UNIVERSIT The European Universities Football FOOTBA Championship successfully finished on July CHAMPION 26, 2008 in Kiev (UKR). The EUC Basketball was BASKETBALL organised this year from July CHAMPIONSHIP 21-27 in Novi Sad (SRB).

NOVI SAD, Serbia NOVI SAD 2008 July 21 - 27, 2008 The experienced Organising Committee, which has already hosted two EUC in the past, welcomed this year 18 men and 13 women teams from 16 European countries. In men competition, the gold medals went to students from the Vytautas Magnus University (LTU) who won in the finals against the University of Belgrade (SRB) with 97:70.

The team from Lithuania was a winner also in the previous two years. In the match for the third place, the Frederick University (CYP) won the University of Malaga (ESP) 60:57. In women competition the Russian State Agricultural University (RUS) and Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan (POL) played for the gold medals. The team from Russia won 67:57. The Polytechnic University of Madrid (ESP) and the University of Belgrade (SRB) played for the bronze. The girls from Belgrade won 69:65. EUC Handball was organised in the The HANDBA City of Nis (SRB). 15 men and 6 women CHAMPION teams from 13 European countries particiNIĹ , Serbia NIĹ 2008 July 21 - 26, 2008 pated on the championship organised by the University Sports Federation of Serbia and the University Sports Federation of Nis. In women competition, the title of the Champion went to the University of Vincent Pol Lubin. The best scorer was Jasna Djukic from University of Kragujevac (SRB), the Fair play award went to the University of Porto (POR). The University of Ljubljana (SLO) won in men competition. The best scorer was Caldas Andre from the ISMAI Maia Higher Institute University (POR).

The Fair Play Award as won by the University of Cyprus (CYP).

The European Universities Rowing Championship 2008 successfully finished in Zagreb. The event was organised by the ZAGREB 2008 Croatian University Sports Association, the University of Zagreb and the Zagreb Rowing Federation from August 28-30, 2008. More than 400 participants from 14 European countries participated on the championship. The EUSA Badminton Championships BADMINT were held in Krakow (POL). 110 particiCHAMPION pants from 14 Universities and 10 countries KRAKOW, Poland KRAKOW 2008 September 10 - 14 enjoyed the playing facilities of a very high standard, as well as a cultural programme, which enabled competitors to visit the world heritage sites of Poland. The championship was of a very high standard with a number of athletes taking part fresh from the Beijing Olympics.

The University of Lodz was represented by world-class players, of whom four were Olympians including Robert Mateusiak who reached the quarterfinals of the Olympics in men’s doubles and mixed doubles, and Przemysław Wacha who has a world ranking of 12 in men’s singles.

At the end of the championships, the EUSA flag was passed to the representative of University of Geneva, who will host the 6th Championship in June 2009. The championship will be part of the celebrations of 450 years of the University of Geneva.

EUSA PRESIDENT VISITED LJUBLJANA

GENERAL ASSEMBLY 2008

The EUSA President Mr. Alberto Gualtieri visited the EUSA Office in Ljubljana for a working meeting with the EUSA Secretary General Matjaž Pečovnik. The meeting took place at the new EUSA offices in the Main Building of the University of Ljubljana. The Agenda for the next EUSA EC Meeting, the EUSA General Assembly and the Activity Plan were the main topics of the meeting. Mr. Gualtieri also visited the venues of the EUSA Convention for the EUC organisers, which will take place from November 7-9, 2008 in Ljubljana and met with Mr. Otmar Kugovnik, the President of the Slovenian University Sports Association. The EUSA President also stopped in Koper where the World University Futsal Championship was organised.

All the EUSA Member Associations are invited to participate on the 10th EUSA General Assembly, which will be organised from December 5-7, 2008 in Paris (FRA). The event will take place in the French Olympic Committee HQ. All the information have already been distributed to the members and are available also on the EUSA website. EUC CONVENTION 2008 As we have already announced, the EUSA Convention for the organisers of the EUC 2009 will be organised on November 8, 2008 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It is expected that one or two representatives of each Organising Committee take part on the Convention. During the Convention EUSA will give a general briefing on the terms and conditions as well as on examples for best practice. Subsequently the Technical Delegates will meet with the Organising Committees of their respective sport in order to check all details of the organisation. EUSA MEETINGS The next EUSA Executive Committee Meeting will take place on October 19-20, 2008 in Belgrade, Serbia. EUSA Student Commission will meet in Hamburg on October 11, 2008.

EUSA ON WUC GOLF

During the 12th World University Golf Championship held in Sun City, South Africa, EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri and EC Member Leonz Eder, who was the Chairperson of the FISUCISCA, met not only with the leaders of University Sport South Africa, but also with high ranked officials of the Republic of South Africa. During the banquet after the opening ceremony they were sitting next to Deputy President Madam MlamboNgcuka and Ms Edna Molewa, the Premier of North West.

Among the 18 countries taking part at the WUC Golf 2008 at the famous Gary Player Golf Course in Sun City, 11 countries came from Europe, such as Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

MEMBER NEWS SWITZERLAND The Swiss University Sport Federation (SUSF) is actually mainly involved in three fields. On the European level it gives support to the University Sport of Geneva in the preparation of the EUC Badminton 2009.

This project in Geneva is lead by Antonio Latella and Markos Michaelides. SUSF-President Andreas Csonka and Managing Director Leonz Eder are involved in the evaluation for a possible Swiss candidature for the Winter Universiade 2017. And as the State of Switzerland will adapt the federal law regarding Sport, all the University Sports Directors are currently working on a proposal to officially fix the sport at the universities in this new law, which is not the case in the old law. Finally a group of more than fifty donators of the SUSF were invited to visit the new “Home of FIFA” in Zürich, where they met also with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.

SLOVENIA

The 4th European Universities Handball Championship will take place from June 15-21, 2009 in Ljubljana (SLO). The Slovenian University Sports Association and the Sports Association of the University of Ljubljana have already established the Organising Committee, which will be led by the Rector of the University of Ljubljana, prof. dr. Andreja Kocijančič. The Mayor of the City Ljubljana, Mr. Zoran Jankovič is the chairman of the Honorary Board. EUSA CUPS TAEKWONDO The European Universities Taekwondo Cup 2008 will take place in Moscow from December 6-7, 2008. The event got full support from the Russian Student Sports Union, Moscow Taekwondo Federation, SSU and Moscow Government - Moscow Government Department of Physical Culture and Sports. FISU NEWS WORLD UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS The majority of the 30 championships that are organised this year have already finished. The remaining six events will be organised in the next months. You can find the results and reports from all the events on www.fisu.net

UNIVERSIADES Next year FISU organises Winter Universiade in Harbin (CHN) and Summer Universiade in Belgrade (SRB). The preparations for these two events are in full swing. These days Harbin hosts the Heads of Delegations for the Inspection Visit. The countries interested in organisation of Summer or Winter Universiade in 2015 should send the letter of intention to FISU by October 15, 2008.
