Slot machine cheat arrested

N

ATIONAL POLICE based in Alicante have arrested a man who allegedly falsely obtained more than €2,000 from a slot machine.

According to reports, he manipulated part of the machine’s mechanism so that every time he put a note in the machine to obtain credits, he was able to retrieve the note.

It is understood that the man detained was a regular visitor to the place that had the machine, and it wasn’t until the owners noticed that there was a ‘missing’ €2,600 that their suspicions were raised.

They then checked the CCTV cameras and quickly noticed that this one particular customer always carried out a number of

The grants - of up to €10,000 - are being made available from the Valencian Employment and Training Service (SERVEF) to fight the usual increase in unemployment in the sector at this time of the year, and will affect those employees that have their fixed or temporary contracts extended for 90 days.

ALREADY under construction, the Ministry of Public Works has invested €250,000 in the project to build new pavements and pedestrian crossings in the small municipality of La Xara, near to Denia.

The aim is to have the work completed within three months, and will see a new stretch of pavement between the roundabout that gives access to the hospital and the entrance to La Xara.

The 900 metres where the work is being carried out sees around 6,000 vehicles use the road on a daily basis, and the fact it’s a long and straight section causes people to drive too fast and pose a danger to the areas that aren’t covered by a pavement.

Benidorm looking for new visitors The Visit Benidorm Tourism Foundation has received a significant increase in the annual grant it gets to promote the area.

This year, they received €100,000 in subsidies - up from €27,000 the year before - from the regional tourist authority that goes toward marketing the popular visitor capital of the Costa Blanca.

The main aim is to promote Benidorm as more than just a place to take a two week annual holiday with the sun and the beaches-a-plenty on offer.

However, recent changes in the habits of the tourist has seen pressure coming from the re-emerging markets of Turkey and Egypt that have both threatened to

‘steal’ visitors. In fact, according to recent reports, the number of British tourists to Benidorm has fallen by 420,000 this year to date... a drop of 9 per cent.

Sports’ tourism is high on the list of the new attractions being promoted, as well as the attractions of an autumn-winter break. Spain’s neighbours, Portugal, are also being targeted and the area has been featured at a number of recent national and international tourism fairs.

In addition, be prepared to see more film units around as advertising, film and TV companies are being encouraged to use Benidorm as a backdrop for their future productions.

Poison gas cloud hits pool T

HIRTEEN people - 12 of them children - have suffered from the effects of poisoning while they were swimming in or stayed around the municipal pool in Oliva, located in the sports centre.

Two of those who appeared to have suffered more than the others from what is believed to be an alleged leak of chlorine gas were taken immediately to the Francesc de Borja Hospital in Gandia. The remainder, after receiving some initial treatment in the ambulances that were called to the scene were taken to the Jaume Roig de Oliva health centre for further assessment.

The most common symptoms were irritation to the skin and eyes, and breathing difficulties. Several of the victims began vomiting and it was this that caused the most alarm and

the emergency services to be called.

When they arrived, the facilities were completely evacuated and the investigation got underway to establish whether the leak had been caused by an accident, mechanical failure or human error.

Stung into action FIREFIGHTERS from San Vicente del Raspeig were called to a home in nearby San Juan de Alicante to remove a nest that contained hundreds of wasps.

According to reports, the insects had been in the boiler room all summer and had begun to pose a danger to the family that lived in the house.

The firefighters took extreme caution as they approached the 40 x 40 centimetre nest and were able to remove it piece by piece without frightening the wasps. It is understood that the wasps weren’t the dangerous Asian Wasp that has already seen the deaths of three people in Galicia after suffering stings.

Germany work offer GERMAN businessmen are giving young people from Javea the opportunity to look for work in their country.

They are offering one week in Germany with accommodation paid for. The initiative seeks to put the unemployed in contact with companies where they can be interns in the Baden-Wurttemberg region of Germany.

The scheme is aimed at 16 to 25 year olds who want to learn a trade related to construction, computer science, the car industry, tourism or hospitality.

Dutch ‘contract killer’ arrested MAN who has been on the run from the authorities in the Netherlands has been arrested in La Nucia.

The 54-year-old Dutch national was detained by members of the Violent Crime Group of the Alicante Judicial Police in connection with an incident in an Amsterdam street back in May 2004.

He has been a fugitive ever since.

carry out ‘contract killings’. It is understood that he could be facing life imprisonment back in his home country.

The Dutch police were

recently able to trace their suspect to where it was believed he was living in La Nucia, and carried out an arrest at the beginning of the month.

Renovation work CALPE Council continues to spend money on renovating the Casa del Cultura.

They have allocated €54,530 for giving the facade a make-over, that includes repairing cracks in the cornices and giving the whole building a complete repaint. They will also be repairing any leaks that have developed over time.

Back in June of this year, the council replaced the 512 seats in the building at a cost of €78,000.

Red Cross service reduced SINCE October 1, the Javea Red Cross has reduced the seven-daya-week, 24-hour service simply due to a lack of money.

According to reports, the full service will still be operating at w e e k e n d s ( o n F r i d a y, S a t u r d a y and Sunday) and during fiestas,

but the usual Monday to Thursday coverage - both for emergencies and non-urgent transportation will only be available between 8am and 10pm.

Any future ‘out of hours’ service will be covered by the SVB (Basic Life Support) ambulance.

Sea risks still being taken DESPITE the lack of lifeguard coverage - which ended on September 30 in the area - many people are still taking their life in their own hands off the Arenal Beach in Javea.

With the sun shining and the weather warm, swimmers are still entering the Mediterranean with waves as high as two metres.

There is no red flag flying and no accompanying warning signs due to it being ‘off-season.’

According to reports, a number of children were among the tourists spotted swimming in the rough seas, oblivious of the dangers lurking in the water and the presence of strong currents.

Warmest September for four years enced across the province, September - with the exception of Rojales - was classed as ‘very dry’.

Whereas Torrevieja saw 50lm2, Alicante-Elche Airport (48lm2) and Alicante (42.4lm2), thanks to the torrential rain that hit the

Vega Baja in the middle of the month, Rojales recorded 120lm2. For most areas, rainfall was 25 per cent less than normal.

The 24-hour period of September 22 and 23 recorded the highest daily temperature of 35ºC in

certain parts of the region such as Sumacarcer, Xativa, Carcaixent, Alginet and Jalance.

And finally, during the first 12 days of September there was a storm somewhere in the Valencian Community.

IGURES released by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) show that last month was one of the warmest Septembers in Alicante since 1950.

As October has taken hold, the mornings are a little cooler and people are adding more hot water into their shower mix, it has been revealed that the temperature did not drop below 16ºC during September. The average daily temperature was 24.8ºC in Alicante and 25.6ºC in Orihuela, and the warmest since 2014.

Calpe U3A meeting THE next meeting of the Calpe U3A at the Sol Ifach on October 18 will be a very special one.

They are delighted to welcome the Denia Rock Choir who will be giving the U3A a performance of their repertoire. The Choir are coming to the end of their third year singing together, and are becoming very well-known across the area as an enthusiastic group performing songs from the 1950’s and 1960’s through to a selection of some of the most recent and contemporary numbers.

The meetings are always held on the third Thursday of the month at the Sol Ifach Hotel in Calpe. Doors open at 10am for a 10.30am start, with the Choir starting at 11.15am at the next get-together.

Power issues solved BENIDORM Council has announced an agreement with electricity company Iberdrola to solve some of the supply problems in the ‘Old Town’.

The plan is to reinforce the connections between a number of streets in the area which aims to stop the regular power cuts.

The work will also see the wiring placed underground and thus improve the look of many of the walls that are presently the location for the cables in Calle Malpas and Calle Santa Faz.

Bus safety measures DENIA Council has asked that the ALSA bus company guarantee the safety of the passengers using the bus station. This especially applies to those people who find themselves having to load and unload their luggage in the middle of the road.

This is as a result of the continuing problem that prevents larger buses from entering the terminal building. The council has also announced that they will be installing a shade to stop passengers getting wet.

ONCE again, the generous Sue and Pat Donovan opened their home and garden for another Macmillan Cancer Support Group event in Moraira.

The coffee morning, one of many which were held on Friday, September 28, raised almost €4,000, and takes the grand total to over €17,000 having been collected in the past five years.

Thanks to the fundraising efforts of Peter Fulham after a recently completed sponsored run, the amount included his generous contribution of €500.

The auction was in the very expert hands of Lee from Druids Cave in Moraira - who entertained everyone with his usual excellent wit and humour.

The live music was kindly performed by Dave Peachey and Graham Sherrin.

Another €300 came from a donation from Muku of the Kathmandu Indian Restaurant in Moraira following a dinner organised by Sue in aid of the charity.

There was an incredible selection of raffle prizes and auction items, all kindly donated by local businesses, restaurants and friends.

FFICERS of the Guardia Civil have dealt a major blow to the international trafficking of marihuana after finding 8,000 plants in Campello, Muchamiel and Alicante.

According to reports, the crop was under the control of a Dutch organisation which had plantations in several houses. From these bases, they allegedly sent the drugs to Holland, Belgium and Germany.

During the operation carried out by the Guardia Civil in San Juan de Alicante, six people between the ages of 39 and 43 were arrested, five of which were remanded in custody. Further along the coast, in the municipality of La Nucia, another 20 crops were uncovered that contained a further 80,000 plants The group have been accused of d r u g t r a ff i c k i n g , b e l o n g i n g t o a criminal organisation, and the illegal possession of weapons. In addition, they are charged with defrauding an electrical company as

TWO people who swindled more than €2,500 by selling mobile phones that didn’t exist have been detained in Alicante.

According to reports, the pair were posing as legitimate companies apparently selling and repairing telephone equipment via several internet web pages.

online reputation that they eventually managed to sell non-existent top of the range mobile telephones to four people. Each one had made a bank transfer to the account of one of those arrested... a total of €2,500.

Thanks to the hard work of the investigation team in Alicante, they were able to discover that the crimes had taken place in Pamplona, A Coruña, Granada and Alicante.

Cheaper council power bills AS a result of a recent agreement between Benidorm Council and the Alicante Provincial Government, the council has reduced its CO2 emissions for electricity consumption to zero.

It means that all the energy consumed in the municipality which includes street lighting and council buildings, comes from a 100 per cent renewable source.

Not only has such a move meant improvements to the environment, it has also meant savings in the costs of electricity for the council.

Integral equality FOR the ninth time, Benissa has held its Multicultural Festival aimed at promoting integration and equality.

Thirteen countries have taken part in the event which saw a sharing of national cuisine and traditions and was located in the Parque Dolores Piera.

Councillor Fernando Lopez Corsi said that 43 per cent of the population of Benissa have come from other countries, and those taking part in the festival came from Germany, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Spain, Morocco, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Speeding car A MOTORIST was arrested for speeding and driving without insurance after being clocked driving at 124 mph in a 50mph zone in Avenida de los Naranjos, in Valencia, at the weekend. The 34-yearold was stopped just before midnight on Sunday.

Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie are group leaders of three groups: Spanish Culture and Cuisine, Travellers’ Tales and History. And the success of all three groups is testament to their unflagging diligence and attention to detail.

Esther Canet at the Alicante Fashion Week YOUNG designer Esther Canet, of TeuladaMoraira, presented her creations at the recent Alicante Fashion Week. Her spring/summer collection 2019, ‘what’s behind the quilling technique,’ was part of the Sunday exhibition day.

Quilling inspired her collection and she focuses on spicing up femininity and the woman’s body.

Her brand, Homónima, stands for fashion which is not supposed to be too artistic and only suits the cat walk.“I do not like what fashion has become on the catwalk. I want the women who fall in love with one of my designs during the fashion show to be able to imagine themselves wearing the dress on a daily basis,” says Esther Canet.

HELP visit Javea MEMBERS of HELP International Benidorm had their own away-day last week as they visited Javea by coach.

After a short time exploring the quaint town and a little shopping, it was into the Scallops restaurant for an excellent lunch.

Perhaps the food and the drink was going down a lit-

tle too well as it was realised that it was getting close to ‘home time’ and the awaiting coach was parked at the other end of the port.

Never fear... Peter was the hero of the day - after he ran all the way to the coach - and had the driver bring it to the group who piled on and enjoyed the

return journey.

Everyone enjoyed the experience, which was helped with it being a beautiful day without being too hot.

The next trip for HELP International Benidorm will be a pre-Christmas shopping trip to the Condominium in Murcia, followed by a visit to Ikea. This is being held on November 7.

U3A Calpe on foot in Elda and Elche AROUND 20 members of the U3A Calpe had a 9am start for their latest trip to the footwear museum in Elda.

After a very smooth journey, they arrived at the museum which has one of the largest collections of anything connected with shoes that you’ll find anywhere.

From tools and machinery - which included a large selection of the iconic Singer sewing machines - to historic footwear, there was something on display to interest everyone.

There were hundreds of shoes in special display cases, with the oldest exhibit being a child’s boot dating back to the 14th century.

In addition, there were some shoes that once belonged to famous celebrities and a number made by students.

The visitors were shown around the factory by Antonia, who explained the shoemaking process in English and said that it was a major employer in the area.

On the return journey, the group called into the factory of Salvador Artesano in Elche, and so continued the shoe experience as many bought a number of pairs on offer at bargain prices.

I AM not a morning person. I’ll happily work from midday to 3am but please don’t expect me to function at, say, 7am, a time when my sleep is at its deepest, and my dreams most vivid.

So when I got an email from Sarah Major, who hosts Radio Sheffield’s early morning ‘god-slot’, asking whether I could do a telephone interview for her programme on September 30 she got a resounding no.

She was so anxious to get my views about the 30th anniversary of the publication of Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses that she suggested a pre-recorded interview instead - and to this - I readily agreed.

Why choose me for the interview? Sarah had ascertained that I edit the Freethinker magazine, launched in 1881 in the UK. The anti-religious publication immediately became cause célèbre when its founder, George William Foote, was charged with blasphemy and sentenced to a year’s imprisonment with hard labour.

FREE SPEECH: Salman Rushdie got the death sentence for his book. authorities hoped, kill off the publication. Instead its popularity soared and in its hey-day it was bought by thousands each week, by people who were fed up to their back teeth with religious leaders banging on about their various brands of superstition.

Blasphemy was back in the headlines after the publication of The Satanic Verses. Muslims in the

UK and abroad took to the streets and demanded that Rushdie be prosecuted for offending Islam, and were in full support of a fatwa issued by Iran’s religious head, Ayatollah Khomeini, to have Rushdie assassinated.

Sarah Major wanted my thoughts on whether freedom of expression over the past three decades had improved or worsened, and I told

her that, without a doubt, that it was now becoming a great deal more difficult to say anything at all that would give offence to faith-heads of all stripes.

I forcefully made my point that all religions were ridiculous, and that the millions of people who happily live their lives without a smidgeon of faith should be free to ridicule the words and actions of religious lead-

ers whenever they say or do something stupid.

Coincidentally, a day after Major’s programme was aired, Brendan O’Neill, editor of Spiked magazine, published a piece entitled We are all Ayatollahs now.

In it he argued that fatwas against offensive speech are now issued daily, by the Western Twitterati as much as by Eastern religious tyrants. Intolerance of so-called blasphemy against Islam and Muhammad is now as pronounced in trendy Western circles as it is in Islamic imam circles.

“The stunningly arrogant belief that anyone who offends one’s faith or ideology or identity deserves to be severely reprimanded - the belief that motored the Ayatollah’s death sentence on Rushdie - is now the central belief of virtually every new political movement in Western academic and public life.

He concluded: “Thirty years after Rushdie’s novel was published, the battle isn’t over. The struggle for the right of people to think what they like and say what they please, and to mock all gods, prophets, ideas and fads, remains as pressing today as it has ever been.” I couldn’t agree more.

Spanish Armada flagship goes under the hammer

TWO young Algerian nationals have been arrested by the National Police after their alleged involvement in a violent robbery in Alicante.

According to reports, the two men - aged 17 and 20 - approached the 54-year-old woman as she was walking along a street and began to shake her.

At first, she was strong enough to resist her attackers but they eventually threw her to the ground and wrestled with her until they were able to rob her of her handbag and a silver chain around her neck.

As they fled the scene, the woman was able to call the police by dialling 091 using a passer-by’s mobile phone who found her lying on the pavement.

Two National Police patrols arrived on the scene almost immediately and were able to catch the pair of attackers within minutes. They were found hiding under a vehicle parked up in a nearby street.

The woman victim was reunited with all her belongings while the men were released on bail.

FTER close to 14 months moored in a dock close to the Panoramis centre in Alicante, the port authority has asked for a public auction to get rid of the replica of the Santisima Trinidad.

After removing it from a more prominent position close to the Hotel Melia back in July 2017, the authority declared the ship abandoned in February of this year.

According to reports, the starting price for the auction has been set at â‚Ź152,000, and if there is no successful bidder it has already been decided it will end up in the scrapyard.

Anyone that is interested in acquiring the ship can visit it by prior appointment with the Port of Alicante authorities, and the deadline for the bids is October 30.

GUILTY PARTY: One of them ‘did it’... but who?

Whodunnit or did it?

AROUND 40 members of the Jávea Players had an excellent dinner recently at the Jávea Golf Club, the event being an evening of murder.

Well, one murder actually, a Lord, with the local bobby trying to make head or tails of the alibis of the available suspects, of whom there were six.

His young widow was the obvious one, but all of them held murky grudges.

Despite this apparently acrimonious side to some of the members, they really are a friendly bunch and you don’t need to

have a penchant for treading the boards to join them: the audience on the other side of the footlights is equally important.

The Javea Players are always happy to welcome new members in whatever capacity. Apart from actors there are lots of opportunities to help backstage: handy with a needle? = wardrobe, penchant for sleuthing? We often need to find props which may not be in our store.

No parking place THERE is some bad news for locals who park their vehicles in a car park on Calle Virgen de la Macarena in Benidorm; it’s going to close.

The plot is owned by the Sareb Asset Management Company, al-

though the area was originally given to the company by the local council. Even though it only contains parking for 30, the loss of the space will add even further to the issues of parking within the municipality.

The storms of recent weeks have seen the offending items that usually block the sewers in Javea, being swept out to sea and have returned to the beaches, thanks to the

stronger tides.

It’s not only the beaches and the rocks that are covered with the wet wipes; fisherman are also continually having to remove them from the nets, and the proliferation has led to Javea Council reminding people not to flush these items down the toilet, as they do not degrade in the same way paper does.

Bicycle day for all

ENIDORM celebrated bicycle day for everyone on Sunday. The city was promoting the use of bicycle lanes. RTN was there for the 9.30am pedal-off under the inflatable starting and finish line in the park Foietes.

Mums, dads, children of all ages, even the odd pensioner adjusted their bicycle clips and joined the convoy on the new planned route which covered 12,000 metres along the beach front area.

Some were on tandems or expensive-lightweight mountain bikes, whereas others preferred a battery assisted machine.

The city has 40 kms of

bike lanes available for cycle enthusiasts from those who take it seriously as a sport, a healthy means of transport or simply for leisure, whatever the reasons one thing they all agreed on was it’s fun.

At the finish line refreshments were available and at the grand finale a raffle with various prizes for those who bought tickets.

Hospital musical interlude THE music of Mozart flooded the La Pedrea Hospital in Denia last weekend.

The concert was free for everyone and for a while on Saturday afternoon, the area was transformed into a classical extravaganza thanks to clarinet players Eduard Terol and Jordi Otis, who were backed up with a full orchestra.

The aim of bringing some entertainment to patients, visitors and carers was fully achieved.

Fiesta recycling success FIGURES just released show that during the Moors and Christians festivals held in Javea during July, a total of 1,750 kilos of glass containers were able to be recycled... the equivalent to 6,600 glasses.

The initiative was promoted by the company Ecovidrio, who are in charge of recycling such products across Spain.

The aim was to increase the awareness of those taking part in the parades about not throwing away glasses, and for Javea it’s estimated that each person managed to recycle 5.75 kg.

This amount puts the municipality in fourth place in a nationwide competition that has encouraged recycling.

PROUD OWNERS: The show attracted more than 100 visitors and owners.

Barkinside dogs are winners THERE was a mix of fun and delightful chaos at the park in La Romana where 57 dogs entered the Barkinside Annual Dog Show. There were stalls selling goodies and food and of course the inevitable raffle and an auction.

Over 100 dog owners - and dog lovers - from all over the area came to show off their dogs, many of which had originally been adopted from Barkinside. Children from King’s College in Alicante came to look after and show several of the dogs that are currently available for adoption.

Danny Castillo not only judged the

classes but also gave a demonstration of his wonderful assistance dog Voltio.

This included Voltio opening drawers to fetch items for his owner and also opening the fridge to take out fruit and water.

Danny had a difficult job with so many dogs, all of whom are the best in their owners’ eyes.

However, the big winner of the day was the podenco Dakota, affectionately called Ducky. Not only did she win ‘Prettiest Bitch’, she then went on to win ‘Best in Show’. In addition, and perhaps more importantly than this, she also found her forever home with Keeley

Poole and Sharon Healey. There were tears all round.

The day raised €1,015 for Barkinside, the animal rescue and sanctuary based between La Romana and Novelda.

HE wonderful generosity of Gary and the team behind Giving4Giving never ceases to amaze, and to prove this he was out and about last weekend supporting another great cause.

Gary went to a charity fundraising event at the Almafra Campsite in aid of Mind UK and donated €1,000. The whole day was a great success and by the end of the day, and including the G4G donation, a superb €3,700 was raised. But the generosity of G4G didn’t end there. They told one of the charity event organisers, Vikki Caton, to round up the total to €4,000 and G4G would make up the remaining €300 for such a deserving cause.

Javea’s sea of tapas OVER this coming weekend from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday, a total of 22 restaurants will be taking part in the ‘sea of tapas’ that is about to invade the Duanes del Mar area of Javea. They will be moving from their usual bases to take their kitchens onto the streets,

to allow locals and visitors alike, and all have prepared a special tapa - with a fish bias - to tempt the taste buds.

The event will also feature live music, a craft market, and more than enough to keep children occupied as well.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALTEA

ALTEA will soon have a new street. The local council has unanimously approved the opening of the new pedestrian link between the village and the old town. It will connect Carrer Filharmonica and Carrer Empedrat and will be named Carreró del Forn de la Viuda which, when translated means ‘The Widow’s Bakery Oven.’

The proposal was introduced at the last plenary council meeting by the councillor for Citizen Participation, Maria Lavios, who was especially pleased for two reasons. Firstly, the new road was voted for in a previous contest

among local people, and secondly to prove that such initiatives really do come to fruition and not simply a gimmick.

“This can only motivate other people to submit their ideas and suggestions in the future,” said Lavios.

According to reports, the project originally contemplated back in 1982 should be completed before Christmas and people should be able to walk along a road named in honour of Isabel Lawrence Santa Cruz, a widow who took over the local bakery with her daughters in Altea’s past.

Saving the world’s oceans THE Director of the European Environment Association (SEA), Daniel Rolileri, has been giving a series of lectures in both the secondary and high schools in Altea, as well as to members of the public in the Casa del Cultura.

The SEA is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the protection of the environment through a number of projects based on creating social

awareness and getting across the issues to people. Lectures such as those that have taken place can only encourage more citizen participation.

Daniel Rolileri said: “No matter where we live on this planet, all humans are connected to the ocean in one way or another. It plays a critically important role in everyone’s life, providing jobs, food, and absorbing much of the air pollution

generated by the more than seven billion people.”

He went on to say that “many people recognise things such as deforestation and preserving water as being threats, but have largely ignored the issue of the seas that surround us.”

Councillor Beatrice Nomdedeu thanked Mr Rolileri for his talks and for the involvement of the schools for staging the events.

ALPE Council has put out to tender the plans for a ‘Woodland Plan Project’ with the aim of creating a green stretch of land that connects the town centre with the Salinas and the beaches.

The final project is hoped to improve the urban environment by renovating the green spaces in this section of the municipality and regenerating parts of the town that have gone into decline.

The revamped area will be full of a wide variety of trees, which will include w a l n u t , p o p l a r, b a n a n a , c h e r r y, l i m e , s t r a w b e r r y, ash and mulberry trees.

C u r r e n t l y, t h e a r e a i s devoid of any vegetation apart from a number of small shrubs and mimosa plants. The new plans contemplate an installation of an irrigation that will supply all the trees that will be able to grow in the local soil without a problem.

The total cost of the project is €62,213 and will be financed by the Alicante Provincial Council.

October 9 prize giving IT’S an annual event in Calpe, and this year was no different as the municipality held the ‘Jaume Pastor i Fluixa - October 9’ prize-giving this week at the Casa de Cultura.

The celebration on the Valencian Day holiday seeks to acknowledge the work of individuals and organisations that continue to improve and enrich Calpe society.

This year ’s major prize was awarded to the Moors and Christians Association of Crist de la Suor which is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

The ‘Citizen’s Merit’ award was presented to the Civil Protection Volunteers, a group of people who regularly carry out charity work that has now been fully recognised.

The ‘Sports Merit’ award went to local Calpe resident Vicente Ferrandez Andreu, a mountain bike racer and a major promoter of the sport in the municipality.

The ‘Business Merit’ medal was awarded to the Flanders Bakery. This business was founded by the Loyson family at the beginning of the 1980’s, and is one of the most important establishments for the Belgian community, but nevertheless with products enjoyed by all the people of Calpe.

BACK in July 2012, Spain was in the middle of its third straight year of recession since the start of the financial crisis in 2008.

A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) composed a report describing the outlook for the eurozone’s fourth largest economy as ‘bleak’. But, according to reports, the final document instead used the more neutral ‘very difficult’.

It is understood that some members of the Executive Board of the IMF were critical of the changes to the report, saying they went against their usual policy of transparency.

However, another one denied that the changes were substantial, and said was justified so as not to cause alarm in the markets.

Records of the meeting where the decision was made show that Brazil’s Jose Pedro Fachada - an executive director at the IMF - said: “The Board insists on the importance of warning countries about the risks, but these warnings have been considerably reduced.”

Another executive director, Thanos Catsambas, disagreed with Fachada and said, “our chairman thought the corrected

Martin Mühleisen, director of the Strategy, Policy and Review Department, added that “the goal was not to change the report’s message. The text is

The records of the meeting also show officials of the IMF talking the possibility of a full bailout for Spain, and similar to that experienced in Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

New law stops electric cut-off

ACCORDING to the text of a new Royal Decree approved in the Spanish Parliament, utility companies will not be allowed to cut off electricity supplies due to non-payment if there are children involved.

Electricity companies will also be required to make their bills easier to understand and to inform customers on them how their costs can be reduced.

In addition, the Royal Decree also bans door-to-door salespeople who visit householders in an attempt to convince them to sign up to different gas and electricity companies.

The new law attempts to ease the blow to customers following the large increases in the wholesale market and with the coldest months of the year around the corner.

Discounts for customers on low-incomes have been raised to 15 per cent, and will be backed up with a ‘heating bonus’ paid directly to those families already receiving a reduction if their household brings in earnings below the minimum wage.

The heating allowance will be tailored according to customers’ ‘level of vulnerability’ in financial and other terms - such as health conditions or disability - and also to average temperatures in their part of Spain.

Single parents are now included automatically in the description of those who are likely to be eligible.

Cherry juice to get more rest DRINKING cherry juice may improve sleep patterns amongst older people who suffer from insomnia.

Researchers from Louisiana State University (US) found that drinking tart cherry juice in the morning and evening may help people to sleep better at night.

Drinking the juice twice a day for two weeks helped increase sleep time by nearly 90 minutes it was revealed at the annual meeting of the American Society of Nutrition.

Insomnia - defined as trouble sleeping on average more than three nights per week - is a common problem among older adults, and can seriously affect their health.

It is linked to a higher prevalence of chronic pain, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and a decline of cognitive function, or dementia.

Take a tasty tour TAKE a trip to Andalucia and you will find it offers a wide range of delicious and varied food.

Noticeably, there is a difference between what is eaten on the coast and the interior, they are both heavily linked by olive oil.

Here is a virtual taste trip around a few provinces of the community.

Salmorejo is a form of very thick gazpacho which is typical of Cordoba, as are ‘flamenquines’ which are delicious little rolls of deep-fried, breaded ham and cheese.

Malaga offers the taste tourist the

‘porra Antequerana’ which is similar to salmorejo, but served with Serrano ham and boiled eggs; this province also has a tradition of bitter olives and the excellent ‘arroz caldoso’ which is like paella but creamier.

Granada has the tasty ‘habas fritas con jamon’ which is baby beans fried in olive oil with Serrano ham or the ‘olla de San Anton’ which is a stew, traditionally made after the slaughter of a pig, which is beans and pork but with a deliciously spicy twist.

For tuna lovers Cadiz is the place to go as they offer an exquisite red

tuna - very coveted in the Japanese market - simply fried in olive oil.

Any sort of fried fish is common to the whole of Andalucia as is the breakfast of toast and oil which may seem odd to foreigners but, once tasted, you’ll never go back to Marmite.

One of the most common breakfasts is the toast and oil combination found in virtually every bar every morning. This should always be served with high quality oil as the taste and health properties are superior.

The bubbles in Champagne and cava form because they go through two fermentation processes, the first to change the grape juice into wine and the second to change the wine into

Champagne or cava. It is this second fermentation, with yeasts and sugars, which produces an abundance of CO2 which can let out up to 30 bubbles per second.

The University of Reims, in France, did a study on the importance of bubbles in Champagne and cava and

concluded that they were essential not only for the look of the drink, but also for the sensation on the tongue; there should be a lot of them, they should not be too big and should have a life of their own!

They also contain several compounds which make the Champagne taste better.

Do yourself a favour and help local farmers MOST British supermarkets are wellstocked with organic foods, but they can be difficult to find in Spain. Local farmers’ markets can provide a solution.

The availability of organic produce is limited in Spanish supermarkets, with only the largest of them providing any organic alternatives alongside regular products.

Whilst organic foods tend to be slightly more expensive in all countries, the difference is even more marked here and can be prohibitive for many customers.

The solution is to seek out organic produce in local markets, many of which now specialise in providing foods of this type. Non-

not used in Spanish, the term to look for is ‘ecologico.’

Some bad habits to avoid at home STICKING to a healthy diet is never easy, especially in the fast-paced society in which we live, but if you can change some habits in the kitchen, you’re taking a step in the right direction.

Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietician and wellness manager for Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, proposes six easy changes just to get you started with your weight loss plan.

Adding a splash or a pinch of certain ingredients

may work on cooking shows, but it’s always better to measure ingredients with cups and spoons. The ‘splash’ of olive oil you add to the cooking may look OK, but it’s probably more than you need and adds extra calories to the menu.

When you are greasing pans make sure you don’t overdo it.

Better still, use non-stick cookware so that there are no extra calories.

Don’t eat food straight from the package, as you’re more likely to eat the whole thing, instead, put everything into portions before tucking in.

When you’ve been cooking, store the extra portions in containers ready to go in the fridge before you sit down to eat. This should stop you from heading into

the kitchen and refilling your plate with what’s left over.

Don’t hide fruit and vegetables in a drawer, keep them in sight, either in the fridge or in a fruit bowl, so that you are more likely to

FAST FOOD: Some are healthy.

Fast and healthy ALTHOUGH we spend less and less time cooking and pay less and less attention to what we eat, paradoxically we are more and more worried about looking after our health, but a lack of time is not incompatible with eating good, healthy meals.

Store-bought fast food, usually for the microwave, tends to rely on fats, sugars and salt to tempt our palate, but these are bad for the body and high in calories - the same food can be made at home more cheaply and without the added fats etc.

Obviously some ingredients take longer to cook than others so with a little organising and planning, the job can get done in a shorter space of time.

If one day is set aside to spend a little more time in the kitchen, then we can cook really quickly for the rest of the week; par boiling vegetables and then freezing them is a good way to lessen time in the kitchen, planned meals are always faster than ‘inspirational’ cooking (it is always a good idea to have a meal plan when shopping).

There are also many products which are not ‘fast food’ but are nearly ready to eat and healthy - tinned and frozen fish and vegetables, for instance, don’t have the added sugars, fats or salts.

Just remember not to sacrifice your health for the sake of an extra five minutes in the kitchen.

More direct object pronouns Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE are moving forward with our explanation of ‘direct object pronouns’, so let’s take as our starting point the sentence we looked at last week: ‘El niño lee el libro’. - The boy reads the book.

‘El niño lo lee’. - ‘The boy reads it’.

In English we have several direct object pronouns and here they are: me, you, him, her, it, us, them We need to be clear in our minds that we are talking about object pronouns specifically here, because two of them are also used in English as subject pronouns (you and it) and one of them doubles up as a possessive adjective (her).

If you didn’t understand that last sentence don’t worry too much, just remember that some of these words can have other uses.

We tend to complain when Spanish words have duplicate uses and meanings, but in fact English is just as bad, it’s just that we don’t have to think about it so we

don’t usually realise.

We can illustrate the use of these words in English with the verb ‘love’. For example ‘I love you’ (‘I’ is the subject pronoun, and ‘you’ is the object pronoun). ‘You love me’ (‘You’ is the subject pronoun, ‘me’ is the object pronoun).

From this example you can see that the word ‘you’ has two uses, as subject and object, whereas ‘I’ has to change to ‘me’ when used as an object.

You can go through all the different permutations yourselves to see how all of these words work, so I won’t clog up the rest of this article with examples. You may find it has the added benefit of making you feel all

This sentence demonstrates what we have learnt so far. That is, that a direct object pronoun replaces the direct object (the thing that directly receives the action of a verb). In other words, in English ‘it’ replaces ‘the book’.

We also saw that in Spanish, the equivalent of it goes in front of a verb.

There are in fact three instances when the direct object pronoun can be linked to the end of a verb itself, but we will look at those later.

I would be lying to you if I didn’t admit straightaway that there are one or two complications here regarding the difference between people and things in the third person, but that deserves a longer explanation and will have to wait for now.

In the meantime, here are some simple examples for you to cogitate on over the next week.

The man with nine lives

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com YOU only live once; live it properly and once is enough but I decided to add other lives to mine. As a consequence I accompanied my African friend as she made her epic odyssey from African kraal to university followed by much travel.

I lived life in a Fijian idyll, enjoyed a ringside seat at the Pacific region’s best boxing bouts, and lived in Franco Spain when a visa was required of Britons wishing to live here.

One doesn’t need to experience reincarnation to suffer in war-torn Hamburg, explore shipwrecks, or share the bedroom of one of the most prolific hookers on the Spanish Riviera. My key to living extra lives was to use my ghost-writing skills to help those who have great stories to tell. I currently have 52 books with my name on their covers.

I did learn that it is impossible to be unemotional when sharing the lives of others. The best compli-

Many people experienced traumas that are gut-wrenching in their telling. As I described ordeals suffered by an Irish youngster in a

remote penal institution there were times when I had to put my pen to one side and take time to compose myself.

There’s an upside too for there’s not many who stayed in Sammy Davis Junior’s hotel suite in Las

Getting one’s book on conventional or online bookshelves can be problematic. Publishers are reluctant to add new authors whilst Amazon rarely delivers.

DIY (Distribute it Yourself) did bring success, a method further enhanced by the onset of cost-effective, low-cost, book printing. It is now possible to have printed as few as 200 books at less than one third of each book’s selling price.

What do I do with the books delivered by the carrier? My practice was to visit stores, not necessarily bookshops, and offer reasonable quantities at 35 per cent discount on a sale-or-return basis.

Shearman’s world

Spanish grass is as durable and flexible as the skilled craftsmen that work it and turn it into superb and highly desirable products that not only have a purpose but are aesthetically pleasing to have in the home.

Spanish grass or esparto is one of the products that made the world go round for thousands of years and has almost disappeared today. But the old skills are still remembered in Spain’s only esparto grass museum in Murcia besides skilled craftsmen keeping this artisan work alive.

Esparto is a type of grass that grows wild on the hillsides all along the Spanish coast and its tough, flexible fibres were used from ancient times to make shoes, belts, baskets, fans, paper, mats and thousands of other things.

Historically one of the most important things made from esparto was the rope used by sailing ships.

Decades ago hundreds of people were employed in the esparto industry. The first stage is to gather the grass on the steep Spanish hillsides - no easy task especially in the baking summer months.

MANY USES: Esparto is tough and flexible.

A palillo, a metal spiked hand loop, was used to pull the fibres from the ground and wrap them together.

Next, it was stacked in heaps to dry out in the sun and then soaked in large ponds for up to 40 days to allow for

chemical changes in the fibre. After this it was pulled out and stacked to dry again.

Now it was ready to be pulverised using a huge wooden mallet over a tree stump or two timber beams which were belt driven in a factory.

The next stage was to comb the fibres through with metal rakes, a process that proved hazardous to the health of the workers as the airborne fibres caused espartosis.

The fibres were then spun into threads and woven together into bands, then spun into 15 metre length cable ropes for shipping.

Esparto today has been replaced by modern materials like plastics to make the most of heavy industry products. In Murcia craftsmen still keep this process alive by making household products.

The name espadrille is French and comes from the Catalan name for the shoes, espardenya, the name for esparto, or Spanish grass. There are still shops in the Basque Country making espadrilles that go back a century. Traditionally espadrilles are worn by men and women. In Aragón espadrilles are called alpargatas.

WITH all the bad weather that hit Europe thanks to hurricane Helene blowing her top in mid Atlantic, and her big sister Florence causing mayhem in the Carolinas, it reminded me of my own encounter with another one of the family 45 years ago.

That one’s name was Alice.

Hurricanes rarely hit Bermuda with full intensity because their favourite hunting grounds are much further south centred in the Caribbean and often venting their full force on the US South Eastern seaboard.

However they do on occasion come dangerously close to Bermuda and in 1973 a hurricane warning was issued for Wednesday, July 4.

The eye-wall of the storm was due to brush the islands during the early evening and I was determined to get a good look at it.

As it happened I had a dinner invita-

tion that evening with a colleague and his wife, which gave me time to first ride out to the North Shore and watch Alice pass by before returning to Hamilton where they lived.

Big mistake.

This may not have been one of the ‘big ones’, but the sight of Alice as she approached was pretty awesome. I should have kick started my Suzuki right there and skedaddled, but I wanted to see just a little bit more before I departed.

But these things travel fast and bef o r e I k n e w i t I w a s w h i p p e d o ff m y bike and all hell broke loose as I was blown to the ground and felt parts of my clothing being ripped away as I scrabbled to find a handhold somewhere.

If somebody had told me years earlier that one day I would be in Bermuda having my clothes ripped off by someone called Alice, I would have said: ‘bring it on!’ But this foreplay was a bit too rough for me.

Goodness knows how I managed to retrieve my bike but I did and eventually, having started the damn thing, I rode a squiggly and hazardous line to m y f r i e n d ’s h o u s e w h e r e I a r r i v e d some time later.

His door opened to a forlorn figure wearing a shirt that was ripped from throat to waist and hanging off; muddy chinos with holes in both knees, and with hair standing straight up in gooey rods. - clutching a miraculously intact - bottle of red wine.

A CROW in Knaresborough has been filmed greeting visitors, ‘Y’alright love?’ in a Yorkshire accent. (An African Grey parrot is also a good mimic.)

Whatever the weather The British have an obsession about the weather. The joke says that the rest of the world has a climate, but Britain has weather! Well, it’s about to change, all over the world, and sooner than predicted.

Their conclusion: that by the end of this century there would be an ice-free summer Arctic Ocean, something that had not

happened for thousands of years.

We would still have the same things to moan about: wind - rain heat and cold, but the intensity and length would become much more severe and persistent.

Now, the same committee states Arctic ice is melting more rapidly, causing temperatures to soar, permafrost to thaw and glaciers to melt,

which could have a worldwide effect on the jet stream and polar vortex, especially on the rise in sea levels all over the globe. But, more serious and frightening, these changes to the climate predicted originally for the end of this century will have occurred by the year 2040.

They predict that, at that point the effect of our climate change policy will be nil: our climate will be irrevocably, permanently and catastrophically changed.

This will touch the lives of every living thing on this planet. Predictions show that the whole length of the New Jersey coastline - south of New York to below Atlantic City - and much of the whole United States eastern coastline will be below sea level.

Venice, London, Shanghai together with thousands of small (and some large) islands will be submerged.

If this sounds like an Armageddon scenario, it may very well be. But remember this has probably happened many times over the millennia and our species has adapted and survived.

WHENEVER you think of a police dog, you immediately conjure up images of an Alsatian or a German Shepherd. So you can imagine the reaction when the Local Police in Murcia were accompanied on one of their patrols by a..Chihuahua.

The patrol car came across the toy dog after it was wandering around lost in the Murcia village of El Puntal. They took pity on him and rather than leave him all alone in the middle of the night, they picked him up and placed him on the

back seat of the car where he spent the rest of the patrol looking out of the window.

Needless to say, he also attracted the attention of other motorists and pedestrians as they spotted the cute and small dog surveying his manor.

However, he didn’t stay lost for long as, thanks to the co-operation of the Zoonoses Centre in Murcia, the Local Police were able to find where the little Chihuahua lived and reunite him with a very grateful family.

S.P.A.M.A. spamasafor@gmail.com Animal shelter at bursting point SPAMA is an animal shelter based in Gandia on the northern Costa Blanca on the beautiful Costa de Azahar.

They are a registered Spanish charity and the shelter currently has close to 450 animals, made up of 300 dogs and 120 cats.

However, like so many shelters and other homes up and down the Costa Blanca, they are overcrowded and full to bursting point.

Their other problem is that being outside the popular tourist and residential areas, it’s very difficult to find people that are able to offer their help.

A large number of the dogs in the SPAMA kennels are around five to eight years old, with many of them never knowing life outside of the animal shelter.

NEW HOME: Some of the dogs have been in kennels for many years.

They’ve never experienced the real world and simply want a loving home with an owner that will treat them as one of the family.

SPAMA has continued to fight against the law to put down animals after a certain period of time... they believe every animal has the right to live.

THE latest gathering of the Montgo Golf Society (MGS) played a Stableford competition sponsored by Sue Burman and Dennis Hammond.

As is normal for this time of the year, the early October weather was perfect for golf.

However, the Oliva Nova course continues to be in a disappointing condition with three temporary greens and scarified fairways. There is a great deal of work going on, but it’s still quite frustrating for the members who have become accustomed to the best presented course in the area.

There was a later start than normal with the Levante GS’s Captain’s Day ahead on the course, but the Society managed to get round in

the regulation four and a half hours... so no complaints.

Given the condition of the course, the scoring in

general was average with the exception of three players who all came in with 40 points.

After using the count-

back, the final order was: 1st - Gordon Gleeson, 2nd - Sally Burrowes and 3rd - Richard Fox. Luckily for them, there

were no handicap adjustments in this competition due to the state of the course.

Nearest the Pins: Wolfgang Schuster and Ian Bonser.

At the presentation after the competition it was great to see founding member Jan Jones back, and with the great news that she has had the sign off from her doctor to start playing again, having been laid low with a bad back since early in the year. The Society look forward to having her out with them again in the very near future.

Next week the MGS will be holding the annual Captain ‘v’ Vice-Captain match.

Marina Alta Golf Society

THE recent Marina Alta Golf Society (MAGS) day saw 19 members and five welcome guests attending the Oliva Nova Golf Course. All were looking forward to a great day of golf and weren’t disappointed with the weather being close to perfect; a warm sun with a light wind.

The group was made up of three women member players and 21 men in a single division of competition.

On a course still trying to return to its previ-

ous prime condition and using three temporary greens, the MAGS held a Stableford competition with the following results, with the first three places decided on countback: 1st - Jim Mitchell (38 points off 23), 2nd Faisal Awda (38 off 24), 3rd - Richard Delaney (38 off 30), and 4th - Val McVeigh (36 off 33).

Pego Golf Society A TOTAL of 37 players turned out for a Singles Stableford Competition that took place against a background of a cold and overcast day and a course still in a poor condition.

Two guest players - Michael Jones and Stephen Hill were warmly welcomed and the overall results for the day were as follows: Division One: 1st - Malcolm Harrison (39 points), 2nd Brendan Young (38) and 3rd - Steve Boyes (37).

Division Two: 1st - Jim Hayward (35), 2nd - Patrick Lynch (35) and 3rd - Rob Westlands (34).

Nearest the Pins: Steve Patton (Hole 5) and Peter Rapley (16) with 3m and 2.9m short of the target respectively.

Nobody was able to guess the ‘Balls in the Water’ correctly (70) and a card draw saw John Nicol walk off with the money.

There was only one ‘two’ on the day. It belonged to Brian Barden with what many considered to be a very lucky and annoying putt.

Next week is Captain’s Day, a big day in the calendar and there is a full house for the Captain’s Team against the Vice Captain’s Team. All players are asked to be at the club no later than 7.45am for breakfast. There will also be plenty to eat on the course provided by Anne Grethe and Elizabeth Grin... and there will be the usual buffet lunch afterwards.

The BBC anniversary celebrations LAST Sunday was Founder’s Day at the Benitachell Bowls Club (BBC), and a celebration which takes place every year.

This year was special as it was the 30th anniversary, and the day was graced by 96 bowlers that included more than welcome guests from Javea Green, Bonalba, El Cid, Calpe and Finca Guila.

The weather was perfect and the bowling took place all day with the 96 bowlers being split into two groups. Each team played three games of two wood trips over 10 ends. A long, and thoroughly enjoyable day, culminating in a win for Jackie Logan from BBC and Jon and

Pat Pittaway from Javea Green; the runners up were Helen Baxter and Neville Allen (BBC) and Stuart Beatie (El Cid).

The early evening had live music/singing from the highly recommended Ian Hunt, along with the tapas and drinks for 110 people. The Founder Members who managed to attend were namely Mollie Mogg, Harry and Brenda Winfield, Phil Davies, Jack Pymm and Mick Adams.

A presentation was made of Honorary Membership to Cynthia and Reg Cutts and Mike Parry, who have been with the club for 25 years and during that time contributed many hours to its smooth running.
