SHRINKING: Laboratory staff reducing to ‘worrying’ levels.

INCE the r unning of the labor ator y services in Denia Hospital was awar ded to an outside company back in 2012, cuts in the wor kforce have reached a worr y i n g ex t e n t a f t e r s l ow l y shrinking and is now affe c t i n g t h e s e r v i c e b e i n g offered.

And even w hen a new company, Analiza SA, took ov e r o n l y a y e a r a g o t h e c u t s c o n t i n u e d t o t h e ex tent there are only 28 emp l oye d ; t h i s c o m p a r e s t o 51 in Gandia Hospital and 44 in the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa.

According to repor ts in the Spanish media, there

have been concer ns at the standar d of ser vice being of fer ed by the labor ator y, and these have come from both patients and medical staff.

A l l e g e d l y, s a m p l e s a r e being lost and delays oc-

cur ring, all of which leads to increased stress levels.

In addition, it’s understood that much of the laborator y equipment in Denia has become obsolete without any intention to modernise it.

A brighter Denia DENIA Council has decided to invest more money in this year’s Christmas lights and at the same time spread them around to more parts of the municipality.

The company, who won the tender with a budget of €29,500 will also include all the light displays for the annual fiesta and the Moors and Christians events.

The council plans to

install decorations in the trees along Explanada Cer vantes, Avenida de València, Calle Loreto and Plazas Valgamediós, Cholet, Jaume I and Benidorm, as well as fully-lit arches on Calles Diana, Cop, Magallanes, Carlos Sentí, Colón, Sagunt, and Patricio Ferrándiz among others.

The Denia illuminations will be on from December 6 until January 6.

Burns victim raises alarm A 36-YEAR-OLD British resident suffering from severe burns to his hands still managed to aler t his neighbours to a fire which broke out in his Javea apartment.

They managed to escape, but an-

other 39-year-old woman was tr a pped on the top floor of the building before being rescued by Denia firefighters.

T he man was injured when he tried to extinguish the fire himself,

and he was later transferred to a local health centre.

According to reports, the fire has badly bur ned the home where it started and a section of the building’s staircase has been affected.

Dogs found in poor state

A

LARGE number of dogs have been rescued and taken into care after they were discovered to be par t of an alleged illegal animal breeding operation in Alicante.

A total of 56 dogs - many of which were discovered to

be blind, with tumours and had suffe r e d v a r i o u s a m putations - are now being looked after by the authorities, but new homes are being sought for them.

T he 56-year-old female owner of the apar tment where the dogs w e r e ke p t i n a p palling conditions, was arrested.

At the same time, the authorities are trying to determine if the home was being used as an ille gal br eeding establishment, as when the woman was ar rested and t h e d o g s we r e b e ing rounded up, s h e a s ke d t h e p o l i c e n o t t o t a ke some of the puppies as ‘they had already been

sold.’

The vet at the Animal Shelter where the dogs were taken, Pablo Sentana Gadea, said: “They are malnourished, are full of par asites, have tumours, long claws, and some showing signs that they’ve never seen sunlight. Five of them are also pregnant.”

Heavy rain wakes up the Costas STORMS that woke a large number of people during the early hours of Thursday left significant levels of rain across much of the Alicante Province.

Weather stations in Calpe, Denia, Elche, Javea, Orihuela and much of the Marina Alta region recorded rainfall of more than 20 litres per m2 when it fell between 7am and 9am.

In addition, Alicante Province also experienced 346 lightning strikes that accounted for 80

per cent of those recorded across the country during the night / early morning.

The heavy rain caused monumental traffic jams in all access roads to Alicante, and particularly affected the A-70 access to the University of Alicante.

Despite a lull during yesterday (Thursday) mor ning, the souther n par t of Valencia Province was on red alert, and the northern Costa Blanca in Alicante Province was put on

orange.

However, despite conditions the 112 emergency service repor ted the Guardia Civil and the fire brigade were only deployed to rescue a vehicle trapped on Carril de Palma in Gandia.

The forecast from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) said there was a chance of the raining continuing today (Friday) until brightening Saturday.

SINCE the be ginning of this month the British Consulate in Alicante has been running a series of events for UK nationals on Living in Spain and Brexit, where British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris and her team have updated residents with the latest information on Brexit and what this means for UK nationals living in Spain.

Last week almost 1,000 people attended the six events, having their questions answered on topics including r esidency, healthcare and tax.

A 39-YEAR-OLD Russian national was arrested at the end of October in connection with alleged ill-treatment of a family member.

The woman was detained when she voluntarily attended the police station in Denia two days after her seven-year-old daughter had told them that her mother had slapped her in the face, insulted her and had thrown an iron on the floor in anger.

Robbers caught NATIONAL POLICE officers in Benidorm have arrested two men - aged 36 and 43 in connection with robberies with force in October.

They forced the doors and windows and stole around €5,000 from the gaming machines in the premises. One of those arrested.

Laundry gas blues FIFTY people were evacuated in San Vicente del Raspeig after a leak of butane gas was discovered in a laundry.

The incident happened in Calle Doctor Fleming and when they arrived at the scene, firefighters removed five cylinders from inside the building.

Premises close to the laundry were asked to quickly leave their homes. The area was cordoned off for just around an hour.

Cat saved in Benidorm blaze AROUND 30 people were evacuated from a fivestorey building in Benidorm after fire broke out in one of the flats.

According to reports, the fire started in the kitchen of an apartment on the third floor of the block on Calle Apolo XI, and the fire brigade arrived in minutes.

Local Police had already cleared the block although they suspected a woman was still inside. However, only a cat was found and taken to safety.

Finestrat forest fire FIREFIGHTERS from Benidorm were called to put out a forest fire close to the urban centre of Finestrat. The blaze broke out just after 1pm on Sunday and was declared under control at 5.25pm.

According to reports, a number of sheds were destroyed in the fire which was extinguished before it had chance to reach any homes in the area.

The cause of the fire is unknown, which needed two fire engines, three aircraft, and a helicopter to attend.

Spending to save TEULADA-MORAIRA Council has announced a series of energy saving measures that will initially cost €130,000.

The project, which sees all the electrics replaced including the lighting system throughout the municipal buildings has been subsidised by the Alicante Provincial Council and is par t of the 2016 Energy Saving Plan.

To date, there are 133 municipalities across the Alicante Province that, like Te u l a d a - M o r a i r a , have joined the initiative to reduce their energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 per cent before 2020.

Live animal ban for market ONE of the conditions for the retur n of the Medieval Market to the old town of Denia was live animals being prohibited from taking part.

This is consistent with other decisions which also stopped animals being used in any circus that visits the municipality. However, in the case of the Medieval Market security has also been a consideration. This follows an incident when two camels escaped and fled through the streets in 2015 and injured two people; one of whom was a young girl who was bitten and another suffered a broken leg.

Another scabies case reported

AS reported in last week’s RTN the outbreak of scabies at the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa has been controlled... but another case has now been reported in Altea.

The town hall immediately contacted the Marina Baja Health authority and put established protocols in place to stop the spread of the disease. In addition, the lo-

cal people’s minds were put at rest, mainly thanks to the quick action of the mother of a young girl who belongs to the local rhythmic gymnastics team. She informed the town hall as soon as her daughter’s condition was confirmed.

Councillor Pere Barberr said teachers and others at the girl’s school were advised to take the necessary preventative

measures. At this stage, it’s not known if the girl contracted the disease as a result of the original outbreak in Villajoyosa where four patients and 25 members of staff had been affected.

“This is not a serious illness,” Altea’s Health councillor Diego Martinez said. “It is easily treated and there is no need for social alarm.”

Petition against parking clampdown THE recently introduced system of restricting parking in the old town and port area of Javea to no more than an hour, has not been well received.

A total of 732 people have signed a petition, handed in to the town hall, expressing their ‘total disagreement’ with the time restrictions on Avenida Jaume I and Plaza Adolfo Suarez. Local Police have kept strict control of the area which sees many drivers writing the time they park on a piece of paper. The fine for exceeding the limit is €80, €50 if paid within a set time.

SAN JUAN de Alicante is a municipality with more than 23,000 inhabitants, and yet over the weekend there is only one Local Police officer on patrol due to the lack of staff numbers.

According to the Provincial Secretariat of the Professional Union of Local Police and Firefighters (SPPLB), there was only one policeman on duty in the police station in San Juan, and another out and about on patrol, which ‘puts the security of both the police and local people at risk.’

According to reports, this is due to the police being frustrated at the lack of numbers, and they’ve also stopped doing overtime.

IN an effort to encourage local people to drink tap water, Javea Council has distributed 2,000 glass bottles. Under the campaign of ‘more tap and less plastic,’ the council - in conjunction with water company Amjasa - is trying to promote drinking treated sea water via a desalination plant - is perfectly safe, as well as cheaper and more environmentally friendly. But there are still a number who have reservations.

The next stage in the campaign is to try to involve local bars, cafes and restaurants to provide free tap water to their customers, but only if they bring with them a specially labelled bottle.

Market works PLANS for the new municipal market in Muchamiel, which will be built on the site of the old El Salvador School, are about to take a step forward after months of delay. The awarding of a new contract for the project is now imminent.

This next phase, which must be carried out before the end of the year, will see a budget of more than €1.1 million awarded to the successful company of which 75 per cent will be covered by the Alicante Provincial Council.

Agriculture moves into town A

ROUND 50 members of Vall de Pop U3A set off to the All Saints Fair (Feria de todos los Santos) in Cocentaina; a fair that has been running every year since 1346.

Essentially an agricultural fair, with an area filled with tractors, lorries and farming equipment in the town squares, and in the myriad of narrow streets, there were hundreds of stallholders and entertainers providing a medieval market, an Arab souk, and traditional music and dancing shows.

A 55-YEAR-OLD British man died on the beach of Els Testos in Benitachell.

According to reports, the man had gone with a friend for a swim and t o g o s n o r ke l l i n g i n the sea off a par t of the beach which is only accessible by a path.

W hile the pair were in the water, his companion lost sight of his friend and the alar m was raised when he didn’t surface and then failed to retur n to the beach.

Maritime Rescue Officers who had gone to the scene later found the lifeless body of the man floating in the sea in the darkness.

A L I C A N T E - E LC H E Air por t passenger numbers are flying high once again following a 5.5 per cent growth for the month of October.

Figures released by airport managers AENA show the terminals handled 1,349,587 passenger s during the month, still classed as high season, and an incr ease compar ed to the same time last year.

Despite worr ying dips during July, August and September, it was British tourists w hich saved the day, accounting for 549,101 passengers in October.

The growth in inter nal tr aveller s stands out with an increase of 15.4 per cent compared with 2017, although it’s international tourism which has helped boost the monthl y r etur ns once again.

JAVEA U3A members enjoyed a day trip to Alicante to see Van Gogh Alive - the Experience, a unique multi-media show featuring the work of the celebrated artist.

Members were blessed with beautiful weather and were also able to shop, visit the castle, the impressive indoor market, or just enjoy

some shopping, eating and drinking.

The coach trip was led by Travel Team member Barbara Gorrod.

The Javea U3A Travel Team organise several outings during the year ; only this week they ran a coach trip to Valencia City centre with another one planned for November 21.

LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics.

While there are new rules for British nationals applying for residency in Spain, there will be no change to the right and status of EU nationals living in the UK, nor UK nationals living in the EU, while the UK remains in the EU. As an EU citizen it is now mandatory to register as a resident if you intend on living in Spain for more than three months.

You must register in person at the Oficina de Extranjeros (immigration office) - visit: http://www.seat.mpr.gob.es/portal/servicios/extranjeria/extranje ria_ddgg.html for regional offices - or a designated police station, which you can find at: https://www.policia.es/documentacion/ oficinas/oficinas_extran.html You must make an appointment online before going to your local office or station, which can be done on the Spanish public administration website: https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/ icpplus/index.html When making your appointment you must select the province where you live and then the option ‘certificados UE’ and follow the instructions.

You take the following documents with you to your appointment: Passport or other identity document (not expired) Official form (EX-18), two copies, filled and signed by the UE national.

In addition, you will need other documents, depending on your situation: • (employed) - contract of employment or other proof of your employment status.

• (self-employed) - proof of registration in the register of economic activities or other proof of your employment status.

• (not employment in Spain) - Proof of: health cover valid in Spain; sufficient means to support yourself and your family.

• (pensioners) - provide proof of public health cover.

• (students) - proof of your registration in an educational establishment; proof of public or private health cover; formal declaration that you have sufficient means to support yourself during your stay.

You will be issued with a credit-card sized residence certificate which will include your name, address, nationality, NIE number, and date of registration.

The old A4 residence certificates are still valid, and you do not need to apply for a credit-card sized alternative unless your circumstances change, for example you move house. But you can if you want to, at any time.

After five years of being registered as a resident, you can apply for a certificate of permanent residence in Spain. The card will be similar, but state that you are a ‘residente permanente.’

Local athlete earns his praise

NE of Javea’s local athletes has recently been the subj e c t o f a wo n d e r f u l tribute by councillor for Spor t, V icent Colomer, held in the town hall.

Mohamed Rida Yo u n e s M o h a w a s the world sub-champion in the over-35’s 1,500m race when it took place in Malaga in September “You have won r espect as a spor tsman and for being a good person, publicspirited and committed to your town,” said Councillor Colomer.

This has been a g o o d ye a r fo r M o h a “who takes the name of Javea w her ever he goes,” Colomer continued, wishing the spor tsman the necessar y str ength and ener g y for his new challenges.

Moha’s trainer Fr ank Beneyto also drew attention to his wor th as a per son and as a sportsman.

“He always has a s m i l e - n eve r a b a d wor d - for ever ybody,” Beneyto said.

Communication history

THE Casa del Cable in Javea has been restored to its former glory, and a new generation can now see the history of communications between the Spanish mainland and the Balearics. The building, which now contains many artefacts and pieces of telegraphy equipment from a bygone age again, was once the base for the first cable installed on September 7, 1860. This was only two years after the first transatlantic cable connecting Europe with the USA (specifically Ireland and Newfoundland).

The exhibits include large batteries used to power the telegraph building as well as the braided wires used as in the 111kms of connection.

English teacher honoured

by Javea town mayor JOSE CHULVI, the mayor of Javea, was proud to honour the work of a Creama volunteer English teacher, Trish Barr, in a small ceremony held in the town hall.

Trish, who lives in Javea, has been wor king for Creama (the unemployment of fice) for the past five year s teaching unemployed people English with the aim of giving them a better chance of finding work. However, Trish and her husband Jonathan have taken the decision to return to the UK after living in Spain for 15 years to make a new life for themselves and re-

The Voluntary English Teaching Group has been together for near ly eight year s, teaching hundreds of students of all nationalities. Trish said: “The students benefit enormously from the lessons, but the teachers also benefit, making new friends, improving their Spanish and increasing the integration and tolerance of our multi cultural town. So everybody wins.”

Getting into Xmas spirit THE Cancer Care Charity Centre is getting into the Christmas spirit and starting festivities on Saturday, December 1, 11.30am to 2pm.

Go along and join in some traditional Christmas Carols sung by the Costa Blanca Male Voice Choir, and there’ll be no excuses about not joining in as song sheets will be distributed.

Santa Claus will be there for the children (and the young at heart) and you can also enjoy a free mince pie and a coffee courtesy of Cancer Care.

Guardia save choking customer THREE members of the Guardia Civil have saved the life of a 52year-old man who was choking in a bar in Javea.

The incident happened shortly before 10pm on Monday evening when the Italian national suddenly fell unconscious.

He was with two friends who beat him on the back to try to revive him after he suffered a major coughing fit which indicated he had choked on something.

The 112 emergency number was called while others ran to the nearby Guardia Civil barracks to ask for help, which was answered by the three officers.

According to repor ts, the emergency SAMU ambulance took 20 minutes to arrive at the scene and it was therefore thanks to the quick reaction by the officers that the man’s life was saved after administering the famous Heimlich manoeuvre to clear his airway.

They then performed CPR and the man started breathing again.

He was then taken to hospital.

UNUSUAL: Two Lodges have merged and unveiled their new banner.

Rare Masonic ceremony

THE Freemasons of Arenal Depor tiva Lodge recently held a Banner Dedication Ceremony in their Lodge in Javea. This is quite an unusual ceremony as it is usually only held when a new Lodge is created.

The reason for Arenal Deportiva holding one is because two years ago the two Lodges, Arenal and Deportiva decided to merge into one. For this reason, a new banner was thought necessary showing details of both Lodges.

The ceremony was presented by the Provincial Grand Master of Valencia RWBro Michael Shilan and many Masons attended to see a ceremony which many had never seen before. The Provincial Grand Master arrived in full splendour with his escort, consisting of the Provincial Grand Director

of Ceremonies, the Provincial Grand Standard Bearer, the Provincial Grand Sword Bearer, the Provincial Grand Chaplain and six Provincial Grand Stewards.

The Provincial Grand Chaplain made a short presentation on the use of banners generally and of Masonic banners in particular. WBro Brian Imber, who designed the new banner, then gave a short speech explaining the symbolism and meaning of the various details on the banner.

It was fitting that the previous Provincial Grand Master RWBro Norman Wheatley was at the ceremony as he had conducted the Ceremony of Amalgamation two years previously. This was a splendid and unusual ceremony which all present enjoyed enormously.

Big bang ends fiestas ONE of the largest explosions ever heard in the municipality rounded off another successful year of fiestas in Benidorm.

Around 100 kilos of gunpowder was believed to have been used in the final spectacular in Avenida Jaime I dedicated to supporters of the various organisations that put together the fiestas who have passed away over the years.

As the wick was lit to set off the bombs and bangers, they chanted the well-known phrase ‘Senyor pirotécnic, pot començar la mascletà’ (Fireworks, Lord, start the display), although a minute’s silence was held in honour of the departed beforehand.

Outlaw ‘cures’ that endanger wildlife by Barry Duke

BACK in the 1980’s I was put on an NHS waiting list fo r s u r g e r y t o t r e at t e n donitis. It is a condition characterised by irritation a n d i n f l a m m at i o n o f t h e tendons around the wrist joint. In my case, it badly affected my left hand.

But just a few weeks before the scheduled operation, a friend advised me to try acupuncture. He swore it would cure me, and gave me the number of a practitioner.

I was sceptical, as I have always re gar ded alter nat i ve m e d i c a l t r e at m e n t s with utmost suspicion.

However, curiosity won the day and I had two sessions with the acupuncturist. T he pain went away

and has never troubled me since.

W h at g o t m e t h i n k i n g again about traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) was a repor t I heard on BBC Rad i o 4 r e c e n t l y, a b o u t t h e immense damage being done to animal species by the demand in China for animal parts believed to cure a l l k n ow n m a l a d i e s , a n d 'devil possession'.

I’d never heard of a creature called a pangolin until that report. Pangolins are a form of scaly anteater, and their scales - made of kerat i n - a r e b e l i eve d t o e n hance kidney function and cure asthma and psoriasis.

Near l y one million pangolins have been poached in the past 10 years.

At this rate, according to the One Green Planet blog: “This little scaly creature may be poached into oblivi o n b e fo r e m o s t o f t h e wor ld is even awar e they exist.”

millions to around 50,000, and the slaughter continues relentlessly.

If this weren’t depressing enough, the BBC repor ted at the end of October that the Chinese government is now allowing the import of p owd e r e d fo r m s o f r h i n o hor n and bones from dead t i g e r s , w h i ch c o u l d b e used in ‘qualified hospitals by qualified doctors.’

That’s probably the most stupid thing I’ve read since

E-Bikers on the right track

THE Javea U3A E-Bike group held its second ride in early November, on what turned out to be a lovely day for riding.

The group has already attracted a total of 18 members, seven of which joined the outing at Jesus Pobre.

Group leader Philip Gauron welcomed Harry, Bob, Graham, Bill, Sue and Terry who cycled to Denia. One of the group’s objectives is to ride on minor roads and cycle tracks where possible, and this ride achieved this.

Pobre, riders took a winding route through small lanes, following the railway track before crossing onto the CV-735 towards their first refreshment stop.

After reaching Denia and enjoying the sights, the group returned to Jesus Pobre via an alternative route and enjoyed a light lunch and drinks.

Everybody enjoyed the ride, having covered 30km.

THREE international choirs led by conductor/pianist Guy Verhelst will be giving a benefit concert in the Auditorium de la Mediterrania at La Nucia on Friday November 23.

This concert, which is full of surprises will be further enhanced with performances by Hazel Hiles’ dance group and the Duo Pasión Doble. The entire proceeds will go to the Food Bank of La Nucia. Together the choirs, Canticorum of Alfaz, Cantares of La Nucia and Alegrìa of Moraira, guarantee an impressive musical and spectacular evening, accompanied by the piano and cello. Their repetoire is international, with songs in Italian, English, Russian, Latin and Spanish. Pupils from the well-known dance school of Hazel Hiles of La Nucia will dance to a number of songs.

And while negotiating the winding bends the big cats began to resemble a multi-coloured s n a ke t a k i n g t h e bends with ease until the cof fee bar stop came into view.

T he cats wer e then lined up w hile their proud owner s enjoyed some refreshments and a photo shoot.

tion was Caseta Nova in the Ibi countryside, and after a superb lunch 16 members stayed over to enable them t o f u l l y e n j oy n i g h t out on the town, which was followed by a trip to the toy museum after a hearty breakfast.

RESTRICTIONS: New crematoriums must be more than 200 metres from homes.

New crematorium laws proposed

N

EW crematoriums which are built across the Valencian Community must be more than 200 metres away from homes and public spaces, such as schools, playgrounds or sports facilities. Ideally, they should be on industrial land.

These are the main recommendations of a series of proposals being made by the Ministry of Health to review and update requirements for the location of such facilities.

It’s the first time that such measures have been adopted by the Health authorities regarding crematoriums that have previously been left in the hands of the local councils to decide. In the case of Alicante, their local by-laws were

changed to impose a minimum limit of 500 metres and local politicians are now saying that the new distances are ‘a little restrictive’ and leaves the door wide open to companies building even closer to homes.

The new measures also include other aspects aimed at reducing the harmful effects on the environment, such as removing any iron or metal or plastic ornaments from coffins. In addition, cadavers will not be permitted to wear clothes or beads containing anything metallic.

Finally, the Ministr y of Health will also prohibit people with morbid obesity from being cremated since higher levels of fuel ar e needed to carr y out the process which exceeds the permitted limits.

Local Writing Group launches book of short stories THE Moraira-Teulada U3A was for med in 2008 and, shortly after its inauguration, various groups were organised including the Creative Writing Group.

The cur rent members of the Writing Group felt they wanted to celebrate their 10th anniversary by putting together a memento of some of their stories which could be sold to raise funds for their

chosen charity. The theme throughout the book, after a great deal of discussion, is ‘Lucky Escapes.’

Now, after months of writing, revising, planning, proofreading and designing, under the guidance of the Group Leader Dot Garrett, the book has been published, much to the enor mous delight of everyone involved. It is available via Ama-

zon as a paperback or on Kindle, and all profits will go to the Raise a Smile charity which is the Moraira-Teulada U3A charity for 2018.

The launch of ‘Lucky Escapes’ will take place at Letters-R-Us, in Moraira, on Monday from 10.30am, and the authors look forward to welcoming as many people as possible to enjoy complimentary cava and cakes.

THE next presentation by the Marina Alta Arts Society features the work of JMW Turner. Late Turner

by Nicola Moorby will be held at the Salones Canor Teulada, with the doors opening at 10am.

British ar tist J M W Tur ner (1775–1851) is one of the greatest artists Britain has ever produced.

He painted unforgettable watercolour s and was revered for his masterly use of shifting light and dramatic cloudscapes. These are especially highly regarded.

Turner is often thought of as the great artistic traveller of his age, wandering around Britain and Europe in search of inspiring landscape scenery. Yet one of his most enduring subjects was found on his doorstep in his native city of London. The Thames became one of Turner's most frequently depicted subjects and by the end of his life had inspired some of his most innovative and celebrated works.

Nicola Moorby is a cur ator at Tate Britain, with extensive experience of lecturing to a wide variety of audiences, and is also a freelance art historian specialising in British ar t of the 19th and ear ly 20th century.

She studied at the University of York and Birkbeck College, London,

Tourist boost

ALTEA’s Department of Tourism, headed by Councillor Anna Alvado, has announced that during the month of October the hotel occupancy in the municipality stood at 78 per cent.

For the first fortnight, the level was 82.35 per cent - similar figures to the same time last year - and were part of data provided by the hotels based in Altea and the HOSBEC association.

The Tourist Information office attended to a total of 2,348 people also similar to October 2017 - with 69 per cent being foreign visitors and the remainder Spanish nationals.

As with most tourist figures, the majority of the visitors came from the UK with 31.5 per cent, and significantly up on last year when the level was 24.7 per cent.

Similar tours are also taking place during the remainder of November and into December.

“We not only appreciate the numbers, it’s also good that many come to our municipality to enjoy our cuisine and culture.”

Intensive police training LO C A L PO LIC E, N ati onal Pol i ce and Guardia Civil in Altea have taken part in an intensive tr aining day aimed at increasing their safety and security during their day-to-day duties.

The course, lasting five hours, included talks about how to defend themselves in the event of attacks on them and included demonstrations from Manuel Navarro and Benjamin Garcia.

Councillor Vicente Ripoll said: “T his personal defence course is part of the annual training plan for Local Police officers and the third time such a day has been held. Altea Council is making an effort to keep the officers on top of measures and techniques that will improve the security for everyone.”

The last of these special training days is scheduled for November 30.

Calpe pays off its debt CALPE Council has approved a series of measures that will mean they can now pay off the remaining debt they have with the bank.

The total of €3,360,483 will come from the surplus that resulted from the 2017 budget , and w ill mean the reorganisation of the municipal accounts as five of the loans taken out by the council are settled in full. However, not everyone in the council was happy - especially the PSOE

and Compromis representatives - who said that rather than allocate the amount to paying off loans, the money should instead be invested in local improvements or essential services.

At the same meeting, modifications of a number of diff e r e n t l o c a l tax e s w e r e discussed, as well as the notice that must be given for the private use of a public road.

That has been increased from eight days to 10.

Future business people trained

TOTAL of 34 young people (14 from Calpe, along with 11 from Benissa and nine from Teulada) have been selected from more than 400 to be par t of the School of Young Entrepreneurs of the Marina Alta.

This initiative has been possible thanks to the coordination of the youth councils of the three municipali-

ties, and has allowed the holding of several workshops in the IES Josep Iborra, IES Ifach and IES Teulada.

During these courses, the young people between 14 and 20 years old - have lear ned the importance of having an entrepreneurial attitude and a business acumen as a way of achieving both professional success and

personal happiness.

The School of Young Entrepreneurs begins today (Friday) and will continue until the end of Februar y. In this first session, students will lear n to understand the challenges that an entrepreneur faces and give them the skills to deal with them, as well as learning to work as a team, speak in public and to gain self-confidence.

LOCAL POLICE based in Albatera have successfully finished an operation aimed at preventing a series of thefts of pomegranates in the area.

This is carried out each year during the harvest period of this particular fruit, and this year it’s been noticed that there has been a noticeable fall in robberies from the orchards. Only one person has been arrested compared to eight people last year.

Attack men sought BOTH the Guardia Civil and the Local Police have started an investigation to find three men in connection with an alleged rape in San Javier.

According to reports, the woman was attacked in the early hours of Saturday morning in Calle Maestre.

She was found by the Local Police roaming in the middle of the road in a state of shock and confusion. She then told them that she’d been having drinks with some friends in a nearby bar and that on the way home she’d been assaulted by the three who tried to strip her naked.

She was unable to provide a description of the men, and police are asking for witnesses to the incident to come forward.

SHOPS and businesses in Torrevieja will be one week ahead of the rest when it comes to the famous Black Friday.

Mor e than 65 establishments across the municipality have indicated that they will be offering discounts both today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday).

After the success of Black Friday last year, and having consulted with those that took part, it was decided to bring the event forward by one week.

LOCALS and councils in the Marbella area have rallied round a young Spanish woman who continues to recover in hospital after losing four of her limbs to septicaemia.

Members of the Marbella Local Police Association said they have donated €1,000 to Sarah Almagro Vallejo.

They added they would also sell 1,000 bracelets to help raise additional funds for her. Marbella, Estepona and other towns have also organised fundraising events for her.

An expatriate friend of Sarah’s family told RTN that she is getting better but has fought off pneumonia while recovering.

She has been in and out of the Costa del Sol Hospital’s intensive care unit as a result, the family friend added.

Sarah’s friends and family rallied ar ound her after she contracted septicaemia in July. The bacterial blood infection almost took her life.

Sarah, 18, from Marbella, said she began vomiting on the night of July 23 and felt as though she was coming down with a fever.

She went first to a health centre before being taken to the emergency ward at Costa del Sol hospital.

Sarah spent 10 days in a coma and underwent several operations including amputations and dialysis treatment.

Sar ah’s famil y said she is a keen sportswoman and a natural athlete. Her favourite spor t is surfing.

FRIDAY November 23 is Black Friday, and then the following Monday is Cyber Monday when supposedly many stores both online and in towns reduce prices to stimulate trade.

Like many other marketing trends, this one star ted in the USA. It became popular in the early 2,000’s as the day after Thanksgiving, when people star t to think about their Christmas shopping, as many take the day off following the T hur sday holiday.

I t i s s u g g e s t e d t h at the phrase Black Friday originated in Philadelphia due to the volume of pedestrian and vehicl e t r a f f i c w h i ch o c curred on that day, and it has since been adopted all over the world.

Another suggestion is that it is the day when retail stores start going into profit for the year,

New banking law for mortgages THERE have been many cases where people who have taken mortgages in Spain, feel that they have been misled with regards to charges and even the law has been open to interpretation.

Now, the political parties in Congress have agreed in principle that the Banks should be responsible for all costs including those of a notary with regards to mortgages except for the cost of the appraisal of the property.

In addition, notaries themselves will be required (at no cost to the borrower) to complete a questionnaire to ensure that the bor rower fully under stands all the clauses contained in the mortgage contract.

Effectively this means the Banks will have to pay all of the tax costs involved in the completion of mortgage documentation rather than the borrower, and this could be law by early 2019.

W hilst this is positive news for homeowners, there are still a large number of matters, including the cost of early settlement of any mortgage, interest on late payments and seizure of property, all of which have to be settled in future debates.

Guadalupe - the Royal Monastery at the heart of Spanish history

SET in the heart of the region of Extremadura about an hour’s drive from the historic Renaissance town of Caceres, the pretty village of Guadalupe is a remarkable destination in its own right.

While its cobbled streets are lined with striking buildings that show the evidence of many centuries of history, the reason people come from far and wide is to see the magnificent building right at its centre - the Sanctuary-Monastery of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Founded by King Alfonso XI of Castille in the 14th century, it is a

truly exceptional edifice that has been added to and lavishly embellished down the years. In fact it is regarded so highly that it has been named as a UN World Heritage Site.

It became Spain’s Royal Monaster y, where the great and good gathered amidst some of the most magnificent religious art and exquisite gold, and silverware.

This was not simply a religious house, for it was at the hear t of power. It was here that the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella and Ferdinand, granted Christopher Columbus an audience

Exceptional blend Architecturally, it is

an exceptional blend of differing styles. The 14th-15th centur y Mudejar church and cloister is particularly fine, with its intricate

façade setting a striking tone.

The interior nave and two side aisles are notable for their fine vaulting and feature richly ornamented altars and tombs.

The sacristy is renowned for a series of paintings by Zurbarán and magnificent wall paintings that seem to leap out from the plain canvas of the architecture itself. It was built between 1638 and 1647 and provides a contrast to the earlier periods.

Moving through the sacristy the Chapel of Santa Catalina of Alejandria is home to some imposing tombs

that date to the 17th centur y. It is also packed with reliquaries and exquisite works of art.

Entering into the Camarin de la Vigen you will find an octagonal room decorated in baroque style. Head up the stairs and the star of the show awaits Guadalupe’s famous black Madonna.

Here a monk takes over from the usual guide to present the statue to and bless visitors.

The statuette is richly clothed and in her arms holds a baby Jesus - also black.

by Sandy Shore WITH some amusement, I recall our ship rolling to the ocean wave and the tilting mess room table emptying our breakfasts on the deck.

Despite water lapping around our ankles we were a good humoured bunch. Such upsets were treated as storms in a teacup, which of course they were. More recently, before the break of dawn, I reached for my bedside glass and a little drink was spilled. Oh, the counterblast from my awakened wife was a sight to be heard.

What followed was a stream of oaths that would have brought a blush to a sailor’s face; toxic invective accompanied the mopping up process.

Now you know why women are not welcome as sailors. Forget the nonsense about their presence on a vessel being a bad omen. Such socalled superstition was a r use dreamed up by a Jack Tar who, having suffered his wife’s hysteria over a glass of spilled milk put that rumour around.

Wives often complain that they

HAPPINESS: Does true bliss lie in marriage or in singledom? are not loved enough. The usual mantra is, ‘you never say you love me any more’ or ‘you don’t cuddle me like you used to do.’

Well, perhaps if women were more cuddlesome they might be. I recall a friend who as a husband

ticked every box. Yet, he was often left desolate by his being treated like he was something his spouse had discovered on the sole of her shoe. Later, he did find solace in a girlfriend and of course that too was his fault.

A wife, being human, will occasionally err. She forgets things and on occasion either loses utensils or breaks objects d’art. The husband’s response is usually, ‘It’s alright, love. It is har dly the end of the world.’

But, it is the end of the world if we do it and the minor sin will stigmatise our characters for evermore and a day.

On occasion, our friends drive whilst we two take a backseat. The seatbelts are on and the scold’s tongue is trussed too and during the drive there isn’t a word of instruction or criticism uttered. This is when I think to myself, ‘Would my driving friend enjoy such peace if he instead of me was married to my wife?’ I very much doubt it.

Dar n! I should have taken my dad’s belated advice: ‘Son, why get married and make one woman unhappy when you can stay single and make them all happy.’

To all those henpecked husbands out there, ‘cheer up, mate’; you’re not on your own by a long whisky shot. Grin and bear it until you’re the one whom she bears - with five other good men and true.

Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE seem to be having quite a good run on the ‘little words’ which students have told me over the years are what trouble them most. To be honest, some of the little words in Spanish don’t even bear thinking about, and we have had a glimpse of those with our direct and indirect pronouns, but there are others that are really quite friendly.

As far as I remember we haven’t looked ver y much at possessive adjectives so that is our mission for today. We have seen before that adjectives are words that describe - such as, big, green, interesting. So we can say: ‘The big book’, ‘the green book’, ‘the interesting book’. We can also describe something in terms of who it belongs to - ‘my book’.

Therefore the word ‘my’ has the same function as ‘big’, ‘green’ or ‘interesting’ and is called a ‘possessive adjective’. In English these words do not change, so I would say ‘my book’ or ‘my books’.

However, in Spanish as we know, adjectives change to agree in num-

THEORETICALLY, when we reach a certain age our sense of adventure wanes, and there is nothing much to look forward to each week, other than a visit to the Kashmir Palace or a day out in Cartagena.

We are supposed to surrender to the inevitability of a burgeoning waist line (or relaxed muscle as some prefer to call it), and clothing should reflect our advancing years.

‘You should dress your age and get your hair cut’, are two remarks I am familiar with.

Although I have to say, that I smile w henever I see a fellow wrinkl y cr eeping along with a walking stick and wearing tracksuit bottoms and running shoes.

But life is not a theory. Whether a ged 25 or 75, our existence is equally valid and there is no reason why we Golden Agers should not still have ambitions and dreams for the future.

Possessive adjectives

ber (singular or plural) and gender (masculine or feminine) with whatever they are describing, and the same thing happens with possessive adjectives.

We also learnt before that some adjectives (those that end in ‘o’ in the masculine singular) make four possible changes, (eg bueno, buena, buenos, buenas) whilst others (those that end in any other letter in the masculine singular) only make two changes - for singular and plural (grande, grandes) With possessive adjectives the

same principle applies, so ‘mi’ (my) can only change to ‘mis’ for the plural. ‘Mi libro’ (my book), ‘mis libros’ (my books).

The same change happens with ‘tu’ (your - singular familiar form) ‘tu libro’ (your book), ‘tus libros’ (your books) and ‘su’ which can mean ‘his’, ‘her’, ‘your’ (usted version) and also ‘their’ and ‘your’ (ustedes version). All those ideas are expressed by ‘su’ or ‘sus’ - with the one change relating to what is possessed (eg one book, or more than one book).

Hopefull y that point is reason-

ably clear, but it is important to realise that these changes wor k completely differently from English, where the changes (eg his, her, their) relate to the person possessing, not what is possessed.

When we come to the words for ‘our’ and ‘your’ (that is ‘your’ when the possessor is in the familiar plural form), we come across two adjectives that end in the letter ‘o’, namely ‘nuestro’ and ‘vuestro’.

Again, following the usual adjective rules, these words can make four changes. Therefore we would say ‘ nuestr o coche’ (our car) ‘nuestra casa’ (our house), ‘nuestros coches’ (our cars) ‘nuestras casas’ (our houses).

Likewise ‘vuestro, vuestra, vuestros and vuestras’ are the four familiar plural possessive adjectives. So, for example, if I was talking to a couple who were friends and saying something about their children, I would refer to them as ‘vuestros hijos’. If this imaginary couple only had daughters and not sons I would say ‘vuestras hijas’. Maybe this makes some sense, but as ever needs plenty of practice!

You’re never too old . . .

ADVENTUROUS: Age should be no barrier. ished directing a production of Calendar Girls, I am wondering what I can find to involve myself with next which will pose a suitable challenge.

If you think that directing a play is not particularly adventurous, let me put it this way.

Having been involved with amateur theatre for over 30 years, this

production was the most ambitious I have had the pleasure of being involved with.

To experience packed houses and see the cast receiving standing ovations from the audience for a job well done, were my best moments in those three-plus decades.

So what’s next? Ironically my biggest lifetime ambition - to give

my daughter away on her wedding day - will never come to pass. That happened many years ago, and I was passed over for someone deemed to be more suitable.

My second - to be best man at a wedding - is har dl y likel y now.

These days I attend more funerals than weddings, and the odds are stacked a gainst any of my divor ced acquaintances getting hitched again.

I was always in the wrong place at the wrong time when my best friends decided to get married in the past.

I’ ve thought that walking the South West Coastal Path in England would be a blast, but stretching through four counties and 630 miles, it would necessitate being away for a few days and the Princess would not like that.

We have always fancied hiring a camper and touring around New Zealand too, but that will depend on the cost.

So I think for now, I shall endeavour to finish the book that lies unfinished in my Word files, and give some serious thought as to what the next adventure will be.

Getting it published perhaps?

motoring ON October 3, the European Parliament voted for draft cuts in carbondioxide (CO2) emissions from new cars of 20 per cent by 2025, and 40 per cent by 2030.

An additional requirement means that by 2030, 35 per cent of all new car sales will be low or zero-emissions vehicles.

As a result, the future of private motoring is looking very different.

Three things are virtually certain: almost all new cars will have some kind of electrical propulsion; motoring will get more expensive; and sports models with large capacity V8 and V12 engines will be consigned to history.

Even with that power going through just the front wheels, the Civic Type R zooms to 60mph from zero in 5.8 seconds.

Although it is only available with a sixspeed annual box, the machined ball alloy gear knob is a joy to use.

Overall, it is not a car that your parents are going to like, but that is surely part of its appeal.

HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR: The stylish Thunderbird suited its famous owner.

A FORD Thunderbird owned by Marilyn Monroe is for sale at auction in Los Angeles next month, when it is estimated that it will sell for €260,000 to €430,000.

She bought the car in 1 9 5 5 , j u s t b e fo r e m a r r y ing playwright Ar thur M i l l e r, a n d h a d i t u n t i l s h o r t l y b e fo r e h e r d e at h in 1962.

A repor t published at the time suggests that the couple dr ove this vehicle to their civil wedding cer emony on June 28, 1956, and probably

also to their private wedding two days later.

The Thunderbird has a 312 cubic-inch (just over 5,000cc) V8 engine prod u c i n g 2 2 5 h o r s e p o w e r, w hich gave a top speed of 113mph.

W ith a two-door roadster body, it was pitched a s Fo r d ’s a n swe r t o t h e Chevr olet Cor vette pr oduced by its rival General Motors.

Its bodywork is finished in Raven Black, with a black and white interior.

The current owner said: “ F i n d i n g t h i s c a r, a classic two-seater model, after 56 year s of its unknown whereabouts, was a singular event.

“No other car has been located and documented as owned by the incomparable Marilyn Monroe.”

He also proved he has the bottle for a battle against the biggest odds after a threemonth injury lay-off wrecked his hopes of breaking into the world’s top 100 professionals this year.

Even after all his problems, Kuhn, 18, could still make the Australian Open qualifiers in January by winning his last two tournaments of the year in India.

Rain and wind reduced the field

OLIVA NOVA was the venue for this week’s get-together of the Marina Alta Golf Society.

In the last two days leading up to the game, the news that the weather was going to be wet and windy resulted in the field being reduced to just 10 hardy members.

On the day, the weather tur ned out to be far from pleasant, but the game did go on in overcast conditions but essentially dry. The weather turned against the players on the back nine with some strong wind and rain.

Results for the day were: 1st - Peter Gar diner (38 points of f 22), 2nd - Denis McVeigh (36 off 19) and 3rd Danny Heron (33 off 18).

Nearest the Pin on Par 3’s: David Downes (Hole 3) and Peter Gardiner (Hole 16).

Two ‘two’s’ scored by: Peter Gardiner (Hole 6) and Denis McVeigh (Hole 16) and both were long chip-in shots off the green.

It would seem that the wet and windy conditions were just what a certain Peter and Denis like playing in, picking up five of the prizes between them.

Buttler four th... all decided on countback. Dave Fotheringham was the unlucky one to miss out with this score, but he did manage to grab the Nearest the Pin (NTP) prize on the fifth hole, his second shot just one metre from the target.

to Shaun O’Gorman with 33, third was David Knight with 30, fourth place was taken

by John Daniels, fifth Mark Gaines, sixth Glynn Braidley, seventh Barbara Pollitt and eighth Peter Gibson.

There were nearest the pin prizes for Shaun O’Gorman, Bob Edwards and two for Dave Knight, with the Warbler Balls going to Bob Edwards and Glynn Braidley.

The semi-final of the singles knock-out between Mark Gaines and Peter Gibson was played on the day and Mark finally overcame Peter on the last hole to move to a final confrontation with Steve Cliffe.

The Society are extremely grateful to Bob and Rosemary Edwards for sponsoring the event and presenting such a large array of prizes.

Definitely a competition to remember.
