project 1:

bathhouse in Ioannina

The SOMA project concerns the creation of public baths in the lakeside area of the city of Ioannina. Since ancient times, baths have been a meeting point, a ritual, a community space. Today, the baths are designed for a rural society, in an effort to re-home and decolonize the body. The manifested body, now naked, experiences the spiritual journey, passing through the stages of purification, sanitization and enjoyment. The bather heals his body and spirit.

The BODY is divided into two worlds, the above (outdoors) and the beyound (underground) with only one single connecting link: a hole that joins them.

In the outdoor space, pockets of coexistence are formed through anarchic volumes - which are detached from the already existing lembarchae in the study area - hinting at the idea of what remains as a view of ruins.

The baths are an underground structure, where the feeling of a natural black stone cave is created. The only trace of human intervention: the tile. Thus, the experience of the ritual is enhanced, which is also reflected spatially with the downward course: from cold water, to lukewarm and finally to hot.

floor and another at a five-meter level. It houses the reception area, temporary exhibitions, and the library. To the right, the three university museums are located: the Museum of Typography, the Folklore Museum, and the History of Medicine Museum, along with the historical photographic archive of Kostas Balafas. Overlooking the Frotzou Forest is the volume dedicated to student groups: theater, film, radio, dance, and the university orchestra, along with a café and the museum’s gift shop. At the heart of the complex is the university’s ground-floor multifunctional space—flexible, with custom-designed furniture ready to accommodate every event of the university community.

poster, advertisement, and souvenir

Legal term referring to a private discussion behind closed doors Homonymous with Jean-Paul Sartre’s play No Exit (Huis Clos), where he defines hell as a space of closed doors—specifically, a room where three characters are condemned to observe and be observed by each other endlessly. Through the interactions of the characters, Sartre explores his ideas on “the gaze” and the perpetual ontological struggle of seeing oneself as an object through the consciousness of another.

The camera, as another form of gaze, activates this external consciousness—a way through which we become objects of observation. It is the tangible visualization of the self as an object. The camera records and publicizes moments of private transactions. In In Camera, a performance exhibition, the private transaction involves the visitor and the exhibits. The dual nature of both visitor and exhibit/performer—as observers and objects of observation—plays with the roles and expectations of an exhibition.

It is a rejection of predetermined roles, a call to unravel Ariadne’s thread. Each exhibit is a step deeper into the labyrinth. A step closer to the other consciousness. A journey of ascent and descent. Man confronted by man, man confronted by himself.

The 11 objects were designed by students of the Department of Architecture at the University of Ioannina as part of the course Special Design Topics II.

Caution: The space is monitored by a closed-circuit camera system.

concept drawing of the airport

side view of the entrance and the gates of the airport

The Airport is a shared space. An intermediate place for many. A necessary solution for others. The airplane of the Eleonas Airport is about to take on the role of the everyday bus in Greece’s daily life. The Internetwork Project revolves around the concept of networks—both local and translocal. Emphasis is placed on networks that are directly or indirectly connected to the airport, as well as on the access routes to it.

The design of the building is determined by the scale of transportation, and the architectural syntax is articulated through references to networks and infrastructure projects. A key undertaking in this proposal is the re-interpretation of the concept of travel, viewed through the lens of objectives related to tourism. The shortest path between two points (A+B) is the straight line that connects them. Node (A), easily accessible to the public in various ways, marks the beginning of the straight line that connects it to the runway (B).

The terminal represents a simplified analysis of the building program of an airport, which is typically complex, like a tangled ball of yarn. Here, however, the yarn unravels along this straight line, and the spaces become intermediate stops along this journey.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-t7o4Duvqfc in a state of romanticism

Romanticism is defined as the rejection of the prevailing way of life in pursuit of passion and an emphasis on emotion. It represents the supremacy of emotions over logic. A romantic individual seeks what they have defined as ideals, without being comforted by the doctrines and perceptions of the era they live in. They act spontaneously, following an independent path driven by their inner psyche.
