We we have an opportunity as healthcare providers, facilitators, designers and consumers of healthcare to improve the hospital model as a response to ever rising costs.”
The UMC Emergency Department stands as one of the region’s most vital healthcare facilities, serving over 120,000 patients annually through its dedicated adult and pediatric care areas. Within this dynamic environment, the Emergency Department’s Observation and Fast-Track Unit provides an essential bridge between emergency care and inpatient treatment—delivering acute care to patients within a 24-hour period before they are either safely discharged or admitted for further care.
The recent renovation of this high-demand facility was thoughtfully conceived to address and overcome the inherent limitations of the original structure. Designers responded to the challenges—most notably a lack of natural light and outdated interior finishes—with a transformative vision. The result is a reimagined, openconcept layout infused with contemporary design elements and a soothing, cohesive aesthetic. The new space emphasizes warmth, calm, and clarity—qualities that are especially important in an emergency care setting, where anxiety and stress can be overwhelming.
Soft, ambient lighting, warm material palettes, and intuitive spatial organization foster a sense of serenity and support healing from the moment patients and families walk through the doors. The upgraded environment is not only visually appealing but functionally efficient—designed to support rapid response times, seamless care delivery, and improved patient outcomes. The remodeled UMC Emergency Department is a testament to how thoughtful design can enhance both the physical space and the emotional experience of care, ultimately reinforcing UMC’s mission to serve the community with excellence, compassion, and innovation.

UMC entrusted EV&A Architects with the transformative redesign of the top two floors of its renowned Trauma Center, reimagining spaces previously used for administrative functions into a state-of-the-art, 32-bed Intermediate Care Unit. This new unit includes eight advanced isolation rooms, reflecting UMC’s continued commitment to meeting the evolving healthcare needs of the Las Vegas community with both innovation and compassion.
The comprehensive scope of the project extended beyond the clinical floors. It included the strategic renovation of the lower levels to accommodate two new high-capacity patient elevators, each with secure vestibules to ensure safe and private transitions for patients and families. This critical infrastructure upgrade enhances vertical circulation and enables seamless access to the new care units above. Upon arrival, patients and their loved ones are welcomed by a gracious receptionist and introduced to a serene and spacious waiting area, thoughtfully designed to reduce stress and offer comfort. Warm finishes, soft lighting, and generous amenities create an inviting environment that supports healing from the very first encounter.
On each newly renovated clinical floor, private patient rooms line the perimeter to maximize access to natural light and provide a quiet, restorative atmosphere. At the heart of each level lies a centralized nurse station, strategically positioned to allow for unobstructed sightlines and rapid response times, enhancing both patient safety and caregiver efficiency. The result is a modern, healing-focused environment that elevates the patient experience while supporting clinical excellence—a true reflection of UMC’s mission and EV&A’s design expertise.

Surgery centers can—and should—offer more than just clinical precision; they should foster comfort, peace of mind, and a reassuring sense of care. While the ultimate goal remains your safe return home, the experience leading up to that moment matters. With this belief at the heart of our design philosophy, we created a surgical environment that emphasizes serenity and family-centered care—ensuring that every patient feels calm, confident, and cared for from arrival to discharge.
Completed in late 2014, the state-of-the-art ENT/ASC facility stands as one of the most advanced ambulatory surgery centers in Las Vegas. Housing three fully equipped Class “A” operating rooms, the center meets the highest standards of surgical excellence, all while surrounding patients and their families with a setting designed to ease anxiety and promote well-being. The building’s modern design blends cutting-edge functionality with architectural sophistication. Its sleek exterior is composed of high-performance glazing, rooftop skylights that bathe interiors in natural light, contemporary metal paneling, and warm, locally quarried Southwestern stone—materials chosen to reflect both innovation and a sense of regional identity.
Inside, every detail—from the calming finishes to the intuitive layout—was curated to create a healing atmosphere. The flow of the space supports efficient clinical operations while ensuring patients remain at the center of the experience. Waiting areas are spacious and inviting, private pre- and post-op rooms offer tranquility and privacy, and thoughtful touches throughout speak to the dignity and respect patients deserve. This is more than a surgery center— it is a place of trust, where advanced care meets compassionate design, and where the journey back to health begins in comfort and ends with reunion.

Situated in the master-planned Summerlin community of Las Vegas, Universal Health Services (formerly United Health Services) engaged JMA and architect Edward Vance to expand the Summerlin Hospital Medical Center, initially completed in the early 1990s. The project featured a vertical three-story addition atop an existing care wing, carefully integrating modern clinical spaces into the continually growing campus.
This expansion introduced essential healthcare services, including an expanded Obstetrics Department, a new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), and increased Medical/Surgical and Adult ICU bed capacity. These improvements were thoughtfully developed to meet the community’s evolving needs and to strengthen the hospital’s ability to deliver high-quality, patient-focused care.
A key construction challenge was building directly over the active third-floor ICU without interfering with vital medical operations. Through strategic planning, innovative building solutions, and close coordination with hospital staff, the team executed the expansion with minimal disruption—achieving a seamless transition into a next-generation healthcare environment.
The finished product is a cutting-edge vertical addition that respects the original architecture of the hospital while advancing its mission to deliver top-tier medical care. Beyond increasing capacity, the project elevated the hospital’s potential to serve the region with greater excellence, compassion, and innovation—setting a new standard for patient-focused design and clinical performance.

UMC of Southern Nevada continues to serve the region with unwavering dedication to patient-centered care through a series of transformative improvements across multiple levels of its hospital campus. These enhancements reflect a commitment to clinical excellence, operational efficiency, and the overall patient and provider experience.
On the first floor, upgrades were made to three state-of-the-art operating rooms, advanced resuscitation bays, eleven high-acuity intensive care units, an angiography suite, a CT imaging room, and adjacent support stations—each carefully designed to streamline critical care delivery. The second floor renovations brought a revitalized pediatric emergency department and a specialized pediatric intensive care area, featuring private hospital rooms and a fully equipped clinical support hub.
The third floor now houses a modernized pediatric clinic, an upgraded imaging center with advanced diagnostic capabilities, and a full-service pharmacy, ensuring continuity of care from diagnosis to treatment. The fourth and fifth floors saw significant improvements to UMC’s administrative suites, enhancing spaces used by both physicians and hospital leadership to foster collaboration and operational excellence.
Two clinical laboratories were reimagined with a unified patient entrance and shared control room, increasing efficiency and access. Additionally, a new pre-operative and recovery suite was created, offering 10 beds and a centralized nursing station to support seamless surgical care and patient comfort.

1993 (Original) Renovations are on-going
Located on the storied St. Rose de Lima campus in Henderson, the hospital partnered with JMA and architect Edward Vance to design the latest expansion of its Emergency Department. Prompted by the region’s rapid growth and the hospital’s ongoing mission to provide timely, exceptional care, the project called for 13 additional treatment beds. Site limitations and the close proximity of an operational heliport added layers of complexity to both the design and construction processes.
In response, the design team conceived a distinctive circular layout that maximized space efficiency while streamlining clinical operations. Anchoring the new addition is a centrally located, round nurse station—strategically designed to offer clear sightlines to all patient rooms, allowing for rapid response and optimal care delivery.
The existing Emergency Department was simultaneously renovated to house fast-track services and patient admitting, creating a seamless transition between old and new. This thoughtful integration of spaces supports a more fluid experience for patients and staff alike, further advancing St. Rose de Lima Hospital’s reputation for innovation and compassionate, community-focused emergency care.

Located on a sweeping 160-acre site in North Las Vegas, this state-of-the-art 882,000-square-foot regional medical campus redefines the standard for veteran care in the 21st century. The expansive facility includes a 90-bed acute care hospital, a 90-bed mental health unit, 23 comprehensive outpatient clinics, a 120-bed skilled nursing facility, and a high-efficiency central plant—all thoughtfully master-planned to provide seamless, integrated care across the continuum of health services.
At the heart of the Veterans Administration’s vision was a clear directive: to create a facility that anticipates future needs while avoiding the pitfalls of static, inefficient design. Embracing this challenge, the RTKL + JMA design team developed a modular and highly adaptable approach rooted in the VA Building System. This allowed for flexibility in clinical programming and infrastructure expansion while ensuring operational efficiency and patient-centered care remained at the forefront.
Every aspect of the design—spatial organization, technology integration, and infrastructure systems— was calibrated to support evolving healthcare delivery models. The result is not just a hospital, but a dynamic healing environment that serves as a national model for veteran healthcare. Forward-looking in both form and function, this groundbreaking facility reflects a deep commitment to those who have served, while setting a new benchmark for the future of medical architecture.

“Hope Christian Health Center is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), non-profit, faithbased family medicine health center located in North Las Vegas, NV. Their mission is to demonstrate God’s love to the Las Vegas community by providing excellent, affordable care to everyone regardless of their ability to pay.”
Teaming up with Rafael Construction, EV&A proudly secured the design-build commission for a new 27,000-square-foot Recuperative Care Center. Focused on creating healing environments, our design approach ensures that the facility benefits patients, families, physicians, administration, and staff alike. With therapeutic landscapes and healing elements at the core of the concept, the center addresses the physical, mental, and emotional needs of all who enter. Situated on just over an acre along North Main Street, south of Owens Avenue, the two-story facility is designed to wrap around a central courtyard, bathing its interior spaces in natural, healing light.
Our planning strategies prioritized intuitive circulation and wayfinding, ensuring the building feels accessible and easy to navigate for everyone. Simple yet impactful design elements—such as abundant daylighting, open spaces, and natural materials—are integrated throughout to foster recovery and a sense of well-being. Every room and space within the facility was carefully crafted to maximize access to natural light and outdoor views, enhancing the therapeutic atmosphere. By blending functional design with elements of nature and intentional planning, the Recuperative Care Center creates a space where recovery is not just possible but actively encouraged. This project embodies EV&A’s commitment to designing environments that promote healing, comfort, and wellbeing for all who experience them.

Through initiatives such as workforce development, community employment, inclusive housing, arts, and social recreation, Opportunity Village has created opportunities for independence, integration, and personal fulfillment. The ambitious 17-acre master plan is designed to foster community and inclusion while addressing the unique needs of individuals with disabilities. The campus will feature a Program Services Building, providing vital support and resources, along with a café that doubles as a retail and warehouse space to promote skill-building and employment opportunities. At the heart of the campus is a centralized Clubhouse, surrounded by 94 units of program housing, all thoughtfully arranged to create a sense of connection. The Clubhouse is complemented by a pool, gardens, and parks, offering residents spaces for relaxation, recreation, and socialization.
