8th EUSA GENERAL ASSEMBLY After a cultural program, including a visit of Valencia Harbour, host of the next America’s Cup, the Ciudad Artes y Ciencias and an Old city tour, Friday was the day of the Seminar “University, Tourism and Sport” as well as of the Convention for the European Universities Championships 2007 Organisers.

CONVENTION FOR THE EUC 2007 ORGANISERS

Valencia, a wonderful Spanish city was the venue of the 8th EUSA General Assembly, which took place from December 1-3, 2006.

The representatives from 33 EUSA member federations participated on the event. Beside them, also many guests were present, including a huge number of FISU Executive Committee members, EUSA Technical Delegates, EUC 2007 Organisers and members of European bidding cities for Universiades 2011 such as Poznan, Kazan, Murcia, Maribor and of the Belgrade Universiade 2009.

During the Convention the representatives of EUSA, Matjaz Pecovnik, Secretary General and Michel Bonfils, EUSA Technical Commission Chair, gave a general briefing on the terms and conditions as well as on examples for best practice of organisation of the European Universities Championships. Subsequently the Technical Delegates met with the Organising Committees of their respective sport in order to check all details of the organisation. Around 30 representatives from all the EUC 2007 Organising Committees and EUSA Technical delegates were present on the Convention.

important relationship between University, Tourism and Sport. Lluis Bellvis, Professor of the Department of Commercialisation and Markets Investigation of the University of Valencia expressed the local point of view. He showed the importance of great events like the America’s Cup for Valencia. Leonz Eder, member of the EUSA Board and also FISU Assessor, pointed out the economical effects of university sport activities in tourist regions, with the example of Winter-sports in Switzerland. The East Europe point of view was presented by the two Russians Ekaterina Furman, Member of the board of Russian Student Sports Union and Elena Demidovich, Vice President of the Students league of the Republic of Tatarstan. They underlined the importance of the role of student sports in Russia.

The very active day before the General Assembly finished with the visit of Carmen Opera, a contemporary dance version of Bizet’s Carmen in the Teatro Principal Valencia.

Referring to the relationship with FISU, EUSA President Gualtieri said, that Europe has also played a very important role in the FISU activities by organizing 21 World University Championships in 2006. “We think that EUSA and its members would be part of new projects for the future of FISU,” he said.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY

On Saturday the official part of the General Assembly started in the La Nau-University building. The participants were welcomed by the representatives of the Spanish University Sports Federation (CEDU), University of Valencia, City of Valencia and EUSA President. The Gaudeamus Igitur Anthem was performed by the student choir of the University of Valencia.

Before EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri presented the annual report to the Assembly, FISU President George E. Killian took the floor and invited the EUSA Executive Committee to host its next meeting in February 2007 in the FISU Headquarters in Brussels. He congratulated the EUSA for its great activities and for the continues support of FISU. In the annual report of the Executive Committee, EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri underlined the fact, that “the act of creating a new dimension of EUSA exclusively for individual Universities and their representatives instead of a national University team, has resulted in widespread success in all the situations where this was implemented: from the Universities with their Rectors to the European Sports Federations and from the FISU to the European Olympic Committees Association. EUSA organised the EUCs in 9 sports. The number of participants has increased from 1,530 participants in 2005 to 2,200 in 2006, which represents a 44% growth.

The number of participating university teams has increase from 200 in 2005 to 255 in 2006, which represents a 28% growth. 26 European countries participated at the championships in 2006.

The Student Commission report 2006 was presented by the STC Chairman, Rafael Gil Salinas.

The delegates of 33 countries (out of a total of 39) accepted the annual report, but also the annual accounts for 2006 and the budget 2007, presented by Treasurer Adam Roczek. The General Assembly of EUSA, chaired by Roch Campana, accepted Montenegro as a new member, as it became an independent and sovereign state since May 21st, 2006.

The General Assembly also approved on the change of the Statutes. The mandate of the members of the EUSA EC and the Auditors will from 2007 on be 4-years.

Jelka Gosnik (CRO) and Olaf Tabor (GER) were elected as EUSA Auditors until the next General Assembly, which will take place in Belgrade in December 2007.

After the General Assembly, all the members were invited to see a pilota-match in a near venue, not far from the university. In the evening the Closing Dinner was held in the Palacio de la Exposition, on which the EUSA President thanked again the representatives of CEDU, the City and University of Valencia for the superb organisation of the event.

EUSA EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MEETING

The EUSA Executive Committee 04-2006 was held on November 30, 2006 at the University of Valencia, Spain.

The meeting started with welcome speech from Rafael Gil Salinas, the Vice Rector of the University of Valencia. The EUSA President Alberto Gualtieri welcomed all the members of the Executive Committee and thanked the hosts for the organisation of the meeting. All members of the Executive Committee were present, except Phil Attwell and Tiina Beljaeva, who excused their absence.

The proposal for the change of the venue and date of the Symposium 2007 from St. Petersburg to Moscow was received from the Russian University Sports Federation.

It was agreed, that the EUSA Symposium will be held in Moscow / RUS from September 27-30, 2007

Members discussed about the future work of the Student Commission. It was decided, that Mr. Rafael Gil Salinas will be the only responsible EC member for the STC. Salinas will by the next EC meeting prepare the proposals for the future STC work.

EUSA YEAR MAGAZINE PUBLISHED At this year’s EUSA General Assembly, which took place in Valencia, Spain from December 1-3, the EUSA Year Magazine 2006 was presented. The Magazine will be published annually, and will contain all the relevant information from the championships and other EUSA events.

The 2006 Magazine is available for download on EUSA website but you can also contact us and request the printed versions of the publication to be sent out to you. We generally grant the requests made from university sports organisations throughout Europe, and also from other parts of the world.

EUC BASKETBALL 2007

GENEVA Geneva is superbly located on the shores of the largest lake in Western Europe at the foot of the Jura mountains and the doorway to the Alps.

• Payment of the deposit to EUSA: Futsal, Handball, Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Rugby - 1000 €/ team Beach-Volleyball, Table Tennis, Karate, Tennis, Badminton, Rowing - 500 €/ team • Clarification of payments, number of open places, communication with »missing« countries, discussion with TD, OC, EC, etc…. (until 2 months before the EUC) • Information to the member federations regarding the situation on each EUC and the number of open places is sent out (2 months in advance). The EUC is opened for second teams from each country until the maximum number of teams is reached (entry form together with the payment of the deposit). Criteria: date of the entry (first come, first play..).

• If the teams withdraw, the paid deposit will be equally shared with the Organising Committee and EUSA.

Together with the Division of Sports of the City of Geneva, the State of Geneva and the ACGBA are both proud and pleased to have been chosen to organise the EUSA European Basketball Championships.

ACCOMMODATION:

In terms of accommodation, students will be housed at the University residence, the Cité universitaire de Genève as well as in various Genevan hotels, like the Ramada Encore, the NH and L’Express

by Holiday Inn. A shuttle service will be provided to facilitate transport of participants between the various sites. Finally, the restaurant at Uni-mail, Novae, along with the restaurant at Cité universitaire, CitéJardin, will be responsible for catering for athletes.

SPORTS FACILITIES:

The tournament will be spread over three sites in close proximity to each other. The women’s competition will mostly be held at the Bout du Monde sports centre, which hosts a playing hall that can hold up to 2000 spectators.

The men’s competition will take place at the Queue d’Arve sports centre and the salle du Pommier.
