La Coruña police arrest 3 over death of Samuel NATIONAL POLICE officers in the Spanish province of La Coruña arrested three people aged between 20 and 25 years old on Tuesday, July 6, in connection with the death of Samuel Luiz in the city last weekend. After investigating officers analysed security camera footage of La Coruña promenade where 24-year-old Samuel was brutally beaten in the early hours of July 4, they identified and located suspects in the crime. Sources say all three two men and a woman - are from La Coruña. National Police reported the arrests via their Twitter account and their investigation is continuing, with the probability of more arrests being made. Investigators must now establish the reasons behind the crime and they believe Samuel was attacked because of his sexuality. Samuel had reportedly left a place to go for a smoke, together with a friend, and decided to make a video call to a friend who had not gone out that night. His attackers may have thought he was filming them. Witnesses have allegedly reported hearing Samuel being called ‘faggot’, with the 24-year-old receiving a serious beating, later dying in a local hospital.

Masses in El Salvador THE councillor for Popular Traditions, Elena Gálvez, and the Elder Brother of the Virgen del Carmen Brotherhood, David Roman, presented a poster on July 7, of the Virgen del Car‐ men festival, accompanied by its author Lucia Muñoz. The council has announced that two masses will be cele‐ brated in honour of the patron saint of sailors, on July 15 and 16 at 8pm, during which non‐perishable food can be donated that will go to needy families in Nerja and Maro. “For the second year in a row we are going to celebrate the Virgen del Carmen de Nerja in the Church of El Sal‐ vador, thus replacing the traditional acts of this festival,” said the councillor, who congratulated the author of the poster, Lucia Muñoz, and the Elder Brother, David Roman, for the composition of the work, “which extols the mar‐ itime symbols, and the Virgin in procession through the streets of the municipality.” “This difficult but necessary decision has been made, since at this time health must come first, so we will honour our patron in the Church of El Saviour. At the same time, we will contribute to helping the needy families of the mu‐ nicipality with all the food that the neighbours and visitors will bring in these two days, and that will be delivered to the Community Social Services Centre of our City Council,” explained the Elder Brother of the Brotherhood, David Ro‐ man.
JUST GIVING: Raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease. ALISDAIR ANDERSON is raising funds for Motor Neurone Disease by cycling from Ireland to Nerja in memory of his partner. The councillor for Social Services and Sports, Daniel Rivas, and the councillor for Residents, Javier Rodríguez, held a meeting on June 29 with Ralph Anderson, father of Alisdair Anderson, who is carrying out a solidarity initiative cycling the distance that separates Dublin and Nerja. The distance is approximately 2,750km and is to raise funds, through the Just Giving platform, for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association, aimed
at fighting Motor Neurone Diseases. The councillors have transferred the institutional support to this important initiative with which almost €50,000 have been collected so far. Alisdair is scheduled to arrive in our municipality on July 17, where he will be received in Tutti Frutti Plaza. Alisdair Anderson is carrying out this solidarity action in tribute to his partner, Ruth Staines, with whom he lived in the municipality for five years, working in various establishments in Tutti Frutti Plaza.
On April 3, Ruth passed away from the disease, at the age of 31, after being diagnosed in May 2020. Ralph Anderson has explained that Alisdair’s journey began on May 14 in Dublin, in front of Ruth’s house. From there, his son reached Wexford, southern Ireland, where he crossed by ferry to Wales, continuing the journey through the United Kingdom until he crossed the English Channel. He has travelled through France to the Pyrenees, and is currently in Spain, travelling towards Nerja along the Mediterranean coast.
