Difference of opinion A 75-YEAR-OLD man has allegedly been assaulted in Oliva after accusing a group of young people of displaying a banner in favour of Catalonian independence.

The incident occurred on Playa Mitja Galta when the man was walking along with his grandson around 11pm last Friday and made comment to those carrying the banner during the Figatell Sound concerts. According to reports, it’s not known what injuries the man sustained but he is in good condition and hasn’t as yet filed a complaint.

The incident has been condemned by the Oliva Council and has started an investigation to clarify exactly what happened and to take any appropriate action.

Ripe roaring success A RECORD number of people bought tickets for the Tomatina festival in Buñol, Valencia this week.

Some 20,000 locals and visitors threw a mammoth 145,000 kilos of tomatoes distributed from seven trucks during the annual event that attracts people from across the world.

Town mayor Juncal Carrascosa said that tickets had been bought by English, American and Chinese nationals among others, adding that it has ‘been one of the most international editions, since, in addition, the ambassadors of Lithuania and Bangladesh visited.’

As well as the traditional red, people were also seen sporting purple tshirts to pay tribute to women victims of domestic violence.

A Tomatina organiser, Councillor Rafa Perez, said the gesture was in memory of the women who have been killed by their partners, and in support of victims suffering today, adding: “We want to tell them they

Dodgy traders in Benidorm

FIVE people are being investigated in Benidorm for allegedly selling fake branded items in a number of shops.

The Guardia Civil has seized more than 500 different counterfeit items which were on sale for a much lower price than the more illustrious real things, and could have a street value of more than €70,000.

Those under suspicion are three Chinese women - aged 30, 31 and 35 - plus a 35year-old Romanian woman and a 40-yearold Pakistani.

Between them, they run five shops in the Mercaloix shopping centre in the Rincon

del Loix area of Benidorm and are very popular with British tourists.

According to reports, a series of inspections took place after a specialist branch of the Guardia Civil received several complaints from companies that produce the genuine items, such as clothing firms and the Swiss Watch Federation.

Of the items confiscated, the majority are made up of handbags, purses, watches, earrings, and caps as well as a selection of labels pertaining to wellknown trademarks that were planned to be affixed to the goods to give them a more authentic appearance.

FIGURES just released by Benidorm Council show that a total of 45 fines were issued during the first five months of the year to people who allowed their dogs to foul the pavements. The number also includes those accused of dumping other rubbish on the public highway rather than depositing it in the correct containers.

Between January and May, the council were able to collect a total of €4,507 from the fines imposed.

Wheel thief detained OFFICERS from the National Police have arrested a 28-year-old man in Alicante in connection with stealing wheels from high-end vehicles.

The investigation began in June when four separate reports were made to the authorities in Denia when all four wheels of their cars had been stolen.

The police noticed that the culprits always followed the same routine, taking the wheels from the same make of car and always around dawn in a confined area of the municipality.

Forensic tests carried out on the vehicles led police to identify the prime suspect who was subsequently arrested. It is understood that the stolen items were put up for sale on the internet in an attempt to hide the real identity of those involved.

Garage drugs find

by Glenn Scott UARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a 34year-old man in San Vicente de Raspeig after being caught with a stash of drugs in his car.

According to reports, he had a total of 55 kilos of hashish hidden in the boot and because of the high amount discovered, has immediately been sent to prison pending further legal action.

The man was stopped by the Guardia Civil after they became suspicious at the way he was leaving a communal car park.

They immediately stopped him and at first he had no papers with him. However, when they accompanied the man to another car, parked in a locked garage, he produced his identification, although remained in a very nervous and agitated state throughout.

As a result, they began a more detailed search of the car and found the drugs made up of hashish packaged in a variety of ways and all ready to be distrib-

Briton dies on Benissa beach A 73-YEAR-OLD British man has died on the Playa Fustera in Benissa.

According to reports, he went to the small cove during the early morning just before 9am and just as he was about to enter the water he suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the shore.

As in all of the Marina Alta area, there is no lifeguard cover on the beaches until 10am. However, despite the speedy arrival of an ambulance and paramedics once the alarm was raised, they could do nothing to save the man’s life.

THE body of a man who lived in Benissa and was found in a mummified state in December 2017 has finally been identified. He is a Dutch citizen named as 63-year-old Peter Mulder whose disappearance was reported over a year earlier by his family in Amsterdam. Now, these two outstanding mysteries have been solved by the Guardia Civil, The corpse was discovered after a dog arrived at its owner’s house with a bone it had found. She just happened to be an osteopath and immediately recognised it was a human tibia and alerted the police. They searched the area and later found the body, with no signs of any violence or identification, in Sant Antoni de Benissa.

RESERVED: Benidorm’s shoreline attracts the early risers.

No action on morning beach users UNLIKE their almost municipal neighbours 25 kilometres along the coast - Calpe - Benidorm is still reluctant to act against a growing number of people who are leaving empty sun loungers and beach umbrellas along the shoreline. Some have been known to reserve their pitch before sunrise, allowing them a first-class spot on the busy beach.

This practice is becoming widespread, especially among people of a certain age, and was something that hadn’t been witnessed in Benidorm before until recently.

Calpe has already put in place their own by-laws to outlaw the habit which prohibits any ‘beach furniture’ or their owners on their beaches before 9.30am. According to reports, the council has begun to remove any offending items and if their owners want to get them back have to pay €250 to the municipal depository.

The issue in Benidorm is due to there not being any sanctions in place, although the matter has been debated for the last two years as to whether formal regulations need to be introduced.

Drug stash uncovered A VILLA in the usually quiet area of Tarraula de Javea has been discovered to be the home of an alleged illegal marihuana business.

After a number of weeks of investigations, the Guardia Civil entered the property and found two greenhouses where 128 marihuana plants were growing in various states. They had been hidden by cloths and wooden pallets, as well as fans working in an attempt to dilute the giveaway smell of the drug.

In addition, they uncovered 3,000 grams of resin and €58,000 in cash and in the process arrested a man in connection with the find. According to reports, the plantation has also given clues about drug trafficking networks across the Marina Alta.

The signs are there SAN VICENTE DEL RASPEIG Council has begun the installation of road signs across a major part of the municipality.

At a cost of €17,000, a total of 47 roads will see the new signage with the aim of making it easier to get around the area, especially for delivery drivers and members of the emergency services.

Among the roads to benefit are Carrer de l’Aguila, Cami del Tossal, Cami del Falco, Cami dels Jovers, Cami del Ras del Bonyigo, Cami Terral, Cami del Soldat, Senda dels Pescadors, and Cami de les Oliveretes.

Up until now, there has been a noticeable lack in both general direction signs and individual road naming and as such this latest initiative will go a long way to addressing the problem.

The move has been warmly welcomed by the local residents.

Bottle attacker jailed

A 38-YEAR-OLD man is behind bars after allegedly assaulting a man with a broken bottle in an Alicante cafe.

According to reports, the detained man entered the cafe in a very violent manner and started hitting and kicking out at the furniture that was in his way. When he was reproached by a customer for what he’d done, the man began hitting him in the face and followed that up by attacking him with a broken bottle which produced a deep cut. He then fled the cafe.

Within minutes of them being called, several members of the National Police appeared in the cafe while others carried out a search of the area to find the alleged attacker. It wasn’t too long before they located him nearby and it’s understood from witnesses that it was only the speedy reaction of the police officers that prevented the attacker from causing injuries to other people in the area.

by Darren Parmenter SHOPKEEPERS and businesses in the Alicante Province were more than delighted to welcome the luxury cruise ship Britannia during her stop on the way to Barcelona from Southampton.

During the 10 hours that she remained in port, an estimated 300,000 was spent across the province by the 4,000 passengers. Around 80 per cent stayed within the city and spent their money there, but the remaining - around 750 visitors - went on a number of excursions that took in Benidorm, Elche, Guadalest,

Busot, Villajoyosa and Altea.

This was the second time that the Britannia - a part of the P&O fleet - has visited Alicante this year and in preparation, more than 31 catering outlets in Alicante City had special tapas on sale. In addition, there were at least 400 stores participating in a campaign that offers special discounts for cruise tourists.

Boys will be buoys!

A YOUNG man has been rescued from the sea off the coast of Moraira after holding on to a buoy.

The alarm was raised in the early hours of Sunday morning when a woman passer-by heard cries for help coming from the sea and immediately called the Local Police.

In addition to the Local Police, the Guardia Civil, Altea’s Red Cross and the Civil Protection Group from TeuladaMoraira took part in the rescue operation of the man who, according to reports, was drunk when finally discovered.

The rescuers in a Red Cross boat got to the man kept afloat by the buoy some 400 metres from the Moraira Yacht Club. The youngster, understood to be a foreign national, was also suffering from hypothermia as well as being intoxicated.

After bringing him back to dry land and being stabilised by paramedics, he was taken by the Civil Protection ambulance to Teulada and then on to the Denia Hospital.

THE number of UK citizens officially living full time in Benidorm has been steadily falling over the past 10 years.

The idea that Benidorm is purely a British-dominated municipality cannot be further from the truth, as recent figures show that of the 66,000 registered on the local Padron, only 2,825 are from the UK. This compares to almost 5,000 a d e c a d e a g o . H o w e v e r, r e p o r t s suggest that the real number is now somewhere between 7,000 and 9,000.

According to the last official figures from the Spanish Institute of Statistics (INE) from December 31, 2017, Britons now only account for 12 per cent of the total number of non-Spanish registered; down from the 20 per cent in 2008.

One of the reasons suggested for this drop may be explained by a high number that reside in Benidorm but simply don’t bother to register.

Each year, the council organises a campaign to remind foreign residents the importance of being on the Padron.

AN 18-year-old French girl suffered a fall on board a small boat which was sailing close to the Moraig cove in Benitachell. According to reports, once paramedics arrived at the scene they found the girl was in severe pain from a back injury and was unable to move her legs.

After being immobilised by the medical team and placed on a spinal board, she was taken ashore and transferred by a waiting ambulance to hospital in Denia.

Benidorm is certainly a cosmopolitan area with 33 per cent of non-Spanish citizens (23,549) coming from 135 different countries.

UK citizens everywhere living in Spain, not just in Benidorm, are

strongly advised to register on the Padron if they haven’t done so already, and to equally ensure that they are as legal as they can possibly be in the country with the uncertainties of Brexit looming around the corner.

It’s cool once again

by David Bennett NORMALITY has returned to the Marina Baixa Regional Hospital after a major breakdown in the cooling system left the building without air conditioning.

As a result, a number of operations scheduled to take place in the theatres experiencing very high temperatures were cancelled for two days last week. Some of the most urgent, however, took place during the cooler times of the day if considered necessary.

A total of three refrigeration units failed simultaneously which required the Ministry of Health to bring in a supply of portable units until the problems have been fully resolved.

According to reports, the emergency cooling equipment was installed over the weekend in the hospital located in Villajoyosa and thus it was possible to get some cold and refreshing air circulating once again.

The postponed surgical procedures have been carried out during this week in the afternoons so as to avoid even more delays in the waiting lists.

IT’S been estimated that more than 1,000 boats of all shapes and sizes are anchored in Javea every day in August. The maritime tourism in the Marina Alta has experienced enormous growth in recent years, and has been helped by the 85 buoys with anchors which have been installed by the town hall.

These stop the equivalent amount of anchors being thrown the bottom of the sea, affecting the marine environment... as well as it being prohibited.

Dangerous lampposts concern LOCAL political party Esquerra Unida de El Campello (EU) has made its concerns known about the state of the lampposts in Avenida El Campello.

This is in response to a number of complaints by local people who say that almost half of them are in a ‘corroded state’ due mainly to the consequences of dog urine. They are worried that if they are left untreated, they could collapse and thus present a risk to the general public.

Staying on the move VILLAJOYOSA has spent close to €30,000 to renew the moving walkway in the Parc del Censal.

The contract was awarded to Thyssenjrups after presenting the lowest bid for the work that also includes renewing the handrails. Currently they are made of rubber and have become very worn and damaged over time.

A selection of the electric mechanisms will also be replaced on the council-owned steps which link the Parc del Censal to the main beachfront road of Avenida Pais Valencia.

VILAFAMES: Susana Meseguer had to give up her passion for sharing her local knowledge.

The regional government of Valencia told Susana Meseguer to stop offering her informative sightseeing walks, or face the consequences.

Finding herself out of work, Susana signed up to GuruWalk, an online platform which brings together tourists and guides all over the world.

guide Susana claims to have received no more than €60 a month sharing her wealth of knowledge about Vilafames, a village in Castellon where she lives.

But she recently received a letter from the regional government explaining that tourist guides in the region need authorisation, and warned her that unless she stopped giving tours, she could face a possible fine of €100,000 to €600,000.

The 50-year-old, who is extremely passionate about the area she lives in, has now apparently left GuruWalk and removed the cards she had placed in the village tourist office advertising her services.

And she refutes claims made in the letter that she was operating from 9am to 9pm each day, adding that it was more of a hobby for her, the odd weekend at most.

Speaking to Spanish press, Susana said she was saddened that she could not share her ‘excitement to spread the word’ about what Vilafames has to offer.

The tour that she offered is no longer available on GuruWalk, despite very positive reviews.

But on a positive note, Susana has apparently setting up her own business hiring out electric bicycles with GPS that can be used to visit the area’s attractions.

THE recently married woman who allegedly helped her carer kill her husband of 15 days has been remanded in custody.

The 45-year-old woman who is apparently wheelchair bound, is alleged to have got out of her chair and held her 69-year-old husband still while her accomplice, aged 58, fatally stabbed him in the neck and face with a screwdriver.

An off-duty police officer saw the incident and rushed to the scene but was too late to help the victim who died almost instantly. The attack happened in an Alicante open air car park.

When she appeared in court the woman said she could not walk, and so was carried to the cells by two court officers.

Music extravaganza A FREE festival of jazz which included concerts and master classes was held at the Casa de la Cultura, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Bous last weekend, featuring Eva Romero and Ramon Cardo Trio, Swing Machine and the CMS Trio.

S A LVA G E e x p e r t s have refloated a luxury motorboat that sank last month.

Six British tourists, including two children, had to abandon the Chloe Helena when it hit a rock off La Barraca beach in Javea.

The €1million vessel was eventually towed back to its base at Denia Marina, but not without problems after the tugboat broke down.

Maritime Rescue boat, the Salvamar Diphda, helped the tugboat, and before returning the motorboat to moorings, ahead of its journey to Denia.

EMBERS of the Hondon Valley Branch of The Royal British Legion joined thousands of Armed Forces veterans and supporters from across the UK and worldwide in a pilgrimage of remembrance to some of the First World War’s most poignant sites.

A spectacular two-mile march through Ypres to the Commonwealth War Grave Commission’s Menin Gate Memorial, led by 1,100 Standard Bearers, was the culmination of the three-day event which saw the 2,200 participants visit the First World War trenches, battlefields and cemeteries of France and Belgium.

Mr Roger Kingham and Mr Neil Pavitt attended the Great Pilgrimage 90 as representatives of Hondon Valley Branch, as a Standard Bearer and wreath layer respectively.

It was a way of getting the members who stay here for the summer together between the July and September meetings.

Thus 49 members set off last week, in typical summer heat, for a lovely day out, with many spending their other-half’s money!

Following the summer break for many of the groups, U3A are back to normal for September, and for the benefit of potential new members out there, they have many varied groups, some are weekly and some are monthly, as follows: Weekly: Spanish Language, Intermediate Bridge, Golfing Group, Chaps, Chatter and Coffee, Calligraphy, Crafts and Petanca.

De-railed HIGH-speed trains AVE have come under fire from disillusioned users who say the level of service has deteriorated.

THE Valencia City Council is looking at ways to regulate the use of electric scooters and motorcycles to avoid ‘massive invasion’ of space.

Speaking to the national media, councillor for Sustainable Mobility, Giuseppe Grezzi, said that while the new forms of transport ‘provide a plus that the city needs, less pollution and less noise, there is a risk of massive occupation of the public space.’

He stressed the importance of ‘protecting this space and pedestrians’ because 48 per cent of journeys in Valencia are made on foot.

Hospital ceiling collapse

HEN it rains, it pours: and that’s certainly been the case with the Marina Baixa Hospital located in Villajoyosa.

Just days after having a major fault in the cooling system that saw a lack of air-conditioning requiring operation to be postponed, the changing rooms that serve one of the operating theatres has experienced a ceiling

collapse. There was nobody in the room at the time and only caused minor damage.

According to reports, it’s not the first time something like this has happened in the hospital and it was the familiar sound of the plaster crashing to the floor which alerted members of staff as to what had happened.

Last February, plaster

from a third floor ceiling corridor collapsed in an area where specialist appointments are carried out... again with no injuries as a result.

Although investigations continue as to what caused the collapse, representatives of unions attributed it to an alleged lack of maintenance over many years, and an overall poor state of the building.

Caught on the roof

It’s a happy ending THE young 14-year-old girl, Shalom Alejandra Triviño, who disappeared in Altea on August 22 was found four days later safe and, according to a posting on the Local Police Facebook page, ‘in a good condition and has already been reunited with her parents.’

A thorough search of the local area and beyond was put into operation and the missing person alert was broadcast across the country via the network of Local Police, Guardia Civil, National Police, and Civil Protection. There has so far been no public explanation of the cause or reason for the teenager’s sudden disappearance.

Child measles cases spike

TWO Romanian nationals, aged 20 and 22, have been arrested in a joint operation by National and Local Police in Gandia.

According to reports, a total of three men were seen during the night on a roof in front of a neighbouring house and the alarm was raised. Police arrived and found a rope hanging down that is believed to have been used to access one of the properties.

They were able to detain one of the men as he tried to escape across the rooftops and the other who was hiding inside one of the houses they had broken into.

Police are still attempting to identify the whereabouts of the third man involved in the crime.

IGURES released by the Public Health Department following a report from the National Epidemiology Centre (NEC) at the Carlos III Institute in Madrid, show a spike in the number of cases of measles being reported. Of all the incidences across Spain this year so far, two out of three are in the Valencian Community.

The NEC monitors and oversees all notifiable diseases throughout the country, and it’s one week’s data that has caused the most concern. During the week of July 16 to 22, of the 191 reported cases some 131 came under the control of the Valencian Community... representing 68 per cent of the total.

Such a significant percentage is likely to be as a result of a wave of infections in the area and comes after an outbreak in the Manises Hospital in Valencia in January this year. In spite of a major initiative to eliminate the disease, combined with an increase in those being vaccinated, such numbers of 100 plus haven’t been

experienced for many years.

This year’s total to date is a fivefold increase compared to the whole of 2017, but experts are satisfied that the outbreak that has been adding to the totals - as well as a number of children arriving in the area unvaccinated - is coming to an end.

Therefore, the current cleaning routines in Benidorm will be focused on the hospitality areas of the municipality in order to check that everything is done to ensure the best possible way of avoiding giving visitors a bad image of the

tourist capital of the Costa Blanca.

One of the recent issues noticed by the cleaning teams is the amount of rubbish bags that are dragged to the bins which have leaked en route. This can make the porous ground in some areas more difficult to clean.

So far this summer, Benidorm Council has collected between €3,500 and €4,000 in fines purely from bars and restaurants.

“GOSH, where have eight years gone?” I asked myself as I gazed up at a festoon of rainbow-coloured brollies above the entrance to Company Bar in the heart of Benidorm’s flourishing gay village.

The delightful display catapulted me back in time to Benidorm’s first LGBT Pride event in 2011 11 months after I made this fantastic Spanish resort my home. It was, in comparison to Pride events in locations ranging from London and San Francisco to Sydney, Australia, a very modest affair that attracted just a few thousand people.

But my, how it’s grown! Last year around 15,000 revellers poured into the resort for a week of festivities, and organisers of

this year ’s event expect even greater numbers to paint Benidorm pink and adorn it with extravagant costumes from Sunday until September 9.

Around this time last year, I wrote a piece for the RTN headed ‘Why I am so proud of Pride.’ In it I said; ‘as we blow whistles, wave rainbow flags and dance in the streets, let’s pause to consider the plight of those living in places where being gay remains a criminal offence - 74 countries in total.

It’s an appalling fact that 12 of them have the death penalty for homosexuality.’

I might well have added that, even in tolerant societies which have done so much to extend equality to their LGBT communities, there are still large pockets of prejudice.

Take the case of Florida student Seth Owen. In July of this year the 18-year-old became headline material when it was widely reported that his religious parents, on discovering that he was gay, insisted that he attend their deeply-homophobic church so that he might be ‘cured’ of his homosexuality.

Seth rightly rejected the ‘prayaway-the-gay’ pressure put on him by his parents and he left home. But this created a problem.

He was due to enrol at Georgetown University this August with scholarships totalling $50,000.

But he needed an extra $20,000 which his parents would not now provide.

One of Owen’s former teachers then created a GoFundMe appeal

- and in the space of two months it raised a staggering sum of $141,636. Then the university generously decided to adjust Seth’s tuition fees, saying he need not pay the $20,000.

Now that he is be able to attend Georgetown with no financial worries, Seth said he plans to get a law degree, and use the cash raised to establish a scholarship to help others in the LGBT community who are in similar situations.

Seth’s story is not unique according to America’s Centres for Disease Control. Bullying and assault are common for LGBT teens who come out. One study published on the CDC website shows 30 per cent of LGBTQ teens consider suicide, compared to 6 per cent for heterosexual teens. Similar statistics have been recorded in other Western democracies.

Seth’s experience - and the displays outside Company Bar and many other establishments in Benidorm’s Old Town in anticipation of Pride 2018 should serve to remind us that while much progress has been made, our battle against the forces of mainly religious bigotry is very far from over.

Port expansion plans revealed

Late in July, the French group Eiffage were awarded the contract for the construction and management of the terminal for the next 30 years, and was the first step in implementing the new Strategic Plan 2018 to 2022 which headlines two main objectives.

One is to improve the competitiveness of the docks so by 2022 the Port will be moving four million tons of merchandise annually, in addition to targets of 200,000 containers and 350,000 passengers.

MORE than 100 people took part in the latest blood donor session held at the Teulada-Moraira Town Hall.

Although 107 offered their blood, 94 were accepted following the usual strict parameters being followed, and the afternoon session proved the most popular time with 62 donations.

It is understood that eight people became donors for the first time and those 94 donations can help 282 others that are in need of blood. The Valencia Community needs an average of 250 units of blood each day.

GROWTH: Ambitious targets for trade and passengers in Alicante.

The challenge for the new company is there, as current figures show that the movement of goods has fallen by 15.4 per cent in the first half of this year to just 1,483,687.

This is less than half of the 3,446,770 ton figure with which it ended 2017.

The figures for 2022 foresee a growth of 16 per cent when compared to those of last year.

The planned growth for cruise passengers is even more ambitious as it aims to multiply by eight the numbers who arrived in 2017. Although this year

so far has seen some remarkable figures, (42,201 so far) they are likely to end 2018 somewhat short of the record for Alicante in 2011 which stands at 108,435... and a third of the 2022 target.

The second aspect of the project is to open more leisure activities in the Port near to the fish market and the dry dock area, to accommodate the growing sport and hotel trade.

A further objective is boosting the traffic to North Africa, with new links to Morocco being a key factor, and encouraging more imports and exports to the province to prevent businesses using other ports instead.

REPRESENTATIVES from the UK HMRC (Revenue and Customs) will be holding a session to discuss tax issues in the Salon de Actos, Espai La Senieta in Moraira.

The event takes place on Tuesday at 5pm and will be attended by British Consul Sarah-Jane Morris, mayor of Teulada-Moraira, Carlos Linares and Councillor Laura Hillstead.

HMRC has introduced new legislation that requires individuals to make sure their foreign income and assets are in order before a September 30, 2018 deadline and the arrival of tougher penalties.

Essential subsidies given TEULADA-MORAIRA has received a subsidy of around €34,000 from the Alicante Provincial Council for women and their well-being, and will be available this year.

The cash will be used to support a number of areas and services and the amounts granted to each area will depend on the urgency or necessity. It is planned to give home care a substantial part of the grant (€26,335), with €3,484 going to set up workshops to help the elderly and those with mental disorders.

Fakes, fakes and more fakes LOCAL POLICE in Alicante have confiscated more than 1,200 fake items valued at â‚Ź24,000.

The seizure comes after a series of checks on a number of mainly counterfeit football kits and shoes.

The two arrests were part of an operation that will continue for the foreseeable future as the authorities’ crackdown on this form of illegal trading on the streets.

BENISSA Council has announced that it had no choice but to cut down one of their iconic palm trees on the Passeig Dolors Piera. It was taken down yesterday (Friday) and has been done so for safety reasons as it’s located in an area used by large numbers of people. The reason given by the council is that the tree hasn’t been able to recover from the damage it suffered due to a fungal disease it contracted some years ago.

by Darren Parmenter THE war of the free excursions has broken out on the beaches of Benidorm.

This summer has seen an increase in the number of people attempting to attract tourists to visit the island of Tabarca, and they’re doing everything possible to get them on their trips, even by offering them completely free... almost!

From mid morning, the chants of ‘Free trips to Tabarca!’ can be heard across the Playa Levante accompanied by a man distributing leaflets and

brochures promoting the trip for the next day.

The day-trippers will be treated to a bus ride from Benidorm to the boat, a free breakfast and lunch, and a tour around all that the increasingly popular island off the coast of Alicante can offer.

In return, and this is where the ‘almost free’ kicks in, travellers will only have to pay €10 for the boat trip.

This has caused consternation among a number of people as the word ‘free’ is repeated in large lettering throughout the brochure, but a search of the small print reveals otherwise. In addition, part of the ‘deal’ is for the tourists

to listen to a sponsor’s demonstration and encourage purchases from them.

According to reports, many of these excursions are organised by illegal companies and in any case distributing such advertising material is prohibited by a number of local by-laws.

Juanjo Perez Parker, President of the Association of Travel Agencies in Benidorm (AVIBE), has demanded tough action be taken. “We cannot tolerate these people making money by deceiving tourists and taking customers away from guides and companies that are legal,” he said.

BIKE SHOW: Enjoyed by thousands.

NCE again, the annual Costa Blanca Custom Bike Show in Albir (hosted by Buddy Pauls Blues ‘N’ Boogie Club) was an enormous success, enjoyed by thousands of aficionados and the curious alike.

This is the eighth year in a row that the event, held last Sunday, has been staged and the large numbers that thronged to the Eucalyptus Park were greeted with an incredible line up, proudly displayed by their owners. Needless to say, there were a number of Harley Davidson bikes on parade and, as always, attracted enormous interest.

Estimates from the organisers suggest that there were more than 1,000 shiny and spotlessly clean bikes lined up along the road that runs both in front and behind the park, giving everyone a perfect opportunity of having a prized picture taken with them.

However, it wasn’t a bike that attracted the most attention and was declared the real shows t o p p e r. I n t h i s c a s e , i t w a s a s p a r k l i n g turquoise V8 Chevrolet made in 1957.

In addition to the amazing selection of bikes to admire, there were a number of stands selling the widest possible range of accessories to melt every biker’s heart, as well as the ever-present food and a bar, all accompanied by live music which rang out across the day keeping everyone royally entertained.

NEW light has been shed on the history of Calpe thanks to the latest findings during this summer ’s archaeological digs.

Remains of a ‘new’ building have been discovered next to the wall of the medieval La Pobla, and it’s believed they go back as far as the 14th century.

It’s hoped this significant find will help historians understand more about the population that lived in Calpe and in its vicinity over 700 years ago. This recent dig has also uncovered two new tombs and a new pathway to the centre of the old village.

Only a small section has been uncovered so far, but it has nevertheless been welcomed by the team of 30 volunteers from Spanish and European universities who have been involved in the project under the guidance of archaeologist Jose Luis Menendez.

The bird, which is ringed, is being held safely by the animal authorities and waiting for it to be reclaimed.

THERE is little doubt that Benidorm is one of the places to be if you want fun.

It surely has something for everyone. Of course the principal attractions for visitors have been its miles of sandy beaches and fantastic weather.

Then on Saturday it is time for the parade.

This is perhaps the most famous day of the event, with images beamed around Spain and the world of the flamboyant and colourful revellers.

The best spot to see the parades is the Levante beach - so make a date and don’t miss the fun.

The culmination of the parade is back at the auditorium where the T Dance Pride Party is held where there is an incredibly talented set of singers, dancers, tribute artists, DJs and drag artists waiting to entertain you.

Once the show is over it’s back to Discoteca Penelope for yet another party.

This one is hosted by one of the biggest names in the world of gay clubbing, KLUSTER, with sounds provided by DJs Neo Scott, Dave Urania and Andrade.

The festivities draw to a close on Sunday night with the Benidorm Pride Closing Party, on Levante beachfront, hosted by Supermarxe, saying goodbye to Pride 2018 in spectacular style.

HEN you first hear the name Pinocchio most people immediately think Italian, but the Eetcafé Pinocchio on Levante Beach in Benidorm is actually modern Dutch but with plenty of international options.

It’s open every day (except Monday) from 10am until midnight and offers a complete range of food from a cheese roll to its specialities of Ribs or Spicy Chicken.

Opened in 1999, unlike many restaurants and bars which come and go, Pinocchio has a fantastic track record and has more than 5,000 followers for its Facebook page.

The clientele is made up of customers from many countries, but the largest number come from Holland, England and Spain and thanks to its prominent position right on the beach front at the Avenida de Madrid, it is very buzzy with plenty of guests being lured in by the comfortable surroundings and wide menu which does include pizza.

You don’t have to eat to visit Eetcafé Pinocchio as it is a great place to come for a drink, make use of the free WiFi and perhaps watch one of the TV screens when important sporting events such as La Vuelte a España are taking place or when La Voz (The Voice) for Holland or England are being transmitted.

Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday live music is on offer as part of the evening entertainment, but this doesn’t mean that it takes over the restaurant but rather is an accompaniment to an enjoyable meal or drink.

One problem with sitting on the adjacent beach is the nuisance of beach sellers and the possible health risk associ-

ated with buying food or drink from them, but this is something that can easily be overcome thanks to the management of Pinocchio.

As a long running bar and restaurant it is regularly checked for hygiene and offers a small selection of drinks and snacks in disposable cups and plates which you can buy to consume on the beach.

This is one way of ensuring your safety and also the proceeds go to an established operation rather than into the pockets of hawkers.

Chips go with everything!

HOW do you like your chips? Even within Britain tastes differ. Some swear that they should be thick cut and preferably a bit soggy, although most probably like them crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy in the middle.

Others go for what American’s term ‘fries’ - thin and crisp - but whatever your taste this Belgian delicacy has been around for a very long time.

It may seem a bit strange, but as far as researchers can tell the first officially documented case of the chip was by American president Thomas Jefferson who had ‘potatoes served in the French manner’ at a White House dinner in 1802.

According to Etienne Bastaits, head chef and owner of the Atelier Belge de Madrid, the chip is one of the stars of any kitchen, even a ‘haute cuisine’ kitchen.

He maintains that the most important factor when cooking chips is to choose the right potato.

They should be high in starch and low in water, with Bastaits recommending the Bintje potato as being per-

fect for frying. Of course, if you can’t get hold of that particular variety use whatever is to hand!

The perfect chip should be fried in oil at 130 degrees for around 11 minutes and then left to rest (around 10 minutes) before being thrown back into oil at 180

degrees for five minutes.

This will make them extra crispy.

If you like them soggy, for instance to accompany traditional British crispy cod, then just put them in 130 degree oil and let them cook slowly for around 20 minutes.

Pink Ladies and Pink Panthers.

Last year’s show was hit a little bit with the downfall of Monarch Airways. Many people had bought tickets for the show but got stranded and were unable to come.

The show was a smash hit though, and saw the amazing Sonia own the stage. Starring alongside the very controver-

sial Honey G. Previous shows have included GARETH GATES, KATRINA & THE WAVES, CRISSY ROCK, RAY QUINN and MICK MILLER, to name just a few. This year the organisers promise to blow all previous shows out of the water.

Eat yourself healthy

WE are what we eat - and what we eat affects how we can lead our lives.

Perhaps if you find you have a lack of energy, or get a bit irritable after a long day at work you should take a closer look at what you use to refuel.

Here are seven food items you might try as part of a balanced diet: 1. Cereals. These have been a staple since the very earliest days when man settled down into a farming culture. And for good reason too. Their high carbohydrate content slowly releases energy throughout the day, helping to avoid sugar highs and lows.

2. Fruit. Healthy and natural, fruit release a lot of energy. They are the ideal midmorning snack to give you an energy boost. Different types have different benefits in the form of a variety of vitamins, so don’t just stick to one type. Mix and match for the best results.

3. Vegetables. For a truly healthy diet, it’s best to eat vegetables with every meal.

They tend to be easily digestible and are packed with vitamins. Again, it is best to eat a variety, with fresh seasonal veg top of the list for healthy eating.

4. Fish. Easily obtainable in Spain, oily fish like sardines and tuna are excellent sources of essential nutrients and vitamins. You can add salmon to the list too, with all being high in protein and low in calories making them a perfect food within a healthy diet. Remember to use ethically caught fish wherever possible.

5. Meat. Many may disagree, but the consensus seems to be that some meat is needed in a human diet. It should ideally be grilled or roasted to avoid fat, but it is high in protein.

6. Nuts. Walnuts and almonds are among the best sources of omega 3 and omega 6 which is claimed to contribute to a strong and agile mind.

7. Chocolate or cacao.

We have saved the best till last! A common thought is that all chocolate is bad for you, but in fact a little of what you fancy is good for you.

Admittedly the recommended daily ration is between 25 and 30 grammes it has a natural stimulant which is thought to improve

I WAS finally hitting the road with a prestigious six-piece English/Irish showband after 10 years of playing music in pubs and small working men’s clubs.

These were the sort of places where the punters let their children run riot with a bag of Walkers crisps on the dance floor, and 50 per cent of the crowd left after the bingo, just when we came on to play our best and well rehearsed slot.

Let me explain what an Irish showband was. It was a band that included a brass section, guitars and drums. It played all types of music from foxtrots to swing, waltzes to jive and modern day chart hits.

Irish showbands had a massive popularity in the north and the south of Ireland and between the 1950’s and late 1980’s filled dance halls to capacity.

In my new band (The Las Vegas Showband) I started to get a buzz from my gigs for the first time in many years.

The punters were now paying good money to see us, which resulted in higher wages and a feeling of joy that at last my years of practising my bass without the help of Google was giving me results.

But in 1975 the craic wasn’t good in Cricklewood, and yer Paddy and biddy

This sad story encapsulated all the madness of this time in Ireland and to be honest with you when I heard this news it reduced me to tears. The Miami Showband was a Dublin band that was popular and talented.

They were just young lads who played cabaret with the sole purpose of providing entertainment.

On their journey home while driving back to Dublin they were flagged down at a fictitious checkpoint. It was the UVF. They had pre-prepared a time bomb which they had planned to place in the back of the van. The bomb exploded prematurely killing two of the UVF men (for want of a better word) who were also soldiers in the Ulster Defence Force.

The rest of the gunslingers shot dead three of these lads and seriously wounded the other two. Three men were convicted of this murder but were released under the terms of the 1998 Belfast agreement. I am just a retired atheist living in a fantastic country. I will never understand how either Catholics or Protestants could wipe out a bunch of young lads...

What’s a million these days?

THINK AGAIN: Maybe not such a good idea.

Well presumably a nice house would

be on many people’s shopping list, but let’s face it, if you opted for London or leafy Surrey there wouldn’t be a lot of change left over for things like food and lottery tickets. So a more modest target

elsewhere would need to be looked at say £500,000.

That would get you an above average four-bedroom detached in many areas. But then maintaining it and living comfortably would be mighty difficult with the depressing interest rates today. You would seriously have to consider keeping the day job just to tread water.

If you opted for an even more modest property at under 200k, then welcome to Birkenhead or Goole - at least you would be near the sea. The interest on the rest, foregoing the pleasure of a round-the-world-cruise, should just about ensure a reasonable lifestyle if you were careful.

So in order to live that fabled millionaire lifestyle, you would need one of the heftier wins on Euro Millions - say £20 million at least.

This would get you that pad in Chipping Campden; a nice Aston Martin Vantage; exotic holidays and a cabana on the beach in St Barts with its own mooring and accompanying Sunseeker.

This should leave you with plenty in the kitty to invest wisely and live high off the hog for the rest of your life. And don’t forget that people with this sort of bread are always able to employ the best tax avoidance consultants, paying the minimum amount to HMCR. And that’s why I wouldn’t even get out of bed for anything less than a quadruple roll-over on the lottery.

Book revolution that never happened

THERE are 26 tools in my toolbox. A clue as to their make-up is to be found in the words of Benjamin Franklin: ‘Give me 26 lead soldiers and I will conquer the world.’

Although there are 52 published book titles with my name on their front covers my name in lights tends to be elusive still. Authors rarely become famous and only a few become rich. Fortunately, we writers tend not to be money-oriented.

Life’s riches aren’t to be found in bank vaults. Several rich friends winsomely confide that they envy my creativity or yearn for my comparatively uncluttered lifestyle.

Before stepping off the hamster wheel I dreamed of an Ernest Hemingway existence. Driving along using my keyboard to steer

Within reason, writers could now self-publish and place their novels on the bookshelves of the world’s biggest bookshop.

The theory was fine but in practice left much to be desired. Amazon has on offer 32.8 million books so your book and mine are needles in a haystack the size of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Recently, I returned to self-publishing and regret ever having been seduced by the bookshop behemoth. Amazon has proved to be a huge waste of time and money; a rainbow with a piss-pot at the end of it.

I had books and poetry collections printed by the 1,000 and they sold well. Before Amazon, just six of my book titles outsold

the 52 books I now have with Amazon.

Amazon is simply not good at selling books. Genuine tributes from authors seem to be as rare as hen’s teeth. Amazon removes thousands of titles it considers to be politically incorrect; its royalties paying system lacks transparency, shipping costs are high

and deliveries problematic.

Only Scrooge could applaud Amazon’s sweatshop working conditions. Shameless, the company faced further controversy after being granted a patent for a wristband which would track employee movements and tell them where to go. You can read what you will into that.

Uses of ser and estar part 2 Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE ended the last article on this definition of the uses of ‘ser’ and ‘estar.’

ESTAR refers to ‘how’ and ‘where’ SER refers to ‘who,’ what’ and ‘when’ I’m rather pleased with that definition because I think it gives us a very good starting point and sums up the main difference between the two verbs. We can include the word ‘when’ in our definition of ‘ser’ as this is the verb used for time expressions, such as ¿Qué hora es?; Son las dos; hoy es lunes; ¿Cuándo es tu cumpleaños?

‘Estar’ refers to the ‘state’ of something or someone. The word is actually linked to the word ‘state’ which is ‘estado’ in Spanish. A nation state is ‘un estado’ and something that is in a good or bad state or condition is in ‘mal estado’ or ‘buen estado.’

We ask people ‘¿Cómo estás?’ (How are you? In other words ‘What state are you in?’) This could also apply to things: ‘La mesa está sucia’ (the table is dirty); ‘La comida está caliente’ (the food is hot).

Most learners of Spanish also catch on reasonably easily to the idea that ‘estar’ is connected to location as in ‘Madrid está en el centro de España’ and ‘el libro está encima de la mesa’ (the book is on the table). (Notice that ‘estar’ is used in both cases, irrespective of whether the location is temporary or permanent).

In the case of ‘ser’ we are talking about ‘who’ or ‘what,’ in other words, something that can describe the quality or nature of something in a way that makes it recognisable. Obvious examples are ‘Soy Jane, soy profesora, soy inglesa, soy delgada’ (I’m Jane, I’m a teacher, I’m English, I’m thin) these are descriptions of ‘who’ I am. This works in the same way for things: ‘el mundo es redondo,’ ‘la mesa es grande’ (the world is round, the table is big), all describe essential, identifiable qualities or characteristics.

There is another basic principle about these two verbs and about languages in general which I think is worth pointing out here, which is that it is not always helpful to be over-concerned about what

is strictly ‘correct’ or ‘incorrect.’

Quite often it is more a question of what idea we wish to express.

Sometimes the difference between ‘ser’ and ‘estar’ simply is the difference between a characteristic and a state.

For example, I could say of a woman ‘es guapa’ (she is pretty) as a way of describing and identifying her using the verb ‘ser,’ or I could look at someone who has just walked into the room all made up with her hair done and a new dress and say ‘estás muy guapa hoy’ using the verb ‘estar.’ The best way to translate this into English would be: ‘you’re looking very pretty today’. I’m not implying that the person isn’t usually pretty, I’m just referring to their ‘state’ rather than something that describes them in an essential way.

There are many other examples related to ‘ser’ and ‘estar,’ where what is correct or incorrect depends on what you mean. For example, I might say ‘estoy aburrida’ which means ‘I am bored’ that is, in a state of boredom.

If I say ‘soy aburrida,’ this means ‘I am boring,’ that is a boring person. Another well-known example is the word ‘listo.’

‘Estar listo’ means to be ready, whereas ‘ser listo’ means to be clever, ie on the ball, quick on the uptake. There are many other examples of these kinds of differences, and as you can see they are often expressed in quite different ways in English. As ever, it is our reliance of translation which can make foreign languages harder for us to grasp.

Well, that’s all I have time for today, but I think I’ll spend one more week giving you some more examples related to ‘ser’ or ‘estar’ before moving on to other wonderful things about this fascinating language we are learning!

Panic attacks - a terrifying experience PANIC attacks are terrifying for the victim, a sense of dying may come about when the panic attack takes grip, loss of control and fear internalise and compound to such an extent the body seems powerless.

The effects of the panic attacks may magnify with time, causing them to escalate to such a degree that medication may be the only way through. It may seem as though the heart is going to stop and the world will come to an end, sweat may exude and the feeling of isolation and fear can be overwhelming for the victim.

Growing trend of the lotus birth A LOTUS birth, is an increasingly popular trend amongst new mothers. It involves not cutting the umbilical cord after the baby is born and leaving it attached to the placenta until it falls off on its own.

This method is seen by many as a natural and spiritual option and is common in some cultures such as in Bali before the idea was introduced in the 1980’s in the USA and Australia. Followers believe it allows the baby to continue obtaining all the nutrients the placenta has to offer, such as stem cells, before the placenta dries up and that cutting the cord can be traumatic for the infant.

However studies are still underway on any potential benefits of the placenta and now experts have warned of the risk of leaving the placenta attached. With some leaving it attached for up to two weeks before it drops off naturally, the British Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists warns about the risks of infection and bacteria developing in the placenta and spreading to the baby.

With a growing number of women in the UK reportedly opting for a lotus birth, the British Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said the placenta is particularly prone to infection as it contains blood and recommends that babies be monitored carefully for any signs of infection.

There were street gangs roaming the neighbourhood area and on one occasion she and her brother were chased through the streets, her brother didn’t run fast enough and he was tragically killed by the gang.

The intensity of this early traumatic memory triggered her panic attacks to come on when she reached the same heart rate at the time of the traumatic experience.

I see similar cases in my clinic, where clients are arrested by their earlier traumatic experiences, sometimes presenting as panic attacks. By working through the process of recovery, the bounds of limitation and the weight of the condition can be reduced to prevent further attacks from occurring.

There are lots of signs that pets are not happy in the heat, some go off their food, others find a shady spot and hide for as long as they can. Circus tigers get new homes THANKS to the work of animal protection entities and the change of mentality towards animals by society, circuses have begun to consider relocation of their animals.

Th e l a st ca se s o ccurred earlier this month when four Bengal tigers were transferred by a circus in Spain to two private centres that have decided to help these

animals to have a new life; Safari Aitana and El Bosque zoo. Both have plenty of space where they can run around, enjoy the sun and even take a dip in their own private pools.

“Unfortunately, the situation in Spain with respect to circus animals is very complicated because there is no public centre or enough private places to house all these

animals removed from the circus,” said Raquel López and Laura Riera, specialists in the rescue and relocation of animals.

Diana, Zita, Willie and Ramon, the four tigers, will always thank their rescuers for this second opportunity; Diana and Zita have been relocated at El Bosque and Willie and Ramon to the Safari Aitana in Penaguila.

Lamborghini Aventador SVJ - quick off the mark AUTOMOBILI LAMBORGHINI has unveiled the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ during Monterey Car Week in California at ‘The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering.’

The combination of extraordinary design, groundbreaking technologies and the ultimate in handling, performance and driver enjoyment, the Aventador SVJ creates pure driving perfection, taking the concept of a super sports car to a new dimension.

The new Aventador SVJ, where SV historically stands for Superveloce meaning ‘superfast’ - takes the ‘Jota’ suffix, denoting its track and performance superiority: the Aventador SVJ has already claimed its position as the Nürburgring-Nordschleife production car record holder, completing the 20.6 km lap in just 6:44.97 minutes.

Production of the model will be limited to just 900.

The lap record is living proof of its benchmarking performance. With its optimised power plant making it the most powerful series production V12engined car produced to date by Lamborghini, the SVJ features an increase in power to 770 hp (566 kW) at maximum 8,500 rpm.

The SVJ outputs 720 Nm of torque at 6,750 rpm, while a dry weight of just 1,525 kg gives the SVJ a

weight-to-power ratio of 1.98 kg/hp.

The SVJ accelerates from standing to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and from 0 to 200 km/h in 8.6 seconds. A top speed of more than 350 km/h is complemented by a braking distance of 100 km/h to 0 in 30 metres.

The first customers will take delivery of the new Lamborghini Aventador SVJ at the beginning of 2019.

According to IIHS, models that earn Top Safety Pick honours are the best vehicle choices for safety within their size categories. Kona’s award adds to the list of eight new Hyundai models that are rated Top Safety Pick+ or Top Safety Pick when equipped with front

crash prevention and specific headlights, tied for the second most in the industry.

This award is for Konas built after May 2018, as Hyundai made changes to the Kona’s available LED projector headlights to minimise glare for oncoming drivers.

Following the change, the LED headlights, which are available on the Limited and Ultimate trim lines, earned a good rating.

The Ultimate trim’s headlights also feature high-beam assist, a feature that automatically switches between high beams and low beams depending on the presence of other vehicles in the path of the lights.

THE second ‘La Marina de Ifach’ Golf Tournament has been announced for Sunday, September 16, taking place at the Club de Golf Ifach. It will be played as a Stableford competition with two categories, one each for ladies and gentlemen.

As a novelty to the tournament, there will be a free golf workshop for everyone who is taking part on the day before Saturday, September 15 - led by local golf pro Kiko Marques. He’ll be on hand to teach anyone whatever their level and give some tips on golf swing and the theory of the game.

Pensioner in toughest challenge yet ALICANTE-BORN Gonzalo Infante is currently heading to South Africa to compete in the Ironman World Championship.

Taking place in Nelson Mandela Bay over this weekend, there’s one major thing that makes Gonzalo’s participation all the more unusual.

He’s 72-years-old!

He only took up the gruelling sport of triathlon which combines swimming, cycling and athletics four years ago and has gone from one success to another until qualifying to take part in the World Championships.

Gonzalo is a member of the Arena Triathlon team and back in May, in Marbella, won his age group (70 to 74).

Around 30 people are expected to take part in his category at this weekend’s

QUALIFIED: Gonzalo Infante ahead of his 113 kilometre task. competition which includes 1.9 kilometres of swimming, 90 kilometres cycling and to round it off, 21.1 kilometres running... much longer distances than the traditional triathlon event made famous in the UK by the

Brownlee brothers.

Gonzalo Infante is a renowned architect in Alicante, with one of his proudest achievements being the design of the dock where the Volvo Ocean Race sets off.

Carp-R-Us travel to Beniarres CARP-R-US made the long, but usually worthwhile, trip to Beniarres for the penultimate round of the August series. Although sport was fairly slow during the first half of the match, the weights were very good with Terry Screen running out winner with 18.42kg caught on pole and paste. Second was Steve Collins with 11.20kg caught using pole and corn, third was Roy Buttress with 8.62kg using feeder and corn, just pipping Tom Marshall who had 8.40kg on float fished corn.

Pego Golf Society ON a hot and very humid late August day 29 players turned out to for the ‘Team Accumulator,’ and as always it was a pleasure to welcome a guest player... Cameron Mitchell.

1st place team: Brian Barden, Peter Rapley, Michael Connolly and Barry Carter with 119 points.

Runners-up: John Nicol, Shawn O’Gorman, Jean Taylor and John Evans on 111 points.

Third place: Jim Hayward, Stella Fox, Derek Lindley and A Ghost also with 111 points.

Nearest the Pins: Ian Robertson on both holes 5 and 16, landing 0.95m and 2.38m away respectively.

There were two ‘two’s’ on the day, but as Cameron Mitchell failed to put in his euro, Penny Barden scooped the total pot, with the squeal of delight as the ball dropped into the 16th being heard for miles around!

Nobody came anywhere near close to guessing the number of ‘Balls in the Water’ (only 61 this time) but Barry Carter won this particular pot with a card draw.

There were also two Match Play games on the day, with Dave O’Connor beating Celia Cronin in a tough game 2 and 1. In the other game, it was a confusion of ‘Terry’ proportions as nobody knew whether it was Langley or Moore at first... but it transpired to be Terry Moore winning 5 and 4.

There is no match next week due to hollow tining.
