TORNADO that made its way along the Costa Blanca coast was a spectacular sight - if not a little frightening. The severe weather phenomenon was witnessed by people from across the Vega Baja, as well as the southern Costa Blanca. It made made its way across Guardamar del Segura and La Mata last Friday morning. The northern Costa Blanca municipalities of Oliva and Denia experienced several waterspouts out to sea on Thursday afternoon, and the unusual weather conditions have been the result of two storms building up in the Vega Baja and in La Safor. €1m fine for environment crime MURCIA’S Regional Government issued a fine of more than €1 million to a company that allegedly continually breached waste and landfill requirements. The fine, totalling €1,474,000, is the biggest ever imposed by them for a crime against the environment. The company, Proambiente, was responsible for the management of the landfill site that covers Abanilla and La Murada until 2011, and the purpose of the fine is aimed at recovering part of the money that has been
spent in restoring the dump and the treatment plant. According to reports, the bill has already reached €5.6 million. However, the Murcian government are going to have to join a queue to receive their money as Proambiente is currently undergoing bankruptcy proceedings with debts going into the multi-millions. The work to recover and seal the old landfill site measuring more than 270,000m2 is expected to be completed in November. Around 80 per cent of the area has been se-
torrential rain. One reader contacted the RTN to say that he had just returned from shopping in Urbanisation La Marina and became trapped in his car. “It must’ve been at least halfan-hour before we even
cured so far. The area was affected by leachate, which is formed when waste degrades and rain washes the resulting products out. The normally black liquid is known to pollute groundwater and represents a major health risk.
