ESPITE a summer season that saw the numbers of British tourists to Benidorm showing a slight slowdown, the first two weeks of October have certainly made up for that shortfall.

According to figures released by hotel managers HOSBEC, it’s the first time this year that visitors from the UK have come out of the red when compared to 2017.

Each month, so far, has shown the numbers falling but hotel occupancy rates for the first fortnight of October saw British tourism with a 45 per cent market share, accounting for around 251,000 overnight stays during that time, and remain at the same levels as last year for the month.

Overall for Benidorm, hotel occupancy was 91.3 per cent and was

Christmas Bag Appeal

HRISTMAS is fast approaching, and once again it’s time for the annual Make-a-Smile Christmas Bag Appeal.

This year’s appeal is a little different as they’re no longer asking for toothbrushes, toothpaste, shower gels or shampoos as these are all provided by the new group.

So, if you’re at a loss to know what to buy for this Christmas, what about getting together with a few friends to buy some vouchers?

For example, those from Carrefour can be used for clothes, batteries, treats for a night in or birthday party/pre-

All funds raised go towards educational programmes which prepare many young people for the world after they leave the children’s homes at the age of 18.

Bags of goodies (or vouchers) can be dropped off up at The Bed Centre, Calpe and the Amigos de Make a Smile Charity shop in Teulada up until January 3.

This evening (Friday) there is an organised Halloween Party ‘Panic Halloween’ - starting at 11pm on the municipal football field that combines a ‘Tunnel of Terror’ and a mobile disco.

However, to gain access, children between 14 and 18 years old must carry authorisation signed

Beginning at 7.30pm, prizes will be given to those with the most original costume.

Support for World Polio Day ACCOMPANIED by several colleagues from the Benidorm Council and a delegation from the local Rotary Club, Mayor Toni Perez unveiled a banner from the

balcony of the town hall to commemorate World Polio Day on Wednesday.

World Polio Day was established by Rotary International over a decade ago, to

commemorate the birth of Jonas Salk, who led the first team to develop a vaccine against poliomyelitis.

Thanks to the hard work and initiatives set up by Ro-

tary Clubs all over the world, among others, the disease has been reduced by 99 per cent.

WhatsApp leads to child victims

WO 12-year-old children have come forward to allege a series of abuse by the president of their Alicante football club.

The two children are believed to be the first victims of the 32-year-old man, who was arrested in connection with the allegations, and were contacted by the National Police after an initial analysis of the detained man’s mobile phone.

The children were identified as part of a number of WhatsApp conversations of a sexual nature, and during their subsequent interviews with the police, they testified that they had been abused by the suspect.

According to reports, it is understood that the two children may not be the only ones to have suffered such abuse.

The man was originally detained after he allegedly made a false declaration, where he made no mention of a previous conviction for the possession of child pornography, and abuse of a child under 12 years old.

However, the National Police were suspicious that the declaration was false, and so m e m b e r s o f t h e F a m i l y a n d Wo m e n U n i t (UFAM) were then sent to arrest him.

Betting stopped AN illegal gambling organisation located inside one of Benidorm’s popular pubs, has been dismantled.

According to reports, the Local Police raided the establishment on Saturday afternoon, after seeing someone leaving with a handful of money.

After questioning, they entered and discovered a number of bets on various sporting events taking place at the time. They took away around €1,500 in cash, and five TV screens from the pub in the Rincon de Loix area.

Authorities will decide whether the pub will be formally closed down.

Two hurt in crane fall TWO workers have been injured in Denia when a ‘cherry picker’ crane they were in, fell to the ground.

According to reports, the automatic arm that held the cage containing the men, fell from the third floor as they were working on repairing a

wall on a building on Avenida Joan Fuster.

The two workers were helped at the scene by paramedics, and once stabilised, were taken to hospital by ambulance to continue their treatment.

It is not known at this stage the extent of the injuries they suffered.

‘Shower’ robbers TWO people have been arrested in Denia for breaking into a house... while the owner was having a shower.

They allegedly forced open a door and managed to flee the property with around €1,000 in cash after a struggle with the man who came out of his bathroom after hearing noises.

The two detained Spanish men - aged 26 and 31 - were caught five days after the robbery, following a detailed investigation by the National Police.

by Darren Parmenter A TOTAL of 25 participants from across the world took part in this year’s BASE World Jumping Championship held in Benidorm.

Once again, the event was held at the famous Hotel Gran Bali in the tourist capital, and it was a surprise and a shock to many staying there as they witnessed people ‘falling’ past their rooms in the 166-metre high building.

The event took part over the weekend and the first jump took place at 7am as part of the series of World Championships in the Spanish leg of the competition.

Before Benidorm, similar challenges took place in Ronda (Malaga) and Hox de Jaca (Huesca).

BASE jumping is a form of parachuting or wingsuit flying from a fixed structure or cliff.

VER a period of two years, Benidorm’s Local Police have recommended at least 60 venues to be closed down.

Those affected are mainly pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants with many having issues related to their licences.

In several cases, they never actually had a licence in the first place, having had their applications cancelled or refused.

So far only 14 of the denuncias have been acted upon, while the remainder remain open, whilst seeking a solution to their problems.

Councillor Jose Ramon Gonzalez de Zarate said that they are not seeking to close the business if it can be avoided. “ We w a n t t o m a k e s u r e t h a t everyone has their necessary paperwork as soon as possible to en-

Property boom THERE is a property boom in the Arenal district of Javea, with newbuild properties on the recently completed Brisas del Arenal urbanisation selling for extraordinary amounts.

There are 64 homes, the cheapest apartments with garage costing €265,000.

The three and fourbedroom duplex penthouses are selling for between €420,000 and €495,000, and what makes the prices more remarkable is that they are located on the ‘second line’, not on the beach front.

Grand Lodge at the Grand Bali

HE annual Ladies Night of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia was held last Saturday at the Hotel Grand Bali in Benidorm.

It is one of the most prestigious Masonic gatherings of the year, run under the auspices of the Provincial Grand Master, RWBro Michael Shilan and his lovely wife Muriel,

where Freemasons from all over the province gather together to pay tribute and say thank you to their long-suffering wives.

Throughout the year, most Freemasons attend an enormous number of meetings, and charity functions to raise money for the less privileged and other deserving causes.

The wives have a lot to endure, not seeing their husbands for a sufficient amount of time or being asked to help out at various functions.

Most would agree that without the support of their better halves, they could not do as much, or enjoy their tasks to the same extent.

A superb four-course meal was then served, followed by music from WBro Ian Henry and local group Black Glitter.

Painting exhibition in Pego ART lovers should head to Pego where the Painting for Pleasure Art Group will stage an exhibition from November 5 to 9, from 10am - 1pm, and 5.15pm - 7pm.

It will be held at the Centre d’Exposicions in Carrer d’Hospital, showing work by British and Spanish artists, and there will be greetings cards and prints for sale.

“Everyone is welcome to come to our opening night on November 5,” said Liz Canham, exhibitions secretary. “People can enjoy a glass of wine from 5.15pm - 7pm whilst looking at the diverse ranges.

“There is something for everyone who loves art, from landscapes and portraits to abstract and contemporary work.”

The rain in Spain didn’t stop Denia U3A WITH brollies at the ready, more than 100 people turned up for the U3A Denia Allotment Open Day. There were plenty of activities with a free raffle, bottle stall, book stall, plant sales, petanque and a quiz. Plenty of lovely burgers, paella and salad, and drinks were

also available.

The quiz was won by Duncan, who knew that there are 2,500 varieties of potato, and Douglas won the raffle prize of a lovely hamper of vegetables.

As October is when they are replanting for the Christmas and early January veg, the U3A team

are asking for some frost - but not too much - to enable a great crop of Brussels sprouts.

Next year, there are already plans to hold the Allotment Open Day in September, so they can show off the size of their onions.

The group love showing off their allotments to anyone, so

please pass by if you can, especially on a Saturday when you might get some tea and cake.

Rubbish bins shut down DUE to lack of funds to repair them, Benidorm Council has been forced to shut down a number of its underground rubbish containers.

They were originally installed to avoid the unsightly accumulation of rubbish that was often seen around the bins, especially in the busier areas of the municipality, but in many cases it’s resulted in an even poorer image.

It is understood the broken ones will not be repaired, as there are plans to put out to tender a new rubbish collection contract to replace the current one that expires at the end of the year.

The original cost of the scheme of placing rubbish underground was close to €1 million.

Back from the slaughter...

MUCHAMIEL Council has been able to recover its historic slaughterhouse and have turned it into a leisure and cultural centre thanks to a grant of €3.3 million from the Alicante Provincial Government. The new facilities include a multipurpose room, a sports hall, children’s play area, and plenty of parking.

The renovation saw a new roof, a complete rewiring, new floors, new painting and carpentry work, drinking water fountains, trees, and benches.

T is com m only believed that the art of flower arr anging is derived from the Japanese Ikebana, liter ally ‘arrange flowers,’ however there is evidence to suggest the art was practised by the ancient Egyptians.

Whatever the history, Lilian Coleman, the guest at the recent Jalon Valley Help (JVH) fundraising event, clearly demonstrated she is a Master (or should that be Mistress) of the art by producing five truly stunning arrangements, much to the delight and appreciation of the 80 JVH members and friends who attended the event which raised in excess of €1,000.

The demonstration was interspersed with many questions from the audience and allowed Lilian to share some ‘tricks of the trade’ and tell a little of how she came to be so accomplished, following in

JAVEA PLAYERS’ upcoming production of Rough Justice is a serious drama that will grab your attention just as much as any comedy.

We can’t divulge details of the case itself, but can give information in the lead-up to the defendant appearing in the dock, facing the tenacious prosecuting counsel.

One evening, a father rushes his nine-month-old baby to A&E. This instantly becomes hot news as it’s no less than the well-known TV presenter, James Highwood, who fronts a popular show called British Justice. The police become involved and immediately arrest him.

What initially seems like a straightforward case, quickly develops into a feisty courtroom battle, with sparks flying between the QC, the judge and defendant, who,

Flood preparations criticised THE local Partido Popular (PP) has criticised Javea Council for not acting to prevent possible flooding of the River Gorgos.

Every year from October onwards, the stormy conditions - similar to what was experienced by many last weekend - can result in a build up of weeds, canes and soil in the river and increase the risk of it bursting its banks.

According to reports, the responsibility rests in the hands of the Hydrographic Confederation, and it is not the job of the council to carry out the work required.

The PP said that if the rivers and ravines are regularly maintained, the beaches and parts of the municipality wouldn’t need to undergo a thorough clean-up after heavy rain and the resultant flooding.

Mystery parked car blaze FIREFIGHTERS based in Benissa had what was described as a ‘long and complicated’ incident on Sunday evening.

For reasons that are still being investigated, a parked car caught fire and threatened to spread to a nearby orange orchard.

The alarm was raised around 9pm and thanks to their quick arrival at the scene prevented any further damage. It took more than an hour-and-a-half to extinguish the fire and there were no reports of any injuries as a result. The car, however, was completely burnt out.

REMEMBER: The Poppy Appeal launch in Benidorm.

A time to remember THE Costa Blanca’s Poppy Appeal was launched last Friday in Benidorm with the official ceremony that brought together many from around the region.

The RTN was there to view the proceedings which went impressively smoothly despite the showers of rain.

There was an impressive turnout as people gathered to pay their respects to the war dead.

As standards were paraded, it was a solemn sight to see so many veterans proudly displaying their medals as part of the procession, which was led by three ladies holding the Poppy Appeal banner.

The Torrevieja pipes and drums added more colour and provided the music.

The mayor of Benidorm Sr Antonio Perez Perez, also joined the parade as did representatives from the Defence Attaché, British Embassy Madrid, British Consulate Alicante, Royal British Legion Headquarters London, and the District North Spain Chairman, Mr Don Cubbon.

Last year, the Legion in Spain collected the sum of €169,622.40 towards the Poppy Appeal, money which was used by the Royal British Legion in its charitable good works.

Acts of Remembrance Each year the British community in Spain mark ‘Remembrancetide’ in many ways, often with a Church Service on or near to Remembrance Sunday. This

year, Remembrance Sunday falls on Sunday, November 11, exactly 100 years after the guns fell silent on the Western Front, marking the end of the First World War. AS a result of being laid low with what my late partner Brian called ‘fou-fou flu’ - his term for drama queen sniffles - I decided to hand this week’s column over to Fifi, our Mini-Pinscher, and her lifelong companion Bijou, a Patterdale terrier.

I set up a digital tape recorder and went to bed for two days. Later I ran the recording through a translation program called ‘Woof’ta English’ and listened to what they had been saying about me.

Fifi: ‘Our pet’s being far more waspish than usual. I know he’s not well, but when he gets up for a pee or another dose of Frenadol, he swears and bangs things about, giving me the screaming habdabs.

AV E A’ S w a t e r c o m p a n y, A m jasa, will be renewing almost all of its fleet of vehicles at a total cost of €319,500.

The announcement follows its commitment to improving the environment, and said that all of the new cars, vans and lorry will be electric.

Not only will this reduce the need to use petrol or diesel and the release of emissions, the vehicles will require less maintenance and work out less to run.

COVIDRIO, the nonprofit company which manages the recycling of glass across Spain, has collaborated with the Calpe Council and the Valencian Community government in an awareness campaign during the current Moors and Christian fiestas.

The initiative, which begins today (Friday), aims to encourage everyone taking part in the spectacular events - both participants and spectators - to put their glass containers in special ‘wheelie bins’ which will be installed in and around the main areas.

The campaign will continue over this weekend until the final day on Monday, and will include a number of addresses from environmental experts as to the value of recycling glass.

A number of different municipalities are taking part in similar schemes across the Valencian Community, with those recycling the most, winning cash prizes.

INITIATIVE: The Moors and Christians recycling campaign is launched.

There are three different categories, depending on the number of people involved in the fiestas, and the municipality

that collects the most will receive €1,500 which can be spent on the 2019 fiestas.

Figures for 2017 showed that

the people of Calpe recycled a total of 1,253,820 kilograms of glass, an average of 60.3 kilos per person.

Prizes for local artists THE recent Outdoor Painting Competition organised by the Department in Culture in Calpe, was won by Blas Tomas Ibañez. He proudly walked away with the first prize of €800.

In second place was Judith Verheu - winning €400 - and the second prize for the best local artist went to Philip Williams, who won a selection of art equipment.

In the children’s category, the €125 cash prize went to Axel Zaragozi, and the €75 second prize was won

by Julia Romero Maya.

In this category, the local runner-up Adam Lisovski, also received artist equipment.

A total of 41 people of all ages took part in the competition which was held in the old town.

Who does this tax apply to?

This applies to anybody who is not legally a resident in Spain, but who has assets such as property in Spain, income from rental of property, income from bank deposits when applicable, royalties from intellectual property, etc.

What do I need to do?

You will need to fill out a 210 form with all of your personal details, bank account number, and the details of any assets you have in Spain. If there is more

What happens if I don’t do a tax return?

When you sell your Spanish property, 3 per cent of the sale value will be automatically withheld by the tax office. In most cases, the 3 per cent sales value will be more than the capital gains tax due, so you may be able to claim back a substantial amount. This process is slow and if you have not submitted your annual tax returns, the process will become much slower.

If you have had tenants in your Spanish property, then the tax payable is 24.75 per cent of your rental income. However, please bear in mind that all of your rental expenditure including your mortgage interest is tax deductible.

If you have had no tenants, then the income tax is calculated on the value of your property.

This rate varies between 1.1 per cent - 2 per cent. The tax rate is currently 24.75 per cent of this 1.1 per cent - 2 per cent.

Direct object pronouns - some examples Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WELL I’m quite pleased with myself, because I’ve managed to explain to my own satisfaction the meaning and use of the direct object pronoun in Spanish, which is no small task.

Whether I’ve explained it to your satisfaction is quite another matter, but there again, that’s the beauty of writing for a newspaper.

You never actually find out what confusion you might have caused.

What I promised this week was a bit of consolidation. That is, looking at what we have already talked about in some sort of context. Even this isn’t as easy as you might think, because in many typical everyday sentences some other pesky things called indirect object pronouns pop up all over the place, and I’m attempting to keep them out of it for the time being.

Lo comió todo de un tirón.

He (or she) ate it all in one go.

Now, these three examples obey the rule we looked at before which said that we have to put the direct object pronoun in front of the verb, and after the subject if there is one, as in: Mi madre me visita … (My mother me visits …)

However, there are three instances, and these are in fact very common, where the direct object pronoun appears in a different place in the sentence.

Here they are, and I’m sure some will sound familiar to you, in fact one type we have looked at a bit already.

The direct object pronoun can be tacked onto the end of these three forms:

1. The gerund (ie. -ing equivalent).

Estoy comprándolo, (I am buying it) Ese hombre está mirándote (That man is looking at you) 2. The imperative (i.e. commands).

Hazlo (do it), espéranos (wait for us) 3. Infinitives (the basic form) Tienes que explicarlo (You have to explain it).

Voy a buscaros (I’m going to look for you, I’m going to get you - plural you).

You may have noticed that in some of these examples we have added an ac-

LET’S take you back to 1962. I was 13 years of age and in the post-war days, money was tight. Pocket money never existed, so I found a way around this problem of being skint. Pop and beer bottles.

Glass bottles in those days had a small charge, which was added to the cost when purchasing, then, if you returned them you got your deposit back.

The pubs used to store the empty bottles in wooden crates in the back yard, usually with a high wall or fence, but at 13 years of age I was a member of the Coventry Godiva Harriers, an athletics club, and could run like a bat out of hell. Ruddy Nora!

The first pub that I hit was a pub called the Devonshire Arms in Wyken. With my backpack on, I hit the wall like a Japanese sniper, filled my backpack with empty bottles, and jumped back over the wall.

I then calmly took the bottles back t o t h e o ff - l i c e n c e a t t h e f r o n t o f t h e same pub, and was given a few old coins. Those few old coins enabled

Estoy comprándolo. or Lo estoy comprando.

If you’re not really coping with this, and I imagine that some of you aren’t, I can only console you by saying that this is one of the fiddliest things we ever have to learn.

If you haven’t got it, forget it for now, or just memorise one or two examples you think might be useful.

Here are one or two examples anyway: Mi madre me visita cada verano.

My mother visits me every summer.

Te veo mañana a la misma hora, vale?

I’ll see you tomorrow at the same time, okay?

One more important point for today: in the case gerunds (no. 1) and infinitives (no. 3), the direct object pronouns can in fact go in either place in a sentence, the difference just being a case of style and choice.

The great pop bottle caper…

You could buy fags back in the 50’s and 60’s from any corner shop - they would sell you a single fag and even light it for you for tuppence.

I am now still 13, but knocking on the door of 14, looking for other ways of making quick green backs.

I was wearing out my welcome, taking back empty bottles that I had

nicked. A soda syphon bottle was my death knell.

O h b o y, a s o d a s y p h o n b o t t l e w a s equal to at least six Corona pop bottles in cash returns.

One night, I clambered up the high brick wall of a pub in Coventry called the Caludon, and sat on the wall wearing my new gabardine mac.

I switched on my pencil torch to v i e w t h e b o u n t y, a n d j u s t b e l o w m e were two soda syphon bottles.

My 13-year-old brain went into overdrive, but it meant dropping at least nine feet.

I gripped the wall with my fingers and slowly let my body hang down the wall ready for the drop.

Then, the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me in my life began.

My fingers were still gripped on the wall when from out of the blue a dog jumped up and sank its teeth deeply into my new gabardine mac. It became a contest of tug of war, then finally I managed to scramble back up the wall and leg it with my new mac in tatters.

Finally, I arrived home and my dad looked at my mac. A clout around my ear and being sent to bed early with no supper were my rewards, and I realised the days were over for returning pop bottles.

One flew over the Brussels nest

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com DID anyone see the 1975 movie, One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest? Starring Jack Nicholson, the film was considered to be one of the best ever made.

The pathos-filled movie focuses on the creepy goings-on in an American mental institution.

Jack Nicholson plays the part of Randle McMurphy, a felon who learns that opportunity lies through adopting peculiar behaviour.

Based on a Ken Kesey novel, the film could easily have centred on the European Union. President Claude Juncker is one of two EU presidents, neither of whom has been elected in a conventional way, and he is notorious for his drink fuelled shenanigans.

The Brussels based regime consists of 28 commissioners but I doubt readers could name, let alone recognise them in the street.

Those who rule over us are selfelected for five-year terms.

Each is assigned a specific policy area and who decides this is

According to former Belgian prime minister Guy Verhofstadt, Hungary is a now a threat to world peace and the US must act without hesitation. Verhofstadt is president of the European Parliament’s Liberals and Democrats bloc.

This and other similar capers in the EU suggest that Randle McMurphy has a seat waiting for him in the European parliament.

YOU are a lot more successful than you think.

Too many of us define success by status, wealth and our position in society, although these fall into the realms of success, it is not the true definition of success.

For example, those perceived as a success at business, can be unsuccessful as a parent, those perceived successful at earning money can be as unsuccessful at keeping or investing it.

When asked what we want in life, the answer is rather general; citing money, wealth, happiness and so forth. These are obvious conditions desired by most along with no real direction on how to achieve them, further amplifying the wrong perception of success.

caught up in the outcome of success that we lose focus on doing what is right, thus resulting in unhappiness. This is not success.

Success comes at the beginning of your journey, not at the end, and opposing your character to get there will not serve you once your

goal has been reached.

So, how successful are you?

What defines a successful person?

Simply, it is anyone who is purposely doing something they have chosen to do, a person who is progressively realising that

choice for a worthy cause. In order to succeed you must continuously work on your chosen ideal or dream. When you’re aware why you rise each morning and the direction you want to go, for the greater good, then you are already successful. The moment you decide to work towards your chosen goal then the success process starts.

Stop thinking of reasons why you cannot be successful, think objectively of reasons why you can be successful.

This said, successful people are not without problems and worries themselves, but what they have succeeded in, is learning how to solve those worries and problems.

We are all successful if we are striving to do better in the choices we make each day, it comes to us by the very person we want to become.

Learning and self improvement each day provides nourishment, enabling us to become successful as people. Results in life are directly related to your philosophy; adopt a different mind-set and view of success.

Always remember, by making a worthy choice and acting upon it, you are already a success.

Be the best version of you each and every day, only then will success follow.

T’S not easy making it as a street artist in cities like London, Paris, New York, and equally so in Spain. I always wondered why there wasn’t any artist on the streets of Benidorm.

New York street artists are not required to have vendor ’s licences, their work is protected by the First Amendment. They are independent operators, unified only by city laws restricting how and when they can work.

Walking up to the Balcon del Mediterraneo, a high point midway between the Levante and Poniente beach where the area has a few market stalls and several café-bars serving diners al fresco, I came across the illusive street artists.

I started talking to a Spanish artist named Lucil-

goes with being self-employed, and then you have to pay for a permit which is €180, then pay extra for certain days and fiestas.

All that before you put pastel to paper.

“There’s no noise or damage, just somebody

drawing pictures. Artists deserve to make a living wage, having the ability to make people smile and laugh is a very powerful thing,” said Luciliano.

A city without portrait and caricature artists is sterile and grey, he said,

he believes caricature brings life to the environment and doesn’t understand why the restrictions exist.

“It would be great to have more caricature artists in Benidorm, but I don’t feel the street pays enough to make it worth it.

“If we could be independent operators, it would be kind of a gateway, allowing

artists to get out there and draw for the hell of it,” he said. “And it would be a way for artists to be discovered.”

health THE world has been hit with an epidemic that could potentially kill older people. The crisis looming over our seniors today, is social isolation.

The consequences of isolation could seriously challenge and threaten the well-being of older people. In fact, older people who are isolated are twice as likely to die prematurely. Shockingly, the mortality rate could even match that of smokers, whilst being twice as dangerous as obesity.

It’s not surprising that many people feel socially isolated given that around 7.2 per cent of Europeans admit to never meeting up with relatives or friends. In fact over one in 10 older people over 65, across twothirds of European countries, say they have no friends or never see them.

Social isolation can lead to illness and disability.

Worringly, around 500,000 people in the UK aged over 60 spend at least one day on their own with no contact with other people. But social isolation can have serious health implications. Isolation can make people more vulnerable to developing conditions like dementia, becoming disabled, ending up in hospital, neglecting themselves, and can cause psychological distress.

Even just very simple things

How we can help tackle senior isolation like eating meals with other people, or sharing hobbies, can make a huge difference.

Social interaction can help to significantly lower depression, boost the immune system and help keep our brains active. Keeping active and involved in the community can become central to an older person’s good health and well-being.

What can you do?

Why not take up a new hobby and join a craft club or social group?

There are many social clubs for seniors, and others that would be suitable despite not being age specific.

Creative clubs such as sewing or knitting can be great, as these activities bring with them a sense of purpose and enjoyment, which can make a big difference.

After all, it doesn’t matter what age you are to start sewing or knitting. Take inspiration from one 91year-old man who spends his golden years knitting hats.

While sitting in his hospice bed,

Mr Boogaart has so far knitted around 8,000 hats so far, which he donates to the homeless.

He’s been knitting hats for 15 years, and now it only takes him two days to finish one. When asked why he does it, he says simply that he enjoys helping other people.

No matter how seniors are encouraged to become less isolated, it is vital that you give those you know and love support and advice to enable them to do so.

Just a small amount of human contact each week can improve lives and increase happiness, and this can have a dramatic effect on overall health in the future.

If you know somebody who you think may be isolated and suffering from loneliness, try reaching out to them today. You could transform their life.

IN today’s modern world, more traditional male and female roles have switched and the lines blurred.

Encouraging women to stay at work and men to become house husbands has become the norm with many advocating the role reversals, but is that they really the answer?

New research claims that switching these ‘conventional’ roles is actually making both sexes unhappy.

Researchers at the University of Illinois examined data of nearly 1,500 men and 1,800 women aged between 52 and 60.

They reported that when females were the main breadwinners, there was an increased level in symptoms of depression with the opposite occurring in men.

When they were the main earners, their psychological well-being was found to be at its highest. A man’s well-being de-

creased when they left the workforce to become home-makers, but for

women, their well-being was not affected by leaving their jobs to stay at home.

SIMO was just a kitten when he was left on a stranger’s doorstep.

Last year, a mature stray cat deposited Simo, a Siamese kitten, on the doorstep of a home in Mojacar. The stray cat had been fed on that same doorstep from time to time.

She didn’t belong to the house, but must have recognised the kindness of the owners, and so delivered Simo the abandoned kitten to the kind couple who would feed him.

But he wasn’t the only one! Within the same month, the female cat delivered four other abandoned kittens to the same home, then promptly disappeared.

One year later, the five nurtured kittens are fully grown and healthy, and now the homeowners

Cutting edge technology in the 2019 Hyundai Nexo H

YUNDAI has introduced its technologically-advanced 2019 Nexo fuel cell SUV. Nexo is the new technological flagship of Hyundai’s growing eco-vehicle portfolio and marks Hyundai’s continued momentum with the industry’s most diverse SUV powertrain lineup, and will be available in California before the end of 2018.

Going electric... cheaper than believed

A

CCORDING to car market experts CAP HPI, the cost of maintaining an electric car is much less than many people think.

A recent report showed that it costs an average of 23 per cent less than what is involved in the traditional petrol engine.

It’s accepted that the initial cost of buying an electric car is higher than the equivalent brand of fuel-driven model, but at least for the present, they are significantly cheaper to run.

The headline for low EV running costs is how much cheaper they are to refuel than a petrol or diesel car, with the (almost) untaxed electricity making EVs very appealing.

However, all that is likely to change when electric cars reach a significant percentage of new car sales. CAP HPI believes that there will be a

drop of fuel duty for petrol and diesel cars, and for it to be replaced with road pricing where drivers pay a fixed amount per every mile driven.

But even when that happens, electric cars will still have a cost advantage over an ICE car, with CAP HPI reporting that, on average, EVs

cost 23 per cent less to maintain than an equivalent ICE car.

Even for a small car like the Renault Zoe, there would be a saving of 35.7 per cent over three years when compared to a Vauxhall Corsa; and in the case of the Nissan Leaf - the most popular electric car in the UK - the saving over the same period when put up against a VW Golf 1.0 TSI, is still 19 per cent.

Although the number of electric cars on UK roads has gone up by 128 per cent in the last three years, there are still only 37,483 electric cars on the road in the UK - just one in 800 cars - so road pricing is probably still a few miles away in the distance yet.

T was our fourth day at sea on our cruise ship ‘Eclipse’ and if you haven’t experienced this mode of travel before, allow me to define cruising for you: It’s a way of killing time between meals.

Anyway, we had visited Palma and Messina, and were en-route to the lovely island of Mykonos.

We were at dinner and engaged in conversation with a charming Canadian couple on an adjacent table, when I spotted a woman heading our way from across the restaurant with a determined look on her face and clutching something in one hand that I couldn’t quite discern.

She was locked on to me and my first thought was; could this be someone I owed money to? And then; perhaps she’s someone I had maligned in this column in the past.

As it turned out, my second thought was nearer the mark, because she broke into a smile and revealed what had been clasped in her hand - a picture of me that had obviously been cut from a newspaper.

This newspaper to be precise, because she informed us that living in Javea, she

I love the Beatles, and pride myself on having a pretty good knowledge of them and THE BEATLES: Maybe Colin should read up on them. their songs, having been just

for the quiz, only to be upstaged by one man who was a walking encyclopaedia of everything Beatles. He wiped the floor with the rest of us, wowing us with his vast knowledge.

Not surprisingly, he turned out to be the owner of one of the most important collections of Beatles memorabilia in the world, and he just had to be on our cruise.

Never mind, at least I could comfort myself with the fact that I had a fan in the northern Costa Blanca.

SAMM - Caldero Day 2018 T

HE Caldero Day celebration at Los Alcazares is a long awaited fiesta on many people’s calendar and, for some years, SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) has booked a pitch where members can come and let their hair down for a bit of fun on the beach. It also helps attract the odd new member.

This year the day dawned with a blue sky and sun which continued all day. Julian Pering and Bob Miles brought the SAMM marquee down early and a few other Balaton members gathered to help assemble and erect it.

There was an excellent turnout of between 50 and 60 members and friends, with other mem-

SAMM always have a ‘theme’ to the event and this year it was ‘Mamma Mia’ with people being asked to dress all in white; most did. The traditional flash dance was performed on each hour

Pego Golf Society Pairs IF the last golf day had been played in Javea, it would have been washed out, but in Oliva Nova there was no rain during the night and early morning, and the Society had the best conditions possible for their tournament.

The course is slowly coming back to its best, even though the fairways were very long with the new grass planted, but there are definite signs of improvement.

The PGS were delighted to have two guests joining for the day - Kevin Newman and Michael Jones and they were warmly welcomed by the Captain for 2018, namely David Phillips.

Results on the day were: 1st - Michael Connelly and Celia Cronin (73 points), 2nd - Malcolm Wise and Peter Cornes (73 on CB), 3rd - Andrew Harrison and Fiona Sankey (69) and 4th - Russ Peters and Paul Trigwell (65).

Nearest the Pins: Michel Grin (Hole 5) and Colin Foster (Hole 16).

There were three ‘two’s’ shot by Andrew Harrison, Colin Foster and Keith Price, and Keith also won the ‘Balls in the Water’ competition with 87.

Finally, in the Match Play semi-finals, John Guest beat Donna Green 4 and 2, and John Evans beat Brian Barden by 3 and 1.

It was the Captain David’s birthday last week, so he presented a bottle of red wine from a card draw to the happy winner John Nicol.

and then provided sailing trips to anyone who asked, including, at the request of his Grandma, one little five-year-old Spanish boy who seemed to really enjoy the experience.

Julian as usual provided a fun board game, which had many visitors and Mick Burgess brought his beach game along and great fun was had trying to knock the skittle off the pole.

After the last flash dance some of the performers dashed into the sea in full costume to cool off and put on a spontaneous repeat of their performance but in the sea. While they were doing this there was a fly pass by the Spanish air force acrobatic team ‘Patrulla Águila,’ Eagle Patrol in English.

Javea Green... the season so far THE Winter League have, at the time of writing, played three matches and have won them all by 9-3 points away to Bonalba, 7-5 points home to Quesada and 8-4 points away to Benitachell Bowls Club (BBC). Their Berleen Team has also won all its matches, 21-13 shots, 26-9 shots and 35-6 shots.

This is an excellent start to the season and bodes well for the future, so well done to the Winter League players, ably led by Squad Captain, Clive English. They are currently in top spot on the League Table just ahead of rivals Quesada.

The other three Squads play in the Northern League.

The Quartz Squad, led by Mike O’Neill, have so far played four matches, winning three, with points of 6-4 away to JG Opal, 6-4 home to El Cid Swords and 7-3 away to BBC Tigers. They lost one by 3-7 points home to fellow JG Squad, Onyx. Their Challenger Team has won one and lost three of their matches so currently have two points to their name.

So, overall a mixed bag of results for the Northern League Teams, but it is early days yet.
