Special machines for special needs

Hinowa Aerial Platforms Although aerial platforms are not listed as classic construction machines, it’s hard to imagine how to carry out efficiently some of the high altitude construction work processes without them. But the application of Hinowa products point way beyond the field of construction. It would be impossible to list all the tasks that can be done by aerial platforms, but it’s a fact, that in the last decade, in much industry, they displaced the circumstantial and less safe ladder and scaffold solutions. In an urban environment, it is highly unlikely that professionals of building maintenance, city management, electricity network and city lighting, will arrive to the site without an aerial platform. At the same time, this equipment is very popular with companies in the field of cleaning, gardening and forestry also. Small but strong In the following part of the article, we will introduce you to the special equipment of Hinowa, which became available in Hungary in the last few months, in distribution by Körmendi Kft. Let’s start with the rubber tracked aerial platforms of the Italian constructor, which covers a lift range of 8 to 23 meters, and despite their small weight have a surprisingly great capacity and reach. All this pairs up with great safety and easy and efficient operation. The equipment’s small weight makes it possible, that the Hinowa machines can be used almost anywhere.

6

September 2010

Unmounting the basket is easy and fast, and with this the width of the aerial platform is reduced to 786 mm, so almost all kind of interior area becomes accessible. Hydraulically extensible tracks increases their rough terrain capability, they can move safely on aslope, muddy surfaces (trench side, curb, stairs), and outriggers give them great stability on uneven terrains. Outdoor-indoor units All the machines are equipped with two engines. Next to the gasoline engine they have an electric kind too, what makes them available for both indoor and outdoor usage. Plus thanks to the electric drive, operation is noiseless and emission free in an indoor environment. It is worth to mention, that the machines are transferring an even load towards the ground or floor surface, so they can be used in sport stadiums or shopping centers, where the quality floor covering will not suffer any defect from them (also available with white tracks). Because of their small weight, transporting the machines are easy, there is no need for special transportation device, the already existing vehicle,

driven with b-category license, will be enough for taking it from one place to the other. Technical data The Italian manufacturer offers four different types at this time, with a lift height of 8 to 23 meters, from which everybody can choose the one, which fits their needs. Depending on the type, the basket can hold one or two persons, and with a 200 kg maximum capacity, there’s enough room for the tools too. The largest one of the category is the 3 ton Light Lift 23 aerial platform, which has a 23 m vertical and 12 m horizontal outreach. The Light Lift 19.65 machine can reach up to 19 meters, and capable of 6.5 meters outreach horizontally. The height of the equipment in folded position is less than 2 meters, and its width is 78 cm. The next equipment is the Light Lift 14.72, which is only 1350 kg, and has a 14 m lift height. The smallest one of the range is the Goldlift 8.35 aerial platform, which can go up to 8 meters and its maximal horizontal reach is 3.5 meters. Körmendi Kft. H–2310 Szigetszentmiklós, Csepeli út 32. OIL PLATFORM TRANSPORT GOES OFF LIKE CLOCKWORK Goldhofer AG, headquartered in Memmingen, Germany, and their US partner accomplish a truly "herculean task" – 144 axle lines in action If it even takes the breath away from the experienced heavy-duty-transport professional, "Berard Transportation" (Louisiana), the market leader in the US – then the logistical task to be accomplished really has to be "herculean". And it is breath taking if two steel titans, 4000 and 3500 tonnes respectively, are transported without a millimetre to spare and "just in time". The US enterprise carried off this sleight of hand thanks to German state-of-the-art technology: The transport specialist used Goldhofer's know-how to transport two immense oil platform superstructures. These were built for a development project in Alaska and now had to taken there by ship. German high-end technology was needed for this difficult task and specifically in the form a number of self-driven heavy-duty transport modules of the type PST/SL-E and PST/ES-E made by Goldhofer. Beard put its trust in no fewer than 144 axle lines with an unbelievable 1152 wheels. "Berard Transportation", as the market leader in industrial heavy-duty transport, really knows its way around heavy weight transport – but a project like the transport of the modules in Louisiana on the Gulf of Mexico is still something special for the company's president, Johnny Berard: – "To be successful here, a lot of individual parts have to fit together. That is a remarkable achievement for everyone involved."

– “The platforms, 4000 and 3500 tonnes respectively, will be used in Alaska and are the heart of the "Nikaitchuq Development Project", one of the most ambitious development projects in North America” commented Braedon Berard, Operations Manager and leader of the project. Comprising two components, the titans had to be moved through the production lines. This required not only a steady hand from the operator but also sophisticated and field proven technology. A large number of obstacles had to be overcome, including a 90 degree hairpin turn, to be able to move the platform on to the ship with millimetre precision and then position it on a good 350 metre long deck. In the end, everything went smoothly and the American transport professionals, "Berard Transportation", once again showed the smooth interplay between man and well-engineered technology. Everything was done safely and on time and kept within the prescribed financial framework – the best business card for the US enterprise to generate further contracts for the development project in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. And the best foundation for further successful co-operation with the partners of the Goldhofer AG headquartered in Memmingen, Germany. Information: Die Goldhofer AG (650 employees) is worldwide one of the leading suppliers of trailers, semi-trailers, heavy-duty transport systems and aircraft tractors. To date, the heavy load specialist has delivered more than 33,000 heavy and heavy-load vehicles in more than 70 nations. Many thousands of customers on every continent trust in Goldhofer's quality and service.

LAMILUX DEVELOPS A NEW TYPE OF GRP MATERIAL FOR SANDWICH FACINGS The industry is increasingly backing sophisticated composites for the lightweight construction of commercial vehicles. They must be stable, light and very durable in order to meets the requirements of weight reduction and longevity while focusing on energy-efficient and sustainable mobility. With the new fiber reinforced composite LAMILUXplan High Impact, LAMILUX – the market leader in the production of GRPs in Europe – has developed a new facing material which combines all the positive features of thermoplastic and thermosetting materials and of sheet metals. It is primarily intended to be used as a surface for sandwich elements for side wall and roof structures. LAMILUX will present this composite material, which has extremely good impact resistance and tensile strength, at the IAA trade fair (Hall 27, stand D34) which will take place in Hannover, Germany, from September 23 to 30. With the fiber reinforced composite LAMILUXplan High Impact, it has been possible to combine the most compelling product advantages of three major construction materials in commercial vehicle design. It has the impact resistance and surface appearance of polished metal facings (such as aluminum, for example) while at the same time possessing the low thermal conductivity and elastic deformability of thermoplastic materials and having the high resistance to UV, weathering and corrosion and the rigidity, stability and low specific mass per unit area of thermosetting polymers. LAMILUXplan High Impact at the same time compensates for the disadvantages of the materials, such as the susceptibility of metals to corrosion and the poor paintability of thermoplastics. As Stefan Bachstein, Technical Director for LAMILUXplan, explains, – "Due to its extreme impact resistance and tensile strength, our new material withstands the effects of even the strongest frontal forces." According to Bachstein, this has been proved in numerous standardized test series. Examples include the Charpy impact test according to ISO 179/2n, as well as the tests for flexural strength according to DIN EN ISO 14125/WKII and tensile strength according to DIN EN ISO 527-4/2/2. According to these tests, LAMILUXplan High Impact achieves an impact resistance of up to 100 kJ/m2 and a flexural strength of 305 N/mm2. The value for the tensile strength has been determined as being 240 N/mm2. By way of

illustration, a 1.0 centimeter wide strip of LAMILUXplan High Impact with a thickness of 0.8 millimeters only tears with a tensile loading upwards of 155 kilograms. Stable, durable material with a high quality visual appearance In order to achieve the material's impact resistance, LAMILUX utilizes a new resin system. It provides LAMILUXplan High Impact with the necessary flexibility to absorb strong forces. The resin absorbs the stresses which are produced and transfers them into the reinforcing fibers. Depending on the scope of application and the customer's requirements in terms of stability, these fibers can in turn be incorporated into the material in two or three plies, in various grammages and with different fiber orientations. – "We have developed this durable material with a high-quality, brilliant outer surface specifically for use as a facing for sandwich panels in vehicle construction," explains Technical Director Stefan Bachstein further. He goes on to say that the processing industry will profit in particular from the advantages which LAMILUXplan High Impact will bring as a thermosetting polymer material. – "We can produce the material in all RAL and NCS shades and in colors customized according to client requirements. This means that a subsequent lacquer finish is not necessary, although it would be possible without any problems and without any complex surface treatment." According to Bachstein, the material further offers a high level of convenience in processing, as it is easy to bond and can be manufactured in widths of up to 3.20 meters. About LAMILUX Heinrich Strunz GmbH Heinrich Strunz GmbH has been producing fiber reinforced composites and daylight systems made of plastic, glass and aluminum under the LAMILUX brand name for more than 60 years. This medium-sized family company is a European market leader in its LAMILUXplan Fiber Reinforced Composites Division due to its technologically outstanding continuous production process. LAMILUXplan supplies customers around the globe in the vehicle, motor home and caravan construction industries, the building industry, the refrigerated warehouse and cold storage cell construction industries and other industry sectors. The company has its headquarters in Rehau in Germany and in 2009 had a turnover of 86 million Euros with 400 employees.

D7E bulldozer diesel-electric drive Famous for their bulldozers, earth-moving machine manufacturer Caterpillar has been always a leader in the introduction of innovative designs. Today’s increasing fuel prices, emission regulations, demand for economically operating machines and the interest to stay competitive, made Caterpillar to develop a new technology. Seeing the success of hybrid technology in the auto industry they created the new member of Caterpillar’s mid size bulldozers, the D7E type diesel-electric dozer.

Final Drives

Caterpillar first used the new diesel-electric drive in its already existing delta track D7R, but later market conditions in this machine group dictated that they redesigne the machine structure and gave it an oval track. They decided on the middle size, because this way resizing to larger or smaller machine categories will be easier later. The cab provides a greater visibility, thanks to the center post design. The operator aligns perfectly with the cab’s center post, the exhaust stack, and air intake. The blade is moved by a single lift cylinder, which means lower hydraulic flow consumption. About the electric drive The electric drive consists of a generator, inverter and electric motor, which substitutes the mechanical torque converter and the clutch. One ACER™ technology Cat C9.3 diesel engine drives a high power generator, which converts the mechanical energy into alternating current (AC). The produced electricity then flows through special armored cables and military-grade connectors to a solid-state inverter. Advanced electronics send AC current to the propulsion module to control the motors and provides DC current for the accessory system.

Diesel-electric Hybrid Power Train

The slightly adjustable propulsion module delivers great torque to the final drives. The two, alternating current motor, which according to today’s technology level, doesn’t have electronic contacts (brushes), and contains 60% less moving parts. The differential steering for the D7E is developed from the D8T version. The D7E has a serial hybrid drive. The energy converters are in line connections. The diesel engine is not connected mechanically to the drive. The mechanic energy of the internal combustion engine is transformed to electrical energy by the generator. The inverter transforms the drive signal based on the power output, and sends it to the electric motor, which is responsible for the propulsion. The benefit of this construction is that the rev of the combustion engine is freely adjustable, as long as the needed electric power is available for the propulsion. The energy is either provided by the battery or the combust engine of the generator or by both. Depending on the operational strategy, the output of the combustion engine can be used according to the actual electric energy need, or it can run on the most efficient range, which results a very low emission. The new small but great 515-40 model is 1.8 m high, 2.97 m long and less than 3.5 ton. Delivering powerful performance despite these compact dimensions, it will bring the benefits of JCB’s market-leading Loadall range to previously inaccessible construction and industrial applications.

JCB ADDS TWO MODELS TO ITS MARKET-LEADER TELESCOPIC HANDLER RANGE JCB showed the compact 527-58 and high performance 550-80 telescopic handlers at Bauma, as the extension of its market-leader telescopic handler range. Both Loadall types, which are at the two ends of the lifting scale, mirrors the same design innovation viewpoint, which made JCB the manufacturer of the world most sought after telescopic handlers. The 527-58 machine is driven by a 85 hp (63 kW) or a 100 hp (74 kW) JCB Dieselmax engine. The drive is given by a highly efficient hydrostatic transmission. Its maximum capacity is 2.7 ton at 5.8 m lift height. JCB’s highest capacity telescopic handler, the 550-80 is specifically designed for bulk handling operations in waste and industrial sectors. It offers an 8 m lift height and a maximum lifting capacity of 5 ton. Powered by either a 100 hp (74 kW) or 130 hp (97 kW) engine, the machine boast a capable transmission.

JCB ROLLED OUT NEW WALK-BEHINDE MODELS The robust VMD70 and VMD100 has the best maneuverability, safest and can be serviced the best in its category, with wider drums, higher frequency for improved compaction and faster service time for rental facilities. The VMD70 competes in the 700 kg class and has a drum width of 650 mm, and will replace both the VMD62 and VMD80 models, while the larger VMD100 tips the scales at 900 kg and runs on 750 mm wide drums, and will replace the VMD120 model.

Zsolt Pintér, representing Axiál

Kornél Vô

Podium of O-125 category

Axiál Hungarian Grand Prix 3–4 July 2010 Baja, Hungary The event Most people are familiar with water sports, but few can say, that they ever sliced the waves in a lightweight powerboat, going over a 100 km/h. We had a chance to be again part of this, well not as contestants but as spectators, since after decades of break – based on the success of last year’s race – Vô Racing Team from Baja, once again received the rights from the International Powerboat Federation to organize the O-125, F-250 and F-500 races, in 2010. As technical supporter and name giving sponsor, the owners and employees of Axiál Kft. are filled with pride, when they look at the shiny medals, which were taken by the racers of Vô Racing Team, from the World Champion, European Champion and International races of the Axiál Hungarian Grand Prix. In the O-125 category Kornél Vô, in the Formula-250 category Péter Bodor received bronze medals, and in the Formula-500 Róbert Hencz won the silver. Although this time they did not make the podium, we have to mention two other members of the team, Viktor Vô and Attila Hencz, who finished at 5th and 6th places, further enhancing the fame of the Hungarian powerboat sport. We hope technical errors will avoid them in the future, and we will see our racers on one of the steps of the podium. The event was accompanied with rich programs, this way not only the fans of the powerboat sport, but whole families could found something of interest. The biggest success was Tamás Nádas aerobatics pilot, who held demonstrations every day after the races, but the dance groups and artists from around Baja, also received a big round of applause. At the awarding ceremony, Zsolt Pintér, the managing director of Axiál Kft. joyfully welcomed the colorfulness of the international field and the successful work of the organizers. The leader of Vô Racing Team, and the main organizer of the race, András Vô was touched when he thanked the love and encouragement of the spectators, and promised, that the boats and the racers will return to Baja in 2011.

MB’S NEW JAPANESE BRANCH OPENS

Operative as from March, its offices and warehouses will be available to Japanese customers MB S.p.A. travels across the ocean and lands in one of the most advanced countries in the world: the new subsidiary of the Vicenza-based company, world leader in the production and sale of crusher buckets, has been operative in Japan since the beginning of March. Located in Tokyo's modern and downtown neighbourhood of Shinagawa, the new branch will also be equipped with a warehouse where to store goods and manage the after-sales service. On the very first day the subsidiary was open for business, MB’s success did not take long to show itself: the office received 26 telephone calls and 311 congratulatory letters! Not bad for a company founded not even ten years ago and which, in just a short time, has managed to reach borders throughout the world, last but not least Japan, the most technological country on the planet. In fact, only a handful of Italian companies can boast a direct presence in the Land of the Rising Sun, where punctuality, service, focus on the customer, precision and assistance represent the necessary yet not sufficient requirement for doing one’s business. In addition to the above, in fact, the extremely demanding Japanese customer expects a touch of creativity, innovative solutions, continual improvement of performances and work process, and intrinsic product beauty: all of which MB has shown to possess and make the most of. The opening of the Japanese subsidiary represents, on the one hand, the conclusion of a thorough market analysis that has lasted a few years and, on the other, a bridgehead in the

USETEC

world's reference market in terms of technological excellence applied to every aspect of man’s life. So, MB’s challenge will be to satisfy the requests of a constantly changing market such as the Japanese one, in a country where 120 million people move at a relentless pace, with huge areas entirely covered by skyscrapers, office buildings, homes and plants that have to be torn down and rebuilt every thirty years in order to comply with extremely tough anti-seismic regulations in a country with the largest number of volcanoes in the world, sitting on one of the most active faults on Earth. The Tokyo office is in a strategically central area from both a technical and logistical standpoint, and it is well connected to the Italian headquarters by means of optic fibres, for perfect management of the many information systems. From this position, Japanese customers are well served both in terms of beforesale assistance and after-sale technical support by qualified, Japanese-speaking personnel, with offices hours from 8 o’clock in the morning to 8 o’clock at night. From MB’s Tokyo-based office, it will be possible to implement marketing campaigns, collect market-related information, and schedule demonstrations and road shows for all possible customer segments. However, the most important factor is that the new Japanese branch will make it possible to have the buckets on site, ready to be delivered to the construction yard as quickly as possible, thus avoiding long transit times by sea. In addition, spare parts are made available through a just-in-time warehouse with on-line booking, thanks to which the requested part can be delivered to the construction yard within 24 hours. Efficiency, determination, seriousness and reliability: this is how MB presents itself to the world and it is how the company has conquered the Japanese market, bringing work and innovation to this area, without forgetting to be humble and the ability to listen to and implement advice and suggestions provided by these very precious observers, careful and thorough. So, MB has no intention of stopping now, and it is counting on further improving products and services already at the top in terms of reliability and performance, competing with different markets and cultures on a daily basis, thus strengthening and maintaining its position as unquestionable world leader in the production and sales of its award-winning crusher buckets.

World Trade Fair for Used Technology Cologne 2011, 6 to 8 April

USETEC and Resale to co-operate – joint expertise for trade fair for used machinery The international used machinery market will present itself in one unique forum in Cologne from 6 to 8 April 2011. Koelnmesse GmbH and Hess GmbH on one side and Landesmesse Stuttgart GmbH with Messe Karlsruhe on the other side have agreed to join forces for the organisation of a trade fair for used technology. To make this happen, USETEC, which is organized by Koelnmesse and Hess GmbH, will henceforth be supported by Messe Stuttgart and Messe Karlsruhe: USETEC, “supported by Resale”. Messe Stuttgart’s expertise in different sectors, such as Retrofitting, food and drinks technology will contribute to the development of USETEC in Cologne, for which Messe Stuttgart will be acting as co-operating partner. Oliver P. Kuhrt, Executive Vice President of Koelnmesse GmbH, says: – ”The benefits for the market are of utmost importance for our exhibition companies. This co-operation will help all market players and is a clear signal for a strong world trade fair for used technology in Cologne.“ Ulrich Kromer von Baerle, CEO of Messe Stuttgart, is convinced of the synergies that can be created: – ”For the used machine sector, and especially for the exhibitors, it is the only economically viable solution to combine the two events.“

Until 2010, the Resale trade show was held in Karlsruhe; the local exhibition company now brings the “Resale” brand to the new cooperation. Florian Hess, co-organiser of Resale for many years, and now coorganiser of USETEC: – “We will work with all partners to make sure to establish USETEC as the leading international platform for the used machinery and equipment market.” USETEC will showcase used machinery and systems for all industries and sectors – from construction machinery and commercial vehicles, robotic systems, machine tools for metal and wood processing, all the way to plastics processing and information and telecommunications technology. Further information is available at www.usetec.com Contact: Hess GmbH – Florian Hess Koenigsberger Straße 2, 76356-Weingarten, Germany Phone: +49 (0) 7244 7075-0 Fax: +49 (0) 7244 7075-50 E-mail: info@usetec-germany.com

Organisers of USETEC: Hess GmbH und Koelnmesse GmbH Technical Sponsor: FDM, Trade Association for Machine Tools and Tools

For this, Kromer can count on the support of the CEO of Messe Karlsruhe, Britta Wirtz: – “It was our initiative to bring together trade fair competence in the areas of mechanical engineering and used technology in Germany. This co-operation is simply an act of common sense“.

TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

MULTIFUNCTIONAL SOLUTIONS IN SERVICE OF THE CUSTOMER With its over 20 years presence in the sector of systems and machine tools, Sir Meccanica SpA has reached a prominent position in the world market for the production of portable multifunction machine tools, and is proposing new and revolutionary techniques to carry out grinding work in the production and maintenance of internal and external cylindrical surfaces, in heavy and light metallic carpentry in the sectors of earthmoving, building, agricultural, road constructions, industrial field, machines and plants linked to transport and energy, railway equipment, nuclear plants, mercantile and passenger ships, gas and petroleum extracting towers, military transport vehicles and mining equipment of any brand or size, making innovation, reliability, and qualified customer service its strong points. POINTS OF EXCELLENCE

Precision and reliability Safety in performance Simplicity in use Derisory investment Versatility Machining time reduction Knock down labour costs Certification In order to guarantee to our market the best in terms of safety, quality and price, SIR MECCANICA has obtained from the most prestigious certifying organizations the acquisition of certifications and the protection of international patents. Certification UNI-EN-ISO 9001-2000 CE Certification (N° IMQ 192) GOST Certification SIR MECCANICA has been assigned the Nato code (NCAGE AFA 74) becoming the official supplier of materials and services for the Government of the United States of America and American bases in Europe. Network Today the company is present in 135 countries, with the consolidated customers of more than 3900 companies. The international commercial structure, since 1993, avails itself of a capillary network that aims at continuous expansions, formed by importers, distributors, dealers and agents. Sir Meccanica is present in Russia and Australia with its own representative offices and will soon be opening a head office in the United States of America and in Dubai.

PRODUCTS WS Series: The machines carry out, on site and with only one simple set-up: in-line boring, internal and external overlay welding, drilling and tapping, bringing any type of ovalized or worn hole back to its original dimensions, giving to the range characteristics of stability, precision, compactness, strength and safety in an intelligent and harmonious way. The WS series is composed of 10 models, each operating on different dimensions; Each machine operates with extreme precision for the on-site repair of holes and joint points of big and small size equipment for which disassembly would result in a machine stop and to its transportation to the workshop. Statistically, the use of this innovative equipment reduces the machining time of 85%: The year 2009, for SIR MECCANICA SPA, has marked a turning point towards new target customers, thanks to the creation of the latest products that reflect, once again, the big ingenuity, the maximum quality of SIR MECCANICA’s machinery and the company’s mission finalized towards a full customer satisfaction.

Application examples: ingot mould finishing from a heavy foundry, industrial pipelines, big hinges and tubes in the shipyard sector. The extreme precision of machining, as regards to the quotes and the surface finishing, is guaranteed by the fact that the RSX9 moves and dynamically positions itself on the theoretic axis of the circular cavity; the axis is continuously checked and verified, through a particularly solid system, on which there are 4 linear actuators assembled along the radius on who’s end there is an adjustable bearing mounted. The FMAX: available in three models 3axis 800; 3axis 2000; 3axis 4000; It has been created to carry out works such as milling, grooving, even concentric, to create fittings and housings for every type of application and need, directly on-site thanks to the great precision in the control of the movement and to the stability of the motorized head. It is equipped with rapid movements to optimize machining time.

RSX9 SERIES: Basically, it can be defined as a portable boring machine tool performing metal machining by chip removal, operating with a fixed axle for machining on big diameters and over long lengths.

The entire machining and movement system is handled electronically through interactions with a tachometric dynamo and various transducers, that allow for a constant monitoring and setting of the cutting and feeding diameters.

It represents the ideal solution for axial alignment or re-alignment of big bodies with an axially symmetric type of cylindrical cavity, that are developed basically in length and that other conventional machines cannot manage. The RSX9 series is available on the market in two models: RSX9800 and RSX91200.

T.O.P. 200 – Full CNC Portable Orbital Lathe – In the year 2010, we have created a new portable machine tool for “on-site” turning with extreme precision (completely run by a CNC control panel), on faces and internal and/or external extremities of cylindrical surfaces, of fixed tubular bodies which are immovable or impossible to rotate.

Created to carry on machining “on-site”; it is a remedy for the impossibility and the difficulty of economic as well as logistic nature in transferring these big bodies and their relative connections or structures from their original location. The RSX9 is supplied with rapid movements to optimize machining time and of an anti-blockage system.

We invite you to enter in the Sir Meccanica world by viewing our new website www.sirmeccanica.com where you can find, besides further technical information supported by dedicated videos, the confirmation of the absolute essentiality of our products at high technologic innovation.

The entire machining and movement system is handled electronically through interactions with a tachometric dynamo and various transducers, that allow for a constant monitoring and setting of the cutting and feeding diameters.

Inspiration and Information! House of Frank Loyd Wright's Cascade will soon have a company match. Concervancy Western Pennsylvania, the organization that handles both the House of the waterfall and various educational programs, organized a contest for achieving permanent housing and park space rental housing to support various educational activities. The competition was won by Patka Architects of Vancouver, who proposed a series of underground house, buried in the hill slopes of Bear Run Nature Reserve, where is the famous home of Wright's. The contest theme must achieve optimal natural environment and the construction will not disturb the ecosystem. Patkau’s proposal was selected from a list of six firms because: “In its subtlety, it is provocative and it carries forward the discourse about architectural space. The main feature of the project is not its content, but elements that have managed to omit them. " Imagine that a tornado is heading to the city where you live, but instead of running to the shelter in your basement, you become comfortable in your living room. Although it seems incredible, this is possible because the new wallpaper "Protecting Blast X-Flex System" its able to withstand a blast wave impact. This wallpaper, invented by Berry Plastics company in partnership with the U.S. Army Engineers Division, is made of a single layer, so strong that a wall can stop crushing even when using a shot of demolition. Installation is made simple by sticking on the inner wall. Berry Plastics Company intends to draw soon on the market a commercial version of this product, so far only used for military applications.

When we talk about green buildings, glazed windows are elements that make the difference between effective and ineffective. We need to get windows daylight and fresh air inside, but even the best windows have openings which loses energy. The Peer+ company created a new type of glazing that can change its opacity coefficient to filter sunlight, and generate electricity. Called "energy smart glazing, these new windows are made in the Netherlands and they are the first products of this type. Unfortunately, many technical details were not disclosed but we can recognize the potential of these new energy producing glazing. It is interesting to see how far you can with recycling. Bookstore McNally Jackson Books in Manhattan is an example of development "as the books." The owner has combined his efforts with the designers’ team of Front Studio for renovating the library cafe, and making a "dedicated literature area”. Although the cafe is relatively small, it provides enough room for four different areas of reading and a bar. Above the central area of reading is interspersed with books lighting hung from wires at different heights, producing a floating effect, as "books had been blown up and remained in suspension. Curved wall behind the bench is completely covered with pages of books, and wooden wall panels are attached that can be lowered and used as tables. These panels resemble look like the old school banks or as a folded book when closed.

Wacker Neuson SE profitable in H1 as order book shows strong signs of revival Trend confirmed – Q2 revenue up on first quarter and same quarter last year – Order intake has positive impact on capacity utilization (Munich, July 26, 2010) According to provisional figures, the Wacker Neuson Group managed as expected to increase Q2 revenue relative to both the first quarter of the current fiscal year and the same quarter last year and post positive earnings once again. In addition, the Group reports a healthy revival of order intake. Order backlog for compact equipment at the end of June 2010 was 350 percent higher than the corresponding figure for the same period last year. Further increase in revenue and earnings in Q2 Although sales in the first quarter were squeezed by a harsh winter in the US and Europe, demand in the second quarter picked up further as expected and as indicated at the world’s largest construction fair bauma in April. According to provisional figures, quarterly revenue for the Wacker Neuson Group is expected to reach EUR 205.3 million, up 36.6 percent on the first quarter and 31.2 percent on the same period last year (Q1 2010: EUR 150.3 million, Q2 2009: EUR 156.5 million). These figures reflect the positive trend in the light equipment segment in particular. The forward-looking cost-efficiency measures introduced back at the end of 2008 also contributed – as anticipated – to the results. The provisional Q2 profit before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) amounts to around EUR 27.0 million (previous year: EUR 13.4 million). Provisional earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) are posted at around EUR 17.2 million (previous year: EUR 3.2 million) with provisional Q2 profit for the period after tax and minority interests set at around EUR 10.9 million (previous year: EUR 1.4 million). The Wacker Neuson Group was thus able to more than compensate for Q1 losses (posted at EUR 5.7 million) and has returned to profit as planned in the first half year. The company remains on a strong financial footing with an equity quota of 79 percent and a low net financial debt. Order backlog up 350 percent on previous year’s figure Accumulated order income for compact equipment – fuelled by the construction and agricultural industries – almost doubled in the first half-year of 2010 relative to the same period last year. By the end of June 2010, order backlog was even 350 percent higher than the figure reported for 2009. This upturn was, however, also accompanied by delivery bottlenecks among certain suppliers and this affected the entire industry. The Group assumes that pressure 44

September 2010

will ease further and products will increasingly be ready for delivery on time. – “Our production facilities for light and compact equipment such as wheel loaders, dumpers and excavators show a healthy level of capacity utilization. In addition, our recent alliance with Caterpillar has the effect of accelerating construction plans for our new production facility in Hörsching, near Linz in Austria,” explains Dr. Georg Sick, CEO of Wacker Neuson SE. Additional reasons for the Group to feel optimistic for fiscal 2010 overall is the demand for light equipment that remains strong in Europe, the US and Asia. Global perspective underpins future prospects Under the umbrella of a strategic alliance recently concluded between Wacker Neuson SE and Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, US, both companies have agreed to collaborate over the next 20 years. Starting in 2011, Wacker Neuson will exclusively develop mini excavators up to a total weight of three tons and manufacture these at Wacker Neuson’s plant in Austria. Caterpillar will use these machines to meet worldwide demand for its mini excavators (with the exception of Japan). – “Caterpillar has the world’s strongest distribution network. This strategic alliance allows us to increase production volumes, reduce manufacturing costs and strengthen the competitive positions of both companies in what is a highly fragmented market,” continues Sick. The Group is looking to the future with optimism. – “Mid-term, we are planning to more than double unit production in this product class. And this strategic alliance will also impact positively on our development and manufacturing competencies,” concludes Sick. About Wacker Neuson Wacker Neuson SE is a global manufacturer of light and compact equipment. With over 30 affiliates and more than 180 sales and service stations across the globe, the company offers an exceptionally broad product portfolio. Manufacturing activities are distributed across three German, one Austrian, two American and one Philippine production sites. Almost all products manufactured by the company are branded Wacker Neuson. The only exceptions to this in Europe are Kramer Allrad products and Weidemann-branded agricultural machinery. With over 300 product categories and complementary rental, spare parts and repair services, Wacker Neuson is the partner of choice among professional users in construction, gardening, landscaping and agriculture, as well as among municipal bodies and companies in the industrial and recycling sectors.

INTERVIEW WITH EUGEN EGETENMEIR, MEMBER OF THE MANAGEMENT BOARD OF MESSE MÜNCHEN GMBH Topic: Prospects for the trade fairs bauma China in Shanghai and bC India in Mumbai

Question: bauma China 2010, which is taking place from 23 to 26 November at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC), is once again preparing for a record event: around 1,700 exhibitors from 30 countries are expected and the 220,000 square metres of exhibition space has been fully booked since spring of this year. This seems contrary to the economic trend around the world, because the global construction machinery industry has also suffered a decline in orders during the economic crisis of 2009, and is only now slowly picking up. How can we explain the positive response to bauma China 2010? Egetenmeir: The effects of the global economic crisis on the construction machinery industry have varied in the different continents. Many Asian markets, led by China, have continued to grow. Similar development has been experienced by the Indian subcontinent, and also Turkey, for example. As the organiser of bauma in Munich, which has been the leading trade fair for the international construction industry for five decades, we have succeeded in transferring our concept for success into the growth markets. And, taking individual marketspecific factors into consideration, we have also imple-

46

September 2010

mented it successfully. The first bauma China took place in 2002 in Shanghai and was very quickly established as the leading trade fair for China and Asia. Conversely, this also benefited bauma in Munich, because the name bauma, which stands for innovations in construction machinery and top-quality event service and organisation, is becoming much better known internationally. For instance, since bauma China started, an increasing number of Asian companies are showing interest in taking part in the trade fair in Munich: more Chinese companies than ever before registered for bauma 2010 in April, for example. With 286 exhibitors China is in third place behind Germany and Italy in the top 10 statistics, so we can be very upbeat about the 2010 construction machinery fairs. The world’s leading trade fair in Munich was fully booked, because companies in the industry want to present their innovations in a global competitive environment. bauma China caters specifically for China and Greater Asia. International companies which are focusing increasingly on that growth market are drawn to it, but it is also of interest to Chinese exhibitors. At bauma China they can meet with their customers from China while also having access to the export markets of Asia.

Question: If the entire exhibition area was booked up as early as spring 2010, we have to wonder if the Shanghai venue for bauma China still has growth potential for the future? Egetenmeir: Two new halls are currently been built in the SNIEC, which we will be able to use for the coming event. These new construction measures will, very roughly, accommodate the increase in demand for exhibition space in the Shanghai venue. SNIEC, which was built by Messe München together with German and Chinese partners, is a relatively new, but very functional exhibition centre, managed according to international standards. Apart from being a successful exhibition centre in China, it also has the highest capacity utilization of any exhibition centre in the world. Messe München alone has put on seven successful events in the Chinese market since 2002. Of all the trade fairs, bauma China is of course the one that requires the most space. Four more halls will be built by

2011, completing the complex which will then have a total of 17 halls with 200,000 square metres exhibition area and an additional open-air exhibition area comprising an extra 120,000 square metres. With a total of 320,000 square metres, there is enough space available for bauma China to continue to grow.

Question: Finally a quick look at India: what expectations do you have for bC India, which is taking place in Mumbai for the first time in February 2011? Egetenmeir: India has developed into one of the largest economies in the world. Mediumterm forecasts from the economic institutes even predict that India will be the third biggest economy in the world after China and the US. However, according to experts, the deficits in the country’s infrastructure are reducing the sharp rise in economic growth by about two percent per year. So the fact that India’s prime minister, Manmohan Singh, is allowing for over one trillion US dollars of investment in the country’s infrastructure in the 12th fiveyear plan for the period from 2012 to 2017 is extremely welcome. Messe München has made strategic decisions to organise our successful trade fairs in countries where there is an appropriate demand. This has inevitably led the most successful construction machinery fair in the world to the booming economic market of India. bC India, which is taking place in Mumbai for the first time from 8 to 11 February 2011, provides the ideal platform for international exchange in everything to do with construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment. The fair is being implemented as a joint venture with the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) from the US. There is a huge demand for what bC India has to offer. As early as February 2010, the exhibition space had to be increased by around 60 percent to 80,000 square metres due to the rush of exhibitors – that shows us that, with India, we have opened up precisely the right market for our construction machinery trade fair.

Big 5 PMV 22–25 November 2010 Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre

In the last few years, the Middle East has established as one of the most attractive construction and engineering markets for international contractors. Although affected by the global economic downturn, the region still offers good opportunities as the local construction industry was more resilient than other markets. According to Ventures Middle East, a project tracking firm, more than US$ 14bn worth of construction contracts were awarded in the GCC in April and May 2010, with more than half of that figure – around US$ 8.7 billion – awarded in the UAE. In April 2010, projects worth millions of dollars went into execution in the GCC and UAE including the Water Garden City in Bahrain (US$ 6.6 billion), Musheireb, located at the heart of Doha, Qatar (US$ 430 million), Al Ain Convention Center District (US$ 953 million), Saadiyat Island Development Cultural District – New York University (NYU) Abu Dhabi (US$ 865 million), Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone (KPIZ) in Abu Dhabi (US$ 280 million), Business Bay Development, The Opus Tower (US$ 469 million) in Dubai and the Lakeside Development of International Media Production Zone (US$ 100 million). Furthermore, a study released by the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry in August 2010 reveals an optimistic outlook for the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It states that the UAE is still the largest construction market in the GCC with US$ 714.8 billion worth of construction projects in the progress or planning stages. Saudi Arabia comes in the second position with US$ 238.8 billion worth of projects in the pipeline. The UAE government has been supporting the construction industry through sizeable investment in infrastructure to help the economy through the global economic slowdown in the short-term and guarantee sustainable growth for the country in the mid and long-term. As part of the ‘Plan Abu Dhabi 2030’, the Emirate has announced massive long-term investment programme to upgrade it’s a public transportation system, ports and airports. Abu Dhabi, which has a less developed transport infrastructure than Dubai and suffers chronic congestion problems, is expected to spend US$ 68 billion from 2010 to 2015 on its public transportation system alone. Projects include the US$ 7 billion and 131 kilometres long Abu Dhabi metro project of which construction is expected to start in 2011. The project’s completion is set for 2016 with the first segment complete and open to the public in 2015. In Dubai, major transportation projects are already well in progress and include completion of the Dubai Metro, the new tramline, the parallel roads

project and a possible expansion of the Jebel Ali Port. Furthermore, as part of Dubai’s ‘Strategic Plan 2015’ and the Emirate’s aspiration to position as a regional leader in the aviation and logistics sector, the government has announced a US$ 82 million investment programme to develop the sector. “Despite media speculation, there is still strong international interest in the Middle East construction industry and the Big 5 PMV has already attracted exhibitors from Asia, Europe and the Middle East,” said Nick Webb, Director of Streamline Marketing Group, organisers of the Big 5 PMV. The fourth edition of the Big 5 PMV, the region’s leading exhibition for construction plant, machinery, equipment and vehicles will take place from 22–25 November 2010 in Dubai, alongside the Big 5, the Middle East’s largest and most influential construction industry event. In 2009, more than 45,000 visitors were received at Big 5 and Big 5 PMV. The Big 5 PMV 2009 welcomed approximately 12,000 visitors with a direct interest in the plant, machinery and vehicles industry from around the globe. This year’s Big 5 PMV will feature a new live demonstration area, allowing key buyers from across the region and oversees to meet face-to-face with leading manufacturers and suppliers and to experience the latest innovations and technology first-hand. For the first time, visitors will be able to travel to the Big 5 PMV via the Dubai Metro, with the Dubai World Trade Centre metro station conveniently located adjacent to the Big 5 PMV venue. SAMOTER 2011 from 2nd to 6th March 2011 in Veronafiere The three-yearly International Exhibition of Earth Moving, Site and Building Industry Machinery Sustainability is the keyword and leit motif of the 2011 edition. The objective of the event is to be an occasion for knowledge, training and analysis of the topic by analysing the various aspects applicable to the construction value chain: safety and attention to the building process, the relationship between environment and the economy, technical standards and regulations, products, tools and innovation, ethics and design. Sustainability will also be the focus of the inaugural convention dealing with the topic Design and the Sustainable Building Industry: Trends and Best Practices which will involve, through a round table, national and international experiences presented in two sessions of comparisons between the north American and European markets. Whether designing a bridge, re-qualifying buildings or defining urban spaces for an entire community, an integrated approach between design and sustainable construction can achieve much more than just energy saving and ensure, for example, better layout of areas, reduction of waste and more sustainable use of materials, with long-term economic advantages and environmental benefits. The seminar aims to present the key concepts in the sustainable building industry by focusing on an integrated approach to design and construction through the presentation of "case studies" highlighting various international applications and experiences. The 2011 edition will again propose the SAMOTER SPECIALS: courses dedicated to individual trade sectors such as earth moving, concrete, road building, drilling, crushing, hoisting, vehicles and components. Every sphere is graphically differentiated to help visitors identify the "route" of interest; each of the 9 sectors is therefore matched by an icon and an identification colour. Theme days will then back up these courses through dynamic events, seminars and conventions. The topic of sustainability will cross all sectors of the event Technical Innovation Competition In keeping with tradition, 28th edition of Samoter will also reward particularly original and avant-garde creativity, design and products/services on

the market. The Technical Innovation Competition, won in 2008 by Officine Meccaniche Ponzano Veneto with the Non Stop machine management system, is open to all manufacturers presenting previews at the exhibition of their constructional and functional innovations. An important initiative that, for the 20th anniversary edition, sees the traditional award joined by a new section dedicated to sustainability. As well as rewarding the results of significant investments, this by now renowned and widely acknowledged event offers entrepreneurs and technicians in the sectors involved an opportunity for updates about technical-constructional and functional evolution of site activity. The award is assigned with reference to the contents or implementations of projects or products as regards energy saving, productivity, ergonomics and safety in use, as well as other aspects that in any case ensure added value and distinction. The jury, now joined by Chris Sleight, the expert editor of the KHL publishing group and Albrecht Benno, an architect specialising in sustainable constructions, is chaired by the new director of IMAMOTER, Ing. Roberto Paoluzzi, who will coordinate the Italian and European members and experts in the selection of the winner and special mentions. To participate: send the subscription form to the address concorsoNT@samoter.it attaching all the necessary material and downloading the form from www.samoter.com The International Samoter Award Ffounded in 1973, it is highly-regarded and sought-after recognition assigned for distinction in the development and success of site activity on a national and international scale. This award aims to emphasise the importance and efforts of those involved in expanding and consolidating an entrepreneurial system of absolute status in the world economic and social panorama, thereby becoming the home for technological innovation and scientific research. Awards for the 2008 edition in the “international country” category went to Panama for the project to widen the Canal, in the “designers” category to Geodata SpA, in the “machine constructors” category to Italian companies Merlo SpA and Officine Meccaniche di Ponzano Veneto SpA and in the “Italian company” category to Gruppo Ghella SpA and the "International company" to Acciona SA, Spain.

www.smopyc.es Data were officially presented at the Organising Committee meeting on 14th July, chaired by Barloworld Finanzauto

MORE THAN 450 COMPANIES HAVE RESERVED AN AREA OF 63,900 METRES AT SMOPYC 2011 The event will be the sector’s biggest forum of discussion to date 45 professional associations have already confirmed their participation Zaragoza, 15th July 2010. SMOPYC’s Organising Committee which includes representatives of the sector’s main companies and associations, met at Zaragoza Exhibition Centre on 14th July to continue preparations for the coming edition of the Show that will be staged from 5th to 9th April 2011. The dynamics of the committee which is divided into working groups, enabled tasks related to marketing, communications, logistics and services to be tackled more effectively The meeting chaired by Francisco Carrillo of Barloworld Finanzauto was also attended by Jorge García Orejana of CNH Construction, who holds the post of vice-chairman of the Committee, the Director of Zaragoza Exhibition Centre, José Antonio Vicente and most of the sales and technical team of SMOPYC.

MAJOR INTERNATIONAL PRESENCE As far as the internationalisation of SMOPYC is concerned, actions are planned to promote the Show’s capacity as a driving force for trade relations at a global level. Particularly noteworthy is the programme of interviews and the personalized agenda for exhibitors to meet up with international buyers from 40 countries, organized within the European exchange network; trade missions with the participation of more than a hundred prescribers from countries selected by Anmopyc, as well as the presence of buyers from strategic markets (Angola, Algeria, Brazil, Morocco, Russia, Poland, Mexico, China, Panama, Portugal and the Middle East) directly organized by SMOPYC.

MERLO, JOINS THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE A warm welcome was given to Merlo, one of the world leaders in the design and production of telescopic handling equipment that has recently joined the Organising Committee as well as the representatives of Manitou and JLG who had joined prior to the March meeting. Following the work carried out by each of the groups (marketing, communications, services and logistics) the plenary meeting was held to pool all of the details. The report on the commercial activities of international presentations, participation in conferences and assemblies, international missions or the new presentation initiatives in northern, eastern, southern and central Spain, was followed by the commercial data which, to date, reveal highly satisfactory figures: The number of exhibitors as of 14th July is 452, 68% of whom are Spanish and 32% from other countries. Space occupied: 63,907 m2, with 73% Spanish exhibitors and 27% foreign exhibitors. It is also noteworthy that 11% of the applications received are from new exhibitors. TO DATE 45 PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS HAVE CONFIRMED THEIR PRESENCE AT THE SHOW Another important aspect commented on at the Committee meeting was that 45 professional sector associations covering almost all the subsectors involved in SMOPYC have confirmed their presence and, furthermore, 29 of them plan to hold their assemblies, conferences or technical sessions within the framework of the show. Amongst these events there will be an important conference co-organised by Seopan and Anmopyc, in relation to the Construction Technology Platform and its activities. 54

September 2010

All of this will, without any doubt, make the event the biggest sector forum of discussion and internationalization in 2011. Participants also analysed the follow-up of all of the national and international communication campaigns with specific actions through the Internet, e-newsletters, and in the general and technical press of 34 countries. In relation to services, the new on-line visitor accreditation system was announced, allowing direct access passes to be downloaded to visitors’ own computers, wireless terminals with the possibility of transferring data to a memory stick and the special High Speed Train deal for Smopyc, an initiative whereby an agreement has been reached with Spanish Railways to reserve compartments in the early trains leaving Madrid and Barcelona on show days, with discounts of almost 40%, as well as a shuttle service to and from the Exhibition Centre and personalized attention for visitors. The new flight connections with six European countries available at the airport, the design of the lines interconnecting different parts of the city, the airport and the show, as well as information on agreements reached with hotels in the city of Zaragoza, which have duplicated their capacity, were also received with satisfaction by the committee members. Last, but not least, was the presentation of the new website www.smopyc.es with a highly practical, direct design providing all the necessary information with user-friendly buttons and including all of the documentation on the Exhibition Centre’s services for exhibitors (with forms that can be downloaded from the website), SMOPYC sector data, information on the city and its services. The aim is for the new website to offer a practical tool for all those who wish to obtain information.

Q2’10 REVENUE: MANITOU CONFIRMING GROWTH - Q2’10 Revenue of EUR 225m, up +39% sequentially vs. Q1’10 - H1’10 Revenue of EUR 387m, up +8.2% vs. H1’09 (EUR 358m) - Order intake strong again over Q2, with record order book at June 30 (5,400 machines) - H2’10 demand expected to cool off (low season, end of 2009 corrections) while revenue mainly dependant upon leadtimes and supplier situations - Focus on maximising manufacturing throughput and volume ramp-up - FY’10 Revenue expected to show low-teens growth over FY’09

Jean-Christophe Giroux, Manitou President & CEO declared: Net sales by division EUR in million RTH IMH CE Total Net sales by region EUR in million France Europe Americas Rest of the world Total

- „We post a strong Q2 with revenue of EUR 225m (a 40% increase over Q1’10 and also over Q2’09 year-over-year) coming as the natural translation of a great Q1 order intake. The better news comes from a similar level of orders in Q2, that paints positive colours for H2 revenue. Looking back, we believe most of these orders come from 2009 pushouts and natural replacement cycles, combined with traditional business seasonality. We still do not see volume pick-up signals, either for construction rental, agriculture expansion or dealers re-stocking. While we cannot predict orders for H2, we fully focus on delivering on our current order book, and on easing some of the operational pain created by suppliers situation and elongating leadtimes. Even if our quarterly pattern remains difficult to predict, it sounds like we can capture enough growth to post a 10-to-15% net revenue ramp over 2009 and confirm our path to recovery”.

Toyota Industries As the conclusion of a long-ago-initiated process, Manitou and Toyota Industries have signed today a share transfer agreement on Manitou’s remaining 20% into TIE (Toyota Industrial Equipment) SA for a EUR 11.3m value in cash. As a result, Toyota Industries has taken over full ownership of its French-based manufacturing operations, provided, however, that it does not compromise in any way the triple partnership between Toyota Industries and Manitou, with Manitou manufacturing forklift masts for TIE, Manitou reselling Toyota trucks in France (on an exclusive basis), and Toyota holding 3% of Manitou share capital.

“Red Series” Initiative While the majority of customer orders are still processed on a built-to-order model, Manitou is currently introducing a new concept whereas 10 “best-seller” models within the current range will now be produced to stock. Those models do not show any new or particular feature but are immediately available to customers thanks to limited buffer stocks. The initiative also aims at improving Manitou’s operational visibility, capacity to secure in advance qualified components from suppliers, and overall manufacturing quality and efficiency. Our innovative product range of modules The product range of MODULMAX with the series S-MODULE, G-MODULE and POWERMAX was developed with the worldwide unique characteristic of the interchangeability with other existing brands. With the innovation of the interchangeability the heavy haulage companies worldwide can choose the supplier of the modular vehicles and are not bound to one unique brand. The MODULMAX range is based on the combination of several 2 to 6 axle modules. Payloads going from 80 tonnes right up to 1,000 tonnes are possible. In fact, the upper limits of the equipment are mainly laid down by the regulations (load permitted on the ground etc.). The equipment can be used just as well on the public highway as inside factories. The legal limit on the public highway (often between 12 and 16 tonnes per axle line depending on the country) is much lower than the maximum technical load of 36 tonnes/axle line at 1 km/h. There are many possibilities as far as configuration is concerned. It is possible to opt for single modules, with a gooseneck or drawbar added, to fit lowbed platforms or an adaptor for transporting wind turbines. In addition it is possible to work in 3 or 4 files (i.e. with a half module or a whole module connected laterally). Everything is possible and thanks to the interchangeability with other brands, there are no limits for the customer. Faymonville modules are available in short term, metallized as standard and thanks to high-tech production tools produced with high precision. All current accessories, such as gooseneck, drawbar, loading platforms are also available. The POWERMAX is a modular vehicle (3 to 6 axle lines) with motorized axles capable of keeping up with a speed of up to 80km/h in 'free wheeling' mode, without any restrictions regarding the distance or load. The POWERMAX can be used in 3 operating forms: – as a standard modular trailer with all benefits of the MODULMAX-range. – as constitution of the truck in hills, where an additional force is necessary. With the POWERMAX a second or third tractor is not necessary anymore and the transport costs can be reduced considerably. – as self-propelled version for inter-factory use at low speed (5 or 6 km/h), without the backup of any external traction with a POWERMAX 6x4 up to 300 tonnes on flat ground. A semi-trailer pulled by a tractor has to negotiate a route which involves a few hills. In order to set off or be able to climb the hills, the entire road assembly requires additional power. Usually, the haulier will have to resort to one or more additional tractors to provide the necessary traction and/or propulsion. These accompany the transport in stand-by during many kilometers, occupy resources and consume energy without any use. To avoid having to resort to this additional tractor, Faymonville offers a POWERMAX semi-trailer equipped with motorized axles of its own. A cheap solution as it turns out, seeing that the additional tractor is very expensive – you can reckon around 250,000 EUR – for additional traction power that is after all only necessary on certain sections of the journey. If you add in the cost connected to the second driver and fuel consumption you have a measure of the validity of the system. The motorized axles of the abolished tractor are replaced by

the integrated motorized axles of the POWERMAX. The major advantage of the system lies in the fact that these motorized axles keep up with the speed of the tractor and the propulsion is switched on when needed. In case no additional force is needed, then the POWERMAX works as a normal trailer. There are some motorized axles for special haulage semi-trailers on the market but their speed is limited to about 15 km/h max. The Faymonville solution enables the motorized axles to reach a speed of 80 km/h in ‘free wheeling’ mode without any distance or load restrictions. The up to now available axles with a 15 km/h limitation, furthermore, have to be lifted once not in use or they give rise to overheating, and they cannot therefore support any kind of load. It’s a dead weight which essentially cuts the useful payload and increases the length of the vehicle. These axles with limited speed do not even have a type-approved braking system, unlike those on offer from Faymonville. A speed of up to 80 km/h and a type-approved braking system are the two main differences which set apart the POWERMAX from the motorized vehicles of the other manufacturers. The motorized axles get their power from a PPU or Power Pack Unit that is basically composed of a diesel engine with mounted hydraulic pump. From a performance point of view, you should also know that the complete traction force is available with a minimum of 12 tons of load per axle. A Powermax 12x8 (6 axles with 4 motors) generates a traction force of approximately 30 tons. 2 motorized axle sets represent the equivalent of a 6x4 or 8x4 tractor in traction terms. A POWERMAX 12x8 can thus substitute 2 6x4 or 8x4 tractors. We would also like to point out that the same system may equally be used in an self-propelled version, which therefore will not require the backup of any external traction, for inter-factory use at reduced speeds (5 or 6 km/h). Moreover a very important point should be mentioned: for the maintenance of the brakes, the hydraulic wheel motor does not need to be open nor to be dismounted. This fact guarantees an easy maintenance and low costs. The POWERMAX is the result of a partnership project of 3 specialists: SAF as well-known supplier of axles, Poclain as worldwide leader in the production of hydraulic motors, and Faymonville as one of the leading constructors of trailers for the heavy haulage industry. The 3 partners have gathered their entire knowhow in order to develop an optimized system easy to put into practice. All used components have already made their prove in other application, that means that although the POWERMAX itself is a new, even revolutionary product, the end used get a metasystem of proved components. For the technical support and the resupplying of spare parts, the worldwide networks of Faymonville, Poclain and SAF can be used. For the user this means very quick reaction and low costs. The POWERMAX can of course be coupled to al Faymonville module systems, but also to 70% of the worldwide operating modules of other producers with the guarantee of all technical and operational properties.

We present at the IAA: EUROMAX-N-4L-AX

Even lower The development of the Euromax responded to a need from transporters who were looking for multifunctional vehicles with optimized tare. With the Euro-N-4L-AX, Faymonville is expanding its range. While still retaining the platform length of 9,555 mm of the 3 axle version, we are now offering a light vehicle with a load height of 750 mm when loaded. This semitrailer is fitted with two fixed axles and two trailing axles and has 205/65 R 17.5 inch tyres. This Euro-N-4L-AX will be available in three versions: one version with outriggers, one without and one version with wheel troughs between each axle but without outriggers. The standard equipment remains identical to the original 3 axle version and the options available on this can also be found on the 4 axle. In the light of growing market demand, the first axle is available as pneumatic lift axle as an option on this vehicle. This can in particular be used as a starting aid. The bevelled edge of the gooseneck can this time be maintained up to a 5th wheel height of 950 mm loaded. Two types of ramp are available for each of these versions: either removable aluminium ramps, or folding spring ramps. The extension remains identical to that of the Euro-N-3L-A in order to allow the loading of a 40-feet container. From a conceptual point of view, the study bureau made it a point of honour to retain a maximum of accessories and parts which already existed on the previous version. This was in a spirit of flexibility and product standardisation. Light The Euro-N-4L-AX stands out therefore, just like its 3 axle cousin, because of its lightness. This vehicle has a tare of 8,650 kg in basic version. The secret of this particularly low tare for an extendable semi-trailer of this height lies in the conception of its chassis. In close cooperation with our supplier, we have been able to slightly modify the construction of the axles so that we can retain the chassis sections of the Euro-N-3L-A, while lowering the load height by 110 mm. This is a first for Faymonville. EUROMAX-N-4L-AX in brief – Tare weight: 8,65 t – Loading height: 760 mm – Loading platform: 9.555 mm, extendible by 4.300 mm – 1st axle can be raised – With outriggers or wheel trough

CEO and PRESIDENT of WACKER NEUSON SE to leave company (Munich, July 30, 2010) Dr. Georg Sick, CEO and President of Wacker Neuson SE, has informed the Supervisory Board that he will not be seeking to renew his contract once it expires on July 31 of this year. At the request of the Supervisory Board, Dr. Sick has agreed to continue as CEO until the end of the calendar year. Dr. Sick has been a member of Group management for 15 years. Following the conversion to a stock corporation (AG) in 2002, Dr. Sick was initially responsible for development and production on the Board, moving on to become CEO and President in 2005. Dr. Sick intends to pursue new business opportunities. The company will be looking for an external successor. Dr. Sick is leaving the company as the market shows dynamic signs of a rebound. The Group has returned to a growth path with high order intake, positive earnings and an equity ratio in excess of 75 percent. Dr. Sick was responsible for technology in the Group for many years. Under his leadership, numerous innovative products were developed and successfully launched. – “Under Dr. Sick’s management, the Group experienced strong organic growth, flanked by successful acquisitions and culminating in the merger with Neuson Kramer AG, a move that was extremely well received by the market. The Supervisory Board regards the long-term alliance with Caterpillar, which was finalized a few weeks ago under Dr. Sick’s leadership, as a significant milestone in the company’s future development. We regret Dr. Sick’s decision to leave the company and have asked him to continue as CEO until the end of the year,” states Hans Neunteufel, Chairman of the Supervisory Board.

– “I am proud to have been able to serve the Group during an extremely interesting period of growth that was only briefly interrupted by the economic downturn, – Dr. Sick explains. In addition to tackling various technology challenges, I was particularly keen to drive the company’s transition from a hidden champion to a strong capital market player while retaining its corporate culture. Company finances are strong. We have established a prime position in markets across the globe and have highly qualified managers and staff on board. The other members of the Executive Board are committed long term to the company. So this seems to be the right time for me to take on new challenges again.” Dr. Sick agreed to the Supervisory Board’s request to extend his term of office until the end of the year.
