The History Of Turnberry
The Turnberry hotel is an iconic and revered destination, a landmark in Ayrshire and in world golf for nigh on 120 years.
With a long and illustrious history, it first opened its doors in 1906 as a Station Hotel, with its own railway station located on the grounds. A haven for wealthy families, it allowed them to spend their summer on the glorious Ayrshire coast, or the Sunshine Corner as it was often referred to.
Standing sentinel above two links courses, including the legendary Ailsa course, the scene wasn’t always so idyllic. In both World Wars, Turnberry was pressed into service, being commissioned as a hospital afresh and the courses converted into a Royal Air Force flying school.
Over the last century, Turnberry has hosted a range of prestigious golf tournaments including Open Championships, Senior Champions, Amateur Championships and the Ladies British Open.

“I remember every one of his shots. And every one of mine.”
