetsprocess som en ”handhållen” historia, som likt handkameran presenterar ett utsnitt eller personligt perspektiv på större samhälleliga frågor.

Genom ett subjektivt bildspråk av sensibilitet för tingen omkring oss öppnar Ettun för en förändringsprocess som kan bli möjlig. Genom “wonder” upplever vi världen med nya ögon, men det handlar inte om upplevelser som är avskurna från tidigare erfarenhet utan bidrar istället till en radikalt ändrad relation till det förflutna, vilket ses ur ett nytt ljus.

Ahmed skriver: ”…wonder is a passion that motivates the desire to keep looking...”9.

In Philosophy, a distinction has long been observed between two forms of love: Eros, conceived as intense desire; and Agape, the Christian ideal of selfless caring. In his religious writings, Kierkegaard advocated for Agape as the only true love. Unconditional and disinterested, Agape is offered to the other not as a reward for his virtues or accomplishments, nor with an eye to receiving love in return.

Eros, on the other hand, Kierkegaard condemned as selfish and unstable. It aims at pleasure and at possessing the other, and it is aroused by the other’s qualities: his beauty and coolness, perhaps his prestigious job. Yet such qualities are not intrinsic to the beloved – he stands to lose each one of them. Then his lover will also cease to love him. This erotic love, it turns out, was never really about the beloved as a person. Erotic desire is fleeting and deceptive, and sensuousness cannot guide us to the good.

Kierkegaard associated erotic love with paganism – and indeed Ancient Greek culture is full of representations of sex and celebrations of sensuous pleasure. But also in Jewish mythology, we find an attitude toward sensuality radically different from that of Kierkegaard’s Christian dogmas. Consider Isaac, one of the fathers of the Jewish people. Feeling his life nearing its end, he addresses his son Esau with one last wish: that Esau go out to the fields with his bow and arrow, bring home some game and cook his father a tasty stew. The old man has a craving for meat with its taste of wild nature, a last taste of life.

Tamar Ettun’s work on desire calls us to question the old dichotomy of Agape and Eros – specifically, the idea that desire is shallow and selfish. If it resounds with any tradition, it is the Hebrew Bible’s pathos of bodily pleasure. “Part: Yellow” presents

Inom filosofin har man länge skilt mellan två slags kärlek: Eros, kärleken som begär; och Agape, det kristna kärleksidealet av osjälvisk omsorg. Søren Kierkegaard propagerade i sina mest religiösa verk för Agape som den enda sanna kärleken. Kärlek måste vara ovillkorlig och bör varken utgöra en belöning för den älskades förträfflighet och åstadkommanden, eller ha som mål att själv belönas med kärlek. Eros, å andra sidan, förkastades av Kierkegaard som något själviskt och flyktigt. Denna intensiva passion har njutning som mål och vill besitta den åtrådde. Den härrör sig ur en attraktion till dennes egenskaper: hans skönhet och coolhet, kanske hans prestigefyllda jobb. Men sådana egenskaper tillhör ingen människas innersta väsen – med tiden kan han förlora dem. Följaktligen upphör han då också att vara älskvärd. Det visar sig alltså i slutändan att den erotiska kärleken aldrig egentligen hade honom som föremål. Det erotiska är tillfälligt och skenbart, och det sensuella visar oss inte vägen till det goda.

Kierkegaard förknippade den erotiska kärleken med det hedniska. Den antika grekiska kulturen är fylld av sexuella referenser och hyllningar till det sensuella. Men också i den judiska mytologin återfinns en inställning till sensualiteten som skiljer sig drastiskt från Kierkegaards kristna dogmer. Ta som exempel Isak, en av det judiska folkets anfäder. Då han känner på sig att döden är nära ber han sin son Esau att ge sig ut på fälten på jakt efter vilt, och laga en gryta åt sin far. Den gamles sista vilja är att få äta en bit kött, känna smaken av den vilda naturen, smaken av livet självt.

Tamar Ettuns serie av verk om begär ifrågasätter den gamla dikotomin mellan Agape och Eros – framför allt uppfattningen att begäret är något ytligt och själviskt. Om hennes konst kan kopplas till någon tradition är det just det patos med vilket den judiska Bibeln beskriver kroppslig njutning. I ”Part:

desire as life-affirming – something Kierkegaard would agree with in his more Romantic moments.

I would venture to claim that we never feel more alive than in the early days of a romantic infatuation.

Nor is this feeling of life narcissistic: it is a feeling of being present to the world. The beloved – indeed the world as a whole – is thrown into relief by desire. Everything beautiful and significant stands out for the lover, glowing with its inner light. The lover’s world is a meaningful cosmos where things reveal their essences on their surface.

In its acuteness, desire resembles suffering more than any other experience. The nail that penetrates a nipple in Ettun’s cast sculpture appears at first glance as a straightforward image of pain inflicted by violence from without. Yet when we notice that the nail penetrates the skin from within, the image acquires another dimension. It evokes at once pain, arousal and pleasure, experiences in which our whole being is concentrated in a single feeling, a single point.

Like the stiletto heels stacked on one another, forcing their bearer to her knees, desire draws us out of ourselves, the finite body bursting at its seams with the soul which craves connection with something beyond it. Those high-heeled shoes picture Eros wanting not to possess but to be seen and desired by another subject. Eros wants to beget Eros: it wants the recognition inherent in reciprocated desire. The times we spend dressing up and making ourselves pretty for a date are wonderful rituals of anticipation and anxiety, all wrapped up in an affirmation of ourselves as capable of being desired, and of the other as someone worth being desired by.

On her way to meet her beloved, her soul fluttering in her stomach, the lover feels naked, even though she is dressed up – or perhaps because of it. For by wearing her prettiest gown, she has exposed her inner desire on her skin for all to see. Desire makes of her a bouquet of nerves, fragile like the fishnet a lone hand stretches out in Ettun’s sculpture. She 34

Denna känsla är inte själv-centrerad: den består i upplevelsen att vara närvarande i världen. Både den åtrådde och världen som helhet framstår som bilder i hög upplösning och med hög kontrast, där allt som är vackert och angeläget blir mer synligt, som av ett inre sken. Den förälskades värld är ett meningsfullt kosmos där saker och ting uppenbarar sig i sitt esse.

Den skärpa vi finner i begäret återfinns också i lidande. Spiken som genomborrar en bröstvårta i en av Ettuns skulpturer ter sig vid första anblick som en enkel bild av smärta förorsakad av yttre våld.

Men då vi noterar att spiken kommer inifrån antar bilden ytterligare en dimension. Den frammanar idén om åtrå och njutning såväl som smärta – upplevelser där hela vårt väsen ställs på sin spets och koncentreras i en enda känsla, en enda punkt.

Skorna med stilettklackar som staplats inuti varandra tvingar ner sin bärare på marken där hon måste krypa fram. Genom begäret pressas den begränsade kroppen till sin bristningsgräns. Själen vill inte veta av gränser. Den begär kontakt med något utanför sig själv. De högklackade skorna framställer Eros inte som viljan att besitta och äga, men som viljan att bli sedd och åtrådd av en annan människa.

Eros vill inspirera begär också i den andre: genom åtrån söker vi den bekräftelse som består i besvarad åtrå. De stunder vi tillbringar ensamma framför spegeln för att klä upp oss är underbara ritualer där nervositet blandas med spänning och förväntan. Genom att göra oss fina bekräftar vi oss själva som åtråvärda och den andre som någon värd att åtrås av.

När den förälskade med själen fladdrande i maggropen går för att möta sin älskade känner hon sig naken trots att hon är klädd – eller kanske just därför. För genom att bära sin finaste klänning är det som om hon exponerat hela sitt inre i sitt yttre, till allmän beskådan. Begäret gör henne till en bukett av nerver, skör som det trådnät en ensam hand

senses that her love is as visible as that cloud of deep blood red, and that she is at this moment nothing but this hand, this offer extended to her beloved.

Ettun’s sculptures are accompanied by experimental dances, and dancing is indeed a particularly appropriate medium for the theme of love. The fear of rejection, of putting the beloved off by making too rash a move, prompts us to dance around the subject, speaking in code, attending carefully to the other in order to adjust our own moves to his. Dancing is also the most immediately sexual form of artistic expression. In the Moving Company’s performances, dance is sometimes reduced to a single experience of sensuality and touch, intensified by repetition. The oranges falling from the sky are appetizing not only to our sense of taste but also to our sense of touch. When a stretched out hand catches and squeezes them, penetrating the flesh through the peel and releasing the juice, the effect is quasi-pornographic. The viewer is afforded a strange catharsis: her tactile appetite has been gratified.

Some of Ettun’s sculptures are constructed out of found objects. Often these objects bear no obvious relation to what the sculpture as a whole represents.

In this sense, they are like metaphors, which evoke an idea by means of a combination of words that do not literally express that idea. The complicated relation between parts and whole in Ettun’s sculptures is reminiscent of some of the far-fetched metaphors in the Song of Songs, where, for example, the beloved’s nose is said to be like a tower in Lebanon that looks toward Damascus. The distance between the figurative and the literal leaves ample room for the viewer’s imagination to play with different associations and interpretations.

It recently occurred to me how nice it would be to have a lover in another city, so that I would have to take a bus to go see him, savoring from my window seat the world as it looks through desire, from within its warm yellow bubble. Once lovers are together, the impressions are so strong

Skulpturerna kompletteras med dans, och just dans är en synnerligen passande konstform för ämnet begär. Rädslan för att bli avvisad och för att den älskade ska skrämmas iväg av en alltför vågad invit driver oss till att dansa kring ämnet, uttrycka oss i antydningar snarare än i klarspråk, och att noga observera den andres gester och rörelser så att vi kan anpassa oss till dem. Dans är också den av konstformerna som har mest direkt koppling till sexualiteten. I The Moving Companys föreställningar reduceras dansen ibland till enstaka upplevelser av sensualitet, av beröring, intensifierade genom upprepning. De fallande apelsinerna retar inte bara smaksinnets aptit utan även känselns. När en utsträckt hand fångar dem och klämmer på dem tills fingrarna tränger igenom skalet till det saftiga köttet och juicen rinner ut uppnås en närmast pornografisk effekt. Betraktaren erbjuds en märklig katarsis då känslosinnets begär tillfredsställs.

En del av Ettuns skulpturer är tillverkade av upphittade objekt. Ofta har dessa saker ingen uppenbar anknytning till det som skulpturerna som slutförda helheter representerar. På så sätt är de som språkliga metaforer, som ju framkallar idéer genom att kombinera ord som inte i sig själva uttrycker dessa idéer. Det komplicerade förhållandet mellan delarna och helheten i Ettuns skulpturer påminner om Höga Visans långsökta metaforer, där den älskades näsa, till exempel, liknas vid ett torn i Libanon som blickar mot Damaskus. Avståndet mellan det figurativa och det bokstavliga lämnar ett stort spelrum för fantasin att prova olika tolkningar och leka fritt med associationer.

Det slog mig nyligen hur underbart det vore att ha en romans med en man i en annan stad, så att jag fick ta bussen för att åka och träffa honom, och då från min fönsterplats kunde avnjuta världen som den ser ut genom begärets varma gula bubbla. När man väl är tillsammans med sin älskade är intryck-

and succeed one another so rapidly as to defy this kind of enjoyment. Through anticipation of future meetings and remembrance of past ones, we regard love with the benefit of an aesthetic distance.

Pre- and reliving life through the imagination in this way enriches it: it fulfills Nietzsche’s vision of living one’s life as though it were a work of art.

In Ettun’s work, desire’s ephemeral and elusive urges and gestures are embodied, allowing us to contemplate them and revel in them, holding onto them a moment longer.

TAMAR ETTUN Tamar Ettun (b.1982, Jerusalem) is a Brooklyn based sculptor and performance artist, she is the founder and director of The Moving Company. Ettun received her MFA from Yale School of Art in 2010 where she was awarded the Alice English Kimball Fellowship. She studied at Cooper Union in 2007, while earning her BFA from Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Fine Art. Her numerous exhibitions and performances include: Bryant Park, Sculpture Center, Diana Lowenstein Gallery, Fridman Gallery, The Watermill Center, Madison Square Park, e-flux, Transformer, The Queens Museum, Braverman Gallery, Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, Andrea Meislin Gallery, PERFORMA 13, PERFORMA 11, PERFORMA 09.
