Court acquits officers IN a case that dates back 12 years, two members of the Local Police in Torrevieja were acquitted of torture. The pair had been accused of punching and kicking two people they had arrested when in custody, after one of the houses belonging to one of the policemen had suffered from an attempted robbery. During a subsequent court hearing, the policemen insisted the two ‘victims’ had fallen down some stairs.

Police check assault LOCAL POLICE in Elche have arrested a man for assaulting one of their officers during a routine check. According to reports, the incident happened in the early hours of Friday morning when a night patrol were carrying out random alcohol checks on drivers. When one of the tests showed the man to be some way over the permitted limit, he was asked for his documentation. When the police officer’s back was turned, the man kicked him in the back, knocking him to the ground and breaking a finger in the process.

Cold snap shock by Darren Parmenter

OT only did the clocks go back one hour on Sunday morning, temperatures across the Valencian Community also decided to go back too, with people taken by surprise at the cold snap that greeted them as they got up after their extra hour in bed. In fact, Sunday was the coldest October day in 52 years, reaching an average temperature of just 7.9ºC, and the lowest recorded since October 31, 1966 when 7.5ºC was experienced. Before that date, you have to go back to 1950 when the temperature for a day in October was

an average of 6.5ºC. Monday may well have felt even colder than the day before, but this was due to the wind chill factor which saw many local people rushing to get their win-

ter clothes out from the back of the wardrobes. Strong gusts of northerly winds were felt in Jijona (108 kph) and a mere 76 kph in Alicante. At the nearby AlicanteElche Airport, gusts of 59 kph were registered and led to one or two bumpy landings for passengers.

Time to ramp up A DECISION taken at a recent plenary council meeting in Orihuela will mean that all bars, cafes and restaurants that have a terrace leading onto a public road will have to install ramps. This will enable people with reduced mobility and those using wheelchairs to be able to move between the pavement and the road without any issues. The new by-law will be greeted with pleasure by a number of groups and associations which represent disabled people in the area, as it’s something they’ve been requesting for several years. The bars affected by the measure will have 18 months to install the ramps. If they don’t they could see their permit to use the public roads removed.
