Smirking suspect

A SMIRKING suspect has been remanded in custody after a 27year-old man was shot to death with six bullets.

The defendant - who was seen smiling and waving as he was driven away from court has denied all knowledge of the events, claiming he was asleep after taking four or five trankimazin tablets, before going to bed at the time of the shooting on Sunday.

A body was found when residents in Alicante reported that a man was lying in the street covered in blood.

It is reported he had suffered three shots to the back of the

DECREASING: Numbers of smokers have dropped over a 25-year period.

One in five still regular smokers

by Glenn Scott CCOR DING to a r ecent s t udy, ther e is still a habitual smoker in 22 per cent of households across the Valencian Community.

The figures produced in a report by the Department of Health, with the cooperation of medical experts, citizens associations and scientific societies, shows that 23.4 per cent are men and 20.3 per cent are women.

Commenting on the findings, Health Minister Ana Barcelo said that “this strategy is an example of the effort

being carried out by the Department of Health to coordinate and develop all the necessar y measures to reduce smoking, create more smokefree zones and, in shor t, to protect the members of the Valencian Community from the harmful risks that accompany smoking.”

The last Health Sur vey of the Valencian Community took place in 2016, and pr oved that the number of people who smoke on a daily basis has been decreasing over the years.

As an example, 19.5 per cent of people over 14 years old declared themselves as

ha bitual smoker s in 2016 compared to 35.4 per cent in 1991.

Over the same 25 year period, the number of occasional smokers dropped from 13.3 per cent to 6 per cent.

On the occasion of World Lung Cancer Day, Ana Barcelo said that the number of people being diagnosed with tumours related to smoking accounted for 38.9 per cent of men and 17.7 per cent of women.

“Therefore, we must continue to emphasise to members of society about the impor tance of giving up smoking,” she said.

The aim of the talks is to warn the elderly members of the programme organised by IMSERSO of some of the danger s and scams operating in the area, and to prevent their br eak not tur ning into a nightmar e. T hey particularly concentrate on warnings about the notorious ‘pea scam’ and those that continually pester people into taking free excursions which are illegal.

“Do not under any circumstances stop and play - or even watch - the pea or potato game. It’s a scam and a trap,” the National Police state. “Even if you don’t play, while you’re standing around you could be liable to pickpockets.”

The IMSERSO visitors are also advised not to be tempted by those offering free excursions as, apart from the fact they are illegal, they are not insured and so if something wer e to happen to them, they wouldn’t be covered. One of the people in the audience actually admitted, in a low voice, that they were once the victim of this par ticular scam.

Most-wanted drug Briton sentenced

by Ray Chadwick BRITISH dr ug trafficker Brian Charrington has been sentenced by a cour t in Alicante to 15 years and six months in prison for smuggling 192 kilograms of cocaine from South America into Spain

Originally from Teeside in the nor th east of England, Charrington was high up on Europe’s mostwanted list when one of his many Costa Blanca homes was raided by police in 2013.

He is well-known in Spain as ‘el narco de

la Wikipedia’ because he allegedly updated his own Wikipedia biography, which listed his prolific criminal career after star ting out as a car dealer who ‘ eve n t u a l l y b u i l t a criminal empire with l i n k s t o G e r m a n y, Fr a n c e , S p a i n a n d Austria as well as connections in South

America and the United States.’

Char rington, who has previously served time for drug trafficki n g i n b o t h Fr a n c e a n d G e r m a n y, h a s n ow been fo u n d guilty of crimes against public health and money laundering, and ordered to pay more than €31.2 million in fines.

Five arrests in one day

IN the space of just 24 hours, National Police officers have arrested five people in Denia.

Coincidentally, the victim of the theft of his moped was in Denia National Police Station for mally repor ting the incident when he spotted someone passing nearby riding the stolen bike.

T he of ficer s car ried out a search and found the moped badly damaged, although they only took a few hours to find the person behind the theft.

Two other men were arrested after allegedly stealing a bicycle from inside a home.

In this case, they were spotted by neighbours who raised

the alarm and they were later arrested.

And finally, two teenagers were caught in the act of robbing a house, again with the owner inside.

National Police were quickly on the scene after the boys fled, but were able to find and arrest them.

3 arrested for iron theft THE Guardia Civil has arrested three men in Alicante in connection with the theft of 62 tons of ir on. A GROUP of alleged racist extremists have badly beaten up two young African boys in Denia.

The teenagers - both aged 14 - were kicked and punched all over their bodies and such was the extent of their injuries that they were both taken to hospital.

OVER the past couple of years, the number of streets in Benidorm that have seen their speed limit reduced to 20 or 30kph has been increased... but these restrictions are still being ignored by many drivers.

They have been complaining that having to travel at such speed adds time to their journeys,

Pothole repair demand JAVEA’S Councillor Juan Ortola has held a meeting with people living in the La Plana area about the state of the Cami del Cuartel road.

Local residents have complained their requests for solutions that have been requested for several years have not been actioned.

The major problems surround the aftermath of heavy rains which create large potholes that make access to people’s homes more and more difficult.

Jackknife driver trapped THE driver of a lorry involved in a s e r ious a c c id e n t on the AP-7 motorway has been freed after getting trapped in the front cabin.

The incident happened around 9.30am close to the Villajoyosa exit and, according to reports, the lorry probably jackknifed in the wet conditions after losing control on breaking.

However, the cause is still being investigated.

Three fire engines were deployed from Benidorm where firefighters freed the man from the vehicle after his cab, in effect, collided with his own truck after spinning on the road, leaving him unable to get out.

There were no reports of the man suffering any injuries.

THE La Capella district of Benissa has already seen work star ting to build a new sports centre in the area. The object of the investment is to expand facilities that can now include football, basketball and a skate park as well as meeting point for the local people, and should be completed within two months.

At a cost of €18,000 the current sandy space will be replaced with a suitable surface measuring 16m wide and 27m long and have a security fence erected, as well as new lighting, giving a play area that was missing from this part of Benissa. The times the area can be used will be restricted and agreed by the local people.

Teenage pizza lessons CONTINUING with its varied programme of events and activities for young people in the municipality, PlayJove in Javea has offered something different.

Following a suggestion made by those that attend the centre, PlayJove put on a c o o ke r y wor kshop in which they all lear ned to prepare a pizza.

Around 20 teenagers between 12 and 18 year s old took par t in the scheme in collaboration with El Raconet who took the ‘students’ through the making of the popular Italian dish and a l s o p r ov i d e d a l l the necessar y ingredients.

Cave quotas expected for 2019

Council plans for children TEULADA-MORAIRA Council held a meeting to deal with the municipality’s recent nomination as a CAI (Child Friendly Municipality). During the meeting, councillors came up with a plan of action for children and adolescents and explained the processes laid down by UNICEF in respect of children’s rights.

Councillors will organise a series of meetings with local organisations that have connections with young people, and will report back at a full council meeting.

Jenny Dodd, who lives in Torrevieja on the Costa Blanca, came up with the idea that foreign residents could also get involved with the annual Gran Recogida (Big Collection) after she saw a report on Spanish TV. Jenny said: “I am trying to bridge the gap between British people and the Spanish.”

During the event, volunteers hand out plastic bags in supermarkets, with the idea being for people to buy something extra to donate to the food banks. Jenny explained: “It can be any-

FIGURES recently released show that visitors to the Cova (Cave) Tallada in Denia have shown that they have reached potentially dangerous levels.

Experts have recommended a maximum number of 355 people should be able to visit the cave in any one day, 71 at a time.

However, studies carried out between July 15 and August 15 this year show an average of 437 people visited the area... and on one day 129 in one hour.

The visitor limits have not yet been formally implemented but those responsible for the Cova Tallada are expected to establish a quota system for next summer.

T he annual Gran Recogida is a significant event in the calendar and for this year runs from Friday, November 30 to Satur-

day, December 1 with many collections organised by volunteers in super mar kets across the countr y… so keep an eye out for it in yours.

This year the target is to collect 22 million kilos of non-perishable food, with 130,000 volunteer s helping at a total of 11,000 collection points.

Casa Gadea to get a facelift

MAYOR of Altea, Jaume Llinares, has announced the start of the bidding process for the rehabilitation works of the iconic Casa Gadea.

“Last Friday we r eceived the good news from the Ministr y of Culture, which will allow the work

on Casa Gadea to be carried out,” he said.

The total budget allocated for the project is €202,000 - none of which comes from the Altea Council coffers - and the deadline for completion is five months.

IN a pioneering initiative across the Marina Alta area, Benissa Council is aiming to promote ‘inter-culture’ schemes in the municipality as a means of the local people getting to know each other better. The aim is to get the various nationalities and cultures to share experiences and good practices that can only add to the neighbourly spirit.

Before the scheme was announced, a series of interviews were held with a number of foreign residents from a range of nationalities that represent different sectors of the local society.

Facelift for old N-332 businesses TWELVE years since Ondara was by-passed by the N-332, the local council has announced that it is looking to revitalise the commercial area along the old main road through the centre of the municipality... something that was promised at the time.

Now, Ondara Council is promoting a project called ‘Active Locals’ with the aim of improving the image of the area and thus encouraging new trade.

There are a number of properties along Avenida Doctor Fleming which have been empty for some time and a facelift is hoped to increase their sale or rental possibilities.

The attraction to the area of the s u m m e r t o u r i s t m a r ke t h a s i n creased rental char ges and so restricts the number of places avail-

able for longer term rents for those looking to be more independent.

It is becoming increasingly more difficult to find anything available for less than €500 per month; a price that many young people and families are finding it impossible to af for d in their own local ar ea.

Those that are available are either ver y expensive or in a poor condition.

Accor ding to repor ts, one of the cheapest on of fer was €460 per month for a one-bedroom apartment that was only available for seasonal or holiday rental.

Midnight drugs raid A SHOP owner in Benidor m has been ar rested for suspected drug trafficking in the area known as ‘the British zone.’

According to rep o r t s t h e L o c a l Po lice - with the help of sniffer dogs - carried out an inspection of the establishment at midday after receiving a number of complaints that they were alle gedl y selling alcohol beyond the 10pm limit, and they could also be dealing in drugs.

T h e d o g s d i s c ov ered a number of items in the store w hich included a large metal beer can which contained a fa ke b o t t o m u n d e r which 13 bags of marihuana and 37 black plastic bags of cocaine were found; a total of 40 grams.

Speed reductions from January

MEASURES: Number of deaths on Alicante Province roads is increasing.

by Darren Parmenter THE Spanish Traffic Department (DGT) has announced that it will be lowering the speed across 2,000 kilometres of roads across the Alicante Province.

The reduction from 100kph to 90kph across secondary roads is part of a packa ge of measur es which will be implemented in Januar y 2019 with the aim of curbing the amount

of deaths.

Accor ding to the latest data from the DGT, in 2016 a total of 947 traffic accidents wer e r ecor ded acr oss the Alicante Pr ovince in w hich ther e were 27 fatalities, 91 serious injuries and 1,330 minor. The number of deaths shows no sign of slowing down as in 2013 there were 17.

The limits will not only affect cars and motorbikes, since vans, buses and lor-

ries will also have to r educe their speed fr om 90kph to 80kph when the Royal Decree comes into effect.

It was also announced that the speed limit signs could be amended using adhesive metal plates, and similar to what was implemented back in 2011 when the then PSOE government reduced limits from 120kph to 110kpm as an ener g y saving measur e... w hich lasted for four months.

One man and his dog... found A YOUNG man and his puppy have been found unharmed after their car ended up in a ditch in Callosa d’en Sarria.

The alar m was raised after a car was spotted at the bottom of a ravine on the CV715. However, when the fire brigade arrived they discovered there was nobody inside the vehicle and so alerted the helicopter rescue ser vice to scour the area.

All the firefighters could find was a small dog cr ying and they suspected it was connected with the crash, although its owner was nowhere to be seen.

However, he was found around two hours later safe and well by the Local Police and the Guardia Civil after going to get help and confir ming that he’d left the dog in the car.

THIS past autumn, 15 members from the Costa Blanca Yacht Association (CBYA) char ter ed two yachts in Croatia. The two Bavaria 46 sailing yachts, entitled ‘Malbec’ and ‘Bar dolino’ were chartered out of Trogir, Croatia, and a cruising itinerary of five fabulous islands was enjoyed during the one week’s voyage.

T he cr ew tr avelled to Split and spent a couple of days touring the land and noting historical places.

The Diocletians Palace was a must see in Split, and the crew indulged in the local Cr oatian cuisine w hile preparing for their passage to various islands along the Dalmatian coast.

After 13 wonderful days in an exciting and interesting area of the world, all 15 crew members had left the ar ea, with a penchant of wanting more.

Politically incorrect? I plead guilty by Barry Duke

THERE are countless vinta ge comedy r ecor dings lost to new generations because they are now considered far too politically incorrect for today’s snowflakes and ar e r ar el y r eissued.

Well, not totall y lost, because many titles do wash up on YouTube.

W hen I discover ed that Ruth Wallis, one of my favourite singer s of the 1940’s and 50’s, had a presence on YouTube, I recently beseeched a Benidorm bartender to access the Internet and play a couple of her best known numbers, Queer Things and De Gay Young Lad from Trinidad.

As a teenager I was smitten by Wallis because she was the first entertainer I’d

ever heard who tackled the issue of homosexuality in a risqué but far from offensive manner. She was way ahead of her time and was a major influence in my teena ge ‘coming out’ years because her lyrics made me understand my ‘condition’ was absolutely no cause for concern.

None in the bar had heard Wallis before and they loved her. But one humourphobic gay g r ump asked me whether I understood how ‘objectionable’ Wallis - who died aged 85 in 2007 - was.

I r aised an eyebr ow and asked ‘how so?’ ‘Well, he replied, one song used the word ‘pansy’ and the other used ‘fairy’ and ‘queer’.’

I rolled my eyes and tried to explain that Wallis used the terms in an affectionate rather than a nasty way. Indeed millions, I would say, were helped out of the closet with her humor ous boundary-breaking songs.

Nothing offensive there, but he wasn’t buying it and accused me of bigotry.

used to suppress good oldfashioned humour.

Was Oxford student Sam Br own guilty of ‘hate speech’ when, in 2006, he asked a mounted policeman: ‘Excuse me, do you realise your horse is gay?’

Yes, was the initial reaction. His ‘homophobic’ question was deemed likely to cause ‘harassment, alar m or distress’ and he was arr ested under section 5 of

the Public Order Act. To its credit the Crown Prosecution Service recognised the idiocy of the char ge and dropped it.

In 2009, Flintshire County Council’s canteen changed the ‘offensive’ name of spotted dick to ‘spotted Richard.’

A year before Tunbridge Wells Borough Council instr ucted staff to drop the wor d ‘br ainstor ming’ and suggested ‘thought showers’ instead. It argued that brainstorming might offend mentall y ill people and those with epilepsy.

And in 2015 an unnamed UK school banned a pupil from using a Wonder Woman lunchbox. It told the kid’s parents: ‘We have defined ‘violent characters’ as those who solve problems using violence. Super heroes certainly fall into that category.’

It’s a cliché now to say ‘political cor rectness has gone mad’ but it really, REALLY has! I want no part of it, and to hell with the consequences.

Gender violence guide issued

Medieval market rescheduled THE Medieval Market that was due to take place in Ondara over last weekend was cancelled due to the poor weather forecasts, and has been rescheduled to Saturday and Sunday December 1 and 2.

Despite the new arrangements, the market will still be held in the same location between the Prado and Plaza de Toros on Avenida General Bosch and Plaza Vicent Andrés Estellés.

BENISSA Council has recently presented a new guide aimed at both preventing and dealing with the aftermath of gender violence.

The announcement was made by Paula Sanchez de Pazos from the Department of Equality along with representatives from the Women’s Centre who have collaborated to produce the guide in several languages, namely Spanish, Valencian, Arabic, English, Romanian and German.

One purpose is to offer a message of trust to possible victims and to explain that all municipal buildings - such as the town hall, health and sports centres - are regarded as ‘safe spaces’ where members of staff have been specially trained to deal with gender violence issues.

ACCESS: Monthly voucher from December for buses and TRAM.

Flat fares from December

by Darren Parmenter COMING into effect from December, Alicante is offering a flat rate for €40 a month to use all the buses and the TRAM service.

The new 30-day voucher will allow unlimited trips on both services, and was announced following an agreement between Alicante Council, bus and TRAM operators, drivers and representatives of local business.

The €40 ticket will cover the entire TAM (Alicante Metropolitan Transpor t) system

which integrates the buses and TRAM across Alicante, San Vicente del Raspeig, San Juan de Alicante, Muchami el and Campello.

Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez said that “the commitment to provide access to all users is met without age limits and will benefit everyone in Alicante who uses the public transport system.”

He went on to say that such a measure of a flat fare subsidised by the council was a promise when the new government team ar-

rived. “We are convinced that it will be a success,” said Councillor Gonzalez.

In addition, a new package of measures were agreed for the introduction of a free bus during the Christmas period that will go around the city centre of Alicante and encourage drivers to leave their cars at home.

Plans were also announced for the introduction of five new buses next March four of which will be hybrids - as well as the installation of WiFi in all public transport.

Fake porn profiler arrested NATIONAL POLICE in Elche have arrested a 42-year-old Spanish man for allegedly using a fake identity in order to exchange pornographic images on social media.

According to reports, the detained man used both the name and a photograph of another person to create his false online profile, understood to be the name of someone the female victim knew.

Once the friendship was accepted on Facebook and gaining trust with her ‘friend’ the arrested man then began to send and receive images.

His real identity was discovered by investigators who followed the digital trace left by the messages and was able to identify the WiFi network from where he sent the images. The man was arrested for crimes associated with identify theft and privacy issues.

Police injured in car chase THREE policemen have been injured following a car chase on the road between Alicante and Monforte del Cid after a vehicle was stolen in Elche.

The incident resulted in two people a 34-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman - being arrested after being suspected of stealing fuel and batteries from the Las Atalayas industrial area.

However, before their arrest the couple tried to ram the police officers in the stolen car and had earlier failed to stop at a check point when requested. During the high-speed chase, the car drove through a number of red traffic lights and narrowly missing other vehicles.

Burial of Brit holidaymaker THE funeral for a British motherof-two who died of a suspected heart attack a day after arriving on the Costa del Sol is set to take place today (Friday).

Jackie Lee, 57, from Senghenydd in Wales, had been having dinner with her husband Colin last month, when she told him she could not breathe.

She told her husband: “I’m dying, tell the kids I love them,” before passing away just one day into the couple’s holiday in Benalmadena.

Jackie’s husband Colin said his first thought was that she was having a panic attack.

He added: “Within minutes of that we think she’d passed away.

It was devastating.”

Jackie’s family had to pay for her body to be repatriated back to Britain as the couple did not have holiday travel insurance.

“Jackie always made a point of getting insurance as she had a pacemaker, but getting ready for the holiday was a little bit more rushed than normal as we only knew we were going about a week or so earlier,” Colin said.

A Go Fund Me page subsequently set up by family members to pay for the repatriation raised more than €14,850, exceeding the more than €11,210 goal.

Jackie’s family said they would donate the difference to the Aber Valley charity which helps families in similar circumstances.

Gunned down POLICE continued to search for a man yesterday (Thursday) who shot another dead in a Marbella

The shooting is said to have taken place on the Sierra Blanca urbanisation, one of the most affluent in the city, at around 8.30pm last Tuesday. Police believe the killing may have been gang-related.

Initial investigations suggest the shooter approached the victim while the latter was stood in a private garage between Calles Pizarro and Zabalea.

The gunman then opened fire, shooting the victim several times before riding away on a motorcycle. Some reports claimed that the gunman had used an AK47 assault rifle but police have not yet confirmed this.

The National Police’s UDYCO homicide squad was called in after the killing and they have now taken over the investigation which remains ongoing.

The shooting follows a spate of similar incidents on the Costa del Sol this year.

Many of them are believed to be connected to organised crime.

Drugs group bust AFTER working on it for 15 years, Benahavis now has a new PGOU master urban plan, which is expected to come into force in the next week, once minor alterations have been made.

The Junta de Andalucia approved 92 per cent of the plan this week, and the council is convinced that it can put the few changes the Junta demanded into effect within a fortnight. Benahavis will now be able to build about 2,000 new homes, which will increase the present total by more than 10 per cent. Most of them will be luxury properties, making the municipality a leader of such accommodation in Andalucia.

With the new PGOU plan, Benahavis becomes one of the areas in Malaga Province with the most land for public facilities and green zones, as 30 per cent of the total has been reserved for this purpose.

Collaboration with the Polish authorities showed that the per son didn’t exist, and so the effor ts of the Spanish investigators concentrated on finding out his real identity.

Once they’d uncovered who he was and where he was, the arrest took place in San Fulgencio, but even then the man of fered fake ID when stopped.

The man has been sent to prison without bail and awaiting trial.

THE success of the recent Gastronoma Food Fair in Valencia was confir med with the more than 17,000 people who visited, and the municipality of Denia had a ver y impor tant part to play.

Designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy back in 2015, Denia was one of

eight similar communities from other European countries and Asia present at the fair.

It was agreed that some of the high spots of the prestigious international event were the demonstrations by Denia chefs Br uno Ruiz and Frederico Guajardo.

Ruiz presented two

signature dishes, Prawn below zero and his own version of the famous regional red pepper, aubergine and fish dish, Espencat.

Guajardo produced cured squid with slowcooked confit leeks as well as mojama - cured tuna - and cured blue whiting with vegetables of different textures.

CALPE, the only municipality in the Marina Alta to benefit from aid from the European plan known as EDUSI, has been given the keys to the future... in this case literally.

Thanks to a EDUSI subsidy of €185,378, Calpe Council has been able to buy a house in the old town - on Calle Llibertat and will convert it into a socalled ‘21st Century Tourist Office’.

The existing owner of the property, Josefa Vives Mengual, officially handed over the keys to the Councillor

for Planning, Bernardo Moll, earlier this week.

It is still not certain how this home will be m i r a c u l o u s l y transformed into a space for new technologies which will offer tourist information 24-hours-aday, seven-daysa-week... but that doesn’t mean that it will be physically open for all those hours.

H o w e v e r , thanks to the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) the office will never sleep, although maybe in the virtual sense.

Keys to the future

Cleaning contract for historic site CALPE Council has allocated €14,989 for the contract for the maintenance and conservation work of the archaeological site situated at the Baños de le Reina.

In addition, the successful bidder - Alebus Patrimonio Historico - will be required to keep the paths and access routes clean and tidy, as well as collecting and disposing all the r ub bish and waste.

T he period of the contr act

will last for four months.

The work will continue what has been carried out by a number of volunteer bodies in recent times - from the IVAJ and Amicitia often supported by municipal workers - and is all part of the Basic Action Plan drawn up to preserve this ancient site.

It’s the first time that the Baños de le Reina will have an officially dedicated service to carry out such tasks and shows the importance Calpe Council

place on this part of the municipality’s heritage and their commitment to continue with the ongoing research which may unveil even more of the area’s history.

The archaeological site occupies an area of about 10,000 square metres, with around 600 metres of fencing - which must also be maintained as part of the contract awarded - and around 200 metres of pedestrian areas.

Free Valencian classes in Denia DENIA Council has once again launched free classes in the Valencian language aimed at the adult population. The registration period is now open and will remain so until December 14.

The classes will run from January 14 until June and all levels from A1 to C2 will be taught, with the A1 level being the most basic and will allow those completing the course to know and understand the day-to-day language needs.

This is the only level that no exam will be taken, with the rest requiring an exam.

money AS the Spanish government considers ways in taxing the profits people make when investing in Bitcoins (the cryptocurrency) or in cracking down on money laundering, an article keeps appearing on Facebook which is essentially a scam.

According to this article, the Spanish government has spent €500 million in purchasing the Bitcoin Code and it forecasts that by 2020, the Spanish economy will have earned so much money from the investment there will be no poverty in the country any longer.

Naturally, lucky investors who have received this announcement (which is repeated by a number of different posters) are invited to get in at the ground floor and take advantage of this new opportunity.

Sadly, this is just one of a number of scams which appear on social media and so bad was

the use of Facebook to promote Bitcoin cons that earlier this year, Martin Lewis, the British consumer advisor, who runs Mon eySavingExpert.com, ac-

tually sued Facebook.

He blamed the company for allowing and even promoting scam postings on its social network, with many featuring Lewis himself.

Lewis contended that Facebook allowed paid adverts to appear without making any attempt to check the background of any of the promoters and he claims that he will share any court settlement among the victims of the fake bitcoin investment scheme ads if he wins the case.

At its height, one bitcoin was worth €17,500 and now it is worth less than €4,000 which tells a story in itself.

(Sm)All change ONE of the effects of inflation over the years has been the withdrawal of low value coins in different countries around the world.

Many who were brought up in the UK can still remember the farthing, halfpenny, thruppeny bit and sixpence, but with the introduction of decimal currency in 1971, all disappeared except for the half ‘p’ and that didn’t last too long.

The simple fact is nowadays, the cost of production of low value coins often exceeds their face value and governments have tended to keep the low value coins simply because their disappearance would indicate gathering inflation for which the government in power would be blamed.

As metal prices have escalated, it has also been necessary to effectively devalue the low denomination coins by changing their metal content and plating them.

It now seems likely the UK will phase out the 1p and 2p coins within the next few years and may even consider introducing a £5 coin as its life expectancy is much greater than the equivalent note.

Now Belgium has indicated it intends to restrict the use of 1c and 2c coins and could pass a law requiring shops to round up or down prices to the nearest 5c.

The European Central Bank has said it does not wish to see these two coins disappear from circulation, but if the worst came to the worst, Italy could return to the days of giving matches and sweets as change.

It’s not like the 1970’s or 1980’s where you could easily identify and remember the trends.

Having trained at The Savoy in London, my food has always been based on classics with a modern twist. I have an underlying traditional French/ English heritage with an inter national edge after working in Asia and the Middle East.

I was excited to meet up with some chefs that I had worked with and trained years ago and eat in a variety of London and UK restaurants.

So off on my travels I went with the first stop my daughter Serena, who runs a beautiful boutique hotel called Sheene Mill in the village of Melbourn near Cambridge, dating back to the 1700’s.

www.thelittlegeranium.com it turned out to be a story of Serena, myself and my ex-wife Sally and how we all got along (or not!) along with life’s antagonistic twists. It was more like a comedy than a documentary!

Sheene Mill was always my dream place. I owned The Pink Geranium, a thatched restaurant next door to it, and I always promised that I would buy the competition! Sheene sits on about three acres of landscaped gardens with the River Mel running under the building.

All the rooms and most of the restaurant tables have views of the mill pond with swans and ducks playing in the

fountain, it is very beautiful. In 1996 I bought Sheene after falling out with my first wife Sally.

I think that I saw it as a solution, you run The Pink Geranium and I will run Sheene I said! But when I got under the skin of the proper ty I soon realised what a monumental task I had undertaken.

Sally and I were back together by now and so with her interior and management skills and my kitchen skills we tur ned it into a great success, that was until we split up again 10 years later! In 2012 my daughter Serena was all grown up and we had an oppor tunity to lease Sheene to her and her husband to be, Jordan.

Serena would have only been 24 then and we could instantly see that her focus and determination to get Sheene back on the map again

was succeeding and this beautiful hotel was being restored through their passion.

I know the struggle she has been through, the staff causalities and the dramas but then recently, out of the blue Serena, Jordan and their fabulous team (headed up by Serda and Emma) won Restaurant of the Year award (A Her tfordshire Life award ). I flew in to see her and celebrate the award as well as tasting and writing about the food and the restaurant.

I had dinner at Sheene with my best man David, we had the eight-course tasting menu cooked by Chef Simone, starting with canapés which included smoked haddock beignets with chorizo mayo, goats cheese churros, truffle and ham hock ter rine with granny smith puree.

There are many charities helping worthy causes several of which Chris also suppor ts. They do, thankfully, have a lot of backing, but the dogs don’t seem t o h a ve s u c h a strong voice and that i s w h y s h e fo c u s e s on them especially b y w o r k i n g cl o s e l y with Donna who is a vo l u n t e e r at Benidor m Dog Homing.

Chris, using her vast knowledge and skills as an event organiser soon tapped into her many contacts to organise the s p e c t a c u l a r s h o w, S a ve M y L i f e 2 , w h e r e eve r y o n e i s more than glad to g i ve t h e i r t i m e f o r fr ee to this wor thy charity show. People are flying in from the UK to be part of this fantastic day of enter tainment. Donna speaks with such passion a bout the welfare of m a n / w o m a n ’s b e s t friend. She has an encyclopaedic knowledge about these dogs and the challenges of tr ying t o ke e p t h e m a l i ve and well. T his nonprofit charity shows where ever y cent is spent. The amount of wor k that goes into the welfare of these poor creatures from adver tising them for adoption, organising tr anspor tation to building new kennels seems never ending.

The best method to help strays is to stop the problem occurring through neutering programmes.

Fe w e r p u p p i e s a n d kittens mean fewer cases of suf fering and mor e help for those on the streets.

W i t h o u t ch a r i t i e s going in to private shelters and sterilising these animals, the situation will never change.

The problems have

built up for the last 50 years, when flats were constructed in the cities and people left the mountains and countr yside to g e t w o r k a n d l i ve there. Since the ‘70s things have become more difficult and a r e n ow t o t a l l y o u t of contr ol. We need to focus on addressing the root problem, w hich is neutering both stray and private owned dogs.

Fa c t : O n e f e m a l e dog can have around 12 pups in one year : t h at ’s ove r 6 0 d o g s in her lifetime. Multipl y that by all the pups that her pups will have, and we are looking at least 50,000, just from one d o g ! Ye s , O N E d o g can produce well over 50,000 dogs.

They are still a long wa y o f f g e t t in g t h e answers they want to h e a r a n d se e b u t mustn’t give up hope.

They must remember there are some wonderful people doing a ma zin g wo r k like Ch r is a n d Do n n a .

Anti-white Europe

Spain currently tops the list of Mediterranean countries by the number of migrant sea ar rivals. Over 47,500 migrants arrived here since the beginning of the year.

As soon as migrants set foot on Spanish soil they high five each other and frolic on the red car pet laid out for them. Undocumented migrants will be protected and enjoy access to the public purse. Very few migrants are refugees in the accepted sense of the term: they are economic migrants.

However, self-sufficient ethnic-Europeans are obliged to jump through bureaucratic loops to acquire right of residency without guarantee of success. Is this not anti-

“What evidence are they supposed to have? They don’t have council tax bills or proof of where they live. They are children; they have gone to school here all their lives, English is their mother tongue. I was just so shocked when we got the refusal letters.” (Editor’s note: The couple won an appeal earlier this year).

Imagine the racket and media uproar if such cases as these, and there are hundreds of similar refusals, were applied to non-whites. If we are going to root out racism then let it begin at home and let us look instead for anti-white prejudice. It isn’t hard to find.

Then one day I put some stones in the pockets of the clothes to m a ke t h e m h e a v i e r h e put them on his scales, h e s l o w l y m ov e d t h e weight bar looked at the pile of rags, then glanced at me and said: “Never for get young man, you can never bullshit a bullshitter!”

I left his shop with my tail between my legs without a penny for my effort.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE were looking at ‘possessives’ last week and we haven’t quite finished with them yet. To be more specific, we went through possessive adjectives, and this is what we found out that they look like:

My mi, mis Your (familiar singular) tu, tus His/her/its/your (formal) su, sus

Possessive pronouns

the word ‘my’ describes the book as belonging to me, so is therefore an adjective. However, I could also say ‘This book is mine.’

We ca n n o t sa y ‘T h is is min e b oo k’ a n d n e it h e r c a n we sa y ‘T his book is my,’ so it is clear that the wor ds ‘my’ and ‘mine’ p er for m d if fe r e n t f u n c t io n s.

The word ‘mine’ can be used to replace ‘book,’ for example in the sentence ‘It is mine’ (ie ‘It is m y b oo k ’) a n d t h e r e fo r e is called a possessive pronoun.

Now her e ar e the possessive pronouns in English and Spanish.

Our nuestro, nuestra, nuestros, nuestras Your (familiar plural) vuestro, vuestra, vuestros, vuestras Their/your (formal) su, sus Now, you may or may not realise that we have not yet translated the wor d for ‘mine’ or ‘your s’ w hich ar e also ‘possessives.’

These words are in fact possessive pronouns, not possessive adjectives, and I think this statement is going to require some more explanation.

IT’S that time of year again when we are reminded of the onset of winter and the need, for some of us at least, to get our jabs to ward off the dreaded gripe, aka flu.

Having suffered a very bad bout of influenza some years ago which left me permanently with asthma, I am fully aware of the seriousness of the disease. But in spite of that and after much research and soul searching, I decided five years ago that I would forego the annual injections and concentrate on prevention in other ways.

This was a personal choice and I do not advocate others necessarily following my example.

But that aside, I have been reflecting on the wonders of medical science today and how once fatal diseases can now be alleviated routinely. And having recently reread The Great Plague in London

by Walter George Bell, a fascinating and often gruesome account of a ravaged 17th century London, it for cefull y br ought home to me

If you run your eye over these lists you will see that there are some overlaps between the two for ms in both English and Spanish. English gener all y adds an ‘s’ to the possessive adjective to m a ke t h e p r o n o u n , e x c e p t i n ‘his’ and ‘its’ which already have an ‘s’ in the adjective for m, whilst all the for ms of ‘nuestro’ and ‘vuestro’ are the same as adjectives and pr onouns in Spanish.

T h i s i s w h y i t ’s ve r y h a r d t o tr anslate these wor ds singl y without seeing them or hearing them in the context of a full sentence.

Yo u m i g h t f i n d the following a good way of remembering exactly how we use possessive pronouns.

W hen you listen to small children fighting over a toy you may well hear: ‘¡Es mío!’ ‘No, es mío,’ ‘No, es mío’ and after a lot of pulling and tugging, one of them bites the other one, and the other one screams.

We saw that we can say, for example ‘This is my book,’ in which case

It is estimated that at least 100,000 people succumbed to the plague in London alone - a quarter of the population. And no wonder that the disease developed and took hold so rapidly considering some of the less than hygienic practices of the residents, and the complete absence of a sewage disposal system.

Well, not quite tr ue, because slops and human waste were disposed of by simply tossing the contents of chamber pots and other rubbish into the streets or the River Thames.

My dad used to call chamber pots Jerries, because they resembled a German soldier’s helmet, or gazunders, because they gazunder the bed. But I’m rambling . . .

T he stench alone must have been dreadful and imagine the truly appalling job of driving a horse and cart through the streets, calling for the dead to be brought out for transpor tation to the plague pits for mass burial.

And the plague was not limited to the towns and cities alone with great swathes of countryside vil-

In my village in Suffolk there is a broken headstone that sits in the church porch and depicts a carved skull and crossbones, the common symbol denoting a victim of the Black Death or plague.

Whether it was an isolated case or just one surviving tip of an iceberg, nobody knows for sure as the script on the stone has been eroded away with age.

Who knows, there may have been a plague pit in the village and if the pathetic appearance of my carrots and leeks were anything to go by year on year, it was probably under my vegetable garden.

Bell Alley was a poor area on the banks of the Thames and stood in what is Westminster today. It is one of the many areas mentioned in documents from the time and was a depressing slum of crumbling timber houses in a stifling cul-de-sac, separated only by a narrow pavement. Infection was rampant, with the locked doors of plague sufferers marked with red crosses along with the supplication: ‘Lord have mercy upon us.’

Some might say that a pestilence still thrives in this area. It’s called the House of Commons.

Around the world in a bottle

by Sandy Shore A MAN never forgets his first drink, hence his lifelong interest in the female décolleté. Later on, I could never under stand the appeal of beer. Of course I sipped a little to test the brew but far preferred Sarsaparilla.

Sailors, so they say, have a preference for rum, but it did little for me when I began to wear bellbottoms. Nevertheless, it was par for the course for sailors to head for the bar s when mooring at foreign ports.

By the way, the question sometimes arises as to why ships are known as ‘she’ rather than ‘he.’ Surely it is obvious; on approaching a port, a ship keeps its bottom hidden, paints its topsides, and heads straight for the buoys.

But, that is another story to those I reluctantly tell lest my sons read of their dear father’s dalliance with alcohol in its many forms.

Older readers might recall the 1954 movie On the Waterfront which starred Marlon Brando. High drama, the movie puts the spotlight on the mobsters who infest New York’s Hoboken waterfront.

Fast forwar d just five year s and I was in those same joints. Much to my

shame, I was a teenage leader of a gang recruited from the crew of one of the great ocean liners moored at the Hoboken piers. By this time, I was knocking them back; doing so was the unavoidable culture of the seafarer’s calling.

Being British, there was

lofty disdain for American beer but beggars can’t be chooser s, ‘when in Rome’ and all that nonsense. The best, or rather the worst was yet to come.

I first tasted Anis, which is aniseed-based liquor when we called in to Beir ut, Lebanon. Never forgotten,

the unseemly r uckus in a brothel that occurred later left me with bruises and a hangover of such severity I grimace as it is recalled.

Lessons will be learned?

Well, not quite. My first taste of Saki occurred naturally in a Japanese por t. Oh, the contempt was writ large on my handsome visage as my taste buds came into contact with what we Jack Tars describe as virgin’s pee. I later had little recollection of keeling over like a ship in dr y dock whose suppor ts have collapsed.

Let’s not go there, Nigeria I mean. Britain’s Elder Dempster and Palm Line fleets regularly sailed up the creeks of West Africa, venturing deep into the Dark Continent’s jungles where the natives are fond of a tipple too.

Palm Gin is sap from the palm tree so don’t try this at home. It is called gin because it looks like the stuff, but is more potent than Saki and Anis combined. I really should have stuck to Sarsaparilla.

Intellectually gifted children

These children are special, especially when regarding their needs and demands in comparison with other children. These special features can be a problem if they are not adequately addressed.

I strongly recommend these children to be assessed by a trained professional.

However, I would like to share with our readers some of the features we can observe in these children so parents can identify if their child is intellectually gifted.

It is not difficult to identify an intellectually gifted child. We should observe some behaviours and emotional reactions that differentiate them from other children while being at school or at home.

Either way, we should remember that a professional diagnoses is

The first Christmas is the most difficult, I know that because my Mother died one Christmas Morning. Ever since her passing I have celebrated a time of the Year she always loved. I like to think that if she looks down that the Christmas tree is decorated for her.

motoring THE British land speed record (LSR) attempt has run out of financial road and gone bust.

Supersonic land vehicle Bloodhound requires another €28 million to guarantee funding for future record attempts, up to and including eventually going for 1,000mph on an 11.8-mile track at Hakskeen Pan in South Africa’s Nor ther n Cape.

The administrator is FRP Advisor y LLP and Andrew Sheridan, its joint administrator, acknowledges the ground-breaking nature of the Bloodhound project.

“Administration provides some breathing space to identify an investor who will bring the guaranteed funding, impetus and expertise required to drive the project,” he said.

“The €28 million the Bloodhound requires to break the land speed record is a fraction of the cost of, for example, finishing last in a Formula 1 season or r unning an America’s Cup team.”

It was always going to be an uphill task, both technically and financially.

conferences and endless press rounds, neither of them have flagged or been anything less than supremely enthusiastic.

Many were called on in that time but few stepped up, though they have had crucial sponsorship and partnerships with Rolls-Royce, Castrol, Rolex, Cisco, Oracle and Geely, as well as the Ministry of Defence, which loaned expert staff and provided the EJ200.

The public too, have been

inspired by the project, donating millions to have their name on the tail fin or to watch the first runs of the car at Newquay aerodrome last autumn.

It was actually Paul Drayson, businessman, amateur racing driver and the then British Minister of Science back in 2009, who encouraged the duo to push on and try to break 1,000mph.

With major skills shortages hindering UK manufacturing companies, Drayson was also

looking to inspire a new generation of scientists and engineers with the ‘Apollo Effect.’

To that end, education was always key to the Bloodhound project and in its role as a contributor to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) campaign, it has reached more than two million children since launch, including 120,000 UK schoolchildren a year.

Even the low-level air-speed record, which is no longer contested, stands at ‘only’ 994mph.

Unlike Formula 1, there are no restrictions on design, besides the stipulation for four or more wheels, two of which are required for steering.

The rest is down to the imagination and creativity of the team, as well as the skill and bravery of the driver.

Mar k Chapman, Bloodhound’s chief engineer, has kept the team plugging on in the face of adversity, and said: “With the right support we have no doubt that the project will achieve its aims and could be racing for the record in as little as 10 months.”

THE Javea International Tennis Club (JITC) have had mixed fortunes in their two recent matches.

Firstly, the JITC (La Sella) A team visited Sol Par k, Moraira and they made one change to their normal team with Nick Eley making his first team debut replacing Andre Trublet.

Both Sol Park teams started strongly and were both 4 5 up. However, the JITC first pairing of Hans Hoekstra and Alan Gibbs managed to hold their service game to level at 5 - 5 and went on to finish 8 5 winners. The second pairing of Peter Jones and Nick Eley were always one game behind but kept fighting back to win 8 - 6.

MIXED FORTUNES: The JITC had a comprehensive win and a draw (File image). and Gerard van Banthem and it went right to the wire. The JITC pair won the tie break 8 - 6. Alan Gibbs and Nick Eley won 8 - 4 against Leo Marg de Berg and Rob Shot.

This gave JITC an unassailable 4 - 0 lead and they won the remaining two sets 8 - 7, 8 - 4.

Final score: JITC 6 - Sol Park 0.

KIND: The weather kept clear for the last outing of the Orba Warblers.

Those lucky Warblers THE Warblers were extremely lucky with the weather this week. It rained heavily on Tuesday and has continued in that vein since Thursday, but Wednesday was lovely, the sun always shines on the Warblers... well nearly always.

Division One set the pace this week with some great scores.

Reaffirming his division one status was John Daniels who led the division with 40 points, and establishing himself as a category one player now was Steve Smith with 39 points. In third place with 34 points was Bob Edwards.

Division Two was topped by two competent rounds of golf with Paddy Kenmore taking the

top spot from Rosemar y Edwards on count-back, both with 36, and third place went to Arthur Sullivan scoring 32.

The Nearest the Pin prizes were won by the irrepressible Rosemary Edwards on hole 8 and Chris Hoare on hole 14.

There was also a ‘Warbler ball’ for guest player, Bill Mackenzie for a ‘two’ and for his score of 33.

The next game will be at Alicante next Wednesday (first tee at 10.30am) so players need to be there for 9.45am.

JITC travelled to the newly improved cour ts at Altea Hills for their next fixture where they found the playing surfaces immaculate as is new netting and surrounding gardens.

Both teams started under a glorious blue sky, with JITC’s second couple of Hans Hoekstra and Ann Goodsell recording an impressive 6 2, 6 - 0 win, in ver y quick time. Altea’s first pair, Martin Wagstaff and Britta Silcock, began well and won the first set 6 - 3. They were 3 - 0 up in the second set when Julia Hall had to stop playing due to injur y. This made the score 2 - 2 in sets.

JITC had to concede the Ladies doubles but won the Men's Doubles 6 - 3, 6 - 2.

THE Club Championships in all Bowls Clubs should be considered the most important competition of the year and at Javea Green it is taken ver y seriously by the members judging from the number of entries across all the disciplines available to play in.

These range from Rinks (four players/team); Triples; Gents, Ladies and Mixed

Important club event in full swing

BUSY SEASON: Almost half way through the 200 matches to be played before March 2019.

Pairs and the ever popular Drawn Aussie Pairs where there is a random draw for your playing partner. There are also the Gents and Ladies Singles, Mixed Singles, Veteran Singles for the senior players over a ‘certain’ age and lastly a Novices Singles for the newer, inexperienced members.

The great thing about Club Championships is that it

gives the ‘newer’ bowlers the oppor tunity to create some upsets and this year has been no exception; naming no names to spare the blushes of those experienced bowlers who have fallen by the wayside.

Between the beginning of October through to the Finals mid-March over 200 matches have to be fitted in, and to date 90 have been

completed. Banco Sabadell is sponsoring the 2018/19 Javea Green Club Championships by providing the full cost of the 40 engraved Trophies to be presented in March. The Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Banco Sabadell for their very generous support.

On Tuesday, November 13 they were delighted to welcome Steven Uyttenhove,

manager of both Teulada and Benitachell branches, who met with competitors and other club members present on the day.

Steven wished all the players good luck in their endeavours, and was able to stay and watch some of the matches as well as taking time out to offer advice and information on the services offered by Banco Sabadell.
