T’S becoming almost impossible to walk along the pavements in Cabo Roig on the Orihuela Costa without falling over a street seller. A problem that was always associated with nearby Torrevieja, this 700-metre stretch of narrow walkway is now the apparent new home of more than 80 ‘manteros’ (named after the sheet or blanket they lay on the ground to display their products) that dominate the area from 8pm onwards. I t ’s m o r e t h a n w e l l known that almost everything on sale is counterfeit, ranging from bags to t-shirts to sunglasses and watches, and they occupy a significant amount of public space. And it’s starting to annoy local people, residents associations and business owners who have demanded more control from the Local Police. According to a report in the Spanish media, Liam Kiley from the Federation of Associations of Orihuela Costa (FAOC) is among those calling for more police presence. “These illegal street sellers are seriously affecting the trade of those legally operating as well as the bar and restaurant trade as they’re restricting access,” he said.

He laments it seems as if neither the police nor the Orihuela Council do anything to address the growing problem. The FAOC are proposing that the police visit the Orihuela Costa more often and seize the illegal products on sale, on the basis that if the sellers see the authorities being more proactive, they won’t return. As well as the alleged illegal goods and the disruption they cause,
the ‘manteros’ pay no tax, no insurance and no rent for the land; significant expenses that have to be paid by the law-abiding traders in the same area.
