Not so cool in Crevillente CREVILLENTE’S council has had to bring in limits on the use of the municipality’s senior citizens centre due to a breakdown in the air-conditioning system.

A consequence of the fault has been the postponement of both the annual summer dance and the temporary closing down of the cinema room, and area that has no windows that are able to be opened.

The problems began last Thursday, and everything points to the problems being caused by the age of the cooling system which is more than a decade old.

According to a report in the Spanish media, the town hall said the problems are being resolved... but if they can’t be fixed, will consider investing in new air-conditioning.

Not sitting on the dock of this bay

A

NEW Spanish high-tech submarine that has cost close to €1 billion doesn’t fit in its dock in Cartagena.

The S-80 Plus has not been the luckiest of projects for the Spanish Navy.

First of all, back in 2013, it was too heavy by more than 125 tons and there were fears that while it would be able to submerge, it might not be able to float to the surface and stay there.

Therefore decisions were taken for a redesign and increase the submarine’s length by an extra 10 metres - to 81 metres - and increase its weight accordingly.

But someone who came up with the redesign didn’t take into account the length of the naval base in Cartagena... a mere 78 metres.

Now, the Ministry of Defence will be forced to dredge and expand the docks at an estimated cost of €16 million.

Special relationship or wishful thinking?

A FORMER British Ambassador to the USA, Sir Nigel Sheinwald, recently said that the special relationship between Britain and America during the Regan/Thatcher years was a myth.

He explained that Ronald Regan did not support Britain during the Falklands conflict and indeed kept Margaret Thatcher in the dark at the time of the invasion of Grenada, a member of the Commonwealth over which Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State.

The special relationship was first referred to by Winston Churchill but for many years, whilst it appeared to be a good idea, the reality has been that Britain has either been ignored or persuaded to get involved in military campaigns.

Now, of the 29 members of NATO who undertook to spend 2 per cent of GDP on defence, just five actually do so and they are USA (3.6), Greece (2.4), Estonia (2.1), UK (2.1) and Poland (2).

As a businessman, rather than a statesman, President Trump suggested at the latest NATO summit that the spend by the USA was in order to protect the likes of Germany, a country which is now completely dependent upon Russia for supplies of natural gas.

He effectively asked why America should spend so much money to help defend Germany against Russia for Germany to spend billions of euros helping to keep the Russian economy strong.

It is a somewhat disingenuous argument as the amount spent is not compulsory and is not paid over to NATO but is the amount spent on the military of each country by their defence departments.

One Pole, who had grown up under com-

munist rule, has been quoted on social media and in the press as saying ‘Dear America, appreciate your allies, after all you don’t have all that many.’

After having fired a few telling shots to members of NATO and the EU, Donald Trump made it to the UK to meet his ‘new, old friend’ Theresa May who must have been mortified that he arranged to give an interview to The Sun newspaper, which was published as he arrived for dinner with the prime minister and her husband.

He made it clear that in his opinion, her blueprint for the UK divorce with the European Union would make it impossible to sign bilateral trade deal with the US. Commenting on the Chequers plan, which would keep the UK aligned with the EU on many trade regulations he said that accepted by the EU it ‘will definitely affect trade with the United States, unfortunately in a negative way.’

Adding, “I would have done it much differently, I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route.”

To say that the timing of his interview, and indeed entire visit, was unfortunate would be an understatement and just goes to support the suggestion that there is no special relationship, although he did later suggest that his comment was ‘fake news’ until the recorded interview was published.

Airport numbers flattening out

FTER growth in passenger numbers that have shown relentless increases over a number of months, airport manager AENA has confirmed a sharp drop for June.

Figures released for last month for Alicante-Elche Airport showed an increase, but only 0.9 per cent ... some 10 points less than the equivalent month in 2017. A total of 1.4 million passengers used the airport during that time.

According to a report in the Spanish media, some of the decline can be attributed to the disappearance of Monarch Airlines, whose seats haven’t been completely covered by other airways. In addition, other areas such as Turkey and Egypt, which offer the traditional beach holiday and have had their own issues in recent years, have begun to recover their popularity.

Council crackdown on beach music OWNERS of a number of beach bars in Cartagena have expressed their outrage at regulations that prevent them from having any form of music.

Not only is live music banned on their premises, the law also extends to any ‘sound reproduction devices,’ with many entrepreneurs believing that the by-laws are obsolete and fail to recognise the changing wants and needs of tourists.

The bars have received a twopage circular informing them of all the laws at municipal, regional and a national level that regulate the

use of beach bars ... and that includes music of any kind.

Bar owners accept that they can’t be a disco, a club or a concert hall, but they fail to understand why even ambient music played through a CD or a computer is also prevented.

However, Cartagena Council states that the regulations are no different from those in force last year, and the aim of the notification was to ensure that the owners are fully aware that they can be fined if they don’t comply.They could potentially have their concession for the beach bar withdrawn.

Smell the price of gas rising THE price of gas bottles has risen by nearly 5 per cent, and in the process is the first hike in the cost since January.

The standard and familiar orange 12.5 kilo butane canisters, that previously cost €13.27, have gone up to €13.92 after a series of price reductions during the first six months of the year.

The cost of the raw material saw gas bottles drop by 4.9 per cent in March and May, which went against the upward trend experienced during the winter months.

Over the last three-and-ahalf years, the highest price paid for a gas bottle has been €17.50 - in March

Gas users should be aware that only the orange ones are affected by the state-controlled price, as the sellers of the lighter silvercoloured gas bottles are al-

People whose orange gas bottles are delivered via a contract with a supplier such as REPSOL - will usually pay a few euros more than the official retail price to cover the cost of transport to their front doors.

ACCORDING to a report in the Spanish media, the seven health centres under the control of the Orihuela Department of Health will be without midwives during the summer.

Instead, their duties will be undertaken by doctors, with only one midwife working throughout the 18 municipalities in parts of the Vega Baja.

The centres affected are in Albatera, Almoradi, Bigastro, Callosa de Segura, Dolores and two at the Álvarez de la Riva Health Centre.

The arrangement - due to holidays being taken by the midwives - has not gone down well with health unions. The Medical Union of the Valencian Community has denounced the heavy workload

which the doctors face. Spokesperson Jose Manuel Peris said: “We doctors have to cover during t h e c o u r s e o f t h e y e a r, b u t i n summer we face overload when holiday leave is taken.”

It’s usual to see a reduction of around 20 per cent of doctors between July and September in health centres with their colleagues assuming their patients during that time.

During the busier times, that can mean seeing up to 50 patients per day.

Doctors across the region have proposed that, as is done in other health departments such as Elche, at least two or three midwives should be available to give the best possible service for those who need their expertise.

Described on TripAdvisor as ‘a magical little cave which disappears hundreds of metres underground into an array of beautiful underwater cave formations’ the Cueva del Agua is a unique place that attracts divers from all over the world. But it’s also had its own history of tragedy with a handful of people losing their lives - including two Guardia Civil officers - since the 1990’s.

The concerns of MC Cartagena have been addressed by experts such as Miguel Angel Garcia, the founder of the Planeta Azul Diving Club in Cabo de Palos.

“Only experienced people have access to the Cueva del Agua,” he said, “who are fully aware of the protocols and security procedures involved when making their safe diving expeditions.”

Overturned car investigated A DRIVER has suffered minor injuries after being involved in a car accident on the road between La Hoya and La Marina.

The woman was able to get out of her vehicle unaided, but has been left with injuries to her neck caused by the seatbelt.

Emergency services were called to the scene but, apart from returning the car to the road after it had overturned, they weren’t otherwise needed. The authorities are now investigating the cause of the accident which didn’t involve any other vehicle.

Small boat runs aground PEOPLE enjoying their morning coffee or a stroll along the beach had nothing else on their lips following the running aground of a small catamaran in Santa Pola.

The incident happened on Monday evening and all those on board the LS Naos were safely rescued, but the problem has been how to recover the vessel from the breakwater on the Vatasa after it collided with it the night before.

Alicante Consulate gets indoor facelift EOPLE visiting the British Consulate in Alicante will enjoy a renovated look featuring images that showcase scenes from UK regions.

The photographs and messages have been selected from the ‘Great’ campaign as well as the new ‘I Travel For’ Visit Britain campaign. Most of the images chosen are UK outdoor scenes, and the consulate took a particular interest in featuring the parts of the UK their customers most frequently come from.

Visitors will be greeted by Llanddwyn Island Lighthouse and Henrhyd Waterfall as they come in.

Once in the waiting room, the Bristol Balloon Festival, a night scene of Edinburgh and a view of the Lake District have replaced extra notice boards.

Other UK scenes have been distributed in meeting rooms and other non-public areas of the consulate.

THE Ministry of Health has announced an update of its app - GVA + Salut - so that users can now control their medication via their mobile phones.

This is an additional feature to the existing ability to make appointments at local health centres.

Ana Barcelo, the Health Minister, was on hand to present the enhancements to the application and stressed that this now allows patients to have greater control of the treatments they have been prescribed.

For example, there is an option to have reminders sent when the patient should next go to the chemist to get their medication, thus avoiding having to reapply for the prescription in case they forget and exceed the 10day collecting deadline.

The app was initially launched in May last year and has already been

Awayday sex offender arrested ment just for one day.

It was only after the man threatened to publish her other photographs online that the naive and frightened girl agreed to meet the man in Torrevieja. They went by bus to the apartment where he allegedly sexually assaulted her.

As soon as she left the building after her ordeal, she went to a nearby bar and raised the alarm.

During the man’s arrest, the Guardia Civil found enough evidence to verify that this was the same man in Torrevieja on the day in question. They are also checking mobile phones they found to see if similar crimes have taken place.

Extra day JULY 25 and July 29 will be holidays in Villajoyosa next year, making a long Moors and Christians fiestas weekend with an additional day, as local holiday Michaelmas on September 29 falls on a Sunday.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers from Alicante have arrested a man in Malaga in connection with sexual offences on a 13-year-old girl in Torrevieja at the end of June.

The Argentine national aged 44, originally made contact with the girl via a social network and where he managed to gain her trust over a period of time.

The girl was allegedly threatened with rape if she didn’t send the man intimate photographs of herself (which she refused to do)... a threat that almost came true after he made the journey from Malaga to Torrevieja where he rented an apart-

Motorway burn out

FIREFIGHTERS based in both Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada were called to put out a car fire on the A-7 motorway close to the Campoamor exit.

There were no injuries reported in the incident but the car involved was completely burnt out.

According to reports in the Spanish media, the two people in the car were heading in the direction of Alicante when there was a minor explosion in the engine. The driver managed to get the car off the road and both escaped before the vehicle burst into flames.

Shoe workers put the boot in WORKERS across the Vega Baja area that work in the footwear industry have joined forces to fight against job insecurity.

Over last weekend, the Association of Women Workers of the Calzado Comarcal de la Vega Baja officially announced their intention to raise a number of issues that include alleged abuse by the employers that sees many only paying an average of €20 per day for 10 hours work.

The meeting took place in a cafe in Callosa de Segura with around 30 people sharing their own experiences in the manufacturing sector. The majority of the workers with issues tend to work at home or in mainly clandestine workshops in poor health and safety conditions.

In addition, most of the workers aren’t on contract and therefore end up not being able to collect pensions. Many also suffer from a number of occupational illnesses and conditions such as bad backs and those connected with the continual inhalation of glue vapours used in shoe manufacture.

He is accused of falsely reporting that his car had been stolen which was then eventually found burned out.

The man apparently only realised it was his car that was on fire when

he was traced by the Guardia Civil. He immediately said that he’d left his car in his garage and therefore it had probably been stolen.

Suspicions were raised when the owner allegedly became aggressive when trying to make a subsequent insurance claim, in addition to numerous contradictions that came to light.

Almost beach bar time SHOULD everything go to plan, beaches under the control of Orihuela will see beach bars and related services open by the end of this month.

The town hall has an-

nounced that the Central Appeals Court has turned down the two appeals that have up until now been holding up to procedures to award the new contracts.

Councillor Luisa Bone said: “We hope to have all the services as soon as possible, now that the doubts about the legality have been dissipated.”

Woman freed after shunt TWO people were injured and three cars were damaged on a road in Santa Pola after a collision that required a 68-year-old woman to be released by firefighters.

The trapped woman was a passenger in the front vehicle of the three car shunt, which al-

so left the 71-year-old driver with a back injury. The woman - who was suffering from pain in her legs and back - was unable to move and so she had to be freed via the hatchback. Both were taken to the Elche General Hospital.

Green grant for Orihuela ORIHUELA Council has received a grant of €332,971 from the European Union (EU) FEDER funds to enable the municipality to maintain and protect its green areas. In particular, it will allow some important improvements to the San Anton Palm Grove.

Money will also be invested in the restoration of the Escorrata aqueduct and the renovation of the wells and existing irrigation system. The area will also see some new landscaping projects and the renewal of brick walls and cane fencing.

by Glenn Scott TORRVIEJA’S mayor, Jose Manuel Dolon, was pleased to host a number of children from the Sahrawi region of Africa who will spend the summer in Torrevieja and neighbouring municipalities.

Under the programme called ‘Vacations in Peace,’ Mayor Dolon thanked a number of local families for their efforts and their generosity in being able to bring these children to this part of Spain.

Carmen Perez, the president of the Saha-

Summer in Torrevieja for Sahrawi children ran Children’s Home Families Association (FANS), said they had been able to bring 10 children this year who will stay with families in Torrevieja, Los Montesinos and Tibi, but hoped to encourage other families to get involved to enable more children to benefit in

future years.

Perez went on to say that without these summer breaks, the children would still be living in refugee camps and having to endure 56ºC temperatures without air con and a shortage of water ... conditions that require them to remain in tents at all times.

Not everyone’s happy with dog beaches ORE than 200 dog o wn e r s made their way to their dedicated beach in Torrevieja to defend the stretch that has been set aside for them.

Since the beaches were opened in Punta Margallo and Cala del Moro last week, there have been a number of conflicts, some of which have needed the diplomatic intervention of the Local Police.

These have essentially been between the dog owners that welcome the

long-awaited beach and other residents and visit o r s t o To r r e v i e j a t h a t have used the affected areas for some time and don’t wish to share them with man’s best friend.

One issue has been the extra numbers of people that have come from other areas to the south of Alicante due to the scarcity of such beaches.

During M o n d a y ’s ‘demonstration,’ there were no reports of any incidents although a small number of contrademonstrations were

spotted in the distance.

They still maintain that many of the dog beach users don’t take any notice of basic hygiene practices such as keeping their pets on a lead and clearing up after them.

The protest, that didn’t need any official authorisation, also saw a n u m b e r o f To r r e v i e j a councillors in attendance, such as Carmen Morate who is responsible for the protection of animals, and Councillor for Beaches, Javier Manzanares.

DIPLOMATIC: Local Police have been called on occasions to deal with dog beach ‘conflicts.’

Local policy continues WITH 10 months still to go before the next local elections, Redovan Council is already planning its budget for 2019, with one policy aimed directly at the local people.

Redovan lead the way in ‘participatory budgets’ which set aside an amount of local taxpayer ’s money to be spent on ideas submitted by the residents.

The scheme was introduced last year (for 2018) with €30,000 available, and the plan is to increase that amount to €40,000 in the upcoming budget, with the possibility of more depending on other spending commitments.

Mayor S pushes for road widening

UN, heat, tourism and traffic jams on the CV-95... summer is here in abundance and the long suffering motorists on that road between Orihuela and Torrevieja are stuck in the jams already.

The biggest hold-ups are on the stretch between Los Balcones and the Torrevieja Hospital which sees, on average, more than 20,400 vehicles and there are currently no plans to solve the problem.

Jose Manuel Dolon, the mayor of Torrevieja, is making representations to the Valencia Government for the affected section of the road to be turned into a dual-carriageway and to have the programme of works included in the 2019 budget.

Traffic on this road has increased by around 2 per cent annually in the last 10 years, especially as more drivers use it to get to the Orihuela Costa and the Zenia Boulevard and thus avoid the motorway tolls.

A consequence of the traffic congestion is the amount of emergency ambulances that often get caught up in the jams going to the hospital.

TODAY YouTube taught me how to make a flamethrower using a can of lubricating oil, an elastic band and a cheap plastic cigarette lighter.

I also learned that Coca-Cola is a fantastic toilet cleaner and also one can remove rust from metal bathroom surfaces with tomato sauce.

Best lesson of all was how to descale a shower head without removing it. Just point the thing downwards, enclose it in a plastic bag filled with vinegar, secure it with an elastic band, and - voila! after a 20-minute soak it will work as well as the day you bought it.

The YouTube tips and tricks videos are called ‘hacks’ and I spent a fascinating half-hour watching things I never thought possible. Some, of course, are just plain dumb. I mean, who in their right mind would uncork a bottle of wine using an electric drill, a screw and a pair of pliers?

I’d gone onto YouTube to see whether anyone had made a simple video showing how to silence

YOUTUBE ‘HACKS’: Build your own flamethrower. the annoying sound our newly-acquired LG smart microwave emits whenever it completes a cooking cycle. All I could find were instructions only a qualified electrical engineer, armed with an array of sophisticated tools, could follow.

We were compelled to get a new microwave when our old one blew up a while back. So off I went to our local branch of MediaMarkt and wandered around in a daze marvelling at the vast selection on display.

At one end of the range were ugly models with basic knobs which your gran would find a doddle to use. At the other end were expensive, futuristic creations with

an array of bewildering touchscreen icons.

Finally, convinced that there is no kitchen device ever created that I cannot master at a stroke, I went for an LG model straight out of Star Wars ... and stumbled at the first hurdle. The bulky instruction manual was made up of only Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian.

Of course, I found English instructions on the Internet, but they might as well have been written in Swahili, and the touchscreen symbols did not appear to match up with the ones on our model.

So I had to revisit the foreign

manual and I was dead chuffed to discover that I could actually understand the instructions better in Spanish, but it was with a furrowed brow that I stared at a tiny illustration that appeared to show a mobile phone being held up against the oven.

Then it all became clear. LG devices with a Smart Diagnosis™ function can communicate problems you may have with their appliances to call centres once a link is established between phone and device. Clever stuff!

Yesterday, I was back at MediaMarkt, this time to replace my husband Marcus’s fitness band which I

broke by accidentally smacking it with a suitcase as it was charging in a wall socket.

After I had chosen the model I wanted - a Huawei - a very helpful assistant told me that, for an extra €20.00, I could have a Huawei body fat scale with a Bluetooth function that would allow us to track our weight and a bunch of other stuff via our iPhones.

The good news was that setting up this sleek little baby was a piece of cake. The bad news was that the Huawei phone app informed me that my weight - 65.7 kg (or 10.34 stones in old money) - was 14 kg higher than it should be for someone of my age (71) and height (5ft 4in).

This depressed me so much that I lost all interest in finding out whether the other numbers recorded were good, merely OK or utterly catastrophic.

Perhaps someone who understands these things might care to tell me whether a body fat percentage of 25.4 per cent, a body mass index of 27.0, a muscle mass of 46.2 kg and a body water percentage of 55.1 - to name but a few - means I’ll live to buy many more gadgets.

Or should my next purchase be a good funeral plan?

by Darren Parmenter ACCORDING to the results of a study undertaken by the Santa Pola Council to develop its strategic plan for the future, it’s the concerns of the youth of the municipality that are seen as a challenge.

Seven out of 10 young people have criticised the lack of leisure facilities and the chance to undertake cultural opportunities.

The information was obtained as a result of a number of meetings and workshops across the municipality involving all ages, and also included the feelings and opinions of those who work for the council.

Among the younger people who took part in the survey, 34 per cent believe that they won’t have any future job opportunities in Santa Pola and are planning to leave the municipality to enhance their chances.

The biggest concern - almost 70 per cent - is the lack of things for the younger element to do in an area that has a higher than average older population and the resulting lower birth rates.

The town council has conducted this survey to find some answers to the hundreds of challenges they face in both the medium and the long term.

Amongst them is an idea to attract more companies to the municipality, encouraging a greater link between the fishing industry and tourism, improving transparency, and giving the citizens a greater say in the decision making.

Record transplant results for Alicante

ALICANTE General Hospital has announced a record number of transplants taking place, with a total of 75 in the first six months of the year.

The specialist Transplant Unit at the hospital (HGUA) carried out 51 kidney and 24 liver transplants between January and the end of June, and a figure that far exceeds the activity carried out in previous years.

According to a statement made by the Ministry of Health, the increase in operations has also resulted in a significant decline in the waiting lists for both organs, with 18.6 per cent for kidneys and 45 per cent for livers.

Donations have also grown during the same time period, going from 19 to 23.

TRAINING: Alicante General Hospital is a major transplant centre.

Hospital manager, Miguel Angel Garcia, said that these figures have been possible “thanks to the generosity of the population of Alicante.”

The head of the HGUA, Carlos de Santiago, also said that “we must give thanks to the efforts of all the hospital professionals to achieve such results which, although already

excellent, have improved again year-on-year.”

The Alicante General Hospital also continues to be a major teaching hospital that, together with the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, acts as training centres for transplant coordinators and health professionals from not only across Spain, but from South America too.

Short news Traffickers imprisoned MURCIA’S Provincial Court has handed down sentences of two years imprisonment to all six defendants following their trial for drug trafficking.

The case dates back to October 2012 when a boat was stopped close to the Playa Mar de Cristal in Cartagena.

During a search of the vessel, police seized 2,758 kilos of hashish that is believed to have been worth €4.2 million on the black market.

Torrevieja U3A in summer mode ORREVIEJA U3A has now settled into its summer recess for most of the group a c t i v i t i e s . I t ’s n o w certainly far too warm for most active outdoor pursuits and even for some of the more relaxed activities.

Pool tragedy averted A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD girl was rushed to the Torrevieja Hospital at the weekend after almost drowning in a swimming pool in the municipality.

The incident unfolded when some of her friends in the pool with her noticed she wasn’t moving in the water and dragged her out to the side.

Emergency paramedics with the Urgent Medical Assistance Service (SAMU) were called and arrived just as the girl had regained consciousness thanks to a family member who had carried out CPR on her.

Major Hollywood star Eastwood is a big fan of jazz - and could be in Murcia to watch son K y l e o n We d n e s d a y a t this year ’s showpiece.

“My parents gave me my taste in music - and my love for jazz,” said Kyle, who is appearing at the San Javier Jazz Festival for the first time.

The Kyle Eastwood Quartet gigs have seen Clint Eastwood in attendance - and talk of the iconic figure could be in town is apace in Murcia.

Kyle, who took steps to follow his father into the movies as an actor, said: “My father was very supportive of me.”

Influenced by major artistes, including jazz star Dizzy Gillespie, Kyle has produced multiple albums, releasing the album From There to Here in 1998.

Kyle, 50, born in Los Angeles, who released The View From Here in 2013, was influenced by father Clint, who released the jazz album Eastwood After Hours in 1997.

Kyle studied film, before turning to a m u s i c c a r e e r, h a v i n g been composer and arranger of Clint Eastwood movie sound tracks Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby a n d G r a n d To r i n o , among others.

Lucky six escape

A LORRY collided with a seven-seater van holding six tourists on the A-7 motorway just a few kilometres from the exit to Alicante-Elche Airport.

The accident happened after a tyre blow-out on the lorry which caused it to cross the carriageway and hit the oncoming people carrier. Remarkably, there were only a few minor injuries reported by the emergency services, although there were severe traffic delays as a result.

Family misfortune

NATIONAL POLICE officers from Cartagena have arrested three men between the ages of 42 and 53 for allegedly selling different types of drugs in the Los Roses neighbourhood.

They were detained in their family home where a supply of cocaine, amphetamines and crystal meth were seized, in addition to two firearms and over €1,000 in cash. This was as a result of an investigation started in February after another group of seven was arrested.

CARMEN MONTON, the Health Minister in the relatively new PSOE government in Madrid, has announced a series of healthcare reforms.

These are to include a gradual return to free prescriptions for state pensioners, and that includes those who receive a pension from another country.

Until around 2012, pensioners always used to get free prescriptions irrespective of their income.

It was at that point that the Partido Popular (PP) - in government at the time - introduced a 10 per cent charge for medication which also applies to people whose gross annual income is €18,000 or less.

It was soon realised after

ALL FREE: State pensioners to once again benefit from reforms. they were introduced that the charges were putting off a number of workers and pensioners from collecting their prescriptions or, indeed, stopping them taking their medication because of the extra expense.

Minister Monton said that ‘the most vulnerable pensioners, especially those on the lowest incomes, will be

Further measures announced include making public healthcare free to everyone who lives in Spain, legally or otherwise, and irrespective of whether they’re at work or a pensioner. It’s estimated that this would benefit a further 280,000 people.

THE search continues for the little monkeys. Just over a month ago, three sick Japanese macaques escaped from a private enclosure in Guardamar del Segura, and despite the Local Police and the Guardia Civil setting traps for them, they’ve yet to be captured.

According to a report in the Spanish media, this is the second time these primates, which were caged at the time, have been able to escape. It’s understood that the animals - a mother and her two young offspring also known as the snow monkey - could be a health hazard to humans in extreme cases by transmitting a number of diseases. They are also suffering from leukaemia.

There have been a number of recent sightings. One was in a fruit orchard close to Rojales and another was near to a Chinese restaurant on the N-332.

Animal experts said that the fact the Japanese macaques are excellent swimmers make it highly likely they have used the nearby river to move around, finding shelter in the empty spaces of commercial areas

where there is food available in bins discarded from restaurants.

If the search efforts are successful, the missing macaques - together with four others that are kept in cages - will travel to Berlin Zoo from where they came from originally.

It is also understood that Guardamar Town Council has been attempting for more than a year to close down the animal enclosure due to the lack of security.

DOOR TO DOOR: New service to benefit families and the elderly.

VER fancied travelling across Spain without the hassle of carrying your luggage around?

Thanks to postal service Correos, this is now a reality... but only if you’re in the Murcia region.

The new service introduced by Correos Express called ‘Equipaq 24’ will collect and deliver luggage,

door-to-door, in less than 24 hours. The initiative is seen to appeal particularly to many large families who tend to travel overloaded or the elderly who don’t fancy lugging a suitcase around with them.

The maximum weight per suitcase is 25 kilos, and will start with a promotional cost of €13.95 per suitcase. The service will see a 24 hour delivery - on work-

ing days - for the Spanish mainland and in 48 hours for the Balearic Islands, although the extension of the scheme into a Saturday is being considered.

The new system will allow the suitcase owners to be kept fully in touch where their luggage is, and in the event of an incident will receive immediate communication from Equipaq 24.

Law ‘reform’ for drug drivers

HROUGHOUT last year, of the more than 1,200 people driving under the influence of drugs in the Murcia region, only four were subjected to criminal proceedings.

These figures have prompted the prosecutor’s office to show a commitment to reform legislation so the mere fact that someone is behind the wheel of a vehicle after drug-taking is an instant crime.

According to a report in the Spanish media, Murcia’s senior prosecutor, Jose Luis Diaz Manzanera, said: “We have a very serious problem when it comes to actually prosecuting the crimes of driving under the influence of drugs ... but not alcohol.”

The vast majority of those testing positive for narcotics undergo a ‘fast trial’ process which allows the drivers to go free with just a fine and a ban from driving.

The case is being made by the senior prosecutor that if someone can be severely

punished for driving without a licence - because it’s assumed that people’s safety is put at risk - then an amendment should be made to the law that highlights the dangers when someone is drugged in charge of a vehicle.

Diaz Manzanera will be meeting officials of the traffic department of the Guardia Civil and the Local Police of different regional municipalities to address this initiative.

UNLIKE gold, ‘time’ is a depreciating asset.

The earlier we invest in time, the more valuable it is, each day its value decreases until it becomes of no use to us, we all eventually ‘run out of time.’

Of course we cannot really compare time to a tangible asset but the concept of doing so is an interesting one. The most valuable gift we can give is our time, as we’ll never get it back.

Those who are fortunate enough to find themselves with plenty of time will appreciate the wonders it can offer, allowing them to choose how to make good use of it, or sadly in many cases, not appreciate its value at all.

A colleague of mine once said to me that he was not looking forward to his family holiday because he was dreading

having to return to work. He was denying himself the joyful happy moments that were approaching, his thoughts were too far in the future and of a negative nature.

There is so much emphasis on time and most of us feel we do not have enough of it. Time seems to fly by when we’re enjoying life and slows down when we’re not, there is also the perception that when we were young life seemed so slow and as we age time passes by so much quicker.

The way to really embrace and maximise time is to appreciate the present moment. Many of us are either dwelling on the past or worrying about the future which really is just a ‘waste of time.’

Our sense of self is then defined and we are never living in the present moment which is all we have. If we are constantly looking to the future and treating the now as a means to an end, we can never truly appreciate life.

If the journey to achieve a goal in life is fraught with difficulties for you and others around you, the perception that a future event will bring us happiness is just that.

Remember that how we think and feel creates our current state of being.

I invite you not to look back with

anger or resentment, or forward in fear or worry. The only thing we have is the now.

If we ask ourselves, where are we? what time is it? The answer will always be, we are here. It is now.

We can be sure of our past but not our future so the phrase ‘there’s no time like the present’ has profound meaning.

It is called present for a reason, it is a gift, be grateful and embrace it.

Growth forecast for Spain revised

THE European Commission (EC) has revised down by one 10th its growth forecast for the Spanish economy in 2018, up to 2.8 per cent.

Behind this reduction, when taken in comparison with the figures for May, are the current tensions in global trade that have undermined confidence, as well as rising oil prices and continued uncertainty in the political situation in a handful of European countries.

Pierre Moscovici, the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, explained during the presentation of the macroeconomic forecasts of summer that trade tensions are ‘the main downside risk’ for the European economy and stressed that, although so far the impact has been ‘limited’ there is the danger of a very dangerous ‘escalation.’

The USA, which opened the prospect of a trade war by imposing tariffs on imports from several countries, is now considering, among other things, imposing tariffs on European cars, which would probably result in a like-for-like response from its trading partners.

The trend in Spain is similar to that of the European Union as a whole, although it is the only one of the large economies in the eurozone that will grow above the average.

The EC also noted in its report that ‘the Spanish economy grew by 3.1 per cent in 2017 and continues showing, so far, few signs of slowdown,’ with a growth of 0.7 per cent in the first

quarter of 2018.

Inflation forecasts were also made, and for Spain it is expected to be 1.8 per cent for this year and dropping to 1.6 per cent in 2019.

SPAIN’S Minister for Work, Magdalena Valerio, has confirmed that following a series of recent changes to the budget, state pensioners will shortly get the arrears they are due.

The payments - within the next few days - will be backdated to January and will delight those affected that have been protesting for a number of months after receiving an annual rise of only 0.25 per cent for the past six years. This was the legal minimum payable under the last PP government’s reforms, and was derided by many as falling some way short of the real cost of living.

It was just two months ago when the PP - in power at the time - attempted to secure votes from some of the opposition parties to get their budget through. It was the Basque National Party (PNV) that gave their support, but only if pensions were increased. The PP had no option but to commit to a 1.35 per cent increase (in addition to the 0.25 per cent) to be backdated to January 2018.

The PSOE had no choice but to leave the budget as it stands, but they have already suggested they will make changes next year which will most likely see further increases to the State pension.

July’s pension is a ‘double month’ since pensioners receive 14 payments per year ... two payments at the start of August and again just before Christmas.

Book burning fest

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com IT is reported that ‘organisations fighting for racial justice’ accuse Amazon book publishers of being distributors for ‘supremacist, racist and Nazi products’.

Experience and common sense tell us that these weasel words are racist as they are solely aimed at removing the rights of ethnic-Europeans.

The intention of these shadowy groups is to remove all material that endorses racial equality for ethnic-Europeans.

Ethnic pride and preference is celebrated with the sole exception of White pride which is now dubbed ‘race hate.’ When ethnic-Europeans express preference for their own kind, as do 7.4 billion other people, it is classed as a criminal offence.

Hundreds of books that once educated and inspired people of all ethnicities have been furtively removed from library

ACCUSING AMAZON: Organisations fighting for racial justice. and book sellers’ shelves as being politically incorrect.

Books and theatre drama such as those of the venerable Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie have been purged or

rewritten. University rag-mags loaded with earthy English humour once raised enormous sums of money for charities.

They are no longer published as their content is deemed po-

litically incorrect. Great television shows like The Black and White Minstrel Show, television sitcoms and epic movies are no longer available.

Amazon has removed hundreds of book titles, many of which are sourced in academia. As a publisher I am familiar with the taboo titles. By no stretch of the imagination could these books be categorised as ‘supremacist,’ ‘racist’ or ‘Nazi.’ They simply challenge the prevailing orthodoxy.

Finnish political analyst Petri Krohn, says, “I have seen many users abandoning Facebook and moving to other social media platforms because they think that Facebook is nowadays too restrictive on their speech.”

In Soviet-occupied Europe, nonconformists used independent printers and underground publishers just as dissident writers in Britain and Europe do today.

Banned and censored dissident authors are now returning in droves to print-on-demand book publishers. The only downside is that orders need to be paid up front. But as print runs are now as low as 100 and priced at less than €5 per copy it would be a wise commercial decision anyway.

Amazon notoriously treats authors and employees as kitchen skivvies. The publisher skims 55 per cent off the cover price, profits further by loading shipping costs and pays its authors a miserly 8 per cent of the cover price after tax.

Sorry, Amazon, you are not ditching dissident authors, dissenting writers are ditching you. Don’t slam the door on your way out.

Kenny’s Postbag Kenny, my partner doesn’t believe in Spirit. I have tried to convince him but he just shrugs off whatever I say. I feel that he has a very strong spiritual energy, but no faith.

Most people do not believe in Spirit, and I have to accept this. I am, however, very happy to belong to such a special minority group. I understand your frustration that you feel that your partner has spiritual skills but doesn’t know how to use them, it happens a lot. Let’s hope that the spiritual message manages to get through to him; maybe he needs to see to believe, so if I can help, I will!

Cambridge University has found that we really might be healthier in the summer after a study of the DNA of more than 16,000 people from around the world showed that immune systems vary with the seasons.

The discovery helps explain why many serious illnesses strike more in the winter when the immune system is lower and why people seem healthier in the summer.

Scientists believe there could be benefits if treatments were tailored to the seasons.

Try yoghurt or probiotic drinks to ease hay fever ARE you struggling in the middle of hay fever season? Well try eating yoghurt or probiotic drinks as research has found that the friendly bacteria they contain can ease symptoms.

The findings are based on a new analysis of 23 studies involving more than 1,900 people. Researchers said 17 of the studies showed a significant clinical benefit from the use of probiotics for hay fever when compared to a placebo.

H a y f e v e r, c a u s e d b y pollen, results in itchy eyes and noses, and swollen and irritated sinuses, and is believed to affect up to one in five people at some point.

Are you in the know?

CURRENTLY, just two in every 10 Spaniards know that there is a vaccine to protect against pneumonia.

That’s the findings from a study carried out by the PneuVUE (Adult Pneumonia Vaccine Understanding Europe).

Their results showed that in Spain much work remains to be done in terms of knowledge of this disease and its prevention.

PneuVUE records the long road that remains to be covered in the knowledge of pneumonia in Spain. The study found that 84 per cent said they know what it is, and 85 per cent identify it as a lung infection.

The problem, the study authors said, is it is not enough to know that pneumonia exists, but it has to be understood and there are gaps in the knowledge of the transmission of the disease, the risk factors for contracting it and the number

of people who die because of it.

In relation to this last point, 41 per cent of the respondents considered that traffic accidents are the greater cause of death in Spain; compared with 3 per cent who selected pneumonia. In fact, pneumonia caused four times more deaths than traffic accidents at the time of the survey.

Sixty-one per cent of the population is unaware that pneumonia can be prevented in addition to being treated, and 78 per cent do not know that it is possible to get a vaccination.

Pneumococcal disease is one of the most common causes of pneumonia. In Spain in 2011, 10,861 hospital admissions were recorded for pneumococcal disease in adults, with an estimated cost of â‚Ź57 million.

Of these, 92 per cent were exclusively for pneumococcal

pneumonia and the infection caused by pneumococcus could be prevented by a vaccination.

The golf course was in a very good condition and the weather, whilst hot, was bearable thanks to the earlier start than usual of 8.45am.

The winners on the day were the team captained by John Wilby, and backed up by husband and wife team of Peter and Sam Brammer.

They managed six birdies with no bogies.

Second and third places were this time decided not on the usual countback over the last nine holes, but by counting the last six. In this case, the team in second place triumphed by 17 shots to 18.

A Mini fit for royalty F

OR a quarter of a century, Goodwood in southern England has hosted one of the most inspirational and accessible events on the global motor sport calendar.

At this year’s edition of the Festival of Speed (FoS), that took place between July 12 and 15, a quite unique Mini was up for auction. The one-off model was created by Oliver Heilmer, Head of Mini Design, and his team for the wedding in May of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex - and presented to one of the couple’s chosen charities, the non-profit organisation Children’s HIV Association (CHIVA).

A host of details dedicated to the happy couple ensure the Mini is a genuine one-off. The roof graphic, for example, is essentially an amalgamation

Every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed gives vehicles from different eras the opportunity to strut their stuff ... from pre-war models to modern-day Formula One machines.

Registrations up ... emissions down FIGURES just released for June 2018 showed a marked increase of 5.2 per cent across the EU, totalling 1.6 million new cars. In terms of volume, the result is the highest June total on record.

In Spain, the demand for cars increased by 8 per cent, just behind France with 9.2 per cent.

Over the first half of 2018, the European passenger car market grew by 2.9 per cent to reach 8,449,247 units. The strong performance of the new EU member states is worth highlighting, as registrations increased by 11.4 per cent so far this year. The figures for Spain were also more than encouraging with an increase in demand of 10.1 per cent during the first six months of this year.

Other statistics from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) showed that car makers have significantly reduced the environmental impact of manufacturing over the last decade.

This is despite the number of cars produced increasing from 11.9 million in 2013 to 17 million four years later.

The new data, recently published in ACEA’s Automobile Industry Pocket Guide, show that total CO2 emissions due to car production fell by almost 24 per cent since 2008.

Finally, as cars have become equipped with ever more features to make them cleaner, safer and smarter, vehicle production has become more complex. Despite this, the energy consumption per car produced decreased by almost 16 per cent over the last 10 years.
