Nerja leads the way on hotel occupancy NERJA is the area of the Costa del Sol with most hotel book‐ ings this summer, it has emerged. According to the Association of Hotel Entrepreneurs (Ae‐ hcos), Nerja’s hotels will reach an occupancy rate of 72 per cent in August. Nearby Axarquia towns of Frigiliana and Torrox will also see occupancy of more than 63 per cent. Jose Luque, the head of Aehcos, said it was: “an improve‐ ment in the evolution of reservations and an increase in de‐ mand for the Costa del Sol, which we hope may rebound even more in the near future, in order to at least offset the losses caused by the restrictions of countries like the United Kingdom during the last months.” The move by the UK government to allow vaccinated na‐ tionals to fly back without quarantine from amber list coun‐ tries, including Spain, has reportedly sparked an increase in bookings on the Costa del Sol. Nerja, one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular tourism destinations, is now set to have the highest hotel occupan‐ cy rates following an increase in travellers to the area. Meanwhile, occupancy in August now stands at 62.03 per cent across the Costa del Sol.

HOMELESS: Melvin and Elizabeth Goddard are living in their car. EXPATS Melvin and Elizabeth Goddard are trying to raise funds after ill-health has left them homeless and in need of funding for the medical care they need. The couple, left the UK for a life of travel in 2013, have started a GoFundMe page to raise the funds after Melvin’s serious spinal problems left the expats stuck in Spain on their way back to the UK, without access to health care and homeless. The couple went travelling in 2013 before living in Portugal. While there, Elizabeth claims she worked and funded the couple, however last year they were

forced to try to make their way home to the UK when Melvin became ill and was rushed into hospital with doctors discovering he had had a stroke. In addition to his stroke, Melvin was diagnosed with inflammatory disease and doctors revealed that his degenerative disc disease had deteriorated, leaving the couple determined to drive back to the UK after he was told it was far too dangerous to fly. On their drive back through Spain the couple say they found the travelling made Melvin too ill however, and were forced to stop

in Granada Province. While living in Granada the pair rented a property, but Elizabeth’s inability to work while she cares for Melvin left them unable to pay rent, and the couple say they have become homeless after being evicted from their property and are now living in their car. The couple are now asking the public to help fund Melvin’s health care and their trip back to the UK.
