EUSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING 01-2007 EUSA Executive Committee had its first meeting in 2007, held from February 22 to 25 in the FISU Headquarters in Brussels. The meeting started with welcome speech from Roch Campana, FISU Secretary General. EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri thanked FISU for the organisation of the meeting and welcomed all the members of the Executive Committee and the two invited NUSA presidents, Leonardo Coiana (ITA) and Ceslovas Garbaliauskas (LIT).

The EC discussed a lot of items concerning the European Universities Championships, which are very successful both in quality and quantity, approved the Technical Regulations for the EUC 2007, finalized the calendar for 2008, attributed patronages to different sport events and accepted the new EUC protocol, prepared by EUSA SecretaryGeneral Matjaz Pecovnik.

The EC nominated new members for the Students Commission and got an overview over the different internation-

al contacts, EUSA and in particular its President Gualtieri maintain regularly. As a very active and well structured Continental Association, EUSA is very happy to have good relations especially with FISU. This fact is also supported by the presence of Sinisa Jasnic (SRB), Leonz Eder (SUI) and Kemal Tamer (TUR) in both the EUSA and FISU Executive Committees.

The next EUSA EC meeting will be held in Magglingen, Switzerland from May 31 to June 3, 2007.

EUSA NEWS EUSA OFFICE HAS MOVED The office of the European University Sports Association has moved to a new location. Since 2004, the EUSA Office has been hosted by the Slovenian University Sports Association (SUSA) at the International Center for Promotion of Enterprises. Now the Rector of the University of Ljubljana Mrs Andreja Kocijancic offered to house EUSA. The new offices are now located at the Faculty of Sport of the University of Ljubljana. The President of EUSA, Mr Alberto Gualtieri, EUSA Secretary General, Mr Matjaz Pecovnik, together with other EUSA assistants, offer their sincere thanks to the Rector of Ljubljana, Mrs Kocijancic for the kind gesture. While some contact details (such as email address, website location, and telephone number) remain the same, there are also some changes (the postal address and the fax number). To smoothen the process, we activated redirecting services but we urge you to update our contact details as soon as possible.

This meeting has a particular importance after the very positive result of the 2nd FISU World Rugby 7’s Championship held in Rome in 2006 and in the perspective of the EUSA Rugby 7’s activity starting in France, Grenoble 2007. In the course of the meeting, several hypothesis of common work were taken into consideration, resulting in a near future collaboration among IRB, FISU and EUSA which could bring to very constructive achievements for the future of University Rugby 7’s in Europe and beyond.

NEWS FROM EUSA MEMBER FEDERATIONS SLOVENIA Honorary Doctorate awarded to Mr Killian

The Rector of the University of Maribor, prof. dr. Ivan Rozman, awarded the President of the International University Sport Federation FISU Mr George E. Killian with Doctor Honoris Causa - an honorary doctorate for his extraordinary achievements in the field of university sports. The event took place at the University of Maribor headquarters located in the centre of Maribor. More than 200 people attended this special occasion, among them were the FISU Family members, representatives of EUSA, all rectors of Slovenian universities, deans of the University of Maribor, the Mayor of Maribor, Slovenian University Sports Association officials, representatives of Slovenian Olympic Committee, government representatives and other national and international guests.

Laudations were given by Alberto Gualtieri, EUSA President, prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik, SUSA President, and prof. dr. Samo Fošnarič, the Dean of Faculty of Education at the University of Maribor. After the laudeators’ solemn bestowals, the Rector of the University of Maribor proF. dr.

Ivan Rozman signed the Doctor Honoris Causa diploma, and congratulated the recipient Mr George E. Killian. Prior to the awarding ceremony, FISU, EUSA and SUSA representatives were met at the City Hall by the Mayor of Maribor, Mr Franc Kangler. After the honorary doctorate ceremony, the 10th anniversary of the Slovenian University Sports Association commenced.

10th anniversary of Slovenian University Sports Association Slovenian University Sports Association - SUSA celebrated the 10th anniversary of its activities on Friday, January 5, 07.

The ceremony started with the speech by the President of SUSA prof. dr. Otmar Kugovnik, and the general presentation of the history of the association given by the Secretary General Mr Matjaž Pečovnik, and a special spotlight was given to the bid for the organisation of the 25th Winter Universiade in Maribor. At this special occasion, special recognitions were awarded to SUSA partners.

ESTONIA 15 years of Estonian Academic Sports Federation Estonian Academic Sports Federation (EASF) celebrated its 15th anniversary at the beginning of the year. There is a nice tradition to celebrate it sportingly. There was a tournament for university professors, employees, university sports clubs, supporters and ministries. Tournament took place already fifth time and 37 teams participated in volleyball, basketball and chess. Great tournament in the good spirit of university sport was held, employees of the Tallinn Technical University won the cup of the most sportive university. Next day the official reception by Ants Veetõusme, president of EASF was held in Tallinn, National Opera Theatre. Minister of Education and Research, Minister of Culture and president of the Olympic Committee honoured the celebrations with their presence and gave the prize for the EASF for the good develop-

ment work done during the 15 years in Estonia in the university sports. EASF have organised EUSA volleyball Championships in 2005 in Tallinn, is one of the founders and organisers of the SELL Games, World University Orienteering Championships will be organized in Tartu in 2008. EASF has been active to participate successfully in EUC and universiades. EASF also has a new address: Estonian Academic Sports Federation, Lai 24, EE-51005 Tartu, Estonia. GREAT BRITAIN New organisation for higher education sport in the UK On Thursday 18 January 2007 a second Joint Symposium between British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) and University and College Sport (UCS) members was held at Coventry University to consider the establishment of a new single body for Higher Education (HE) Sport in the UK. Over the past three years an Options Appraisal Group has been tasked by the organisations’ Executives to consider the practical and political implications of the establishment of a singular body for HE Sport. This Group, whose membership included both student and staff members of BUSA and UCS, conducted a detailed process of consultation with members, partner organisations including key sporting organisations and Government. A recommendation was made to the Symposium that the membership of both bodies formally supports the establishment of one new organisation for university sport. This body would reflect the very broad remit of both current organisations and seek to raise the profile, impact and investment in University sport in the UK. During the symposium a wide ranging discussion was held and a number of key additional areas of work were identified.

The membership asked for much greater clarity over the role of FE in the new organisation, identified the need for a detailed financial plan to be produced and articulate the potential charges to members. Notwithstanding these significant issues a referendum of both memberships showed an overwhelming level of support for the proposal with just 8 votes against. Phil Attwell Chair of BUSA said, “we are delighted with the almost unanimous level of support for the recommendations of the Options Appraisal Group and this is no doubt the result of hard work from our Student Directors. However, there is much to do and the next step will be for the Executives of both organisations to consider the implications of this vote of confidence and the challenges ahead.”

MONTENEGRO EUSA President visits Montenegro The President of EUSA Mr Alberto Gualtieri, and the VicePresident of EUSA Mr Sinisa Jasnic visited the newest member of EUSA - the University Sports Association of Montenegro. At a meeting on February 2, 2007, the the European Universities Karate Championship 2007 was also discussed. The championship is to take place between July 6 and 8 in Podgorica, Montenegro. Many prominent guests were also present at the meeting, including Mr Predrag Sekulic, the Minister of culture, sport and media, and Mr Dusan Simonovic, the President of Olympic Committee of Montenegro. The representatives of the host organisation were Mr Predrag Zecevic, the President of SSCUG, and Boris Sekulic, SSCUG Secretary General.

HUNGARY 100 years of university sport federation in Hungary The Hungarian University Sports Federation (HUSF) - first of the kind in Europe - was founded on 25th March 1907, and it celebrated its 100th anniversary on 25th March 2007.

In 1935, 1949, and 1954 it organized World University Games. With the foundation of FISU in 1959 as one of its members HUSF played a significant role in the international university sports life. The 1965 Universiade took place in Budapest, and in the last decades HUSF organized 8 World University Championships in different sports and games. HUSF is also a member of EUSA, from its foundation onwards, trying to improve European University Sports

PORTUGAL Changes in FADU Mr Paulo Ferreira has been nominated on 19th January 2007 as the new President of the Portuguesse University Sports Association (FADU), after the resignation of Mr Carlos de Sousa Santos. Mr Ferreira has a degree in Sports Management and has recently worked as International Relations officer at the EUC Basketball 2006 held in Guimarães. He will be in charge until December, when FADU has elections for the 2007-2009 period.

with the help of a delegate in the EUSA Student Commission. Representatives of 41 member institutions, 35 National Sports Federations, 47 University Sports Clubs and several international organizations; an estimated 350 participants were present on 25th March, 2007 at the Centennial General Assembly. HUSF president Dr. Robert Frenkl greeted the participants, followed by the speeches of FISU General Secretary Mr. Roch Campana and EUSA President Mr. Alberto Gualtieri. The spectacular cultural and sports program was followed by the awarding ceremony.

Mr. Csaba Hédi HUSF General Secretary was awarded a honourable mention by the Ministry, 10 Gold Plaques were awarded, including Mr. Campana and Mr. Gualtieri, and another 50 participants received their Bronze Plaques. Both FISU and EUSA were awarded a Centennial Certificate. In the afternoon the opening of the Exhibition on University Sports took place in the neighbourhood.

Mrs Foldesi receives a high national award Prof. Dr. Gyöngyi Szabó Földesi (HUN), member of the FISU CESU Commission and the Hungarian University Sports Association representative at the last EUSA General Assembly in Valencia 20006, was awarded with a high rank state order of the Hungarian Republic, the so-called “Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic, Officers’ Cross.”

Mrs Földesi received the award because of her outstanding activity in sport sciences, especially in sport sociology, in sport related public life, and because of her committed work to popularize “sport for all” in Hungary. The award was also a consequence of her appointment as Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Congratulations!

FISU NEWS FISU ATTRIBUTED THE 2011 UNIVERSIADES On January 16, 2007 came a long expected FISU decision of attributing the 2011 Winter and Summer Universiades.

Throughout the day, the FISU Executive Committee was being presented with the bid for the 2011 Universiades, the order of presentation was decided with a draw. The bidding cities were Kazan (Russia), Kaohsiung (Chinese Taipei), Shenzhen (China), Murcia (Spain) and Poznan (Poland) for Summer Universiade and Erzurum (Turkey), Maribor, (Slovenia) for Winter Universiade. In the evening, the decision was finally revealed: the 2011 Winter Universiade was attributed to Erzurum, Turkey while the 2011 Summer Universiade 2011 was attributed to Shenzhen, China.

23rd WINTER UNIVERSIADE CONCLUDED Turin (Torino), Italy hosted this year’s 23rd Winter Universiade which actually took place in Turin, Bardonnechia and Pragelato. This was the 23rd edition of the Winter University Games, which are organised under the FISU licence and flag.

1,906 student athletes from 52 countries, challenged each other in 11 snow and ice disciplines (Alpine Skiing, Biathlon, Cross Country Skiing, Curling, Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, Nordic Combined, Short Track, Ski Jumping, Snowboarding, Speed Skating and a demonstration sport Synchronised Skating), fighting for 72 championship titles.

According to the statistics of the organisers, 24 countries won at least one medal, most of them being members of EUSA. The best results were achieved by Korean students which scored the highest on the medal ranking list, but there are seven European

countries, members of EUSA among the top 10.

The most successful European countries were Russia with 34 medals, Italy 17, Ukraine 16, Poland 12 and Slovenia with 10 medals.

10,620 people have accredited for the event, and 6,326 the members of the Organizing Committee staff, 3,012 of which were volunteers, who contributed to the success of the event.

Out of 39 EUSA member federations, 29 were present on the games in Italy.

During the universiade, all EUSA members present at the games also had a meeting entitled “The role of EUSA in the future FISU activities: Bangkok General Assembly.”

On the Closing Ceremony the FISU flag passed in the hands of the Organising Committee of Harbin, China who will organize the next Winter Universiade in 2009.

EUSA CUPS AND PATRONAGE EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES CUP IN AESTHETIC GROUP GYMNASTICS The first European Universities Cup in Aesthetic Group Gymnastics was organized from March 8-10, 2007 in Moscow / RUS. More than 80 students from 7 countries took part in the event.

The Opening Ceremony was organized in the sport center.

After march pass of the participants and the cultural program, speeches were held by Mr Oleg Matytsin, the President of the Russian Sport Student Union and Mrs Paivi Alhroos-Tanttu, the Chair of Technical Committee of IFAGG. Mrs Polina Nochevnova, the Executive Director of Russian Federation of Aesthetic Gymnastics declared the competitions open. The Sport Centre, where the competition took place, was well equipped and the participants had the best conditions for compete. The best on the Cup were Tartu University / EST, which took the gold medal, Moscow State Pedagogical University / RUS, the silver medalist and the Kharkov State Academy of Physical Culture / UKR, which received bronze medal.

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES CUP IN SAILING JK USKOK and ELMAR, under the patronage of EUSA, are organising the 1st European Universities Sailing Cup to be held from 12 to 19 May 2007 in Zadar, Croatia. University teams from all over

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES CUP IN BRIDGE The European Universities Bridge Cup will be held in Brugge, Belgium from August 4-9, 2007 The event will be organised by the University of Antwerp.
