ACHIEVEMENT: Bob Cope reached the summit of Mount Kilamanjaro at the age of 71.
H AV I N G e n j o y e d h i s mountain walking here in Spain, U3A member Bob Cope decided to have a go at climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent. On arrival at the base Bob found he was part of a group of 13 and, with an average age of 46, Bob found that at 71 he was by far the oldest member to take part. Kilimanjaro is a dor-
mant volcano and is the highest mountain in the world, which stands alone and is not part of a great mountain range. At 5,895 metres or
19,341 feet it is two thirds the height of Everest. As the climb progressed the party was deliberately made to climb areas with
steep ascents and then descents to acclimatise them to the lack of oxygen.
