Thunderstruck Shot dead by Joe Gerrard THIS is the moment a bolt of lightning struck an apartment building in Malaga City during thunder storms which hit the Costa del Sol on Sunday. Lightning struck two buildings in Malaga City during the storm. A hotel and an advertising hoarding were also hit in Marbella, leading to the former catching fire. Spain’s AEMET Met Office said a total of 1,261 bolts of lightning were spotted in the skies over Malaga Province on Sunday. Some 832 hit land while 429 struck out to sea. Most hit between 9am and 1pm. It comes as the Costa del Sol was hit by another round of heavy rain throughout this week and as other parts of Spain were left flooded following storms. Sources from Andalucia’s 112 Emergency Services said they were called out a total of 32 times across Malaga Province due to heavy rain. Incidents included the flooding of streets and homes, falling trees and other debris and problems caused for road traffic. Towns affected included Benalmadena, Cartama, Estepona,

LIGHTNING STRIKE: The bolt knocked out the apartment’s power system. Fuengirola, Mijas and Torremolinos as well as Malaga City and Marbella. One bolt of lightning struck a 12-storey apartment building on Malaga City’s Calle Corregidor Francisco de Molina. The bolt hit a television antenna causing electricity to surge through the building’s wiring and power systems and breaking appliances plugged into the mains. The tower block was plunged into dark-

ness after its lighting system was shorted. Marbella’s Hotel Playa was also struck by the storm. Light-

ning hit a leaking gas pipeline which sparked a fire damaging its wiring, with firefighters called in to put out the blaze.

NATIONAL POLICE officers were tracing a suspect who remained at large at the time of going to press after shooting a man dead on an urbanisation in Marbella on Tuesday. Police sources said they were alerted to the shooting on Tuesday evening. It is believed to have taken place on the Sierra Blanca urbanisation, one of the wealthiest areas of the city, at around 8.30pm. Officers investigating the killing said their initial inquiries suggested the victim had been stood in a private garage between Calles Pizarro and Zabalea when the shooter approached him. The suspect, who was riding a motorcycle at the time, opened fire and hit the victim several times before fleeing. Some reports claimed the gunman had used an

AK47 assault rifle but this has not been confirmed by police. Officers with the National Police’s UDYCO homicide squad were despatched to the scene after emergency services were alerted. They have now taken over the investigation and police believe it may have been gang-related. The shooting is the latest in a spate of gun killings on the Costa del Sol. It comes after a man was shot in front of diners in a Torremolinos restaurant last month and another was gunned down in Estepona during the summer. Police trade unions have requested more resources to tackle what they claimed was a crime wave sweeping the region. A government spokesperson said authorities had no plans to do so.
