Resort is rocked by Soul Man’s death

By Tara Rippin BENIDORM is in shock after the sudden death of one of Costa Blanca’s mostloved entertainers, Lee Wayne Bench, aka Scott Bench Taylor.

Lee, who performed mainly soul and Motown songs at bars and clubs all over the resort, died suddenly aged 43.

It’s unclear how Lee died, and moving tributes have been pouring in from family, friends and fans, rocked by the news.

Friend Alison Cox, wrote on Facebook: ‘Sleep tight my angel. I’m stuck for words of what to say and how I feel.

You became one of my dearest and closest friends. My heart goes out to Hayley and your boys at this very sad time.’

Lorraine Banner said: “We had the privilege of Lee performing at my daughter’s wedding six years ago. In the words of that phenomenal movie he was ‘the greatest showman.’

She added: “Another fond memory I have of Lee was when he performed along with others for a fundraiser to raise money for my nephew’s school. The place was packed and so much money was raised. He even took his

Tina Sommerville added: “A very sad loss for Benidorm.”

While Carol Guiney added: “So sorry about Scott he was

a lovely guy I am still in shock, had the pleasure of meeting him when he started out in Benidorm, he will be missed by everyone RIP Soul Man.” Paul Bell said: “Seen this lad loads of times. Very talented and raised the bar in every way. So sad to hear he has passed on, will be missed in Benidorm that’s for sure. xx” A cremation was expected to take place at Villajoysa Tanatorium, yesterday (Thursday).

A

MAN has been arrested in Benidorm after stealing mobility scooters.

He was caught with a master key that enabled him to start up the vehicles which he stole from the lobby areas of hotels. He then went on to sell the scooters.

There are hundreds of the iconic ‘Madge Mobiles’ (named after the popular character in the TV series ‘Benidorm’) driving around and it is one of the biggest and most profitable businesses in the area.

The investigation got underway seven months ago when the National Police began receiving a higher than usual amount of reports of scooters being stolen, both from the companies that rent them out and individual owners. In total, there were 17 mobility scooters stolen with a value of €23,000.

Black spot action demanded ONE of the most dangerous roads in the Marina Alta Region has been reported to the Alicante Provincial Government by local political group Podemos.

The CV-740 that links Javea, Benitachell and Teulada is a well-known black spot, with figures showing that between 2012 and June 2017 there were 33 accidents and 11 deaths.

A major concern about this road is a stretch between km8 and km9 where there is no hard shoulder or pavement area. Along this section alone, there

have been 11 accidents and three fatalities during the five-year period.

According to reports, Podemos have asked for an ‘urgent widening’ of the CV-740, and that until something is done the road continues to pose a serious risk to drivers, and especially cyclists.

The Spanish Traffic Department (DGT) describes a black spot as one where there have been three or more fatalities during a year, separated by a minimum of 100 metres. This certainly applies to the case of the CV-740.

THE ‘electric accelerator’ has been depressed, and the municipality of San Vicente del Raspeig will soon be seeing a series of electric vehicles, backed up with a number of new recharging points.

The plans were announced after a motion from the PSOE was approved at a recent plenary council meeting and the commitment was made to acquire a

number of electric vehicles to replace the current fleet that uses petrol and diesel.

In addition, in order to obtain licences for new buildings, it will be a requirement for them to have the basic equipment installed to enable the recharging of electric vehicles, and the council will be looking at a number of tax subsidies to encourage this work.

Robbers caught NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a couple who allegedly committed a number of robberies from a moped. Their modus operandi was always the same as the 24 and 38-year-old pair would approach their intended victims in Alicante and Benidorm and pull someone’s handbag from them.

According to reports, during three of the assaults the victims needed medical attention after they fell to the ground; such was the force involved.

The moped riders were identified thanks to CCTV cameras, and when arrested were found to have more than €600, four mobiles, jewellery, and 42 National Lottery tickets stolen from their victims.

FTER several minor ceiling collapses in the Marina Baixa Hospital in Villajoyosa in less than 18 months, a programme of emergency work is now underway to replace 10,000m2 of plaster. The cost is estimated to be €600,000.

Both members of staff and patients had complained about the continuous poor state of repair in the hospital’s corridors, operating theatres and offices and were concerned that it would only be a matter of time before another incident if nothing was done.

The work began last weekend (and ends tomorrow (Saturday)) and was concentrated on the first floor where most of the out-patient departments are located. Around 1,000 patients were affected, although they had their appointments transferred to other health centres in Benidorm or La Nucia.

Building site death A 32-YEAR-OLD worker has been killed in Alicante during construction works on a supermarket expansion.

It happened at 11am on Monday morning in the building on Calle Catedratico Soler, and according to reports the man’s death was caused by a falling block of concrete on the construction site. Despite the efforts of paramedics from SAMU, who performed CPR on the victim, the man was declared dead at the scene.

National Police have been investigating the possible causes of the tragic accident.

Time to slow down

POOR STATE: Villajoyosa Hospital suffered several ceiling collapses.

AFTER a request from the mayor of San Juan de Alicante, Jaime Albero, the Ministry of Public Works will finally slow down speeding motorists as they pass through Santa Faz. The addition of speed bumps is especially welcomed along the 1.3 kilometre stretch of straight road now that the Lo Romero School will be temporarily located in the area. There will also be a number of pedestrian crossings placed along the road that is a well-known accident black spot.

Fake trade affects local economy

ENIDORM’S Independent Trade Association (AICO) is blaming the proliferation of shops that allegedly sell fake goods as one reason for a fall in income during this summer.

Their feelings were passed over to Benidorm’s mayor, Toni Perez, and Councillor Ana Pellicer at a recent meeting to discuss the problem that is concentrated in the Rincon de Loix area of the tourist centre.

Just under a year ago, AICO called for a meeting with the Guardia Civil, National and Local Police to coordinate the activity of the three bodies to fight against the practice of selling coun-

AICO are also asking the council to take the next step and revoke the opening licences in those businesses that receive complaints

about alleged selling of fake items. Some have been reported up to 13 times and yet they are still going unpunished.

A spokesperson for Benidorm Council explained that they are intensifying the investigations into the shops that have been reported but said they can do no more as it’s out of their remit.

No laughing matter THREE people working in a clinic in Teulada were evacuated from the building after a leak of helium gas. According to reports, there was an 80 per cent concentration of the gas in some parts, which had come from a rupture of one of the covers of the air-conditioning system.

Firefighters came from both Denia and Benissa, and after they fully ventilated the entire building a technician repaired the fault.

Theatre contract stopped JAVEA Council has run out of patience with a building company and has begun to terminate the contract for the building of the municipal theatre and auditorium.

According to reports, the original works began nine months ago, but all there is to show for it is a large hole.

The contract was for €2.4 million

but the contractor, Joca, then allegedly demanded more money so he could reinforce the structure with anti-earthquake measures.

The council will shortly be deciding whether to launch a new tender for the project or award it to the company who came second in the original one, who had 16 months to complete the building.

Fire under control FIREFIGHTERS spent almost an hour in bringing a forest fire under control in the area around Sella. The fire broke out around 5pm in the afternoon and affected around 250m2.

Because of the difficult terrain and location of the fire, a helicopter and two water-carrying aircraft were used to back up the four fire engines which came from Benidorm and Relleu.

Clinics to open for more hours the majority not open until 9pm. This often means that the local doctor ’s surgery is full with people that could be going elsewhere.

If everything is agreed and goes to plan, the mea-

sures will be implemented in the spring of 2019... although many doctors have asked for it to coincide with the traditional outbreak of flu toward the end of the year instead.

There are 59 clinics

across the Alicante Province, with those in Denia, Orihuela and Torrevieja already opening at 3pm.

The rest will shortly be joining them and bringing an extra six hours of medical cover to the areas.

SPAIN’S Minister of Health is committed to standardising the opening hours of clinics across the country.

These do not affect hospitals but those where the less serious illnesses and injuries are treated.

And so, in an attempt to take the pressure off the GP services, these will now open at 3pm in the afternoon and will directly benefit patients in Alicante, Elche and the Marina Baixa.

Empty vessels mystery

ANOTHER wave of migrant boats arrived at different points along the Alicante coast over the weekend, with one each landing in Alfaz del Pi and Calpe. However, in the case of the latter, nothing is known of those who may have been in the boat as it was found empty.

Two people were discovered in the vessel which was found on the rocky area of the Albir lighthouse.

Including those who arrived in Torrevieja, a total of 59 people have been intercepted across the Alicante Province in the space of one week.

Dramatic cliff rescue

A 72-YEAR-OLD man needed to be rescued by a helicopter after suffering from a panic attack on the Cala Llebeig de Benitachell.

According to reports, the German national was making his way along the cliff route with a group of other hikers, when all of a sudden began to experience signs of vertigo and ended up frozen to the spot unable to move.

The alarm was raised by one of the guides from the local Tourist Office, and once the man was evacuated he was taken to Denia Hospital.

Solidarity march

APPROXIMATELY 200 people took part in the Solidarity March held in Teulada-Moraira in honour of World Alzheimer’s Day and the culmination of a week of activities. The AFA in the municipality organised a number of courses for carers as well as a series of informative lectures. The day-centre opened a number of information points for anyone who wanted to find out about Alzheimer’s.

Videogamers joy

No hiding place for drugs

MORE than 800 people have taken part in the La Nucia Technological Party. Those attending were able to get involved in a number of different activities, with the most popular being videogame championships.

It’s the fifth time the event has been held in the La Nucia Institute’s gymnasium, and lasted for 15 hours non-stop from 8am last Sunday morning.

Both young people and adults alike had access to their own monitor, keyboard and controls - alongside fast broadband connection - and enjoyed a whole day of video games with their fellow enthusiasts.

by Glenn Scott NATIONAL POLICE have arrested a 58year-old man in Alicante for alleged drug trafficking offences.

The man was caught with seven kilos of cannabis hidden in a space he’d made behind the car’s dashboard where the airbag would usually be found. The only way to access the drugs was via the vehicle’s multimedia system.

According to a police report, in a later search of the man’s property, the police also found more than four kilos of speed which was already stored and packaged waiting to be sold. It is understood one kilo of the speed was stored in liquid.

Drone finds missing Costa Blanca migrants

by Darren Parmenter FTER a search that lasted all night, Benidorm’s Local Police have found three missing migrants from a boat which was found on the coast at Serra Gelada... the hidden stretch of beach that leads to Albir.

According to reports, the trio were found at first light in the nearby rocky park area and were the remaining members of the nine who arrived in a small boat during Sunday.

It is understood that they were located thanks to the use of drone technology and following their detention were taken to the headquarters of the National Police in the centre of the municipality.

100s get on bikes AROUND 300 cyclists of all ages took part in La Nucia’s ‘Bike Day, Car Free Day, Smoke Free Day.’ This free-to-enter initiative saw people ride through the centre of the old town, not in a race but in a demonstration of a healthy and environmentally friendly transport. The event was part of a wider ‘2018 European Mobility Week’ that aimed to promote more sustainable methods of transport, such as cycling.

No way to cross BENISSA Council has supported a request from a local resident to create a special access point under the new by-pass planned for the municipality. The road will see an end to one of the N-332’s remaining traffic hold ups as it passes through the town, but a downside is a lack of a pedestrian crossings.

Industrial accident results in amputations

FOUR workers have needed to have their hands amputated following a horrific accident in a factory based in the Valencian municipality of Naquera.

According to reports, a 20-ton hydraulic press fell on the workers, causing serious injuries that resulted in amputations of fingers and hands. It’s not known at this stage what caused the accident in a metal stamping company in the Els Vents Industrial Estate.

The hands of two of the workers were trapped, with two others also affected, and were released with the help of firefighters using forklift trucks.

Two of the men injured - aged 25 and 55 - had several fingers amputated from one hand and were taken by ambulance to the Intermutual de Levante Hospital and the La Fe Hospital in Valencia.

The other two - both women and aged 30 and 46 - also suffered from severe shock and the loss of a hand in the accident.

Crops under threat from new pests I

NCREASES in temperatures, h u m i d i t y, C O 2 emissions, drought conditions, flooding and lack of water quality have now been joined by new pests as threatening the agriculture sector.

The warning comes from the Valencian Institute of Agriculture Research (IVIA) in a report that forecasts for each degree increase in temperature; there may be losses of between 10 and 25 per cent of crops.

The rises change the metabolism of insects which contribute to the frequency of reproduction. This resulted in a number of citrus and apple trees in the area being severely affected.

RED SPIDER MITE: Attracted to hotter conditions.

In addition, insects that are usually prevalent in dry and arid climates have appeared in the Valencian Community, with the clearest example being that of the red spider m i t e ( Te t r a n y c h u s u r ticae) which attack or-

anges and lemons.

The agriculture sector is looking at ways of solving the issues in an industry that is worth €2,000 million annually, contributes to 5 per cent o f G D P, a n d e m p l o y s 100,000 people.

Bridge demolition plans ORXETA Council has been demanding a solution for some time to put an end to one of the most dangerous traffic points in the municipality; the bridge that crosses the River Sella.

There is barely room for two vehicles and the ambitious plans include its demolition and rebuilding... a project that will take at least three months. This will mean that people will have to take a detour through Finestrat to reach Villajoyosa, and will affect the 800 inhabitants of Orxeta that need to travel to use schools and hospitals and extend their daily journey by up to 20 minutes.

The budget for the work is €520,000 and is expected to get underway at the end of October.

LAST week the 3C’s (Chaps, Chatter and Coffee) group celebrated their Group Leader, Geoff Mitchell’s 90th birthday with ‘Tiramisu’ and Champagne.

Geoff has run the group for over six years, and the members think it’s the best group that they’ve had, so a big thank you and many happy returns were wished.

The group meet at Tio Leo Café in Albir, every Thursday at 10.30am.

Javea’s market vacancies

JAVEA Council has put out to tender the vacant positions in the municipal market. At present, there are eight 10-year spots available each with a cost of €1,855.96.

These are broken down into six individual pitches, and two double pitches.

The closing date to apply is October 25, and those applying will be given extra points if the person is unemployed, offering a diverse suggestion for the pitch, or is willing to spend more than €3,000 in upgrading the pitch.

Mayor chosen to continue

JOSE CHULVI has been confirmed as the PSPV candidate for the position of mayor of Javea for the third time. The current mayor has been the only person presented for next May’s elections and confirms a provisional decision announced as early as last April.

Before the announcement, Chulvi said that the local PSPV group wants to continue with the “confidence and trust” of the local people in their programme of change that began in 2011, which put transparency and improvements of local services and infrastructure as a priority.

Funding for women THANKS to funding of €60,000 from the Erasus project, the municipality of Pedreguer will become a centre for European women’s sport. It’s one of only three that has been selected across Spain, and the initiative will promote equal opportunities through the sport of basketball, with the collaboration of the Pedreguer Basketball Club.

During 2019, four events will be organised in each of the municipalities taking part that will also see a number of courses aimed at women in sport and encouraging more participation.

Boats no danger THE previous fears that the high number of boats using the Marina Alta could be affecting significant amounts of the posidonia seaweed have been resolved in a recent study.

The project, coordinated by the University of Alicante, found that there is compatibility between the boats and the underwater plants and no damage has been done as a result of the number of vessels. Javea, especially in Cala Blanca to Cala Sardinera, Cala El Pom to Cap Negre and the stretch of coast from Cala Granadella, are some of the most popular areas with around 155 boats per day choosing to moor there.

TO c e l e b r a t e t h e 1 0 0 t h a n niversary of the RAF, leaders of the U3A Art and History Group decided to organise a special talk for U3A members.

The lecture was, as usual, at the La Senieta Theatre in Moraira and members of the Royal Air Force Association had arranged a set of flags associated with the RAF to be displayed on the stage.

Brian Nichols, who organised and started this very successful group 10 years ago with the help of other members of the Committee, gave the lecture.

Before Brian spoke there was a ceremony during which retired RAF pilot and Wing Commander Colin McNae presented the RAF Association Flag to retired Group Captain Robert Hunt who then placed the flag

Approximately 100 members then enjoyed Brian’s talk which commenced with some of the history of how flying first started with the famous Wright brothers and their Kitty Hawk in 1904.

He then covered the introduction of the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, which preceded the formation of the Royal Air Force in 1918, and then covered in some detail the famous Battle of Britain.

Following Brian’s talk the members then watched a very interesting film which included almost all aspects of the Battle of Britain and

featured original footage of the battles between the Spitfires and Hurricanes of the RAF and the opposing German forces.

At the end of the lecture members joined together in the local park for drinks of cava and wine to celebrate the completion of 10 years of the U3A History and Art Group.

UNIQUE: You’ll see the difference at Javea’s Craft Fair. (File image) WHAT more could you ask for? A beach promenade, lovely views to the port and the mountains, a wide choice of sea food tapas and a small but select craft fair.

If that sounds like an ideal combination to you, you should go to the Javea Port on October 12, 13 and 14.

The local shopkeepers’ association has once again organised the Mar de Tapas festival and, for the fourth year running,

this is combined with a typical AMATA craft fair.

The regional craft association AMATA carefully selects the participants and you will see the difference! Everything is made by the people on the stalls, people who have decided to spend their lives making objects that please themselves and which they hope will please others.

On the same weekend the bars and restaurants of Jávea Port hold a Mar de Tapas weekend. You

buy a set of tickets at a stall next to the Craft Fair, and then spend a convivial hour or more sampling various tapas taken with a drink or two here and there.

The opening hours of the fair are 11am to 11pm (Friday is a national holiday in Spain) but will close earlier on Sunday.

The Tapas festival runs from Friday afternoon until Sunday lunchtime.

Mission impossible PEOPLE wanting to use the TRAM service from the Marina Alta to Alicante are now finding it a virtual ‘mission impossible.’ Line 9 has been beset by a number of planned and emergency works that have required users to rely on a connecting bus service to get them to their desti-

nations. As from Wednesday, passengers travelling from Denia, La Xara, Gata, Teulada or Benissa to Alicante now have to use two buses and three trains to get from their A to B. The extra journey is due to the work on the viaduct in Campello.

HERE’S a statistic that sent my eyebrows into the stratosphere: Spain is the fifth largest paper consumer in the EU behind Germany, Italy, the UK and France.

Only the fifth? Given the enormous pile of documents that cluttered my desk last week, I would have thought that Spain consumes more paper than any other country on the planet.

The pile started out about an inch thick when I was asked for a stack of information needed for a residencia application for my husband Marcus. (I applied for and received my residence permit around six years ago.)

In the pile were bank statements going back two years, two 20-page ‘personal relationship agreements’ that Sabadell handed us when I changed my personal account to a joint one, a health insurance policy, copies of our wedding certificates and passports, tax documents, birth certificates and our padrons.

‘Well,’ I thought, ‘that’s everything covered.’ Then the phone rang. It was the advisor handling our appli-

I went onto Cigna’s website, and actually managed to find the policy in Spanish. Without checking its length I hit the print button. Four minutes later about 50 pages spewed out of my LaserJet. A

minute later it began billowing smoke.

In a blind panic I shut it down. An hour later I resumed printing until the job was done.

The document ran to over 100 pages - an amount of paper that proved far too challenging for my high-end stapler, now completely buggered.

I handed the pile, now around

five inches thick, to our advisor.

She nodded approvingly at all the documentation, but frowned when she began reading the policy document. ‘Nah, we won’t be needing this after all,’ she said.

If her office had a carpet, I would have chewed it to bits.

With all the paperwork in order, we set off for the police station last Wednesday. The copper we saw

seemed happy enough with all the documents presented and was on the verge of giving Marcus his residencia when he suddenly paused to ask whether I had Spanish residence.

‘Sure,’ I replied, and handed him a copy of my residencia. This was rejected because I had ‘illegally’ encapsulated it. Undaunted, I produced the original that wasn’t sandwiched in plastic.

This too was rejected because, according to the cop, it had ‘expired’ and that we would both have to return to complete the process of getting our residencias.

If the police station was carpeted, I would have… oh, never mind.

REDUCED: Students asked to cut back on plastic rubbish.

New term... new challenge THE University of Alicante is about to do its best towards the current push to reduce the use of plastics.

Students that have just started the 2018/19 academic year have enough challenges, but they’ve additionally been given the task to cut down on plastic throughout the university campus.

The initiative will see three areas: reduction of the consumption of plastics and packaging, increase in the efficiency of plastic waste recycling and finally, an improvement in the awareness and individual responsibilities.

There will be a specific focus on food pack-

aging and drinks containers that account for the largest volume of plastics consumed.

Other plastic products such as plastic bags, office supplies and other miscellaneous items will also be monitored and controlled as necessary, but aren’t considered a serious issue.

To back up the scheme, there will be an increase in the number of water fountains throughout the campus, the use of reusable or biodegradable utensils, and the promotion of the use of multiuse containers.

One measure already implemented is in the coffee machines which no longer dispense plastic cups, but other biodegradable ones.

Spoils of the Moon

by Mark Shearman FOR those who don’t buy into conspiracy theories and actually think that NASA’s Apollo missions were real you may find this interesting.

Especially as this has been going on now for over 50 years since Neil Armstrong and the Apollo 11 crew returned to earth with a rich cargo of Luna rocks. In the following years a total of 270 Moon rocks were brought to earth to be used as gifts (many more were brought back for scientific study).

They were covered with a transparent thermoplastic (Lucite) creating a transparent ball and mounted on a plaque, which read: “These spherical globes contain fragments of a portion of rock from the Bata liner valley of the Moon. It is given as a symbol of human endeavour and carried with it the hope of the American people for a world of peace.”

A hundred and thirty-five were given away to governments around the world by the Nixon Administration as goodwill to all nations in celebration of man’s achievements. All 50 states were also given rocks; authentic Moon rocks are considered national treasures and cannot legally be sold in the US. Many are now locked away, probably in that big storage place from the Indiana Jones movie holding the Ark of the Covenant - the military-artifact storage building in Minnesota; there are an estimated 180 unaccounted for.

Moon rocks have been subjects of theft and forgery as well. Staff with access to

the rocks (wherever in the world they are) are not the only ones to have sold them.

Even heads of state have tried to sell them on the black market. This created the need for a special unit to conduct sting operations.

In 1998 undercover operatives of a US government agency investigated individuals and eventually arrested them for selling bogus Luna rocks. Senior Special Agent from NASA Joseph Gutheinz - the rock detective as he is referred to - oversaw the operations.

These con artists were lured in with a large advert asking if anyone was selling them and, in the process, actually found there to be a real Luna rock for sale from Honduras. It was a goodwill Moon rock that had fallen into private hands, and now came with a price tag of $5 million. The agents had to come up with the $5 million requested by the seller, so asked former Presidential Candidate and billionaire H Ross Perot to put up the money and he agreed. The seller was later arrested.

Gutheinz eventually taught graduate students at the University of Phoenix and challenged them to locate the Apollo 11 goodwill Moon rocks. Many Moon rocks have been found while others are now known to be missing, stolen, or destroyed.

Many years of investigations have brought Gutheinz closer to finding all the unaccounted-for souvenirs. Only recently rocks from Louisiana and Utah were found, leaving only those from Delaware and New York of the ones missing from US states left to be recovered, a goal set for July next year - the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.

Digital fire warnings DENIA Council will be installing a number of digital screens at the access points to Montgo, Jesus Pobre and Monte Pego.

The initiative was approved at a recent plenary council meeting and is part of a €2.3 million investment being made over the next 15 years that will see new signposts, warnings, firebreaks and other fire preventative measures.

There have been a number of fires in the area in the past 12 months, and the new signs will warn people when there are more significant risks.

Future water supply guaranteed CONTINUING water supplies are always a concern in many areas of the Costa Blanca, with the regular drought conditions and lowering reservoir levels often hitting the headlines.

However, two municipalities - TeuladaMoraira and El Poble Nou de Benitachell are thinking of the future of their supply and

have begun the process to expand the capacity of desalination plants.

The one located in Teulada-Moraira will increase from 5,000 to 11,000 cubic litres, with the other in Benitachell being able to store 5,800 cubic litres... up from 2,800.

The cost of the works, that are planned to guarantee the water supply in both munici-

palities for the next 10 years, will cost €4 million.

Making the announcement, the mayors of both municipalities - Carlos Linares and Josep Feminina - said that while supplies can be guaranteed, people must be aware that every drop counts and is why the awareness campaigns will continue.

Cancer prevention awareness A

LT E A’ S S o c i a l C e n t r e i s the location of a lecture this evening (Friday) talking about the subject of colorectal cancer.

Announced by Councillor Diego Martinez, the address will be given in the auditorium by Dr Teresa Revilla at 7.30pm, and is part of the continuing programme of public awareness about this particular form of cancer, in both prevention and detection.

The talks are aimed at getting the message across on how important it is to detect colon cancer at its earliest possible stage; the earlier it’s found the quicker it is to treat before it can advance further.

In addition to the talk, Councillor Martinez said that letters are being sent to the population between the ages of 50 and 69 to encourage them to get a test at the earliest possible opportunity.

GIVEN the success of the free guided tours organised by the Altea Council, it has announced a further programme covering October, November and December.

Councillor Anna Alvado said that the Tourism Department are delighted with the response they’ve had to the previous tours and by continuing them during the months leading up to Christmas aims to increase the off-season visitor numbers.

“With this initiative, there is something else to encourage tourism from people who would prefer to visit Altea in the autumn months when it’s slightly quieter and cooler,” said Alvado. However, the offer is there for anybody to join the free tours, even if they are local people who wish to discover a little more about where they live.

All the routes will leave from the Tourist Information Office in Altea in Paseo San Pedro except for the first one, this Sunday, that departs from the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

It is understood that the study will conclude in December 2018.

Subsidy for Calpe access road ALICANTE’S Provincial Council has approved a subsidy of €761,958 to go towards the work on ‘J Road, Section 1’ in Calpe. This is the stretch that will link the roundabout on the Avenida de la Generalitat with Gargasindi.

The opening of this section of the ‘J Road’ is vital to connecting traffic to and from the beach area of Calpe with the N332 without having to go through the centre of town as is currently the case.

The total budget for the works is just over €1 million, with Alicante contributing 75 per cent of the costs. The contract stipulates that the project must start before the end of this year and completed before December 1, 2019.

Back in February, Calpe Council acquired the remaining piece of land needed for the opening of the ‘J Road’ which will be renamed Avenide Felipe VI and connect Avenida Romania with the northern access road.

THE mayors of Seoul, Bilbao, Salla, Tarnos, Mondragon and representatives of dozens of other cities around the world reaffirmed commitments to promote alternative ways of producing goods and services through better practices at the launch of the Global Social Economy Forum (GSEF) in the Spanish city of Bilbao.

“Social economy is no longer merely an alternative,” said Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon at the Euskalduna Conference Centre in Bilbao. “It is a new movement towards solidarity and cooperation that is bringing about innovation and change.

All of us have the responsibility of solidarity and cooperation, to share experience and knowledge, and to create a society where everyone can lead better lives together.”

The GSEF was inaugurated in Seoul in 2014. The third forum of its kind, it has been hosted in Bilbao under the theme, ‘Social Economy and Cities: Values and Competitiveness for an Inclusive and Sustainable Local Development’, attracted some 1,700 representatives of cities and civil societies from more than 80 countries. Seoul has been the president of the

Spain is home to Mondragon Corporation, a success story in terms of the principles of social

THE Bank of Spain has revised down its predictions for the country’s economy in view of the continuing high unemployment levels - despite encouraging falls - government debt and political instability in Cataluña.

In addition, uncertainties in the foreign financial markets and rising oil prices have all contributed to the rethink.

According to reports, economists now predict that the economy will only grow at 2.6 per cent in 2018, which is one 10th lower than thought at first, and came a few days before the first anniversary after the controversial referendum in Cataluña.

The forecast for 2019 has also been dropped to 2.2 per cent, and predicted to be just 2 per cent in 2020.

However, despite the predictions, the overall and continuing levels of growth will help create jobs in the economy and bring unemployment down to 12 per cent by the end of 2020. The current rate is 15.28 per cent.

Researchers looking at the habits of workers found that one in eight never varied their mid-day meal.

Amongst the 2,000 workers questioned, ham sandwiches were the most popular choice for lunch followed by cheese and chicken sandwiches.

One fifth have something shop bought and one in 10 eat in the staff canteen.

Seven in 10 people said they eat the same thing day after day mainly because ‘it’s easy,’ while cheapness and simply following routine were also big factors.

Some pointers to a good diet THE Mediterranean diet has been talked about a lot as being why Spaniards generally enjoy good health and a long life.

But what is it and why does it help? Here we give you some pointers about the diet : • Use olive oil as your principal additional oil. It is rich in vitamin E, beta-carotene and monounsaturated acids that have cardio protective properties.

• Eat plant foods in abundance: fruits, vegetables, legumes, mushrooms and nuts. They are the main source of vitamins, minerals and fibre in our diets and give us at the same time, a lot of water.

They can also prevent cardiovascular diseases and some types of cancer.

• Bread and food from cereals (pasta and rice) should be part of the daily diet. They are essential for its carbohydrate composition and provide the energy for our daily activities.

• The less processed, fresh and seasonal foods are the most appropriate. This allows us to consume them at their best moment, both in terms of nutrient intakes

and for their aroma and taste.

• Consume daily milk products, mainly cheese and yoghurt. They are a good source of calcium, high quality protein, vitamin B2, retinol and vitamin D. • Red meat should be consumed in moderation and better as part of stews and other recipes.

Processed meats only in small amounts as an ingredient in sandwiches.

• Eat lots of fish, but eggs in moderation. Oily fish consumption is recommended at least once or twice a week because its fat has properties against cardiovascular diseases. Eggs contain high quality protein, fats and many vitamins and minerals, it is recommended to have three or four eggs a weeks as a substitute to meat.

• Fresh fruit should be the usual dessert. Sweets and pastries should be eaten occasionally.

• Water is the quintessential drink in the Mediterranean. Wine must be taken in moderation and with meals.

• Physical activity every day, because it is as important as eating properly to maintain health.

Direct object pronouns Basic Spanish for everyday needs

QUITE a few months ago I wrote a couple of articles about ‘direct object pronouns’, using as examples the words ‘lo’, ‘la’, ‘los’ and ‘las’ meaning ‘it’ and ‘them’.

We saw how they can link to the ends of verb infinitives to make up a longer word, like this: ‘Voy a cocinarlo’ (I’m going to cook it). ‘Quiero comprarlas’ (I want to buy them). At that stage I kept things simple in two ways. Firstly, we only looked at ‘it’ and ‘them’ and a v o i d e d ‘ m e , y o u , h i m , h e r, u s ’ a n d secondly, we stuck to examples with infinitives of verbs, where we were able to simply tack ‘lo, la, los, las’ onto the ends of the words.

Now that we’ve learnt a bit more about verbs, and particularly how to conjugate them (that is, change their endings) in the present tense, we

can now expand in these two directions. So, we are going to learn more direct object pronouns and also find out where they should go in sentences.

I would imagine this might take more than one article, as we are going to take this fascinating subject step by step and try and make sure no one gets left behind.

First and foremost then, let’s remind ourselves about what we are talking about. In other words, what does ‘direct object pronoun’ actually mean? To answer this question, let’s look at this sentence: ‘The boy reads the book’.

In this sentence boy is the subject

and book is the direct object, in other words the thing that receives the action of the verb ‘reads’. The word book can be replaced by the pronoun it, giving us the sentence ‘The boy reads it’. We would change a sentence in this way if we already knew what ‘it’ referred to. In English we call the words that replace direct objects in this way ‘direct object pronouns’.

One main difference between Spanish and English is in t h e w o r d o r d e r.

‘The boy reads the book’ in Spanish is ‘el

niño lee el libro’, with the same order as in English. However, when we say ‘the boy reads it’ we place the ‘lo’ in front of the verb, like this: ‘El niño lo lee’ (‘the boy it reads’).

Now the direct object might be a person rather than a thing. For example, this is how we would say ‘the bus leaves us in the square’. ‘El autobus nos deja en la plaza’ (‘The bus us leaves...’)

The direct object pronoun appears before the verb when that verb is what I call ‘live’, in other words it is a conjugated verb agreeing with the subject of the sentence (El autobus deja - third person singular form). The difference between this and the first examples, such as ‘voy a cocinarlo’ is that the ‘live’ or conjugated verb is the sentence is ‘voy’, whilst ‘cocinar’ is an unchanging infinitive form, to which object pronouns can be tacked on to the end.

So far, I think that is fairly simple, but there is rather a lot more to say about these direct object pronouns.

So if you do feel there are some big gaps, hold on tight and I will do my best to expand the subject next week, and quite possibly the week after as well!

Education - who needs it!

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com WE can all know god-gifted people who are experts on everything without their having studied any subject. Where is the need for experience or education when self-chosen experts have the answers to hand?

The economy is always a good place to start for these walking talking encyclopaedias. They know why Britain is broke and how it can be fixed. Needless to say, even a basic course in economics is unnecessary for their solution to Britain’s national debt.

Another discussion veered towards the revolution that toppled Imperial Russia in 1917 - 1922.

The cause and solution were freely given as was the reason for the collapse of the USSR 69 years later.

If you miss the news on BBC or ITV your friend can recall the BBC’s spin on world events so he can put you right on Syria, Libya and of course Russia. The refugee

crisis; soaring crime, Brexit, he has the glib solution or he accepts it; the matter is then closed.

Anyone can be an expert simply by conforming and never to question.

You’re not as clued up on the Second World War as you wish to be? The conformist has the answer because he watches The History Channel, which like media would never spin the narrative.

I recall a household name politician being heckled at an outdoor meeting. Turning towards the loudmouth, the speaker on the rostrum called out,: ‘You’re obviously well informed and have clearly read and und e r stood both

volumes of Das Kapital by Karl Marx?’

The foolish chap retorted that indeed he had done so. His smug grin evaporated when to the evident enjoyment of the crowd gathered he was informed that the boring tome was a one-volume book.

The sage is certain

to have unswerving trust in corporate and state-managed media.

This relieves him of the necessity of digging a little deeper, becoming better educated through selfeducation, of seeking an alternative take on history. It never seems to occur to him that all history is the propaganda of the victors.

The Achilles heel of the know-itall is their swift departure from the topic of discussion if challenged by the better informed. There will then be a superior flick of the wrist followed by the remark that the matter is closed.

The reason for this was ably explained by Friedrich Nietzsche: ‘People don’t want the truth because they don’t want their illusions destroyed.’

This leaves us with the problem of a country run by the unscrupulous playing to an audience of half-wits. The consequences are self-evident in the dire state of the nation.

The last nail in the coffin of a collapsing society is the conformist who refuses to recognise failure due to his fear of tackling it.

Building an NEW research has revealed that more people than ever are using sports nutrition products.

Once used only by athletes, research by Mintel, the world’s leading market intelligence agency, showed that almost three-in-10 Brits (27 per cent) use sports nutrition products such as protein bars, protein powders for a drink, energy bars and supplement capsules, tablets and sachets. The number rose to 39 per cent amongst those who regularly exercised more than once a week.

It is the UK’s young men who show the strongest use of sports nutrition products, with three-infive men (61 per cent) aged 1634 saying they use such products. Over one-in-three men (35 per cent) aged 16-34 said they exercised four times a week or more, compared to 26 per cent of women of the same age.

Toxic cocktail awaits retirement WE are all living longer, but the quality of that life is not as good, as unhealthy lifestyles now mean today’s youth can expect to spend their retirement in poor health.

Obesity, lack of exercise and smoking are cited as the main problems leading to what experts are calling a ‘toxic cocktail’ of back pain, diabetes and dementia.

With women expected to live to an average age of 83 and men until 79, people can expect to spend those last two decades suffering from poor health.

Public Health England said a report found only 57 per cent of English adults carry out the recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise and 29 per cent do less than half an hour.

Despite the popularity of these products, around half (48 per cent) of all Brits believe there is no need for extra protein in a balanced diet and a quarter of all those questioned admitted they never exercised.

IT was this week in 1883 that the Orient Express departed on its first official journey from Paris to Istanbul, although history does not record whether or not Monsieur Poirot was on the passenger list or indeed if there was a murder on board.

Now called the Simplon Orient Express, it still travels various routes across Europe, including the original Paris - Istanbul route.

It was always right there at the top of my bucket list - a list that never seems to diminish in size by the way - but four years ago we took the plunge and booked ourselves on this famous train.

It was a multiple whammy really, because the trip involved stays in Lakes Garda and Como, both of which were on the Princess’s own wish list; three days in Venice, and another one for me - a cruise - on the Cunard Queen Elizabeth.

The whole trip ticked a lot of boxes and temporarily reduced the size of my bucket list to just two foolscap pages.

by their personal stewards in their blue and gold livery, and shown to their compartments. It is like stepping back in time. True the compartments are compact but the art deco finish and workmanship is exceptional.

Also exceptional is the price of drinks with the cheapest bottle of wine around 30 quid - and that was a half bottle.

It was the only downside for us, but faded into insignificance against the rest of the experience.

The journey to Verona takes the best part of two days with an overnight on board. During dinner in the luxurious dining car, your steward converts the luxurious sofas in each compartment into twin bunks, one above the other, and there is even a cute little ladder to the top bunk with plush fabric covered rungs.

However, this did not prevent me from falling off the damn thing - twice.

Standard compartments do not have en-suite facilities and the toilet and shower area is at the end of each carriage. So, what with the jolting of the train and lots of liquid refreshment during dinner, it meant for me a stroll along the carriage at 2am.

Not wanting to bother dressing in case of encountering a fellow passenger on a similar mission, I wrapped a blanket around myself and made my uneasy way to the loo. So far, so good.

On the return leg, I inadvertently stepped on the trailing edge of the blanket and it flew off revealing a totally naked me. Luckily nobody was about except the Princess who had popped her head out of the compartment, wanting to photograph me wearing the blanket.

She says she is keeping that picture just in case I ever step out of line.

My fantasy dinner party

IN my long departed younger days there were three people I longed to have sit at my dinner table, or at least, ‘be a fly on the wall at one of theirs’: Winston Churchill, the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela.

I considered that these men were three of the most interesting and influential people and a stimulating dinner party would ensue.

Now, sadly, two are no longer with us so replacements must be found.

Just a short while ago, the Open Forum discussion group that I belong to in Jalon put down a similar question: ‘Which two people would you most like to ask to dinner?’

My choice was Joanna Lumley, (I have a had a crush on her since I don’t know when) and Dr Alice Roberts, whom I adore and not entirely for the fantastic way she explains some of the most arcane

problems in paleoarcheology!

Of the nine of us at the meeting, I was surprised that five others also voted for Joanna but none had even heard of Alice Roberts.

I shall add one more, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a South African Anglican Archbishop and theologian. A vociferous opponent of apartheid and a civil rights activist whose influence in South Africa during the post apartheid period was immense; his policy of ‘total forgiveness’ very likely prevented civil war for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace prize. He has been described as ‘the essence of being human’ - he is also an admirer of the Dalai Lama.

These four (plus myself of course) could, I believe, satisfy my craving for an evening of stimulating conversation, good food and excellent wine.

The Dalai Lama, representing so many people of his faith and calling, has had to accept a way of life quite different to that for which he was brought up to expect. But he has been an inspiration to not only his own acolytes all over the world, but to everyone with whom he comes into contact. He always looks happy,

that often displays such a lack of tolerance.

In the Guizhan province of Southern China, experts have just uncovered the fossil of a giant turtle. It is a real giant among turtles being rather larger then a double bed and dated to 228 million years old.

A most curious feature is that it has no shell. Perhaps the prototype of all turtles.

TAKING OFF: First flights on sale from UK to new airport in Spain

LAST Friday’s get-together of the Montgo Golf Society (MGS) saw them playing a medal competition for the MGS Decanter, sponsored by Neil Carter.

This week the course was sadly in a very poor state. Not only were the temporary greens still in play, but two of the fairways looked as though they had been rotovated.

They also had their tees changed after play had commenced on the 10th, and the first group was already on the green when they were informed that they had to restart on the first tee.

The MGS understand that Oliva are doing all in their power to repair the course, but some of the members’ patience is running a little low.

The MGS plan to write to Oliva Nova to see if there is a chance of compensation for its members as they have not had a fully functional course for over a month now.

Despite these difficulties the scores on the day were surprisingly good, with over half the field, albeit a small one, coming in with net 70’s.

A TOTAL of 36 players turned out for a Singles Stableford Competition at Oliva Nova Golf Club, and although the weather was beautiful the course was still in very poor condition.

The Society was pleased to welcome three guests, Larry Ryder, Thomas Britton and Peter Sturdy, and the results on the day were: 1st Division: 1st - Malcolm Wise (35 points off 12), 2nd - Andrew Harrison (35 off 19), 3rd - Mick Connolly (33 off 20) and 4th - Brian Barden (33 off 22).

The 19th Hole Golf Society A MUCH improved Lorca Golf Course was the venue for the 19th to play a Two-Division Stableford competition.

With the greens in their usual immaculate condition the biggest surprise was only one ‘2’ being recorded on the day, by Doug Birrell on the 10th.

The 1st Division was taken easily by an inform Mark Coffey with an astounding 41 points, leaving Doug Birrell and Brian Blythe to fight it out for the minor placings. Doug eventually winning on count-back after both scored 37 points.

The 2nd Division was a cake walk for Vaughan Williams who returned a commanding 39 points, which was 10 points clear of Pat Odwyer and Mike Palmer who finished second and third respectively.

Nearest the Pins: Hudson McGuffin (Holes 4 and 10), Alan Brown (6), Chrissie Dow (8), Mark Coffey (12) and Ralph Hunter (14 and holing in 2).
