Four flee burning car THE four occupants of a high-spec car that caught fire in Puerto Banus are being sought by police. While onlookers crowded around the burning vehicle, and officers cordoned off the area, the people who had been travelling in the Audi Q7 fled the scene. According to National Police, as the vehicle crossed the entry point to the port, something ignited in the back of the car. Witnesses claim the driver and passengers immediately got out and ran away. A card system is used to raise a barrier to allow cars to enter Puerto Banus, which are given to the owners of boats that moor in the port, although a limited number can be bought at the offices of the port concessionaire. As investigations developed, police recovered a card in the name of a Moroccan male, living in a European country.

Tourism jobs boost

THE number of workers employed in the tourism industry rose by more than 10 per cent to 129,050 between April and June this year compared to 2017, according to data. The Costa del Sol Tourism board’s statistics showed that the industry’s labour force now accounted for 20.5 per cent of Malaga Province’s workforce. Elias Bendodo, president of the board, said all should be aware of the contribution made by the sector to the area’s economy. “This data highlights the strength, weight and impact of the tourism in-

dustry in the economy of the entire province,” Bendodo said. The president added tourism’s share of Malaga’s workforce was higher than the equivalent figures for Andalucia and for Spain. Those stood at 14.3 per cent and 13.7 per cent respectively, according to data. The hospitality industry was the leading part of the sector in terms of the percentage share of tourism workers at 72.9 per cent, or around 94,060. Transport associated with tourism accounted for about 8.8 per cent or around 11,290 while other businesses totalled 18.4 per cent or 23,690.
