1st EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIP KLAGENFURT / AUSTRIA 2004 16 men and 11 women university teams from 11 European countries took part at the 1st European University Beach Volleyball Championship, which was organised by the Austrian University Sports Association and University Sports Institute (USI) Klagenfurt from June 16th to June 19th, 2004 in Klagenfurt / Austria. The tournament took place on 4 beach volleyball courts of Klagenfurt´s public beach front by the lake Worthersee; and was integrated into a popular sports festival of the area (Klagenfurter Sporttage) as its athletic highlight. The teams arrived at Klagenfurt on Wednesday, June 16th. All the participants were accomodated in a Jugendgasthaus Youth Hostel, which was just 800m away from the venue. After the accreditation, the draw, and the first team-captains meeting, a welcoming banquet was organised for all the teams. The tournament began on Thursday morning. The Chairman of the Organising Committee, dr. Wolf Fruhauf, welcomed all the participants and opened the tournament. The teams were devided into 4 groups; best two teams from each group qualified in the quarterfinals; while the others had to fight for the placement from the 9th place on. The weather was perfect, the organisation was on a high level, and both, the players and the spectators, really enjoyed the atmosphere.

After the first days’ matches, the participants could enjoy cruising the Lake Worthersee. The official reception was organised on a boat, which took the players and the officials on a magnificant three hour lake tour.

The sun was shining again on Friday when the matches became more and more exciting. Players and officials could refresh themself with free drinks, which were provided by the sponsors of the tournament.

A Sunset Party was organised at the University Campus of the University of Klagenfurt on Friday evening, and the night was long for many participants‌ accept for the best four teams, who had matches for the medals on Saturday morning.

Despite fearing it would rain the last day, the weather remained in favour of the participants and the organisers, and the tornament was concluded with great and exciting matches.

At the award giving ceremony, the representative of EUSA, mr. Dinos Pavlou, together with the Technical Delegate of EUSA, mr. Gerd Westphal, experessed thanks to the organisers and the players for a wonderful championship, while Mr. Franz Preiml, the Head of USI Klagenfurt, and mag. Ulla Hoyer gave thanks to all the referees, the members of the Organising Committee, and the sponsors.

The Executive Committee of EUSA attributed the 2nd European University Beach Volleyball Championship to Slovenian University Sports Association. The event will take place from June 30th to July 3rd in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
