UGUST in the Valencian Community has recorded the highest number of fires started as a result of lightning strikes in the last 20 years. The 61 cases come ahead of the 47 in 2003 and 35 a year later. According to the Spanish Meteorology Agency (AEMET), more than 22,000 bolts of lightning hit the ground i n Va l e n c i a d u r i n g t h e month... all of which was a consequence of August 2018 being the warmest since 2012. Such weather conditions are always likely to translate to an increase in the risk of forest fires that are already parched when the storms hit.

Sniffer dog strikes again by Glenn Scott THE Canine Unit of Alicante’s Local Police has once again had a major success during a search at the city’s bus station. A stash of 31 kilos of hashish was discovered in a suitcase stored in a bus that arrived at 8.45pm on the daily service that links Algeciras with Barcelona. The cannabis resin was hidden in the luggage and part of a bundle sealed with masking tape. It was uncovered during one of the random checks performed at the Alicante bus
station by the sniffer dogs to prevent and to stop the illegal trafficking of drugs. One of the dogs picked out the suitcase and after the driver confirmed to police its destination was Barcelona, they identified 15 passengers going there. The police then asked them to pick out their cases... but nobody took the one that had been identified by the dog. The police removed the case and discovered its contents. They are keeping the investigation open and have kept details of all the Barcelona-bound passengers.
The scheme is coordinated by the Forest Fire Prevention Centres (CPIF), and irrespective of whether notification of a fire is received or not they monitor where the lightning strikes are. These are then followed
This latest find follows on from a search in Alicante by dogs on the same route in July, when six people were detained for suspected drugs offences on a bus that had RTN’s Darren Parmenter as a passenger on his return from visiting the RTN offices on Costa del Sol.
