Fire rages through the night

Well done England ON Saturday afternoon Benidorm prepared itself for yet another England World Cup match, with the police presence high and roads closed just prior to the final whistle.

Similarly to the match on Wednesday against Croatia, the fans were on their best behaviour, with the police being left to merely look on as the bars emptied and the crowds went home.

RESIDENTS in Relleu and surrounding areas were awoken in the middle of the night to the sounds of sirens as a fire took hold of forest areas nearby.

The fire, which started in the very early hours of Wednesday morning, quickly spread through the area known as El Mas de la Garrofera. The blaze was so ferocious flames could be seen clearly from Benidorm.

Several firefighting units battled the blaze through the night without air support, who are not authorised to fly after dark.

As soon as daylight broke the air support teams doused the area with water and the fire was classified as stabilised at 10am that same morning, with 20

As the forest and shrub lands in the region become drier through lack of rain, many other fires have been reported, including one in Denia where aircraft and firefighters on the ground managed to extinguish the blaze in a coordinated attack.

Special relationship or wishful thinking?

A FORMER British Ambassador to the USA, Sir Nigel Sheinwald, recently said that the special relationship between Britain and America during the Regan/Thatcher years was a myth.

He explained that Ronald Regan did not support Britain during the Falklands conflict and indeed kept Margaret Thatcher in the dark at the time of the invasion of Grenada, a member of the Commonwealth over which Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State.

The special relationship was first referred to by Winston Churchill but for many years, whilst it appeared to be a good idea, the reality has been that Britain has either been ignored or persuaded to get involved in military campaigns.

Now, of the 29 members of NATO who undertook to spend 2 per cent of GDP on defence, just five actually do so and they are USA (3.6), Greece (2.4), Estonia (2.1), UK (2.1) and Poland (2).

As a businessman, rather than a statesman, President Trump suggested at the latest NATO summit that the spend by the USA was in order to protect the likes of Germany, a country which is now completely dependent upon Russia for supplies of natural gas.

He effectively asked why America should spend so much money to help defend Germany against Russia for Germany to spend billions of euros helping to keep the Russian economy strong.

It is a somewhat disingenuous argument as the amount spent is not compulsory and is not paid over to NATO but is the amount spent on the military of each country by their defence departments.

After having fired a few telling shots to members of NATO and the EU, Donald Trump made it to the UK to meet his ‘new, old friend’ Theresa May who must have been mortified that he arranged to give an interview to The Sun newspaper, which was published as he arrived for dinner with the prime minister and her husband.

He made it clear that in his opinion, her blueprint for the UK divorce with the European Union would make it impossible to sign bilateral trade deal with the US. Commenting on the Chequers plan, which would keep the UK aligned with the EU on many trade regulations he said that accepted by the EU it ‘will definitely affect trade with the United States, unfortunately in a negative way.’

Adding, “I would have done it much differently, I actually told Theresa May how to do it but she didn’t agree, she didn’t listen to me. She wanted to go a different route.”

To say that the timing of his interview, and indeed entire visit, was unfortunate would be an understatement and just goes to support the suggestion that there is no special relationship, although he did later suggest that his comment was ‘fake news’ until the recorded interview was published.

HE mayor of Finestrat, Juan Francisco Perez, has spoken out about the lack of doctors in the town, and the many delays with the ambulance service.

With the arrival of the summer, the mayor detailed the deficiencies of the service provided by the Ministry of Health in the town’s two medical centres, one in the Finestrat main town and the other located in the La Cala area.

Citing problems with sickness or holiday cover the mayor said: “if one of the two doctors are missing, the paediatrician or the p r i m a r y c a r e d o c t o r, they are not replaced.

Museum plan BENITACHELL Council voted in favour of a €374,301 credit modification that will allow the town hall to spend €130,000 on acquiring two properties in the Plaza de la Iglesia to convert into a museum.

‘Every confidence in justice system’ CESAR SANCHEZ emerged smiling from court after almost an hour with a Denia judge.

Calpe’s mayor, who is also president of the Diputacion - Alicante’s Provincial Council was questioned under caution regarding claims of misappropriation of funds and coercion from a former municipal employee.

Sanchez had spent most of the morning in Denia as his session with the judge was held up, and it was after 11.30am when he was called.

The accusations go back to the municipal elections of 2015 when, according to the former worker, he forced her to work on behalf of the Partido Popular, although she was paid by the town hall.

Sanchez threatened to sack her if she refused, the woman claimed.

Although smiling and relaxed, he was reluctant to talk when confronted by the media,saying he was ‘calm’ and had ‘every confidence’ in the justice system.

Refusing to go into further details he said that it was now necessary to ‘let the judge do her work.’

HE tourist who fell close to 25 metres from the Santa Barbara Castle in Alicante while taking photographs is still in a critical condition one week later.

The young 23-year-old Italian has remained in the intensive care unit of the Alicante General Hospital and, according to a report in the Spanish media, has shown no improvement in his condition following the fall that left him with extremely serious injuries.

The major injury is to his head, and such is

‘Selfie’ tourist still critical the severity of his condition that doctors may have to rethink their original plans of repatriating the man to Italy as they consider that he may die during the transfer.

The accident took place last Friday morning when the man slipped down the area t h a t i s v e r y d i ff i c u l t t o access, known as the

Baluarte de la Mina.

It needed local firefighters and a helicopter to rescue him and take him to the Alicante General Hospital where he was operated on by a team of neurosurgeons.

Initial investigations into the incident suggest that it was purely an accident and happened as the young tourist was taking a selfie.

Fire chief in call for more hydrants FOLLOWING the latest series of fires that have broken out in both Denia and Javea, the head of the local fire service has asked for an urgent meeting with the water authorities.

The fires have exposed some major deficiencies in the infrastructure in place to help the firefighters and volunteers in their work ... the main one being is that there aren’t enough hydrants.

After a coordination meeting held on Monday in Javea, the mayor of Denia, Vicent Grimalt, revealed that the fire chief, Javier Fayos, had requested immediate talks with the company responsible for supplying water to the municipality.

The main demand was for a new hydrant to be located in the lower part of the Cami de las Colonias which allows access to the Montgo from Denia.

Mayor Grimalt said that one of the actions the municipalities should take is to try to adapt the access roads and to provide the extra hydrants to enable all the personnel to carry out their work more efficiently and professionally, and in the process give greater security to the local people in the event of fires.

Alicante Consulate gets indoor facelift EOPLE visiting the British Consulate in Alicante will enjoy a renovated look featuring images that showcase scenes from UK regions.

The photographs and messages have been selected from the ‘Great’ campaign as well as the new ‘I Travel For’ Visit Britain campaign. Most of the images chosen are UK outdoor scenes, and the consulate took a particular interest in featuring the parts of the UK their customers most frequently come from.

Visitors will be greeted by Llanddwyn Island Lighthouse and Henrhyd Waterfall as they come in.

Once in the waiting room, the Bristol Balloon Festival, a night scene of Edinburgh and a view of the Lake District have replaced extra notice boards.

Other UK scenes have been distributed in meeting rooms and other non-public areas of the consulate.

Updates to health app helps patients

THE Ministry of Health has announced an update of its app - GVA + Salut - so that users can now control their medication via their mobile phones.

This is an additional feature to the existing ability to make appointments at local health centres.

Ana Barcelo, the Health Minister, was on hand to present the enhancements to the application and stressed that this now allows patients to have greater control of the treatments they have been prescribed.

For example, there is an option to have reminders sent when the patient should next go to the chemist to get their medication, thus avoiding having to reapply for the prescription in case they forget and exceed the 10day collecting deadline.

The app was initially launched in May last year and has already been

In addition to the reminders, each patient can also consult which medications they have, how long they should take them for, when they should be taken, and guidelines on how to take them.

UST as the busiest time of the year gets underway for the Alicante TRAM service, the lift to the platforms on the network’s busiest station has broken down ... and there is no date as to when it’s going to be repaired.

There are still two escalators and a set of concrete stairs to link the ticket hall and the entrance to the platforms at the Plaza de los Luceros station, but with the fault in the lift there is now no access for people with reduced mobility or carrying heavy luggage.

FAULT: Passengers now must use escalators or a nearby station.

The TRAM operators, FGV, have advised passengers to access the service by using the next station on the route, Marq.

Technicians are looking at the structure of the allglass lift to try and find the reasons for the breakdown which, according to a report in the

The choir, who held two concerts at the Cueva de las Calavares in Benidoleig earlier this year, were supported by the Proteccion Civil members.

They transported and set up 200 chairs, marshalled the traffic, parked cars and en-

sured the public’s safety by escorting them across the road to the cave.

Mike Evans, choir president, said: “Without their help we could not have held these concerts.”

The donation will enable the Proteccion Civil, who are predominantly a voluntary service, to purchase more uniforms and equipment.

THOUSANDS took to the streets of Benidorm last week dressed in orange to mark Prince William of Orange’s victory over King James II at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.

The parade - which evokes strong feeling both ways amongst many - marched peacefully through the resort starting and finishing at the Ibrox bar.

With a police escort the drums banged and many played on their fifes (similar to the piccolo), stopping occasionally for refreshments.

The march has been an event in Benidorm since 2001, although in 2005 it was banned and organisers were fined €6,000 for defying a local government ban.

Archaeological funding ALFAZ DEL PI can now continue with their excavations at the Villa Romana site situated in Albir, thanks to funding from FEDER. The mayor, Vicente Arques, announced that funding from a new European aid of €113,000, through the

Operational Programme FEDER 20142020 of the region, aimed at the conservation and recovery of cultural and heritage assets, has enabled the work to begin.

The project’s cost of €250,000 will be shared equally by the council and FEDER.

Helping hands

Spanish media, is not mechanical.

The plan is to completely disassemble the lift box and carry out a thorough investigation before putting it back together again.

The Luceros Station welcomes more than 1.7 million passengers annually and is the central hub of the TRAM network.

It’s also the closest to the AVE high-speed network station in Alicante, and so the absence of the lift has already caused disruption to people loaded with suitcases on their way to Benidorm in particular.

THE closing ceremony of the Denia fiesta, a grand firework display from the castle, used more than 370 kilos of gunpowder and lasted almost 20 minutes.

The pyro-musical event followed on from a large parade of floats.

BENITACHELL Council has approved the purchase of two properties in the church square, with plans to use them to create a museum for the town.

A total of €374,301 has been budgeted for, with €130,000 going towards the acquisition of two traditional houses and the balance towards transforming them.

Child ‘abductors’ caught in Altea

GUARDIA CIVIL officers have arrested a young couple in Altea in connection with alleged child abduction from a hospital in Mallorca.

They had taken their newborn baby from the intensive care department at the University Hosptial of Son Espases on the Balearic Island, and according to a report in the Spanish media were detained at Altea’s train station.

The couple - aged 20 and 23 - had originally taken the

new born child and drove it away at high speed on a motorcycle. At one point, they were spotted on the wrong side of the carriageway and later the baby fell from their arms endangering its wellbeing.

The judge has removed the baby and two other children from the custody of the woman, and it’s understood that medical examinations showed that all three had tested positive for cannabis.

Elaine Horton from Jalon Valley Help was delighted to accept the cheque on her recent visit to the Javea Cancer Care organisation, where she was also able to update them on the developments of the unit within Hospital Ferris, Alicante.

In 2017 the decision was made for a suite of three stand-alone rooms to be funded, which should be available by the end of the year once a lift upgrade has been completed.

AS temperatures soared recently, a man hiking at 2pm with two friends on Montgo was overtaken by heatstroke. Aided by firemen, he was airlifted by helicopter to the fire station and then to Denia Hospital.

Hospital Ferris, within the Fontilles sociosanitary complex, is defined as a Hospital Rehabilitation Centre specialising in care and rehabilitation for cancer patients as well as those convalescing after chronic illness.

Renaming a possibility CALPE Council’s recent meeting discussed the removal of five name plates around the town, which had been dedicated to the now ex-president of the region, Eduardo Zaplana.

In a motion signed by the

opposition parties it was agreed that when there is a final ruling, if he is sentenced for his involvement in the Erial trial, the name plates honouring him should be removed.

rently in prison waiting for judgment.

He was arrested in May after two years of investigation. The ex-leader of the PP is accused of several counts of bribery, fraud in recruitment and prosecution, falsification of documents, money laundering, embezzlement and membership of an illegal criminal group.

Political stink STAFF at the Benidorm Town Hall were forced to leave their desks as a strong stench wafted through many of the offices. Workers and officials spent over two hours away from their desks, whilst they waited for maintenance workers to source the problem. A blocked pipe was found to be the cause of the unbearable smell and repairs were quickly made.

By the end of the working day everyone had returned to their stations, albeit still feeling a bit queasy.

CARMEN MONTON, the Health Minister in the relatively new PSOE government in Madrid, has announced a series of healthcare reforms.

These are to include a gradual return to free prescriptions for state pensioners, and that includes those who receive a pension from another country.

Until around 2012, pensioners always used to get free prescriptions irrespective of their income.

It was at that point that the Partido Popular (PP) - in government at the time - introduced a 10 per cent charge for medication which also applies to people whose gross annual income is €18,000 or less.

It was soon realised after

Minister Monton said that ‘the most vulnerable pensioners, especially those on the lowest incomes, will be

Further measures announced include making public healthcare free to everyone who lives in Spain, legally or otherwise, and irrespective of whether they’re at work or a pensioner. It’s estimated that this would benefit a further 280,000 people.

TODAY YouTube taught me how to make a flamethrower using a can of lubricating oil, an elastic band and a cheap plastic cigarette lighter.

I also learned that Coca-Cola is a fantastic toilet cleaner and also one can remove rust from metal bathroom surfaces with tomato sauce.

Best lesson of all was how to descale a shower head without removing it. Just point the thing downwards, enclose it in a plastic bag filled with vinegar, secure it with an elastic band, and - voila! after a 20-minute soak it will work as well as the day you bought it.

The YouTube tips and tricks videos are called ‘hacks’ and I spent a fascinating half-hour watching things I never thought possible. Some, of course, are just plain dumb. I mean, who in their right mind would uncork a bottle of wine using an electric drill, a screw and a pair of pliers?

I’d gone onto YouTube to see whether anyone had made a simple video showing how to silence

YOUTUBE ‘HACKS’: Build your own flamethrower. the annoying sound our newly-acquired LG smart microwave emits whenever it completes a cooking cycle. All I could find were instructions only a qualified electrical engineer, armed with an array of sophisticated tools, could follow.

We were compelled to get a new microwave when our old one blew up a while back. So off I went to our local branch of MediaMarkt and wandered around in a daze marvelling at the vast selection on display.

At one end of the range were ugly models with basic knobs which your gran would find a doddle to use. At the other end were expensive, futuristic creations with

an array of bewildering touchscreen icons.

Finally, convinced that there is no kitchen device ever created that I cannot master at a stroke, I went for an LG model straight out of Star Wars ... and stumbled at the first hurdle. The bulky instruction manual was made up of only Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian.

Of course, I found English instructions on the Internet, but they might as well have been written in Swahili, and the touchscreen symbols did not appear to match up with the ones on our model.

So I had to revisit the foreign

manual and I was dead chuffed to discover that I could actually understand the instructions better in Spanish, but it was with a furrowed brow that I stared at a tiny illustration that appeared to show a mobile phone being held up against the oven.

Then it all became clear. LG devices with a Smart Diagnosis™ function can communicate problems you may have with their appliances to call centres once a link is established between phone and device. Clever stuff!

Yesterday, I was back at MediaMarkt, this time to replace my husband Marcus’s fitness band which I

broke by accidentally smacking it with a suitcase as it was charging in a wall socket.

After I had chosen the model I wanted - a Huawei - a very helpful assistant told me that, for an extra €20.00, I could have a Huawei body fat scale with a Bluetooth function that would allow us to track our weight and a bunch of other stuff via our iPhones.

The good news was that setting up this sleek little baby was a piece of cake. The bad news was that the Huawei phone app informed me that my weight - 65.7 kg (or 10.34 stones in old money) - was 14 kg higher than it should be for someone of my age (71) and height (5ft 4in).

This depressed me so much that I lost all interest in finding out whether the other numbers recorded were good, merely OK or utterly catastrophic.

Perhaps someone who understands these things might care to tell me whether a body fat percentage of 25.4 per cent, a body mass index of 27.0, a muscle mass of 46.2 kg and a body water percentage of 55.1 - to name but a few - means I’ll live to buy many more gadgets.

Or should my next purchase be a good funeral plan?

Record transplant results for Alicante

ALICANTE General Hospital has announced a record number of transplants taking place, with a total of 75 in the first six months of the year.

The specialist Transplant Unit at the hospital (HGUA) carried out 51 kidney and 24 liver transplants between January and the end of June, and a figure that far exceeds the activity carried out in previous years.

According to a statement made by the Ministry of Health, the increase in operations has also resulted in a significant decline in the waiting lists for both organs, with 18.6 per cent for kidneys and 45 per cent for livers.

Donations have also grown during the same time period, going from 19 to 23.

TRAINING: Alicante General Hospital is a major transplant centre.

Hospital manager, Miguel Angel Garcia, said that these figures have been possible “thanks to the generosity of the population of Alicante.”

The head of the HGUA, Carlos de Santiago, also said that “we must give thanks to the efforts of all the hospital professionals to achieve such results which, although already

excellent, have improved again year-on-year.”

The Alicante General Hospital also continues to be a major teaching hospital that, together with the Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, acts as training centres for transplant coordinators and health professionals from not only across Spain, but from South America too.

Helping four legged friends THE Giving4Giving charity has been continuing to raise funds for local causes.

Despite most of us struggling in the summer heat, the four Giving4Giving charity shops and the furniture warehouse have raised enough for a very generous donation to be made to Doggie Angells.

Receiving the gift for the animal charity was Dee and two volunteers, Montse and Christine.

Gary said: “We were delighted to be able to make this donation, which now brings the total of funds raised for many good causes to €101,000, a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible.”

Another year, another display ALTEA Town Hall donated €30,000 to the Cofradia del Castell association which organises the August firework display each year.

This will help the Cofradia cover an important part of the outlay for the mammoth display on the La Olla beach which this year will take place on August 11.

At the recent signing of the collaboration agreement Altea’s mayor Jaume Llinares thanked the Cofradia, which is headed by Jose Perez, for the work its members have been carrying out over the last 32 years The spectacle is one of the summer’s biggest tourist events, not only for Altea but also the Valencian Community and each year more than 50,000 people pour into the town to witness the display that always starts promptly at midnight.

During the summer, until the beginning of September, the art will be on display on and around the buildings, with this year ’s theme being about equality.

Photographs, drawings and other art forms have been designed by artists of all ages, from schoolchildren to professionals.

Various local groups have contributed to the street art including members from the Social Centre for the Elderly, the Ifach Fotocly, the Mite Boronat Occupational Centre and the Women’s Association for Equality.

Following on from the success of the event last year the artwork is expected to encourage more visitors to Calpe, something that the councillor for Culture, Pilar Cabrera, is keen to promote.

The councillor said: “Our objective is to attract visitors to Calpe, so that in addition to enjoying its beaches you also get to know the charms of the old town.”

The art is on display in the

streets of Purisima, Ermita, Torreones, San Jose, Balmes, Justicia, Llibertat, Vicente Gallard, Garcia Ortiz and Sant Roc and the squares of Miguel Rosello, Beato Francisco Sendra and dels Mestres.

CALPE will host a concert in August, welcoming the renowned Gente de Zona for a one night only performance in the town.

The Caribbean feel evening will include more than six hours of DJs, Salsa and bachata dance groups plus a vast array of typical Cuban dishes.

Gente de Zona have had a very successful tour, spanning from Europe to the United States. They have also worked with artists such as Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez.

The group, who released their new single ‘Te Duele’ just a few weeks ago, already have over 10 million views on YouTube as the song rises to be one of the successes for the summer 2018.

The event, on August 15 from 8pm at the Parc de la Creativitat, has been organised by Calpe Council and the Association of Moors and Christians, with Gente de Zona being sponsored by Marc Anthony.

Public path blocked THE Asociaciacio Cultural Ecologista (ACEC) has denounced a property owner who has blocked a public right of way with a fence and wall.

The probl em arose w hen someone w ho w as recently taking a trek along an old route, passing through the La Casanova, found themselves facing a high wall and fencing, unable to continue on their walk.

The ACEC investigation into the change of land access has involved taking video footage and presenting it to the local council. Their investigation has also raised several questions as to how the land owner gained permission to block the public right of passage which is on rustic land, and what other such events have occurred on old walking routes.

What a year Credit: Sharon Bell

STUDENTS and staff at Elians British School ended their academic year having had a very busy and exciting time. With their summer school set to finish on July 27, staff and pupils are looking forward to a relaxing August with family and friends.

All students worked hard to finish their exams whilst raising money for charitable causes.

This year Sharon Bell, teaching assistant, organised a ‘Green Team’ to help deal with environmental issues within the school and the local community.

In April they promoted WWF’s Earth Hour, resulting in many hotels and buildings in Benidorm switching off their lights to highlight global warming.

In May pupils did a sponsored run for the Race for Hunger campaign raising an amazing total of over €1,400.

There was one possible blemish to the year when a former staff member complained that they had been

Sharon Bell with some of the pupils at the cake sale. unfairly dismissed but the matter was resolved out of court to the apparent satisfaction of both parties.

In the coming academic year, with the support of the La Nucia Town Hall, pupils will be creating a bee garden, having raised €300 at a cake sale to help fund the exciting new project.

Once the garden is established, near to the school, the environmental officer in La Nucia, who is a keen bee

keeper, will place a number of hives nearby to be used as an outdoor classroom for students to learn about nature, and the importance of bees.

Sharon and the staff at Elian’s said: “We would like to thank everyone who has helped with all our events this year especially our amazing Green Team and wish all our students and families a very lovely summer.”

MEETING UP: Chaps chattering.

EVERY Thursday, the gentlemen of the U3A Marina Baixa, meet at the popular Tio Leo, in Albir, for the 3C’s - Chaps Chatter and Coffee Group.

Everyone is welcome and the conversations can be about anything.

Naturally the recent chats have been about the football, but because of the results, it probably won’t be talked about for quite a while!!

The group are continuing throughout the summer, but as Tio Leo is closed during August, for that month only, the Chaps will meet at Ra Ra (opposite Mercadona).

U3A Marina Baixa holds its general

meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at the auditorium in the Casa de Cultura Alfaz del Pi. The next meeting is on Monday. Doors open at 10am and the desks close at 10.50am for a prompt 11am start.

Please come early to sign in and get your seat and these general meetings are always on the fourth Monday of the month except that there will be no meeting in August.

Growth forecast for Spain revised

THE European Commission (EC) has revised down by one 10th its growth forecast for the Spanish economy in 2018, up to 2.8 per cent.

Behind this reduction, when taken in comparison with the figures for May, are the current tensions in global trade that have undermined confidence, as well as rising oil prices and continued uncertainty in the political situation in a handful of European countries.

Pierre Moscovici, the European Commissioner for Economic Affairs, explained during the presentation of the macroeconomic forecasts of summer that trade tensions are ‘the main downside risk’ for the European economy and stressed that, although so far the impact has been ‘limited’ there is the danger of a very dangerous ‘escalation.’

The USA, which opened the prospect of a trade war by imposing tariffs on imports from several countries, is now considering, among other things, imposing tariffs on European cars, which would probably result in a like-for-like response from its trading partners.

The trend in Spain is similar to that of the European Union as a whole, although it is the only one of the large economies in the eurozone that will grow above the average.

The EC also noted in its report that ‘the Spanish economy grew by 3.1 per cent in 2017 and continues showing, so far, few signs of slowdown,’ with a growth of 0.7 per cent in the first

quarter of 2018.

Inflation forecasts were also made, and for Spain it is expected to be 1.8 per cent for this year and dropping to 1.6 per cent in 2019.

SPAIN’S Minister for Work, Magdalena Valerio, has confirmed that following a series of recent changes to the budget, state pensioners will shortly get the arrears they are due.

The payments - within the next few days - will be backdated to January and will delight those affected that have been protesting for a number of months after receiving an annual rise of only 0.25 per cent for the past six years. This was the legal minimum payable under the last PP government’s reforms, and was derided by many as falling some way short of the real cost of living.

It was just two months ago when the PP - in power at the time - attempted to secure votes from some of the opposition parties to get their budget through. It was the Basque National Party (PNV) that gave their support, but only if pensions were increased. The PP had no option but to commit to a 1.35 per cent increase (in addition to the 0.25 per cent) to be backdated to January 2018.

The PSOE had no choice but to leave the budget as it stands, but they have already suggested they will make changes next year which will most likely see further increases to the State pension.

July’s pension is a ‘double month’ since pensioners receive 14 payments per year ... two payments at the start of August and again just before Christmas.

SCOUTING: Plans for a Costa Blanca group depend on volunteers.

DO you remember being a Scout or a Guide, or going further back, a Cub or a Brownie?

Or perhaps you were a leader with Scouts or Guides? There has been British Scouting abroad since 1908 in Gibraltar, 1909 in Paris and Oporto and 1910 in other parts of Europe. Today, we have over 57 Scout Groups in 26 countries, worldwide.

British Scouting was formed to provide scouting for the children of British

servicemen serving abroad, civil servants, oil workers etc, so that their children on return to UK could slip seamlessly back into scouting. Despite the passing years, there is still a demand for the group and British Scouting has become an established part of the expat community worldwide, just like other British social activities and clubs.

There are plans to start a Scout Group here on the Costa Blanca. You do not

need any experience of Scouting, as full training will be given, but you must want to work as a volunteer, supporting young people to gain life skills whilst also having fun.

Susan Shaw has recently come here from the UK and is part of British Scouting Overseas and in order to start a new scout group, she needs a minimum of two leaders in each section, so she’s appealing for adults to help her to get it off the ground.

Interested? You will need to fill in an application form and go through a vetting process to ensure that you are suitable to work with children.

At this stage Susan is looking for adults only, because until they have qualified leaders, they cannot work with the young people. In addition, if you are not keen on working with the young people, they also need an executive committee to help resource the group, a chairman/woman, a secretary, a Treasurer and fundraiser, as a minimum.

Book burning fest

keyboardcosmetics@gmail.com IT is reported that ‘organisations fighting for racial justice’ accuse Amazon book publishers of being distributors for ‘supremacist, racist and Nazi products’.

Experience and common sense tell us that these weasel words are racist as they are solely aimed at removing the rights of ethnic-Europeans.

The intention of these shadowy groups is to remove all material that endorses racial equality for ethnic-Europeans.

Ethnic pride and preference is celebrated with the sole exception of White pride which is now dubbed ‘race hate.’ When ethnic-Europeans express preference for their own kind, as do 7.4 billion other people, it is classed as a criminal offence.

Hundreds of books that once educated and inspired people of all ethnicities have been furtively removed from library

ACCUSING AMAZON: Organisations fighting for racial justice. and book sellers’ shelves as being politically incorrect.

Books and theatre drama such as those of the venerable Enid Blyton and Agatha Christie have been purged or

rewritten. University rag-mags loaded with earthy English humour once raised enormous sums of money for charities.

They are no longer published as their content is deemed po-

litically incorrect. Great television shows like The Black and White Minstrel Show, television sitcoms and epic movies are no longer available.

Amazon has removed hundreds of book titles, many of which are sourced in academia. As a publisher I am familiar with the taboo titles. By no stretch of the imagination could these books be categorised as ‘supremacist,’ ‘racist’ or ‘Nazi.’ They simply challenge the prevailing orthodoxy.

Finnish political analyst Petri Krohn, says, “I have seen many users abandoning Facebook and moving to other social media platforms because they think that Facebook is nowadays too restrictive on their speech.”

In Soviet-occupied Europe, nonconformists used independent printers and underground publishers just as dissident writers in Britain and Europe do today.

Banned and censored dissident authors are now returning in droves to print-on-demand book publishers. The only downside is that orders need to be paid up front. But as print runs are now as low as 100 and priced at less than €5 per copy it would be a wise commercial decision anyway.

Amazon notoriously treats authors and employees as kitchen skivvies. The publisher skims 55 per cent off the cover price, profits further by loading shipping costs and pays its authors a miserly 8 per cent of the cover price after tax.

Sorry, Amazon, you are not ditching dissident authors, dissenting writers are ditching you. Don’t slam the door on your way out.

UNLIKE gold, ‘time’ is a depreciating asset.

The earlier we invest in time, the more valuable it is, each day its value decreases until it becomes of no use to us, we all eventually ‘run out of time.’

Of course we cannot really compare time to a tangible asset but the concept of doing so is an interesting one. The most valuable gift we can give is our time, as we’ll never get it back.

Those who are fortunate enough to find themselves with plenty of time will appreciate the wonders it can offer, allowing them to choose how to make good use of it, or sadly in many cases, not appreciate its value at all.

A colleague of mine once said to me that he was not looking forward to his family holiday because he was dreading

having to return to work. He was denying himself the joyful happy moments that were approaching, his thoughts were too far in the future and of a negative nature.

There is so much emphasis on time and most of us feel we do not have enough of it. Time seems to fly by when we’re enjoying life and slows down when we’re not, there is also the perception that when we were young life seemed so slow and as we age time passes by so much quicker.

The way to really embrace and maximise time is to appreciate the present moment. Many of us are either dwelling on the past or worrying about the future which really is just a ‘waste of time.’

Our sense of self is then defined and we are never living in the present moment which is all we have. If we are constantly looking to the future and treating the now as a means to an end, we can never truly appreciate life.

If the journey to achieve a goal in life is fraught with difficulties for you and others around you, the perception that a future event will bring us happiness is just that.

VALUABLE TIME: Enjoy the present, it’s a ‘gift.’ had the day before, this merely equates to living in the past and getting the same result in our life. Instead of living our lives in this habitual pattern, we can create our future by changing that pattern, and choose to be in the moment. If we can be consistent, we will see a change.

Remember that how we think and feel creates our current state of being.

I invite you not to look back with

anger or resentment, or forward in fear or worry. The only thing we have is the now.

If we ask ourselves, where are we? what time is it? The answer will always be, we are here. It is now.

We can be sure of our past but not our future so the phrase ‘there’s no time like the present’ has profound meaning.

It is called present for a reason, it is a gift, be grateful and embrace it.

Are you in the know?

CURRENTLY, just two in every 10 Spaniards know that there is a vaccine to protect against pneumonia.

That’s the findings from a study carried out by the PneuVUE (Adult Pneumonia Vaccine Understanding Europe).

Their results showed that in Spain much work remains to be done in terms of knowledge of this disease and its prevention.

PneuVUE records the long road that remains to be covered in the knowledge of pneumonia in Spain. The study found that 84 per cent said they know what it is, and 85 per cent identify it as a lung infection.

The problem, the study authors said, is it is not enough to know that pneumonia exists, but it has to be understood and there are gaps in the knowledge of the transmission of the disease, the risk factors for contracting it and the number of people who die because of it.

In relation to this last point, 41 per cent of the respondents considered that traffic accidents are the greater cause of death in Spain; compared with 3 per cent who selected pneumonia. In fact, pneumonia caused four times more deaths than traffic accidents at the time of the survey.

Sixty-one per cent of the population is unaware that pneumonia can be prevented in addition to being treated, and 78 per cent do not know that it is possible to get a vaccination.

Pneumococcal disease is one of the most common causes of pneumonia. In Spain in 2011, 10,861 hospital admissions were recorded for pneumococcal disease in adults, with an estimated cost of €57 million.

Of these, 92 per cent were exclusively for pneumococcal pneumonia and the infection caused by pneumococcus could be prevented by a vaccination.

Gaslighting is becoming more and more recognised as an abusive technique used to manipulate and control another person for self-gain.

If you’ve ever experienced someone playing mind games on you or those around you, you will know how difficult it is to be believed or to provide evidence as the gaslighter is very accomplished at this technique.

The perpetrator will appear as charming as possible to the people in your life as this is part of their strategy, making it even more difficult to be believed by people that know you and that what you are saying is true. Taking some of the examples listed on Psychology Today, I will explain what to look out for.

Gaslighters will tell copious lies, they will be blatant in order to set you up for not being quiet sure if anything they say is true or not. Self-doubt, this will keep you on the back foot, which becomes tiring. Even when you have clear proof of their lies they will convincingly deny your reality and over time you may start believing and accepting what they say and do.

They will cultivate a divide and conquer approach to your treasured rela-

Punishment is an underlying strategy for their skilled techniques of gaslighting, confronting the gaslighter is often self-defeating as they will continue to deny their actions. They will likely be full of surprise and sorrow if you confront them but this is simply another technique to make you feel temporarily secure and acknowledged. Their words do not match their actions, you may even receive random compliments, these are cleverly designed to throw you off and confuse you of their motivations.

You will constantly be blamed for everything and the divide and conquer rule will be applied to set you up for trouble with important relationships finding against you. They will say ‘you’re crazy or mad’ they will even accuse you of being the liar.

My advice to you is to keep your awareness open to the techniques of the gaslighter and hold on to your reality and evidence, keep it safe and refer to it when you start to question or doubt yourself.

Gemini. Tread carefully around something that could be a white elephant right now. You are looking to make changes in your schedule and are holding out for that chance to show others what you are capable of. Uranus, planet of invention brushes up to the Sun, in cahoots with Saturn, and this illuminates your innermost endearing powers.

Sagitarius. Saturn takes on the Sun, using usual delaying tactics to hold you back from a snap decision which is what is really called for right now. More or e - i root-changing verbs Basic Spanish for everyday needs

WE finished off last week’s article on our third category of root-changing verbs, namely ‘e to i.’ This root change only occurs in the ‘-ir’ group of verbs and, as we said, some of the most common ones are: decir (to say, to tell), pedir (to ask for, to order), medir (to measure), seguir (to follow, to continue) and repetir (to repeat).

We looked at the example ‘pedir’ (to ask for, to request, to order) and that is where we will start off from today, as it is a nice clear one to understand: pido pides pide

As you can see, there are certain constants here which apply to all root-

ing verb, but the first person singular is ‘tengo,’ which of course we all know means ‘I have.’ The point was made quite clearly that just because there is a variation in the first person singular, this does not mean that the verb can be counted as ‘irregular,’ as they follow regular patterns in all other changes.

changing verbs. The first is, of course, that the endings are the same as for all ‘-ir’ verbs. The second is that the root changes, in this case ‘e to i,’ occur in the first, second and third persons singular and the third person plural (pido, pides, pide, piden).

The first and second persons plural revert to the same root as the infinitive of the verb (pedimos, pedís). Finally, the beat or emphasis in each case falls on the changed roots where they occur, and on the endings ‘-imos and -ís’ where the root change doesn’t occur.

All of that is identical in principle to all other root-changing verbs. The part that perhaps makes these ‘e to i’ verbs appear more confusing is that there is an inverse relationship between what is happening to the root and what is happening to the endings, since the ‘-ir’ verb endings involve the letter ‘e’ except in first and second persons plural where they involve the letter ‘i’ giving us ‘pides’ (you order singular you)and ‘pedís’ (you order plural you).

Now, this same ‘one-off’ sort of variation occurs with some or our ‘i to e’ root changing verbs. By far the most common is the verb ‘decir’ (to say, to tell). We hear this used constantly, so it’s one we need to understand properly. This is how it goes: Now, quite a few articles ago I mentioned the fact that there are some verbs in all of these categories and groups, both standard and root-changing, which ‘do their own thing’ in the first person singular.

We looked at one or two examples like ‘hacer’ (to do) ... ‘hago’ (I do) and ‘salir’ (to go out) ... ‘salgo’ (I go out).

Another very familiar example is ‘tener.’ This is an ‘e to ie’ root-chang-

As you can see, we are looking at a straightforward ‘e to i’ root-changing -ir verb, with a variant first person singular.

To be perfectly frank, if you managed to read and understand that last statement without batting an eyelid, take it from me, you’re getting somewhere!

IGHT years after it created the compact crossover segment, the one millionth Juke has rolled off the line at Nissan’s Sunderland Plant. On average, a brand new Juke is built at the plant every 105 seconds.

Well-known for its distinctive sporty styling, the 2018 Juke comes with a host of interior and exterior personalisation choices. Thanks to all the options and possible personalisation combinations, more than 23,000 different versions of the latest Juke are available for customers.

Registrations up ... emissions down FIGURES just released for June 2018 showed a marked increase of 5.2 per cent across the EU, totalling 1.6 million new cars. In terms of volume, the result is the highest June total on record.

In Spain, the demand for cars increased by 8 per cent, just behind France with 9.2 per cent.

Over the first half of 2018, the European passenger car market grew by 2.9 per cent to reach 8,449,247 units. The strong performance of the new EU member states is worth highlighting, as registrations increased by 11.4 per cent so far this year. The figures for Spain were also more than encouraging with an increase in demand of 10.1 per cent during the first six months of this year.

Other statistics from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA) showed that car makers have significantly reduced the environmental impact of manufacturing over the last decade.

This is despite the number of cars produced increasing from 11.9 million in 2013 to 17 million four years later.

The new data, recently published in ACEA’s Automobile Industry Pocket Guide, show that total CO2 emissions due to car production fell by almost 24 per cent since 2008.

Finally, as cars have become equipped with ever more features to make them cleaner, safer and smarter, vehicle production has become more complex. Despite this, the energy consumption per car produced decreased by almost 16 per cent over the last 10 years.

sport Disappointing day for Lo Crispin Golf Society THE Lo Crispin Golf Society played an Individual Stableford Competition at Bonalba, with 29 members and guests participating.

They last visited this course more than 12 months ago but this time the general consensus appeared to be that they should not seek to play it again soon.

The main reasons for this centred on the fact that there were inconsistent and woolly greens, and poorly maintained tee boxes.

Furthermore, around many of the greens (although not all) were rings of sand, which caused problems for those unfortunate enough to land in them and nobody from the course had alerted the society to the potential problems The hot weather also undoubtedly contributed to the low scoring on the day. They did complete the rounds and, as customary, returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern, where the prizes were awarded and tapas supplied to all who took part.

The prize winners were as follows:

Gold Division 1st Place - Rod Pullen 30 pts off 6 2nd Place - Brian Smith 27 pts off 17 (on count back) 3rd Place - Harry Wilcock 27 pts off 15 Silver Division 1st Place - Paul Carter 28 pts off 27 2nd Place - Janet Candlin 25 pts off 33 3rd Place - Paul Flanaghan 20 pts off 23 NTPs on Par 3s Hole 4 - Alan Truscott (Guest) Hole 8 - Bill Croft Hole 11 - Bob (Guest) Hole 14 - Rod Pullen The Free Game Draw was won by Dave Norton. Nobody was able to claim the two’s pot. The best guest was Bob (23 pts off 9).

The next main game is the Summer Cup at Campoamor on Wednesday.

Lucky day for some LAST Friday the Montgo Golf Society in the north of Costa Blanca played their annual Mojo Cup Stableford competition.

Sponsored by John Costigan, one of the members, many prizes were up for grabs including chocolate and baked treats.

The Cottrell family proved to be immune to the curse of ‘Friday 13th,’ as they took both top spots.

The defending cup holder, Sally Cottrell, didn’t quite attain the high score of her 42 point win last year but did manage 40 points.

Keith Cottrell came in a close second with 38 points. Pushing the captain, Denise Cooper, into third spot.

The four NTP prizes this week went to Jim Hayward for the gents on the 16th, whilst the ladies prize went to Ros Fletcher. NTP in two on the fifth went to Sally Cottrell, while second on the 18th went to Shaun O’Gorman.

NO CURSE: Lucky Friday 13th for lady golfers.

There were no two’s recorded this week so the stock of coveted Montgo balls remains strong.

Several additional battles took place this week for the ongoing pairs and singles championships as follows: Richard Fox and Denise Cooper beat Susie and John Snelling 6/5; Sally and Arthur Burrowes go through as John Feek and George Braddick conceded after nine holes; and finally Sally Cottrell beat Richard Fox 4/3.
